For years I’ve been pointing out that two bulwarks of Democratic Party campaign fundraising and prestige, Silicon Valley and Hollywood, don’t have to play by the Diversity rules that most of the rest of American business is supposed to play by.
Every few years since the 1990s, Jesse Jackson would try to shake down the Tech Industry and he’d be laughed out of town. Silicon Valley and Hollywood were too liberal, too rich, too powerful, too successful in the global marketplace (America can only wish we had as big a share of jetliners, much less cars, as Silicon Valley and Hollywood have of their respective markets) to let Jesse Jackson throw a wrench in the works.
But 2014 was the year in which liberal ideology overwhelmed liberal hypocrisy. From New York Times columnist Joe Nocera:

Kantor was working on an article, published in The Times on Tuesday, about the Stanford class of 1994 — the class that graduated a year before Netscape went public, and, for all intents and purposes, started the Internet economy. She was exploring why the men in that class had done so much better in Silicon Valley than the women.
Sacks, meanwhile, was one of the most successful members of the class. At Stanford he wrote for The Stanford Review, “a conservative-libertarian campus newspaper,” where he befriended Peter Thiel, a fellow libertarian.
And were wildly unpopular dissidents on campus for opposing the regime of diversity worship that Jesse Jackson’s Hey Ho Western Civ Has Got To Go protests had imposed on Stanford. Obviously Thiel and Sacks were wrong because Science. Blacks and women (nobody ever seems to care enough about Mexicans to mention them, even though there are many millions in California) are just as likely to found successful companies once Jesse Jackson gets to revamp education. I mean, who are you gonna believe is smarter: Jesse Jackson or Peter Thiel?
Then, in 1998, Sacks, Thiel and a handful of others — overwhelmingly white and male — founded PayPal, which made them all very rich. Since then, the PayPal Mafia, as these men are known in Silicon Valley, have seeded companies, founded companies and sold companies — in effect, financing another generation of (mostly) young white men.
So, Sacks and Thiel have tested their discredited theories, using themselves as their test subjects, and …
… But, as Kantor pointedly asks in a short introduction to Sacks’s email, if Silicon Valley is truly a meritocracy, “why do mostly men prevail?”

This is a question that has become increasingly urgent. This summer, Jesse Jackson shamed a number of important Silicon Valley companies, including Google, Facebook, Apple and LinkedIn, into publishing a breakdown of their employees by race and sex. The numbers are appalling — something the companies were forced to concede once the figures became public. At LinkedIn, 2 percent of the work force is black, and 4 percent is Hispanic. Google is 70 percent male, with 91 percent of its employees either white or Asian. Facebook: 69 percent male and 91 percent white or Asian. When it comes to leadership positions or board seats, the numbers are even worse. Can this really be the result of “meritocracy?”
Yes.

I recall reading somewhere in a book on Chinese history of a top official at one of the Imperial Courts who was ethnically Russian but had aced the exams. He probably was quite trusted by the Emperor since he probably had few kith or kin in the capital city and so there was little likelihood in his becoming involved in plots against the Emperor.

Here’s another example of the phenomenon that is the moving goalposts of the definition of diversity. My bakkaball students at the House that Hope Built did not cheat successfully….after I revised the multiple choice tests to have two or more “forms” where I left the questions in the same order but rearranged the answers. I made this change mid-term. Suddenly, the “riders” in the class started to earn grades so low they could not have been accidental. I’m talking 8/100 or 12/100 on a 25 question multiple choice test. The”horses” grades did not change.
After three more tests, I explained what I had done. Anger ensued. Then, just for fun, I started printing some of the form A tests on the form B color stock and some of form B on form A. Administration was not pleased.
If the Silicon Valley wannabees are too stupid to cheat, I guess the narrative says we should help them cheat.

In EdRealist’s defense, I think the argument is not that Asians are dumb, or cannot recognize merit when they see it, or cannot be innovative. The argument is Asians tend to produce systems that benefit their own race first and foremost, even if that excludes other talent.
Would wager a small fortune there are not many gender nor race studies majors working in Silicon Valley spare the throwaway corporate HR jobs that waste resources in many companies. In my brief Wall Street experience and from those I know still working there longterm such offices are viewed as a necessary evil joke. Go for a day of “diversity training” and get it over with. And that’s where the beautiful Mrs. Kapor Klein comes in to laugh in the face of reality and experience for a price.

Torvalds, a Swedish Finn born and educated in Finland, currently resides in the US. He had no problem getting in and being given a visa, because the caliber of his work has proven so huge he qualified for a completely legitimate visa under the "exceptional worker" category. In reality, he's a technically competent systems programer, but not in the realm of the hyper-able. Stallman, by contrast, was famously able to hold his own implementing a version of the MIT Lisp Machine against an entire sizable squad of Symbolics personnel-mostly MIT star graduate students, and thus some of the most elite "hackers" on planet-who were another, more well funded group attempting the same. His massive success came about because he was in the right place at the right time with enough skills and aptitude to realize he could do something, and that something was waiting to happen.
With Torvalds, as in a few dozen or hundred other cases, the system worked perfectly. The problem is that the "truly great programmers" are a very tiny group. There are many more board certified neurosurgeons in America-or probably even in the New York metro area-than there really are "truly great programmers" in the world. Therefore, such programs bring in tens, hundreds, or thousands of mediocre-to-pretty-good programmers for each "truly great programmer".
Another issue is that "truly great programmers" tend to write code that no one else maintain, at least not at anywhere near the same level. In a lot of cases, it really is better to have merely competent people and give them the tools to create merely good-but well structured and well documented-code. It won't be as fast but it will be extensible, maintainable, and if needed others can be recruited to replace the original programmers at any time.
If you racially turn Silicon Valley into Detroit by way of affirmative action, you will NEVER AGAIN see any new technological inventions/advancements come out of Silicon Valley.
Blacks are just not a tech savvy race. If they were, Sub Saharan Africa would have their own version of Silicon Valley but they don’t.
East Asia has their own version of Silicon Valley, but not the dark Continent where Michael Brown’s ancestors come from.

As Ben Espen sez, I’m not questioning their ability to identify talent–so long as it’s from the same race, country, class, and gender as they are. I seem to recall Britain had to create a law banning caste discrimination among Indian immigrants.

There was also that recent NY Times article about a Fujian illegal immigrant who traveled from one Chinese restaurant to another, all over the country. The employers weren’t putting ads in the paper. They wanted cheap labor that spoke Chinese.
And the big H1B visa shops aren’t hiring from a wide range of countries.
I worked at a Indian “consulting” house in the mid-90s, and I was the only white person around, and only because I had a hard-to-find specialty. Everyone did a doubletake when I walked in a room. (Same doubletake I get in my neighborhood now, where I’m the only white person in a 3 mile radius.)

