With such a short offseason, I fear the NBA won’t have time to do enough about systemic racism among its referees, who, studies show, call more than 80% of all personal fouls on Black men.

In other news, a recent study finds that NFL referees are so racist that they haven’t called pass interference on a white cornerback since 2003.

And will the 2021 Tokyo Olympics finally deal with the White Privilege that has allowed white finalists in the men’s 100 meter dash to not have a single false start called on them since 1980?

This actually already happened. A group of smug white trustfunders tried to establish their credentials as anti-racists by claiming to have conducted a study showing that most fouls called in the NBA were charged to black men! (I think it was around 2004.) they were rewarded for their efforts by being called “stupid” by Charles Barkley.

I’ve been a longtime reader of isteve, and agree with him much of the time, but on this one I’m going to have to call bullshit, and I can back it up.

You see, Steve, the reason black people get most of the personal fouls called is because there are more black players in any particular game.

It’s just like in black neighborhoods, most of the people arrested will be black because they commit…

    Oh.

Now I see what you did there.

  5. Easy-Peary … the NBA should follow the lead of America’s mayors, by hiring more black refs and telling all refs to look the other way when the offender is a PoC.

    Get it right. https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=997562&rec=1&srcabs=1800840&pos=3

    1) The racial effect was minute.
    2) The paper controlled for a “black style” of play.
    3) The “star” effect was large, where referees are lenient calling fouls on stars.
    4) The N.B.A. refused to share data. But they claimed that white referees were not calling more fouls on black players. This suggests that black referees call more fouls on black players when they are part of a white officiating crew.

  20. The unionized refs need to be replaced by automation. As much as inhumanly possible.

Obviously, a computer can determine whether a pitch was in the strike zone, picked a corner, etc. with a confidence level far superior to that of a unionized, home plate umpire.

Judgement calls are worse than ridiculous. In a fast-moving game like professional basketball, a unionized-ref cannot possibly pickup all the micro-aggressions committed.

How does a line judge, with 20:20 vision corrected, determine that a 150 mph serve hit the line?

The most outrageous process is the “replay official in NY”, e.g. in a studio probably located across the hall from Steinbrenner’s office.

Why don’t people bring up the obvious more often? Whites, when compared to Asians (especially Fancy Asians):
    – are more likely to be killed by police
    – are incarcerated in greater numbers
    – earn less money
    – are less likely to earn a high school or college degree
    – score lower on standardized tests

  32. I like golf , a sport where players call fouls on themselves, sometimes losing a round or even a tournament because of the accessed stroke penalty. Try that in football or blacketball or baseball where every penalty results in a dramatic reaction from the penalized player. I wonder what an NBA or NFL game would look like without the refs.

Are there even any white safeties any more, in the Doug Plank tradition? Or do they just go with four cornerblacks?

Safeties of course usually play a deep zone on pass plays or come up to backstop the linebackers on run plays. So blinding speed and agility aren’t quite as vital as at cornerback, where you are apt to be man-to-man on some of the fastest athletes on the planet.

So I think safety, especially strong safety, is about as suited to white players as any defensive position. (Then again, most NFL defenses seem to have about about 9 blacks and 2 whites on the field at any given time anyway). Harrison Smith, for example, is a perennial all-pro for Minnesota. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrison_Smith_(American_football)

this was more recently than 04, sometime after 2010 if i remember right. unless we’re talking about 2 different attempts at this.

just more idiotic nonsense, as anybody who watched NBA seriously would have noticed the opposite was the case. sometimes the white players are just standing there with their hands up doing nothing else and still get called for defensive fouls. i noticed that over 20 years ago. white players that cleanly block black players on a drive can expect to get called for fouls. seems to be about a 50% chance of that by my estimation. white players have about a 500% higher chance of being called for traveling, even though they travel less. pretty much any time they do travel, it’s a call. black players are allowed to travel at will. the double dribble and carry rules are enforced on white players at about a 200% higher rate. black players are also allowed to do offensive fouls on jumpshots sometimes that would automatically be a foul for other players. usually kicking their legs out forward so they kick the defender on purpose. they also get away with flagrant 1 and 2 fouls more often, typically with a downgrade of 1 level.

some of the refs seemed to be deliberately trying to foul out the couple white players on the floor. there was an instance of this during one the Lakers playoff runs, when a ref was clearly just trying to get Luke Walton out of the game, and on personal foul 6, Phil Jackson was so mad, he wouldn’t take Walton out of the game for like 2 minute after the foul. he just stood there glaring at the official in disbelief for a while, holding up the game, then finally sent Walton to the bench.

