As I pointed out back on July 1, Althea Bernstein’s hate hoax was one of the most obvious yet, but it roped in a lot of media and the stupider celebrities such as Princess Markle or whatever her name is. From Wisconsin State-Journal:

Madison police, federal law enforcement find no evidence biracial woman was attacked
Chris Rickert | Wisconsin State Journal 4 hrs ago

Madison police announced Friday they have not been able to corroborate allegations made by a biracial Monona woman that she was burned by four white men in Downtown Madison in June in what was initially reported as a hate crime and garnered national and international attention.

Althea Bernstein, 18, told police someone sprayed lighter fluid on her and set her on fire in the early morning hours of June 24 after one of the men yelled a racial epithet.

But on Friday, the police department said it was closing the case because “after an exhaustive probe, detectives were unable to corroborate or locate evidence consistent with what was reported.”

The case was also investigated by the FBI and the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, and in its own statement Friday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Wisconsin said that “after reviewing all available evidence, authorities could not establish that the attack, as alleged by the complainant, had occurred.”

Bernstein’s family said in a statement that they appreciated “the detailed investigative efforts by all involved in this case,” asked for privacy and said they would not be granting interviews.

“Althea’s injuries are healing and the support of our community has been invaluable in that regard,” they said.

Bernstein was interviewed on “Good Morning America” two days after she reported the incident, and Meghan Markle and Prince Harry of the British royal family reached out her her as well. Madison and Dane County officials had also condemned the alleged attack, with Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway calling it “a horrifying and absolutely unacceptable crime that … may have been a premeditated crime targeted toward people of color.”

Madison Area Crime Stoppers and the California-based Mizel Family Foundation and Center for Combating Antisemitism had offered a combined $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators.

But there have been questions about the veracity of the woman’s report because, unlike in other crimes that occur Downtown, police never released surveillance camera images of the incident or possible suspects in an attempt to find the perpetrators. Very little of the public parts of Downtown are hidden from the views provided by dozens of city-owned cameras and other private surveillance cameras police have access to.

Despite the investigation’s findings, Wahl said his department is not recommending Bernstein be charged with obstructing an officer, which can apply in cases in which a person makes a false police report. The U.S. Attorney’s office was not immediately available for comment, but Wahl said he doubted it would pursue charges against Bernstein, either.

Wahl said there is a difference between actively trying to deceive law enforcement and law enforcement not being able to corroborate a report of a crime, and he said Bernstein and her family have been cooperative throughout the investigation.

Oh, come on, this 18-year-old woman carried out a hate crime by filing a false police report accusing another race of carrying out a hate crime against her. There’s enormous evidence on the web that her lies exacerbated hatred toward a different race than her’s.

Further, after lying low for most of the summer, she reiterated her blood libel in late August. From the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram:

One of the demonstrators was Althea Bernstein, the 18-year-old Black woman who was lit on fire as she sat in her car at a Madison intersection waiting for the light to change in June. Bernstein told police a group of white men squirted lighter fluid in her face and ignited it. Police have released little information about the attack.

Bernstein said she only recently returned downtown to protest and that it felt empowering, the State Journal reported.

“It’s been mentally exhausting. There’s good days and bad days,” Bernstein told the crowd. “I realized I need to be down here. I’m an EMT, I’m here for medical service. Does my skin color offend you? Does my success scare you? Does the fact that I’m a Black woman make you worried that change in going to happen?”

The deal I would have offered before she went back to promoting herself was: No charges if she makes a public apology and calls for greater awareness of the prevalence and viciousness of anti-white hate hoaxes like her own.

But now … throw the book at her.

And … how much did this 3 month long investigation cost? She should pay it back.

Back to State-Journal:

“We were unable to corroborate (Bernstein’s story), but we are not speculating on what did and did not happen,” he said. He also confirmed that Bernstein’s injuries were consistent with being burned, and said she has offered no “alternative explanation” for what happened to her.

Police noted that Bernstein has been consistent in her description of the attack to friends and family, her phone’s GPS locations matched up with what she reported to police and her phone messages did not indicate an intent to deceive law enforcement or the public.