Same experience for me in my graduate Computer Science classes at the University of Florida in the late '90s. One attractive Indian female classmate actually asked me "what country I was from."
First, the generational factor. First generation immigrants tend to hire each other very strongly, whether Asian or not. You think earlier German or Irish immigrants (let alone Jewish immigrants) didn't prefer their own ethnic kin in hiring? This is hardly unique to Asians. Indeed, same thing happens with non-Asian immigrants today, including white ones (first generation Afrikaner immigrants, for example, also have extremely high group cohesion; in some states where is a large number of Afrikaners such as Colorado, they have frequent gatherings and social networking events; I attended one as a guest once and was shocked by how so many people seem to know each other so intimately).
This behavior tends to fade with subsequent generations of Asians just as it did with earlier European immigrants. I have an example who is one of my neighbors. He is a second generation Korean and a lawyer who started his own firm with his white partner (I think they went to law school together and worked at the same firm before). Their law firm's ethnic composition mimics that of Silicon Valley firms (around 75% white and 25% Asian). I would posit that by the third and fourth generations, East Asian-American hiring practices are indistinguishable from white ones (for that matter, that third or fourth generation East Asian is highly likely to be part white, given the high intermarriage rates with whites, around 35% among American-born males and 45% among American-born females).
Second, the size factor. The vast majority of small firms employs family and friends. The vast majority of Asian-founded firms in this country are very small. It's natural, when you start out your own small business, that you hire family and friends. Hence the low "diversity hiring" among Asian firms. As the firms grow, however, they hire outside talent. The ones that insist on nepotism as size and complexity of the firms grow tend to fail (e.g. Wang Laboratories; and even Wang had a huge number of non-Asian - vast majority white - employees when it had over 33,000 employees total at its peak).
Third, the geographic factor. In areas with a large number of co-ethnics, preference for co-ethnics tends to be high (e.g. CA and NY). Away from such areas, however, "diversity hiring" tends to increase (my local Korean-owned liquor store is staffed by blue collar whites at the cash register and Hispanics in the back, apparently). No brainer there. Again, this lends evidence to the idea that immigration level should be reduced in order to accelerate assimilation of the existing ones (an area of rare agreement between you and me).
Fourth, the ethnic difference factor. Different Asian ethnic groups tend to have different rates of "diversity hiring." You are not going to find a lot of Japanese-American-founded businesses that insist on hiring only ethnic Japanese. On the other hand, it is common for Indian-American firms to prefer Indians. The above three factors come into play as do several others ones related to varying rates of assimilation (good proxies would be intermarriage rates and origin country language retention rates, for example Chinese-Americans tend to retain their original languages at higher rates than Korean- and Japanese-Americans do through generations).

Startups aren’t just about ability, they’re also about risk tolerance and willingness to put your whole life on hold for a few years while you focus intensely on getting your company to succeed. It wouldn’t be a big shock if that appealed less to women than men, for both cultural and biological reasons. Similarly, it wouldn’t be a shock if willingness to take that kind of risks (as opposed to seeking out a safer, more stable job with less upside and less downside) was distributed differently among people from different countries and even different ethnic groups within the US.
I think sometimes it’s easy to forget how unnatural it is to obsess over diversity in hiring, housing, etc. It seems to me like the overwhelming majority of people across time and in different places tend to prefer to hire, do business with, live close to, marry, etc., people more-or-less like themselves. That’s a desire that most modern Americans probably have much less of than almost anyone else you can find, largely because of our country’s history of mixing together lots of different sets of immigrants from different countries, but also supplemented by decades of propaganda efforts to make us at least pretend to want diversity.
The surprise is not that Pakistanis or Chinese who come to the US often prefer to hire other Pakistanis or Chinese. The surprise would be if that *didn’t* happen.
The narrative says that blacks are underclass because they can be identified and kept down. The narrative says that meritocracies are the last vestige of the plantation system. The narrative says that blacks perform as well as whites, and any test or job requirement that says otherwise is fraudulent.
Some observations on the narrative: Those who cannot follow logic, only the narrative, see nothing wrong with constructing fraudulent academic systems, cheating on tests, or on disputing valid test results. It is inconvenient for them to assign any validity to test results that do not advance the narrative. I suspect now that we have a majority of narrative believers in government jobs that make use of touchy-feely skills, such as HR, that the tests themselves that seek to predict success in government or service industry careers have been modified to predict success for blacks. I suspect fraud.
The narrative now says that Google et al must employ large numbers of blacks. Those who wrote the narrative, being of the mindset that cannot think logically, believe there will be no consequence.

Yeah, SV has tons of diversity in all kinds of directions–people from lots of different countries, many nonwhites (almost always South or East Asian), lots of people with oddball beliefs and unconventional lifestyles. But they don’t have the kind of diversity valued in US political circles, mainly due to historic discrimination and the way voting blocs line up.

Here’s how the rhetorical technique works.
The diversity issue that usually kicks off the “concern” is gender diversity. This is the only one that anybody really cares about, or seriously expects to have some “remedy” (where by “remedy” is meant some extra special privileges granting members of a group immediate and unmerited powers and status). There are just too few blacks or Latinos who have a hope in hell of making it in Silicon Valley, so increasing their numbers is just a joke and a ruse. But there are tons of upper middle class women who imagine themselves big shots because they went to all the right schools, worked hard, and got good grades. They think they deserve the power status and money of the best of Silicon Valley.
But here’s their problem, politically. They look and act like spoiled brats. They have had all kinds of Daddy’s money thrown at them throughout their lives, and all the honors academically anybody might ever seek. But they throw a tantrum when they can’t seem to perform in the real world of STEM and in management the way they think they should, given their unbelievable awesomeness. They don’t look like underdogs, they look like Richie Rich with an attitude.
So they make common cause with those who seem a lot more sympathetic, for example blacks and Latinos.
It may be just barely acceptable to suggest the biology thing when it comes to gender issues, or at least to hint at it. Larry Summers may have eventually lost his job in no small part because he openly suggested such a thing, but he hung on for some time, and it was no less politically fraught a job than the Presidency of Harvard. But to suggest in any way the same sort of issue with Blacks and Latinos is unforgivable and immediately fatal to a career.
Beyond this, it is also far less dangerous to deviate from orthodoxy on gender issues because women’s relative lack of success can be attributed to less toxic biological causes, such as a woman’s greater interest in child rearing, or perhaps social interactions more generally.
Therefore, to say,

Is to forestall any kind of suggestion that women’s relative lack of success is in any way based on biology, making any such assertion the equivalent to the most taboo claim of all: that certain groups, blacks as a most noxious case, fail to achieve because they aren’t as smart as others based on biology.

the beauty of a free market is that if a company that discriminates fails, the problem fixes itself.
Can you elaborate on the type of diversity that is valued in US political circles and how historic discrimination has prevented it in SV?
There is a kind of diversity that is politically valued in the US, for historical reasons (discrimination in the past) and based on how voting blocs line up. That comes down to demanding jobs for blacks and Hispanics, and also to demanding more good jobs for women.
SV has a lot of diversity, but almost none is the right kind to fit with what is politically valued.

You don’t need to be rich to “take a chance.” as an entrepreneur. That was back in the nineties. The author of the article cited needs to do a little more due diligence before posting claims as if they were fact. Any kid can write an app, with very little money. If the app does well, poor kid does well. Very little to no risk.

The article Steve cites is a load. Silicon Valley is nothing if not a meritocracy. Their survival depends on it. Anyone who’s read all the mournful cries whenever Apple rolls out a new system architecture will understand why bad code isn’t an option. If you don’t have the IQ and the mental tenacity that is required to write good code, you won’t be hired no matter what ethnicity you are. Bad coders can incite class action suits agains software makers. Imagine you’re a lousy coder and/or manager writing for “Quicken.” All hell can break loose fast and easy. Software and hardware companies can’t allow for affirmative action hiring. They would be planting the seeds for their own destruction.
So we will never see black folks in any significant numbers writing code for Facebook. Just like we’ll never see Asians in significant numbers playing for the NBA.
Outside some critical areas, SV has consistently chosen cheap labor over code quality time after time. Its one reason I use Open Source mostly now -- the code quality is no worse, often times better (interfaces are terrible I grant you).

