From The Atlantic:

American Blackout

A tour of the solar eclipse’s path reveals a nation that fought to maintain a different sort of totality.

ALICE RISTROPH AUG 18, 2017

… On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will arrive mid-morning on the coast of Oregon. The moon’s shadow will be about 70 miles wide, and it will race across the country faster than the speed of sound, exiting the eastern seaboard shortly before 3 p.m. local time. It has been dubbed the Great American Eclipse, and along most of its path, there live almost no black people. …

ALICE RISTROPH is a professor at Brooklyn Law School.

The comments are significantly more intelligent than the lengthy article.

If there is hope, it lies in the Comments.

It is the unanimous, if seldom wholly articulated, opinion of media types living in Brooklyn on checks from Nana that Flyover America must do penance for its racism by taking in most of the black people now living in more woke places such as, well, Brooklyn.

The media people gentrifying Bed-Stuy will be sorry to see their vibrant black neighbors depart, but they are willing to make that sacrifice to bring the blessings of diversity to those vile racists in the heartland.

Screenshot 2017-08-20 03.55.30America’s elites, such as this Harvard Law School visiting professor, really, really, really resent blacks for taking up so much space in potentially desirable real estate in Washington DC, Harlem, the South lakefront of Chicago, South-Central Los Angeles, Oakland, and so forth.

These would be extremely convenient places for upscale urbanites to live if not for black crime. For example, say you work in publishing at Penguin Random House near 57th Street and Broadway. Well, 125th Street in Harlem is only 18 minutes away by subway. Heck, you could walk home in 73 minutes through glorious Central Park.

But they can never come out and say this or even admit it to themselves.

So they are constantly working themselves up into a fury at white people in, say, rural Nebraska under the path of the eclipse for not taking their fair share of blacks.

Of course, there’s zero evidence that African-Americans want to move to rural Nebraska.

Why would they?

But that just makes our intellectuals even angrier and more lunatic.

Update. From an Anonymous commenter:

The SPLC should go to court and stop this eclipse! But they need more money money to do it. Give Now!

Commenter Achilles observes:

Wait, there are blacks in Kansas City, St. Louis, Nashville and Charleston?

Oops, we need to flip the meme!

No it’s true, she’s right, there are no black people in St. Louis.

They were all killed by racist cops in 2014.

The eclipse starts off the coast of Africa and travels west, so it does miss the majority of persons of African descent.

According to this map, blacks live along the South East Coast, basically where the eclipse enters the US mainland. But I am missing the point that the author wants to write about race, and will use anything as a hook.

    This lady is UBER-WOKE:

From Kansas, the eclipse goes to Missouri, still mostly bypassing black people, though now much more improbably. About a third of Kansas City, Missouri, is black, but most of the city lies just south of the path of totality. To get the full show, eclipse chasers should go north to St. Joseph, almost 90 percent white and about 6 percent black, the place where Jesse James died and where Marshall Mathers, a.k.a. Eminem, was born. The real Slim Shady, that is, who left St. Joe and took his angry and wry lyricism—“Y’all act like you never seen a white person before”—to the world of hip-hop, where Rolling Stone would declare him king. He was the top-selling American artist of 2000–2010 and the first rapper to win an Academy Award.

It is more absurd than this. In the article she acknowledges that Kansas City and St. Louis are in the path. However she says that the total eclipse will be seen only in the white parts of each city.

How many universities are in the path of this eclipse? Though she doesn't mention them, quite a few.

I’ll be going to watch the eclipse in Carbondale, IL, which is one of the best places in the country to get a view of it. It’s also the city referred to as [Undisclosed] in David Wong’s novel John Dies At The End.

It must have been written before he went full SJW, because it contained a line I thought was pretty funny. They were talking about this dimensional portal:

North said, “No, the only ones who can travel back and forth are the dark men.”

John said, “Blacks? Is that why there aren’t any in [Undisclosed]? They get sucked in?”

I guess there wasn’t much of a point to that, but I figured the confluence of events that would let me share that anecdote seemed unlikely to ever happen again.

