I was walking down Ventura Blvd. a few days ago, when I saw a wiry Latino man lying in the driveway leading to the big parking garage. I went over and told him to get up, somebody was going to to make a quick turn into the driveway and crush his skull like a ripe melon, and that wasn’t fair to the poor driver. He opened his mouth and a big cloud of marijuana smoke came out. He sat up, then rolled over and went back to sleep with his head in the driveway.

So I got out my phone and called 911. I stood there blocking the driveway for about 3 minutes until a fire department ambulance pulled up to deal with him and then I went on my way.

That got me thinking about the Kitty Genovese story.

When I was growing up in the 1960s and 1970s, one of the most famous Moral Lessons of Our Time was the 1964 murder of Kitty Genovese. It came up all the time in editorials, sermons, graduation speeches, and other forms of upbraiding uplift: All Americans were guilty of apathy, of not wanting to get involved.

The one thing the murder of Kitty Genovese didn’t have much to do with in the respectable discourse of the time was crime. Or if it did, it was proof that Society’s Apathy was preventing us from dealing with the Root Causes of Crime, such as poverty.

The official lesson that respectable, law-abiding citizens were to blame for the woman’s murder was driven home by the famous first sentence of the New York Times article about

“For more than half an hour thirty-eight respectable, law-abiding citizens in Queens watched a killer stalk and stab a woman in three separate attacks in Kew Gardens.”

That turns out to have been quite exaggerated, although still true to some extent.

There really often is a “bystander effect” in which individual witnesses assume that somebody else will get around to calling the cops.

For example, I can recall a fireman coming to visit St. Francis de Sales in the late 1960s to talk about Fire Safety. He told us about a lumberyard that a thousand people watched burn to the ground over two hours but nobody called the fire department because everyone assumed somebody else in the big crowd had.

I took that lesson to heart.

But the fireman’s story about the lumberyard was memorable because it was kind of funny, while the Kitty Genovese parable was usually presented in a morally bullying Sixties fashion about What’s Wrong With Society. That’s why Kitty Genovese is in all the Social Psychology textbooks — not to remind you to call 911 if you hear something suspicious, but because it’s part of the narrative of American Society’s Guilt.

But the more I think about the Kitty Genovese story, the more I think it reflects the kind of distractionary tactics we’ve should have become familiar with since then. The story was pushed hard by NYT editor A.M. Rosenthal, who was kind of a genius and kind of not quite right in the head. (Nicholas Lemann’s article in The New Yorker about Rosenthal’s role in framing the story describes his writing as “wildly emotional,” which I too noticed back in the day.)

There really were big, frightening changes going on in American society in 1964, and the Kitty Genovese case was reflective of them, but they weren’t ones that we were supposed to talk about. So we all ended up talking obediently about Apathy.

Looking back, Kitty Genovese’s murder seems reflective of two big 1960s changes, just not the ones we were supposed to notice:

1960s image of mugger (a great Baloo cartoon)

First, I had never heard until very recently that the murderer, Winston Moseley, was black. A historic black crime wave was washing over New York City in 1964, but the race of the confessed killer wasn’t mentioned in the famous NYT article. In fact, I don’t recall the killer’s race ever being mentioned in the 1960s/1970s. As a child, I just assumed he looked like all the muggers in cartoons then. I can see now that mentioning that the killer was black would have been distracting from the political lessons White America was supposed to be drawing at the climax of the Civil Rights era.

As feminist Susan Brownmiller pointed out in the 1970s, sex crimes tended to have political connotations. The big increase in black-on-white sex crimes in New York City, Brownmiller suggested, wasn’t unrelated to the black liberation and black power ideology. (Brownmiller called out the Left’s celebration of books by Franz Fanon and boastful rapist Eldridge Cleaver as indicative.) But that’s complicated and distasteful, so let talk about Apathy.

As D. K. points out in the comments, the New York Times article and Rosenthal’s subsequent book didn’t mention that the murder started out as an attempted rape. I would guess that there were multiple reasons for this, but likely there’s nothing more sensitive for liberals than black men raping white women, since it seems to be a side effect of black liberation (e.g., Reconstruction, the 1960s, and South Africa in the Mandela Era).

Second, Moseley was a serial killer avant la lettre, a sex maniac who confessed to murdering two other women for thrills. He wasn’t just some complete loser: he had a white collar job, a wife, two kids, a mortgage, and a 3 digit IQ. He was just evil. The jury gave him the death penalty, but an appeals court let him off with life, at which point he escaped from prison and kidnapped and raped another woman before being recaptured. Moseley’s still in prison and every two years tries out a new theory on the parole board about why, if you stop and think, he’s the real victim.

But, as Bill James’ recent book, Popular Crime, noted, the concept of “serial killer” didn’t really exist yet, so there wasn’t a conceptual nook for Moseley. Moreover, although there had been what we’d think of as serial killers in the past, they appear, if James can be trusted on this subject, to have grown enormously in numbers in the 1960s and the 1970s, the objective correlative of the madness of the times.

Now that I think about it, I’m struck that I never noticed Moseley’s story before because it’s so familiar. He sounds like he was made up by irate Silent Majority callers to talk radio complaining about liberal judges. Of course, the callers probably were referring to Moseley. His further adventures were covered in the newspapers, but Moseley didn’t become part of The Narrative of the era. The Narrative is controlled in the retelling of the story.

  1. Well, I can speak to the apathy question. In 2011, I had a street fight with two teenagers right in front of a crowded wine bar on a yuppy SF boulevard, and nobody made a move to call the cops until it looked like it might spill into the store. Luckily I’d been working out a lot, and managed to prevail. ‘Course, theyvwere white.

  2. Do you feel any guilt over saving that life, Mr. Sailer?

On a side note, recall the story from a few years ago about the crowd in Seattle that yelled "Jump, jump, jump" at the gal on the ledge.

    http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=117255

    Another feel-good story in America.
  4. I stepped in a few times when I was younger and nobody else was doing so. Once, in broad daylight on a busy street, I came across an Indian having rum fits on the sidewalk. He was frothing at the mouth and in very bad shape. Everyone else was ignoring him, so I called an ambulance and waited until they showed up.

Another time I broke up a mugging wherein a skinny white guy was getting his ass kicked by a short but heavily built black. The black walked away claiming he “didn’t do nuthin’,” and the white ran off at high speed.

What I’ve come to realize is that I did these things because I had a sense of ownership of my city that most people don’t share. In another town, I wouldn’t have interceded. But I grew up in the city, walking the streets with my grandparents there as a child after going to mass, so when I saw something wrong, I felt it was my place to do something about it.

But cities change, and as friends and family are replaced by strangers, that sense of ownership goes away even for those of us who grew up in them. These changes that happened in NY in the 60s probably happened in the 20s, the 1890s, 1840s and so on back to the beginning. A change is happening right now, more strangers are coming in, people are being pushed out, communities are being redefined and destroyed.

If an East Indian or Chinese software worker saw me being beaten on the streets of Seattle or San Francisco, would he intervene? Would he even bother to call the cops? I doubt it. There is no place for real, on the ground community in cities today, unless you are at the top of the heap. It’s by design.

This Asian Indian guy would. I don't wish whites ill, and I think very few Indians do.

I doubt it too. Diversity destroys communities, sharing and trust. I believe the term is called BOWLING ALONE.

"But cities change and as friends and family are replaced by strangers that sense of ownership goes away even for those who grew up in them."

You have described my neighborhood and feelings precisely. I have lived in the same home for 51 years and what was once a 100% white neighborhood that was perfectly safe and friendly is now anything but. I know longer feel any connection to the park I played in around the corner, the baseball diamond, the local stores and i have no ties at all to the black, brown and yellow people I see everywhere around me.

  8. The Wikipedia page about her murder is very actively edited. Now and then in the past there were attempts to add text describing the race of her killer — eg because she or her family was described as “Italian American”, it was fair to add that her killer was African American. Here you can see some back and forth about that in late 2012. Of course such edits were typically very quickly removed by Wikipedia’s PC enforcers (the vast majority of whom are white males).

Now the page contains a booking foto of her killer. So all of that is largely moot. But it was fun while it lasted.

I’ve noticed that the savvier filmmakers try to square the circle (realism vs. sensitivity) by casting two muggers as an interracial crime team, one white and one black.

I'd love to see such a compilation. I was amused how in Collateral, the excellent Tom Cruise/Michael Mann movie, the assassin played by Cruise and his black driver (Jamie Foxx) were at one point attacked by a white, blond Los Angeles street gang.

Before the 1970s or late 1960s, weren't pretty much all the muggers and villains depicted as white as well? There may have been some exceptions such as Fu Man Chu, but I think the Hays Code probably limited negative portrayals of blacks and non-whites in the interest of discouraging riots and lynchings or just in the name of general decency. Many period portrayals of blacks are considered negative today (minstrel-style performances, Br'er Rabbit, and some of the Warner Brothers cartoons), but that's because they often caricaturize blacks for white amusement, not because they're shown as villains or as anyone to be afraid of. It was only in the Blaxploitation era of the '70s when they started to be shown seducing white women (Shaft), as pimps (Superfly), or as evil villains (Live and Let Die). Of course, they also started to be shown in more positive, non-servile roles at that time as well.

I agree that it's pretty transparent why so many of the burglars and criminals on TV are white, especially in commercials. South Park even had a gag about it. There was previously at least some serious media attention directed at black criminals though. Gang leader Nicky Barnes on the cover of a 1977 issue of the New York Times Magazine for example. Of course, he was more than just a petty criminal and I think some accounts try and justify his extreme violence (mostly at the expense of other black people) by explaining that he witnessed a family member being killed by the Klan back in South Carolina. But maybe I'm confusing him with someone else, because Wikipedia says he was born in Harlem.

  14. Many years ago, I got Abe’s 1964 book on the murder and the trial– things moved more quickly, back in the day!– and read it a couple of times, thinking that I might want to write a screenplay based on the case, which was much written about in my Social Psychology text books.

When the fortieth anniversary rolled around, I read an article about the killing, which was described as a sexual assault and murder. I wrote an e-mail to correct the reporter, who never replied. It turned out, however, that the story was right; I was the one who was wrong.

I went back and double checked, and, sure enough, Abe’s book simply never bothered to mention that Mr. Moseley had unsuccessfully attempted to rape Miss Genovese, before stabbing her again, and leaving her for dead, on the interior stairway where he had hunted her down, after having once retreated to his car, because a neighbor had yelled at him to stop, during the initial assault.

Abe also overlooked the fact that Miss Genovese’s girlfriend was sleeping in their bed, at the time of the attack, unaware that her lover was being slaughtered, several yards away. Again, it was at least forty years later when I learned that, when the girlfriend spoke out publicly for the first time.

The crux of the story is true, however: Abe got onto the story, after it initially had passed as a run-of-the-mill local murder, because a high-ranking police officer had told him, over lunch, how mystified and disgusted he was by the reactions of the neighbors, stating that he had never seen anything like it in his decades on the force.

One man who had realized what was happening had grabbed a baseball bat, intending to go out and confront the attacker; he thought better of such a move, however, and decided to go back to bed, instead– without even calling the police first! Another man opened his door, due to the commotion on the stairway, saw Moseley attacking Genovese with a knife, and slammed the door shut, leaving her to her fate.

The police arrived within minutes of their belatedly getting the call– which was made after Moseley had left the scene for good, by a neighbor who had literally left his own apartment through his window, gone into a neighboring apartment, and called a friend, from there, to ask advice about whether or not the police should be called!

If anyone had called when Kitty Genovese had awakened her neighbors, during Winston Moseley’s first knife attack, her life might well have been saved. Had he not spontaneously confessed to the killing, and two others, after being arrested for stealing someone’s television, in broad daylight, who knows how many victims he might have racked up, before being caught?

As it is, Winston Moseley is still alive, more than half a century later, in a New York prison, having once escaped, raping a woman and holding her hostage. As the late Warren Zevon might have explained it all away: “Well, he’s just an excitable boy!”

As Winston Moseley himself explained it, to the Parole Board, it is actually worse for someone like him than for his victim; for her, it is all over quickly and permanently, while he has had to deal with the consequences ever since. During one of his parole hearings, he told his interlocutors that he should be set free, because he had apologized to the Genovese family [N.B. small “f”] for the “inconvenience” he had caused them!

Kitty Genovese was murdered in the wee-small hours of March 13, 1964– a Friday. Her youngest brother, set adrift by the tragedy, joined the Army, a few years later, and went off to Vietnam. On the anniversary of her death, a landmine blew off both of his legs. It was March 13, 1970– a Friday.