“We have agreed to having a working group deal with the racial bias and lack of diversity in Hollywood,” said Sharpton.
He said Sony would work closely with his National Action Network, the National Urban League, the NAACP and the Black Women’s Round Table to “see if we can come up with an immediate plan to deal with it.”
The meeting, held behind closed doors at the Greenwich Hotel, also included National Urban League president Marc Morial.

Yeah, I don’t buy the notion that the Asians in SV are all there by “merit”. Many of them are there because some of them got in by merit and then used their position to bring in as many of their countrymen as possible.
Sun Microsystems, I'm told was the poster boy for that. The company was once the primary vendor of high powered workstations, but consistently went for mediocrity vs. quality and eventually were replaced by PCs running Linux. Entire divisions of the company's software teams were populated by immigrants so raw they would break toilets by attempting to squat on top. This made regression to the mean inevitable. NeWS, a superior windowing system was allowed to fail and X Windows, free but ugly, replaced it. Large numbers of users of the machines wound up also buying a PC for each user as well simply to support Word, Outlook and other common PC apps because only Unix wizards could use the native tools even though Unix was far more powerful and dependable than Windows up through at least Windows NT 4. Sun had the feedback from its user base, knew of the problems, but their software development inhouse just did not possess the needed aptitudes and sense of the issue to do much. Consequently, the SPARCstation wound up slowly being pushed out by PCs.
It was a shame because the SPARC processor, Open Firmware, and SBus peripherals were far, far better than what was on the PC then. More space and energy efficient, easier to set up, better in every way.
An example of how the victors get to rewrite history. In fact the original spreadsheet program was VisiCalc, designed and encoded by Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston. Lotus basically stole Bricklin’s and Frankston’s innovations via a defecting employee, improved the product to take over the market, and eventually got away with the original theft by overwhelming Bricklin and Frankston via litigation that dragged on for years. Basically Kapor oversaw a very successful piece of industrial espionage.
It's amazing how fast history gets rewritten. As one of the founders of Visicalc once said ( I think it was Bricklin)- "The only thing between us and the success of Lotus was a patent" (paraphrasing). At the time, a judge had ruled that software could not be copyrighted. ( This was over the JS&A case of copying a chess game- remember the cover of 80-micro with a judge on it?) Basically, MANY companies got VERY RICH through intellectual theft. Remember CP/M and Digital Research? (which looked an awful lot like RSTS/11 for the DEC PDP11 series, btw). Basically Microsoft purchased for $50,000 (IIRC) a CP/M clone for 8086 architecture which copied the "look and feel" of CP/M 2.1 and rebranded it as DOS 1.0. They retained the right to sell it to other vendors, which made Microsoft very, very rich. If the same laws had been applied to operating systems, Microsoft would be a footnote in history today.
Of course, when other tried to do similar things to the thieving companies, they lawyered up. Remember "The Twin"? It was a Lotus 1-2-3 clone for $99. It used completely different code, but the same multi-key commands and interface. Lotus successfully sued them out of business. Shortly afterwards, the same issues arose in BIOS chips for PC's. For some reason (a lawsuit I missed?) this was overlooked and allowed to continue, leading to hundreds of PC Clone manufacturers.
Remember the days of using Flight Simulator as a benchmark of system compatibility?
Heck, remember why EBCIDIC was invented? To maintain an IBM monopoly.

July 13, 2014 – Billionaires Press for Open Borders
As I often note, the key objective of American billionaires is open borders to allow a flood of desperate workers (including skilled workers) to drive down wages further. This is part of what economist William Greider calls, the “Brazilination” of the USA; becoming a nation of super wealthy 1% and impoverished workers with no middle class. President Obama wants to force “immigration reform” on a nation whose people strongly oppose this objective. He began by halting all non-serious criminal deportations and pressing for a second amnesty. This resulted in a bigger flood of poor refugees that made Obama’s job more complex. Last week, a train derailed in Mexico leaving 1300 “migrants” stranded, yet no one expressed alarm that this one train is evidence of a mass, uncontrolled invasion of the USA.
Obama blames Republicans for not following orders. The US Chamber of Commerce funnels millions of dollars to Republican congressmen, but most congressmen of BOTH parties refuse to sell out. Angry billionaires blame workers who they demean as: extreme tea party types, racists, or nativist. America’s biggest billionaires, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and Sheldon Adelson recently authored an opinion piece in the New York Times where they demanded action. In particular, they want unlimited visas for skilled workers so they can lay off higher paid American workers. The medical industry already has an unlimited supply of J visas, which is why you see mostly foreigners working in our hospitals.
They say that foreigners who we train in American universities must be allowed to stay and work. I say that we should train American workers at our universities who are already allowed to work here! You might think the Democratic party would openly oppose open borders since they claim to represent working Americans. This is a ruse since they are funded by the same billionaires as the Republicans. Their main “liberal” mouthpiece, The Huffington Post, even posted an article about the billionaires pushing for open borders to prove that everyone understand the benefits. This is a good example of media spin, as the HuffPo article focuses on the billionaires criticizing the GOP, with no mention of their very unpopular idea of unlimited “skilled” work visas.
The comments afterwards are interesting because many true pro-working class liberals and progressives strongly oppose open borders, and are attacked by the weak minded who are naively anti-worker and anti-American. Some claim that “we” are responsible for economic problems abroad, so powerless American workers must tolerate an invasion of poor workers (that benefit American corporations) because American corporations caused disruptions in Latin America decades ago with military invasions and NAFTA.
If our nation truly has a shortage of skilled workers, why don’t these billionaires and their spokesman B. Obama propose a training plan for unemployed and underemployed American workers? It’s interesting to watch this battle between billionaires and their puppets in Washington DC against American workers, who strongly oppose another amnesty and work visas, despite misleading corporate funded polls that pretend voters are indifferent. I suspect this last battle for American democracy will fail, reinforcing Mark Twain’s comment a century ago: “If voting made any difference they wouldn’t let us do it.” Welcome to New Brazil.

A few days ago, Microsoft founder Bill Gates joined two of our nation’s other multi-billionaires calling for unlimited work visas for skilled STEM workers. We are told this is needed because of a shortage of skilled Americans. Today, Microsoft announced the largest layoffs in its history. Up to 18,000 Americans will be fired as Microsoft continues to enjoy strong profits. The process began by sending a layoff notice by e-mail to 12,500 dedicated workers. Note that Hewlett-Packard laid off 34,000 Americans this past year.
Wow. You are so right. Good catch. What about the NFL? Mostly or all men? I mean, I am not that much of a sports fan, so it is hard to keep straight which professional leagues include the full spectrum of genders.

As (an unfortunate) user Quickbooks Pro, I find the Mac version export to PC option works horribly, with nasty bugs that leave major accounts and transactions missing when exporting to PC versions. Worse, there are three PC versions, only one of which can read/write the other PC versions. The logfile is binary and prone to corruption. The H1B era of Microsoft is if anything, even worse.

As for technology, the West’s advantage has been that next door rivals would gobble up neighbors if they didn’t adopt technology. That’s why firearms spread so rapidly in the West (you could conquer your knight-reliant neighbor) and so slowly in China (which was so big it had no effective dangerous rival for much of its history). Even though they were invented in China. Same with the magnetic compass and deep sea navigation. The Portugese were always afraid of the Spaniards, so unlike the Chinese burning the Great Fleet to the waterline and executing the Admiral; the Portugese sought constant navigational advantage to trade for wealth and safety (from Spain, from the Moors, etc.).
We don’t have much of a perceived rival who is close by, dangerous, and desiring to conquer us. Thus there seems to be no limit to how we can destroy our few remaining advantages in service of the new non-White majority demands that it be made first among many in Silicon Valley and Hollywood.
Here in California, and especially Orange County, Whites are keenly aware we are a (barely) tolerated minority. Irvine went from thirty years to nearly all-White to what amounts to a Chinese colony with orbiting Korean and Malaysian/Indonesian enclaves.
I can’t emphasize enough how comprehensive and informative Chua’s book really is; and offers a scary road map for the US as it flips rapidly to NAM Majority if effectively it is not already.

