Scientific American has changed a lot from when W.H. Auden used to subscribe to it. From Scientific American:

How to Unlearn Racism
Implicit bias training isn’t enough. What actually works?

October 1, 2020
AUTHOR: Abigail Libers is a freelance journalist and editor based in New York. Credit: Nick Higgins

In February 2016 I sat in a conference room on the Upper East Side of Manhattan with about 35 other people attempting to answer what seemed like a straightforward question: What is racism?

I—a white, able-bodied, cis-gendered woman in my 30s—thought that racism was prejudice against an individual because of race or ethnicity. That’s why I had signed up for the Undoing Racism Workshop, a two-and-a-half-day antiracist training that analyzes race and power structures in the U.S.: I wanted to gain a better understanding of why some people have so much contempt toward those who are different from them. My yearning for answers came from personal experience with discrimination as a Jewish woman and the daughter of immigrants; my parents fled to the U.S. from the former Soviet Union in 1979. Growing up in a small town in upstate New York followed by an even smaller, more rural town in Georgia, I was picked on and often felt “othered.”

The workshop was hosted by the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond (PISAB), an organization that was founded 40 years ago by community organizers who wanted to create a more equitable society by addressing the root causes of racism. Our leaders—a Black man, a white woman and a Latina woman—called on each of us to share our definitions of racism. People’s responses were all over the map, from “a mean-spirited, close-minded way of thinking” to “discrimination based on someone’s skin color or ethnic background.” The trainers validated each of our responses before pointing out how varied they were and explaining that few of us had identified racism as a web of institutional power and oppression based on skin color. Not having a simple or agreed-on definition of racism makes it easier to keep racism in place. To undo racism, they said, we need a common language that ties together individual and systemic factors. Hearing racism described as a power hierarchy was eye-opening for me. Having been marginalized myself, I thought I was sensitive toward other groups who faced discrimination. I thought I got it.

It goes on in this vein for some time.

But as many of them were converted to Christianity and the Age of Enlightenment took off in the 1700s, religion lost its legitimizing power.

Instead “science” was used to justify the enslavement of Africans and the genocide of Indigenous peoples, which had already been occurring in British colonies for more than a century. Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, a German anthropologist and comparative anatomist, is known for proposing one of the earliest classifications of the human race, which he wrote about in the late 1700s.

His measurement of skulls from around the world led him to divide humans into five groups, which were later simplified by anthropologists into three categories: Caucasoids, Mongoloids and Negroids. It did not seem to matter that some prominent scientists, including Charles Darwin, dismissed a biological basis for race over the next century.

This would have come as a surprise to the author of On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life.

Anti-racism training hasn’t failed, it just hasn’t been tried hard enough:

Trainings on implicit bias, diversity and antiracism may be limited in their efficacy in part because they tend to be brief one-off events. Promising research by Devine in 2013 showed that prejudices and biases can be more successfully unlearned through longer-term intervention. The 12-week longitudinal study was based on the premise that implicit bias is like a habit that can be broken through the following steps: becoming aware of implicit bias, developing concern about the effects of that bias and using strategies to reduce bias—specifically, ones that replace biased reactions with responses that reflect one’s nonprejudiced goals. …

For Fleming, who has educated thousands of university students, teaching implicit bias within the context of a comprehensive, three-month course “is far more effective than being dragged into a diversity training for an afternoon,” she says.

Perhaps whites should be sent for long-term anti-racism training to quiet places in the country where they could concentrate on overcoming their bad attitudes. We could call them, say, “camps.”

You can take the journalist out of the Soviet Union, but you can’t take the Soviet Union out of the journalist.

This realization didn’t hit me until I took PISAB’s workshop for a second time in 2019. I had signed up at the urging of Stoop Nilsson, a social worker and racial reeducation coach who shows white people how to become antiracist leaders in their communities.

Do you ever get the impression that anti-racism training is a new multi-level marketing pyramid scheme?

