In my current Taki’s Magazine column, I praised the Grievance Studies Hoax for making the term “grievance studies” into a Thing.
But, I wondered, do skeptics really need to create fake Grievance Studies papers when countless real ones already exist that are comparably funny?
For example, there’s Sophie A. Lewis, feminist uterine geography theorist and cyborg ecologist.
She wrote that great op-ed in the New York Times about how lesbians who object to transgender ex-men taking over women’s sports and locker rooms must be hunted down and dealt with in Britain, just as they’ve been crushed in America. She makes Titania McGrath sound as wise as Jane Austen. As far as I can tell, Sophie’s career is either for real or a truly elaborate hoax.

In itself this provides no justification for the relative dearth (in geography) of theorizing ‘with’ the uterus as a site of doing and undoing; what I propose to call uterine geography. ‘Uterine’ relations are fundamentally cyborg, animatedly labouring and not only spatial but spatializing: they make and unmake places, borders, kin. This includes not only abortion, miscarriage, menstruation and pregnancy (whose transcorporeal and chimeric character is well documented in medical anthropology) but also other life-enabling forms of holding and letting go that do not involve anatomical uteri (such as trans-mothering and other alter-familial practices). Despite our discipline’s ostensible interest in co-production, hybridity and the more-than-human, the ‘doing’ aspects of intra and interuterine processes have tended to be black-boxed in accounts of care economies and social reproduction. The proposed remedy is deromanticization: an approach that critically politicizes uterine relations as historically contingent and subject to amelioration through struggle. Potential aides include Maggie Nelson’s idea that ‘labor does you’, Suzanne Sadedin’s account of gestation’s mutual hostility and the concepts of ‘sym-poiesis’ and ‘metramorphosis’. One notable consequence of this expanded concept of the uterine is that ‘assisted reproduction’, as it is characterized today, ceases to be categorically separate from other kinds of reproduction.

This is not a judgement on the truth of any of the mentioned ideas but I can imagine a pre-Constantine Roman going about his business, comfortable in his traditional religion that mostly served to communicate basic virtues of loyalty, integrity, discipline and so on, and boom – suddenly everyone is screaming at each other over whether there’s 3 gods in 1, or 1 god in 3, and none of it makes any sense to him because he thinks they all can all go off and believe in as many gods as they want as long as they stop trying to ram it down everyone else’s throats.

Christianity originally encompassed a wide range of opinions, but the opinions became localized -- the practice of one region or one city or one tribe. They then became of political importance, and Emperors trying to unite the Empire under one faith made political moves, relying on law and force, to reinforce religious moves (meetings involving representatives of the different opinions).
This was roughly similar to the moves made by Spain, the ones that kicked off the 30 Years War.
The rise of Islam was largely driven by the rise of plague in ancient cities. Harper describes this at length [2], and points out that a cooling episode could have been responsible for susceptibility to the plague. About a third of the people in cities were killed by Justinian's Plague. If you add in those who were crippled by the plague, perhaps half the labor force of the ancient world vanished very quickly. The Roman Empire (and to an extent the Persian Empire) could no longer raise armies sufficient to defend their territory. Barbarians, those who lived outside an empire, were not so much subject to the plague, and prevailed.
Islam, during the Caliphate, apparently destroyed all surviving records of the Arab Conquest, so very little is known about the early days of Islam. However, it is clear that Islam held the Arab conquests together, and so to the Caliphate was of political importance comparable to that of Christianity to the Roman Empire.
Holland tells the story very well, and, again, there are strong parallels to today, most notably in demography. It also appears that today may well be the end of modernity. Like the Arabs, who at first lived in tent cities, separate from the Roman demographic sink cities, the new immigrants cannot live in the prevailing society and are at least trying to take control of the society and build something more to their own liking.
If nothing else, the Arabs conquest of the Middle East (and much of the rest of the world) demonstrates that such takeovers can succeed, and remain stable for a very long time after that success. The Middle East of late antiquity was intensely commercial, and had a very high productivity, at least as measured in terms of their artifacts. That changed under Arab rule. Buildings became much smaller, and remaining economic activity became more centered on the Silk Road and the sea trade with India. Islamic countries today are noted for their small industrial output [3].

There if a fairly new book by Holland [1] that discusses the time of the formation of Christianity and Islam as we now know it: “late antiquity”. It has some interesting parallels to our own time. The critical innovation in late antiquity was the adoption of monotheistic religions to strengthen multi-ethnic or multi-tribal organizations: the Roman Empire and what became the Islamic Caliphate.

Hey Dave, someone has posted her academic qualifications down the page, but let me just add this: these people may be crazy and wrong, but they are NOT lazy. I see them up close, and they are sincere, earnest, and ruthlessly competitive. To get a paid, permanent job in grievance studies you need to attend workshops, constantly progress, and write, write, write. It may be garbage, but there are 50 postgrads fighting to publish it.
Personally, I want our Sophie to get a tenured position at Stanford or Harvard and require every undergrad to take her course.

There will always be a need to intellectually dress up the power game. So there will always be a demand for the pseudo-intellectual "theory" to justify it. And there will always be an academic school of nonsense to fill this demand. The real question is how any thinking person could actually find it persuasive.

