From the New York Times, proof that the late Tom Wolfe will never fade from relevance in America:

Woman Who Tackled Black Teenager at SoHo Hotel Is Arrested

By Mihir Zaveri
Jan. 7, 2021

For more than a week, the authorities in New York City have faced mounting public pressure to arrest a woman caught on video tackling a Black teenager in the lobby of a boutique hotel in SoHo after falsely accusing him of stealing her cellphone.

Now, detectives are traveling to California to interview the woman, the police said on Thursday — an unusual step often reserved for crimes that are violent or high profile.

It was not yet clear if that meant the woman, identified by her lawyer as Miya Ponsetto, 22, would face any charges in connection with the Dec. 26 incident. …

The episode was yet another instance of Black people being confronted with baseless accusations while going about their daily lives. It has drawn comparisons to an incident in May when a white woman called 911 to falsely claim that a Black bird-watcher in Central Park was threatening her life.

The video was taken and posted on social media by Keyon Harrold, a prominent jazz musician, who was staying at the Arlo hotel with his 14-year-old son, Keyon Harrold, Jr.

In the video, Ms. Ponsetto can be seen confronting Mr. Harrold and his son after they walk into the hotel lobby, insisting without evidence that Keyon Jr. has her cellphone. Ms. Ponsetto can be seen asking a hotel manager to help her, after which the manager identifies himself and asks Keyon Jr. to produce a cellphone, in an apparent attempt to verify Ms. Ponsetto’s claim.

Surveillance footage released by the police last week shows Ms. Ponsetto running after Keyon Jr. and tackling him. Ms. Ponsetto was trying to rummage through Keyon Jr.’s pockets, Mr. Harrold said.

Mr. Harrold said he was told by the hotel that an Uber driver found Ms. Ponsetto’s phone later in the day, and she picked it up from the hotel.

Ms. Ponsetto has been the subject of public scrutiny and speculation about possible criminal charges since the video emerged. According to public records, she faces unrelated criminal charges in California, including a lewd conduct charge in Los Angeles County involving an incident in February and a driving while intoxicated charge in Ventura County following an incident in October.

Prosecutors in California did not immediately provide more details.

In an interview on Wednesday, Ms. Ponsetto’s lawyer, Sharen H. Ghatan, confirmed Ms. Ponsetto was the woman in the Arlo hotel video. She said Ms. Ponsetto regretted her actions and was seeking to apologize in person to Mr. Harrold and his family. As of Thursday morning, the police had not contacted Ms. Ponsetto, Ms. Ghatan said.

Ms. Ghatan said Ms. Ponsetto was not targeting Mr. Harrold or his son because of their race. She is of Puerto Rican and Vietnamese descent and does not identify as white, Ms. Ghatan said.

“She’s not trying to make any racial statement,” Ms. Ghatan said. “She’s a female herself of mixed cultural descent. She’s not some blond-haired, blue eyed privileged white lady.”

A fascinating sentence.

“She literally just wanted to get her phone back.” …

Mr. Harrold said Ms. Ponsetto’s actions demanded more than an apology. He said that both her behavior and the hotel manager’s actions reflected a systemic problem where Black people — and Black teenagers in particular — are seen as threats or outsiders.

Mr. Harrold described his son as innocent and impressionable — “an aspiring music producer, drummer, artist, who loves being around his friends.” But, he said, he is too often not seen that way. “He’s made out to be criminal. He’s made out to be a threat. That’s the thing that needs to change.”

The Police Department has said that they were not treating the confrontation as a “bias incident.” But it has drawn widespread attention as a striking example of racial profiling.

Joseph L. Giacalone, a retired New York City police sergeant and an adjunct professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said that the pressure from the public on the Police Department “is just immense here,” particularly given the recent protests against systemic racism following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

He said that it was a rarity for detectives to travel across the country for anything other than murder or cold case investigations. …

At a separate news conference, the Rev. Al Sharpton and civil rights lawyer Benjamin Crump, who is representing Mr. Harrold, called on prosecutors and the police to bring charges.

So Rev. Bacon from Bonfire of the Vanities puts in an appearance.

“This has larger implications,” Mr. Crump said. “It was Emmett Till who was falsely accused and racially profiled that led to him being killed.”

