From Science:
Anthropologists take up arms against ‘race science’
At their annual meeting, biological anthropologists began to build a playbook to thwart racist misuse of research
29 MAR 202411:30 AM ETBYMICHAEL PRICE
Anthropologists are fighting the erroneous notion that humans are divided into a few separate races. They emphasize that human genes and populations show complex patterns of variation and mixing.
LOS ANGELES—Calling someone a Neanderthal was once an insult, meaning you thought of them as a knuckle-dragging brute. “[Neanderthals] have always been used as a mirror for thinking about ourselves … projecting things we don’t like about ourselves onto another group of humans,” said Fernando Villanea, a population geneticist at the University of Colorado Boulder, last week at the annual meeting of the American Association of Biological Anthropologists (AABA) here.
As scientists have learned more about Neanderthals’ cultural sophistication and abilities, though, their public image has gotten a glow-up. For some people, their status was elevated still further by the widely publicized discovery in 2007 that some Neanderthals carried genes suggesting they had red hair and light skin. These ancient inhabitants of Europe and Asia became coded as white, and on social media some people began to claim Neanderthal ancestry as a mark of racial superiority.
Such misuse of science spurred researchers to organize an AABA symposium devoted to combating race science, or the idea that genes and other biological variation can be used to sort humans into races—some superior to others.
Villanea and other symposium speakers urged attendees to engage head-on with potential racist misuse of their data, and to proactively make their work’s conclusions unambiguous. “In the rotten harvest yielded by race science, research has real-world consequences,” said Charles Roseman, an integrative biologist at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign who helped organize the symposium.
When it comes to Neanderthals, claiming a connection as a mark of European pride makes little sense, Villanea said. Recent research suggests Neanderthal ancestry is widely shared among global populations, including some in Africa. What’s more, according to some recent studies, South Asia, not Europe, contains the greatest diversity of Neanderthal genes.
Yet those are nuances in a picture of human variation—which is both what biological anthropologists study and what racists seize on. That’s why trying to present anthropological work “impartially,” letting the data speak for itself, leaves the door open to co-option, said Robin Nelson, a biological anthropologist at Arizona State University. …
Rebecca Sear, an anthropologist at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, is targeting problematic papers. She’s been on a quest to convince journals to retract articles based on widely discredited data from Ulster University psychologist and self-described “scientific racist” Richard Lynn, who died last year. In 2002, Lynn and colleagues published a “national IQ data set” based on IQ tests given in 81 nations, then extrapolated those scores for an additional 104. Among other faults, Lynn’s methods included “wholly” unrepresentative sampling, and cognitive tests of a kind that could not allow valid comparisons between populations, Sear notes. Psychologists and anthropologists alike have roundly described the data as worthless, yet some academic studies still cite them.
Sear contacted the editors or publishers of 12 journals about 14 papers that used Lynn’s data set. Most editors declined to take any action; others added a note of caution to the manuscript but did not retract it. One exception was the Proceedings of the Royal Society B. In what Sear described as a “ray of hope,” editors there responded promptly to her complaint about a June 2010 paper linking the worldwide distribution of parasite prevalence to the cognitive variations Lynn claimed to have mapped. They investigated and retracted the paper earlier this month.
In reality, Lynn and Vanhanen’s pioneering 2002 database has led to a huge growth in more sophisticated databases of national average cognitive test scores. There are now six major databases, including one maintained by the World Bank, with Lynn’s own 2012 database being one of them.
They are all, not surprisingly, improvements over Lynn’s old 2002 compilation. But, mostly they’ve replicated the general patterns Lynn saw in 2002.
… Tina Lasisi, a biological anthropologist at the University of Michigan who acted as discussant for the symposium, welcomed the proposals but warned that simply trying to clarify the technical details of a study isn’t likely to persuade people already convinced of racial differences. “Who are we arguing with when we get into the nitty-gritty?” she said. “Is statistics the right arena for having this fight?”
In other words, we, the Good People, keep losing scientific debates with them, the Bad People.

As Cofnas has pointed out, we continue losing until we get the smart fraction on our side. So how long can they continue to delude themselves?
Some? Which part of Africa?
And- these people are not forensic anthropologists.