Alice Ristroph is a sharp SJW Harvard Law Professor.

Reading her abstracts, one of her concerns is the fact that blacks have different responses to legitimate police orders, resulting in racially-different rates of violent police responses with suspect encounters. Her solution is to redefine acceptable (ostensibly non-violent) resistance to police commands so as to lower the rate of violent police responses to blacks ignoring legitimate police commands.

So, I guess it's a small leap to writing about racial differences in opportunities to encounter a complete eclipse.

Keep in mind that it's not just the motion of the sun that matters but the motion of the moon and sun both relative to the earth.

    Sigh….you guys are sad

    • Replies: @Jake
As whites are so evil, what with perpetual racism and no welfare for the sacred cow negroes, we tried self-segregation in order to deny ourselves the opportunities to practice our racism.

If no blacks live near us or go to school or work with us, then we cannot harm them with our racism.

Because Black Lives Matter, even more than white lives, all black lives must be saved from ever being around white people and their endless racism.
    , @anon
If so, the inadvertent point was that the descendants of those slaveowners were so good to them that most black people just refused to leave them and go out on their own.

  14. The American West was not the land of chattel slavery—with some brief exceptions, slavery was illegal in Oregon before and after statehood. But among the dreams of the pioneers there was, at least sometimes, a dream of escaping racial strife by escaping black people altogether. As put by Peter Burnett, the architect of one racially exclusionary law in Oregon, the aim was simply to avoid “that most troublesome class of population. We are in a new world, under most favorable circumstances, and we wish to avoid most of those evils that have so afflicted the United States and other countries.”

The shadow will go from NW to SE, anon, as the moon is in a regular "prograde" orbit. That just means that, as seen from high above the N. pole, the moon orbits the earth clockwise, as the earth turns clockwise. The moon appears to move roughly easterly vs. the sun in the heavens. It's path will appear from SW to NE (check me on this part) across the sun's disk, and it's shadow will therefore travel from NW to SE across the earth.

Oh, it's interesting that the time of day of the totality makes totality (for a given distance from the center-line) significantly longer due to the effect of one being 4,000 miles, 1/2 earth's diameter, closer to the moon than when it's near the horizon. That 4K miles / 240 K or so, seems small, but then the fact that these two disks in the sky are so close in size is something kind of miraculous.

Speaking of miracles, I will write later on about something eclipse-related that the cntrl-left has totally forgotten to get mad about, but there's still time - less than 2 days, though: It's about Christopher Columbus's use of an eclipse to save the bacon of his and his remaining crew on Hispaniola during his 4th voyage (I think). It is one hell of a story, and his deception of the natives via settled science might be considered something to get pretty bent-out-of-shape about. I'd even talk off a half-day from tearing down monuments of the Confederacy to write an article, were I one of these sensitive people.

Moving east, the eclipse will pass part of St. Louis, whose overall population is nearly half black. But the black residents are concentrated in the northern half of the metropolitan area, and the total eclipse crosses only the southern half. Eight miles north of the path of totality is Ferguson, where Officer Darren Wilson shot Michael Brown three summers ago. The majority of residents of Ferguson are black, policed by white officers who, like Wilson, live elsewhere. Brown’s death brought pain and protests and efforts to show that Black Lives Matter. It has drawn needed attention to the distribution of state violence by race, but the sad irony is that black lives have always mattered in this country. Since the founding, white people have been arguing about, first, how much a black life matters, three-fifths as much as a white life or something more or less; and second, for whose political benefit those lives will be counted.

The shadow of the moon doesn’t care where it falls or who lives below. And in certain respects, the federal government designed in our Constitution doesn’t care where people live, either. We need the census tallies to determine how many representatives each state sends to the House, but the census is irrelevant to the Senate: Each state gets two senators, whatever its population. This arrangement is the result of another of the many compromises that made the Constitution possible. Of course, we probably don’t need the eclipse to remind us of the Constitution’s different forms of representation. After all, every four years an Electoral College and not the people directly selects the President. Every four years we are reminded that each state gets as many electors as it has members of Congress, a system that magnifies the relative power of voters in less populous states. California has two senators and 53 representatives, giving it 55 electors for 39.25 million people, or one elector for every 713,000 people. Wyoming has two senators and only one representative, three electors for just over half a million people, or one for every 195,000 people.