Sony does not own the rights to James Bond. The Broccolli family does. That is their meal ticket. no one is going to put $300 million in a Bond movie headed by Kevin Hart. It simply isn’t going to happen.

It could be either that or it could be that Asians are over represented because they are on average more intelligent than white people. The same reason Jews are probably also over represented.

Secondly, given that there are only about 200M whites in the US, China really has about 6 times as many people who are capable assuming similar distributions.
Next, add in the probably 4-6 IQ point difference in the mean IQ, with the advantage possibly being China's.
India is different given that it has significant population substructure. It has maybe 300M with a similar IQ profile as US whites.
Of course, this is all compounded by the willingness of Indians and Chinese to work for less.
These companies don’t just hire geniuses. They hire thousands of people to staff their marketing, accounting, PR, advertising sales (which is the ones who don’t sell a product make their money), human resources, etc., etc. These are jobs that do not require advanced technical degrees, for the most part, or degrees from top schools or top programs. They don’t require geniuses or ace coders or anything like that. I am dying to know who they are hiring for all these jobs.
I am also dying to know what use these companies make of contract workers and outsourcing firms that don’t show up on their payrolls and temporary foreign workers.
I am not seeing how most white people are better off because high tech companies hire so many white people — if these companies wouldn’t hire someone like them or someone in their family. If the decisionmakers have a strong bias in favor of people from elite private schools or employee family and friends or people with the religious or ethnic backgrounds, that leaves out just about everybody but a few.
I can’t argue your point about certain industries being exempt from the “progressive” rules. I would just add the the financial industry and Wall St should be included along with the entertainment and high tech industries on the Wall of Shameful Hypocrisy.
The bigwigs of both parties and their financial supporters usually see themselves as very different from the average voter of their party. Not only that, the bigwigs and big donors often want things that are bad for the country and bad for most Americans.

If I were a black man smart enough to write good software, I’d be an idiot to actually make programming my career. It pays $200k tops (that’s if you’re *very* good). A black man as smart as that could make ten times as much as partner at a big law firm, chief of a major hospital, president of a university, etc.

In my experience the most lucrative career for the intelligent black man is just to ride the diversity train up the corporate ladder at a fortune 500 company. There's a lot of soft meat in the bureaucracy of the still profitable franchises of past decades.
I used to work at one such huge corporation, and there were a couple of nice clean cut black men who were in their 30s and probably 110-120 IQ. They were already high earning VPs and I'm sure if they played it right could have been the next Fortune 500 black CEOs.
Also, programmers these days don’t get their own offices, even their own cubes. You sit out in the open almost elbow-to-elbow with your colleagues. Does that sound like a high-prestige career?

Linus Torvalds is no Richard Stallman, but that’s why Linux is so huge. You may not think Linux is, but it is. Your car, if it was made after 2000 or so, has Linux embedded in the various controllers. Your appliances have it embedded. If you have an Android phone or tablet….Linux. If you have DSL or a cable modem, Linux is in there, along with routers, hubs, switches, and even keyboards. If you have a medical device like a pacemaker surgically emplanted, it well might have Linux in it too. In terms of numbers of discrete CPUs running on the earth at any given time, more Linux runs than all other operating systems put together.
Torvalds, a Swedish Finn born and educated in Finland, currently resides in the US. He had no problem getting in and being given a visa, because the caliber of his work has proven so huge he qualified for a completely legitimate visa under the “exceptional worker” category. In reality, he’s a technically competent systems programer, but not in the realm of the hyper-able. Stallman, by contrast, was famously able to hold his own implementing a version of the MIT Lisp Machine against an entire sizable squad of Symbolics personnel-mostly MIT star graduate students, and thus some of the most elite “hackers” on planet-who were another, more well funded group attempting the same. His massive success came about because he was in the right place at the right time with enough skills and aptitude to realize he could do something, and that something was waiting to happen.
With Torvalds, as in a few dozen or hundred other cases, the system worked perfectly. The problem is that the “truly great programmers” are a very tiny group. There are many more board certified neurosurgeons in America-or probably even in the New York metro area-than there really are “truly great programmers” in the world. Therefore, such programs bring in tens, hundreds, or thousands of mediocre-to-pretty-good programmers for each “truly great programmer”.
Another issue is that “truly great programmers” tend to write code that no one else maintain, at least not at anywhere near the same level. In a lot of cases, it really is better to have merely competent people and give them the tools to create merely good-but well structured and well documented-code. Sun Microsystems, I’m told was the poster boy for that. The company was once the primary vendor of high powered workstations, but consistently went for mediocrity vs. quality and eventually were replaced by PCs running Linux. Entire divisions of the company’s software teams were populated by immigrants so raw they would break toilets by attempting to squat on top. This made regression to the mean inevitable. NeWS, a superior windowing system was allowed to fail and X Windows, free but ugly, replaced it. Large numbers of users of the machines wound up also buying a PC for each user as well simply to support Word, Outlook and other common PC apps because only Unix wizards could use the native tools even though Unix was far more powerful and dependable than Windows up through at least Windows NT 4. Sun had the feedback from its user base, knew of the problems, but their software development inhouse just did not possess the needed aptitudes and sense of the issue to do much. Consequently, the SPARCstation wound up slowly being pushed out by PCs.
It was a shame because the SPARC processor, Open Firmware, and SBus peripherals were far, far better than what was on the PC then. More space and energy efficient, easier to set up, better in every way.
And Northeast Asians in South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong have created high-tech, 1st world economies. Hard to do that without identifying talent.
The Chinese are fairly meritocratic about selecting talent among Chinese ethnics. This is not true among more clan based societies such as the Arab world or Southern Europe. China is more meritocratic than Italy, for example. The Anglo-Saxon/Northern European world is one of the few societies to extend the idea of meritocracy to foreigners and outsiders. Certainly the Ottoman Empire, and some other multi-national empires through history, offered talented foreigners room to advance, but always on condition that the newcomers swore fealty to the Emperor and the customs and traditions of the Empire.

While Google has hired lots of women (who might be willing to work for less simply because of the status associated with working for Google) I notice when I visit there that a lot of them are Chinese women and most of them are youngish (less than 30) which suggests they are very inexperienced. I have also heard that Google burns people out as well.

However, it could also be sheer numbers, at least in the case of China. Since China has four times the people that the US has (and the US has significant population substructure) there will be, all else being equal, many more people in China capable of the work in Silicon Valley.
Secondly, given that there are only about 200M whites in the US, China really has about 6 times as many people who are capable assuming similar distributions.
Next, add in the probably 4-6 IQ point difference in the mean IQ, with the advantage possibly being China’s.
India is different given that it has significant population substructure. It has maybe 300M with a similar IQ profile as US whites.
Of course, this is all compounded by the willingness of Indians and Chinese to work for less.

Very few jobs including programming and engineering require geniuses. But the quality of people in accounting, anything to do with selling, and HR is likely higher than you think unless you have worked for a large company lately. HR is mostly about employee benefits, not getting sued and the like.