MSM-Speak for “We at the MSM have decided to make this a cause célèbre.”

PS: The woman insists that she’s Puerto Rican, not white–emphatically not white–therefore she has rights which must be respected. The MSM have decided that she’s white, though.

    So check yourselves, fellow anti-racists!

  6. Blonde and blue eyed Whites have no rights whatsoever. But black rights must trump the rights of sort of mostly white looking people.

I also thought that most crimes are decriminalized. Like shoplifting less than 800 dollars worth of merchandise. Unless you are white, or almost white.

If you think that white minorities have privileged minority rights, look no further than South Africa. Whites are, and will forever be, pariahs, the rightless underclass.

But other higher IQ low melanin people, or those with German sounding names, watch out. You might become “honorary” Whites, for the purpose of being discriminated against and mercilessly persecuted. George Zimmerman learned that painful lesson

Ms. Ghatan said Ms. Ponsetto was not targeting Mr. Harrold or his son because of their race. She is of Puerto Rican and Vietnamese descent and does not identify as white, Ms. Ghatan said.

I’m afraid, dear lady, that, in this particular instance, it’s all about how the MSM decides to identify your client…..And calling her a White woman is politically useful….

Here, let this POC enlighten you on the new racial hierarchy:

Dear Miya Ponsetto, You Can Be Latinx & Still Be A Karen

Miya Ponsetto, the white woman dubbed as “SoHo Karen” on social media, was forcibly arrested in California yesterday. Her arrest comes after she racially profiled and assaulted 14-year-old Keyon Harrold Jr., son of Grammy award-winning jazz musician Keyon Harrold, in a New York City hotel lobby on December 26. According to a spokesperson for the Ventura County Sheriff, who worked in conjunction with the New York City Police Department, Ponsetto was confronted at a traffic stop and pulled from her vehicle when she refused to get out.

But even with the lingering threat of police involvement before her arrest, Ponsetto wasn’t afraid to use her whiteness as a weapon again — this time, sheltering it with her Latinidad. In a video that circulated on January 2, a reporter caught Ponsetto exiting a Mcdonald’s in California and asked her a few questions surrounding the assault. “Are you worried that the police are looking for you,” the reporter asked. “Are you concerned about the warrant for the arrest? Why did you do it? [Harrold] ‘s young.” With an unworried expression on her face, Ponsetto turned towards the camera and quickly interjected. “I’m actually 22, so I don’t know what the problem is here — and I’m also Puerto Rican, so thank you,” Ponsetto claimed.

Yet, the problem is clear. Being a white Latina does not exempt you from being racist just because Latinidad falls under the “POC” umbrella term. Ponsetto’s assumption that identifying as Puerto Rican justifies her actions is invalid because Latinx is not a race. You can be Latinx and still be a Karen. Let it be known that Harrold Jr. also is of Puerto Rican descent. At the base, white Latinas like Miya Ponsetto benefit from white privilege, yet they’ll use this privilege to choose when they can or cannot demonize Black people in the white spaces that accept them as one of their own. Then, they’ll use this same Latinx identity and exploit the oppression of other Latinx people to defend their racist actions. But if an officer arrived at the scene at the time of the incident, they wouldn’t see two Puerto Ricans: they’d see one white woman accusing one Black young man — and historically, we know how that story goes.

Let’s not forget the deep-seated racism in Latin American cultures that stems from a long history of colonization, assimilation, and the preservation of whiteness that remains ingrained in its people today. Ponsetto weaponized her Puerto Rican ethnicity as an attempt to insinuate that she does not have the power to racially profile a Black teenager. “How is one girl accusing a guy about a phone a crime? What is the deeper story here?” Ponsetto asked Gayle King on CBS This Morning hours before getting arrested — questioning how her actions were racist. According to King, Ponsetto insisted that it’s not racial profiling during the interview. This is similar to when George Zimmerman, a white man, shot and killed Trayvon Martin, a Black teen, and Zimmerman and his family used his Peruvian heritage to imply that Martin’s murder was not racially motivated.

David Freiheit made exactly this point– deescalate– with the additional note that this woman is clearly deranged. The father and son had no legal obligation to show her (and the manager) his phone, but it once would have been taken for granted that they’d have had a social obligation to do so.

