The New York Times has a tool called Chronicle for telling you what percentage of Times article have included a particular word over the centuries. Here we see “racism” in green, “sexism” in black, and “transgender” in blue, all shooting up post 2010: the Establishment having a nervous breakdown.

  1. I took Steve Sailer’s base and added “homophobia” and “inequality.” 1.47% of all articles this year so far.

    • Replies: @Almost Missouri
Wait, but on Steve's graph, "racism" alone has about 1.47%. The total for all terms must be more like 4% or 5%.

    BUT WHY?

This is fascinating data. But why is the second term of the Obama administration a time of such racial tumult? One reason that I think we can rule out is the Obama administration and the federal government. I don’t think government under Obama during term 2 has meddled around in racial matters more than in term 1. The DOJ seems to have kept up the same pattern throughout his presidency. So then WHY?

    • Replies: @ChrisZ
Anon, do you think the underlying effect is that the coalition of fringes felt emboldened, maybe invulnerable, after four Obama years and a second national victory?

Another possibility is that the "certain" end of a permissive Obama presidency in 2016 caused said coalition to feel a sense of urgency to advance its more outrageous ideas. The two alternatives need not be exclusive.

In any case, I find that the Times does not so much lead the public in these things as give service to the views of its elite readers, egging them on when it seems propitious to do so.

I'd say that social media is the big reason:

    1. Ricochet self-indulgent sanctimony across homogeneous ideological echo chambers.

    2. Fortify said sanctimony with Likes.

    3. Amplify accordingly-- as if there is a worldwide competition called: "Nobody Hates [Racism] [Sexism] [Transphobia-ism] More Than Me!!!"

After a few years you get parabolic graphs like the one above, where the Y coordinate flies off the page into the stratosphere.
    , @Ragno
    Hmmm.....'but why?'

For that, I direct you to the work of M.G. Miles, in particular her current text, "When Progressives Get Religion":

    Are you kidding me?

Hysteria re: racism, secism, transgenderism is exploding because of Obama and his rhetoric.

Obama's actions and rhetoric has been the most racially and socially divisive in my memory. He's helped all lefties discover that the more they scream about "injustice" (real or imagined, usually the latter) the more power they get.
    , @AndrewR
Well people tend to take as much as they can get away with taking. The oppressed become the oppressors. Of course we already see trends reversing with the rise of Trump and pushback by universities against negroid malfeasance. 2015 may have been peak SJW.
    , @Almost Missouri
There might be something wrong with the NYT's graphing software.

If you download the raw data from the site, the graph looks rather different.

In the case of "racism" it's been at a high one-and-a-quarter to one-and-a-half percent since the early 1990s when Political Correctness became widespread and institutionalized. It then kicks up to 2% overdrive when the NYT needs to explain away the Democrats' midterm reversals.

    , @e
About the only outrage the Obama admin --and the NYTimes--hasn't gotten around to using the megaphone to advance is the age of consent, a federal age of consent, so that lefty NAMBLA donors get what they want.

Surely among some of the largest Obama donors there are some boy- lovin' men. I'd like to know what corporations they run.
    , @TomSchmidt
What's fascinating is the decline in "racism" even through the beginning of the Obama administration. The abrupt volte-face isn't 2nd term: it's right after the 2010 elections and the frank and immediate rejection of Obama having the power of a compliant house of Representatives. All of a sudden, reasonable objections to the Unaffordable Care Act become "racist" objections to America's first largely African President.

This is one of the greatest, clearest charts you've ever posted, Steve.
    , @San Fernando Curt
One possibility is to impel what Steve Sailer insightfully calls the 'coalition of the fringes' to aggregate around scattershot issues, appealing to each specific holy crusade - BLM, amorphous wars on women, tranny flak, etc. Obama won two terms by firing up the black and liberal blocs, but this year, there is no single figure like him or single fetish issue to fuse them. So, throw everything at the wall - all righteous causes great or small - to draw out an otherwise slackjawed electorate for the Left. Somehow, I don't see visionaries or chronic strugglers lining up behind Hillary. And Bernie will die on the sword of old-fashioned, ward-heeler backstabbing Democrats are famous for. So vote Left or the Klan is back, Haven Monahan is under your bed, and urinals won't be installed beside restroom tampon dispensers. As long as people THINK there's a battle going on, a battle is going on.
    , @Clem
Duh, because after he was re-elected, the gloves came off and he became emboldened to act in concert with his ideological views without fear of political repercussions. With a GOP majority in both houses of Congress now, he has nothing to lose by letting his freak flag fly. Some "legacy".
  3. It’s the current year! And has been since 2010.

  4. Speaking of New York, I was watching a documentary called Rubble Kings, it was about Black gangs in 1970s New York City. This was pre-hip hop/pre-gangsta rap, so the Black thugs were not wearing baggy clothes and they were not sagging their pants in the 1970s. They wore biker looking jackets, boots, and skin tight pants.

How many Baby Boomers here on The Unz are old enough to how Black gangs dressed before the existence of hip hop/gangsta rap?

    • Replies: @Steve Sailer
Tom Wolfe wrote a lot about the pimp look around 1970. The NWA gangsta rap Los Angeles Raiders fan look always seemed like they were trying kind of hard to look masculine. The pimp look didn't worry about that.
    , @Dave
Rubble Kings is a very good documentary about the complete disintegration of the Bronx in the 70's from the guys who were actually involved.
The biker look that the black gangs wore was lifted from the Hells Angels. The Angels were the only American counterculture of the 60's/70's that signaled toughness and masculinity and the black and Latin gangs in NYC latched onto it with gusto.
    Trailer for Rubble Kings-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrVIredfIGs
    , @RadicalCenter
Who the Hell cares how they dressed then or how they dress now? Fan boy of the big manly thugs?
    , @Harry Baldwin
Also, I'm not sure how many options you had in the early 1970s if you wore jeans. There weren't baggy ones available. I recall that they had the suppleness of tar paper and required multiple washings before they became comfortable.