Stoop Nilsson, I’m happy to say, looks like the synthesizer player in a 1982 New Wave band. Here’s Stoop’s sales pitch:

Stoop is a white, gender-expansive, queer, community organizer, creator, and strategist with two decades of people-engagement in non-profit, state, educational, and community settings. Stoop’s organizing has/is focused on anti-racism, accountability, civil rights, harm reduction/recovery, LGBTQ advocacy, grassroots/grasstops leadership development, and community mobilization.

Stoop loves digging deep into white culture, racial identity development, the racialzation of wealth/poverty, and facilitates multi-racial and racial affinity group conversations. It’s Stoop’s intention to cultivate freedom and expand access to a clearer racial justice analysis through the practice of building honest, authentic, & messy beloved community.

Back to Scientific American:

Working with Nilsson is helping me create a positive racial identity of my own—as both a white person and a Russian Jew. Our country prides itself on being a melting pot, but much gets lost in the assimilation to whiteness and white supremacy culture. Markers of ethnic identity such as language, food, culture and music are discouraged; those from a non–Western European heritage are often vilified. In my family, my parents were so committed to learning English that they hardly ever spoke Russian around the house. I never learned it. It saddens me that I can’t speak to my own parents in their native language and that I still know so little about our heritage.

I’ve given this lady writer a hard time, so I’ll let her finish the post with a genuinely moving sentence:

Recently my mom became frustrated trying to remember a word in English to describe how she was feeling; I worry that her last words will be in Russian, and I’ll have no idea what they mean.

I think the thought process behind a howler like that is something like this: “I don’t know anything about Darwinism, but Charles Darwin is one of the good guys, so obviously he must have had all the opinions of a 21st century liberal. If he didn’t, he’d have been cancelled already, wouldn’t he?”

  7. Being a journalist means questioning things. It means asking “why?” and looking for motives behind people’s words and actions.

“Why are they telling me this?” “Is there an agenda?” “Is there a profit motive?”

The woman who wrote this article didn’t question a thing. she was like a naive 6-year-old listening to a sermon before her first Holy Communion. They said; she believed.

This article isn’t journalism. It’s public relations.

  8. Maybe Stoop would agree to get paid to organize a year-long program everyone has to attend following senior year of high school, before they could get their diploma or a job.

People forced to endure three months of this garbage are more likely to say anything to avoid having to endure it again. At the same time, it probably causes more resentment than anything else.

  10. Workshops hardly ever work.

Then, she- as expected – equates race identity or consciousness with racism. This is the same mistake I see all the time: many persons have/had a strong national identity (Tolstoy, Orwell, Schopenhauer, Marx, Pasternak, Whitman ..)- but that doesn’t make them automatically nationalists or national chauvinists.

As for Nilsson- I never understood what “queer” stood for. Gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual…that’s OK. But what queers do & what do they want? Which is their identity?

    Don’t get it.

I—a white, able-bodied, cis-gendered woman in my 30s [probably unmarried, no kids, two cats, mommy or daddy issues, etc.]

White people’s dominance in our systems is why you may have heard people refer to the U.S. as a white supremacist society in recent months. In this context, white supremacy does not refer to hate groups such as neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan but rather an entire system where one group has all the advantages

Pray tell, which group exactly? Are Jews that tone-deaf, or are they just the Masters of Hypocrisy? I mean, really, talking about “White people’s dominance” and not ever mentioning Jews takes a whole new level of “chutzpah”. Sure, Wall Street and Hollywood are “white”, just as this woman is now “white”. But then if someone complains about them, they are not “white” anymore, they are “Jews” and it’s “anti-semitism”, not “fighting against White Privilege” anymore.

And of course, even the fault that she was lazy or not interested enough to learn Russian, is somehow the fault of “assimilation to whiteness and white supremacy culture”… And not hers or her parents’.

    I mean, really…

  15. Art Deco says:

    From Scientific American:

Absolutely none of this seems an honest and understandable reaction to social stimuli. It’s the word-merchant sector distinguishing itself from those it fancies are its inferiors.

