A New York Times announcement:

Uppercasing ‘Black’

The Times will start using uppercase “Black” to describe people and cultures of African origin, both in the U.S. and elsewhere. Read more in this note from Dean Baquet and Phil Corbett.

Dear Colleagues,

At The Times and elsewhere, the nationwide protests over racism and police violence have prompted discussions about many aspects of our coverage. One element has been a renewed focus on a longstanding debate: whether to capitalize the term “Black.”

We have talked to more than 100 staff members to get their views …

Based on those discussions, we’ve decided to adopt the change and start using uppercase “Black” to describe people and cultures of African origin, both in the United States and elsewhere. We believe this style best conveys elements of shared history and identity, and reflects our goal to be respectful of all the people and communities we cover.

… We recently decided to capitalize “Native” and “Indigenous,” while other ethnic terms like “Asian-American” and “Latino” have always been capitalized.

We will retain lowercase treatment for “white.” While there is an obvious question of parallelism, there has been no comparable movement toward widespread adoption of a new style for “white,” and there is less of a sense that “white” describes a shared culture and history.

Nothing

After all, what kind of shared culture and history can white people take pride in? None. They have nothing in common and, especially, nothing to be proud of. Nothing.

Moreover, hate groups and white supremacists have long favored the uppercase style, which in itself is reason to avoid it.

You can tell that they are white supremacist hate groups because they want to treat blacks and whites equally: either capitalize both or capitalize neither.

Advocating racial equality is a dead giveaway of the white supremacist hater.

But, c’mon, let’s be frank, the New York Times is uppercasing “Black” and lowercasing “white” for the same reason that Christian journals usually uppercase pronouns referring to Jesus but not to the devil.

Not white culture

  3. You can’t have a genocide without dehumanizing the other side first. With the mainstream media LARPing as Radio Rwanda it’s only natural the Times would do this.

    Or maybe genocide isn’t their real intent. Maybe they want to turn this into a one party state and then benevolently govern the people they focus their hate on, with love and understanding. Maybe they will be holding all the cards and then tell their voters, we weren’t really serious about stripping the white devils in the middle class of their wealth and destroying them. Maybe they will be just like the Republicans who after getting elected, really don’t try to do anything other than suck up to global finance.

    Ot maybe they hate you, they mean it, and they don’t care what the consequences will be.

    There are some commenters at The Unz Review and alt-right outlets that deliberately have been capitalizing “White” while not capitalizing “black” long before The New York Times adopted this practice. It’s basically just a passive-aggressive form of ethnocentrism.

    Incidentally, while capitalizing “Black” has been adopted by major media outlets, capitalizing “brown” hasn’t. You see “black and brown” used a lot in mainstream media articles about diversity, racism, etc., but now it’s being used with just the “Black” capitalized while the “brown” stays uncapitalized. For example, here’s a recent LA Times article lamenting the lack of diversity:

    https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2020-06-24/los-angeles-times-black-lives-matter-diversity

    On Wednesday, Executive Editor Norman Pearlstine heard from aggrieved newsroom staff members during a more than four-hour meeting examining the mistreatment of Black and brown editorial staff members past and present.

    “Black”, “White”, “Jew” and similar words should be capitalised. I understand why the fizzy-haired Mulatto girls don’t want to write “White” but I don’t understand why the rest of you don’t use it. Is uppercase sufficiently woke, though? How about using all caps? That way you can pair BLACK with white…..That will really show those white supremacist bastards who’s in charge!

    Moreover, hate groups and white supremacists have long favored the uppercase style, which in itself is reason to avoid it.

    Of course, lots of those groups favor the uppercase style for both “Black” and “White,” which would seem to indicate that the NYTIMES should use lowercase for both…But who cares about logic….

    We recently decided to capitalize “Native” and “Indigenous,” while other ethnic terms like “Asian-American” and “Latino” have always been capitalized.

    So does that mean that European is still capitalized?That seems un-woke….

    I’m not a fan of “genocide”–the term. My cursory look at the subject showed it to be captive of special interests, U. N. bureaucrats, and the like, and the “stages of genocide” so broad and just sloppy as to permit the banning of legitimate political criticism and abrogation of civil liberties by a totalitarian power wrapping itself in anti-genocide credibility.

    Still, I think the subject is worth a look.

    A small number of English colonists buying slaves from African slave-traders and bringing them to the “Deep South” of North American in 1619 was not only a “costly mistake” but also, combined with open borders and the invasion of tens of millions of legal and illegal aliens that will soon transform the U.S. into a nonwhite-majority dystopia in which European-Americans will be an increasingly dispossessed and persecuted minority (with the exception of the rich and affluent, gentile and Jewish but for who knows how long?), a nation-destroying catastrophe.