Their next crusade will be to get chemists to stop talking about elements and just accept that matter comes in myriad varieties, rejecting any attempt at systematization that would for instance privilege carbon over sodium because it has more valence electrons. Do electrons really even exist?
Just because science is “racist” doesn’t mean it’s inaccurate. Greg Cochran and the late Henry Harpending speculated in their controversial 2009 book The 10,000 Year Explosion that humans and Neanderthals mated, and that modern men acquired useful genes from the interbreeding. That was at least a year or two before the interbreeding was actually confirmed.
Sob…Leave the poor Neaaanderthals alone!…sob…sob.
As an academic subject, shouldn’t we just wonder when the trouble-makers telling the truth get banned? Or at least get static?
A friend in a sociological field told me some years ago that any accurate treatise on race would destroy his career. This despite the fact he worked with medical people who must take race into account to do their jobs. (Kidney disease in the USA is not an equal opportunity killer.)
Isn’t attacking the truth a sign of a decadent system? A portant we are near the end?
I heard that because there’s no exact delineation between where a cloud ends and the sky begins, it’s cloudist to make weather forecasts based on clouds, which are merely a social construct. Weathermen are the new KKK.
Also we’re around 60% water, so we’re basically clouds too.
Strange…. I find this video sad.
Neanderthals were just a variety of human. Their DNA still exists in us, with more abundance in some than others (e.g., my wife more than me, according to 23&Me). She is part Irish, after all.
Robert Silverberg vindicated at last! Hydrogen can be lithium if it feels that it has those two more protons!
Heh. Thanks for highlighting that. Looks like that idea originated in the paper referenced here.

I think this gives some clues.
The paper itself is here.
Identifying and Interpreting Apparent Neanderthal Ancestry in African Individuals
https://www.cell.com/cell/fulltext/S0092-8674(20)30059-3
To answer your question…Surprisingly (to me anyway) it looks like they really meant African rather than some fudge like Egypt or North Africa. Looking at Figure 2A they used five African populations from 1000 Genomes: LWK (Luhya in Webuye, Kenya), GWD (Gambian in Western Division – Mandinka), MSL (Mende in Sierra Leone), YRI (Yoruba in Ibadan, Nigeria), and ESN (Esan in Nigeria) (in declining order of Neanderthal contribution).
P.S. I do find it surprising the backflow made it so deeply into Africa in a significant proportion. I wonder if the results will hold up. I suspect it is not easy to distinguish human from human -> Neanderthal -> human flows.
Negroes lack Neanderthal DNA. However they contain DNA from an archaic hominid species that is not found in other races.
Ionized Sodium Atom : “Help – I’ve lost an electron!”
Other Atom : “Are you sure?”
ISA : “I’m positive!”
In other important racial research, we should create a data base of “race doesn’t matter” advocates (Good People) and scholars and identify the residential Zip codes and racial stats of their neighborhoods.
Then run those findings against a data set of the same local metro area Zips and neighborhoods by total area population and see if actual revealed preferences and histories match the “race doesn’t matter” results.
Any racial clustering versus otherwise totally random and hence irrelevant residential choices.
Just how hypocritical are these people?
OTOH, I find this video an example of masterful acting. How realistically she feigns her emotions.
Race is not a biological reality because there is no gene for race.
There is no gene for homosexuality, so homosexuality is not a biological reality.
Me too. It’s sad, and the situation she’s describing is sad. However, it’s also an example of someone who can’t deal with the external world appropriately.
The link to the six different databases appears to be incorrect. What is the source that lists the six different databases?
That’s right, Neanderthals were humans. It is funny how a lot of scientists eagerly argue that Neanderthals were inferior, non-human, and went extinct.
“So how long can they continue to delude themselves?”
For as long as it remains profitable. Just follow the money. How many academic positions and programs are simply “place holder” slots where the sign above the slot states, “Please insert cash”? When the “funny money” runs dry, and the lights are turned off, what skills will these individuals possess? Hint- They will get a .guv job.
The so-called academic institutions have become the beacons for the “beg, borrow, and steal” formula that tends to develop in the latent stages of capitalism, or cronyism. Profit is the bottom line. Creativity, innovation, and sustainability have been buried.
The Original European Scramble for Africa. Those White Colonists from Bedrock taking African Women as Concubines.