The sagging fad has gone on since the early '90s, IIRC. Zoot suits were in and out in a few years, as were platform shoes. What is it with "saggin'" that has given it such longevity? Does it drive young ladies crazy with lust? Is it sublimely comfortable, and the rest of us just haven't caught on yet? I am mystified.

What's old is new! At least in Roxbury:

    http://www.bostonherald.com/news/local_coverage/2016/05/public_tiring_of_bike_gangs

Notice that even the center-right Herald wouldn't print BLACK bike gangs.

Now that the cultural marxist takeover of our society is complete, they can pathologize white America without resorting to their trump card, “anti semite”.
Thus they can abuse their high verbal IQs to more subtly advance Jewish interests at the expense of the larger gentile outgroup.

Precisely what I was going to say. It's not the establishment having a nervous breakdown. It's the exultation that comes right before the final killing thrust. The early celebration when you are up by three touchdowns with only a minute on the clock. Insert your own metaphor, but it's been rampant, shameless, public acknowledgement of supreme power since Obama came into office and the SJW dominoes continued to fall. Obamacare legalized via Judicial fiat? Check. Gay marriage via Supreme Court? Check. De facto open borders? Check. Drastically increased miscegenation in television and movies? Check. Normalization of transgenders? Check. Covert anti-white propaganda becoming overt? Check. On and on it goes. Victory after victory.

The Trump phenomenon has come as an unexpected shock, causing sudden panic and even more pushing of the agenda. If he wins this thing, he could be on his way to being the greatest American since George Washington.

  10. ‘Sexism’ drops in 1980s and most of the 2000s. I’m guessing a Republican presidency means they have to expend their energies fighting other things. Another reason to vote Trump.

    • Replies: @5371
"Feminism" blooms prematurely from 1912-16, then flowers in harmony with "sexism" and "misogyny" since 1970, and they have all expanded lately, though not to the same extent as "transgender".
Before 1960 "racism'' was not only nowhere, it couldn't even put distance between itself and "racialism".
    , @Penny Red
Homelessness was a big issue during the Reagan-Bush years but disappeared under Clinton like it did with Obama.

  14. This neatly confirms my rule of rhumb when consuming media: nothing after 1960. I don’t know what it is about that year, but after crossing it nothing is safe anymore and I find myself waiting for the part about how evil I am.

There's been plenty of talk about the childish historiography of the Left (that Tocquevillian "democracy denies its ancestors and hides its descendants" theme), but it also has to do with everyone since the baby boomers having been mass-educated to think in terms of decades to a degree far beyond previous generations. One of Steve's more quaint motifs is breaking apart and reassembling demarcations of eras.
  17. I need help!

Someone is passing around “memos” on all of this stuff. Feel privileged if you are one of the few who are getting the memos. I’m not and I’m starting to worry that there is something fundamentally wrong with me.

Remember, this is all is important stuff (see below) … since otherwise you are on the “out” and not part of the revolutionary change quickly reshaping the country. Does anyone have any ideas about how I can get on the memo list?

    A few examples:

I didn’t see this coming. Did you notice that it only took a few day for all Confederate Flags to be taken out of stores and off the market? This included Amazon where Nazi regalia continued to be for sale. I’m a student of Civil War history and was about to buy one and then they were gone.

Did you notice that Paula Dean’s media and publishing empire collapsed within a few days and she was wiped clean from the national media when an employee claimed her son used the “N” word in one of her restaurants? What did Paula Dean do wrong besides showcase unhealthy food? Somehow I don’t get it … but perhaps I should get it.

I didn’t see this coming either. Did you notice how the media began hyping full civil rights for homosexuals and lesbians and then the transgendered in the name of diversity in the face of a massive majority of citizens opposing the social changes. For homosexuals, this happened over a few days. For the transgendered, it happened over a few weeks. Then, we discovered that toddlers and adolescents can be transgendered. How blind we’ve been all of these years!

This shocked me. I thought that Federal officials had to take an oath to uphold the Constitution that specified the powers and authorities for governing the United States as a NATION. Then, John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, tells college students last week to be prepared for living without borders. “You’re about to graduate into a complex and borderless world ….” Aren’t we still a NATION? I didn’t get the memo. That upsets me.

    http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/kerry-slams-trumps-wall-tells-grads-to-prepare-for-borderless-world/article/2590596

I’m confused. Have you noticed that Blacks are now featured in at least 50% of all television commercials. In many, they are the lead ethnicity. In others, they are the only ethnicity … and it’s not Black History Month. One would think that companies are chasing their dollars since they must represent a new and lucrative market the rest of us are unaware of. Now I’m confused because the economic statistics from the SSA document that White net worth is 3.53 times that of Hispanics, and 4.16 times that of Blacks. Aren’t Whites consumers anymore? Why are we invisible?

    https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/ssb/v64n4/v64n4p1.html

Please help if you know a way for me to start getting the memos ahead of time so I can be part of this revolution. I’m tired of being a passive, confused observer.

What you are seeing is not a conspiracy but groupthink among a tiny cohort that all lives in the same few zip codes, goes to the same ten universities, intermarries, and all know each other. Charles Murray's SuperZips. And group think is different from conspiracy in that some people are starting to peel away from group think over ... money.