One problem with diversity is that people can recognize mental breakdown in their own tribe, but often have no clue to recognize it in others. Or other dangers or quirks– as with Miss Cooper not picking up the (what sounds like obvious) gayness of Mr Cooper a hundred blocks uptown.

Another lesson to take from this incident is that Puerto Rican independence cannot come too soon. Note that no pilipina would have done this, at least here. We can pick and choose among them.

No, it was about honour. They felt their son or group or their tribes honour and their identity was besmirched by another and thus took insult and decided to hit back because they felt entitled to do so.

Middle class white people don’t understand this because they don’t have a chip on their shoulder about being seen as criminals. This guy was quite successful and so felt even more offended, couple this with it being about his child and things get ugly.

But the point remains, welcome to diversityland.

What the girl should have said is ‘Sorry, I think you maybe took my phone by mistake.’ but that had the risk of the guy saying ‘No, I haven’t picked up any phones’ without proving anything.

If the kid or father had been on their own each would have handled it without violence but the father felt deeply angry over his son being accused.

But really ‘Karen’ is a term that has been used not to refer to (White or ‘white-ish’) women who are disagreeable in general but when they generally aren’t but decide to be assertive or just not unassertive in a particular situation and overshoot. I’m surprised feminists haven’t realised this yet but modern feminism is just CRT for women.

The girl basically probably was all CRT compliant but thought ‘But sometimes those black guys do steal phones and I’m not going to let him just get away with it! I have to stand up for myself. Stop thinking, he’s getting away!’ And she overshot.

We’re getting closer to a partitioning of the United States. It’s unfortunate the boomers have done this. But it’s unavoidable at this point. I suspect most readers intuitively understand this.

One thing I have noticed is that boomers — always in Blue Cities — scoff at the idea of a civil war. Meanwhile, they were the ones who were most unnerved by the Capitol riot. There were probably 15 minutes in the riot where every Blue City boomer, who previously laughed at a Civil War, also seriously thought, “Is this the beginning of a Civil War? Oh my God, what about my 401k?!”

Also, it cracks me up when coastal Blue City dwellers refer to Red States as flyover country. Okay, so in a shooting war, Red States will shut down their airspace. No more flyover country. Now it’s the Panama Canal for them.

Within a decade, we will probably be in a civil war, similar to the Spanish experience. It will be disastrous for the country, but several Coastal Blue cities will be destroyed. Based on geography, they can be easily isolated and simply starved out. The Blue city economic and institutional superiority can’t overcome basic geographic realities.

PS: The woman insists that she’s Puerto Rican

How many white ladies are going to chase down and tackle a black teenager twice their size to get a cell phone. She’s definitely Puerto Rican.

But on a more serious note, the fact that our legal system is now also run by the leftist media is yet another reason why our institutions are undeserving of legitimacy or respect.

The examples of prosecutorial double standards are ubiquitous. General Flynn is set up and framed for talking with his foreign counterparts; whereas Biden’s cabinet is openly doing the same thing right now. Trump is impeached for requesting an investigation of Biden’s corruption; whereas Biden actually taking bribes from Ukraine can’t even be reported. The FBI and CIA frame Trump for fake Russia collusion; whereas they help Hillary destroy evidence by smashing her Blackberries with hammers. Kyle Rittenhouse is prosecuted for defending himself; whereas the rioting felon with an illegal gun who was trying to kill him isn’t charged with anything. The BLM rioters who are on video stealing TVs and jewelry are not charged and anyone who steals less than $950 of stuff can’t even be arrested by law in CA or Wash; whereas a guy who borrowed Queen Nancy’s podium is arrested and prosecuted. The woman who ran fake ballots through the vote counting machine multiple times on video in Atlanta isn’t even questioned; whereas 15 FBI agents are dispatched to look at the garage pull-rope that Bubba Wallace reported as a hate crime. Roger Stone was convicted for some B.S. process infraction that I can’t even remember; whereas the New York Times can steal and publish the President’s personal tax records without even being asked about it. The cops who happened to be there when George Floyd OD’d on fentanyl are in jail on bogus murder charges; whereas the cop who murdered unarmed Ashli Babbitt in cold blood hasn’t been arrested, is being hidden from the public, and will inevitably be let off after a secret rigged “investigation.”