Science Denialism pays. COVID hysteria was another example of scientific denialism. mandating masks for COVID when a few years earlier it was against the law to promote masks for the flu, another respiratory virus which we have known for decades cannot be prevented by wearing masks. The science on masks had been well known until suddenly the authorities realized the benefits of forcing people to cover their faces.
This isn’t science denialism, but rather science fetishism. Science has become a sort of faith in the West. This is referred to as “scientism,” but the term doesn’t fully capture the breadth of this mentality, which is so pervasive that it escapes notice.
Science is a manmade system designed to provide us with facts; a truth-finding engine if you will. I’ve come to see scientific findings as similar to currency, which is what we use to determine value. Just as currency itself has no intrinsic value (aside from its usefulness), science on its own contains no truth.
However, people have come to see science itself as “the truth,” so they insist that science must somehow be enlisted on their side in debates in which the real physical sciences have nothing to say.
So say someone feels that all humans have the same intrinsic value, but he cannot articulate this in a non-material and therefore non-scientific frame. In this case, because all truth is scientifically verifiable (in his belief system), then the science must prove that people are the same where essential human characteristics are concerned. Therefore, while people can differ in accidental attributes such as skin color, stature, hair texture, etc., they must have the same essential attributes such as reason, goodness and so on. So really what we have here is a category error in which people are mixing up scientific findings with notions of a common humanity.
Tina LaSissi sounds like a great name for a drag queen. I wonder, when acting as a discussant, does she represent the discusser or the discussee?
Heaven help us, big bad “racists seize on” evidence that their theory is correct! What’s next, academics selling out to the interests that provide their grant money?
In a related matter, I recently found this thoughtful analysis of “Disparate Impact Thinking” and the negative consequences of the “idea that any racial disparity in any institution is by definition the result of racial discrimination” at https://imprimis.hillsdale.edu/disparate-impact-thinking-is-destroying-our-civilization/
Maybe we should just give up on science and go back to reading stars, tea leaves, and entrails in order to learn what’s what. It may not give very accurate results, but it would be a whole lot safer.
But there are genes for the markers of race, such as skin, hair and eye colour. So it is definitely a biological reality.
We Neanderthals demand reparations !…..give us back our megafauna!…..we need separation from evil Cro-Magnon!
“Isn’t attacking the truth a sign of a decadent system? A portant we are near the end?”
Emotional thinking can’t handle the truth. Mankind’s technological civilization is ending because of it.
It takes abstract logical thinking to maintain it.
TPTB have already declared a “War on Carbon”. Carbon is now a an evil element – the cause of all our problems. Carbon dioxide is now styled as “pollution”. And they are now adding nitrogen to the elemental axis of evil.
“Race is not a biological reality because there is no gene for race.”
So? There isn’t a “gene” for ants but there are genes that act in concert with other genes to create ants.
http://chronicle.uchicago.edu/050922/brainevolution.shtml
In the two Science papers, the researchers looked at variations of microcephalin and ASPM within modern humans. They found evidence that the two genes have continued to evolve. For each gene, one class of variants has arisen recently and has been spreading rapidly because it is favored by selection.
For microcephalin, the new variant class emerged about 37,000 years ago and now shows up in about 70 percent of present-day humans. For ASPM, the new variant class arose about 5,800 years ago and now shows up in approximately 30 percent of today’s humans.
These time windows are extraordinarily short in evolutionary terms, indicating that the new variants were subject to very intense selection pressure that drove up their frequencies in a very brief period of time—both well after the emergence of modern humans about 200,000 years ago. Each variant emerged around the same time as the advent of “cultural” behaviors. The microcephalin variant appears along with the emergence of such traits as art and music, religious practices and sophisticated tool-making techniques, which date back to about 50,000 years ago. The ASPM variant coincides with the oldest-known civilization, Mesopotamia, which dates back to 7000 BC.
“Microcephalin,” the authors wrote in one of the papers, “has continued its trend of adaptive evolution beyond the emergence of anatomically modern humans. If selection indeed acted on a brain-related phenotype, there could be several possibilities, including brain size, cognition, personality, motor control or susceptibility to neurological/psychiatric diseases.”
The insane push to de-carbonize and de-nitrify society will lead to mass starvation. Because I cannot believe TPTB are that stupid, then it must follow that they intend that result, therefore they are evil. (No doubt, however, there are a lot of idiots who support this ridiculous agenda without understanding the almost inevitable result.)