Some years ago, Dennis Wholey had on his program a man from a trade association called ‘the Color Association of the United States’. He had a few assertions (which he said were verified and verifiable) of interest: (1) color preferences correlate with personality traits; (2) there is such a thing as fashion, and it’s not an artifact of marketing activity – sudden mass upsurges in preferences that come and go; (3) you cannot market everything (“we’ve never been able to sell blue refrigerators”).

In re Scientific American, it was trashed by its owners and editors 20+ years ago. I remember talking to a faculty member who’d bought a subscription to share with his daughter. He was dumbstruck at how dopey it was compared to what he’d remembered – closer to Omni or New Scientist that to the Scientific American of 1985. I had that conversation around about 1997.

  17. “Working with Nilsson is helping me create a positive racial identity of my own….”

That’s the first time I’ve ever heard having a white ‘positive racial identity’ as being one of the goals of racial bias training. I guess she means the positive identity lies in being really negative about other white people. The opposite of a positive black racial identity, in fact.

Personally, if I went on racial awareness training with Nilsson, I’d be thinking something more along these lines:

  22. Economic forces are one factor behind the increasing wokeness of scientific magazines.
It became noticeable already in the 2000’s and it’s not limited to the US. I sometimes picked up a copy of the French magazine “Science et Avenir”. I noticed over time that it became more ideological. The worst articles in this respect are usually written by female journalists and when you google their name, they have no scientific background and studied literature. The magazine probably can not afford anything else than poorly paid female journalists with limited scientific background.

  29. Libers seems unaware of the children of immigrants from Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Norway, and Sweden, few of whom speak their parents’ mother tongue. Most Russian Jewish immigrants settle in Brooklyn, where they can and may pass their lives having little contact (apart from tv broadcasts) with anyone besides other Russian Jews (and city social workers.) The medical clinics they visit have translators. They can carry handheld translator devices. And the assimilated Russian Jewish (indeed, almost all Jewish) NYer’s she meets are overwhelmingly ultra-liberal. Did she even attend that most pluralistic of environments, the public school? Of course her sympathies and rationales stand with other insular, self-isolating minorities, and currently the most touted are black ones. How did the editorial staff of the Scientific American select this commentator of limited experience and perspective for a contribution? If the known pattern obtains, it is because there are ultra-liberal Jews doing the selecting. Is it insensitive to observe that a handheld translator might render a mother’s last words almost simultaneous with their utterance?

But perhaps job security for anti-racist trainers is the main problem anti-racist trainers want to solve.

    “Having been marginalized myself,”

    LOL.

  35. AndrewR says:

Screw her. Does she not know any kids of “Western European” immigrants? One of my best friends is the son of a Swiss German couple who moved here in the 1970s before having kids. The parents always made it a point to speak English at home. My friend and his brother know some Schwyzerdütsch but they’re hardly fluent and their kids know almost nothing.

Similarly, my [American] sister taught English in Czechia, learned fluent Czech and married a Czech guy. They live in the US and try to teach their kids Czech but the kids, 10 and 12, are passive speakers at best and have very little ability to speak it. It’s not like they live in an area with a lot of Czechs. They are fully immersed in a monolingual Anglophone community, so speaking Czech is truly optional for them, and requires patience, time and energy they don’t always have.

Back to this abhorrent Jewess: it’s 2020, so there is an abundance of easily available resources, many of them absolutely free, for anyone who wants to learn a new language, especially such a widely-spoken and globally-significant language like Russian. This includes free websites where one can easily find a language partner to trade conversations with. For instance, she could, easily and without paying a cent, partner up with one of thousands of Russian speakers wanting to learn English and talk over the internet, doing, for instance, an hour of Russian lessons/convo in exchange for an hour of English lessons/convo.

And she’s based in “New York” [I’m gonna go ahead and assume she means New York City, and that, like many people, she just has such contempt for the rest of the state that she erases them completely]. Nowhere else on earth outside of the former Soviet states can one find so many Russian speakers and Russian teachers, if one chooses to hire one (which, again, can be helpful but is not at all necessary to learn Russian).