Bernstein told police she was driving her brother’s 2007 Hyundai Elantra through Downtown following a date when she stopped at a stoplight, possibly on West Gorham Street at State Street, at around 1 a.m. June 24 and was approached by four white men, one of whom yelled a racial epithet.

One of the men squirted her with lighter fluid through her open driver’s side window and then threw a lit lighter or match at her, she said, setting her face and neck on fire before she patted out the flames. Her family later released photos of her showing burns to her face.

She described the men as looking like “frat boys” — two of whom were wearing “floral shirts” and blue jeans and two of whom were in all black and wearing masks. The man who allegedly sprayed her was wearing a “salmon-colored” floral shirt, she told police.

An exhaustive search of video from city- and privately owned surveillance cameras, however, turned up no evidence of the attack, and the investigation identified a number inconsistencies in Bernstein’s story.

A surveillance camera at West Gorham and State. for example, captured images of the Elantra at 12:44 a.m. but nothing to substantiate the alleged attack. …

A review of 17 city cameras in the Downtown area from 12:15 a.m. to 1:15 a.m. found no groups of white males matching Bernstein’s descriptions.

Police also did not find any fire damage in the Elantra, according to police reports, and a dog trained to sniff out accelerants did not find evidence of them of in the car.

… A forensic analysis of the shirt she was wearing at the time of the attack did turn up evidence of a “medium petroleum distillate,” such as charcoal lighter fluid, according to the police investigation. But no such evidence was found on the shorts she was wearing at the time, nor on swabs taken of the vehicle.

The police investigation also found evidence that Bernstein had her window rolled up at the time of the alleged attack and hadn’t stopped at stoplights where it might have occurred. It also determined she had been driving in a different lane than she told police and was uncertain about where exactly the incident occurred.

In addition to 157 pages of reports in the case, police released a timeline of the events of the night in the form of a nearly three-minute-long video and 23-page report.

Investigators told the Bernstein family’s attorney that “the attack, as Bernstein had described it, had not occurred,” according to police reports, but also told her that there was “no evidence that Bernstein had colluded with anyone to make a false report or that there was any mal-intent or pre-planning that occurred in regards to Bernstein’s statement to police.” …

The alleged attack on Bernstein happened on the same night police were dealing with violent Black Lives Matter protests in the Downtown in which protesters tore down two statues on the Capitol Square, including one of a Union Civil War soldier and abolitionist, and threw a Molotov cocktail through a window of the City-County Building, starting a small fire.

Bernstein told police she was attacked around 1 a.m., or about 20 minutes after the CCB was firebombed, but Wahl said it was “pretty clear” from the investigation that Bernstein was neither a perpetrator nor a victim in the CCB attack.

A rioter was videoed squirting lighter fluid on the County Jail. Are we supposed to believe that the lighter fluid that got on her in downtown Madison around the time of the arson attack on the CCB building was a completely unrelated lighter fluid?

There’s probably not enough evidence to charge her with arson, but the most plausible explanation is that some of the BLM/Antifa rioters’ lighter fluid got on her somehow, and she made up her racist blood libel to distract from that.

The timeline released by police tracks Bernstein’s movements and her vehicle for about two and a half hours beginning around 12:15 a.m., ending with what appears to be a redacted photo of Bernstein in a hospital gown around 3 a.m. at the UW Hospital emergency room on the Near West Side.

According to the timeline and electronic messages reviewed by police, Bernstein first mentions the alleged attack while at home in Monona at 1:24 a.m.

“Some (expletive) up (expletive) just happened,” she writes in a text to Nick Livingston, whom Bernstein had been on the date with earlier in the evening. “Someone on state street tried to set me on fire … yelled the n word and threw beer and a lighter at me … its still burning my skin … it was a group of white guys.”

Impunity …

It’s a sensitive time, and this poor family has been traumatized. Why won’t you people just leave us alone? I bet if the cops tried harder, they could have found those frat boys, but you know, systemic racism. Right Meghan?

As you observed many weeks ago, Ms. Bernstein's parents are as much as saying they don't believe their daughter and would like to move on.

