… What’s wrong with white teachers? How do we close the black-white teaching-performance gap? Extolling the need for more black teachers is not the same as demanding that white teachers be less racist. Naming what’s wrong with white people’s teaching skills must begin with calling out racism. We certainly need more black teachers, but recruitment isn’t a solution to the racism that students and teachers of color face every day.
Like I’ve been saying, the Conventional Wisdom is constantly dumbing down toward There Are Good Guys and There Are Bad Guys.
In the past, it was common to say that blacks should enjoy affirmative action benefits in hiring teachers because they can serve as co-ethnic role models for black students. But lately it seems more and more common to argue for affirmative action for black teachers by just plain attacking white teachers as evil.
He says black teachers get better “outcomes” than white teachers for blacks but also sometimes,for white students.
The former sounds dubious,and the latter well nigh impossible.
Of course that is not what most black teachers are like. But obviously a white teacher will never get away with anything close to this. In today's society, would even the most authoritative white male teacher feel capable of ORDERING a black kid to sit in his seat?
As for the second claim, it is not only possible but true, but that is because the claim is very limited. "Sometimes" is a weak word: has a white student anywhere ever been helped by having some black teacher instead of some white teacher? Yes, of course.

Simply have all students taught by a simple cheap personal computer. I spent many years lecturing on my feet in front of various college classes. But I was in software development for my 'day job'. I eventually began to write teaching software. Lots of people worry about automation. For example self driving cars frighten labor economists. A large part of the human population derives it's income from driving of one kind or another.
But the automation of classroom teaching has many positive features. For example it largely eliminates all this talk about the race of the teacher. Secondly it allows the 'best' practices to be be instituted everywhere. Most classroom teachers for example simply can't construct a good multiple choice test. We let these teachers construct very poor tests of doubtful validity on their own. That would be like assembling a car and expecting each worker at every station on the line to develop their own techniques and practices. This guy likes to use screws, while another guy likes rivets and each are just 'winging it'.
The big software publishers like Cisco and Microsoft all have certification programs and their tests are always multiple choice and machine administered. These tests are designed by professionals who understand test construction not by someone with just a teaching certificate.

You need the second part in order to avoid the whole thing becoming an argument for going back to segregation.
Civil rights 1.0, had a pretty clear integration message--separate is not equal. You could make the argument just in terms stuff--money, facilities, etc. Then there was a 1.1 argument that included the magic of sitting next to whitey. A bit weird, considering most people in the world naturally aren't around people of other races and do just fine.
But the all this stuff of the last generation "structural racism", "stereotype threat", "disparate discipline", "black learning styles", more "structural racism" ... strongly points to the solution of segregation. You teach your people your way, i'll teach mine my way--win, win. The whole Michael Brown/Ferguson thing was basically an argument that young black men just really shouldn't have to deal with white cops. Fine, well and good--then lets have separate communities.
The gist of the modern black scam is to continually blame whitey for black dysfunction while simultaneously demanding that whitey be ever present and denouncing any "let's go our separate ways" response or trend as "resegregation!" It's essentially "cry 'racism!' forever".
The comments on that article reinforce what I’ve always known to be the case: a “conversation about race” really means “shut up whitey and let me lecture you.”
For all the assertions and histrionics, definitive proof of The Root author’s concept is nowhere to be found in real life. Will the current barking be reminiscent of all the Marxists saying that we just haven’t tried the real deal and that is why prior Commie regimes failed? Call out the kennelmasters and make them eat their own dog food. Isn’t that an anti-Alinskyite tactic to reset the Noticing?

I am now convinced (mainly after reading and thinking about recent posts here) that Zuckerberg is running for President and that he is going to be greatly underestimated at first, both by potential allies and by foes.
I suspect some people here are liable to underestimate him, because many people here are very keen on thinking about the value of group generalizations. I got the feeling the author was black before I opened the article. There is a great deal of artlessness in alienating the nice white lady allies in school teachers, some of the most solid Democrats around. (1) Bad, racist, White teachers should only be allowed to teach White students where their racism will cause less harm. White students should be taught only by these bad, racist, White teachers to reduce the White privilege of White students.
(2) Marvelously effective and non-racist Negro teachers should only be allowed to teach Negro students who will benefit enormously from the skill and dedication of Negro pedagogy. Negro students should be taught only by Negro teachers to shield these students from bad, racist, White teachers and provide these students with the full benefits of Negro pedagogy.
Frankly, the minute one of those middle-class blacks tries to teach hardcore ghetto kids, he/she is going to go crazy.

These kinds of whites-in-skin-color-only are no challenge for the offspring of the wealthy. *Charter schools in these parts don’t have bus service, basically guaranteeing they stay heavily white, even though they are supposed to be for everybody.
Dr. Perry’s job is to know nothing about public education. He’s very good at his job. It’s admirable, in a way, that a man could be so good at his job.
In recent years, an outburst of national studies (pdf) and exposés have shown that black teachers produce better academic and behavioral outcomes for black students compared with their white counterparts.