She also clearly has a lot of free time, if she’s choosing to take 20 hour seminars in order to learn the most up-to-date trends in anti-whiteness. She has ZERO excuse to not spend some time learning Russian, if she is really that concerned about mama’s last words being incomprehensible to her.

So no, this is just more crying out in pain as she strikes, so please do not allow yourself to be “moved” by her histrionic last sentence.

“Do you ever get the impression that anti-racism training is a new multi-level marketing pyramid scheme?”

    “New?”

Combating Racism Through Training: A Review of Approaches to Race Training in Organisations (Canada, 1991)

“The origins of race training in the USA can be traced back to the mid 1960s,
initially with the passing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and with a further
impetus in response to the Kerner Commission Report on the civil disorders in
American cities of 1967. The Civil Rights Act laid down federal requirements of
non-discrimination and equal treatment for all citizens regardless of race or
ethnic origin, and “opened up a floodgate of federal dollars to support race
training” (Coffey 1987: 116). There emerged a large body of trainers who
operated both within and outside formal organisations, who consisted mainly of
civil rights activists, psychologists and psychiatrists, and who provided a
service designed to enable organisations to meet federal government requirements
flowing from the 1964 legislation. Following the Kerner Commission Report, with
its indictment of the degree of prejudice and ignorance among whites with regard
to their black fellow Americans, the promotion of awareness and sensitivity
among whites became a more predominant training goal. All of these early
programmes tended to focus upon group dynamics and personal attitudes, and were
strongly influenced by the then popular T-group and encounter-group movements,
the essential philosphy of which was located in humanistic psychology (Rogers
1973). Especially in the so-called ‘sensitivity training’, trainers worked
mainly at the affective level, using a mixture of confrontational and

Some parents make a point of never speaking the Old Country language in front of their kids in which case it is not the kid’s fault that they never learn it. They want to embrace their new identity as Americans and for their kids to have a fully American identity. It’s not something I agree with personally (it’s great to have bilingual kids and awkward to talk to your spouse in a non-native language when you can probably express yourself better in your native language) but I understand why some people do it. The other possibility is that only her mother is a Russian speaker, in which case it is even less likely that the kid picked it up.

My parents were fluent in both Yiddish and Polish but they did not speak Polish regularly to me or to each other (unless they didn’t want me to understand something) so as a consequence I only learned a handful of words of Polish growing up. Later on, when my widowed mother had Polish caretaker ladies, I learned a little more, but mostly on the level of being able to read a grocery list – bread, milk, cheese, coffee, flour, etc.

I don’t know. Maybe, just maybe the parents wanted their daughter to leave the legacy of being a Russian Jew completely behind. Perhaps they understood the hell the Jews had wrecked on Russia, felt a twitch of shame and sincerely wanted a fresh start for their daughter in a new land.

If that was the case could you honestly blame them?

On the hand lets be more honest. If the Libers family had left Russia 30-40 years ago perhaps they are simply like the latest generation of Neocon Jews, sieving with fanatical hatred at all things Russian. Nonetheless, they can not deny the many things worthwhile, if not superior, in Christian Russian language and culture they left behind. So now and again it pains them.

In that case are we supposed to feel sorry for them?

Both Brother Nathaniel Kapner and E Michael Jones talk about this a lot. Jews get kicked out of a country. Flee to a new land. Toy with the idea of making a clean start. Since they reject salvation by embracing Logos/Jesus Christ, they find themselves falling back into old habits. Or is it following the same old protocols?

(By the way see E. Michael Jones’ latest video on St Louis on Bitchute it is one of his best.)

It is pretty clear the path that Ms Libers has chosen, that of destroying her new home and inflicting White Genocide on the very people who granted her family refuge.

And were are expected to feel sorry for her?

But another big part are immigrants who resent the strains needed for adaptation/adjustment/assimilation. It surely is hard work, but basically inevitable.