But the equal power of states was enshrined at a time when states served white people, and never since have states’ rights been a particularly effective mechanism for racial equality. Looking back, the bargains struck to protect the states appear as resolutions to disputes among white people, including disputes about what to do with people who are not white. And looking ahead, we can expect the equal power of the states to exacerbate further the political inequality of individual persons: The farther you live from other people, the more electoral power you wield.

Bob Whitaker's mantra is overall very crude and cringey (it's obviously targeted at the double digit IQ crew), but the "anti-racist is code for anti-white" part is on point. With vanishingly few exceptions (like Bret Weinstein, whose outrageous treatment by American Red Guards proves the rule), anti-racism is fundamentally about exploiting and eventually exterminating whites.

Former slave-holding states are still the home to most of America’s black population. In Kentucky, Tennessee, and eventually South Carolina, the eclipse will finally pass over black Americans. Even here, though, the path of totality seems to mark the legacy of slavery and the persistence of segregation more than any form of inclusion. Kentucky permitted slavery but never seceded and instead tried to remain neutral during the Civil War. “I hope to have God on my side,” Lincoln reportedly said, “but I must have Kentucky.” Cautious, careful, incrementalist, the Emancipation Proclamation declared freedom only for slaves in rebel states and didn’t apply to border states like Kentucky.

    That Lincoln statue's gotta go.....

Nonetheless, the state grew increasingly disenchanted with Lincoln, and it would not ratify the Thirteenth Amendment (which formally abolishes slavery) until 1976

And looking ahead, we can expect the equal power of the states to exacerbate further the political inequality of individual persons: The farther you live from other people, the more electoral power you wield.

See, this is why we need more POC immigrants and refugees. If we wanna totally eclipse Whitey, We gotta fill states like Wyoming with POC ....

The arc of the eclipse is long, and it bends toward Charleston. In South Carolina in the last 12 or 13 minutes of the Great American Eclipse, it will probably pass over more black Americans than it does throughout all of its earlier journey. After Greenville and Columbia, the eclipse goes out where so many slaves once came in: Charleston was the busiest port for the slave trade, receiving about 40 percent of all the African slaves brought into the country. Today, the Old Slave Mart is a museum. Two years ago in Charleston, Dylann Roof chose the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church as his shooting ground, quietly joining a Bible study and then opening fire on the black congregants, killing nine.

It is more absurd than this. In the article she acknowledges that Kansas City and St. Louis are in the path. However she says that the total eclipse will be seen only in the white parts of each city.

Now that sounds pretty raciss in and of itself, don't it? Is she trying to imply that black people are not as interested in science as much as white people? Even worse, is she implying that they figure that totality may be the best time since '14 Ferguson to riot and get on a TV, so will have no time for viewing the eclipse? That's seriously raciss, and she should probably not write on these types of topics again - eclipses, astronomy, geography, white people, black people, people in general. Miss Ristroph should go back to writing cookie recipes and obituaries before she brings the Atlantic a big-ass law suit, or maybe the cntrl-left comes to the main office to pull down whatever statue they have in front of the building (statue of the Atlantic Ocean??)

However she says that the total eclipse will be seen only in the white parts of each city.

Likely because only whitey is looking up....

But I'm only saying that to cover up the nefarious, and not well known, fact of our Illuminated Power: we site our civilizations with reference to eclipse paths. This has been planned out for 10,000 years. Those cities were DELIBERATELY PUT THERE not with reference to, say, rivers for transport or flat hard corridors where rail lines and roads could go.

We put them there for the eclipses, and we have gated the Eclipsey Neighborhoods to keep blacks out.

    Why?

