Migrant flash mobs make for some strange politics. Last September, the elected government of Hungary was excoriated as “nationalist,” “dictatorial,” and “anti-European” for trying to enforce E.U. rules to defend the E.U., while the German Chancellor was lionized as “European” for arbitrarily trashing E.U. procedures and inviting a million Muslims into the E.U. on her personal whim. Lately, Nicaragua, ruled by 1980s leftist Sandinista Daniel Ortega, has been defending American borders by not letting a Cuban flash mob through its Central American country on the way to getting one dry foot on American soil.

Finally, however, the Sandinistas have given up defending America’s borders. From the BBC:

Central American nations have reached an agreement to allow several thousand Cuban migrants stranded in Costa Rica for over a month to continue their journey towards the United States. The migrants will be airlifted to El Salvador and put on buses, which will take them to the US.

American legislation gives Cuban migrants preferential treatment. If they arrive at the US border by land they are allowed to enter the country and apply for residency. Those who are intercepted at sea are sent back, under the special immigration policy known as “wet foot, dry foot”.

Many Cuban migrants fear that the thaw in relations between Washington and Havana may put an end to the preferential treatment given to them.

So, it couldn’t last, but for putting up a month-long resistance to the next immivasion of the United States, Daniel Ortega wins the Standing Athwart History, Yelling Stop award for 2015.

  1. The USA’s Presidential election will be a referendum on massive illegal immigration.

If the electorate elects Hillary Clinton, then we will have open borders forever.

If the electorate are only given the choice of Hillary, Cruz, Rubio,Fiorina or any of the other establishment candidates, we will get massive illegal immigration. Both parties are totally onboard with allowing illegal immigration. There isn't much difference between the 2 atleast when it comes to open-borders.
Maybee Trump might do something , but who knows?? The GOP won't let Trump be their candidate though so moot point.

    No we will not.

It means that the resolution will be much more costly in both blood and treasure. But the open borders and immigration idiocy will be resolved to a rational, practical border and immigration policy.

As John Derbyshire has mentioned, there are 100 million Chinese ready to move here tomorrow. There are at least that many in India. If you add Africa you are easily at 300 million. Do you really think that even the idiots on the Left will tolerate that?

Once the Left realizes that immigration won't ensure their one-party-rule-by-white-Liberals pipe dream it will be brought to a screeching halt.

Here are the bullet points of Ted Cruz’s position on immigration.

    SECURE THE BORDER

    * Build a wall that works …. I will complete the wall.

    * Triple the number of Border Patrol agents.

    * Increase vital aerial surveillance and other technology along the border.

    * Finish the biometric tracking system at our nation’s ports of entry.

    RESTORE THE RULE OF LAW

    * End President Obama’s illegal amnesty. …. I will rescind each and every one …

    * Increase deportations and end catch-and-release.

    * End sanctuary policies, sign Kate’s Law, and deport criminal immigrants.

    * Prohibit illegal immigrants from receiving financial benefits and strengthen E-Verify.

REFORM LEGAL IMMIGRATION TO PROTECT AMERICANS

    * Suspend the issuance of all H-1B visas for 180 days to complete a comprehensive investigation and audit of pervasive allegations of abuse of the program.

    * Halt any increases in legal immigration so long as American unemployment remains unacceptably high.

    * Enforce the public-charge doctrine. Current law requires legal immigrants to certify that they will be economically self-sufficient. A Cruz Administration will ensure they do not receive government assistance, which defies the law and harms American taxpayers.

    * End birthright citizenship. …. I will take steps to pass legislation or a constitutional amendment to end it.

Maybe running as an independent would help him. The GOP brand is toxic to a lot of people; maybe they'd be more willing to vote for a non-Republican Trump?

Imagine the GOP nominate Jeb. He'd get his 4% of Republican voters, big whoop. If Trump can pull in 4% of Dems, *and* get a big white turnout, he wins.

  4. By contrast, try to obtain a visitors visa for a friend from non-visa waiver countries. One jumps through hoops plus pays costs of all kinds and, frequently, applications are denied for no apparent reason other than insufficient ties to their home country. I had this happen to a friend with 3 teen-agers and a career at the country’s national university and that was the reason given. Insufficient ties indeed. And my friend is a brown-skinned person. And my friend has family in the US – Mother, sister, nieces and an aunt.