This can be shown on all levels of immigration. For example I found German immigrants into the U.S. after 1945 who resented the fact that their boss forbade them to speak their native language at the workplace – something we would now expect from Turks/Arabs immigrating into Germany.
So what we would need is “immigration education” – telling prospective immigrants what strains expect them and that most of them are inevitable.

That reminds me of this blog post that talks about a curious incedent, when, in the 1970s, the scientific establishment abruptly changed the party line on Darwin.

Apparently, the idea of evolution by natural selection was determined to be problematic for the race egalitarianism project, but it was impossible to erase Darwin from the history books. Therefore, they decided that Darwin was famous for the theory that all animals have a common ancestor, not for natural selection. New textbooks produced after the decision all proclaimed the new narrative without acknowledging the existence of the previous narrative that Lamarck had proposed common descent and Darwin natural selection.

So Darwin’s reputation, important as a tool to ridicule creationists and other deviants, was saved.

Natural selection has since come back into vogue, and the whole incident seems to have passed mostly unnoticed.

Meanwhile, one of the black bosses was there to make sure everyone was taking this seminar seriously. Therefore, I had to come up with an answer that would fit into the theme of what they were looking for, but would also allow me to look myself in the mirror. So I told them the best part about being white was that pop culture was made for me and that I had a variety of choices; the radio had a black station and a Spanish station, but every other one was geared toward white people. Television has BET and UPN and Univision and Telemundo, but all the others are for white people.

The house her family occupied is at this time appraised by real estate sites at $400,000 in value and has 2,800 sq ft of interior space. Other addresses associated with her family are in Gwinnett County and Fulton County and indubitably suburban. Prior to that she lived adjacent to Glens Falls, NY in a home with 2,300 sq feet of space (currently appraised at $300,000 in value) and in another with 1,400 sq ft of space (with a current appraised value of $200,000). About 40,000 people live in the tract development around Glens Falls. Her mother and father were 23 and 27 respectively when they entered the US and it wouldn’t surprise me to discover he worked for the medical device manufacturer located in Glens Falls.

It’s just that some of these things nowadays are still considered typical juvenile bullying and others are considered akin to war crimes.

And #2 because (see AD’s post above) she didn’t group up on the UWS or in Brooklyn but in some semi-rural places that were not exactly loaded with Jews such that Jewishness would have been enough of a distinction to be used as a hook for #1. Almost all youths have conflicts with people and episodes of humiliation. Only an odd minority are routinely dumped on and ostracised by their peers. It has little to do with anything PC or not PC and a lot to do with their individual qualities, though I’ve seen cases where the youth’s status problems seemed like a random curse.

Speaking somewhat impressionistically, I don’t think people who actually have this in their past are at all given to discussing it in any venue. One exception I can recall is Jonathan Eig of the Wall Street Journal, who once wrote a feature in the paper of a school mate who had bullied him assiduously decades earlier. (The schoolmate had died and his brother had agreed to answer questions for the profile). I think there were some self-references in the article, but the bulk of it was about the man’s life and career in the years after the two were acquainted; the ‘he beat the cra!p out of me in 1971’ was an explanation of why he’d starting researching the man.

Kids do indeed latch on to anything they see as weird or different, and may well make fun of it. What one kid perceives as being picked on, another will see as teasing, and another as joking around (depending on how many older brothers they have). Being picked on, I would think, has more to do with aggressive and unrelenting bullying, with implied threats of violence, and sometimes actual violence. Not making fun of someone’s shoes.

I’m not saying that it’s fun for kids to be teased, but my recollections of high school — and I went to a very nice high school — are that the most kids must have felt at times teased, put down, excluded, or to use her terminology, “othered.” Some children are highly sensitive to this type of thing. Part of growing up is just learning to care a lot less about what other people think of you.

If you don’t think your kids can handle two languages, it tells me a lot about your mental capacity. My kids, born and raised in the US, speak two languages natively, and learned a third in school at a decent level. No children of immigrants I’ve ever known have ever failed to learn English while growing up in the States, whether their native language was spoken at home or not. I know a family where one parent spoke 12 languages, and the kid spoke at least 4.