OT – finally, somebody is drawing attention to the plight of the true victims of climate change:
I’m surprised this wasn’t an NPR story. But I’m sure it will be.
On a more ameliorative note, we’ve always labored under bad science.
It took awhile for the germ theory of disease to be accepted. Superstition and wishful thinking have power.
And note the revealed preference here: these woke researchers live in “nice” neighborhoods; send their kids to “good” schools.
Thanks. More on that.

Recovering signals of ghost archaic introgression in African populations
https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.aax5097
One thing I don’t understand is that Figure 1B seems to show the archaic introgression occurring prior to the W Afr – Eur split. Which seems contrary to the text.
P.S. Also see my Neanderthal comment just above yours. The populations in this comment are 4 of the 5 in that comment.
Are you being sarcastic or serious?
We truly have passed the event horizon of the Onion Singularity.
I would like to see that as well. One of the databases is presumably David Becker’s NIQ-dataset. His spreadsheet also contains data from other databases for comparison (probably most of the six?). This 2019 page about version 1.3.3 is informative and addresses some of the common criticisms, but note that he released versions 1.3.4 and 1.3.5 in 2023.

Rather ironic that the human body is 18% carbon.
https://www.news-medical.net/life-sciences/What-Chemical-Elements-are-Found-in-the-Human-Body.aspx
And that is larger than it sounds given that about 60% of the human body is water. From the link above these are the top elements. Functional information at the link.
Oxygen 65%
Carbon 18%
Hydrogen 10% (note hydrogen is about 75% of the mass of the universe)
Nitrogen 3%
Calcium 1.4%
Phosphorus 1.1%
Potassium less than 1%
I can see tenure committees of the future counting not just how many papers you’ve published, but how many you’ve caused to get retracted.
I think he is being sarcastic, making fun of the simplistic explanations that lefties give to explain away scientific facts There is no single gene for race but that doesn’t mean race is unscientific There is no single gene for homosexuality but scientists still study homosexuals
This is similar to how the existence of dusk and dawn disproves the existence of night and day.
OT — “Surely the Men of Oontz will blame the ’24 Joisy quake on DA JOOZ” — my beer duly held, behold:

Pretty cool. I wonder if lithium works the same way. Do you think if two Teslas collided with each other at night on an unlit street and both caught fire, so that each one’s lithium fire was the only light source for the other’s, that they would both appear to have black fire? Or maybe black with some colored streaks from the iron phosphate in those LFP batteries?
The best defense would inho be a book about the logic behind “typologies” in general, implying racial typologies. I, for example, was “converted” after reading a book about “empirical classification”, part of a series of methodological introductions for German sociologists. Had nothing to do with biology, but could easily be transferred to it. (In the mid-19th century philosophers like Popper could use natural science as a model for the social sciences, but how are the mighty fallen …)
Racists are, by definition, morons, so the ‘smart fraction’ will never be on their side.
Ha, ha-anthropogenic climate destabilisation will ‘hit’ EVERYONE. Even YOU, smart-arse.
I.
There are certain words which, when someone uses them, are forms of self-identification, to others of their ilk, saying “I am a liar, a fraud.” One such word is “nuanced” (since 2004). Another is “debunked.” Then there’s “scientific racism,” “disinformation,” and “misinformation.”
Back in early 1990, I did a survey for my magazine, A Different Drummer, on IQ, race, and related topics for a major ms. on the campaign being led at the CUNY/GSUC (my old grad school) and the City College of NY, to terminate the career of my old grad school logic teacher, Michael Levin.
I read The Mismeasure of Man, by Stephen Jay Gould, and an I.Q. debate book pitting Hans-Jürgen Eysenck against Leon Kamin: The Intelligence Controversy, both from 1981.
Since I already had culturist tendencies, I sided with Gould and Kamin against Eysenck. That meant believing them that there was no such thing as I.Q., and that psychometrics was nothing but “scientific racism, i.e., nazism. Oh, and that Cyril Burt was a scientific fraud who had not written anything, and whose “female assistants” were fabulated….
II. And so, while I defended Mike Levin’s first amendment rights, I considered him a White supremacist, and told him so over the phone (circa 1990), which greatly disappointed him.