While in custody, Moseley confessed to killing Genovese. He detailed the attack, corroborating the physical evidence at the scene. His motive for the attack was simply "to kill a woman". Moseley said [sic] preferred to kill women because: "they were easier and didn't fight back". Moseley stated that he got up that night around 2:00 a.m., leaving his wife asleep at home, and drove around to find a victim. He spied Genovese and followed her to the parking lot.[24] He also confessed to murdering and sexually assaulting two other women and to committing "30 to 40" burglaries.[23] Subsequent psychiatric examinations suggested that Moseley was a necrophile.[25][26]

Moseley's trial began on June 8, 1964 and was presided over by Judge J. Irwin Shapiro. Moseley initially pleaded "not guilty", but his attorney later changed Moseley's plea to "not guilty by reason of insanity".[27] On Thursday, June 11, Moseley's attorney called him to testify in hopes that Moseley's testimony would convince the jury that he was "a schizophrenic personality and legally insane". During his testimony, Moseley described the events on the night he murdered Genovese, along with the two other murders to which he had confessed and numerous other burglaries and rapes. The jury deliberated for seven hours before returning a guilty verdict on June 11 at around 10:30 p.m.[21]

    ***

My own recollection, whether from the Rosenthal book or otherwise, is that Mr. Moseley explicitly stated, perhaps during his trial testimony itself, that he went out that night specifically hunting for a White woman to kill. His first victim had been a Black girl, just 15 or 16 years old, whom he had shot dead, rather than stabbed to death, in the summer of 1963. The death of the second victim remains unclear to me: the police already had someone in custody, whom they were convinced was the killer; they believed that Mr. Moseley was falsely confessing, either for the benefit of the man in custody, whom he might have known, or else simply to exaggerate his own prowess. It was never obvious to me, from my readings on the case, several years ago, what the truth of the matter was, in regard to that supposed second killing by Winston Moseley.

  20. I am surprised to learn that Kitty Genovese was a lesbian (I am not surprised to learn that her death was a ‘sexual assault gone wrong’).

For the curious: her at-the-time partner’s name is apparently Mary Ann Zielonko.

Perhaps a more current foto of her.

I say perhaps because I cannot be really sure; but there appears to be a resemblance.

I’d love to see such a compilation. I was amused how in Collateral, the excellent Tom Cruise/Michael Mann movie, the assassin played by Cruise and his black driver (Jamie Foxx) were at one point attacked by a white, blond Los Angeles street gang.

Yeah, Collateral was a good movie, and Cruise was excellent. But almost everything Michael Mann has done is worth watching. See Manhunter (the original Hannibal Lector movie) and Heat with DeNiro and Pacino.

Interesting. I didn't know she was a Lesbian, but then, i didn't know her killer was black either. How will Jewish cultural Marxism spin this? Being a lesbian, she could have been the victim of a hate crime, but she was also white and her killer is black, so we know that can't be so, since whites can't be the victim of hate crimes and blacks can't be the perpetrators.
  25. The story “everybody knows” about Kitty Genovese is that dozens of people saw or heard her being raped and murdered, and did nothing. Nobody even called the police.

In reality, there were dozens of people who saw or heard SOMETHING that night, and some of them DID take some action.

Remember that the attack took place at 3 AM! Very few people nearby were awake. A few dozen were awoken by screams. Some of them didn’t hear anything else afterward, and went back to sleep. Some looked out their windows, saw nothing, and went back to sleep.

One looked out his window, saw Mosley attacking Genovese, yelled, “Leave her alone,” and saw him run away. She got up on her own, and walked away, SEEMINGLY unharmed. Some people who witnessed this thought a mugging had just been averted, and went back to bed.

A few DID call the police (which wasn’t easy in those days- 911 service didn’t exist yet). They told the police what they’d seen: a man attacked a woman. Someone shouted at him, and he ran away, She got up and walked away. No, she didn’t look injured…

In reality, Genovese had been stabbed and was hurt very badly. Worse yet, Mosley was still close by. But as far as onlookers knew, the incident was over. So, no one knew that the police and an ambulance were desperately needed.

    • Replies: @Jus' Sayin'...
Astoria has it exactly right. The original NYT story was a typical Duranty-style production of that lying rag. A few years ago someone went back and re-investigated the whole thing. His findings were as Astoria describes: A few people were awakened at 3 AM, heard ambiguous noises or briefly observed an ambiguous encounter and went back to sleep. A few called the police but most did not bother. This was not necessarily from apathy but more likely from a reasonable expectation of how indifferent the police respobnse would be. Most, finding themselves in a similar situation would react in the same way. As YouTube repeatedly demonstrates, a lot of us would act a lot worse.
  26. The “apathy” at the Genovese incident was even less than you think. If you look deeper, the NY Times article as almost a complete concoction. It tries to conjure some sort of “arena” for viewing, where everybody knew what was going on. But the killing moved locations three times, the noises were sporadic and cryptic, and multiple people called the police or investigated and yelled out.

It was an example of taking a barbaric, predatory crime and spinning it around to “aren’t we all the real criminals here?”

  27. Bystander intervention training is all the rage in the military’s sexual assault prevention program. To my knowledge, no one has been court-martialed for failing to intervene when a soldier buys another soldier a drink at a bar.

  28. Nicholas Lemann… you know, that reminds me of something. Ever wondered what the Harvard Crimson thought about what happened in Cambodia in the ’70s?

Lemann also wrote an article about Patrick Chavis for the New York Times Magazine. A particularly unfortunate piece of the Narrative, but it never blew up in their faces like it should have. Then again, neither did the Khmer Rouge.

The Crimson’s archives are all online. There must be all sorts of fun stuff in there.

  29. […] Steve Sailer reminds his readers that Kitty Genovese (who I presume was Italian-American) was murdered by a black man. But this was never mentioned in the NY Times; even fifty years ago, the mainstream media was on a mission to not write anything that could cause people to have racist thoughts. […]

  30. Why stop Darwinism in action?

  31. anonymous • Disclaimer says:

A person has to be careful about intervening as they could get themselves killed. Some years back a violent mugging suddenly took place near me in the downtown Chicago area. A black male was punching out a white woman for her purse, knocking her down while she was screaming. I moved in on him and as I got close he pulled out a gun and stuck it in my face from about a foot away. I was forced to back off a bit, letting him get away. The police response was surprisingly tepid; only one older policeman showed up and he drove us around the area a couple times to look for him in a way that seemed as if we were just going through the motions. There was a public event that day so most of the cops were probably off doing crowd control. People have gotten killed trying to be good samaritans. If it’s a domestic then forget about it; they picked each other and have a symbiotic relationship. Both might turn on the do-gooder.

Kitty kept her private life under wraps. People who knew her as a neighbour may have suspected it was a dispute with a black boyfriend and intervening might well get them into a physical confrontation; one in which she would start screaming at them , he would batter them to a pulp, and then the cops and newspapers would peg it as a case of an interfering racist bully.

“Neighbor neighbor don’t you worry how I treat my wife

The people in charge control all of the high ground and that lets them define the culture in big ways, but also in a million little small ways too. The cumulative effect is we all end up accepting the framing of every issues, large and small, as well as the limits of what can be discussed.

I’ve bumped into this when talking with my office manager. She’s deeply committed to the cult of modern liberalism. She is one of those women who got her hair done like Hillary in the 1990’s and now sports granny glasses like Elizabeth Warren. If I mention something that is not supposed to be noticed, her eyes start darting around, like the fight or flight response has kicked in. The fear of noticing is very strong with the committed.

However I never heard in school that the killer had not only been identified, but gone to trial and been convicted within a few months of the crime. Nor did I hear it in the various editorial that have used the story for their own ends. The fact that the same murderer escaped prison and raped and murdered others was also not mentioned.

Sorry, I can’t supply a URL, but the racial aspect was honestly dealt with in this article. For example, when Moseley escaped from jail (see Wikipedia article), he admitted that his motivation was to kill and rape a white woman. According to this article. His lawyers were all Jewish liberals. I took a class under one, one of the most repulsive creatures I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. She openly and unashamedly favored leftists in class.

One of the things I remember about the NY Mag article is that her neighbors were used to being woken up by her. She kept late hours & came home drunk often. So they were just being tolerant of her eccentricities. I suspect that since she was a tough lesbian they also didn’t want to provoke trouble.

    That was part of it.

    http://www.nyjournalofbooks.com/book-review/gray-lady-down-what-decline-and-fall-new-york-times-means-america

A drastic change in policy toward gays came when Rosenthal’s successor, Max Frankel, took over. Rosenthal had banned the word “Gay” which he had considered overtly political.

According to Michelangelo Signorile, a gay columnist, the Times newsroom was extremely inhospitable to gay men and women.

“Those who were suspected of being gay often suffered in their careers, sent to unimportant dead-end bureaus and desks or even recalled from foreign postings if word their sexual orientation leaked out,” McGowan wrote.

“This ban held back the social movement and Rosenthal’s homophobia also left gays immensely frightened and frustrated,” according to McGowan’s account of Signorile’s assessment.

Frankel is quoted as saying, “I knew they’d (Gays) had a hard time, and I knew they weren’t comfortable identifying themselves as gay. But I never dreamed that so many homosexuals were hiding in newsroom closets, awaiting the trumpet call.”

The above selective review of McGowan's book leaves out Rosenthal's concern was that the gays would, if allowed to be out the closet, be able to very quickly wink wink nudge nudge "network", organize for "protected status" and then essentially take over the editorial boards and newsrooms. They then would subvert the very definition of journalism towards pushing the "gay agenda" at the cost of any objective standard. Turns out Rosenthal was right. The NYT, New Republic and a number of other left wing publications and medial outlets(think Nick Denton at Gawker) are essentially run by a hostile elite of Jewish Gays who despise Goyim breeders.

Jew trump Goyim, Gay trump Straight, Trannie trump Cis, Gay Jew Trannie trumps them all.

This is what happens when Gays become a protected class in any organization.

Same problem with the Catholic clergy will, the way things are going under Pope Francis, bring the church to its knees. Hopefully the US Military can save itself from gay networking.

Remember, It's not the "Gay", It's the Marxism.

This kind of gives you an idea of how Rosenthal felt about his homosexual staffers being Gay activists.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._M._Rosenthal#Editorial_policy_and_political_views

Columnist Wesley Pruden said this about Rosenthal's editorial policy:

Like all good editors, Abe was both loved and loathed, the former by those who met his standards, the latter mostly by those who couldn't keep the pace he set as City Editor, Managing Editor and finally Executive Editor. He brooked no challenges to his authority. He once told a reporter who demanded to exercise his rights by marching in a street demonstration he was assigned to cover: "OK, the rule is, you can [make love to] an elephant if you want to, but if you do you can't cover the circus." We call that "the Rosenthal rule."

    also this:

A.M. Rosenthal died in Manhattan on May 10, 2006, eight days after his 84th birthday. He is interred in Westchester Hills Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. His epitaph inscribed on his grave marker is: "He kept the paper straight." and was chosen to memorialize his efforts at the New York Times to deliver unbiased news.

That is bullshit! Kitty Genovese was a well-brought-up young woman from a large, close-knit, middle-class family, which years before had moved to the Connecticut suburbs. It was against her parents' wishes that she had stayed behind in Queens. She lived in a respectable, middle-class (and largely Jewish) neighborhood in Kew Gardens, right next to the Long Island Rail Road station, where she (illegally) parked her sports car. She worked as a night manager at a Queens bar-- which is why she was arriving home so late. She was no more a "tough lesbian" nor an habitual "drunk" than Elizabeth Short ("The Black Dahlia") had been a prostitute and a porn actress! Kitty Genovese was very discreet about her private life-- which is why it took several decades for it to become public knowledge that she had been a lesbian, let alone one who had spent that last year of her life living with her lesbian lover.

The slurs against Kitty Genovese's character were the result of some of her neighbors' blaming her for the public opprobrium that they suffered, as a result of the massive publicity about their alleged apathy. Almost none of the neighbors who were awakened by her screams that night even knew that it was Kitty Genovese who was being attacked-- among those who even knew her at all-- let alone assumed that she was merely in a drunken row with a lover.

One of the things that was strikingly obvious to me, in reading Abe Rosenthal's book, was that Kitty Genovese, as an individual, did not move or motivate him at all. She was merely being used by him as a device to analyze modern American society, in general, and New York City, in particular. I got no sense that he either identified with her, as a fellow human being, or felt any particular sympathy for her plight, as an individual. He merely had a sociological point that he wished to illustrate.

I'm not sure there was a wave of serial killers, as that seems to be baked in as bad DNA evil mutational behavior fairly constant. There was an episode of History Detectives, on PBS, featuring two Black hosts (one a woman, the other a man) and dweeby White guy, searching for evidence of Austin's first serial killer (recorded) who preyed mostly on Black servants in the post-Civil War era; and two married White women.

Turns out, surprise surprise, it was a Black guy. Who was not right in the head, suspected at the time, and shot dead in a confrontation with the police.

Popular culture has criminals and thugs as White guys, Blacks as innocent victims. It stands out when Blacks are portrayed as violent criminals: a few episodes of Person of Interest, some of the Blacklist, etc. Pretty standard though for the serial killer and criminal to always be White.

That sort of denial is new. You can read old Dashiell Hammett short stories featuring the Continental Op, written purely for money to entertain people reading the pulp magazine Black Mask which published most of them. Filipinos are excitable, not very bright; Blacks thuggish and dangerous, hard to put down; Irish guys tough and stubborn and strong; Chinese criminals dangerous because they think. Its a PC thought crime every story, no wonder he's in very bad odor by the Marxists and Leftists today. You can read much the same ten-twenty years later in Raymond Chandler novels. You can even read it in the 1970s comic capers like Donald E. Westlake's "Dancing Aztecs" which has a hilarious depiction of the lack of speech capacity of two low level stoop dwellers observing a very fat Black woman in a parade. "Loo dah." "Whare?" "Dah."

Westlake is also on the bad person list by the Leftists and Marxists.

Things changed IMHO in the 1960s as you say, when people could not speak about the reality of Black crime because of undermining Civil Rights aka the War on Other White people by the NYC/Harvard/Yale/Princeton/Stanford elite.