Acting Chief of Police Vic Wahl is a Realist about police-community relations. He hasn't drunk the Woke Kool Aid but understands who is signing his pay checks. The Mayor is as much a "head case" as Ms. Bernstein. Chief Wahl's predecessor Mike Koval was True Believer in Morals and the Duties of policing and not so much a realist as the Acting Chief.

Hate hoaxers (and other criminals) are really going to have realize at some point that whenever you step out in public nowadays you are being filmed up the kazoo and your license plates recorded (and your location known to Google or Apple). They obviously don't want to prosecute her but they could if they wanted to and they have enough evidence to make a case.

As of now, these cases are going to keep happening because it is all upside and no downside for the hate hoaxer.

  6. City Pages, a weekly news magazine covering Minneapolis and St. Paul, published an article Friday headlined, “Let’s laugh at all these very good ‘Trump has COVID’ tweets.”

Editor-in-chief Emily Cassel led the piece by writing, “So President Trump and the First Lady have COVID. Man, anyone else just in a really, inexplicably good mood this morning?”

“Now, some blue-check liberals out there are saying it’s not cool or noble or taking the high road to joke about Trump getting coronavirus, and to them we say: Biiiig fart noise.”

The tweets Cassel highlighted in the article were in a similar vein, with one reading: “I think I speak for everyone when I say that it would be insanely funny if he died of the coronavirus.”

City Pages is owned by the Star Tribune Media Company.

    https://archive.is/2HVWp

Cassel provided news outlets with the following statement: “Regarding my blog post and the subsequent blowback, I would simply like to quote the president: ‘Every time I speak of the haters and losers I do so with great love and affection. They cannot help the fact that they were born f—-d up!’”

She was quoting a tweet Trump sent in 2014.

Of all the crimes of white frat boys, the worst are the ones where they set some cullut lady on fire while she tryna get her hair did.

  11. This was an obvious hoax from the beginning. Not surprising the locals won’t pursue her. The feds letting it go is interesting. One of two possible choices: 1) she lawyered up in time to not make false statements to the feds, or 2) the fbi is woke now. I’d believe either.

  12. I read the police report from the provided link. They were able to verify Althea did not go to the City County Building. Her story is a complete pack of lies. Although part of the purpose was trying to cover up that she went to hookup with some 24 year old guy she met on a dating app. There is 9 minutes unaccounted for when she leaves his apartment and starts driving to her brother’s house to exchange vehicles with him. Her brother was mad at her because she brought a pig and goat to the house earlier in the day and made a big mess.

Large sections of the reports are redacted so I can’t tell everything the police know, but my impression is they think it was either self inflicted, happened during the 9 minute gap or her brother did it. She is texting/ using Snapchat the whole time she is driving and doesn’t mention the attack to anyone until after she leaves her brother’s. He seems like the most likely suspect.

The cops waited three months to close the case only because they wanted the hoopla to die down first. I’m guessing they smelled a rat from the start. Ten years ago they would’ve closed the case in a few days, but this isn’t ten years ago. Most of these cases are hoaxes and are presumed to be hoaxes by the cops up front and the accusers know this. This is black people saying, “Look what we can make the cops do that other people can’t.”

It’s a petty power game, and nothing more. Blacks know that they won’t be able to play these games forever – this accommodating environment we live in will eventually come to an end – so they’re taking advantage of it while they can. And what’s the benefit to them? The same benefit of harassing public school teachers or pushing other kids down in the school yard. You get to be “tyrant for a day.”

  26. I should add in the 9 unaccounted for minutes Althea is on foot, racking up far more steps than would be necessary to walk to her car according to her fitness app. The officer who asks her about this gets no explanation out of her. It is too far for her to walk to the capitol building and back in that amount of time. I got the impression she didn’t even know there was a riot until the next day. Her dad and a friend seem to be the first ones to suggest it was a racial attack, her dad says white supremacists are known for wearing Hawaiian shirts. The guy she hooked up with meets at the hospital.