When Neal Gabler can't pull together $400 for an emergency, the power of group think meets eating ramen noodles in one's fifties at the end of the month. Causing dissent and revolt, over what else, the failure of group think to deliver money to pay for things.

As for Blacks in commercials and other things, the commercials and particularly the pairing of Black Male/White female are driven by microtargeting of certain White females (TV is almost exclusively female and gay audiences) enabled by Big Data on Facebook, Twitter, Google etc. Lexus, T Mobile etc. do this because a certain group of White women really, really like it. White males and other White women don't matter.*

But there is a limit ironically due to globalization. Over fifty percent of TV revenue now comes from overseas according to the Financial Times; and you'll notice things in TV and movies.

First, reality shows have declined dramatically as scripted shows are all over the place. Not just broadcast and cable networks but streaming services. Reality shows sell poorly overseas, overseas people like to rip off the basic concept and roll their own, which is easy and cheaper than buying the reality show and dubbing it. Comedies sell poorly overseas and note most of the new scripted content is aimed for overseas sales: one hour dramas. Chinese/Japanese audiences are not enamored of Black romantic leads, to say the least, which has been confirmed by Big Data i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Google, and the various online groups in China.

There are a very few shows with a Black female lead romantically paired with a White male lead; however Shonda Rhimes Scandal seems to be the only ratings winner and that one is likely unsellable overseas. For all the hype networks seem to be rolling out superhero shows and resolute older White authority figure men leading a diverse team of crime fighters, or quirky / genius rule-breaking White men leading a diverse team of crime fighters. That is what sells overseas and ironically globalization puts a damper or ceiling on tranny stuff, "diversity," and all the rest including feminism.

IMHO we are witnessing the culmination of the Fourth Great Awakening, a religious revival of not Christian but Post-Christian religious fervor. And that among only the small group of SuperZip elites who run things and are subject to group think and religious zeal. And ironically their zeal for globalism runs smack into Chinese, Muslim, etc. attitudes towards women, Blacks, gays etc.

  21. After the euphoria of Obama’s election in 2008, I think the professional left temporarily believed they had actually completely won the political debate so the 2010 midterm elections results were a total shock, as were the steady GOP gains in both chambers since that time and lack of punishment meted out to the party for opposing the Greatest President Ever.

The left ascribes all things it sees as problems to powerful external forces – it’s never the fault of its own behavior or its various constituent groups. Even W, who was not a great president, was able to extract enough political support from the public to occasionally force Dems to support his legislative priorities out of fear of being on the wrong side of their constituencies – the Iraq War, Medicare RX drug expansion, No Child Left Behind, etc. In contrast, Obama has never had the same effect on the public/GOP for any of his priorities and has had to rely on party line votes or executive actions to get his way. For the left this can only be due to irrational hatred of various kinds, not Obama’s inability to persuade the public to his point of view.

One reason that I think we can rule out is the Obama administration and the federal government. I don't think government under Obama during term 2 has meddled around in racial matters more than in term 1. The DOJ seems to have kept up the same pattern throughout his presidency. So then WHY?

    Hmmm…..’but why?’

For that, I direct you to the work of M.G. Miles, in particular her current text, “When Progressives Get Religion”:

    Are you kidding me?

Hysteria re: racism, secism, transgenderism is exploding because of Obama and his rhetoric.

Obama’s actions and rhetoric has been the most racially and socially divisive in my memory. He’s helped all lefties discover that the more they scream about “injustice” (real or imagined, usually the latter) the more power they get.

Rubble Kings is a very good documentary about the complete disintegration of the Bronx in the 70’s from the guys who were actually involved.
The biker look that the black gangs wore was lifted from the Hells Angels. The Angels were the only American counterculture of the 60’s/70’s that signaled toughness and masculinity and the black and Latin gangs in NYC latched onto it with gusto.

'Sexism' drops in 1980s and most of the 2000s. I'm guessing a Republican presidency means they have to expend their energies fighting other things. Another reason to vote Trump.

“Feminism” blooms prematurely from 1912-16, then flowers in harmony with “sexism” and “misogyny” since 1970, and they have all expanded lately, though not to the same extent as “transgender”.
Before 1960 “racism” was not only nowhere, it couldn’t even put distance between itself and “racialism”.

In the case of “racism” it’s been at a high one-and-a-quarter to one-and-a-half percent since the early 1990s when Political Correctness became widespread and institutionalized. It then kicks up to 2% overdrive when the NYT needs to explain away the Democrats’ midterm reversals.

  50. Could this be correlated to mass layoffs or recruitment of younger writers? You see it in anything that could be classified as ‘creative’. Famously happening to video games ‘journalism’.

2010 would be around when the crunch began to seriously limit career and savings growth for young people. Elite overproduction theory might posit that the emergence of grotesque hipsterism around that time is correlated with ambitious young people having no way to gain status materially or through their careers and so chose this new religion to show their intelligence and virtue.

Say what you like, being able to formulate and notice potential incidental ethical breaches requires a bit of an analytical mind. I’m really good at it, I think that is what drives a lot of religious moralists, they’re good at pointing out others incidental sins, it’s not even about the sins, it’s about showing how you were smart enough to notice and they weren’t. “Offering the Asian guy tea with milk!? Come on Jerry!”

They do it absent-mindedly and they do it to compete for status. It might also be the feminisation of newsrooms? Women form a group dynamic of not wanted to offend or agree with whomever is the most aggressive within limits.

It is troubling though, anything that doesn’t involve specialised skills and can even vaguely allow for the injection of ‘critique’ becomes consumed by them, seemingly out of nowhere. Heavy Metal journalism? One day they woke up and started talking about it having a ‘white male’ problem.