The examples are endless. The corruption of the legal system is perhaps the most corrosive thing the left has done to America in the last four years.

Fifty years ago any attempt at statehood would provoke violent and lethal resistance among an influential and feared minority in Puerto Rico and also NYC and Chicago. Thirty years ago much less so, in fact, in the late 90s’ there was a status vote with five (5) political options and the last, a none of the above choice received a plurality. After Huricane Maria, September 2017, US funds became even more significant and supporting to the dependent local economy. With that any reluctance toward statehood subsided and the small minority movement favoring independence became even smaller and its’ spirit dissipated.

While I have a residual fondness for many of the residents of Borinquen, especially those unburdened by moral contamination from time spent in Nueva Jork, I am nonetheless as fervent an Independista as one is likely to encounter, as were virtually all of us aboard WLB-399 and Aids to Navigation Team PR, some of the locals excepted. Perhaps we should also do as the Portagee did upon departing Africa, and dismantle everything we built on la isla bonita since 1898.

Regarding terrorism from that rock, given my experiences with them when armed, including hearing the occasional round impacting the structure of the rear range/leading light in “Catan-yo” atop which I was perched repairing the lantern, and later as Master of a big haze gray vessel upon whom was foisted a dozen of the PRNG’s Guardian Mariners” for OIF*, I believe I safely can state that the safest place to be when their average combatant is at work is whatever spot at which they are aiming. YMMV; they did draw blood at Sabana Seca and in the Capital (and Capitol). They did, however, at least in the bomb crazy seventies, seem at least as competent in bombings as did the sainted Obama’s (pbuh) political mentors in the Weather Underground, so there’s that…

    * There is a subset of my fellows who hold me responsible for their presence aboard at all. Being home ported but a short drive from the Joint Forces Staff College I was from time to time tasked with representing GOCO (gummint owned, contractor operated) vessels to TRANSCOM and such entities. During the lead up to the 2003 war my Chief Mate and I attended a meeting focused upon force protection requirements, and presented our opinions as to what was needed, said opinions the product of extensive input from other masters and from shore based subject matter experts. To say that said opinions elicited considerable fear and loathing would be the most extreme of understatement. A near torrent of foam and spittle cannonaded my way from a phalanx of civil service types, accusing me of single handedly trying to bankrupt the government, etc. In a weak, exasperated moment I blurted out that, “Maybe they could get the crips or bloods to put in the low bid!”, which at least drew a few suppressed snickers from some of the uniformed present. While that did not come to pass, it is widely regarded among my peers that they got as close as they could get away with, and I seeded their crania with the thought.

Now, one of my peers, a most able sort of a seaman (his unmistakable countenance is still featured on some of those “real life” teevee shows about aspects of the profession), but also a gentleman who oft appeared very much like an escaped mental patient (at an industry soiree we both attended, a cat slid up to me, handed me his business card, and said to me, sotto voce, that he could help my friend. Upon later examination of the card, it was from a shrink. In any event, that great captain was the only one among my group of skippers to speak well of the Guardians, but then most refused to speak about them at all, fearing for their jobs and pensions. While the rest of us voyaged repeatedly to and from Kuwait, competent but crazy looking drifted off our dear ally Turkey, lacking permission to enter, with an ever surlier and more truculent crew, whom he kept under his thumb by employing his GMs as a sort of praetorian guard.

A couple of anecdotes may serve to illustrate our worrisome experiences:

My ship’s team, despite putting all dozen of their heads together, were never able to successfully do the head space and timing on the ship’s Ma Deuces, so the mate, a former Navy QM as well as a former Army mortarman, had to do it for them. So now they have a couple of functioning .50s and itchy trigger thumbs. Their sergeant requests permission to test fire. I call him, the mate, and my ad hoc translator into my office, tell him bilingually that he is only to fire after receiving permission to do so from the bridge. So, of course within five minutes the guns are going and the bridge is wanting to know what the hell is happening. Out I dash, noting the product tanker downrange, and shut down the operation. Hot boolets and low flash point hydrocarbons are a particularly unhappy combination…