I suspect that Silicon Valley is going to come under more and more pressure to increase diversity.
Indeed, I see efforts in that direction already. Just recently Oprah had a special that my wife happened to be watching where they looked at how people who had previously been on the show turned out.
They looked at one black woman who allegedly started her own hair-care business when when she was 11 or something like that, who is now a Program Manager in Microsoft’s XBox division. (She was apparently also still working on her hair-care
business part time.) It seems like the business she started at 11 is going nowhere or otherwise she would not have to work at Microsoft, although they portrayed it as a strong independent black woman working in tech.
Now, HR is not a profit-making part of any company and its real function is to keep the company out of trouble and I imagine Silicon Valley will create diversity centers or something like that that they can staff with diversity hires but keep them from screwing up the company. If you have a few diversity hires here and there it is usually not a problem because they cannot do too much damage, but when you hit the 10% mark (as many cities have found) you start having problems.

I don’t know whether there are sex differences in average IQ. Lynn has published a paper claiming that there is some average difference. But in any case it seems much less than a lot of racial/ethnic differences. Clearly though men have advantage in math/spatial areas.

As for technology, the West's advantage has been that next door rivals would gobble up neighbors if they didn't adopt technology. That's why firearms spread so rapidly in the West (you could conquer your knight-reliant neighbor) and so slowly in China (which was so big it had no effective dangerous rival for much of its history). Even though they were invented in China. Same with the magnetic compass and deep sea navigation. The Portugese were always afraid of the Spaniards, so unlike the Chinese burning the Great Fleet to the waterline and executing the Admiral; the Portugese sought constant navigational advantage to trade for wealth and safety (from Spain, from the Moors, etc.).
We don't have much of a perceived rival who is close by, dangerous, and desiring to conquer us. Thus there seems to be no limit to how we can destroy our few remaining advantages in service of the new non-White majority demands that it be made first among many in Silicon Valley and Hollywood.
Here in California, and especially Orange County, Whites are keenly aware we are a (barely) tolerated minority. Irvine went from thirty years to nearly all-White to what amounts to a Chinese colony with orbiting Korean and Malaysian/Indonesian enclaves.

I think you’re right about the fact that the Chinese were complacent because they compared themselves to their neighbors and had little idea of what Europeans were up to until the latter had quite an edge.
However there may be more to China falling behind than just isolation. In the 17th and 18th centuries Japan was economically much more dynamic than China. Also in mathematics they were making progress. I believe for example that determinants and Cramer’s Rule were discovered by Japanese mathematicians somewhat before European mathematicians. Also in the mid 19th century when the Japanese became aware of just how far behind the West they were in science and technology they were able to catch up with astonishing speed.
So I don’t think China’s stagnation was solely due to it’s isolation. One big difference between Chinese and Japanese history was the Mongol invasion. This is also a big difference between the history of Western Europe and much of the rest of the civilized Old World (excepting Japan, North Africa, and Southeast Asia). Perhaps the rise of the West owes a lot to the devastation the Mongols inflicted on much of the rest of Eurasia.

I believe the earliest reference to written examinations in China dates to 143 BC but they probably go back much further. The alternative to the examination system was to appoint members of the aristocracy to governmental positions. But such individuals often had independent power bases outside the capital and their complete loyalty to the Emperor might be suspect. Someone who rose up from the periphery through the exam system to become a top bureaucrat would probably be quite loyal to the Emperor.
I recall reading somewhere in a book on Chinese history of a top official at one of the Imperial Courts who was ethnically Russian but had aced the exams. He probably was quite trusted by the Emperor since he probably had few kith or kin in the capital city and so there was little likelihood in his becoming involved in plots against the Emperor.

Well I have a good answer for you. I know a black man who is a genius and an exceptional coder. He likes coding but would probably not like being a lawyer or a wall street goon. Fortunately for his bank account, he successfully founded a company and is paper rich.
Granted for a black man with good intelligence but no creative or entrepreneurial genius you’re probably right.
But are finance and law really that diverse? They may still be too meritocratic.
In my experience the most lucrative career for the intelligent black man is just to ride the diversity train up the corporate ladder at a fortune 500 company. There’s a lot of soft meat in the bureaucracy of the still profitable franchises of past decades.
I used to work at one such huge corporation, and there were a couple of nice clean cut black men who were in their 30s and probably 110-120 IQ. They were already high earning VPs and I’m sure if they played it right could have been the next Fortune 500 black CEOs.
In principle they will hire anyone who can write solid code. In practice you need to get through the interview. I don’t know about the transexual pygmies but I have at least anecdotal evidence that once you hit 40, it’s tough to get hired by a startup. I’ve experienced it. I also have a friend who was in one of the early Y-combinator classes and recently (early 40s now) had a devil of a time getting a programming job in a silicon valley startup. He prefers the work environment. He works in the current technologies. He has demonstrated entrepreneurial ability and initiative (more important in some ways than programing ability). He doesn’t have a family to compete for his attention.
But startup programmers are supposed to be in their 20s. He also suspects that some of the younguns wouldn’t feel comfortable bossing around a geezer.

It is research that is guaranteed to delight men—and infuriate the women in their lives. A controversial new study has claimed that men really are more intelligent than women.
The study—carried out by a man—concluded that men’s IQs are almost four points higher than women’s.
British-born researcher John Philippe Rushton, who previously created a furore by suggesting intelligence is influenced by race, says the finding could explain why so few women make it to the top in the workplace.
He claims the ‘glass ceiling’ phenomenon is probably due to inferior intelligence, rather than discrimination or lack of opportunity.
The University of Western Ontario psychologist reached his conclusion after scrutinising the results of university aptitude tests taken by 100,000 students aged 17 and 18 of both sexes.
A focus on a factors such as the ability to quickly grasp a complex concept, verbal reasoning skills and creativity—some of they key ingredients of intelligence—revealed the male teenagers had IQs that were an average of 3.63 points higher. The average person has an IQ of around 100.
The findings, which held true for all classes and levels of parental education, overturn a 100 year consensus that men and women average the same in general mental ability. They also conflict with evidence that girls do better in school exams than boys.
They can’t honestly talk about IQ because then the intra-asian disparity would show that people from India are being favored over people from China in places like Silicon Valley. Now, one might explain this away by pointing to two realities: 1) English is an official language in India and 2) the caste system in India has resulted in an affirmative action “Brahman flight” to the west. But even so — to cause people to have to think intra-Asian differences takes them one step further from “blame whitey” and is therefore beyond the “pale”.
The “cognitive elite” aren’t any more politically monolithic than any other educated elite group. Like turtles supporting the world, it’s “Yankee-Cowboy War”* all the way down, (or up in this case.)

Torvalds, a Swedish Finn born and educated in Finland, currently resides in the US. He had no problem getting in and being given a visa, because the caliber of his work has proven so huge he qualified for a completely legitimate visa under the "exceptional worker" category. In reality, he's a technically competent systems programer, but not in the realm of the hyper-able. Stallman, by contrast, was famously able to hold his own implementing a version of the MIT Lisp Machine against an entire sizable squad of Symbolics personnel-mostly MIT star graduate students, and thus some of the most elite "hackers" on planet-who were another, more well funded group attempting the same. His massive success came about because he was in the right place at the right time with enough skills and aptitude to realize he could do something, and that something was waiting to happen.
With Torvalds, as in a few dozen or hundred other cases, the system worked perfectly. The problem is that the "truly great programmers" are a very tiny group. There are many more board certified neurosurgeons in America-or probably even in the New York metro area-than there really are "truly great programmers" in the world. Therefore, such programs bring in tens, hundreds, or thousands of mediocre-to-pretty-good programmers for each "truly great programmer".
Another issue is that "truly great programmers" tend to write code that no one else maintain, at least not at anywhere near the same level. In a lot of cases, it really is better to have merely competent people and give them the tools to create merely good-but well structured and well documented-code. Clever in several ways. Interest and aptitude for certain kinds of work isn't evenly distributed across genders. Aspies aren't evenly distributed across genders. &c.