Yes and Dashiell Hammett was one of the major public leftists of his time while portraying blacks “realistically” in his fiction.

"In the 1976 version of “Assault on Precinct 13,” the gang assaulting the station is pictured as interracial."

I just saw that movie, for the first time, like three nights ago. Its a little difficult to say for certain (especially in the way the gang members are presented in a sort of proto-zombie movie fashion, with virtually no dialogue among them), but I got the impression that it was more of a weird, ad hoc alliance between Black, White and Mexican criminal gangs. In fairness, Whites still comprised a statistically significant percentage of street criminals, back in the 1970s. So it WAS unrealisitc, but not "Death Wish 3"-level unrealistic. Most of the criminals were Blacks & Mexicans.
    , @Sean
The Warriors (1979) were mixed black and white. The cleverest way race is used is in the original Death Wish where the actual attackers of the hero's family are 3 whites but as the film goes on he increasingly is shooting young black muggers, which is apparently meant to show his descent into depravity.
  46. Donald Westlake wrote a wonderful comic novel, Up Your Banners, in the late 1960s that was dedicated “To David Susskind if he ever finds it.” It’s about an interracial romance between a white bread pale penis person and a street smart but educated black school teacher.

My tattered paperback copy has a blurb about “Soon to be a major motion picture” but clearly the tides of political correctness washed away any hope of this story ever making the big screen.

It’s a love story that ends well (it is a comedy) with the two principals falling in love and turning their backs on the ginned up controversy that brought them together as adversaries. They walk away from the “larger” issues to which they are expected to sacrifice their personal happiness. It’s a refreshingly libertarian message. The male character (Oliver but self nicknamed Matt) overcomes Leona’s reluctance to “desert” by telling her that “desertion isn’t a moral issue for conscripts.” That was a Vietnam era reflex I guess, and a better line might well have been “escape isn’t a moral issue for hostages.”

If I were teaching at any level it would be required reading just to watch heads spins as they tried to wrap their propagandized and closed little minds around the percipient message by this “minor” writer of crime caper novels nearly a half century ago.

There’s more wisdom and insight in this lost and forgotten book than the sum total of stultifying formulaic and utterly predictable bloviations of the high minded leftist and racial grievance industry.

Look for it, it will make you laugh, make you smile, and then leave you shaking your head at how clearly some people saw the train wreck while it was just a gleam in the eye of the social justice crowd.

    • Replies: @Anonymous
Steven, glad you liked it (rereading it now), but boy did you miss the point. You're just contributing to the problem here. Westlake shows a lot of respect for people who work for social justice, and to better their communities. He just wants people to see each other as individuals first, members of groups second. And your response to this is to write off a whole section of humanity as too stupid to be worth listening to? You've got no business accusing anyone else of 'bloviating'--what do you think you're doing, apparently on a very regular basis?

And how the hell you got the idea Donald Westlake is considered a 'minor' writer is beyond me. He may not have won a Nobel Prize or anything, and it's true a lot of people think of him as the comic caper guy, but maybe you heard of a little book called "The Ax"? Got made into a movie by Costa Gavras. A better indictment of the way corporate culture (something he hated with all his soul) forces people down to the lowest moral common denominator, nobody ever wrote. And before you assume he's a fellow Libertarian, maybe you should try reading a book called "Anarchaos"--about a planet where government doesn't exist, and the corporations hold all the power. I wouldn't call him a leftist, he sure as hell wasn't PC, but he wasn't one of yours, either. He laughed at all of us.

This book deserves more readers, but it's not in any specific genre, and is hard to market.

The movie didn't get made, according to Westlake himself, for the reason most of his books sold to Hollywood never got made. Development hell. Political correctness had nothing to do with it. Geez, Bill Cosby was going to star in a movie based on another of his books--and the character in that book was not black. In retrospect, maybe just as well that one didn't happen either.
  47. The craziness seems to have started only when, to quote Wikipedia,

On June 1, 1967, the New York Court of Appeals found that Moseley should have been able to argue that he was “medically insane” at the sentencing hearing when the trial court found that he had been legally sane, and the initial death sentence was reduced to an indeterminate sentence/lifetime imprisonment

Before the 1970s or late 1960s, weren’t pretty much all the muggers and villains depicted as white as well? There may have been some exceptions such as Fu Man Chu, but I think the Hays Code probably limited negative portrayals of blacks and non-whites in the interest of discouraging riots and lynchings or just in the name of general decency. Many period portrayals of blacks are considered negative today (minstrel-style performances, Br’er Rabbit, and some of the Warner Brothers cartoons), but that’s because they often caricaturize blacks for white amusement, not because they’re shown as villains or as anyone to be afraid of. It was only in the Blaxploitation era of the ’70s when they started to be shown seducing white women (Shaft), as pimps (Superfly), or as evil villains (Live and Let Die). Of course, they also started to be shown in more positive, non-servile roles at that time as well.

I agree that it’s pretty transparent why so many of the burglars and criminals on TV are white, especially in commercials. But maybe I’m confusing him with someone else, because Wikipedia says he was born in Harlem.

Example: last June Maggie Daniels, a school teacher in NC, was assaulted and murdered by a minority. It only started to gain national attention around August 9. Unfortunately, something happened that day in a small town called Ferguson so poor Maggie was dispatched down the memory hole. Priorities after all and Ferguson was too big a story to ignore.

Well, Steve, that admirable act on your part is quite the Good Samaritan. Very commendable.

One thing: With the advent of cell phones, wouldn’t the opposite now occur? In other words, if a large crowd of people were to hear or witness a heinous crime or even a raging fire burning out of control, most of the crowd WOULD in fact use their phones to call 911? Since most people carry cell phones it would tend to be even easier to call 911 without even thinking about it.

After taking a photo of it and putting it on Facebook first of course. Priorities, after all.

  51. But, as Bill James’ recent book, Popular Crime, noted, the concept of “serial killer” didn’t really exist yet, so there wasn’t a conceptual nook for Moseley yet.

It is hard to have serial killers when the killer is executed for the first murder.

  52. Two points:

    – I think you are vastly over rating how much anyone in LA would care if they ran someone over.

    – Serial killers are profiled as white males. This has been true for those caught. Advances in DNA testing and its widespread use are resulting in black males with multi decade killing sprees getting caught.
This has been puzzling me but I believe I have worked it out: white serial killers have a different internal moral architecture and WANT to get caught. Every serial killer of any fame has usually taunted the police with notes or killing in a way that vast attention is paid to the crime. What is different with the black killings starting to emerge is that they clearly have zero interest in getting caught. There is no inner voice saying “what you are doing is wrong”. Black serial killers seem to kill those who no one is surprised to see die violently.
White serial killers have a propensity for grand gestures – pentagrams daubed on the body etc – which is like a neon sign that the crime is out of the ordinary. They also frequently attack people who no one expects to die a violent death – the pretty young receptionist, the college student.
In the coming decades I think we are going to see (at least inside law enforcement) an understanding that black serial killing – like all other violent crimes – is a field dominated by black males. White serial killers are basically the hipsters of the serial killing world: “look at me, I made the ink for my pentagram from the ink of the rarest squid on earth! Lets see if the police can work it out!”.
While not evidence, places where black culture is the dominant force have murderers that commit serial killings without blinking an eye. Killing is routine in vast parts of Africa with little fear of law enforcement. Dominant people in communities kill people that displease them as a routine event. It is clear that the behavior and culture from Africa were imported here along with slaves and it seems incredible that this feature of society somehow managed not to be transmitted.

  54. Though I never specifically studied the crime, I, too, didn’t learn that Genovese’s killer was black (or learn his name, from which I would deduce that he was black) until a few years ago.

No, the term "serial killer" wasn't really in use until about 1970. The police resisted the concept until late in the 1970s, according to Bill James.

  55. iSteve bait. Re: Stanley Fischer and the Federal Reserve and Jews.

Central Bank head Janet Yellen, a Jewish woman from Yale, is worried there’s too little “diversity in econ”. Meaning, of course, too many white men. Meaning, of course not, too many Yale Jews.

Whereas Jewish women from Yale like Janet Yellen are distributed evenly along the ideological spectrum.

The black walked away claiming he "didn't do nuthin'," and the white ran off at high speed.

What I've come to realize is that I did these things because I had a sense of ownership of my city that most people don't share. In another town, I wouldn't have interceded.

It's by design.

“If an East Indian or Chinese software worker saw me being beaten on the streets of Seattle or San Francisco, would he intervene? Would he even bother to call the cops?”

This Asian Indian guy would. I don’t wish whites ill, and I think very few Indians do.

  57. Not to go off on a tangent, but you touch on a very interesting subject in the penultimate paragraph.

There was a massive increase in serial killers in the 1970s. In California, bodies were being found near highways. Police thought it was the work of a serial killer when in fact it was the work of 4 serial killers working independently. In the very good documentary The Killing of America there is a line “The 60s was called the age of sex murder because sex killers appeared every 5 years, but in the 70s they began appearing every 5 weeks”.

Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, the Hillside Stranglers, David Berkowitz, the Yorkshire Ripper, Dennis Nilsen, Harold Shipman, Dennis Rader, Rodney Alcala, Andrei Chikatilo, Richard Chase, Dean Corll, Juan Corona, Wayne Williams, Randy Kraft, Randall Woodfield, the Deaths Angels, Carl Watts, and Arthur Shawcross all started their killing sprees in the 70s. This coincides with the acceptance and mass consumption of pornography by mainstream society, although I’m sure other factors also played a part.

"There was a massive increase in serial killers in the 1970's."

This is documented extensively in the book Vigilante by William Tucker. He explains the great increase in "stranger killings" by serial killers as due to a steep decline in the death penalty in the USA.

The above selective review of McGowan’s book leaves out Rosenthal’s concern was that the gays would, if allowed to be out the closet, be able to very quickly wink wink nudge nudge “network”, organize for “protected status” and then essentially take over the editorial boards and newsrooms. They then would subvert the very definition of journalism towards pushing the “gay agenda” at the cost of any objective standard.

Remember, It’s not the “Gay”, It’s the Marxism.

In the 1976 version of "Assault on Precinct 13," the gang assaulting the station is pictured as interracial.

“In the 1976 version of “Assault on Precinct 13,” the gang assaulting the station is pictured as interracial.”

So it WAS unrealisitc, but not “Death Wish 3”-level unrealistic. Most of the criminals were Blacks & Mexicans.

  61. Another reason why none of the witnesses called the police is that most assumed the altercation (of which each one saw or heard only a small part) involved drunks from a nearby bar, which was infamous for attracting loud and often disorderly patrons.

    • Replies: @D. K.
That is true-- although, in reality, that bar, like the one that Kitty Genovese herself worked at as a night manager, had been closed for awhile, by the time that she arrived back at the Long Island Rail Road station, where she parked her car, and then was subsequently overtaken, on the sidewalk, by Winston Moseley, who knifed her in the back, to begin his prolonged, two-part assault.
  62. @astorian
The story "everybody knows" about Kitty Genovese is that dozens of people saw or heard her being raped and murdered, and did nothing. Nobody even called the police.

In reality, there were dozens of people who saw or heard SOMETHING that night, and some of them DID take some action.

Remember that the attack took place at 3 AM! Very few people nearby were awake. A few dozen were awoken by screams. Some of them didn't hear anything else afterward, and went back to sleep. Some looked out their windows, saw nothing, and went back to sleep.

One looked out his window, saw Mosley attacking Genovese, yelled, "Leave her alone," and saw him run away. She got up on her own, and walked away, SEEMINGLY unharmed. Some people who witnessed this thought a mugging had just been averted, and went back to bed.

A few DID call the police (which wasn't easy in those days- 911 service didn't exist yet). They told the police what they'd seen: a man attacked a woman. Someone shouted at him, and he ran away, She got up and walked away. No, she didn't look injured...

In reality, Genovese had been stabbed and was hurt very badly. Worse yet, Mosley was still close by. But as far as onlookers knew, the incident was over. So, no one knew that the police and an ambulance were desperately needed.

  63. while the Kitty Genovese parable was usually presented in a morally bullying Sixties fashion about What’s Wrong With Society

It takes an immense amount of control over the megaphone to pull that one off without people constantly interrupting you with the obvious reply:

“Try the 2nd Amendment, New York. It works for the rest of America.”

There really often is a “bystander effect” in which individual witnesses assume that somebody else will get around to calling the cops.

Yes, though it’s a bit silly to let someone’s life ride on that. E.g., it makes perfect sense that I don’t call the power company when the power goes out in my neighborhood. Someone has always already called them. So, I stopped calling them. And they always get here about an hour after it goes out.

But a woman screaming bloody murder? Why not have everyone call the cops? Heck, outside of spineless blue-state shitholes like Queens, it’s perfectly acceptable, even expected, for people to come outside, gun in hand, and find out WTF all the racket is about.

As a matter of fact, when I was a kid, my dad ran a (black) rapist off of a (black) woman. She’d come down our street screaming in the middle of the day. He was waving a gun around and was probably too high to notice that my dad had a large-caliber derringer cupped in his hand.

So, what does the “unknown black woman who wasn’t raped by an unknown black man because a Southern white man with balls and a gun went out on the street and faced him down” narrative teach us? That Georgia isn’t Queens?

That’s my “narrative” for what Kitty’s murder teaches us. That’s my “teachable moment,” and my “take-home lesson”: you hear screaming. You pick up your firearm and go outside to investigate. You see some P.O.S. stabbing a woman. You put two in his chest and one in his head. Then you call the ambulance for the poor woman he was trying to kill.

