Review: ‘In the Fade’ Is a Tale of Grief and Violence in Modern Germany

“In the Fade,” the new film by Fatih Akin, is divided into three parts. The first two follow a pattern that will be familiar to “Law & Order” fans.
“Law & Order” is of course world-famous for being completely un-figure-out-able. Who will the real killer turn out to be: the Puerto Rican transgender sex worker, the black felon with all the Crips tattoos who converted to Nation of Islam on Death Row, or coal industry lawyer Choate Saltonstall Crowninshield VII of Park Avenue?
A crime is investigated, and then a trial conducted, with a few twists and reversals on the way to the verdict. The emphasis, though, falls less on the procedural aspects of the case than its psychological effects, specifically on Katja Sekerci (Diane Kruger), a German woman whose husband and young son are killed in a bombing in Hamburg.
Mr. Akin, whose previous features include the explosive “Head-On” …
Which is a pretty good movie.
Because her husband, Nuri (Numan Akar), was a Turkish immigrant and a former drug dealer, the police raise the specters of Islamist terrorism and gang activity. Katja is adamant: “Nazis killed my husband.”

She has the grim satisfaction of being right.
Wow, I never saw that coming …
… The accused murderers, a young married couple, are defended by a tall, bald, sarcastic lawyer (Johannes Krisch) who is perhaps a bit too transparently villainous. But he does succeed in galvanizing the audience’s disgust, and in reframing the story as a conflict between the desire for justice and the drive for vengeance.
This is a venerable theme in movies, driving the plots of most of westerns. In this instance, it carries an extra jolt of political relevance. How should liberal societies deal with homegrown political extremists, who seek protection from the democratic norms and institutions they are committed to destroying? How should the victims of far-right-wing violence fight back?
Surely, introducing Middle Eastern and West Asian forms of justice such as clan vendettas, acid attacks, gang rapes, and mob-pillaging of the entire neighborhood of the offender would be appropriate innovations in northwestern European jurisprudence in order to make immigrants feel more at home.
This question goes to the occasional liberals that visit Unz.com, do you sincerely believe that all the standard plot “twists” (they are not really twists if they always the same) are clever? I mean it is absolutely predictable that any Hollywood production that hints at some bombing being from Muslims always turns out to be white men in the end.
Here's a suggestion: the people who work as producers, directors, and screenwriters are bourgeois who grew up bourgeois. Slum dwellers, whether vicious or benign, are no one they've ever known or can empathize with sufficiently to make them interesting to either themselves or their intended audience. (And, truth be told, it might be a challenge for just about anyone to make a 3-dimensional literary character out of the human material you find in most homicide cases). The weird thing is that theatrical leftists still perceive themselves as being edgy for presenting the same old predictable social themes year after year, decade after decade. They’re like modern art or modern jazz…the more you try to mix up the shapes or notes within that context, the more you try to be different, the more you keep sounding like everyone else.

(In actuality it was robberies by Lebanese and Pacific Islanders done disproportionately on Indians due to their habit of carrying cash and being not very physically imposing, it became a ‘thing’ because of a huge influx of Indian students and hyped up by the Indian media)
He falls in love with a sexy blonde Australian girl (Who has no morals and works as a stripper and does an impromptu striptease for our dashing protagonist for no particular reason than she is a gori whore.) for whom he spurns the nice Indian girl who is an activist against racist Australians (He decides their protest is silly before realising the error of his ways and becoming an ethnic activist in a country he’s been in for a week.) before he realises he should have been with the good Indian girl all along. (But only after sleeping with the blonde girl.) The blonde girls brother is the Aryan-looking ordinary mechanic whose alter ego is a masked man who breaks into Indian immigrants homes at night and executes them with a gun! He not only breaks the blonde girls heart and leaves her treating her like trash, but kills her brother. A net gain for Australia from his immigration!
The question is why did the Australia government allow this film to be made given it depicts highly negative views of Australia based on things that didn’t happen which it portrays as being only dramatic representations of reality.
One could also include the Danish series ‘The Killing’ which ultimately portrays a reverse honour killing that is so at odds with reality that I don’t know where to begin.
Well, to be fair, the Nazis seem to be a very big menace in Germany today. I mean, I went to Berlin a couple of years ago, there were lots of grafitti and posters such as “Nazis Out” and “Refugees Welcome”, lots of Antifa types with t-shirt about Nazis. I felt I was in Berlin in the 30s. Only that in Berlin in the 30s is unlikely that protest against Nazis were so common and open, because, you know, the real Nazis might not like that, and you could end up in prison or with a bullet in the head.