The mean level of intelligence, and of various aspects of intelligence, is not the same in the two sexes, but the differences do not really manifest themselves until after age 16 (because girls tend to mature faster). On the Progressive Matrices, Lynn and Irwin found a definite advantage for males after age 16. The Wechsler’s is a more verbally-oriented test; on the Wechsler’s the means are close together. Women perform better on average on tests of perception and psychomotor skills; if these test components are removed, men tend to outperform women. Adjusted for body size, average brain size is greater for men.
Considering score variance as well as mean, one can see why Ivy League professors of math and physics tend to be men. An additional consideration is whether women are as genetically inclined to WANT to be programmers or abstract scientists.

There is a kind of diversity that is politically valued in the US, for historical reasons (discrimination in the past) and based on how voting blocs line up. That comes down to demanding jobs for blacks and Hispanics, and also to demanding more good jobs for women.
SV has a lot of diversity, but almost none is the right kind to fit with what is politically valued.
Some observations on the narrative: Those who cannot follow logic, only the narrative, see nothing wrong with constructing fraudulent academic systems, cheating on tests, or on disputing valid test results. It is inconvenient for them to assign any validity to test results that do not advance the narrative. I suspect now that we have a majority of narrative believers in government jobs that make use of touchy-feely skills, such as HR, that the tests themselves that seek to predict success in government or service industry careers have been modified to predict success for blacks. I suspect fraud.
The narrative now says that Google et al must employ large numbers of blacks. Those who wrote the narrative, being of the mindset that cannot think logically, believe there will be no consequence.

In the coding bowls of Silicon Valley, a lot of the coding cubes have been replaced by “open tables”, with coders sitting side-by-side. It can be fairly effective and it keeps floorspace cost down.
There are a lot fewer Jews (and whites) around coding in these places, the big ones with names that you’d all recognize, than you might suspect. In some of these places it’s >95% Indians or Chinese, depending. Most of the whites still around are of the “old and gold” variety, because they have some arcane knowledge that’s hard to obtain.
Maybe about 15-20(?) years ago a lot of the technical middle managers, the guys that actually run engineering teams, started hiring and building out their teams. In a surprising short time they were hiring all co-ethnics from back in the old country. I don’t think it was all calculated. They literally had trouble hiring American workers, to an extent that HR departments and diversity folks don’t want to acknowledge. I think a lot of American programmers originally just didn’t want to work for someone who was so little acculturated to the US. Why work for someone you have trouble communicating with? So these managers turned to their “old boy” networks, who were filled with people in India and China desperate to immigrate to the US and willing to do almost anything to do so. Top schools in India (IITs, etc.) were very soon placing something like >95% of their CS graduates oversees, probably the majority in the US.
I have been sitting around staff meeting with Indian VPs of US SV multinationals and listened to people complaining that they “can’t find anyone to hire” because they “have a reputation.” They are right. American programmers know the situation well. The Indian VP will say “you’ll figure something out”, which is code for figuring out a way to bring in more H1-Bs (and their families) from the old sod. These families soon have kids (US citizens) and grandmas in tow.
These folks are by-and-large, just typical programmers. Some good, some bad, most somewhere in the middle. As a group, they are employed because the keep costs down (as has been pointed out, a lot of this is because the constant over-supply (based on economic advantages of having US citizenship) enables Silicon Valley companies to engage in systemic, but informal, age discrimination. It’s just a beneficial indirect outcome of the process to these companies.
This weird situation, of hiring mostly programmers and engineers that take off a month each year to go half-way around the world to go back home (to do things like get their families to know their extended families) must be starting to have an effect on the boards of a lot of these large public companies (or at least the income of the companies the boards are managing), because you are starting to see more memos about “increasing diversity” (which I take to now mean hiring non-Indians and non-Chinese) and requiring hires to be approved at the top of business units with respect to diversity. Given the near 100% non-white state of the teams, this “diversity” cannot mean more anti-white hiring. It’s people getting worried about competitiveness against small ankle-biter size companies (often staffed by American programmers) that are capable of moving more rapidly.

Very few jobs including programming and engineering require geniuses. But the quality of people in accounting, anything to do with selling, and HR is likely higher than you think unless you have worked for a large company lately. HR is mostly about employee benefits, not getting sued and the like.

My point was that these companies have thousands of jobs that millions of Americans could do for them, not just a tiny elite group.
I wonder how many hire their own benefits people, their own mail room and photocopying staff, etc. or if they have outsourced these functions to other companies. How about the millions of display ads that Google places in websites around the world. Who does them? I would not be surprised to learn that 0% of Google’s staff are website ad designers — that when an ad has to be creaed they contract it out to somebody or some groups of agencies somewhere, probably not in the US.

In my experience the most lucrative career for the intelligent black man is just to ride the diversity train up the corporate ladder at a fortune 500 company. There's a lot of soft meat in the bureaucracy of the still profitable franchises of past decades.
I used to work at one such huge corporation, and there were a couple of nice clean cut black men who were in their 30s and probably 110-120 IQ. They were already high earning VPs and I'm sure if they played it right could have been the next Fortune 500 black CEOs.

I live in San Francisco which is nowhere near being a Chocolate city in terms of racial demographics, yet even here a high percentage of DMV workers are Black females. I am thinking, are most of these Blacks female San Francisco DMV employees commuting here from Oakland ?

The smartest Black guy I’ve met recently in Dallas has engineering degrees from Purdue and Georgia Tech (schools that would have accepted him if he’d been White). But, yeah, he’s in finance.
The way filmmaking is structured is part of the “problem,” presenting a constantly-moving target. Essentially, a new company is formed to make every movie. And disbanded after production is complete. By the time the diversity sloth comes around, the company is gone. The biggest difference between China and Japan is size. It’s much easier to consolidate a country the size of Japan than one the size of China. China has to spend more time and energy keeping itself whole. Europe (or western Europe) could have spend as much time and energy it wanted on making itself into a single, massive state, and still failed. China would probably have done better as at least two states, north and south. It would have allowed for a lot more competition.

I imagine the average Indian is more likely to have a more diverse circle of friends and acquaintances (mainly Asians and whites) than the average white simply because Indians tend to be in relatively more diverse school and work environments.

Black teachers are underrepresented in pretty much every state except Alabama, which has a very easy credential test. At no point are school districts overflowing with blacks.

None of them have gone to jail. The only place a few–not hundreds–are on trial is in Atlanta, but not for cheating on credential tests or cheating on student SATs. There isn’t a single example of teachers cheating on students’ SAT scores. The major cheating scandals on SATs involve Asians, not blacks. While a few black people have gone to jail for fraud on credential tests, the ones that went to jail are the ones who *passed* the credential tests.
And of course, the fact that many of them have to pay to pass the credential test would provide a clue to the less than painfully gormless. The credential tests are the reason there aren’t many black teachers.

Just examine the nightlife: you almost never see an Indian out with a group of people that isn't entirely comprised of other Indians. One of the most clannish groups you will ever meet. Think that has ramifications in the job market?
That’s generally the case with most groups. Most white clubbers and bar hoppers are usually in groups of whites.
I imagine the average Indian is more likely to have a more diverse circle of friends and acquaintances (mainly Asians and whites) than the average white simply because Indians tend to be in relatively more diverse school and work environments.