    Unless you’re from NYC.

  64. Yes, those psychology classes should also teach people about hindsight bias. It’s clear in hindsight that this was a brutal stranger-assault, but in the heat of the moment, most people would reasonably assume that it was a domestic dispute.

Domestic disputes are extremely common compared to stranger assaults. If you see a man and a woman fighting/screaming in a public place, that’s the natural assumption.

By the way, like most other people here, I was never taught anything about Kitty Genovese’s attacker. Based on peoples’ (alleged) unwillingness to get involved and based on her name, I had always assumed it was “family business,” so to speak.

  65. Interesting to see what the NYPD police commissioner was actually worried about:

Ten days after Genovese was killed, he went downtown to have lunch with New York City’s police commissioner, Michael Murphy. Murphy spent most of the lunch talking about how worried he was that the civil-rights movement, which was at its peak, would set off racial violence in New York, but toward the end Rosenthal asked him about a curious case, then being covered in the tabloids, in which two men had confessed to the same murder.

So, Murphy spent the bulk of the interview talking about the looming threat of Black-inspired racial violence. Rosenthal, on the other hand, was worried about apathy……Perhaps another example of the Jewish obsession with the Holocaust narrative (Good Germans doing nothing while Hitler and his associated do their fell work) intruding into American life?

    • Replies: @D. K.
There is little doubt that the Holocaust narrative was precisely what motivated both Mr. Rosenthal and most of the social psychologists who subsequently turned Kitty Genovese's personal plight, at the hands of a murderous Black sociopath, into a social "syndrome" that supposedly inflicted itself upon modern society-at-large, particularly in densely populated metropolitan areas, and especially in New York City itself. One of the great ironies of that social-scientific formulation, however, was that Kitty Genovese lived and died in a heavily Jewish neighborhood. Both of the men whom I alluded to, in an earlier comment, above, had seemingly Jewish names. I believe that it was one or the other of those two men who literally stated to the police, in explaining his decision not to call them for help: "I didn't want to get involved." Thus, a modern sociological cliche was coined....

    edited for typos

  67. Now the page contains a booking foto of her killer. So all of that is largely moot. But it was fun while it lasted.

Maybe, by way of compromise, the photo should be captioned, “don’t Notice.”

Now we know why ole Abe pounced on the story; it was the exception, not the rule, and he’d found a Great White Defendant. Not just one, but a whole neighborhood!

I wouldn’t intervene (for a stranger) without a gun, in a jurisdiction without laws that protect people for intervening. Calling the cops and going back to bed is what TPTB and the law expect in dumps like Chicago and NYC.

Serial killers are profiled as white males. This has been true for those caught.

The way you write, it’s true of black serial killers that were caught that they were profiled as whites. Is that what you meant to say?

Because that’s probably true. We do know that blacks are serial killers at up to twice their share of the population – at a higher rate than whites.

Not that we can get an accurate picture, what with the gov’t refusing to break “hispanics” out from “whites” in the crime stats.

Advances in DNA testing and its widespread use are resulting in black males with multi decade killing sprees getting caught. This has been puzzling me but I believe I have worked it out: white serial killers have a different internal moral architecture and WANT to get caught.

Ah, I see what you’re getting at. Maybe. I’d put the increased difficulty of catching black serial killers (assuming it exists) down to several other factors, first:

    1. Black crime. There’s a lot of “background noise” in black areas.
    2. Black indifference to violent crime. Blacks are notoriously useless in helping the police solve crimes.
    3. Black disorderliness. It’s harder to find scumbags in a neighborhood where scumbags and their socially marginal victims are normal.
    4. Social indifference. The press and the public don’t like to hear about black crime. Contradicts the narrative. So, there’s less pressure on the police to solve these murders.

  70. Before the 1970s or late 1960s, weren’t pretty much all the muggers and villains depicted as white as well?

I was always led to believe that blacks were portrayed as criminals in the bad old days. But I’ve been watching a lot of classic TV lately and noticed that the overwhelming amount of criminals portrayed were indeed white. If anything old TV shows like Perry Mason rarely depicted blacks at all, and one might get the impression that the US was close to 100 percent white in 1958. One interesting thing I saw was a black actor on the TV show The Untouchables. He was highly mixed, probably more so than Eric Holder, and since the show was shot in black and white, he passed for a white man. And indeed he did play a white character. So even when a rare black was cast in a leading role, he was cast as a white character.

  71. “I agree that it’s pretty transparent why so many of the burglars and criminals on TV are white, especially in commercials. South Park even had a gag about it.”

What do you think is the dominant racial makeup of home burglars in these 2 metropolitan areas ? The vast majority of them are Spanish speakers and Ebonics speakers.

This kind of gives you an idea of how Rosenthal felt about his homosexual staffers being Gay activists.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._M._Rosenthal#Editorial_policy_and_political_views

Columnist Wesley Pruden said this about Rosenthal’s editorial policy:

Like all good editors, Abe was both loved and loathed, the former by those who met his standards, the latter mostly by those who couldn’t keep the pace he set as City Editor, Managing Editor and finally Executive Editor. He brooked no challenges to his authority. He once told a reporter who demanded to exercise his rights by marching in a street demonstration he was assigned to cover: “OK, the rule is, you can [make love to] an elephant if you want to, but if you do you can’t cover the circus.” We call that “the Rosenthal rule.”

    also this:

A.M. Rosenthal died in Manhattan on May 10, 2006, eight days after his 84th birthday. He is interred in Westchester Hills Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. His epitaph inscribed on his grave marker is: “He kept the paper straight.” and was chosen to memorialize his efforts at the New York Times to deliver unbiased news.

I think that just about says it all.

  73. @Daniel H
    From the Wikipedia article:

    >>At the same hearing, Moseley claimed he never intended to kill Genovese and that he considered her murder to be a mugging because "[...] people do kill people when they mug them sometimes." <<

I guess the phrase "robbery gone bad" hadn't been coined yet.

    ***

While in custody, Moseley confessed to killing Genovese. He detailed the attack, corroborating the physical evidence at the scene. His motive for the attack was simply “to kill a woman”. Moseley said [sic] preferred to kill women because: “they were easier and didn’t fight back”. Moseley stated that he got up that night around 2:00 a.m., leaving his wife asleep at home, and drove around to find a victim. He spied Genovese and followed her to the parking lot.[24] He also confessed to murdering and sexually assaulting two other women and to committing “30 to 40” burglaries.[23] Subsequent psychiatric examinations suggested that Moseley was a necrophile.[25][26]

Moseley’s trial began on June 8, 1964 and was presided over by Judge J. Irwin Shapiro. Moseley initially pleaded “not guilty”, but his attorney later changed Moseley’s plea to “not guilty by reason of insanity”.[27] On Thursday, June 11, Moseley’s attorney called him to testify in hopes that Moseley’s testimony would convince the jury that he was “a schizophrenic personality and legally insane”.

  74. Doesn’t this incident predate 911 systems even in NYC? Got to admit that 911 made it a lot easier to react to these things. I recall in the 60s, my mother trying to call the police, having to look up the number or call Information, then getting the wrong police number. Not a satisfactory system.

  75. The 1960 image of a white burglar with a ski cap, striped shirt, and mask that looks more appropriate for a masquerade ball is what you still see today on an ADP home security commercial. This same guy has been breaking into houses for 55 years. He needs to carry a blackjack.

Wasn’t there a rash of movies in the 1950s and 1960s about jewel thieves? Ugly American tourist types traipsing around the South of France in in sports cars wearing black turtlenecks.

  76. @timothy
It would be amusing to have one of those YouTube super-compilations of all the white muggers in movies from the 1970s to the 2000s. Don't walk down the wrong alley in Chicago or else some sort of John Malkovich look-alike might shoot your parents!

I've noticed that the savvier filmmakers try to square the circle (realism vs. sensitivity) by casting two muggers as an interracial crime team, one white and one black.

Hilariously, one of the muggers in Death Wish is played by Jeff Goldblum!

  77. Look at this old timer in action: http://youtu.be/gBYSau64LOc

One moment he’s sitting at a desk typing away and the next he coolly and calmly gets up and engages the would-be robbers.

That’s how you deal with goblins. There are still some sheep dogs among us.

And just look at the rest of the sheep, milling about helplessly and getting in the way of the sheep dog.

Just think about it. How many of you here are willing and able to do the same?

  78. Someone above wrote that this race-perp denial is new.

Hardly. In 1995, Flo King wrote at NR: “Even more far-fetched is the depiction of male criminals as 1930s comic strip “crooks”–burly, tattooed white men in masks and working-class caps who look like Victor McLagen in The Informer or Sluggo in the “Nancy” comic strip.”

The above cartoon pretty much nails it.

  79. @WhatEvvs
There was an article in (I believe) NY Mag about Moseley some time in the mid-90s that was very good. It was the first time I learned of the killer's race, and I was literally raised on the myth of Kitty Genovese and How We Should All Learn From This To Be Good New Yorkers.

Sorry, I can't supply a URL, but the racial aspect was honestly dealt with in this article.

I suspect that since she was a tough lesbian they also didn't want to provoke trouble.

    Horrific tragedy.

Wasn't Rosenthal eventually sh#tcanned from the Times for being insufficiently pro-gay?

“One of the things I remember about the NY Mag article is that her neighbors were used to being woken up by her. She kept late hours & came home drunk often. So they were just being tolerant of her eccentricities. I suspect that since she was a tough lesbian they also didn’t want to provoke trouble.”

That is bullshit! Kitty Genovese was a well-brought-up young woman from a large, close-knit, middle-class family, which years before had moved to the Connecticut suburbs. It was against her parents’ wishes that she had stayed behind in Queens. She lived in a respectable, middle-class (and largely Jewish) neighborhood in Kew Gardens, right next to the Long Island Rail Road station, where she (illegally) parked her sports car. She worked as a night manager at a Queens bar– which is why she was arriving home so late. She was no more a “tough lesbian” nor an habitual “drunk” than Elizabeth Short (“The Black Dahlia”) had been a prostitute and a porn actress! Kitty Genovese was very discreet about her private life– which is why it took several decades for it to become public knowledge that she had been a lesbian, let alone one who had spent that last year of her life living with her lesbian lover.

The slurs against Kitty Genovese’s character were the result of some of her neighbors’ blaming her for the public opprobrium that they suffered, as a result of the massive publicity about their alleged apathy. Almost none of the neighbors who were awakened by her screams that night even knew that it was Kitty Genovese who was being attacked– among those who even knew her at all– let alone assumed that she was merely in a drunken row with a lover.

    • Replies: @WhatEvvs
Then either my memory of the NY Mag article is faulty, or the article was faulty.

How do you know so much about Kitty Genovese's late night habits? Yes, she came from a decent middle-class family - this means she could never come home late?

"let alone assumed that she was merely in a drunken row with a lover."

Nothing I wrote implied that. Adjectives in a sentence is not an equation.

If you are really interested in what happened that night, I suggest reading a book written by the lead prosecutor, who details what happened to both Kitty Genovese and the "other" victim, poor 15 year old Barbara Kralik:

    http://www.amazon.com/Twisted-Confessions-Behind-Genovese-Barbara/dp/1481746154

It appears that Moseley may not have murdered Kralik after all. She might have been murdered by another psycho, Alvin Mitchell, who got off. It's all very strange and I don't understand it.

In the 1976 version of "Assault on Precinct 13," the gang assaulting the station is pictured as interracial.

The Warriors (1979) were mixed black and white. The cleverest way race is used is in the original Death Wish where the actual attackers of the hero’s family are 3 whites but as the film goes on he increasingly is shooting young black muggers, which is apparently meant to show his descent into depravity.

  82. Perhaps another example of the Jewish obsession with the Holocaust narrative (Good Germans doing nothing while Hitler and his associates did their fell work) intruding into American life?

We need an analog of Godwins law for the first person to mention the Holocaust.

Then of course we need another term for the first person to mention Hitler and the Holocaust.

  83. @Danindc
Is it possible Rosenthal wasn't looking out for the common good??!

One of the things that was strikingly obvious to me, in reading Abe Rosenthal’s book, was that Kitty Genovese, as an individual, did not move or motivate him at all. She was merely being used by him as a device to analyze modern American society, in general, and New York City, in particular. I got no sense that he either identified with her, as a fellow human being, or felt any particular sympathy for her plight, as an individual. He merely had a sociological point that he wished to illustrate.

  84. @prosa123
Another reason why none of the witnesses called the police is that most assumed the altercation (of which each one saw or heard only a small part) involved drunks from a nearby bar, which was infamous for attracting loud and often disorderly patrons.

That is true– although, in reality, that bar, like the one that Kitty Genovese herself worked at as a night manager, had been closed for awhile, by the time that she arrived back at the Long Island Rail Road station, where she parked her car, and then was subsequently overtaken, on the sidewalk, by Winston Moseley, who knifed her in the back, to begin his prolonged, two-part assault.

  85. What kind of neighborhood is Kew Gardens, and what was its ethnic component in 1964? Did it have a significant Italian population (I’m guessing that it didn’t) and was there any particular reason why an Italian American lesbian would be living there? Wikipedia says that it’s ethnically diverse and had a large influx of German Jews after WW2, but maybe someone can fill in the details. What about the ethnic makeup of the witnesses, and are they listed anywhere? The only names that I can find with a quick search are a Joseph Fink and a Karl Ross, who called the police(possibly the witness who fled to a neighbors apartment and then called a friend to ask for advice about whether he should call the police before calling the police.)