In 1998, Bill Kristol at the weekly standard, who had just published a brief article by me (as “Robert Berman”) on his father Irving’s alma mater, the City College of NY. Bill then commissioned an article from me on remedial college education. I didn’t say a word about I.Q., and yet he rejected it.
[“Up from CUNY”: https://nicholasstixuncensored.blogspot.com/2018/05/conservatives-are-worse-than-worthless.html%5D
One of his two deputy managing editors, Claudia Winkler, said, “I don’t think Bill liked the tone.”
I reminded Claudia Winkler that I had not submitted my ms. “on spec.” Tone-sensitive Bill Kristol had commissioned it, which meant that he owed me a kill-fee (which Winkler had conveniently forgotten about). She cut me a check for $200, out of the $500 fee, which was fit and proper. (The industry standard was 33%.)
In spring 1997, I aggressively campaigned within the national association of scholars/academic questions to publish what was then the state-of-the-art report on politicized grading, “Making Up the Grade: Notes from the Antiversity.” (The notion that one sends in scholarly mss. blind is a myth.)
Since I was teaching college, I insisted that the nas/aq publish me as “Robert Berman.” nas/aq editor Sanford “Sandy” Pinsker put me under tremendous pressure to use my own name, which would have been professional suicide, but eventually he gave in. (When I walked up to Pinsker at the nas’ April, 1999 national conference, instead of greeting me, he stared daggers at me.)
At said conference, one of the nas/aq poohbahs, Gary Crosby Brasor, announced that they had a speaking slot open at their conference the following month at Assumption College in Worcester, Mass. I immediately campaigned for the slot. (I was working on a book on higher ed.) I sent Brasor related articles (e.g., on “ebonics”). When I spoke with him on the phone, he was very nervous. I suggested that maybe he needed to go with someone else. He suggested I speak with Sandra Stotsky (Losing Our Language). Stotsky cleared me.
In May 1999, I delivered “Remediation, Language Rights, and Progressive Pedagogy,” at Assumption. Again, I said nothing about I.Q. (Although Brasor had sent me a signed letter, which functioned as a contract promising to publish my talk, he welshed.)
Some time in 1999 after May, I determined that Stephen Jay Gould and Leon Kamin were complete frauds. Communists. When Cyril Burt (1883-1971) died, a tenured communist saboteur, Liam Hudson, went to his home and talked his housekeeper into destroying his papers. Hudson and his comrades then announced to the world that Burt was a fraud who had fabricated his research.
It’s true. It’s Science. You can’t debate it.
World ending, gays and trans hit hardest!
Or the existence of the black and white races.
Thanks. My guesses would be (in order).
1. Sarcastic.
2. TDesque.
3. Serious.
I would disagree with “nuanced” in general. Though it can certainly be used that way as in your example.
How do others feel about that? If “nuanced” is in that category I need to rethink how often I use it (three pages of hits for “nuance” in my comments).

Beware the heretic!
Yeah, the late seventies early eighties with Gould and Kamin was the great age of environmentalism. Gould has now been discredited but being an environmentalist this was largely hushed-up. It was all topsy-turvy; his cranial size research was obviously hoaxed and the original cranial size research has withstood the test of time, not the other way around.
Like you I was young and idealistic so like you biased towards Gould and Kamin but even then I was a tad skeptical of Gould because the original cranial size research did take care in minimizing bias and was replicated and I thought Eysenck was providing valid counter-arguments.
Burt’s research has been replicated (in fact, it was replicated by independent researchers at the very beginning) Almost all IQ studies confirm that his numbers are very close to what the real world measures are. Even so there is indeed evidence that Burt was a bit careless with his data and likely reused some of it.
Burt’s detractors said he made up his female assistants. The evidence is still not fully clear (and as time slips on by, will never be fully resolved) but they probably existed and were not made up-some evidence has indeed turned up that they helped Burt and were actual psychologists or psych students. Old UK psychologists recalled working with them. They likely emigrated to Australia or Canada or South Africa, got married and left psychology as women did in that time.
I laughed at Burt making up his assistants in the eighties and then I recall I was shocked when the evidence for their reality was starting to turn up in the nineties.