Black teachers are underrepresented in pretty much every state except Alabama, which has a very easy credential test. At no point are school districts overflowing with blacks.

None of them have gone to jail. The only place a few--not hundreds--are on trial is in Atlanta, but not for cheating on credential tests or cheating on student SATs. There isn't a single example of teachers cheating on students' SAT scores. The major cheating scandals on SATs involve Asians, not blacks. While a few black people have gone to jail for fraud on credential tests, the ones that went to jail are the ones who *passed* the credential tests.
And of course, the fact that many of them have to pay to pass the credential test would provide a clue to the less than painfully gormless. The credential tests are the reason there aren't many black teachers.

Actually, since the aforementioned late 90s, it takes a fair amount of smarts to COMPLETE an education major, since you have to pass the credential tests to get the BA, and the credential tests fail a huge number of black candidates. Then there's the pesky fact that many high school teachers don't have education degrees, so the SAT and GRE scores of ed majors don't tell you a thing.
Might want to stop embarrassing yourself by pretending you know anything about teacher demographics or cognitive requirements.

Many states allow alternate certification which means that, for example, an Agricultural Engineer who has taken a number of courses deemed suitable by the State DOE Certification section (which itself is diverse) is deemed suitable to teach, for example, AP Chem even though she (or he) has not a clue and all her AP students make a 1 on the exam. Yes, but I think a lot of that improvement stems from automation and technology. For instance, you can order a replacement license if you lose yours, and renewals were increased from 4 years to 6 years for those with a good driving record.

Even in the school districts with 98% black students you still see tons of white teachers in the Atlanta area. That is exactly the problem. Poles, Irish, Italians, and (notably) Ukrainians preserve their identic identities much longer when they emigrate and create better support networks for their co-ethnics. Ethnic Russians (not Russian Jews) tend to quickly melt away into the host population. He had no problem getting in and being given a visa, because the caliber of his work has proven so huge he qualified for a completely legitimate visa under the "exceptional worker" category. In reality, he's a technically competent systems programer, but not in the realm of the hyper-able. Stallman, by contrast, was famously able to hold his own implementing a version of the MIT Lisp Machine against an entire sizable squad of Symbolics personnel-mostly MIT star graduate students, and thus some of the most elite "hackers" on planet-who were another, more well funded group attempting the same. His massive success came about because he was in the right place at the right time with enough skills and aptitude to realize he could do something, and that something was waiting to happen.
With Torvalds, as in a few dozen or hundred other cases, the system worked perfectly. The problem is that the "truly great programmers" are a very tiny group. There are many more board certified neurosurgeons in America-or probably even in the New York metro area-than there really are "truly great programmers" in the world. Therefore, such programs bring in tens, hundreds, or thousands of mediocre-to-pretty-good programmers for each "truly great programmer".
Another issue is that "truly great programmers" tend to write code that no one else maintain, at least not at anywhere near the same level. In a lot of cases, it really is better to have merely competent people and give them the tools to create merely good-but well structured and well documented-code. It won't be as fast but it will be extensible, maintainable, and if needed others can be recruited to replace the original programmers at any time.

I’m talking about leading STEM innovation and development. That’s not the same thing as having an advanced manufacturing base. Germany has an advanced manufacturing base and better demographics, but it hasn’t been leading STEM innovation and development. Speaking of marketing, its auto industry depends strongly on marketing and brand value. In terms of manufacturing and reliability, German cars are relatively subpar and less reliable than many American cars, and the US stopped caring about making cars 30 years ago.

Forget the Japanese, now American and South Korean cars exceed German automotive reliability on average. I suspect that Chinese ones will also in short order. And, by the way, the Chinese-Israeli automotive company Qoros (joint venture between Chery and Israel) has a Chinese CEO, but most of the upper-level executives and management team is made up of Westerners (whites).

Not enough exposure to Bollywood?
First of all, among Asian females, East Asians are more desirable to American white males than South Asians for the following reasons. There is a history of white American soldiers bringing home war brides (Japan, Korea, and Vietnam). There does not exist a similar familiarity with Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi women. Men also prefer women of fair complexion, and East Asians are generally much fairer than South Asians. Furthermore, South Asian women, especially the economically upscale ones, tend to be obese compared to East Asian women, and white men, especially the educated ones who are open to interracial marriages, tend to prefer trim women. South Asian women also have a lot of body hair and have considerably less neotenous appearance than East Asian women. Men prefer women with little body hair, smooth skin, and a more child-like appearance.
South Asian males tend to intermarry white females at higher rates, largely, I suspect, because darkness, hairy body, and non-neotenous appearance are not as undesirable male traits. But they also share other obstacles their females face such as religion (Hindus famously abhor out-of-caste marriages; Muslims are no more welcoming of marriages with infidels; Christians usually reciprocate the favor) while East Asians, especially in the U.S., tend to be far more Christian. In addition to different religions, South Asians are also generally less Westernized than East Asians in their attitudes, attires, and lifestyles (e.g. how many Indians like to rock climb?).
Finally, for men, there is the issue of height and muscularity. Male height is of utmost importance to women. Short men generally don't do well with women. Average height of Indian men is around 5' 5" while that of average South Korean male is 5'8" and rising (average American male height is around 5'10"). You can draw your own conclusions here. As well, there is almost a complete absence of athletic culture among South Asian men (barring cricket) while East Asian males tend to participate in athletics much more.
Look at Olympic medalists; in the 2014 Summer Olympics, India had zero gold medals while South Korea, with less than 1/20th of the population, had 13 gold medals; and let's not even bring up the Winter Olympics. Also look at the American military. One sees far more East Asians than South Asians (and in the special operations community, where the super competitive, gritty, and highly athletic "never say die" males excel, South Asians are completely absent while East Asians are not unusual; for example, one of the SEAL operators who died during the Operation Red Wings made famous by the Mark Wahlberg film "Lone Survivor" was James Suh, a Korean-American, who is immortalized along with his fellow perished SEAL Matthew Axelson with a statue in Cupertino Memorial Park).
Of course, like the Halle Berrys of the world, there's a lot of cream in the coffee.

Not enough exposure to Bollywood?
East Asia has a long tradition of meritocracy, long pre-dating the rise of that concept in the West (which only became institutionalized with the rise of the Roman Church and its meritocratic and literate clerical organizations). While there is corruption and nepotism in modern East Asia, to be sure, it remains one of the most meritocratic (and egalitarian, judging by Gini coefficient) regions in the world. Obviously the more developed parts of East Asia (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and by ethnic extension Singapore) exhibit greater meritocracy than a developing one (China), but only someone who is ignorant in history and completely devoid of any experience in East Asia would claim that “Asians, left to their own devices… produce a meritocracy is risible.”
Until recently East Asian countries were very much closed (and arguably monoethnic and certainly monocultural) societies, so it was highly unlikely that non-Asian men would rise through talent in the region (though there was a fine tradition of that throughout the Mongol Empire). However, in the very recent times, there has been a growing number of “foreign” (white) executives in East Asia. South Korea, in particular, has made “globalization” a national ideology and has begun to install an increasing number of European and American executives at its leading companies. These are distinct from expatriate workers and represent a new and different trend.
And following this very trend (and rather like the presence of token Asian characters in American media), white characters are beginning to show up in K-dramas (and as with Asian tokens in the West, the white tokens tend to be stereotypes, for example an expatriate American character studying to be a Buddhist who is more appreciative of Korean culture than Koreans).
As Ben Espen sez, I'm not questioning their ability to identify talent--so long as it's from the same race, country, class, and gender as they are. I seem to recall Britain had to create a law banning caste discrimination among Indian immigrants.