You’ll notice among true-crime programs that Forensic Files and Homicide Hunter have a much more vernacular cast of characters than does Dateline or 48 Hours. Of these four, the first focuses on the lab work and the second on the life and work of the detective, who is an unusual character himself. The latter two are trying to make a story out of the lives of the defendant and the perpetrator.

Slum dwellers, whether vicious or benign, are no one they’ve ever known or can empathize with sufficiently to make them interesting to either themselves or their intended audience. (And, truth be told, it might be a challenge for just about anyone to make a 3-dimensional literary character out of the human material you find in most homicide cases). There are just enough bourgeois perpetrators among the 10,000 or so cleared homicide cases which occur in this country every year to keep Dateline and 48 Hours in scripts.

That’s likely true. There was another program whose perps were commonly serial killers. I think since 1960 law enforcement have identified about 350 serial killers in this country. That’s 6 or 7 a year when you’re producing 26 episodes. There’s a British detective serial which has been broadcast since 1998. They usually feature 2 or 3 homicides an episode by their perpetrator, all committed in small towns and villages in the English Home Counties (or is it supposed to be the West Country?). There have been about 20 serial killers identified in Britain in the last 60 years, and only a few in the south of England outside of London.

How about a film with a protagonist who has become disenchanted with all the benefits diversity?
His once peaceful and prosperous community is now little more than a third world flop house where he worries constantly, but in silence about his children’s safety/future in his brave new world.

Unfortunately it isn’t always completely made up…this movie (stupid as it no doubt is) seems to be inspired by the NSU murders. Back in the early 2000s (2000-2006) there was a series of murders of Turkish shopkeepers in Germany, which was really mysterious since no one had any idea what was behind it. The police thought it might have something to do with organized crime and apparently wasn’t always very sensitive when dealing with the relatives of murder victims (some of whom felt discriminated against or almost treated like criminals themselves, as if the police thought they were hiding something). There was also the theory it was the work of some racist serial killer…but there were never any solid leads. Then in 2011, after a bank robbery gone wrong two known Neonazis who had gone into hiding in the 1990s were cornered by police and committed suicide (at least that’s the official story)…and their weapons and other evidence linked them to the murders of Turkish shopkeepers years earlier. Apparently those had been the work of a Neonazi terror cell (calling itself the Nationalsozialistischer Untergrund, that is National socialist underground). This was a huge scandal in Germany, not just because of the supposed “racism” of the police investigation, but also because of some really murky and strange stuff concerning possible links between Germany’s Verfassungsschutz and the Nazis.
The trial of accomplices of the Nazi killers is still ongoing.
Anyway, of course this case was exploited as much as possible by the left and “antiracist” lobbyists, with the rituals of shame and guilt common in commemorations of WW2 Nazi crimes transferred to commemorations of this case, as if there had been some collective responsibility of all of Germany for it (the contrast with commemoration of last year’s Islamist terror attack in Berlin which politicians tried to memory-hole as fast as possible is striking).
So unfortunately such movies aren’t always completely without some basis in reality, though the picture of reality they paint is still laughably one-sided and distorted.