Tens years later a similar incident happened in the same neighborhood, when neighbors failed to report Sandra Zahler being beaten to death in an apartment overlooking the street where Genovese was murdered. It’s also the hometown of Jerry Springer and Bernie Goetz. What ever the details may be, it doesn’t seem that Kew Gardens was ever the equivalent of Anytown, USA.

    @Bill P

The black walked away claiming he "didn't do nuthin'," and the white ran off at high speed.

What I've come to realize is that I did these things because I had a sense of ownership of my city that most people don't share. In another town, I wouldn't have interceded.

It's by design.

“If an East Indian or Chinese software worker saw me being beaten on the streets of Seattle or San Francisco, would he intervene? Would he even bother to call the cops? I doubt it.”

I doubt it too. Diversity destroys communities, sharing and trust. I believe the term is called BOWLING ALONE.

“But cities change and as friends and family are replaced by strangers that sense of ownership goes away even for those who grew up in them.”

Rosenthal, on the other hand, was worried about apathy......Perhaps another example of the Jewish obsession with the Holocaust narrative (Good Germans doing nothing while Hitler and his associated do their fell work) intruding into American life?

There is little doubt that the Holocaust narrative was precisely what motivated both Mr. Rosenthal and most of the social psychologists who subsequently turned Kitty Genovese’s personal plight, at the hands of a murderous Black sociopath, into a social “syndrome” that supposedly inflicted itself upon modern society-at-large, particularly in densely populated metropolitan areas, and especially in New York City itself. One of the great ironies of that social-scientific formulation, however, was that Kitty Genovese lived and died in a heavily Jewish neighborhood. Both of the men whom I alluded to, in an earlier comment, above, had seemingly Jewish names. I believe that it was one or the other of those two men who literally stated to the police, in explaining his decision not to call them for help: “I didn’t want to get involved.” Thus, a modern sociological cliche was coined….

Interesting. I didn’t know she was a Lesbian, but then, i didn’t know her killer was black either. How will Jewish cultural Marxism spin this? Being a lesbian, she could have been the victim of a hate crime, but she was also white and her killer is black, so we know that can’t be so, since whites can’t be the victim of hate crimes and blacks can’t be the perpetrators.

  90. @DJF
I was just a young child in New York State when this happened but over the years I remember at least three different classes using Kitty Genovese as a morality story about how bad society was.

However I never heard in school that the killer had not only been identified, but gone to trial and been convicted within a few months of the crime. Nor did I hear it in the various editorial that have used the story for their own ends. The fact that the same murderer escaped prison and raped and murdered others was also not mentioned.

Its almost as if they were paid not to notice.

“Its almost as if they were paid not to notice.”

    In a sense they were.

Actually Judge Shapiro was pretty tough. He said that although he didn’t believe in capital punishment, on Moseley he’d flip the switch himself.

Here is a good wrap-up of what happened, baseball bat and all:

    http://nypost.com/2014/02/16/book-reveals-real-story-behind-the-kitty-genovese-murder/

The lawyer I was thinking of is mentioned in this contemporary account:

Look at how Shapiro slapped down the racial stuff. Moseley is described as a “Negro” – but that had no effect at the time.

Moseley killed a 15 year old as well. It is terrifying to think that such people circulate amongst us.

What is interesting is that even fifty years ago the media was trying to create a narrative about the killing, which it got wrong, rather then reporting the true facts. They do the same thing today. Look at Trayvon Martin and Ferguson. Vdare.com has a term for this. They call it “narrative collapse”.

Not a lot has changed in fifty years.

  93. Why are we going on and on about a 50-year-old crime when, just yesterday, the Japanese baseball crown was won by SoftBank, one of whose avian mascots is Honky Hawk.

Honky Hawk! Why, Caucasians from Yerevan to Yakutat should be up in arms!

At the very least, we should fly the champs on commercial from their city to Oshawa, Ont., so their baggage tags read FUK-YOO.

  94. @E. Rekshun
Though I never specifically studied the crime, I, too, didn't learn that Genovese's killer was black (or learn his name, from which I would deduce that he was black) until a few years ago.

...the concept of a black “serial killer” didn’t really exist yet...

    There, fixed it.

“…the concept of a black “serial killer” didn’t really exist yet…

No, the term “serial killer” wasn’t really in use until about 1970. The police resisted the concept until late in the 1970s, according to Bill James.

  95. @dumpstersquirrel
Yes, what was the mexicant "laying" in the driveway? A sleeping mat to lie upon?
And then what had he "laid" down again? His spliffy?

Should be lying and lay, not laying and laid.

No matter how much I try I can’t remember the principle parts of those verbs. For those interested:

to lie: lie lay lain lying

to lay: lay laid laid laying

And then there is the other “to lie” meaning tell a falsehood:

to lie: lie lied lied lying

  96. Obviously, “like” should be “lie”. Your editor wouldn’t let me change it.

  97. @Whiskey

Even the 1975 remake of Farewell, My Lovely with Robert Mitchum is very unPC; the goon Moose Malloy murders a black club owner for being insufficiently helpful finding his old flame, and when the cops show up they and Phillip Marlowe basically yuk it up over the corpse.

  98. RE: Death Wish,

In the novel, the protagonist was a Jewish guy named Paul Benjamin; the film version made him a Gentile named Paul Kersey.

  99. RE: Black Serial Killers,

    Some stats:

The 155 Black sexual serial killers from the 417 total represented 37.2% of all the sexual serial murders in the U.S. as of April, 2012. In 1980 Black sexual serial killers accounted for approximately 21.7% of the murders. Black sexual serial killer doubled between 1991 and 2000 to 50.6% and then peaked at 70.1% between 2001 and 2012. Presently, the overall percentage is 37.2%, which is almost double the percentage from the 1980’s.

The data was divided chronologically beginning with cases which occurred prior to 1980 and then calculated in ten-year increments up to the April, 2012. The following Table provides a breakdown of sexual serial murder prior to 1980 up to April, 2012.

    Research Conclusions

There was a total of 417 Sexual Serial Killers who killed 3440 victims. The 155 Black sexual serial killers, who represented 37.2% of the total, murdered 1002 victims. The most frequent modality of death of the victims was strangulation, which occurred in 68.6% of the cases.

This research revealed that Black sexual serial killers targeted more White female victims than White sexual serial killers targeted Black females. The exceptions to that finding were prostitute and homosexual serial killings.

31.6% of the cases involved White victims, 45.3% of the cases involved Black victims and in 23.1% of the cases the victims were Black, White, Hispanic or other. 21.9% of the Black sexual serial killers engaged in home invasions murders involving 200 White female victims and 15 Black female victims and 9 mixed race killings.

    http://www.practicalhomicide.com/Research/BlackSexSerKillers.htm

Blacks make up a disproportionate percentage of serial killers.

  100. Hilariously, one of the muggers in Death Wish is played by Jeff Goldblum!

When the movie came out I remember a lot of complaints about Paul Kersey (Bronson’s character) shooting black muggers, even though they made the proportion of white muggers to black ones unrealistically high.

One of New York’s prestige critics panned “Death Wish” and described it as “a sick fascist fantasy.” Within a year I saw a news blurb that that critic was badly beaten in a mugging in midtown Manhattan. I always wondered if he had any sick fascist fantasies while the blows were raining down.

  101. @Mike
    Two points:

    - I think you are vastly over rating how much anyone in LA would care if they ran someone over.

    - Serial killers are profiled as white males.
There is no inner voice saying "what you are doing is wrong". Black serial killers seem to kill those who no one is surprised to see die violently.
White serial killers have a propensity for grand gestures - pentagrams daubed on the body etc - which is like a neon sign that the crime is out of the ordinary. They also frequently attack people who no one expects to die a violent death - the pretty young receptionist, the college student.
In the coming decades I think we are going to see (at least inside law enforcement) an understanding that black serial killing - like all other violent crimes - is a field dominated by black males. White serial killers are basically the hipsters of the serial killing world: "look at me, I made the ink for my pentagram from the ink of the rarest squid on earth! Lets see if the police can work it out!".

As a trial junkie, I have noticed that most of the serial killers surfacing in the last 10-12 years have been black.

  102. @Svigor

Now the page contains a booking foto of her killer. So all of that is largely moot. But it was fun while it lasted.

Maybe, by way of compromise, the photo should be captioned, "don't Notice."

Now we know why ole Abe pounced on the story; it was the exception, not the rule, and he'd found a Great White Defendant. Not just one, but a whole neighborhood!

I wouldn't intervene (for a stranger) without a gun, in a jurisdiction without laws that protect people for intervening. Calling the cops and going back to bed is what TPTB and the law expect in dumps like Chicago and NYC.

Serial killers are profiled as white males. This has been true for those caught.

The way you write, it's true of black serial killers that were caught that they were profiled as whites. Is that what you meant to say?

Because that's probably true. We do know that blacks are serial killers at up to twice their share of the population - at a higher rate than whites.

Not that we can get an accurate picture, what with the gov't refusing to break "hispanics" out from "whites" in the crime stats.

Advances in DNA testing and its widespread use are resulting in black males with multi decade killing sprees getting caught. This has been puzzling me but I believe I have worked it out: white serial killers have a different internal moral architecture and WANT to get caught.

Ah, I see what you're getting at. Maybe. I'd put the increased difficulty of catching black serial killers (assuming it exists) down to several other factors, first:

    1. Black crime. There's a lot of "background noise" in black areas.
    2. Black indifference to violent crime. Blacks are notoriously useless in helping the police solve crimes.
    3. Black disorderliness. It's harder to find scumbags in a neighborhood where scumbags and their socially marginal victims are normal.
    4. Social indifference. The press and the public don't like to hear about black crime. Contradicts the narrative. So, there's less pressure on the police to solve these murders.

Yes, creative ways can be found to produce a Great White Defendant. With the Kitty Genovese case it was indicting the (white) neighborhood instead of the (black) killer.

  103. Sometimes people don’t do anything because they think it’s a prank:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2815496/Farmingdale-mom-beheaded-suicidal-son-couldn-t-medication-time-prevent-tragedy.html

Mentally-ill Derek Ward, 35, decapitated his 66-year-old mother, Patricia, on Tuesday night before dragging her body outside their apartment in Farmingdale, New York, in what neighbours thought at first was a Halloween prank.

Derek had apparently sat with his mother’s mutilated body for a few minutes inside their blood-spattered home following the brutal attack before taking it outside and kicking her head 20 feet.

Neighbours initially thought it was part of a Halloween prank and tried to pick up the body. As they were doing so, Derek jumped in front of an oncoming Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train.

  104. @JK
I'd love to see such a compilation. I was amused how in Collateral, the excellent Tom Cruise/Michael Mann movie, the assassin played by Cruise and his black driver (Jamie Foxx) were at one point attacked by a white, blond Los Angeles street gang.

Yeah, Collateral was a good movie, and Cruise was excellent. But almost everything Michael Mann has done is worth watching. See Manhunter (the original Hannibal Lector movie) and Heat with DeNiro and Pacino.

  105. @David In TN
Yes and Dashiell Hammett was one of the major public leftists of his time while portraying blacks "realistically" in his fiction.

Dashiell Hammett’s books about the Continental Op are well worth reading. Right up there with Chandler.

Then either my memory of the NY Mag article is faulty, or the article was faulty.

How do you know so much about Kitty Genovese’s late night habits? Yes, she came from a decent middle-class family – this means she could never come home late?

“let alone assumed that she was merely in a drunken row with a lover.”

Nothing I wrote implied that. Adjectives in a sentence is not an equation.

If you are really interested in what happened that night, I suggest reading a book written by the lead prosecutor, who details what happened to both Kitty Genovese and the “other” victim, poor 15 year old Barbara Kralik:

It appears that Moseley may not have murdered Kralik after all. She might have been murdered by another psycho, Alvin Mitchell, who got off. It’s all very strange and I don’t understand it.

  107. @Jake

In the very good documentary The Killing of America there is a line "The 60s was called the age of sex murder because sex killers appeared every 5 years, but in the 70s they began appearing every 5 weeks".

Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, the Hillside Stranglers, David Berkowitz, the Yorkshire Ripper, Dennis Nilsen, Harold Shipman, Dennis Rader, Rodney Alcala, Andrei Chikatilo, Richard Chase, Dean Corll, Juan Corona, Wayne Williams, Randy Kraft, Randall Woodfield, the Deaths Angels, Carl Watts, and Arthur Shawcross all started their killing sprees in the 70s. This coincides with the acceptance and mass consumption of pornography by mainstream society, although I'm sure other factors also played a part.

    To Jake;

“There was a massive increase in serial killers in the 1970’s.”

This is documented extensively in the book Vigilante by William Tucker. He explains the great increase in “stranger killings” by serial killers as due to a steep decline in the death penalty in the USA.

  112. Regarding the Kitty Genovese case: “The case remains in the “What’s wrong with us?” column of public debate, rather than being filed as an exhibit in what was then called “The Negro Question.” I’ve spoken to friends about the case as I’ve written this, and one, a highly-educated, widely-read crime buff, didn’t know that Moseley was black. I found that to be oddly heartening, and then slightly depressing in how unusual it was for an interracial crime to be remembered in color-blind terms.”