    But is didn’t have to be so for obvious reasons. The North could have let the South secede from the union in 1860 or before and create a separate country in which slavery would have almost surely been abolished in 1890-95 as it was in Cuba and Brazil. Instead Lincoln, the “great emancipator” who’s apotheosized as our “greatest president,” started a war in which over 700,ooo white men were butchered and the South decimated and mortified to free the slaves and then reneged on his promise to send them to Africa and the Caribbean. The “rest is history,” alas, as blacks were allowed to migrate to the North and West to blight and destroy our “great cities,” depending on whether they’re the majority or a large minority -and, given massive nonwhite immigration, overwhelmingly from Mexico and Central America, blacks and “browns” will destroy what’s left of what Vdare calls the “historic American Nation.”

    Some how they think that members of their Tribe who “look” white will get a pass or something in the midst of carnage (or they think they can hide themselves because of their money behind enough gates (and Tribe “privilege”/and toss the poorer Tribe members over board…) while shouting for “diversity” in your neighborhood so you can get beaten to death…) —

    In fact as opposed to fantasy, sub-Saharan Africans and “African-Americans have benefited immensely from slavery and colonialism. Most blacks in the U.S. would not exist if not for slavery. They owe their lives to slavery. If not for slavery, millions of blacks in the United States -lawyers, judges, politicians, bureaucrats, business men and women, journalists, sundry entertainers, etc. -would not enjoy affluent and upper-middle-class “lifestyles.” Myriads of blacks, most of them with low-IQs, and many with histories of violence and criminality, would not be earning or would not have earned millions or tens of millions of dollar a year playing football and basketball. Even blacks in jails and prisons, including murderers, have better lives in some ways than their brother and sisters in Haiti and sub-Saharan Africa.

    And as Jared Taylor noted in a Youtube.com video that has just been censored and “disappeared,” no pre-colonial African culture or country had a calendar of written language, has invented the wheel, had domesticated animals, had built a two-story building, etc. If not for colonialism and contact with Europeans and Western Civilization, there would be no cars, buses, trucks, trains, planes, paved roads, airports, hospitals, schools and universities, cures for diseases, multi-story buildings, and much else in sub-Saharan Africa.

    What this suggests is that TPTB are getting *very* nervous about how much its coalition hates each other. Emphasizing that a black is a black is a black gets past some inconvenient fractures – most famously, that African Americans and all other Black’s are simmering with rage at each other. But it’s showing that hate YT isn’t enough to stop the feudin’.

    It’s basically a race between HBD science and demographic replacement. On the other hand, wokeness is a religion, and science doesn’t matter to religious people.

    The “legacy of slavery” is a tragedy and scourge -for whites who live in cities with violent, dangerous, and predatory black criminals who’ve assaulted, raped, gang-raped, mugged, robbed, tortured, murdered, brutalized, and terrorized millions and millions of whites over the last 60-years and before that to a lesser extent due to segregation and just and swift and draconian punishment. And who must endure, moreover, the slander and lies of white-hating demagogues, politicians, “talking heads,” commentators, and pseudo-intellectuals, the likes of Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Barack Obama, Eric Holder, T. Coates, Eric Michael Dyson, Joy Reid, Dom Lemon, ad nauseam.

    America’s Achilles’ heel was slavery. Treating humans, even humans of a race as devoid of civilizational accomplishments as black Africans, like livestock is wrong and debases the practitioners. Even more disastrous, however, than what the early slavers did to themselves or to the blacks they enslaved was what they did to future generations of whites, for they allowed blacks a foothold in the New World. Early Americans such as Franklin and Webster realized what a boon the discovery of America was for the white race, but by the time those visionaries had dreamed their dreams, the tawny races already were here. The idea of an America, or at least a North America, as the more or less exclusive inheritance of white-Western man has been chipped away at ever since. Had blacks never come, had slavery never been established in areas that became the United States, then the racial drama would have been confined to a much milder American Indian-white. The United States, with its control over such a large swathe of temperate North America, would have become the leading Western nation, as it became even with the baggage of slavery and a large black population; but it would have done so with the idea of it being the exclusive inheritance of the white man. Instead, for a mess of pottage (a few decades of cheap labor), white America sold its birthright—it authored for itself the fate of living in a racially fissured society. Such a society could hold together only as long as the whites remained united; one or two generations of disunity and the nation would become just another racially incoherent New World hodgepodge, a Brazil. That is what we have before us now. What the protestors and rioters demand, and what they are getting, is the end, not of America, but of White America. The promise of an America that conserves more than a veneer of European civilization, as in the mestizo and mulatto former Spanish colonies that speak Spanish but racially are highly distinct from the whites who introduced the language, is disappearing in the most consequential of not only the New World nations but all Western nations–the United States of America.