It felt like people who would previously have tried to get a job in the MSM found that blocked and started transforming these outlets instead.

    – Paul Krugman railing about the Trump administration.

What’s fascinating is the decline in “racism” even through the beginning of the Obama administration. The abrupt volte-face isn’t 2nd term: it’s right after the 2010 elections and the frank and immediate rejection of Obama having the power of a compliant house of Representatives. All of a sudden, reasonable objections to the Unaffordable Care Act become “racist” objections to America’s first largely African President.

Social media – good point. Go back six years earlier to 2004 and a large portion of the population were not even online. I can remember telling people they should get online and they were still not sure about the idea. By 2010 those same people were on Faceberg all the time and now Twitter, Instagram etc.

When you start noting each and every single instance throughout the day a person starts to realize what a total propaganda matrix we're all living in.

Every day I hear them constantly from morning till night through all media.

Yes, they don’t necessarily expand on or discuss them. Merely reminding us that such concepts are about is enough.

And common is the last stop before passe.

"Oh, and three Jews from Brooklyn invented gangsta rap."

Hip Hop was invented by African American and Puerto Rican DJs in underground night clubs and house parties in the ghettos of The Bronx and Brooklyn in the late 1970s while WASPs, Irish, Italians, and Jews in New York City were still listening to disco and new wave.

    , @Reg Cæsar

    I need help!

Someone is passing around "memos" on all of this stuff. Feel privileged if you are one of the few who are getting the memos. I'm not and I'm starting to worry that there is something fundamentally wrong with me.

Remember, this is all is important stuff (see below) ... since otherwise you are on the "out" and not part of the revolutionary change quickly reshaping the country. Does anyone have any ideas about how I can get on the memo list?

    A few examples:

I didn't see this coming. Did you notice that it only took a few day for all Confederate Flags to be taken out of stores and off the market? This included Amazon where Nazi regalia continued to be for sale. I'm a student of Civil War history and was about to buy one and then they were gone.

Did you notice that Paula Dean's media and publishing empire collapsed within a few days and she was wiped clean from the national media when an employee claimed her son used the "N" word in one of her restaurants? What did Paula Dean do wrong besides showcase unhealthy food? Somehow I don't get it ... but perhaps I should get it.

I didn't see this coming either. How blind we've been all of these years!

This shocked me. I thought that Federal officials had to take an oath to uphold the Constitution that specified the powers and authorities for governing the United States as a NATION. Then, John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, tells college students last week to be prepared for living without borders. "You're about to graduate into a complex and borderless world ...." Aren't we still a NATION? I didn't get the memo. That upsets me.

    http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/kerry-slams-trumps-wall-tells-grads-to-prepare-for-borderless-world/article/2590596

I'm confused. Have you noticed that Blacks are now featured in at least 50% of all television commercials. In many, they are the lead ethnicity. In others, they are the only ethnicity ... and it's not Black History Month. One would think that companies are chasing their dollars since they must represent a new and lucrative market the rest of us are unaware of. Now I'm confused because the economic statistics from the SSA document that White net worth is 3.53 times that of Hispanics, and 4.16 times that of Blacks. Aren't Whites consumers anymore? Why are we invisible?

    https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/ssb/v64n4/v64n4p1.html

Please help if you know a way for me to start getting the memos ahead of time so I can be part of this revolution. I'm tired of being a passive, confused observer.

What you are seeing is not a conspiracy but groupthink among a tiny cohort that all lives in the same few zip codes, goes to the same ten universities, intermarries, and all know each other. Charles Murray’s SuperZips. And group think is different from conspiracy in that some people are starting to peel away from group think over … money.

When Neal Gabler can’t pull together $400 for an emergency, the power of group think meets eating ramen noodles in one’s fifties at the end of the month.

White males and other White women don’t matter.*

But there is a limit ironically due to globalization. Over fifty percent of TV revenue now comes from overseas according to the Financial Times; and you’ll notice things in TV and movies.

That is what sells overseas and ironically globalization puts a damper or ceiling on tranny stuff, “diversity,” and all the rest including feminism.

The most amazing Black male/White female commercial is the Cialis one.
All the others only imply what is going on, while Cialis gets right to the point.
    So in-your-face to White males.
Which is fascinating because I would bet Whites use ED drugs much more.
Not because Blacks have less ED(maybe more) but because of cost.
Relatively expensive for average dude and often not covered by insurance.
How many middle age Black guys are buying Cialis/Viagra/Levitra to use with White females?!
    Not very many at all!

Also, I’m not sure how many options you had in the early 1970s if you wore jeans. There weren’t baggy ones available. I recall that they had the suppleness of tar paper and required multiple washings before they became comfortable.

Amen on 501's, which I have been wearing most of my life (outside of service time, of course). You used to have to buy them 2 inches wider and longer than your size and wash them twice in hot water to shrink before you wore them. Even then they were stiff for a couple of weeks. I once found an old pair of Levi's from early 20th C. that my grandfather wore, the twill was even stiffer back then.

Levi's were never popular in the black community as I recall, at least not the blue ones. The emphasis was on being slick and having style. This meant a tight fit for jeans (tan, other colors) or (more often) polyester slacks, with bells that became progressively wider into the '70's. Footwear with heels and no laces, usually some kind of pullover, and a full jacket, especially black leather.

It's another "spurious aristocracy" marker- to use the term borrowed by Tom Wolfe when he described 1970 gangsters. Aristocrats of yore dress impractically-long flowing robes. The impracticality of such dress signals the status of one who doesn't toil. You certainly can't toil if one hand is holding pants up all the time. It signals that one doesn't work, and doesn't have to.