The number of hate crime murders hit a record high in 2019, while overall hate crime incidents rose by nearly 3% last year, according to the FBI’s annual hate crime report, published on Monday.

The big picture: The data coincides with a growing number of white nationalist hate groups, which rose by 55% between 2017 and 2019, per the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) watchdog group.

“Racially and ethnically motivated violent extremists — specifically white supremacist extremists — will remain the most persistent and lethal threat in the Homeland,” the Department of Homeland Security said in October.
By the numbers: There were 7,314 reported hate crimes in 2019, up from 7,120 the year before. Of 7,103 single-bias incidents — where one or more offenses are motivated by the same bias — reported last year:

55.8% were prompted by race, ethnicity or ancestry bias.
Nearly half (48.4%) of race-motivated hate crimes were due to anti-Black bias.
    About 14.1% of race-motivated crimes were anti-Hispanic and 4.3% anti-Asian.
21.4% were motivated by religious bias
There were 953 reports of crimes targeting Jewish people and institutions last year, up about 12% since 2018.
16.8% were prompted by sexual-orientation bias
2.8% were motivated by gender-identity bias.
2.2% were motivated by disability bias.
1% were motivated by gender bias.
More than half of known offenders of all reported hate crimes were white.
A record 51 people were killed in hate motivated incidents last year, including 22 people killed in a shooting that targeted Mexicans at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas.

The previous record was set in 2018, when 24 people were killed in hate-motivated incidents. (The FBI began collecting data in the 1990s.)
Worth noting: The FBI report is compiled through voluntary reporting by law enforcement agencies. Underreporting remains an issue, so the data is likely incomplete. Lack of trust between police and the community also affects data aggregation.

Jeff Heath intercepted the Broncos twice yesterday. also the only player to intercept Mahomes this season.

as usual, he’s not allowed to start, and a much inferior player starts over him. this was also the case when he played for the Cowboys, who eventually got rid of him for a ‘real’ safety. the Cowboys now have the worst NFL defense in 50 years, per the numbers.

there would be many more safeties and several corners if NFL teams were actually interested in playing the best players. as we can see from the most recent NFL rules decision about awarding teams draft picks for hiring vibrant coaches and managers, NFL is actually run as a jobs program for africans.

It can be fun to watch clips of the worst examples.

Wonder if anyone has ever quantified how many of the silliest technicalities were called against blacks, proportionally. Because all it took in some cases was for a player to maintain eye contact for half a millisecond.

Back in the late 60s, the Boston Bruins had a talented but mercurial center named Derek Sanderson. As a young member of the Big, Bad Bruins teams of the time, he was too willing to drop the gloves at any provocation, which didn’t sit well with coach Harry Sinden. Sanderson complained that the referees were targeting him as a youngster mixing it up with more veteran players, with whom the refs would be more familiar and who’d get the benefit of the doubt.

One night the Bruins were ahead by a goal late in the game and Sinden sent Sanderson’s line out (Sanderson being one of the best faceoff winners and penalty killers in the NHL) with the admonition that he not do anything to earn a penalty. About 10 seconds after the faceoff, Sanderson was in the corner fighting with an opponent for control of the puck when a second player ran him from behind with no call from the refs. The same player then punched Sanderson in the head, and Sanderson refrained from retaliating. Then the ref skated over and said, “You both get 2 minutes!”, to Sanderson’s disbelief. As he put it in his 1970 book, Sanderson figured he’d get his money’s worth, so he dropped the gloves and beat the stuffing out of the guy who’d punched him. He then meekly skated to the penalty box.

Of course, that also means that Trump who says he won the election is also speculating. But the point is taken into account. Realize each state calls the election based on official results, with the media calling the election as a result of that tabulation.