Eysenck was giant. Among other things, he fought the Freud cult from the very beginning. Along the way, he gathered a lot of environmentalist enemies so now currently he is undergoing the same process that Burt undergone. Even so, unfortunately yes as he aged he became extremely careless in his ability to gather and interpret data which is being used in attempts to destroy even the classic Eysenck of the sixties and seventies.

The existence of orange does not mean red and yellow don’t exist. Saying that men are taller than women does not mean that all men are taller than all women.
Children Should Never Talk to Strangers
In the West, European children are told to never talk to strangers. This means that the West is already genetically finished, because in a true nation, all the citizens are Altruistic and see each other as fellow brothers and sisters, so no one is a stranger, and no one is a danger. In Israel, no child is ever told to not talk to strangers, because every Israeli is a genetic brother and sister of each other.
An important pattern to Notice here is the attack on European (or White) pride and identity. It’s why Jack D takes time to comment repeatedly that Washington and Jefferson held “slaves.” It’s why Twinkie won’t capitalize “white,” writes “Anglo-Saxon” in scare quotes, and makes posts suggesting that Whites have African ancestry. It’s why Corvinus obsessively reprints the Leyenda Negra and its Anglosphere equivalent.
These are all efforts at a stealth genocide.
“In Israel, no child is ever told to not talk to strangers, because every Israeli is a genetic brother and sister of each other.”
I see. And Israeli Palestinians are your brothers too.
This is true.
However, I caution against relying on Greg for any other than opinions in his own lane of study.
We all know what happened when he was made to look the ultimate fool when he fell hook, line and sinker for the Covid Scam – what was he predicting, 6 million deaths in the US alone? Talk about Mr Chicken Little! At that point I abandoned his website as a lost cause.
Of course our host has his own issues there. LOL
Taking a look over there (for the first time in 4 years) I note that his last blog post was Books 2023, which included one entitled “The Big Con”.
Ironic, doncha think?
Not much posting there anymore – perhaps too embarrassed? I would hope so.
No. Israel is a low trust society even among Jews only. Children are told never to talk to unknown people unless presented to them by their caretakers. Adults form gangs and consider the Jews they don’t know as possibly un-Jewish. Fundamentalists are known never to talk outside their group. Even though Israeli Jews view the greater non-Jewish world as vermin, so did the communist party in former Eastern Block countries down upon their own people they governed, which didn’t mean they felt free to talk to anybody within the Party, furthest from it : they never talked un-introduced. A communist party composed of non-believers in communism but justifying their privileges in its name is the best comparison.
Israel is wildly diverse and with a lot of people from low trust societies such as the former USSR. It’s nothing like your imaginary picture.
The places where people trust their children with strangers are high trust societies like Denmark. A few years ago a Danish tourist got arrested in NY because she went into a bar and left her baby in its carriage out on the sidewalk to be away from the smoke and noise. Apparently, this is a completely normal thing to do in Denmark.
Why the scare quotes? They weren’t really slaves or what?
Jewish tradition warns us against worshiping flawless idols. Even the greatest Jewish heroes (Moses, David, Samson, Noah, etc.) are shown as men with character flaws. If you speak about Washington and Jefferson as heroes of liberty without mentioning that they also held other human beings in bondage then you are lying by omission. This doesn’t mean that they are not heroes anymore – that’s idiotic too. But you have to understand the complete picture, warts ‘n all and not some idealized, sanitized version.
Agree but the survival advantage of scientific thought basically lies outside reproductive advantages of the social world of nature.

That baby carriage thing happened to my grandmother in Vancouver in the 1920s. The shopkeeper told her it wasn’t safe.
By the 1950s my mother instructed us never to talk to strangers, also in Vancouver. Both my parents were lawyers and had true crime books around. What I learned was that psychopaths can be anywhere. They’re not very common but they’re dangerous.
Maybe my family were just the cautious type, I don’t know.
Their celebration by the great and the good should have been the only clue you needed to know that they were frauds. Wishful thinking has always been their approach to race.
I smelled a rat from the beginning regarding SJG, particularly his attacks on Wilson.
To me it was obvious that there were racial differences in behavior patterns and intelligence that were profound. To attribute ALL of these differences to culture or racism seemed absurd.
I remember reading something from Dr. Levin years ago on race that I thought was brilliant. I think he subsequently retracted his views under pressure?
I’m really not worried.