This kind of thing: Jews standing idlely by while gentiles suffer death and injury isn’t a fluke, but a natural consequence of the Jewish religion, and it’s the kind of thing that used to lead to pogroms in the old days. No, that doesn't really make sense at all. What does make sense is that you're obviously trying to find an interpretation that satisfies your prejudices.

How the hell do you suppose that those residents knew that this NYC Italian-American woman was gentile? Do you suppose she was screaming that she was gentile while being murdered? Yeah, I'm sure that's exactly how it happened.

Morty! What's all that noise outside? Oh don't worry about it, honey. Get back to bed. There's a woman outside who looks like she could be my sister. I think she's in trouble, but she kindly informed everyone by screaming that she's gentile, so let's just get back to bed.

Like most people, I never knew the racial component of this crime. I'm 46 and have heard references for years. But then a couple of years ago, I was reading up on it and learned that the rapist/killer was black. Then I thought "What? That doesn't make sense. So much for the evil white racists of the bad ol' days who would lynch a black man for so much as looking at a white woman." Now, I learn, like you, that it was a jewish neighborhood and it kinda makes sense again. Probably thought she was just some shiksa cavorting with the schvarzters. I haven't read the book for 25 years, but I seem to remember a scene in Portnoy's Complaint where the protagonist is extremely sexually excited at the idea of a shiksa being defiled by some black guys.
  115. I am not saying that either your memory is poor or the article was misquoting the neighbors; I am saying, again, that the slurs against Kitty Genovese’s character were made by people in the neighborhood who resented being made objects of national derision and contempt– and who, in defense, took it out on the memory of a slaughtered young woman (who was generally not one of their own kind, anyway)!

Feel free to provide us, here, with some quotes from either the police or the prosecutors demonstrating that they– as opposed to an unknown number of anonymous neighbors with a posthumous ax to grind– believed Kitty Genovese to have been a “tough lesbian” who regularly awakened her neighbors, in the middle of the night, when returning home roaring drunk.

She regularly returned home in the middle of the night because she was a night manager of a bar. Do you know many bars where their managers regularly get roaring drunk, along with their customers? I used to spend a goodly amount of time in bars, in my misspent youth, and that was never my observation, sober or otherwise– and I was a trained social scientist, during most of those erstwhile drinking days.

It would not shock me to learn that Kitty Genovese was the only one of the three alleged victims of Winston Moseley that he actually did kill. His word is hardly of oracular veracity, as demonstrated by the conflicting testimony he has given, over the past half century– along with the simple fact of his being a criminal psychopath, generally. Thanks, regardless, for the book recommendation.

That’s what The Narrative teaches, or at least implies. In reality, Birth of a Nation was probably the high water mark for white racism in cinema. In the bad old days, blacks were portrayed like Buckwheat, basically. Harmless and magical.

  119. Wasn’t something similar behind the Crown Heights riot decades later? IIRC a ‘Jewish’ ambulance took away the Jewish victim but left the injured black kid on the sidewalk.

  120. No, the term “serial killer” wasn’t really in use until about 1970. The police resisted the concept until late in the 1970s, according to Bill James.

Around 1979, when I was in kindergarten, the bogeyman was “The Man From Atlanta.” I remember it clearly. We were all afraid of this man, but we had no idea who he was. We had this idea that we were supposed to avoid men in vans.

My kindergarten was mostly black, so I suppose the paranoia made sense: much later in life, I learned that this playground bogeyman was actually Wayne Williams, a homosexual black serial killer who preyed on black boys and young men.

Maybe he was one of the first of the sensationalized serial killers.

Later, of course, we had Ted Bundy and the Green River Killer. One of my schoolmates found a naked female corpse in some blackberry brambles back in the mid 80s. I think it was determined to be one of Gary Ridgway’s victims, but that might have been a schoolyard legend (the corpse, however, was very real).

  121. I can remember in the 1964 campaign over proposition 14, to repeal the Rumford antidiscrimination act and prohibit the legislature from passing a similar law, black crime was openly discussed in private and semi-public discussions of the subject, but not on advertising or statements by mainstream politicians. The initiative passed with 65% of the vote. I was on the liberal side then, believing crime to be exclusively environmentally caused.

Plenty of serial killers prior to Gein:

H.H. Holmes:1861-1896 (for a look at his career, read The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson)
    Victims:9–200 (9 confirmed, 27 confessed, 200 estimated)

Austin Servant Girl Servant Girl Annihilator :1884 and 1885

  123. Ed Gein was likely ‘inspired’ by the lurid stories that were coming out of Europe in the aftermath of WWII. Killing people and keeping their skins as souvenirs… Was he boiling people into soap as well?

  124. Crazy serial killer were a feature of sexually-liberated, coked-up Weimar Germany: Kurten, Grossman, Denke, Haarman, Blume… . Vicki Baum’s autobiography mentions a serial cannibal killer at the end of WW1 who butchered and sold his victims to starving Germans.

Similarities between 1920s Gemany and our own time are a commonplace now, but once were thought insightful (e.g., Closing of the American Mind).

I also once owned a book which featured a chapter on French psychokillers from 1900-1920.

  125. Gein, technically, wasn’t serial killer; he only killed two people that we know of. Mostly, he was a grave robber.

  127. The history of the term “serial killer”:

The English term and concept of “serial killer” is commonly attributed to former FBI Special agent Robert Ressler in the 1970s.[9][10] Author Ann Rule postulates in her 2004 book Kiss Me, Kill Me that the English-language credit for coining the term serial killer goes to LAPD detective Pierce Brooks, creator of the ViCAP system.[11] In his book Serial Killers: The Method and Madness of Monsters, criminal justice historian Peter Vronsky argues that while Ressler might have coined the term serial homicide within law in 1974 at Bramshill Police Academy in Britain, the terms serial murder and serial murderer appear in 1966 in John Brophy’s book The Meaning of Murder. Moreover, Vronsky reports that the term serial killer does not appear in Ann Rule’s seminal book on Ted Bundy, The Stranger Beside Me, published in 1980, when the term was not yet in popular use.[8] In his more recent study, Vronsky states that the construct “serial killing” first enters into American popular usage with the appearance of the term in the New York Times in the spring of 1981 to describe Atlanta serial killer Wayne Williams. Subsequently throughout the 1980s the term was used in the pages of the New York Times on 233 occasions, but by the end of the 1990s in its second decade the use of the term escalated to 2,514 times in the nation’s ‘newspaper of record’.[12] The German term and concept was coined by the influential Ernst Gennat, who described Peter Kürten as a “serienmörder” (literally “serial murderer”) in his article “Die Düsseldorfer Sexualverbrechen” in 1930.[13]

  128. I’ve been waiting for years, and finally you use one of my cartoons to illustrate a post. But it’s one that demonstrates what an old-fashioned fuddy-duddy I am. I was not attacking you, earlier, nor even the article to which you were alluding, much less "freak[ing] out" over it. I was attacking Kitty Genovese's gutless neighbors, who were, in fact, blaming her for their apathy, claiming that she was the type of person to come home late, roaring drunk, regularly waking them from their restful sleep with her anti-social behavior, such that it was only natural for them to think nothing of her screaming bloody murder, and that she was about to die, before they rolled over and went back to sleep!

In fact, as I noted, above, it is highly unlikely that many, if any, knew that it was Kitty Genovese who was being attacked, until after the fact-- which is precisely when some of them started making up stories about Kitty Genovese's character. I am not saying that they would have acted any differently if it had been a Jewish woman who was being slaughtered; I am simply saying that they were more than willing, after the fact, to slur a shiksa's reputation to defend their own-- which is in keeping with their tradition. If you are denying the reality of Jewish ethnocentrism, especially the Jewish view of gentile women, you are a joke!

If you want to tell me to go fuck myself, Cookies, spell it out; don't be as gutless as her neighbors were, half a century ago, when some of them watched Winston Moseley slaughter Kitty Genovese, and either went back to bed or slammed the door in her terrorized face-- before adding insult to injury, by slurring the woman whom they did not even attempt to save!

Not really the point. There was a kerfuffle in a teapot at Wikipedia when users tried to edit the post to reveal Moseley's race. 'Why should people know his race???,' screamed the thought police, removing every single edit that mentioned it, until his mugshot was posted.

Why shouldn't they? It's Wikipedia, for fuck's sake. Why shouldn't people have access to whatever random piece of information might interest them, so long as its relevant to the article? If it were an article about a white man murdering a black woman do you think the Wiki-KGB would object?

"Like his being male. The majority of sick people who do these things are men. Strange, that."

Yep, and yet the differences in criminality between different subsets of men vary by one or two orders of magnitude.

  133. For some reason sabermetrician Bill James’ book on statistical analysis of past true crimes isn’t available in my (gigantic) public library. I know James isn’t one of Steve’s favorites, but didn’t he look back at some famous case histories and suggest that serial killing might have been at fault before the concept became known? For example (though I haven’t read the book) I believe he theorized that Lizzie Borden was actually innocent, and her father’s and stepmother’s murders were done by a local serial killer…something that 1892 Massachusetts couldn’t wrap its head around mentally.

On the flip side, I think he also suggested that some crimes we have chalked up as serial killings, like the “Boston Strangler” murders in the early 60s, were actually unconnected, individual killings by several persons that Albert DeSalvo had the misfortune of being circumstantially tied to.

The recent interest in “cold cases” tends, I think, to end up revealing more past serial killings. The interesting old case of the murder of Senator Chuck Percy of Illinois’ daughter Valerie, long unsolved but always suspected to have been perpetrated by a professional cat burglar who lost control, just this past year seems to have been cracked–the likely killer was a violent psycho who was also an heir to a multimillion-dollar fortune named William Thoresen III, who may very well have killed many more victims from coast to coast.

One of them in particular, “The Red Harvest” which is the only one of full novella length I think, was the basis for Akira Kurosawa’s “Yojimbo”, Sergio Leone’s “A Fist Full of Dollars”, and Walter Hill’s “Last Man Standing” (this last movie staying closest to the source material).

  137. “Robert the Wise says:

    @antman

Hilariously, one of the muggers in Death Wish is played by Jeff Goldblum!”

“Uh, uh, uh, hand over your wallet, or I’ll,…..uh, uh, uh,……cut you!”

Something has changed. The internet and alternative media news outlets that allow the truth to come out today which did not exist back then, that’s what’s changed.

One wonders how much legislation and policy initiatives pushed over the past fifty years would have been implemented if we did have such alternative outlets then. For example how would the Immigration Act of 1965, the 1986 amnesty, and the 1990 visa lotto have fared if alternative opinions were allowed? Look at how much the elite have struggled with multiple amnesties this century despite having all the MSM at their disposal. The opposing arguments have gotten out, and have thus far mucked up the master plan.

My biggest concern is that the alternative outlets have come into existent too late in the day to prevent our demise. At this point they can only slow down, not stop, our inevitable descent into becoming essentially part of Latin America.

  139. “Vicki Baum’s autobiography mentions a serial cannibal killer at the end of WW1 who butchered and sold his victims to starving Germans.”

Oh yes, that was Fritz Haarmann. There were even popular songs about him in Weimar Germany which my grandfather could still recall in the 1990s:

    Warte, warte noch ein Weilchen,
dann kommt Haarmann auch zu Dir
    und macht mit dem Hackebeilchen
    Fleischsalat aus Dir.

    roughly translated as:
Just wait for a little while
then Haarmann will come to you too
    and with his meat cleaver
he’ll make meat salad of you

    German humour, haha!

For some reason sabermetrician Bill James' book on statistical analysis of past true crimes isn't available in my (gigantic) public library. I know James isn't one of Steve's favorites, but didn't he look back at some famous case histories and suggest that serial killing might have been at fault before the concept became known? For example (though I haven't read the book) I believe he theorized that Lizzie Borden was actually innocent, and her father's and stepmother's murders were done by a local serial killer...something that 1892 Massachusetts couldn't wrap its head around mentally.

On the flip side, I think he also suggested that some crimes we have chalked up as serial killings, like the "Boston Strangler" murders in the early 60s, were actually unconnected, individual killings by several persons that Albert DeSalvo had the misfortune of being circumstantially tied to.

The recent interest in "cold cases" tends, I think, to end up revealing more past serial killings. The interesting old case of the murder of Senator Chuck Percy of Illinois' daughter Valerie, long unsolved but always suspected to have been perpetrated by a professional cat burglar who lost control, just this past year seems to have been cracked--the likely killer was a violent psycho who was also an heir to a multimillion-dollar fortune named William Thoresen III, who may very well have killed many more victims from coast to coast.

My review of Bill James’ “Popular Crime:”

I didn't know this happened in a Jewish neighborhood. Suddenly it all makes sense.

This kind of thing: Jews standing idlely by while gentiles suffer death and injury isn't a fluke, but a natural consequence of the Jewish religion, and it's the kind of thing that used to lead to pogroms in the old days. That in turn explains the agitation of more perceptive Jews like Rosenthal, who saw the danger, and sought to pressure their kinsfolk into behaving in a more socially responsible manner.

No, that doesn’t really make sense at all. What does make sense is that you’re obviously trying to find an interpretation that satisfies your prejudices.

How the hell do you suppose that those residents knew that this NYC Italian-American woman was gentile? Do you suppose she was screaming that she was gentile while being murdered? Yeah, I’m sure that’s exactly how it happened.