So, the quote are accurate. But was this research reported in the national studies PDF noted above? The link for the PDF summary of national studies: USDOE: Recruiting and Retaining Educators of Color May 7, 2015. On page 19 we find:

I cannot locate a free copy of this article, but I am able to locate an abstract. Representation in the classroom: The effect of own-race teachers on student achievement (April 2015)
This article may or may not contradict the previously mentioned article, which is a working paper which came out about a year after the paper for which we have an abstract. Because there is no mention in the abstract about test scores, we cannot be sure about this.
Nonetheless, researchers who were cited to support the “black teachers for black students” hypothesis had research which showed that the gains were not in test scores, but in attitudes. Which doesn’t exactly support the hypothesis of the article.
I worked at a 3% white school where a local paper asked the black principal her opinion about “black teachers for black students.” The principal’s reply was that students responded to the content of the vessel, not the color of the vessel.
I agree, let’s give black kids black teachers, and let white kids be stuck with white teachers. In fact, why make other blacks suffer with horribly racist white people all day long in their lives, as well. We can clear out the remnants of whites from predominantly black cities, move them out to other white cities (YUCK!!!) and fill up the empty spots with blacks from elsewhere.
And why let those pesky parasitic whites in white cities live off the enormous powerhouse of productivity and wealth that would arise from all that wonderful diversity in those black cities (DIVERSITY IS OUR STRENGTH!!!)? We should require each city to get back from the state and federal government the same that it chips in. That’ll teach those pasty devils.

There are not enough black teachers because they fail the teacher’s exam, that is a fact, not an opinion. Now my opinion, let black teachers, even those without their certs, teach black students only. Let them keep trying to pass the certification test as they teach on a probationary status. Then in a few years, let say 10, we can publish the results and by that time all of my grandkids will be college age, Selfish, you betcha.

At what point do these people realize that they’re arguing for segregation?
If “urban” groups truly believe such studies, may I suggest a new approach to public education. Students will attend be relegated to educational institutions based on race as opposed to location. Public spending will be apportioned based on number of students so that there will be parity between schools. We can call this policy “separate but equal”.
Even if black students do learn better with black teachers, an explanation no less parsimonious than “white teachers are racists” is “black students are racists.” Black students routinely misbehave and ignore or reject the lessons in white teachers’ classrooms. They belittle and decry white teachers and demand black replacements.
The female teachers subconsciously are associated with mama, grama, and auntie, the male teachers with mama's boyfriends and mall security guards.
According to friends who have suffered through the torture, all it takes is the first week in a black classroom to loathe and despise blacks forever and ever.

I think the majority of teachers are well-meaning but don’t see their own bias. There is a component here where some training could help a lot..
Black teachers probably know how to prepare kids for interacting with our white supremacist culture.

My sister was a teacher in Philadelphia , taught third graders, the biggest issue was the parents. She quit after 2 years. My uncle , a typical Democrat and an Obama supporter, tried to give back to the community by becoming a teacher in Philadelphia at the age of 55…he quit after 1 year.

This guy has a PhD in “education policy”, characterizes himself on his website as a “public intellectual”, and wishes to be addressed as Dr. And yet here he is, castigating others from his assumed perch of superiority and expertise, while using a common enough word, the meaning of which he clearly doesn’t know, in print no less.
Isn’t the logical conclusion of all this black bellyaching about the achievement/discipline gap the official re-segregation of public schools? If white(and presumably Mexican and Asian) teachers and administrators are so irredeemably racist, then surely black students deserve nothing less than to be insulated completely from the scourge of racist authority figures during their formative years. Of course, this probably won’t be enough, as they could still encounter racism among white students. It’s only fair that black students not be required to put up with such daily struggles. Keep the white students away from them too. In fact, why not have separate black school boards, with all-black student bodies, teaching staff and bureaucracies? It can’t fail!

That study is not peer reviewed, but is now a discussion paper. It seems fishy that it finds a big effect for having 1 black teacher in grades 3 to 5 but no significant further improvement from having 2 or 3. If blacks are better teachers of blacks, that is not the outcome you would see.

I can easily imagine a black male teacher telling an out-of-line black “youth” something like “N**** sit the f*** down!” And I can imagine that this command achieves the desired result and that the teacher’s supervisors never hear about this language nor complain about it.
Of course that is not what most black teachers are like. But obviously a white teacher will never get away with anything close to this. In today’s society, would even the most authoritative white male teacher feel capable of ORDERING a black kid to sit in his seat?

Some teachers are certainly better than others, but diminishing returns kick in and if it takes a Harvard grad with a Harvard SAT score, how scalable is it? Also that ability is usually best reserved for students of great natural ability.