After the euphoria of Obama's election in 2008, I think the professional left temporarily believed they had actually completely won the political debate so the 2010 midterm elections results were a total shock, as were the steady GOP gains in both chambers since that time and lack of punishment meted out to the party for opposing the Greatest President Ever.

The left ascribes all things it sees as problems to powerful external forces - it's never the fault of its own behavior or its various constituent groups. Even W, who was not a great president, was able to extract enough political support from the public to occasionally force Dems to support his legislative priorities out of fear of being on the wrong side of their constituencies - the Iraq War, Medicare RX drug expansion, No Child Left Behind, etc. In contrast, Obama has never had the same effect on the public/GOP for any of his priorities and has had to rely on party line votes or executive actions to get his way. For the left this can only be due to irrational hatred of various kinds, not Obama's inability to persuade the public to his point of view.

Why would W have to “force Dems to support his legislative priorities out of fear of being on the wrong side of their constituencies” when you’re talking about Medicare RX drug expansion and No Child Left Behind? Those are examples of some of the liberal programs W promoted.

A girl at the school, or maybe it was a boy, wanted to be known as “Xe”, or maybe it was “Zse” (first letter pronounced like the initial sound in Zsa Zsa Gabor) and did not want the school to say “he” or “she”, or anything referencing sex and this grown woman, who had gone to college, who was wealthy, took it seriously. And worse, she thought that mandating “he” or “she” was subjecting this child to unimaginable cruelty. And I thought our wealthy really are far too wealthy. My take on Chesterton: When you don’t have to worry about money, you will not thereafter worry about nothing, you will be capable of worrying about anything.

This is absolutely the best part and worth putting up with all of the rest – the lies about keeping your doctor, about Benghazi, the flouting of the Constitutional limits on the President’s power, the unprecedented extension of Federal oversight and micromanagement into school restrooms and the burden of proof in school disciplinary hearings, etc. They are all worth it because, thanks to BHO, we have finally put the great race question behind us once and for all. There are no “WHITES ONLY” signs left anywhere in America, not even on the door to the Oval Office, so we can finally put our racial obsessions to rest and focus on the “content of our character” as that great paragon of good character MLK instructed us. This is why old white lady Hillary Clinton must be our next President, because what family other than the Clintons has the character to occupy the White House?

  83. If you’re taking flack, you’re over the target, part 592:

Mexico fights back against ‘The Clown’

“What we found out is, again, that the image in general terms of Mexico was quite undervalued or more specifically out of date,” he said. “The image of the contributions of Mexicans and Mexican Americans was damaged and undervalued. And there was no clear image of the importance of the bilateral relationship. That’s when the Mexican government decided that, again, we need to do something.”

The contributions of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans? Help me out here, I’m drawing a blank…

For nearly a year, Mexican officials have chafed at Trump’s inflammatory comments, including his pledges to deport millions of undocumented immigrants and to build a “great, great wall” along the southern border — and to have Mexico pay for it. Just last week, Trump drew scorn when he tweeted “I love Hispanics!” along with a photo of himself eating a “taco bowl” on Cinco de Mayo.

Of course, the scorners can’t exactly explain their scorn.

While U.S. lawmakers from southern border states have been trying to reassure their Mexican counterparts (mindful of Mexico’s enormous importance to U.S. trade)

Which is more enormous, Mexico’s importance to America’s trade, or America’s importance to Mexican trade? To ask is to answer.

Carreño outlined to POLITICO a multi-layered initiative to burnish Mexico’s image. The plans, some of which are already launched, include greater use of traditional and social media, increased cultural outreach through Mexican consulates, and strengthened ties to American business and civil society groups.

As soon as we build that list of important Mexican and Mexican-American contributors, maybe Carreno can use it to recruit them all to his campaign. The biggest Mexican names that spring to my mind are all leaders of drug cartels. Maybe “el chapo” can help.

Peter Schechter, director of the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center at the Atlantic Council, said Mexicans are stunned to find themselves “the centerpiece of a nativist rhetoric that basically holds them as symbols of all that is wrong with our immigration policy, with our trade policy.”

“Do they feel ransacked? Absolutely. Do they feel this has come out of nowhere? Absolutely. Do they feel that not enough Americans stood up and try to counter-punch and try to explain what the realities of the relationship are? Yes,” said Schechter, who has extensive contacts in the Mexican government.

Well, they’re always welcome in Mexico. Given Mexico’s “enormous importance,” that should be consolation enough.

What does it say about Mexico, when keeping tens of millions of their own citizens in a foreign country is so important to the Mexican gov’t that they’re reshuffling their whole foreign policy apparatus? Anything good?

If they want their image to be more up-to-date, maybe they should put an emphasis on beheadings. That’s a relatively new Mexican trend.

Certain people, like transgenders, are obsessed with themselves, their psychology, and their own bodily condition. What they want, ideally speaking, is for the entire rest of the population to be equally obsessed by the issues of the transgender person. This is because transgenders are childlike narcissists with outsize problems, and they can’t understand that most people don’t give a damn about transgenders, and never even think about them 24/7, and are perfectly happy to go through life that way.

What transgenders want is attention. Lots of it. Mountains of it. They want people to obsess over them 24/7. Transgenders want to be the center of the universe, and are outraged that they aren’t. They have liberal sympathizers as enablers, and these liberals rattle like dried leaves in a windstorm in reaction to every whimper and sniffle from the transgenders. Unfortunately, liberals control most of the media outlets these days.

In the great transition from the news media of the 1970s to the 2010s, a few things were lost. You used to have tough-minded editors who decided what was news. Nowadays, those men have vanished, and as advertising revenue has dried up, media outlets are free to say what they feel because they don’t have to worry about offending their advertisers anymore. Reporters are now free to be what they really want, namely the village gossip.