Morty! What’s all that noise outside? Oh don’t worry about it, honey. Get back to bed. There’s a woman outside who looks like she could be my sister. I think she’s in trouble, but she kindly informed everyone by screaming that she’s gentile, so let’s just get back to bed.

" and who, in defense, took it out on the memory of a slaughtered young woman (who was generally not one of their own kind, anyway)!"

Nothing I said should be interpreted as defending what happened to Genovese. What happened to her was a terrible, brutal, crime, and her neighbors didn't behave as they should have. All I did was remember (inaccurately, perhaps) a revisionist article from the mid-90s, and you freak out. Of course, this being Steve Sailer's joint, it wouldn't be complete without a filthy slur against Jews. What is it with you losers? The implication that they would have felt less about Catherine Genovese because she wasn't Jewish is disgusting.

The judge who presided over the trial and half the team that put the monster in jail was Jewish. Judge Shapiro said he wouldn't have minded pulling the switch on Moseley himself.

GFY, sweetie. Good luck in the film industry.

I was not attacking you, earlier, nor even the article to which you were alluding, much less “freak[ing] out” over it. I was attacking Kitty Genovese’s gutless neighbors, who were, in fact, blaming her for their apathy, claiming that she was the type of person to come home late, roaring drunk, regularly waking them from their restful sleep with her anti-social behavior, such that it was only natural for them to think nothing of her screaming bloody murder, and that she was about to die, before they rolled over and went back to sleep!

In fact, as I noted, above, it is highly unlikely that many, if any, knew that it was Kitty Genovese who was being attacked, until after the fact– which is precisely when some of them started making up stories about Kitty Genovese’s character. I am not saying that they would have acted any differently if it had been a Jewish woman who was being slaughtered; I am simply saying that they were more than willing, after the fact, to slur a shiksa’s reputation to defend their own– which is in keeping with their tradition. If you are denying the reality of Jewish ethnocentrism, especially the Jewish view of gentile women, you are a joke!

If you want to tell me to go fuck myself, Cookies, spell it out; don’t be as gutless as her neighbors were, half a century ago, when some of them watched Winston Moseley slaughter Kitty Genovese, and either went back to bed or slammed the door in her terrorized face– before adding insult to injury, by slurring the woman whom they did not even attempt to save!

I don’t think people understand how noisy New York is relative to the suburbs and rural areas. There is a constant hum of noise. If you’ve ever lived there for a while and then spent the night somewhere in the suburbs, even a significantly developed suburb, the difference is quite stark. The relative silence is very jarring and uncomfortable. You can have trouble sleeping at first and you have to get used to it. Furthermore, there is the relentless stream of intermittent noises, both human shouts, yells, voices, screams and non-human noises like clanks, slams, thumps, etc. You become inured to these noises and learn to ignore them. If you paid attention every time you heard one of these sounds, you wouldn’t be able to function normally. You’d go insane. And most of the time, these noises amount to nothing.

There’s a similar thing dealing with the homeless in New York and other major cities. In a city like New York, where you have to walk everywhere and where there are a lot of homeless panhandlers, if you gave out change to every homeless person you passed, you’d end up spending quite a bit pretty quickly. You’d go broke. You’d also end up spending a lot of time pausing every block and fumbling for change. So while you may give out money after you first move there or when you’re visiting, if you live there for any length of the time, you end up not doing it and ignoring the homeless altogether. It doesn’t mean you don’t care about the homeless. It just becomes necessary to function and live normally.

I suspect this explains most of the Genovese case. It was 3 am in March when it’s still cold at night in New York. Most would have been sleeping with the windows closed. And most would have learned to ignore all kinds of noises.

The murder took place at one of the few apartment complexes in the neighborhood. It was built near the train track, so it was probably home to more downscale people who were also fairly sound sleepers who were used to sleeping through trains roaring by, domestic arguments, and the like.

Actually since it was 3 in the morning, she was probably wearing her other giant dunce cap, the one with "GENTILE" in big blinking neon letters. Oh and since most of the residents were probably sleeping and not staring out of their windows looking for gentiles, she probably also had her megaphone with her to proclaim loudly that she was gentile.

Unless Mr. Rosenthal simply was lying about what he was told, at that particular lunch, it was the police commissioner himself who, despite all of his professional experience, was mystified and disgusted by the neighbors' reactions-- both during the crime itself and during the police investigation, in the days that followed.

If that is what he really told Rosenthal-- and I have no reason, to date, fifty years later, to doubt it-- then that is the opinion that impresses me, not any spin that Rosenthal and his Times staffers might or might not have been guilty of inserting into their news coverage. 153. This happened to a friend of mine during the mid 1970s in Detroit. She was walking in the area of Wayne State University when she was attacked by several prepubescent black boys who grabbed at her breasts and buttocks. There were at least two white male adults across the street who just stared and did nothing. Another was a middle-aged, middle-class-looking black man. After she finally got away from the black boys, the middle-aged black man came over to her and apologized for the behavior of his “black brothers.” He then told her that she should take the sexual assault as a “compliment.” “They only did it because you’re so pretty,” he said. I take it that “pretty” means white.

  156. In one of the newer articles that I just came across, I learned something very surprising to me: Kitty Genovese had been married in her teens, but the marriage had been annulled. Which leads me to wonder: Is that what a lesbian did, at that age, in the America of the 1950s, to cover up her lesbianism? Did she do it to try to become “normal,” or to remain in good stead with her traditional Roman Catholic upbringing? Or, is it just possible that she did it because she was in love with the man? Did Kitty Genovese’s supposed lesbianism cause her to live so discreetly that her secret survived her by forty or more years? Or, was it not known, for all of those years, because it simply was not true? Is there any evidence that she actually was known to family and/or friends, during her lifetime, as a closeted lesbian, other than the extremely belated claim of her ultimate roommate? I will be interested in reading the new books on her….

    • Replies: @D. K.
I finally made some time for reading Kevin Cook's recent book, "Kitty Genovese: The Murder, the Bystanders, the Crime that Changed America" (published in March, for the fiftieth anniversary of her murder), before heading off, early tomorrow morning, for my first Florida vacation in almost a quarter of a century. It is a more-or-less politically correct revisionist text, concentrating on her (and her roommate's) lesbianism, the civil rights movement, various police shortcomings, etc.

My own two biggest complaints, however, are (a) like virtually every would-be novelist since Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" success, the author (whose earlier books were all on sports!) tries to get inside the minds of his subjects, as if they were characters in a novel, not only spewing fifty-year-old private dialogue as if it had been recorded verbatim, at the time of utterance, for posterity, but also telling us what they were thinking and noticing, at any given moment; and (b) the book has nary a footnote-- not even so much as a single asterisk-- so it would be difficult to assess many of the claims in the book. There is merely a note on usage, among the end matter, stating that he used the past tense if something came from a secondary source (e.g., "so-and-so said"), while using the present tense if someone told him something during his own two years of research (e.g., "so-and-so says").

As a former lawyer, trained in History, inter alia, I find this particularly exasperating. It is clear, however, that he interviewed relatively few of the figures from 1964, and that most of the narrative comes from the former roommate. It is my own nature, greatly exacerbated by my academic and professional training, not to trust people's own recollections and motivations. I do not get the feeling that Mr. Cook-- who was born in the same year as I-- necessarily shares that particular propensity.

So, here is the take-away for me: I am convinced, now, that Kitty Genovese was, indeed, in a lesbian relationship with her roommate, and that that was not merely a belated, self-justifying claim on her aging roommate's part. According to Cook, one of the policemen actually outed Kitty Genovese in his own professional memoir, forty years ago! How that failed to register, for the next thirty years, until the roommate herself went public, is difficult to fathom!?! I am also convinced, however, that Kitty Genovese, unlike her roommate, was not a "born lesbian"-- attracted all of her life to women, and never to men. It turns out that Kitty Genovese's annulled marriage took place in 1959-- when she already was in her mid-twenties, not when she was a teenager. She apparently suffered from a physical defect that made coitus so painful as to be implausible for her; thus, the annulment. She supposedly confided in one of her female neighbors-- the one who bravely risked her own life to find Kitty, and cradle her in her own arms, until the ambulance arrived-- that there was a possibility of a surgical solution for her defect, and that she still held out hopes for bearing children, someday. I think, therefore, that Kitty Genovese's lesbianism was circumstantial, and that she would have preferred to have a normal married life, as both a wife and a mother.

As for Winston Moseley, I now am convinced that he did kill a black woman, a couple of weeks before killing Kitty Genovese, but that he did not have anything to do with the white teenager who had been killed, the year before; he merely took credit for that killing, during his initial police interrogation, because one of the detectives had flippantly (and foolishly, since the police already had an obvious suspect-- who was, in fact, ultimately convicted of that killing) suggested the possibility. As for his 1968 escape, he, in fact, did rape two different women, before surrendering to an F.B.I. agent. The second one, he literally patted on the head, before leaving, and told her that he wished that she never would have to go through such an ordeal again! Winston Moseley, now 80 and the longest-serving convict in the State of New York, is surely a psychopath; but, even within that rather-limited subset of human personalities, he is truly a very, very strange man!

The myth that communism ideals are inherently evil with a wildly exaggerated numbers of its victims is just a narrative the Western elites are using to keep their worker ants in check.

Bolshevism began as a project of post-1913 capitalism and progressivism. The commander of the US expeditionary force in Russia/SU in 1918-20 almost always acted in favor of the Reds over the Whites-see the proof at such places at Moldbug’s blog and Kerry Bolton’s book, Revolution From Above. The Soviet industrial base that saved it from collapse in 1941 was built by American capitalists (including Henry Ford) in the 1920s and 1930s-see The Soviet Economy and the Red Army, 1930-1945by Walter Scott Dunn.

People didn't notice this as much in 1964 because there was less to notice. This was before the wave of street crime that was committed overwhelmingly by young black men. His being "Negro" was just another datum.

Like his being male. The majority of sick people who do these things are men. Strange, that.

“Moseley was identified clearly as a “Negro” in the contemporary news accounts, not that this matters to most of the commenters here.”

Not really the point. There was a kerfuffle in a teapot at Wikipedia when users tried to edit the post to reveal Moseley’s race. ‘Why should people know his race???,’ screamed the thought police, removing every single edit that mentioned it, until his mugshot was posted.

Why shouldn’t they? It’s Wikipedia, for fuck’s sake. Why shouldn’t people have access to whatever random piece of information might interest them, so long as its relevant to the article? If it were an article about a white man murdering a black woman do you think the Wiki-KGB would object?

Yep, and yet the differences in criminality between different subsets of men vary by one or two orders of magnitude.

Bolshevism began as a project of post-1913 capitalism and progressivism. The commander of the US expeditionary force in Russia/SU in 1918-20 almost always acted in favor of the Reds over the Whites-see the proof at such places at Moldbug's blog and Kerry Bolton's book, Revolution From Above. The Soviet industrial base that saved it from collapse in 1941 was built by American capitalists (including Henry Ford) in the 1920s and 1930s-see The Soviet Economy and the Red Army, 1930-1945by Walter Scott Dunn.

The US intervention was mainly concerned with keeping the Japanese troops from exploiting the situation.

I think you'll find the most comprehensive Schlesinger biography to date lists the family as Congregationalist and then later Unitarian. (Schelsinger supposedly had an intense dislike of attending chapel at the schools he enrolled at which required it). The faculties of private universities were not notably Jewish in 1945 when Schlesinger was beginning his academic career. (Norman Cantor has offered testimony that Harvard's history department ca. 1955 was accommodating to incompetents with the right social connections). Schlesinger himself is known to the public primarily as court panegyrist to the Kennedy Administration. He's never really been part of a Jewish social matrix (except as the demographics of college arts-and-sciences faculties changed through the course of his career).

By race, perhaps - although the difference between the black murder rate and the Asian murder rate may be more than 10x. If you break it out by ethnicity, however, I suspect there are several groups which differ by close to two orders of magnitude, and maybe more.

Just look outside the USA. Some Central American countries have murder rates around 90 per 100,000. Hong Kong's murder rate so far for the current year is 0.4 per 100,000. That is well over two orders of magnitude.

The salient difference between them and Winston Moseley, however, is that the former did not sexually assault and slaughter anyone. If young Winston had been the first Black (then-Negro) man to be admitted to some university below the Mason-Dixon Line, in 1964, his race would have been the entire point of his notoriety. Nonetheless, if he were notable for anything positive-- other than hastening the development of the 9-1-1 emergency-telephone system, perhaps-- his race would be duly noted on Wikipedia, and by the mainstream media generally, purely as a matter of course.

[By the way, perhaps it is a matter of my living through those pre-modern days, with my personal memories edging back into the late 1950s, but calling the police, before the advent of the 9-1-1 system, was not quite as Byzantine as many writers, and some commenters here, make it out. As should be known to anyone who watches an appreciable amount of old movies, on TCM or otherwise, one merely picked up the receiver on one's telephone, dialed '0' on its stylish rotary dial, waited momentarily for the operator to come on the line ("Operator . . . What number, please?"), and then excitedly shouted: "Operator, this is an emergency; connect me to the police department!" (or, similar words to the same effect). It was not the proxy IQ test that many now make it out to have been.]