After the shooting in Iraq abated, we hauled a Patriot missile battery out of our bestest friend and ally, you know, the one whose military would never, never, ever torpedo, rocket, machine gun, and napalm us, and back to the Vaterland. Granted, yer present day Bundeswehr soldat is a somewhat low T example when compared to his ancestors, but moored at a NATO installation I regarded our security to be improved by the absence of our GMs, thus gave them permission to go ashore. Not so long thereafter the visiting Sealift Command rep was barking at me about letting them go, so my long suffering mate was despatched to the nearest biertsubes and whorehouses to retrieve them, which was achieved in good time if in not such good order. Eventually the drunker ones were put to bed and the sober on watch. Not long before sailing, a rather spectral and obviously shaken MSC Rep manifested himself at my doorway. sitting him down and opening my safe to obtain a dram of Man Overboard Remedy, I was eventually able to calm him sufficiently for him to speak. Seems he was nearly shot at the gangway by the GMs, whether through malice or incompetence I cannot say. Later he revealed that the bridge wing of the last GM guarded vessel he boarded had a fresh set of .223 holes where one of them had had some muscle twitch whilst sleep standing his watch. Good times!

As stated before, your mileage regarding the martial capabilities of our Puerto Rican fellow citizens may indeed vary; I’ve know more than a few non-islanders who have fought alongside them in our various wars of the last century, and who hold their bravery and ability in high esteem. Apparently when the Navy requests manpower from the Army, what arrives is rather more likely to be F Troop than Delta Force…

Then again, I’ve had nil exposure to Puerto Ricans. What have I been missing?

Crazy, but suicidally brave, on occasion. NAMs are underrepresented in the combat arms (i.e. the point of the spear, vs things like transportation and other non-combat chores that still require armed men, just in case, but don’t generally come under attack), because their average IQ of 84 is a full 15 points lower than the average American IQ of ~100. Why do the combat arms need smarter men? Because small unit engagements require their members to improvise in response to enemy moves at the spur of the moment.

Anyhow, Puerto Ricans are about 1% of the US population. They were just over 1% of the Medals of Honor awarded during the Vietnam War – 3 out of 235, before Clinton inflated the total by adding 2 more as a sop to Puerto Rico, and for PC reasons. Puerto Ricans were likely much less than 1% of the combat arms, given their cognitive deficiencies in aggregate. And yet they did not underperform their non-Puerto Rican peers.

Emmett Till was not accused of anything by a white woman, she did not tell anyone out of fear of what would happen to her husband for harming Till. It was local black people who told the woman’s husband when he got back from a trucking job days later. Till was in line to lose a few teeth, but instead of being contrite–or appearing to be–he was defiant. One tough black 14 year old (who looked like an adult) Till was authentic to the end; not sincerely or falsely apologizing. He was too much of a man for his brainpower. And he he died for it.

Till was not “falsely accused” because the wife was the subject of some unseemly behavior from Till, and he was so public (loudly cat calling her as he was being driven out of town by his panicked cousins) about it she could not deny anything culturally untoward had happened.

“Falsely” does not mean wrongly, it means means deceitfully. The girl may have been committing calumny (knowingly accusing a person of a crime while knowing they are innocent of it) but we are not mind readers. She can be said without qualification to have at least “mistakenly accused”, and she committed an assault.

She was travelling to a strange city (like Till), and visiting her father, which is always an emotional experience for any girl. This particular one has some serious impulse control problems, but tells the truth as she imperfectly sees it irrespective of the consequences as shown by her TV interview. Miya Ponsetto is the Emmett Till in all this.

Blond hair is fairly common among children but it’s fairly rare among adults except those of Nordic descent. Being white is the now the worst thing you can be politically but I’m not so sure about the dating market, so I don’t know whether there will be fewer bleached blondes in the future or not.

but tells the truth as she imperfectly sees it irrespective of the consequences as shown by her TV interview.

This is damning with faint praise. Speaking only the truth is an admirable character trait but sometimes you gotta know when to shut up. I saw the TV interview and the girl is incredibly stupid – Idiocracy level stupid. Whatever genes she inherited in her ethnic soup, they were the stupid ones.