Cabot Cove, Maine, the setting of Murder She Wrote, had a (fictional) higher murder rate than any city in America, even in the violent 80’s, when it was set. If it had been a real town, Cabot Cover would have been the murder-capital of the world, and the main character, Jessica Fletcher, caught more murderers than any FBI agent in history.
The quaint seaside town being the setting of so many murders got so ridiculous a premise (even with the constant traveling to rich exotic locale that Jessica did throughout the show) that the producers eventually moved Jessica, to New York City to teach, where the producers felt it was more likely she would stumble across murders. Ironically,, this was during the beginning of the Broken Windows policy, so, when Jessica arrived the murder rate in NYC started dropping and her stumbling upon murders in the big city got progressively less believable as the seasons wore on.
As Law & Order went into the crime-dropping 1990s, it became a “thriller of the week” show as opposed to the “after school special/ we can’t stop this tide of crime, we can only hope to catch some/ racism, sexism, drugs, poverty!” show it started off as. Take a gander at the Paul Sorvino years versus the Benjamin Bratt years (Ben Bratt’s appearance as one of the detectives I believe marks the shift to pure thriller shows, including one guest starring his then-girlfriend Julia Roberts).
Dick Wolf has often said that he created Law & Order because all the other lawyer shows before it championed defense attorneys (Perry Mason, Matlock, etc.) , but he wanted to do something different and champion the prosecutors. That’s a nice party line, but more likely it was that by the late 1980s/early 1990s the Boomer Left had taken full political power in the big city DA’s offices and the old right was out of power, so making the prosecutors look evil or incompetent was making the Left look bad, so Wolf sought to rehabilitate the prosecutor image.
Now the question is what to watch with family members not yet Red-Pilled???
I would suggest the "The First 48"
Amazon Prime has some good series. Goliath was very watchable even though the guilty were two wealthy stale, pale males. One an elite lawyer (William Hurt), the other the head of an armaments manufacturer. It did not offend me. Sneaky Pete was very good and so is Bosch. We split the Prime cost of $99. You can always sign up for one month (12$) or two and watch all that is worth watching. I vastly prefer the “B”-ish series offerings of Amazon with less slick production than what you find in the movie theaters.
“Billions” on Showtime has an amazing supporting cast. Best I have ever seen. You can get Showtime streaming via Amazon on trial, binge watch and quit before you must pay____ iow…put Jeff Bezos to work for you.

There was another controversy about the film when it was released because it was very obvious that the director intentionally cast a former pornographic film actress as the female lead in order to garner the film publicity. I think his excuse was that it was hard to find a Turkish actress willing to do the sex scenes.
The actress went on to play a continuing character on Game of Thrones which I have never watched.

Looking back on these events in late 2017, it is clear that multiple Deep State actors (not all very competent) staged or at least encouraged these actions. I looked up on the murder rate of Cabot Cove and it is 274 murders in a population of 3500, so this supposedly quaint little town is truly the most dangerous place on earth, yet in every new episode they behave as if all of these murders don’t happen…
My parents used to watch that show, and even at the time, they would joke about Cabot Cove being the murder capital of the world. I feel like it was sort of like an in-joke among the fans, who knew it wasn't supposed to be realistic.
Over Christmas holiday, I watched a couple of reruns of it with them, and I found it funnier how the young, hip people were always coming up to her and saying "Excuse me, are you Jessica Fletcher?" when she was traveling. I guess the young urban professionals are really into old-lady cozy mysteries, to the point where they knew what the authors actually looked like.
First, so many lefties were opposed to Giuliani and his law-and-order platform. Lefties live in denial most of their existence, even as blacks around them are looting and assaulting.