Jack D’s “embracing their new identity as Americans” argument is bogus in this case, because Soviet Jews aren’t really interested in embracing any other identity. I know a lot of them, many who grew up in the States, and none has fully shed their Soviet Jewish identity (though some avoid speaking Russian and virtually all abhor Russians, Ukrainians et al.). They always remain Special-Americans, just like they were Special-Russians or Special-Whatevers back in the USSR. In their writings, “my parents were refugees from the Soviet Union…” always comes up, usually in the second or third paragraph.

A Nature article published this past August explained why the U.S. was caught flat-footed in its response to COVID-19: despite the fact that government officials, academics and business leaders have participated in dozens of pandemic simulations over the past two decades, none of the exercises “explored the consequences of a White House sidelining its own public health agency,” wrote journalists Amy Maxmen and Jeff Tollefson.

This leads to Two decades of pandemic war games failed to account for Donald Trump

Looking forward, many hope that the mistakes in handling the coronavirus will spur a fundamental reset in how US policymakers think about pandemic preparedness. This means restructuring health systems, empowering public-health leaders and ensuring that all components function in unison in the event of a crisis.

What does that even mean? I blame Star Trek for people having such crappy ideas about the possibility of perfect execution in a random, low-information and constantly changing setting.

They did all the simulations which left people “rattled” (as the currently en vogue saying goes) without considering that politics, ass-covering, differences in opinion and inability to gauge outcomes with perfect foresight would cause random problems?

I’m just finishing up Dostoevsky’s novel, Demons, and it is bone-chilling how good it is. He was truly an artist. He was also deeply insightful. When Demons was published, the Bolshevik genocide of white Christians in Russia was still nearly fifty years in the future, but he clearly foresaw the danger and identified and condemned the social currents that made it possible. Those same currents are swirling around us today.

The Bolsheviks’ mass slaughter was explicitly dysgenic, targeting the most intelligent Russians and their children, and while the Russians truly produced some of the greatest literature in the world, I’ve found myself wondering whether they are still capable.

One piece of Russian writing, though perhaps the most powerful account of human depravity ever written, is strangely unavailable. It is The Red Terror in Russia 1918 – 1923 by historian Serge Melgunov. I’ve never read a book where I couldn’t read more than about ten pages at a time before I would have to take a week or two away from it–it’s that horrifying.

Everyone should read it. If nothing else, it is the perfect argument against all those who think they can safely ride out the current political turmoil behind locked doors if they just keep their mouths shut. We can’t. We must, all of us, actively resist.

With a translation of Tolstoy, all I get is the story, not the art – maybe the translator’s music – so I’m sticking with English writers, as far as fiction is concerned.

  193. @anon

Jack D’s “embracing their new identity as Americans” argument is bogus in this case, because Soviet Jews aren’t really interested in embracing any other identity.

Anon, i think you’re waving away the complexity and individuality of the immigrant experience.

Individual immigrants are just all over the map on this stuff. Many sincerely come to their new country wanting to assimilate. The very act of leaving to come here is an immigrant–revealed preference–admitting that my ancestors built a better nation than his ancestors. Many honestly want to fit in and most importantly have their children fit in and become Americans. (Or Canadians, Australians, etc.)

Others, have lots of ambivalence. Or become ambivalent when they get here, and don’t fit in as well as they thought they would, or simply miss the old country and their culture. So they jack up the cultural stuff and tell their kids how wonderful/superior/special it was back in X, Y, Z. The correct thing for those people–go back.

Sure, Jews are something of special case because the Jewish identity is–at least prior to Israel–transnational, and they are always–again with the exception of Israel–in a distinct oppositional situation–a separate tribe–to the nation’s majority. They are “the chosen people”. Nonetheless, i’d imagine at least some of the ex-Soviet Jews coming to the US–instead of Israel–did come with the idea of just leaving it all behind and becoming Americans.