Well, I'll tell you why. We get special powers from all eclipses, but when these total solar dingies happen, each white person downloads from the cosmos DNA patches that give us more of our oppressor imperialist alleles.

That's why whites wanted to go to the moon, you see. To download DNA patches that would make us immortal and omnipotent.

It has nothing to do with the simple mechanical operation of the solar system as set out by physics long ago and constantly evolving.

I am very glad that we have the Left Inquisition catechizing us on reality, otherwise how would people know science is bunk and social science is truth?

For example, say someone sees Professor Ristroph carjacked by a black criminal and taken to an ATM to clean out her bank account, and that someone calls 911.

Under such a system, police would know that Professor Ristroph would not want that crime stopped, because it would contribute to the disproportionate number of black men incarcerated in our country, and police could turn their attention elsewhere.

    American Blackout

    ALICE RISTROPH AUG 18, 2017

… On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will arrive mid-morning on the coast of Oregon. The moon’s shadow will be about 70 miles wide, and it will race across the country faster than the speed of sound, exiting the eastern seaboard shortly before 3 p.m. local time. It has been dubbed the Great American Eclipse, and along its path live many black people.

Just like systemic racism and white privilege eclipse the progress of blacks in American society, so will the Great American Eclipse cast many blacks into darkness during its occurrence.

As whites are so evil, what with perpetual racism and no welfare for the sacred cow negroes, we tried self-segregation in order to deny ourselves the opportunities to practice our racism.

If no blacks live near us or go to school or work with us, then we cannot harm them with our racism.

The bizarre thing to me is that leftisrs are still going crazy over slavery that was abolished 150+ years ago , yet are silent about or actively running interference for and defending slavery that is occurring today in the current year.

of course when you realize the modern day slave centers are : Islamic republic of Mauritania , Islamic republic of Sudan , Islamic republic of Somalia , Libya , Syria , Iraq and the semi autonomous Islamic encalves in Nigeria their motivations start to become clear.

That’s what you get when you have 3 degrees from Harvard. Thank God she’s not a judge.

Writing at a 6th grade level. Sad.

It has been dubbed the Great American Eclipse, and along most of its path, there live almost no black people.

I don't know but, once it gets west of Missouri or so, along most of it path lives almost nobody at all, right?

It's funny when people forget how sparsely populated a lot of this country is, and even funnier when they get mad about it.

I don’t know but, once it gets west of Missouri or so, along most of it path lives almost nobody at all, right?

The shadow will go from NW to SE, anon, as the moon is in a regular “prograde” orbit. That just means that, as seen from high above the N. pole, the moon orbits the earth clockwise, as the earth turns clockwise. The moon appears to move roughly easterly vs. the sun in the heavens. It’s path will appear from SW to NE (check me on this part) across the sun’s disk, and it’s shadow will therefore travel from NW to SE across the earth.

Oh, it’s interesting that the time of day of the totality makes totality (for a given distance from the center-line) significantly longer due to the effect of one being 4,000 miles, 1/2 earth’s diameter, closer to the moon than when it’s near the horizon. That 4K miles / 240 K or so, seems small, but then the fact that these two disks in the sky are so close in size is something kind of miraculous.

Speaking of miracles, I will write later on about something eclipse-related that the cntrl-left has totally forgotten to get mad about, but there’s still time – less than 2 days, though: It’s about Christopher Columbus’s use of an eclipse to save the bacon of his and his remaining crew on Hispaniola during his 4th voyage (I think). It is one hell of a story, and his deception of the natives via settled science might be considered something to get pretty bent-out-of-shape about. I’d even talk off a half-day from tearing down monuments of the Confederacy to write an article, were I one of these sensitive people.

But they can never come out and say this or even admit it to themselves. So they are constantly working themselves up into a fury at white people in, say, rural Nebraska for not having their fair share of blacks.
  59. Here in Jacksonville. FL the maximum point of eclipse will leave the sun 90% eclipsed for a few minutes, which is apparently enough to throw the school system into total chaos, so they are sending the children home early so that they don’t blind themselves by staring into the sun, or fall over in the dark.