    Since when has “uppercase” been a verb?

    It’s a programming term. To compare two strings, especially names, it helps to first uppercase both.

    “Tom” =? “Tom” => true
    “TOM” =? “Tom” => false
    “TOM” =? “tom” => false

    uppercase(“TOM”) =? uppercase(“Tom”) => true
    uppercase(“TOM”) =? uppercase(“tom”) => true

  90. Let’s write it as:

    bLack

    That way one of the letters is capitalized while none are in “white”.

  91. Moreover, hate groups and white supremacists have long favored the uppercase style, which in itself is reason to avoid it.

    This is a clever bit of rhetoric, designed to disarm any thoughts of fairness that might challenge the New York Times’s blatant double standard. Associating an argument with various bad guys makes the self-conscious liberal readers recoil at using the argument (or even thinking about it rationally).

    This is the concept of fnords, which Scott Alexander described well on his blog (and can be found here). It’s a powerful weapon and I think such a powerful weapon is needed here, because the case the Times is making is so asinine.

    Instead Lincoln, the “great emancipator” who’s apotheosized as our “greatest president,” started a war in which over 700,ooo white men were butchered and the South decimated and mortified to free the slaves and then reneged on his promise to send them to Africa and the Caribbean.

    What does the fragment “and mortified to free the slaves” mean?

    Where did Lincoln say he would send the blacks to Africa and the Caribbean?

    Your question is ahistorical, irrational, and thus, nonsensical.

    You are assuming that, if people like Nana, Hannah Arendt, and John Wayne were alive today, they would be faced with the same alternatives. Today’s alternatives exist due to the deaths of such people, and their replacement by tens of millions of anti-Americans.

  98. @Change that Matters

    You have no idea how stupid your comment is. Nana was a fanatical, American patriot. I was much too tolerant in my initial response.

  99. Isn’t it convenient that “Blacks” universally refer to the “white” race and “white people” as a monolithic block of ethnic, cultural, political, social, and otherwise indistinguishably homogenized tribal and genetic human endeavor, but that doesn’t rate the same sort of logical examination 100 random staffers divined out of their own bigoted “feelings” and knee-jerked their way into openly denying their own admission that it is faulty parallelism, pretending on the one hand “white” people are the cause of all “Black” failure, and on the other hand, “white” people really aren’t a “people,” as an excuse to elevate the allegedly “monolithic African” tribes into a single capitalized boat full of clones, while lower-casing their way through ignoring and denying thousands of years of Western history.

    True, there is no “white race,” and “white people” aren’t all brothers and sisters in cahoots against “Black” people. Western Civilization however, was indeed founded and enhanced, and continuously progressed from cultures and genetic pools originated by fair-skinned peoples. What the NYT really means, is it is not willing to concede the latter, because it’s tantamount to admitting that yes indeed, the very machines and technologies they are publishing their tripe with are the product of “white” culture, and that no, the role of “Black” people in the whole of Western Civilization has been quite tangental for many centuries, and then only as admission via conquest and servitude in various forms.

    And for that matter, “black” is a color, not a race. There are dozens at least, of “black” skinned human beings from India to Australia who have nothing to do with Africa. And comically, the term “Negro” has fallen into scorn, when in fact it’s merely Latin for “black,” and was the original scientific classification for an African genetic variation of human, of which, skin color was but one noted unique characteristic.

    But then again, it’s all pretty academic, since nobody reads newspapers any more anyway.

  100. @Currier House

    Well, spread the word. ‘Cause if the civil war kicks off, in all of the excitement, you and your people will be lumped in with the People of Pallour, and at that point no amount of handwaving will suffice to not be perceived as the enemy, just like all of us White gentiles.

    I think what individual people do is far less important than what the politicians do.

    America’s politicians, alas, seem to have decided that America should become an updated version of the old Soviet Union.

    As I understand it, the way non-believers dealt with the Soviet system was by “staying low,” as you put it, having their children, and waiting for the system to disintegrate under its own weight. Not the most bold, appealing, or expedient way of dealing with a corrupt political system, but it did work.