Yes, something like that happened in that case, there probably is a cover-up of some sort. Some (imo somewhat paranoid) Turks even went so far as suggesting the murders were organized by Germany’s “deep state” (which of course is pretty much what happened in Turkey in recent decades, with the state being linked to extremist groups like the Grey wolves which murdered left-wingers and members of minorities). Personally I regard that as unlikely, it’s probably more like a cover-up of incompetence, dubious dealings with informers in Neonazi groups etc. But there definitely are some very strange elements to that case.
Have you heard of the similar murders of Gypsies in Hungary? These happened sometime in 2008-09. Interestingly, of the four perpetrators, one was a paid informer of the military counter-intelligence, and he did inform on the small cell getting more and more radical. After he reported that the group (hoping for a huge race war) decided to acquire firearms, the military counter-intelligence officer decided to close the case and broke contact with the informer as useless. Of the four perpetrators, three received life without the possibility of parole and the informer (who was only involved as a driver and only in some of the murders) got 13 years. I don’t think it’s supposed to be a twist. Every plot summary I’ve read mentions the couple because they go on trial early in the movie. What’s supposed to be interesting is the reaction of Kruger’s character.
I think a fan theory is that every single murder occurs in Jessica’s mind. Either Jessica is mapping out possible plots for her next book, or, more darkly, Jessica’s husband was murdered (we never find out how he died in the series), and her obsessional daydreaming about murder is her method of coping with it.
After all, the show opens with Jessica having had her first manuscript accepted by a publisher, with Jessica being recently widowed and just-retired as a schoolmarm. So Jessica, now electrified with success at writing and with nothing else to do and perhaps still grieving about her husband, is either constantly sketching out plots of her novels mentally or else, in dealing with her husband’s murder, is seeing murder everywhere as she as she goes about her daily life.
For example, each show opens with Jessica doing something rather routine and having it become murderous, so this turn would be Jessica daydreaming about how to make the the routine thing the show opens with more exciting. So the murders actually aren’t occurring in Jessica’s world, she’s just making them up to help her plan her next novel or because she’s hung up on what happened to her spouse.
This would also explain how a retired and previously-unknown New England school teacher has so many exotically wealthy and powerful friends around the globe that she travels to meet: it’s Jessica daydreaming again about vacationing from Cabot Cove.
This is, admittedly, a bit less exciting than the “Jessica is the real killer every time!” fan theory, but makes sense in a Walter Mitty-type way.

Yes, I have read about seven Bosch and Lincoln Lawyer books. Amazon Prime has three seasons of Bosch. Check out their ratings, they are very high with only two percent 1 star and 2 star for two of those seasons. 100,000 bothered to chime in and rate Season One. I liked all three seasons. Not in detail, interesting, thanks. I tend to be sceptical of such “conspiracy theories”…but on the other hand, some aspects of the NSU case do seem to be pretty strange (and there are a lot of things that have never been explained – NSU also murdered a German policewoman in 2007, totally unclear why exactly they did that). Left-wingers would of course explain it with the security services being riddled with Nazi sympathizers or something of the sort…I myself don’t really know what to think about it, very hard to evaluate.

I think one non-conspiracy explanation could be that these far right extremists are under near total surveillance. In other words, basically if you randomly assemble 3 or 4 of them, at least one will be an informer. That means that any such far right murderer or terrorist cell will have some kind of shady intelligence service connection to it. But since so many of them are simultaneously under surveillance (and also because of incompetence?), the intelligence services and police have a hard time keeping track of all the information they receive, so they won’t do anything about it. A corollary is that then they’ll try to suppress the proof of their incompetence, which will then look like a coverup of some kind of an inside job.

The difference is that the hourglass is generally going to birth children well with those child bearing hips and you are more likely to get complications with the so-called banana build. Form follows function.
You are right though, too much weight on any frame is too much, even on an hourglass. Initially it goes to the T&A but then noticeably it starts going on the waist, and if unlucky places like upper arms and ankles. There can be too much of a good thing. One might still hit it but you certainly don't want your friends finding out or you will never hear the end of it. Some hourglasses keep it together, some don't.

By the time you’ve had more than 3+children and your wife turns ~40, the future attractiveness of your wife should not be a big driver of any decisions. My future time orientation is having children. Worrying about what your wife looks like after 15-20 years and several children is a bit silly and baby boomerish IMO. You are welcome! Amazon probably has something there where its Bosch series are not faithful to the books. So many have read the Bosch books, that the Three Seasons Bosch at Amazon seem new-different to them.