Never mind that the sun rises daily and sometimes blinds drivers who have dirty windshields. Never mind that children might potentially damage their eyes by staring at the sun on any day of the year if they are that stupid. Never mind that the sun sets every day and at some point is 90% obscured, or that it is pitch dark outside as I write this due to our view of the sun being obscured by the rotation of the planet earth, which seems to happen about every 24 hours give or take a few nanoseconds.

It is all about teachers packing up and going home a bit early, just like they do any time there is a bad storm 1500 miles away in the Caribbean or a rainy night in Georgia, or any other excuse they can think of.

Her recent work examines laws that regulate state violence, focusing especially on the law’s distribution of risks of physical harm. She has also been studying ways in which the law suppresses, tolerates, or even facilitates various forms of resistance to criminal justice institutions.

I have no idea what any of that means — but I do know in her job/position as an academic and authority figure she influences many young people who, despite their intelligence, lack intellectual maturity and critical thinking skills.

of course when you realize the modern day slave centers are : Islamic republic of Mauritania , Islamic republic of Sudan , Islamic republic of Somalia , Libya , Syria , Iraq and the semi autonomous Islamic encalves in Nigeria their motivations start to become clear.

And as in Oregon, but even more so, the few non-white residents of Idaho and Wyoming are not black—they are mostly Latino, American Indian, and Alaskan

This girl is appallingly stupid. She’s clearly just quoting basically verbatim from the census. Does she really think there are more “Alaskans” in Idaho and Wyoming that black people? How many Eskimos say “sorry guys, I’d love to join the seal hunt this year but I’m moving to Wyoming to shovel horse shit for a living”?

NEW STUDY BACKS THESIS ON WITCHES
By WALTER SULLIVAN, NY Times, Published: August 29, 1982

A new scientific report supports the theory that the 1692 witch trials in Salem, Mass., may have followed the widespread consumption of a poisonous fungus similar to lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD.

Nineteen women and men were hanged as witches after they, or children in their presence, acted as if ''Satan were loosed in Salem,'' according to descriptions by colonists at the time.

A report in the current issue of American Scientist suggests that the aberrant behavior of the adults and children, which included convulsions and hallucinations, probably was brought on by ergot, a fungus that grows on rye in cool, damp weather.

Maybe NBC should call Elon Musk to launch Megyn Kelley into space to interview those who caused the eclipse so that the eclipse can deny it’s racist intent. Here in Jacksonville. FL the maximum point of eclipse will leave the sun 90% eclipsed for a few minutes, which is apparently enough to throw the school system into total chaos, so they are sending the children home early so that they don't blind themselves by staring into the sun, or fall over in the dark.

Perhaps the children ought to stay home on Tuesday too, just to be ultra safe.

    What would the Russians do?

They would probably say that, but taken as a part of a general tendency to close the schools or send children home early for minimal reason, one has to wonder if this is really true, and that these decisions are made on sound legal advice.

It certainly is a sad reflection on what the US has become if millions of parents' workplaces and child care budgets constantly have to adjust to the needs of the school system to avoid liability for one in a billion events like children being injured by hurricanes currently located over a thousand miles away, or harming their eyes by staring at the sun during school hours at a time when the sun is blocked off by the moon?

    http://people.com/human-interest/eye-damage-solar-eclipse-warning-to-others/

It can happen and there are a some recorded cases of people suffering from severe solar retinopathy, but most of them seem to have been druggies who flew too close to the sun while tripping.

Adherents of sun-worshipping religious sects are also victims. (How about that?) In 1988, for example, Italian ophthalmologists treated 66 people for solar retinopathy after a sun-staring ritual.

    https://www.livescience.com/20433-solar-eclipse-blind.html

Certainly people should be advised not to stare at the sun during eclipses or at any other time, and children can be taught to observe an eclipse by using a pinhole camera cut into a piece of cardboard, but closing schools early? Ridiculous.

