Dear Colleagues,
At The Times and elsewhere, the nationwide protests over racism and police violence have prompted discussions about many aspects of our coverage. One element has been a renewed focus on a longstanding debate: whether to capitalize the term “Black.”
We have talked to more than 100 staff members to get their views …
Based on those discussions, we’ve decided to adopt the change and start using uppercase “Black” to describe people and cultures of African origin, both in the United States and elsewhere. We believe this style best conveys elements of shared history and identity, and reflects our goal to be respectful of all the people and communities we cover.
… We recently decided to capitalize “Native” and “Indigenous,” while other ethnic terms like “Asian-American” and “Latino” have always been capitalized.
We will retain lowercase treatment for “white.” While there is an obvious question of parallelism, there has been no comparable movement toward widespread adoption of a new style for “white,” and there is less of a sense that “white” describes a shared culture and history.
Nothing
After all, what kind of shared culture and history can white people take pride in? None. They have nothing in common and, especially, nothing to be proud of. Nothing.
Moreover, hate groups and white supremacists have long favored the uppercase style, which in itself is reason to avoid it.
You can tell that they are white supremacist hate groups because they want to treat blacks and whites equally: either capitalize both or capitalize neither.
Advocating racial equality is a dead giveaway of the white supremacist hater.
But, c’mon, let’s be frank, the New York Times is uppercasing “Black” and lowercasing “white” for the same reason that Christian journals usually uppercase pronouns referring to Jesus but not to the devil.
Not white culture
That is, everybody whose job security and career fate within the NYT rests in our hands and no one from outside the world that we rule.

There are some commenters at The Unz Review and alt-right outlets that deliberately have been capitalizing “White” while not capitalizing “black” long before The New York Times adopted this practice. It’s basically just a passive-aggressive form of ethnocentrism.
Incidentally, while capitalizing “Black” has been adopted by major media outlets, capitalizing “brown” hasn’t. You see “black and brown” used a lot in mainstream media articles about diversity, racism, etc., but now it’s being used with just the “Black” capitalized while the “brown” stays uncapitalized. “Black”, “White”, “Jew” and similar words should be capitalised. I understand why the fizzy-haired Mulatto girls don’t want to write “White” but I don’t understand why the rest of you don’t use it. I suggested in a few comments a while back that readers may want to research the literature on genocide to understand what’s happening to White folks in America. I was stretching a bit, but I don’t recall getting any criticism. Wikipedia is a start.
I’m not a fan of “genocide”–the term. My cursory look at the subject showed it to be captive of special interests, U. N. bureaucrats, and the like, and the “stages of genocide” so broad and just sloppy as to permit the banning of legitimate political criticism and abrogation of civil liberties by a totalitarian power wrapping itself in anti-genocide credibility.

I think Unz can do them one better. For example capitalize both the b and l, BLack. Or Unz can respect both traditional Grammer rules and BLM with bold, black. In the future a BLM specific font, font size or emojie of an African royal could be used. Underline and italics are also universally available.

In fact as opposed to fantasy, sub-Saharan Africans and “African-Americans have benefited immensely from slavery and colonialism. Most blacks in the U.S. would not exist if not for slavery. They owe their lives to slavery. So “whites” are undeserving of capitalization because they have no common culture or attributes.
Yet the new york times is always prattling on about capitalized “Whiteness,” which is supposedly the defining common attribute of “whites.” And which is of course used exclusively as a pejorative for that reason.

But how are the different spellings to be pronounced so that the distinction is as clear in speech as it is in print?
How far shall we extend this? Will people from the subcontinent be Brown while Polynesians are brown?

I suppose Europeans could be White while the swarthier pale races could be white. Or more likely vice versa? Shall we classify Palestinians and Israelis together? Won’t that lead to trouble?

What this suggests is that TPTB are getting *very* nervous about how much its coalition hates each other. Had blacks never come, had slavery never been established in areas that became the United States, then the racial drama would have been confined to a much milder American Indian-white. The United States, with its control over such a large swathe of temperate North America, would have become the leading Western nation, as it became even with the baggage of slavery and a large black population; but it would have done so with the idea of it being the exclusive inheritance of the white man. Instead, for a mess of pottage (a few decades of cheap labor), white America sold its birthright—it authored for itself the fate of living in a racially fissured society. Such a society could hold together only as long as the whites remained united; one or two generations of disunity and the nation would become just another racially incoherent New World hodgepodge, a Brazil. That is what we have before us now. What the protestors and rioters demand, and what they are getting, is the end, not of America, but of White America. That way one of the letters is capitalized while none are in “white”.
This is a clever bit of rhetoric, designed to disarm any thoughts of fairness that might challenge the New York Times’s blatant double standard. Associating an argument with various bad guys makes the self-conscious liberal readers recoil at using the argument (or even thinking about it rationally).
This is the concept of fnords, which Scott Alexander described well on his blog (and can be found here). It’s a powerful weapon and I think such a powerful weapon is needed here, because the case the Times is making is so asinine.
No. She didn’t support communists then (1893-1976), and though she never expressed hostility towards blacks, she also never spoke of black leaders, including King (positively or negatively), and she never made excuses for gangsters of any race.

You are assuming that, if people like Nana, Hannah Arendt, and John Wayne were alive today, they would be faced with the same alternatives. Today’s alternatives exist due to the deaths of such people, and their replacement by tens of millions of anti-Americans.

Isn’t it convenient that “Blacks” universally refer to the “white” race and “white people” as a monolithic block of ethnic, cultural, political, social, and otherwise indistinguishably homogenized tribal and genetic human endeavor, but that doesn’t rate the same sort of logical examination 100 random staffers divined out of their own bigoted “feelings” and knee-jerked their way into openly denying their own admission that it is faulty parallelism, pretending on the one hand “white” people are the cause of all “Black” failure, and on the other hand, “white” people really aren’t a “people,” as an excuse to elevate the allegedly “monolithic African” tribes into a single capitalized boat full of clones, while lower-casing their way through ignoring and denying thousands of years of Western history.
True, there is no “white race,” and “white people” aren’t all brothers and sisters in cahoots against “Black” people. Western Civilization however, was indeed founded and enhanced, and continuously progressed from cultures and genetic pools originated by fair-skinned peoples. What the NYT really means, is it is not willing to concede the latter, because it’s tantamount to admitting that yes indeed, the very machines and technologies they are publishing their tripe with are the product of “white” culture, and that no, the role of “Black” people in the whole of Western Civilization has been quite tangental for many centuries, and then only as admission via conquest and servitude in various forms.
And for that matter, “black” is a color, not a race. There are dozens at least, of “black” skinned human beings from India to Australia who have nothing to do with Africa. And comically, the term “Negro” has fallen into scorn, when in fact it’s merely Latin for “black,” and was the original scientific classification for an African genetic variation of human, of which, skin color was but one noted unique characteristic.
But then again, it’s all pretty academic, since nobody reads newspapers any more anyway.
Well, spread the word. ‘Cause if the civil war kicks off, in all of the excitement, you and your people will be lumped in with the People of Pallour, and at that point no amount of handwaving will suffice to not be perceived as the enemy, just like all of us White gentiles.