This means that those people who get written about are those who are best at snagging attention. Our media has become a perfect democracy of attention hogs. Those who squeal the loudest, win. Reporters are, at heart, prone to histrionics, and they are drawn towards and are sympathetic to other people prone to histrionics like trannies, which is why reporters love to write about them.

In sum, silly people have silly interests. They’re rather write about Bruce Jenner than the national debt, because economics is boring and the thought of Jenner makes them all giggly and excited.

Well said. They used to call MTF transgendered "trannies" ... freaks ... who were obsessed with garnering attention to (what is that phrase?) "validate their identity". It appears that legal access to female bathrooms and locker-rooms is just a minor buzz in that validation process. Sexually exciting males is the ultimate validation.

Like Bruce Jenner, trannies tend to go to enormous physical and emotional lengths and expense to pull off their charades. It becomes their life project ... their life obsession. For those who can afford it, this includes dangerous doses of hormones that they must take the rest of their lives, breast implants, shaving their vocal cords, buttocks implants, plastic surgery on their chins, and (ultimately) the knife on their genitals. But none of this changes the fact that they are engaged in illusion. They are not females; they are males going to extremes in pretending to be females. They can never really "be" female ... and they know it, which is why they have to work so hard at trying to cross an ontological barrier that cannot be crossed.

So what are they left with? Trannies are obsessed with looking into the mirror to validate the credibility of their illusions. They are always doubting themselves because reflections in a mirror are never real and they know it. But still they try. So the rest of us have been enrolled by the Federal Government in a childish attempt at social engineering to act as mirrors to reassure the fragile orchids that their illusions are credible. But like everything else, open bathrooms and locker-rooms buttressed with the force of law will not be enough. There will never be enough. Looking at a plastic orchid in the mirror cannot ... ever ... turn it into a real orchid.

A lot of the people getting on board with Trump are just reading the writing on the wall, and acting accordingly.

The pundits and politicians on the right who have the biggest problems with Trump have those problems because a) he represents a nationalistic movement that is anathema to them, and b) he has exposed the utter absence of any popular support for the positions they hold dear. This holds true whether or not Trump in particular wins the Presidency. They are extinct, and Trump is the asteroid from the sky that's destroyed them. Even as pundits, how can they pretend to represent the Conservative wing, when it's only a few fellow pundits who believe in their version of it? They have no point or place.

What's the relevance of a Cathy Young or a Ross Douhat in this new world of nationalism? To be, now and forever, the Decriers of Record, the Social Justice Warriors of the Right?

The adaptable will adapt, but that doesn't seem to include any in the pundit class, and few in the politician class.

I tried the Download feature but I got the same numbers no matter what word I put in.

It’s another “spurious aristocracy” marker- to use the term borrowed by Tom Wolfe when he described 1970 gangsters. Aristocrats of yore dress impractically-long flowing robes. If you're taking flack, you're over the target, part 592:

Mexico fights back against 'The Clown'

"What we found out is, again, that the image in general terms of Mexico was quite undervalued or more specifically out of date," he said. "The image of the contributions of Mexicans and Mexican Americans was damaged and undervalued. And there was no clear image of the importance of the bilateral relationship. That’s when the Mexican government decided that, again, we need to do something."

The contributions of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans? Help me out here, I'm drawing a blank...

For nearly a year, Mexican officials have chafed at Trump’s inflammatory comments, including his pledges to deport millions of undocumented immigrants and to build a “great, great wall” along the southern border — and to have Mexico pay for it. Just last week, Trump drew scorn when he tweeted "I love Hispanics!" along with a photo of himself eating a "taco bowl" on Cinco de Mayo.

Of course, the scorners can't exactly explain their scorn.

While U.S. lawmakers from southern border states have been trying to reassure their Mexican counterparts (mindful of Mexico's enormous importance to U.S. trade)

Which is more enormous, Mexico's importance to America's trade, or America's importance to Mexican trade? To ask is to answer.

Carreño outlined to POLITICO a multi-layered initiative to burnish Mexico's image.

Maybe "el chapo" can help.

Peter Schechter, director of the Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center at the Atlantic Council, said Mexicans are stunned to find themselves "the centerpiece of a nativist rhetoric that basically holds them as symbols of all that is wrong with our immigration policy, with our trade policy."

"Do they feel ransacked? Absolutely. Do they feel this has come out of nowhere? Absolutely. Do they feel that not enough Americans stood up and try to counter-punch and try to explain what the realities of the relationship are? Yes," said Schechter, who has extensive contacts in the Mexican government.

Well, they're always welcome in Mexico. Given Mexico's "enormous importance," that should be consolation enough.

What does it say about Mexico, when keeping tens of millions of their own citizens in a foreign country is so important to the Mexican gov't that they're reshuffling their whole foreign policy apparatus? Anything good?

If they want their image to be more up-to-date, maybe they should put an emphasis on beheadings. That's a relatively new Mexican trend.

“Which is more enormous, Mexico’s importance to America’s trade, or America’s importance to Mexican trade? To ask is to answer.”

Even more germane is the question: Which is more important? Mexico’s importance to America’s trade, or America’s importance to America’s trade?

“If they want their image to be more up-to-date, maybe they should put an emphasis on beheadings. That’s a relatively new Mexican trend.”

Actually, it’s an old one. It’s just come back into vogue. Let’s hope they don’t revive the ancient mexican custom of ripping the beating hearts out of people’s chests. Although that certainly is “vibrant”.

    BUT WHY?