A Jackie Coakley scenario where she did it to herself also seems plausible. The medical interviews are heavily redacted, but from what I could read, they never considered reporting her case to the police. There is also an interview with her former boss when she was an EMT. It is heavily redacted but seems to suggest there were significant problems in her short time there. Her lawyer ends the interview with police where they lay out all the evidence they have that she hasn’t told the truth with a statement that there are many possible reasons why a victim might not want the whole story to be told. This blood libel against whites should be prosecuted but I don’t see how the Madison PD can do that without pressuring her for a full confession.

Its a bit dense, but it sounds like patients with initial antibody response don’t need it, but the high dose works well for those with no initial antibody response. Like they are done in 7 days? CNN is dying for this to be serious. But the worse they make it sound, the better a recovered Trump will appear. Biden pausing negative Trump ads. This has Washington energized. Pelosi wants a deal on phase 2 aid package.

Trump will be in some sort of Presidential suite at Walter Reed, which includes offices.

OT…I remember a Baltimore/Yankee game in around 1980, where Reggie Jackson ran into a wall. They elaborately carried him on a stretcher from the field to the dugout, at which point Regie jumped off the stretcher and tipped his cap. I suspect that Trump is enjoying the spectacle.

You'll probably get that sensation soon enough, the next time you catch a cold or the flu, if the stories about permanent lung damage from Covid are true. A cold with lung damage should subjectively feel like having Covid, like having a cold with a certain frisson, I'd think. Second-time Covid will probably not feel like first-time Covid: It could be more like a power outage in an iron lung, when the backup generator runs out of gas.

When the repeatedly Covid-infected party-hearty generation reaches their mid 40s, we could see an epidemic of intubations. Invest in ventillator companies now.

  60. “A rioter was videoed squirting lighter fluid on the County Jail. Are we supposed to believe that the lighter fluid that got on her in downtown Madison around the time of the arson attack on the CCB building was a completely unrelated lighter fluid?”

Yes. It was a good, plausible theory, but it’s time to retire it. Please check out the police investigation file:

“There was no indication from the GPS locations associated with Bernstein’s Snapchat records that she was involved in any of the destructive and violent activity that took place downtown, in the early morning hours of June 24, 2020.” (page 107)

    https://www.cityofmadison.com/police/documents/2020-227434-CaseDocuments.pdf

And her car is caught on camera as it passes right through downtown during this time period (also supported by GPS; see page 121). Video evidence which, of course, also contradicts Bernstein’s whole attack story.

(See also page 151-153 for step count data, etc that support her basic whereabouts the entire night.)

I’m getting Jackie Coakley vibes from this one. Just like Coakley made up the sexyboy frat attack to get sympathy from her crush, did Bernstein similarly give herself a little burn to get sexyboy frat attack sympathy from her crush, Nick Livingston?

(Also of possible interest. She describes two of the attackers as wearing Hawaiian shirts in her second police interview on page 19, but according to her father’s interview on pages 77-78 she did not initially accept this description, and he was the one who informed her that “white supremacists” wear Hawaiian shirts. It is also suggested on page 107 that her friend Khandra implanted the idea that “white supremacists” wear all black, again before she made her reports. The same friend indicates that the attackers were initially described as “all in black” (page 141).)

(Also of possible interest. Detective Justine Harris patiently and sympathetically explaining to Bernstein why her story didn’t happen. Bernstein pouts, simultaneously declares amnesia and 100% certainty, doubles-down and accuses the police of negligence for not warning the public about white supremacists. (pages 121-124))

(Also of possible interest. After running out of all possible leads the Madison Police consult a religious psychic who also blood libel’s white men (page 146). Top notch content!)

I think the royal family purposely chose a biracial American, and feigned the “split” from the family to start a political dynasty in America. If you take a look at some of Meghan’s recent comments about potentially wading into politics and her clear stance on racial issues following the progressive narrative; they’re positioning themselves for a run at the White House.

By “breaking away” from the royal family, they’re hoping that the American voters see no conflict of interest in voting for her. The MSM still fawns over them relentlessly, and what a better story than the first female US President not only being black but also a princess!! A real life Disney saga!!

It’ll be interesting (in a terrible way for the average American) to see the coming power struggle between the Obamas and Meghan Markle. Either way it’s a loss for the country and I hope it never comes to fruition. As I’ve said before, the political elites in the UK are a much bigger foe than the Russians ever will be.