Mostly agree, but I have to take exception to your characterization of certain minorities, e.g., the Shakers. As a fully paid up member of the Shaker Liberation Front (ShaLF), I have to point out that the Shakers lived and worked in self-sufficient communities that contributed many innovations to larger society: mail-order seeds, the modern whisk broom, and a spartan early American aesthetic. (Okay, self-sufficient except for outsourcing that procreation stuff.)
For the record, generally when i'm speaking about these outgroups--Shakers or Jews or whomever--i'm not trying to deny that various people in them do useful labor. (The gypsies are an exception, which is why they are not to be discussed.)

Too apocalyptic. There’s a lot of ruin in a nation. In Medieval Europe, a significant fraction of the female population was locked up in nunneries (and a significant portion of wealth was devoted to building them and churches, etc.) and it did not kill the society. A a certain % of women in every society can’t deal with the complexity of having a family – it’s just as well that these women excuse themselves from the gene pool. Just think of these modern day academies as religious institutions and the devotees as religious fanatics and it will be fine. Yes, it’s a warped religion but a lot of religions are warped (and even more violent than our secular religion).
Also, let's not minimize the fact young smart men were pushed into being presumably celibate, with an impact on the European genepool. Is that really true? Sources? It was my impression that by the time your children were fully grown in the Middle Ages you were nearing the end of the average lifespan. I think that older women were more often beguines – they lived in (or adjacent to, in a beguinage) convent settings but did not take vows. Basically the beguines were sort of the “cat lady” demographic – women who worked and never married.

I think that the behaviors we now see inside the Hajnal line (low fertility, many women never reproducing) have deep rooted cultural and maybe even genetic sources such that they didn’t just appear overnight in our generation. It’s my guess that the trends we are seeing now (the “cat lady” phenomenon) are really deeply rooted in Western society such that the Shakers were the “cat ladies” of their day (and the beguines of an earlier day) – there is a certain % of people who are just not interested in reproducing and that’s fine (as long as the % doesn’t get too high and the society doesn’t allow itself to be replaced demographically with a more fertile group). The population of 19th century America kept going up despite the (small) number of people who became Shakers. And the Shaker community , despite the lack of reproduction (BTW, were there “accidents” among the Shakers?) was even able to sustain itself (for a while, until social conditions changed) by new recruitment and adopting orphans, etc.

The modern ultra-Orthodox have this crazy situation (both here and in Israel) where the men don’t work at all and devote themselves full time to religious study. This is not at all normal – it’s an outgrowth of the modern welfare state. Traditionally “rabbi” was an avocation, not a full time occupation, any more than Benjamin Franklin was a full time scientist. Maimonides was a physician. Rashi is believed to have been a wine merchant. Etc.
The other situation that you had was that sometime the women would run the business so that the men could spend more time studying. Since business savvy genes are not sex linked, having a momma who was good at business is just as good as having a dad who is, especially if dad is really good at abstract thinking and making arguments. So, just as “full communism” proposes to deal with the problem that some people starve while others have plenty, by abolishing private property entirely, in favor of a vague collective that will decide everything for everybody, Lewis perhaps proposes to deal with the problems that some families have, by abolishing families entirely, in favor of “taking collective responsibility for children, rather than only caring for the ones we share DNA with” – that’s a quote from the book blurb.
Of course society already does this in a variety of ways – the welfare system, the family courts, public education. But Lewis is an enthusiast for sex change and surrogate pregnancy. Once, while channel surfing, I caught a little bit of the movie Fury, starring Brad Pitt. It was a self-conscious attempt to make a movie that was brutal and grotesque. I’m not opposed to that. War is brutal and grotesque; it is organized murder. I prefer war movies that do not shy away from the realities of war, such as Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket, Black Hawk Down, etc. However one thing that caught my eye about this film was one of the characters: a vile, dirty, utterly foul hillbilly, played by…………………a Jewish guy named Jon Bernthal. No knock on Bernthal; he’s a good actor and hey, he’s an actor, it’s a gig, he took it – I don’t blame him. But the implied insult in the role was quite striking. No goy would ever be allowed to play a Jew in a corresponding way – as a vile, dirty, entirely loathesome caricature of that ethnic group.
Yeah – we know – the guy who actually coined the term was some kind of vaguely neo-nazi and not so vaguely a child molester. Never-the-less, that aphorism still seems to contain a lot of truth. Is what he said wrong? If so, tell us how. Lots of true phrases were coined by people who were not very good people.
In this particular case, though, you have a quote that’s very frequently attributed to one of the greatest Enlightenment thinkers but was actually coined by a neo nazi pedophile during the 1990s. That’s just so freakin embarrassing that it makes me think the quote ought to be retired, even if you agree with it. It’s simply too tarnished by its association with the original author and by its long history of misattribution. I know people around here scoff at the notion of “punching up,” and they’re certainly right that the standard is unevenly applied at times. I do think it’s still the prevailing social norm though (but that’s too big an argument to get into now).

There’s a lot of evidence to indicate that the attack on the Liberty was made in the full knowledge that it was an American ship. As there was never a thorough investigation of the attack by the US government, it isn’t possible to say for certain. The Johnson administration did everything it could to cover up the facts of the incident.
A lot of people nowadays don’t even know about it. What would they think if they did? The “Muh Troops” crowd of patriotards might have to reassess some of their World view if they knew about the incident, or more about it.