This is fascinating data. But why is the second term of the Obama administration a time of such racial tumult? One reason that I think we can rule out is the Obama administration and the federal government. I don't think government under Obama during term 2 has meddled around in racial matters more than in term 1. The DOJ seems to have kept up the same pattern throughout his presidency. So then WHY?

One possibility is to impel what Steve Sailer insightfully calls the ‘coalition of the fringes’ to aggregate around scattershot issues, appealing to each specific holy crusade – BLM, amorphous wars on women, tranny flak, etc. Obama won two terms by firing up the black and liberal blocs, but this year, there is no single figure like him or single fetish issue to fuse them. So, throw everything at the wall – all righteous causes great or small – to draw out an otherwise slackjawed electorate for the Left. Somehow, I don’t see visionaries or chronic strugglers lining up behind Hillary. And Bernie will die on the sword of old-fashioned, ward-heeler backstabbing Democrats are famous for. So vote Left or the Klan is back, Haven Monahan is under your bed, and urinals won’t be installed beside restroom tampon dispensers. As long as people THINK there’s a battle going on, a battle is going on.

    http://chronicle.nytlabs.com/?keyword=death

Precisely when there was a lot of it about (WWI & WWII), the term suddenly goes into recession. Then when there is not so much immediate risk of it, the term becomes more pronounced again. So the NYT wants to talk about big issues inversely to their actuality.

  109. @Anonymous
It's a feedback loop between a) the Obama administration amping up democratic voters with racial/gender issues b) the NYT trying to shore up plummeting revenues with manufactured-outrage stories, which do well on social media.

With regard to Steve's graphs, the latter is more important. The NYT's revenue is around 40% of its 2006 high. Further compounding their problems, is that most young, good writers have already fled traditional newspapers.

In five years, NYT will consist of:
    - Paul Krugman railing about the Trump administration.
    - David Brooks writing about the loss of civility.
    - Click-bait lists of "Top 10 Celebrities That HATE transgender rights." Basically, a yahoo.com for the underemployed, university coffeehouse intelligentsia.

Print, Your points, a) and b) are spot on. Nicely stated.

look at the wealth gap between Black and white

“White” is a rather broad term. Would you care to break this down further, so we can examine relative gaps between blacks and different groups of whites?

    Oh, you wouldn’t? I see.

And compare to this similar Google Ngram chart for the usage of the phrase "Judeo-Christian" to see when they wanted bailing out by the Christians:

It actually looks like it tracks republicans in office better than bad times for the jews (except during the 40s, not much bursts around 48, 67, or 73 (Israel’s wars))

Tyson Fury launches foul-mouthed rant about Jews, rape and bestiality - watch latest astonishing outburst

Maybe he's upset at the loss of Black Privilege, loss of relative importance of Race Privilege to Perv Privilege, Trans Privilege, Homo Privilege, etc. Sounds a bit like classic joke about the immigrant who steps off the boat, turns around, and calls the guy standing on the gangplank a dirty foreigner.

Genetic studies seem to show that Irish travellers – like Mr. Fury – are ethnically white.

  131. @Reg Cæsar

I thought it was 1963. Wasn’t that the year Penguin published that crummy book?

    Sexual intercourse began
    In nineteen sixty-three
(which was rather late for me) -
Between the end of the "Chatterley" ban
    And the Beatles' first LP.

    --Philip Larkin, "Annus Mirabilis"

I don't know what book you're talking about, but nothing beats Proust for "crumminess"-- I mean, four thousand pages about a pound cake? Is there a gluten-free edition yet?

That’s like calling “Ulysses” nine hundred pages about masturbation.

    • Replies: @Reg Cæsar
C'mon, it was just a joke. I offer no opinion on the quality of Proust (or Joyce, for that matter.)

I am wary of the quantity, though, just on general principles. I have never watched a "miniseries", for example. Life is too short.

    Yeah, it has pooping, too.
  132. “Holocaust” had a vertiginous rise from the time of that 70s TV series until 1998, but has struggled to get back to that level since then. Even at its peak it didn’t quite match the current frequency of “transgender”.

I might add that I completely hate that term. America wasn’t built on Jewish or even universally christian values, it’s a protestant nation.

  134. @Harry Baldwin
I'm partial to the early 19th century terms, spelled variously as "Musselmen" and "Mooselmen."

Take all the spellings together, they are usually far behind “jew” until the mid 40s, the frequencies are comparable from then till the mid 70s, after that “muslim” takes a big lead and become competitive with “christian” after 1990.

  135. Watch out for “trope”. Everything is a “conservative trope” or a “right-wing trope” now. Usually it’s a direct synonym of “hatefact” but can refer to any mildly controversial idea that the aggressive left isn’t fully comfortable with.

The aggressive left doesn’t have “tropes”, of course, even though it massively does. It’s like “ideology” – only their enemies (i.e. us) have it.

  136. @Jefferson
This recent Celebrity Net Worth article about Prince, refers to George Zimmerman as White, not even White Hispanic anymore but just plain White. It was written by a woman named Beth McDonald. McDonald is a Scottish last name. Who knew Triracial Peruvians look White to Scottish eyes.
    http://www.celebritynetworth.com/articles/celebrity/prince-secretly-donated-money-to-solar-technology-and-social-causes/

I notice more Left Wing articles lately are Gringowashing George Zimmerman as just plain White and dropping the White Hispanic part altogether. I guess White Hispanic is no longer a White enough term to describe George, it still sounds way too Ethnic. And we all know Ethnic = always good and White = always bad.

If Zimmerman is white, then the story the reporters want to tell works; if he’s Hispanic, it doesn’t. So he becomes white.

"I’d say that social media is the big reason:"

And as we have unsurprisingly come to find out, what's trending on Facebook largely consists of what Mark Zuckerberg wants to be trending on Facebook.