What do I suspect? I have no idea what to think.

    It is a crap-shoot.

He's very much a political survivor and he's quite good at playing the game. I would characterize him as the new Somoza.

Ortega's easier to figure out if you assume he just wants to be running the show and doesn't care too much about what he has to do to achieve that. He teamed up with the Soviets back in the day because that was that path for him to gain power. He got pushed out by Chamorro and the U.S., but hung around. He cut deals with people like Aleman to strengthen his hand, and he took advantage of PLC infighting and changed the rules for elections to lower the percentage of the vote needed to win which let him become president again in 2006 (or somewhere around then).

He and his family are now quite wealthy and the incentives he has now are different from what he had when he was starting out. I figure the country the government's going to be reasonably stable, if somewhat corrupt, for a while. And say what you will about him, the roads are now much better, at least around Managua, than they were 10 years ago.

Since when do “Central American nations” determine and run U.S. immigration policy? Something here smells really, really rotten – and I suspect the odor emanates not from those “Central American nations” or their “agreement,” but from the sewer of corruption and treason in our own capital city.

But maybe those Cuban “migrants” are sorely needed shepherds, or our Dear Rulers are yet again trying to pull the wool over our lying eyes.

Cruz was NEVER an "anti-immigration" candidate until Trump took off.

President Gerald Ford should have tried Weihenstephaner. The government can make good beer — if it’s run by germans.

NYT, 12/29/15 – Suspect in Grisly Killing Met Victim in a Therapy Group, Officials Say

    http://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/30/nyregion/suspect-in-grisly-killing-met-victim-in-a-therapy-group-officials-say.html?ref=todayspaper&_r=0

The man accused of killing and disemboweling a woman in October and dumping her body in a park met the victim while the two were getting mental health care at a hospital in Queens, the authorities said on Tuesday.

The man, Christopher Sobers, 25, was arraigned on Tuesday, one day after his arrest in connection with the death of Qing Qing Kiemde, 28, a bakery worker whose mangled corpse was found by a homeless man on a dirt path in Kissena Corridor Park on Oct. 11. An eight-count indictment charged him with crimes including second-degree murder and first-degree robbery.

Investigators have not established a motive for the killing but say they were led to Mr. Sobers after his name came up in conversations with participants in what the authorities described as “a mental health group” at Elmhurst Hospital Center that both Ms. Kiemde and Mr. Sobers were in. Officials said the two had met there, and their relationship grew intimate, though at the time of the killing they were just friends [with friends like that…] …

Ms. Sobers said her grandson, who was born in Barbados and immigrated to the United States with his mother and sister when he was 9, was kind and loving…In recent years, Mr. Sobers was at times homeless and ran afoul of the law, relatives said. According to the police, he was arrested at various times on suspicion of burglary, grand larceny involving credit cards and criminal possession of a weapon — brass knuckles. His criminal history also includes several sealed arrests, officials said.

Mr. Sobers had recently enrolled at LaGuardia Community College, where he was pursuing a liberal arts degree…

Cruz saw what was working for Trump and reversed his original stands on these issues almost 180 degrees. I’m sure Cruz would pull another 180 degree switcheroo in the unbelievably unlikely event he were to become president.

Another person who has changed his mind 180 degrees about the immigration issue is Donald Trump.

In 2012, Trump was denouncing Mitt Romney as "mean spirited" on the immigration issue.

Keep Trump's own reversal in mind when you compare Trump and Cruz on the immigration issue.

Nonsense. Trump has long talked about renegotiating trade deals and bringing jobs back to this country. He just has more political acumen than you

That is irrelevant to the question of whether Trump has changed his mind about illegal immigration.

Trump changed his mind in the summer of 2015, after reading Ann Coulter's book Adios, America.

"What is the deal with Daniel Ortega? I just can’t figure him out."

He's starting to remind me a little of Jerry Brown: an eccentric political survivor.

    Replies: @blah blah blah

He’s very much a political survivor and he’s quite good at playing the game. I would characterize him as the new Somoza.

Ortega’s easier to figure out if you assume he just wants to be running the show and doesn’t care too much about what he has to do to achieve that.

I figure the country the government’s going to be reasonably stable, if somewhat corrupt, for a while. And say what you will about him, the roads are now much better, at least around Managua, than they were 10 years ago.