The first rule of holes is to stop digging but she was out there on national TV with a big shovel, digging as fast as she could and completely oblivious to the consequences. Apparently her lawyer had coached her in advance on exactly what to say in order to increase the sympathy of the public and therefore her chances of not being sentenced to a long prison term – that was supposed to be the whole point of going on TV (I’m so sorry. I regret this mistake, etc.) . But when the red light came on the camera she completely ignored her coaching and went off the reservation. And she is the kind of stupid person who is too stupid to know that she is stupid, which is the worst kind of stupid.

Ms Ponsetto’s lawyer is astoundingly incompetent and an incredible idiot who will never be hired for a high profile case again. The TV interviewer asked all kinds of questions of Ponsetto that a prosecutor would never be permitted to ask in cross examination, even in the unlikely event Ponsetto goes on the witness stand. Now, Ponsetto’s answers to the TV interviewer’s questions can be played to the court, and the jurors will have seen it anyway.

Moreover, if Ponsetto takes a plea deal, when her lawyer says to the judge that Ponsetto has admitted everything so ought to be given leniency, the prosecutor can now during the sentencing part of the process point to her having lied by denying everything in the interview. Saying anything is storing up grounds for the prosecutors to say the person has made prior inconsistent statements and get a conviction on those grounds alone. It might be thought that Ponsetto has no chance of acquittal, but there is a real possibility of them overcharging her because of the uproar to such an extent that the jury will decline to convict on the stipulated charges because they are too serious.

Hard to believe that in your PR days none of the crew visited El Prado, The Old City Club, The Caribe Club, The Mirimar, The Antilles Club, The Casba, The Riviera, The Hawian Hut, Leto’s Bar, The Miraflores, Elizebeth’s Cocktail Lounge or the Black Angus.
Sad to see “Sailors’ Delght” spurned.

I’m surprised a woman would tackle a male teen and a black male teen no less.

    Seems aggressive.

    Lewd conduct and drunk driving?

    I gotta say I don’t like her.

I would be pissed if a strange woman rummaged through my kid’s pockets and a shady character like her at that.

They are racializing it of course which is a serious problem.

    quite potentially Jewish woman

Lol. Only to people with Jew-on-the-brain disorder.

Sure, there is some chance she is Jewish – it being New York and all – but you have to be pretty far gone to imagine some obvious giveaways (“quite potentially”) in her appearance.

Ms. Ponsetto lives in Piru, CA, which is a farm and factory blue collar town out in the sticks of Ventura County.

    AD,

IIRC, you live in Florida. How open is it? I found a cheap fare to Miami and a rental car for $6 a day so was thinking about a week down there. But I do not want to go if everything is closed and I have to walk around with a mask all the time. I can do that here.

    Whaddya think? Thanks.

Here in the Phoenix area, we used to be free of them, but have seen a huge influx lately. With only the possible exception of Israelis, the are the worst people on earth.

Every Puerto Rican must broadcast to every single passer by that they are, indeed, Puerto Rican with the giant Puerto Rican flag on their t-shirt and the other flags plastered all over everything they own. This narcissistic, cooler-than-you attitude is a classic superiority complex stemming from deep feelings of inadequacy, kind of like the dude with the one-inch dick who drives a giant, jacked up truck and breeds pit bulls. (You’ll notice that Mexicans generally behave this way, because they’ve done some halfway impressive things during their history.)

They think that, since blacks are the coolest people in the universe, if they can only follow the blacks around for long enough with their noses up their asses, that cool will rub off and they will be the second coolest people.

They have even more criminal proclivities than blacks, and are more intelligent, too. They are to blacks what weaponized anthrax is to regular anthrax. Around here, there is not a single racket they’re not involved in, from heroin/fentanyl trafficking to human trafficking to illegal car sales. (And, of course, this is completely ignored by the faggot pigs who’d rather spend their time hassling decent, white citizens for petty bullsht.)

    Does that answer your question?

Pretty sure the MSM and social media mob thought she was Italian when they ran with it. Black people (as well as PRs, Koreans, etc.) do this kind of thing to black people all the time, and they are usually right, like when the little shopkeeper-of-color tried to prevent Michael Brown from walking off with his cigars.