  71. There is no way for a Black to determine if what was done by Miss Lighter Fluid was wrong. To do so requires abstract thinking and the ability to reflect upon the self.

Abstract thinking because a rule such as “Do not seek to blame others for a mistake you have made.” is beyond Their comprehension.

Self reflection because even if They were to learn the rule by rote application of the rule upon whites, They are incapable of seeing that Their own activity fits the rule.

So, it is not Their fault, it is the DNA. Nevertheless, All should be shipped back to Africa before Their destruction of my country is complete.

As an aside, I quite like the demand to capitalize Black. Observe the difference.

You’ll probably get that sensation soon enough, the next time you catch a cold or the flu, if the stories about permanent lung damage from Covid are true. A cold with lung damage should subjectively feel like having Covid, like having a cold with a certain frisson, I’d think.

Absolutely they should. It’s a hate crime. All crime should be prosecuted if the aim is to limit it.

Was it a hate crime or was it a “get sympathy”/alibi crime?

    Replies: @Anonymous

Yes it was a hate crime. She falsely accused white males, pouring gasoline onto fire of ongoing racial animus and putting her fellow Madisonians in danger of being hurt, physically and financially, by rioters. Left unpunished, such actions only welcome more hate hoaxes.

Just like Jessie, she should at least be NAMED as a liar and hoaxer and be required to pay off the huge amount of money spent on investigating her lies.

Oh, and the fact that her shirt did have traces of lighter fluid but nothing on her car did also makes her a likely arsonist – something that an honest police department should have investigated.

    • Agree: John Regan, J.Ross
  75. There’s probably not enough evidence to charge her with arson, but the most plausible explanation is that some of the BLM/Antifa rioters’ lighter fluid got on her somehow, and she made up her racist blood libel to distract from that

Dubious. When a woman makes a false complaint of rape it is very rarely to cover up that she herself was in on a rape. She’d made her way home alone from a date and her date was the first one to be told about how a bunch of young white men had zeroed in on her. My bet would be she was feeling hormonal and aching for attention as only girls of that age can
    .

  76. She should pay it back with prison time.

  77. “As I pointed out back on July 1, Althea Bernstein’s hate hoax was one of the most obvious yet, but it roped in a lot of media and the stupider celebrities such as Princess Markle or whatever her name is.”

Princess Markle does seem like a clueless moron, but many leftists are not morons. It seems like this hate hoax should have been obvious to anyone with the least bit of sense, so what is happening in the heads of leftists with triple-digit IQs when they hear a preposterous story like Althea’s?

  78. @Rooster8
No doubt you’ll hear the chorus of “systemic racism” now that they found no evidence to support her claim. However, in actuality they probably have a mountain of evidence against her, that they are choosing to not disclose in an effort to prevent further riots by the radical left in Madison.

The FBI, Madison Police, and Civil Rights Division of the DOJ are some of the furthest left enforcement agencies we have. No doubt chocked full of eager SJW’s whose life mission it is to put away evil White men for crimes against minorities. It must be defeating for them to continually be uncovering hate hoaxes. I wonder, is the rot so deep in their brains that they just cannot rationalize the absurdity of their own jobs and personal vendettas against a boogey-man that doesn’t exist?

Also, when I saw Markle call this girl, I knew the whole thing was complete B.S. We don’t need to worry about the Russians, clearly it’s the U.K. we should be watching as everything comes to light on their nefarious actions towards the U.S.

"A rioter was videoed squirting lighter fluid on the County Jail. Are we supposed to believe that the lighter fluid that got on her in downtown Madison around the time of the arson attack on the CCB building was a completely unrelated lighter fluid?"

Yes. It was a good, plausible theory, but it's time to retire it.

Video evidence which, of course, also contradicts Bernstein's whole attack story.

(See also page 151-153 for step count data, etc that support her basic whereabouts the entire night.)

I'm getting Jackie Coakley vibes from this one. Just like Coakley made up the sexyboy frat attack to get sympathy from her crush, did Bernstein similarly give herself a little burn to get sexyboy frat attack sympathy from her crush, Nick Livingston?