I’m no authority on Jewish history, but my impression was that a quite a few Jews in Western and Central Europe–a distinct minority, but non-trivial numbers–in the 19th through early 20th century were in fact chucking their tribal identity in favor of just becoming a normal national citizens. (What should have been forced centuries early–“our way or the highway”.) Some Christianized, some just dumped the Jewish thing. Many out-married. This process was much less advanced in the East, where Jewish populations were larger, ergo relations more fraught, identities more tribal. The Holocaust was a huge step backwards in this process–re-energizing Jewish identity (creating Israel) and upping the paranoia factor–with cause. Still i’d imagine plenty of Jews leaving the ex-Soviet Union would be more or less “done with it”, ready to de-tribalize and move on.

But one thing that happens … Jews get to America and realize that their previous Ostjuden cousins had launched a successful coup in America and created a social system where being a minority was hip, cool, special and better and the native American white majority they thought they were going to assimilate with was officially boring, soulless, white bread, “racist!” and scheduled to be replaced. “Diversity is our greatest strength!” … so why assimilate.

Even if that isn’t really what the immigrant parents desired … their kids sure as hell get the message and they go out looking for their diverse and oppressed specialness. And sure ‘nough–it’s there!

It’s almost like Jewish minoritarianism … is a really bad ideology for any “nation of immigrants”.

I’m only in my mid-thirties, and I’ve already been roped into taking care of my grandmother and (to a lesser extent) my mother. Grandma is in a nursing home, but Mom is a constant nuisance who calls me several times a day.

To be honest, neither of them is worth the time or effort I’ve put into them. My mother, in particular, has made many foolish decisions over the years. Is it my fault that she never made adequate preparations for her own retirement? Is it my fault that she screwed up every relationship she ever had? No, but she’s an expert at guilt-tripping me and she knows I’ll always help her in the end, no matter how badly she’s screwed me over in the past.

Some years ago, I found a letter that my grandfather wrote to my grandmother with the notation “read after I’m gone.” He advised her never to lend money to anyone, not even her children, no matter how badly they claimed they needed it. (Sadly, she didn’t take his advice and allowed leeching relatives to drain her bank accounts.)

At the time, I thought his attitude was a bit heartless, but now I realize that he had a good point. Your children don’t have the right to suck you dry, and neither do your parents.

At some point, you have to say, “Thanks for raising me, Mom, but I don’t owe you anything anymore, and I can’t be responsible for your failures in life.”

I can’t think of a single person in my family with whom I would associate if I had a choice.

I think you are missing out on the fact that ethnic and religious identity was ruthlessly suppressed in the Soviet Union – precisely the “our way or the highway” approach except without the choice of the highway. So most Soviet Jews come here without much attachment to Jewish identity, though some reconnect when they get here. But I have never seen as much pork sausage in my life as they sell in Russian (Jewish) supermarkets in NE Philly (where all the Russian Jews live).

You are right that upwardly mobile Western and Central European Jews before Hitler were well on their way to assimilation. It was considered kind of a normal thing that if you wanted to have an elite career in government service, academia, etc. that you were generally expected to convert – that was just part of the deal. It wasn’t like Spain where you HAD to convert. You could remain Jewish but certain doors would remain closed to you if you did. Even if you stayed Jewish, German (Reform) synagogues were sort of like churches – no Jesus stuff but you had a choir, a pipe organ, etc. and no more keeping kosher or speaking Yiddish. BUT, ironically, Germany, where this process was well along (and where the Jewish population was much smaller than in Poland), was the place where Hitler arose. I don’t know whether this was a coincidence or whether subconsciously Germans felt more threatened by Jews, who were competing with them for the same jobs (and even the same women) than Poles, where Jews and Poles largely had their own spheres which on a good day were symbiotic.

    No, definitely aware of this.

Again, this is not an area i have much knowledge, but one of the reasons i’d suggested–disagreeing with anon–that ex-Soviet Jews might come here ready to chuck the Jewish identity is that they might simply not have had a very strong one in the Soviet Union. Yeah, the ID card says “Jewish” … but who cares … let’s go someplace where there’s nothing on the ID card, where we’re just American.