I worked at a Indian "consulting" house in the mid-90s, and I was the only white person around, and only because I had a hard-to-find specialty. Everyone did a doubletake when I walked in a room. (Same doubletake I get in my neighborhood now, where I'm the only white person in a 3 mile radius.)

Sure, there is a strong in-group preference for hiring among Asian immigrants. However, there is a number of variables you seem not to understand that affect this behavior robustly.
First, the generational factor. First generation immigrants tend to hire each other very strongly, whether Asian or not. You think earlier German or Irish immigrants (let alone Jewish immigrants) didn’t prefer their own ethnic kin in hiring? This is hardly unique to Asians. Indeed, same thing happens with non-Asian immigrants today, including white ones (first generation Afrikaner immigrants, for example, also have extremely high group cohesion; in some states where is a large number of Afrikaners such as Colorado, they have frequent gatherings and social networking events; I attended one as a guest once and was shocked by how so many people seem to know each other so intimately).
This behavior tends to fade with subsequent generations of Asians just as it did with earlier European immigrants. I have an example who is one of my neighbors. He is a second generation Korean and a lawyer who started his own firm with his white partner (I think they went to law school together and worked at the same firm before). Their law firm’s ethnic composition mimics that of Silicon Valley firms (around 75% white and 25% Asian). I would posit that by the third and fourth generations, East Asian-American hiring practices are indistinguishable from white ones (for that matter, that third or fourth generation East Asian is highly likely to be part white, given the high intermarriage rates with whites, around 35% among American-born males and 45% among American-born females).
Second, the size factor. The vast majority of small firms employs family and friends. The vast majority of Asian-founded firms in this country are very small. It’s natural, when you start out your own small business, that you hire family and friends. Hence the low “diversity hiring” among Asian firms. As the firms grow, however, they hire outside talent. The ones that insist on nepotism as size and complexity of the firms grow tend to fail (e.g. Wang Laboratories; and even Wang had a huge number of non-Asian – vast majority white – employees when it had over 33,000 employees total at its peak).
Third, the geographic factor. In areas with a large number of co-ethnics, preference for co-ethnics tends to be high (e.g. CA and NY). Away from such areas, however, “diversity hiring” tends to increase (my local Korean-owned liquor store is staffed by blue collar whites at the cash register and Hispanics in the back, apparently). No brainer there. Again, this lends evidence to the idea that immigration level should be reduced in order to accelerate assimilation of the existing ones (an area of rare agreement between you and me).
Fourth, the ethnic difference factor. Different Asian ethnic groups tend to have different rates of “diversity hiring.” You are not going to find a lot of Japanese-American-founded businesses that insist on hiring only ethnic Japanese. On the other hand, it is common for Indian-American firms to prefer Indians. The above three factors come into play as do several others ones related to varying rates of assimilation (good proxies would be intermarriage rates and origin country language retention rates, for example Chinese-Americans tend to retain their original languages at higher rates than Korean- and Japanese-Americans do through generations).

Even when the German heavy industry was the cutting edge of STEM fields, German engineering was notorious for needless complexity that reduced reliability. One only needs to look at the examples of the Tiger and Panther tanks that the Wehrmacht used during World War II. General Heinz Guderian, the famed German tank innovator and commander, wanted to copy the Russian T-34 with minor changed and mass-produce them, but instead the German armament industry came up with the designs that were expensive to produce and needlessly complicated. Initial deployments of both models were disastrous, with most having mechanical problems and many being captured intact.
In contrast, both Russian and American tanks of the period (though less technically advanced in many ways) were much more robust and reliable, as well as simpler and less costly to produce.
And today that German cutting edge is gone, but the needless complexity and the use of unproven, unreliable technology continue. Forget the Japanese, now American and South Korean cars exceed German automotive reliability on average. I suspect that Chinese ones will also in short order. And, by the way, the Chinese-Israeli automotive company Qoros (joint venture between Chery and Israel) has a Chinese CEO, but most of the upper-level executives and management team is made up of Westerners (whites).

That’s clear just by looking at Google photos of crowds in East Asian cities. From Mongolia down to Indonesia, the % of traditional costumes in negligible, whereas in South Asia, it’s not unusual.
I’m a 100% white guy so I can speak to this. To be charitable, in a nutshell, South Asian women are not attractive while East Asian women are.
Or have their kids master Mozart pieces on the violin or piano. I think native intelligence, disposition and natural curiosity play a part. I think South Asians do not have the native intelligence of East Asians and have to work hard, and singularly, to achieve academically and professionally. And I think they know it and are on guard to keep up appearances, which is often seen as insularity.
USA Today had a two-page feature on James Suh a couple years back. I read it to my combat-decorated WWII veteran father to give him hope for this country. Korean-Americans are church-going, patriotic and hardworking. They are the ideal immigrant group about whom everyone (except the blacks) has good things to say. Talk show host Michael Savage, who is brutal about most immigrant groups (including his own), idolizes the Korean-American community and is constantly referencing them as an example of the very best.

This shows that assimilation into the “WASP” culture is hardly necessary to be successful in this country. And Indian elites are not anti-colonial; they are still very much the British or American boot-lickers and tend to be in awe of or intimidated by white skin.

Remember when South Asians used to be classified as “Whites” in the U.S census ? It’s crazy to think that at one time Sri Lankans for example were legally racially lumped in with Swedes even though the average Sri Lankan is closer to Rachel Jeantel in pigmentation than they are to Rachel Maddow.
I think it's time that, for the purpose of the Census, "Asian" is further split up (Polynesians already have) among East Asians, Central Asians, and South Asians... and possibly Southeast Asians. Asia is pretty vast, and it seems silly to classify people of such variations as one large agglomerate.
I agree that the use of "Asian" as a statistical class is totally inappropriate. In the case of Polynesians it's not even geographically accurate. "Hispanic" is another statistical label that is very poorly chosen.

*I* certainly DON’T want people who *want* to be part of the “us” of which I’m part. (That is to say, American-Americans, or in other words, Whites of European Christian heritage).
In fact, it’s the ones who WANT to be part of us, but cannot, simply because they haven’t the genes to be us, who are the most dangerous immigrants. Because only we, White Americans of European Christian heritage, are us, and only we can be us. Remember when South Asians used to be classified as "Whites" in the U.S census ? It's crazy to think that at one time Sri Lankans for example were legally racially lumped in with Swedes even though the average Sri Lankan is closer to Rachel Jeantel in pigmentation than they are to Rachel Maddow.

Statistics I have seen on the White out of wedlock birthrate ranges from 25 percent to 30 percent. It is higher if you only include White trash demographic who look like they belong on an episode of Jerry Springer and lower if you only include the soccer mom/soccer dad demographic

Well, as with many populations, there is a genetic continuum, but if you compare, say, the Laotians and Koreans (high Siberian genes, minimal Austronesian genes), you realize pretty quickly that they are very different peoples.

There are very pronounced genetic differences between Northeast Asians and Southeast Asians. The IQ levels of Southeast Asian populations tend to be in the low 90′s. This level is above the world average of about 90 but IQ studies of Northeast Asians almost always give average scores above 100. Throughout Southeast Asia the Chinese diaspora plays an economic role very disproportionate to it’s size.
So yes, Southeast Asians and Northeast Asians are quite different. There also quite a bit of genetic variation over the whole of China itself.

Skin pigmentation is not a terribly reliable indicator of genetic difference. Although Sri Lankans are not terribly close to Western Europeans the first and most fundamental genetic difference among human populations is between Sub-Saharan Africans and the rest of humanity.