The thing that this affirmative-action-female Harvard J.D. fails to mention is that black people only comprise a little more than 12% of the US population.

Her painful stretch here to use the path of totality as a tour of American demographics only serves to illustrate this point. Any random slice across the continent would likely yield similar results.

Raisin bread only contains so many raisins, no matter how you slice it, lady.

Propaganda efforts like her essay only serve to further the grossly oversized importance given to a minority.

Alice Ristroph is one smart scientist.

So, I guess it’s a small leap to writing about racial differences in opportunities to encounter a complete eclipse.

    Why?

Well, I’ll tell you why. We get special powers from all eclipses, but when these total solar dingies happen, each white person downloads from the cosmos DNA patches that give us more of our oppressor imperialist alleles.

That’s why whites wanted to go to the moon, you see.

Prof. Wriststrap's thought piece really deserves a whomping, but there is something extremely interesting about her research focus in her bio.

"Her recent work examines laws that regulate state violence, focusing especially on the law’s distribution of risks of physical harm."

A non-academic and non-lawyer, I'm not quite sure what that's all about, or what Prof. Wriststrap's take on it is. But, at first glance, that statement seems to say laws are passed that distribute probabilities of physical harm. To me at least, that speaks to the massive actual consequences for many White folks of our misbegotten civil rights laws.

I ought to have added that Prof. Reststop’s interest in undue, unearned “physical harm” against Whites as a consequence of ill-conceived laws is probably nil, but, well, I guess there’s a theory.

Journalism used to be considered a good job for bibliophile sons of petit bourgeois and prole parents. That's where Mike Royko, Jimmy Breslin and Pete Dexter came from.

Then it got credentialized and you had to have a degree and the correct ideology. Then the Internet blew its business model apart. A few stars at the top, some public media sinecures, and crumbs for everybody else. So now the trade attracts mostly midwit ideologues with affluent parents.

    Midwit! I’m gonna steal that.

We have (been told) that we had structural racism, institutional racism, environmental racism, digital racism........................

    .............now we have..................astronomical racism.....................lunar racism.

    You forgot solar racism.

These a$$holes are relentless, they never stop, they never let go. Even a mindblowing astronomical event involving the earth, sun and moon becomes just another opportunity to lay on the white guilt. Because, y'know, the concerns of 13% of the population are way more important than other 87%, because they're soooo oppressed. And as pointed out, her entire thesis is so blatantly false even a fourth grader can see it. But who cares matter what the actual facts are, there's a narrative to promote, for social and racial justice.

I suppose the liberal readership of the Atlantic just eats this crap up, but I am so sick and tired of it.

Well, that is the thing with lefty revolutions. Everything has to be politicized. It is how they grind you down and undermine your capacity of self-defense, by squaring off their political stamina against yours.

  110. @Steve Sailer
America's elites really, really resent blacks for taking up so much space in desirable real estate in Washington DC, Harlem, South Central Los Angeles, the South lakefront of Chicago, Oakland and so forth. But they can never come out and say this or even admit it to themselves. So they are constantly working themselves up into a fury at white people in, say, rural Nebraska for not having their fair share of blacks.

Same thing in the EU with the Muzzie invasion. Boy are they pissed at the old Eastern Bloc.

Comments on that article are brutal.

Brutal, as in brutal to the writer, or as in brutal to read for say, you or me? I sure don't want to click on it; that's why I ask. Thanks.

    The first one!

  112. We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because the Moon is racist!

    No snow in Africa.

Snow is white and 'racist' and shi*. It avoids black folks.

Btw, should we come up with technology to make snow black?

The snows of Kilimanjaro… E. Hemingway!

  115. Don’t worry Steve, generation M is finally heading to the suburbs which means the big cities will lose tons of jobs and have high crime again. The biggest growth for young adults now is Bee County Texas and Lassen County Ca because its cheaper than the big cities to have kids. They are finally paying SUV’s. This means bye to New York City, Los Angeles, and so forth. I bet in 10 years the Mexican City of Anaheim will attract more business than LA.