If he were able to do a Trump-style takeover of the Democratic party and make it into a sort of technophile Buddhist party, I would consider that a very good thing. a lot of people do not want to have segregation but promote it anyway. The reason is that they know it will never happen. So there is no risk, but you can still career out of shocking white people about how racist you think they are. Many white people love to hear it and are willing to pay money for that by creating “diversity manager” jobs, whole academic branches (“postcolonial studies” etc.).

Zuckerberg could be a strong contender, with the proviso that he possesses some basic charisma. Zucko would in the general election face the towering Marco Rubio or suchlike. Seems like a tough battle. If Trump declines to run for a second term, this could happen in 2020.

In London, there are many state schools which have pupils from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds .
These are in areas where immigrants have settled, either in state subsidised housing or in cramped private accommodation.

The best elementary school teacher my kids had in all their years was an older talented tenth type black (not really – more like paper bag colored) woman who had (up until that point – she was later) somehow escaped being promoted into school administration. If she had been 20 years younger she would have been a corporate executive or naval officer, etc. but instead she was the CEO of her 4th grade classroom and she ran a tight ship. She taught old fashioned solid basics like spelling and grammar that last for a lifetime. Later on we figured out that the school administration let her hand pick her class so she could teach at the level she wanted. Many of the other (younger white ) teachers that my kids had were idiots – you can’t teach spelling and grammar if you don’t know it yourself.
At one time, school teaching was considered the pinnacle career option for black women. Most of the female “mathematicians” in Hidden Figures had been school teachers. But those days are over – today any black with talent has much better options.

The race of the teacher doesn’t seem to be a very important factor in education when all the other factors are held equal. In any case it is easy to control for.
Simply have all students taught by a simple cheap personal computer. I spent many years lecturing on my feet in front of various college classes. But I was in software development for my ‘day job’. I eventually began to write teaching software. Lots of people worry about automation. For example self driving cars frighten labor economists. A large part of the human population derives it’s income from driving of one kind or another.
But the automation of classroom teaching has many positive features. For example it largely eliminates all this talk about the race of the teacher. Secondly it allows the ‘best’ practices to be be instituted everywhere. Most classroom teachers for example simply can’t construct a good multiple choice test. We let these teachers construct very poor tests of doubtful validity on their own. That would be like assembling a car and expecting each worker at every station on the line to develop their own techniques and practices. This guy likes to use screws, while another guy likes rivets and each are just ‘winging it’.
The big software publishers like Cisco and Microsoft all have certification programs and their tests are always multiple choice and machine administered. These tests are designed by professionals who understand test construction not by someone with just a teaching certificate.
But we have confounded the need to teach with the needs of the teacher class.
A few years ago, Zuckerberg wasted $100 million of his money (not that he would feel it) on "reforming" the schools of Newark. The reform consisted largely of paying the incompetent but unionized black teachers of Newark to sit in a "jobs bank" while paying for another set of more competent (and whiter) teachers. This was spearheaded not just by Zuckerberg but by "school reform leadership". The results were very modest because it turns out that the real problem in Newark is not bad teachers but bad students.

Simply have all students taught by a simple cheap personal computer. I spent many years lecturing on my feet in front of various college classes. But I was in software development for my 'day job'. I eventually began to write teaching software. Lots of people worry about automation. For example self driving cars frighten labor economists. A large part of the human population derives it's income from driving of one kind or another.
But the automation of classroom teaching has many positive features. For example it largely eliminates all this talk about the race of the teacher. Secondly it allows the 'best' practices to be be instituted everywhere. Most classroom teachers for example simply can't construct a good multiple choice test. We let these teachers construct very poor tests of doubtful validity on their own. That would be like assembling a car and expecting each worker at every station on the line to develop their own techniques and practices. This guy likes to use screws, while another guy likes rivets and each are just 'winging it'.
The big software publishers like Cisco and Microsoft all have certification programs and their tests are always multiple choice and machine administered. These tests are designed by professionals who understand test construction not by someone with just a teaching certificate.

Civil rights 1.0, had a pretty clear integration message–separate is not equal. You could make the argument just in terms stuff–money, facilities, etc. Then there was a 1.1 argument that included the magic of sitting next to whitey. A bit weird, considering most people in the world naturally aren’t around people of other races and do just fine.
But the all this stuff of the last generation “structural racism”, “stereotype threat”, “disparate discipline”, “black learning styles”, more “structural racism” … strongly points to the solution of segregation. Even critics can grant that he is far more intelligent than the typical person, and far more hard-working. If he seems to be making a somewhat genuine effort to get out there and “understand” the problems of the average American (and in particular of the formerly Democratic Trump-voters, as the news article in the earlier “dinner visit” post stated), then this can make an impact. I’m not at all a Zuckerberg fan, and I don’t have a Facebook account, but I believe him if he says he is actually trying to understand people. What else is he going to do? (This is a guy who would probably be satisfied with several millon.)

A pretty young lady who is a weekend bartender at a restaurant we frequent is also a math teacher in a vibrant elementary school a few towns away.