Like most people, I never knew the racial component of this crime. I’m 46 and have heard references for years. But then a couple of years ago, I was reading up on it and learned that the rapist/killer was black. Then I thought “What? That doesn’t make sense. So much for the evil white racists of the bad ol’ days who would lynch a black man for so much as looking at a white woman.” Now, I learn, like you, that it was a jewish neighborhood and it kinda makes sense again. Probably thought she was just some shiksa cavorting with the schvarzters. I haven’t read the book for 25 years, but I seem to remember a scene in Portnoy’s Complaint where the protagonist is extremely sexually excited at the idea of a shiksa being defiled by some black guys.

The man had passed out in front of my neighbor’s garage. My neighbor would not be able to see him laying on the ground before leaving his garage…. and he would have most likely ran him over, possibly fatally. The ambulance came out, hit their horn, and the guy drowsily woke up and moved on.

We moved out of Chicago in 2011, but every time we left our garage since that 2008 incident, we did what we called a “Drunk Mexican Check” where either my wife or I looked at the street directly in front of our car, lest we accidentally run over a passed out person.

And it does portray the black guy as evil.

In one of the newer articles that I just came across, I learned something very surprising to me: Kitty Genovese had been married in her teens, but the marriage had been annulled. Which leads me to wonder: Is that what a lesbian did, at that age, in the America of the 1950s, to cover up her lesbianism? Did she do it to try to become "normal," or to remain in good stead with her traditional Roman Catholic upbringing? Or, is it just possible that she did it because she was in love with the man? Did Kitty Genovese's supposed lesbianism cause her to live so discreetly that her secret survived her by forty or more years? Or, was it not known, for all of those years, because it simply was not true? Is there any evidence that she actually was known to family and/or friends, during her lifetime, as a closeted lesbian, other than the extremely belated claim of her ultimate roommate? I will be interested in reading the new books on her....

I finally made some time for reading Kevin Cook’s recent book, “Kitty Genovese: The Murder, the Bystanders, the Crime that Changed America” (published in March, for the fiftieth anniversary of her murder), before heading off, early tomorrow morning, for my first Florida vacation in almost a quarter of a century. It is a more-or-less politically correct revisionist text, concentrating on her (and her roommate’s) lesbianism, the civil rights movement, various police shortcomings, etc.

My own two biggest complaints, however, are (a) like virtually every would-be novelist since Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood” success, the author (whose earlier books were all on sports!) tries to get inside the minds of his subjects, as if they were characters in a novel, not only spewing fifty-year-old private dialogue as if it had been recorded verbatim, at the time of utterance, for posterity, but also telling us what they were thinking and noticing, at any given moment; and (b) the book has nary a footnote– not even so much as a single asterisk– so it would be difficult to assess many of the claims in the book. There is merely a note on usage, among the end matter, stating that he used the past tense if something came from a secondary source (e.g., “so-and-so said”), while using the present tense if someone told him something during his own two years of research (e.g., “so-and-so says”).

As a former lawyer, trained in History, inter alia, I find this particularly exasperating. It is clear, however, that he interviewed relatively few of the figures from 1964, and that most of the narrative comes from the former roommate. It is my own nature, greatly exacerbated by my academic and professional training, not to trust people’s own recollections and motivations. I do not get the feeling that Mr. Cook– who was born in the same year as I– necessarily shares that particular propensity.

So, here is the take-away for me: I am convinced, now, that Kitty Genovese was, indeed, in a lesbian relationship with her roommate, and that that was not merely a belated, self-justifying claim on her aging roommate’s part. According to Cook, one of the policemen actually outed Kitty Genovese in his own professional memoir, forty years ago! How that failed to register, for the next thirty years, until the roommate herself went public, is difficult to fathom!?! I am also convinced, however, that Kitty Genovese, unlike her roommate, was not a “born lesbian”– attracted all of her life to women, and never to men. It turns out that Kitty Genovese’s annulled marriage took place in 1959– when she already was in her mid-twenties, not when she was a teenager. She apparently suffered from a physical defect that made coitus so painful as to be implausible for her; thus, the annulment. She supposedly confided in one of her female neighbors– the one who bravely risked her own life to find Kitty, and cradle her in her own arms, until the ambulance arrived– that there was a possibility of a surgical solution for her defect, and that she still held out hopes for bearing children, someday. I think, therefore, that Kitty Genovese’s lesbianism was circumstantial, and that she would have preferred to have a normal married life, as both a wife and a mother.

As for Winston Moseley, I now am convinced that he did kill a black woman, a couple of weeks before killing Kitty Genovese, but that he did not have anything to do with the white teenager who had been killed, the year before; he merely took credit for that killing, during his initial police interrogation, because one of the detectives had flippantly (and foolishly, since the police already had an obvious suspect– who was, in fact, ultimately convicted of that killing) suggested the possibility.

    "Mea maxima culpa!!!"

Having just read, in the past several days, two more books on the Kitty Genovese case, I need to revise my judgments, supra.

First, I read Catherine Pelonero's "Kitty Genovese" (yes, the same generic main title as Mr. Cook's take on the case!)-- and it is so far superior to Mr. Cook's effort that I would hesitate even to suggest that anyone read the Cook book, at all. Although she, too, fails to provide notes per se, Ms. Pelonero at least cites, in her text, on most occasions, what source material she is using (e.g., trial transcript, police interview, newspaper article, her own interview) to reconstruct and analyze the crime, whereas Mr. Cook rarely does his reader that courtesy. Her book is far more thorough, and far more material, than the Cook book, which is about half as long, despite its robust use of historical filler and politically correct moralizing. Until something else comes along, hers is the definitive work on the crime, and on Mr. Moseley's criminal record at large.

The other book that I just finished, this afternoon, is taken from the aforementioned police memoir that publicly outed Kitty Genovese as a lesbian, thirty years before her surviving lover came forward publicly. The late Albert A. Seedman's co-author, writer Peter Hellman, took the chapter on the Genovese murder from the former's memoir "Chief!" (1974), added a new introduction and an epilogue, and republished it as "Fifty Years after Kitty Genovese" (2014).

The problem with this little book-- along with the fact that it, too, lacks any notes!-- is that the original chapter has been edited by its co-author for this new book presentation. Thus, without getting my hands on the 1974 original, I am unsure how explicit the original material really was about Kitty Genovese's sexual orientation and affiliations, and how much, here, is instead Mr.Hellman's recent reworking and adding of explicit details that were understandably lacking in the 1974 book.

That said, there are some significant differences, between the various versions that I have recently read or re-read, that I am now unable to choose between, absent the source materials on which they are each based. I will say that some of Mr. Cook's claims on Kitty Genovese that I had accepted at face value, I no longer can. Most of all, I can no longer rule out that Winston Moseley did, in fact, murder young Barbara Kralik, on the night of July 20, 1963! Mr. Cook's explanation, which I relied upon, as mentioned in my previous post, was apparently based only upon Mr. Seedman's 1974 memoir, in which he claimed that an unnamed detective had derisively thrown out the suggestion that Winston Moseley had killed Miss Kralik, and Moseley had taken the blame (or credit) for her murder, despite another's earlier confession.

Mr. Seedman dubiously puts forward the theory that Moseley was trying to set up an insanity defense-- which merely begs an obvious question: why did he admit to any of those three murders, when he had been faced with no evidence, at all, that he had committed any of them? The way that Mr. Seedman casually raises and disposes of the Kralik confession, by Winston Moseley, seems to be nothing more or less than trying to support the conviction of her boyfriend for the crime, during his second trial.

I am no longer convinced that the right defendant was tried and convicted for Barbara Kralik's murder. A false confession made by Winston Moseley would have been completely out of character for him from the rest of his police interrogation, the March day that he was arrested for simple burglary, yet ended up confessing to a slew of more serious crimes, including three murders-- with only the Kralik murder's being disputed, either then or now, by the New York authorities!

By the way, one of the people thanked by Ms. Pelonero in her book is her close friend, Mr. de May-- the Father of the Kitty Genovese School of Revisionists!

Donald Westlake wrote a wonderful comic novel, Up Your Banners, in the late 1960s that was dedicated "To David Susskind if he ever finds it." It's about an interracial romance between a white bread pale penis person and a street smart but educated black school teacher.

My tattered paperback copy has a blurb about "Soon to be a major motion picture" but clearly the tides of political correctness washed away any hope of this story ever making the big screen.

It's a love story that ends well (it is a comedy) with the two principals falling in love and turning their backs on the ginned up controversy that brought them together as adversaries. They walk away from the "larger" issues to which they are expected to sacrifice their personal happiness. It's a refreshingly libertarian message. The male character (Oliver but self nicknamed Matt) overcomes Leona's reluctance to "desert" by telling her that "desertion isn't a moral issue for conscripts." That was a Vietnam era reflex I guess, and a better line might well have been "escape isn't a moral issue for hostages."

If I were teaching at any level it would be required reading just to watch heads spins as they tried to wrap their propagandized and closed little minds around the percipient message by this "minor" writer of crime caper novels nearly a half century ago.

There's more wisdom and insight in this lost and forgotten book than the sum total of stultifying formulaic and utterly predictable bloviations of the high minded leftist and racial grievance industry.

Look for it, it will make you laugh, make you smile, and then leave you shaking your head at how clearly some people saw the train wreck while it was just a gleam in the eye of the social justice crowd.

Steven, glad you liked it (rereading it now), but boy did you miss the point. You’re just contributing to the problem here. Westlake shows a lot of respect for people who work for social justice, and to better their communities. He just wants people to see each other as individuals first, members of groups second. And your response to this is to write off a whole section of humanity as too stupid to be worth listening to? You’ve got no business accusing anyone else of ‘bloviating’–what do you think you’re doing, apparently on a very regular basis?

And how the hell you got the idea Donald Westlake is considered a ‘minor’ writer is beyond me. He may not have won a Nobel Prize or anything, and it’s true a lot of people think of him as the comic caper guy, but maybe you heard of a little book called “The Ax”? Got made into a movie by Costa Gavras. A better indictment of the way corporate culture (something he hated with all his soul) forces people down to the lowest moral common denominator, nobody ever wrote. And before you assume he’s a fellow Libertarian, maybe you should try reading a book called “Anarchaos”–about a planet where government doesn’t exist, and the corporations hold all the power. I wouldn’t call him a leftist, he sure as hell wasn’t PC, but he wasn’t one of yours, either. He laughed at all of us.

This book deserves more readers, but it’s not in any specific genre, and is hard to market.

The movie didn’t get made, according to Westlake himself, for the reason most of his books sold to Hollywood never got made. Development hell. Political correctness had nothing to do with it. Geez, Bill Cosby was going to star in a movie based on another of his books–and the character in that book was not black. In retrospect, maybe just as well that one didn’t happen either.

    “Mea maxima culpa!!!”

Having just read, in the past several days, two more books on the Kitty Genovese case, I need to revise my judgments, supra.

First, I read Catherine Pelonero’s “Kitty Genovese” (yes, the same generic main title as Mr. Cook’s take on the case!)– and it is so far superior to Mr. Cook’s effort that I would hesitate even to suggest that anyone read the Cook book, at all. Moseley’s criminal record at large.

The other book that I just finished, this afternoon, is taken from the aforementioned police memoir that publicly outed Kitty Genovese as a lesbian, thirty years before her surviving lover came forward publicly. The late Albert A. Seedman’s co-author, writer Peter Hellman, took the chapter on the Genovese murder from the former’s memoir “Chief!” (1974), added a new introduction and an epilogue, and republished it as “Fifty Years after Kitty Genovese” (2014).

The problem with this little book– along with the fact that it, too, lacks any notes!– is that the original chapter has been edited by its co-author for this new book presentation. Thus, without getting my hands on the 1974 original, I am unsure how explicit the original material really was about Kitty Genovese’s sexual orientation and affiliations, and how much, here, is instead Mr.Hellman’s recent reworking and adding of explicit details that were understandably lacking in the 1974 book.

That said, there are some significant differences, between the various versions that I have recently read or re-read, that I am now unable to choose between, absent the source materials on which they are each based. I will say that some of Mr. Cook’s claims on Kitty Genovese that I had accepted at face value, I no longer can. Most of all, I can no longer rule out that Winston Moseley did, in fact, murder young Barbara Kralik, on the night of July 20, 1963! Mr. Cook’s explanation, which I relied upon, as mentioned in my previous post, was apparently based only upon Mr. Seedman’s 1974 memoir, in which he claimed that an unnamed detective had derisively thrown out the suggestion that Winston Moseley had killed Miss Kralik, and Moseley had taken the blame (or credit) for her murder, despite another’s earlier confession.

Mr. Seedman dubiously puts forward the theory that Moseley was trying to set up an insanity defense– which merely begs an obvious question: why did he admit to any of those three murders, when he had been faced with no evidence, at all, that he had committed any of them? The way that Mr. Seedman casually raises and disposes of the Kralik confession, by Winston Moseley, seems to be nothing more or less than trying to support the conviction of her boyfriend for the crime, during his second trial.

I am no longer convinced that the right defendant was tried and convicted for Barbara Kralik’s murder. A false confession made by Winston Moseley would have been completely out of character for him from the rest of his police interrogation, the March day that he was arrested for simple burglary, yet ended up confessing to a slew of more serious crimes, including three murders– with only the Kralik murder’s being disputed, either then or now, by the New York authorities!

By the way, one of the people thanked by Ms. Pelonero in her book is her close friend, Mr. de May– the Father of the Kitty Genovese School of Revisionists!

  184. Alan Moore’s “Watchmen” includes a retelling of the Genovese murder. That’s where I first heard the story.