If Jewish identity is strong–Israel. That would more or less be my thinking if i was in that boat. If i really feel Jewish–that’s my bread and butter in life–then Israel is where i belong, not going to America.

… was the place where Hitler arose. I don’t know whether this was a coincidence or whether subconsciously Germans felt more threatened by Jews,

Interesting. I generally focus on the obvious–losing the Great War, the “stab in the back” myth, the Jewish association with communism, leftist subversion. But these other psychological factors could be in play. Diversity isn’t a strength–it’s usually a source of contention and conflict.

Bottom line: Hitler was a particularly weird bird, able to operate in a particularly weird situation. leading to another go at German imperialism. But overall the West failed miserably in 1914 to deal with the built up pressures created by British, French imperialism locking up much of the world while old empires staggered and more dynamic America and Germany and Japan rose. Not unlike tectonic plates binding, then snapping loose … we had an earthquake. Disastrous century for white people–tremendous achievement, tremendous unnecessary waste.

the “stab in the back” myth, the Jewish association with communism, leftist subversion.

These are excuses for anti-Semitism, not reasons. There was no “stab in the back”. It was a myth, as you say. Most German Jews were patriotic Germans. As for the Jewish association with communism, yes it existed but most German Jews were not Communists nor vice versa. If you hate Bolsheviks, then hate Bolsheviks, not Jews.

Stan, i don’t know your story–so maybe you already have this covered, but some personal advice:

Make sure that your grandmother’s old age and your mother’s fecklessness, doesn’t keep you from doing what you are on this earth to do–find a good woman and build your own family with her.

I’ve explained this to my kids: “I can never directly repaid what my parents have done for me. And you won’t directly repay what i’ve done to launch you. The arrows of debt and responsibility don’t balance across generations. You’ll repay me by having your own children, building your own family.”

And i’ve told them that that–their children–are where their fundamental responsibility lies:

“Mom and I want to be part of your lives, get to be grandmom and granddad. But we are not your primary responsibility. If there’s ever a tradeoff between you having another child, or fulfilling your responsibilities to your children, your family life and taking care of me, my happiness … put me on the ice floe!”

Hatch, match, dispatch. Don’t miss the “match” part.

Here is a definition I see for transmaculine.
    https://gender.wikia.org/wiki/Transmasculine

Transmasculine is a term used to describe transgender people who were assigned female at birth, but identify with masculinity to a greater extent than with femininity. Usually transmasculine people try to appear stereotypically masculine in terms in their gender expression in order to create social recognition of their dominant male identity.

Honestly, I don’t think that this buys you much in the first place, not enough to justify the risk. There is no mag-lev train to begin with. Note that Krug was Jewish and she thought it wise to claim otherwise instead of claiming the imaginary mag-lev ticket to which she was fully entitled.

I remember reading a journal article that compared the reactions in scientific journals to those in the normal media to The Bell Curve. The point was that the reactions in scientific journals were generally favorable, in that the book was taken seriuosly and considered to overall be legitimate science, while consumer publications went the opposite direction.

The one scientific journal that was negative on the book was … Scientific American. So as late as the mid-1990s, when this reaction was written, Scientific American, if you had to classify it as a scientific journal or a consumer magazine, went in the former category, at least in the judgment of the writer of this piece.

I remember the magazine from the late 1960s and early 1970s because my engineer father subscribed to it. It seemed really boring and too geeky to me, other than the Martin Gardiner columns, but I didn’t know how the articles were chosen.

Again, by 1994, Scientific American was not translating professionals’ work for general audiences. It was a popular science magazine fit for your dentists’ office.

The academic journals which would have reviewed The Bell Curve would have been in psychology, sociology, and perhaps some of the other social research disciplines. It might have gotten favorable reviews in journals which cover psychometrics. DK. American Behavioral Scientist gave over a whole issue to a symposium about it. I read some of it. Believe me, the contributors were not uniformly positive.