(Also of possible interest. She describes two of the attackers as wearing Hawaiian shirts in her second police interview on page 19, but according to her father's interview on pages 77-78 she did not initially accept this description, and he was the one who informed her that "white supremacists" wear Hawaiian shirts. It is also suggested on page 107 that her friend Khandra implanted the idea that "white supremacists" wear all black, again before she made her reports. The same friend indicates that the attackers were initially described as "all in black" (page 141).)

(Also of possible interest. Detective Justine Harris patiently and sympathetically explaining to Bernstein why her story didn't happen. Bernstein pouts, simultaneously declares amnesia and 100% certainty, doubles-down and accuses the police of negligence for not warning the public about white supremacists. (pages 121-124))

(Also of possible interest. After running out of all possible leads the Madison Police consult a religious psychic who also blood libel's white men (page 146). Top notch content!)

    Replies: @Barnard, @black sea

My question on Althea self inflicting the burns is how she did it in such a short amount of time. I got the impression the burns were superficial and not consistent with getting sprayed with a flammable liquid, but the medical interviews are so redacted it is hard to tell what they told cops. The worst part is in a more corrupt system without the video footage she would have any white kids they drug into to arrest.

Your mistake is in thinking that militant SJWs are good people who just happen to have flawed beliefs.

Also Meghan is pure American, in the worst ways, as many people have pointed out. She had no desire to assimilate into upper class British life. The most generous interpretation one could make of her is that she wanted to be a literal Hollywood princess. More likely is that she had plans to mold the British royal family and the British people to her liking from the start. The only real question is why Harry - and ultimately his family - has gone along with it. Did he blackmail them into accepting his appallingly unsuitable bride? Were they afraid of a sequel to what Charles went through (and brought upon the family)? Did they think it would improve the monarchy's image to let someone like Meghan marry into the family (and I am not only referring to her race)? Will we ever learn the answers to these questions?

    Replies: @Rooster8

  97. Well, no surprises here. This played out exactly as we all thought it would.

She filed a false police report yet will not be charged. Team Althea continues this ridiculous façade, insisting she is telling the truth despite all the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Then, of course, she states that her brain is ‘erasing’ the memory before once again asserting it happened exactly as she reported.

So much hilarity. Every time this chick opens her mouth…except to eat…she buries herself in lies. Hmmm, where to start…

…how about this: “I just don’t understand why there’s no evidence”. WTF?? She may very well be the stupidest person on the face of the earth, but she has balls bigger than those things rolling around behind Indiana Jones.

Or how about her blaming the police for being negligent because they failed to warn her about White Supremists roaming the streets out to set little girls on fire?

Or how about her texting her boyfriend while she was supposedly on fire?

Or her claims of death threats (she failed to report)?

Or whining incessantly about people saying mean things about her on social media that caused her far more pain and trauma than the attack did?

Or how worried she is about what will happen to her when the report is released?

Or that the hospital staff insisted on throwing away the sweatshirt she was wearing even though they deny that claim?

The list goes on and on…

…she stated that she drove herself to the ER, yet surveillance cameras at the hospital show her as a passenger when the car arrives, and she is walking with an adult male in the parking lot. Is there even ONE WORD of truth in her entire statement?

And based on her texts to her mother, it appears her mom is just as stupid as she is. I think it’s safe to say we know what side of the family she got her brains from.

What’s most remarkable is that this apparently was all about garnering sympathy from her boyfriend so she could get laid. I thought it was about covering up her actions that night at the riots…although it has been determined the T-shirt she was wearing was covered with an accelerant similar to charcoal lighter fluid. And in a remarkable coincidence, charcoal lighter fluid was in fact used in the attack on the government buildings earlier that evening.

When complaining about police negligence, she admits she has a friend in the mayor’s office. Gee, I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact she wasn’t charged with filing a false police report? And I thought the LAPD was corrupt. If this happened in LA, I guarantee she’d be arrested.

So that’s that. This was as predictable as the sunrise. She lied to the police. She got away with it. And life goes on…but this truly sucks. She should be behind bars. Or at the very least ordered to have a psychiatric evaluation, because she’s bat-sheet bonkers.