Yep. The power implicit in that statement is about a thousand times more important than the NYT’s desire to push SJW issues.

"It’s only a matter of time before the biological triggers of homosexuality and gender dysphoria are figured out and generations of the future will say..."

Yes. Parents of normal sexuality, though terrified of the GayKK, will privately choose EVERY. TIME. to inoculate their children against sodomitic urges and other sexual confusion. They'll feel awful about their choice, but will do it anyway because the world is so horribly homophobic [sic] that they must, with heaviest of hearts, choose inoculation to protect their children from homophobic [sic] bullying.

What has prenatal testing plus abortion done to the population of kids with Downs?

  139. @Anon
Certain people, like transgenders, are obsessed with themselves, their psychology, and their own bodily condition. What they want, ideally speaking, is for the entire rest of the population to be equally obsessed by the issues of the transgender person. This is because transgenders are childlike narcissists with outsize problems, and they can't understand that most people don't give a damn about transgenders, and never even think about them 24/7, and are perfectly happy to go through life that way.

What transgenders want is attention. Lots of it. Mountains of it. They want people to obsess over them 24/7. Transgenders want to be the center of the universe, and are outraged that they aren't.

Nowadays, those men have vanished, and as advertising revenue has dried up, media outlets are free to say what they feel because they don't have to worry about offending their advertisers anymore.

They're rather write about Bruce Jenner than the national debt, because economics is boring and the thought of Jenner makes them all giggly and excited.

Well said. They used to call MTF transgendered “trannies” … freaks … who were obsessed with garnering attention to (what is that phrase?) “validate their identity”. It appears that legal access to female bathrooms and locker-rooms is just a minor buzz in that validation process. Sexually exciting males is the ultimate validation.

Like Bruce Jenner, trannies tend to go to enormous physical and emotional lengths and expense to pull off their charades. It becomes their life project … their life obsession. They can never really “be” female … and they know it, which is why they have to work so hard at trying to cross an ontological barrier that cannot be crossed.

Looking at a plastic orchid in the mirror cannot … ever … turn it into a real orchid.

    Was it "Moslem" before 1989?

I recall that in the 1960s, all progressives spelled the word "Moslem" and only fuddy-duddies used "Muslim."

Of note, Edward Gibbon in the “Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” used the term “Musselman” to refer to Muslims in the first three volumes. In the notes to the 4th volume, he states that is dropping the term “Musselman” and will henceforth use the term “Moslem”.

  141. @Whiskey

The whole transgender/North Carolina/DOJ thing needs to be negotiated very carefully.
While it does have intrinsic importance, it is like the War On Woman:
a ginned-up controversy to help Hillary.
I have to believe it won’t have nearly as much traction, if any.
Trump will handle it more deftly.
    Also, SJWs have misread public.
Vast majority of folks think transgender public school shower rights are batshit crazy.

Also NRO, Will, Krystol, Jay Cost, Erickson.
These people are All In with shitty hand.
Perhaps Trump’s greatest feat has been getting people to show true colors.
Will even wrote that those who go with Trump out of expediency won’t be allowed to take part in the postTrump reconstruction.
    These people are delusional.
Victor Davis Hanson needs to bail on NRO.
At times brilliant author of Mexifornia is in wrong place.

I want to know what crummy book CARealist had in mind. I realize a lot of books were published in 1963.

I thought the Larkin poem cross-reffed the Profumo scandal, maybe. Larkin was a great poet but unfortunately a neurotic drunk.

The reason the early '60's changed things is because of Betty Friedan and the Civil Rights thing. That's why so many oddities in popular culture, including westerns. That early level stuff doesn't really bother me. But my awareness of popular culture took a nose dive in the 1970's and has never really bounced back.

It's a relief when you realize you don't really have to know who any of these people are. Rihanna? Who dat?

"Oh, and three Jews from Brooklyn invented gangsta rap."

Hip Hop was invented by African American and Puerto Rican DJs in underground night clubs and house parties in the ghettos of The Bronx and Brooklyn in the late 1970s while WASPs, Irish, Italians, and Jews in New York City were still listening to disco and new wave.

They said gangsta rap specifically, not hip-hop. And people of color listened to disco, too.

    http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/279882-obama-opens-new-culture-war-with-transgender-rights-fight

President Obama is opening a new front in the culture wars over gay and transgender rights — just in time for the 2016 elections.

Guidance from the Departments of Justice and Education that public schools should allow transgender students to use bathrooms that match their gender identity, and a separate civil rights lawsuit against a North Carolina transgender law, firmly put the White House and the Democratic party at the forefront of transgender rights.

The two dramatic moves provoked cries of support from the left and fury from the right, which decried the actions as further examples of executive overreach and social engineering they see as typical of Obama’s rule.

Oh, and three Jews from Brooklyn invented gangsta rap.

I think you’re confusing this with Woodstock, which was staged by two Jews from Brooklyn.

  151. @Jefferson

What’s old is new! At least in Roxbury:

    http://www.bostonherald.com/news/local_coverage/2016/05/public_tiring_of_bike_gangs

Notice that even the center-right Herald wouldn’t print BLACK bike gangs.

Duh, because after he was re-elected, the gloves came off and he became emboldened to act in concert with his ideological views without fear of political repercussions. With a GOP majority in both houses of Congress now, he has nothing to lose by letting his freak flag fly. Some “legacy”.

  154. @Almost Missouri
Wait, but on Steve's graph, "racism" alone has about 1.47%. The total for all terms must be more like 4% or 5%.

Right, I meant for “inequality” alone. I didn’t write that properly.
