From my new column in Taki’s Magazine:

Our New Religion of Race
Steve Sailer

July 15, 2020

… America in the era of George Floyd (may he rest in power) appears to be inventing a new religion of race.

In accordance with our culture’s declining intellectual prowess, our new creed is a very simple faith, with one black-and-white dogma:

Blacks are best and whites are worst.

In 2020, all you need to know is who are the good guys and who are the bad guys.

Everything else follows inevitably. For example, whites are sinners and must be disciplined, while blacks are saints and must be indulged.

As you may have noticed, the spelling of the word “black” has recently been subjected by the mainstream media to “reverential capitalization,” much as in Victorian translations of the Bible, pronouns that refer to God were capitalized.

The point of newspapers now capitalizing “Black” but, pointedly, not “white” is to make clear that blacks are of a higher caste than whites.

Read the whole thing there.

  1. Sure, but it can’t last long. America is too entangled with the world, no North Korea here. Very soon, most of the world starts laughing at this silliness & the whole Wokianity/Wokology/Wokeism goes to septic tank.

  2. IHTG says:

IMO “religion” is not the best term to use here, as it has too many specific ritualistic and communal connotations. I think of wokeism primarily as a new moral creed, which among its most extreme practitioners tends to segue into cultism.

  3. Does this imply that even if we somehow develop a vaccine, immunity will only be for a few months?

Will we need to keep getting vaccinated, over and over again?

  4. @black sea

The label must have been tl;dr for the triggered folk.

  5. Political Correctness isn’t like a religion, it is a religion.

Wokeism or Black Worship is the the latest version. White people (and others who care) will have to demand PC Dogma be legally termed a religion so it can’t be taught in schools or imposed on people through law.

It doesn’t matter how silly all this is. If unopposed, it will be accepted as Gospel by future generations. Things will keep getting worse. Remember, everyone thought John Brown was a nutcase in 1859, but a few years later they were singing songs honoring him while engaged in war.

That was preceded by abolitionist preachers who laid the groundwork on behalf of their Black brothers, all the while ignoring the plight of White Irish in their midst. These cold-blooded virtue signalers are not to be dismissed as harmless, even if silly.

  6. Well said, particularly the Sacred Cow bit.

Yep, we have the makings of a world-class religion here, with the catechism including it’s own pithy Lords’ Prayer (“Black Lives Matter”), sacraments in the form of sacred rites (power fisting and taking a knee), and holy saints (Till PBUH, Parks PBUH, Floyd PBUH). Those who transgress against any of those, e.g. saying “All lives matter” are heretics fit to be put to death like the mongrel dogs they are.

  7. The sacred cows at least had a time when they were useful, unlike the black underclass.

  8. unit472 says:

Trouble is brewing in Wakanda though. The mayor of Philadelphia has prohibited any mass public events until March 2021. I suspect the Mayors of LA, Tampa, Minneapoiis, Seattle etc won’t be any less vigilant so there goes the 2020 NFL season. Gross revenue $15 billion paid largely to twentysomething negro millionaires. Ditto to the NBA and its $8.7 billion in revenues.

OK, those are just the two most prominent sources of negro wealth. What about Hollywood. Well it seems production companies cannot get ‘Covid’ insurance and without it they can’t get production finance so there will be no Black Panther sequels or a negro James Bond. Music. Well musicians make their money these days from live shows and those are kaput too,

Alright, so the richest blacks will have a lean ye3r or maybe two but they can afford it. What about the black middle class? Not looking good here either. State and local governments are getting squeezed between their bond and pension obligations and declining tax revenues. Only place to make cuts is in payrolls. Guess they will have to empty out those employee parking lots at government buildings and a disproportionate number will be non essential negroes.

Care to guess how maoy negroes work at Amtrak. Public Transit agencies? A lot but they have no passaengers so many will have to find a new sinecure. Problem is the demand for sportscasters, sports journalists and other jobs where no credentials or licenses are needed has dried up too. Police officer was always a reliable position for a young black man with a clean record… oh wait… BLM!

Wrong. Wokeism is fanatical through and through, not just certain elements of the Woke. “Woke” people are already the most extreme elements of the Democratic Party, though a large and growing percentage of that party. And huge portion of the Democratic Party itself, not just the Woke members, already holds to some fairly extremist, unscientific beliefs.

The Woke would not have as much power as they do if there weren’t already a significant percentage of people who at adhered to many of their beliefs. The best comparison I can think of is Islam. We’re constantly told that most Muslims are rational and tolerant people. But Islamic nations wouldn’t be so backwards if there were only a few Muslims who embraced fanaticism.

  16. Steve, I am sure you are right to apply apply the religion label. But it gives hope. Most religious eruptions don’t end by a Constantine and his Mum launching them into the mainstream with all sorts of secular rules and incentives to perpetuate them. Most are like those would be prophets in Aramaic speaking Palestine of whom we only think of one, or like the myriad sects which for hundreds of years tried to appropriate the aura of that one and were a lot of vandals and savages for the most part (they destroyed Palmyra before ISIL) as well as WOKE Roman matrons who wrote opeds and editorials. The negative characteristics of half the 13-14 per cent of Americans who are black is going to pass off enough Hispanics and other minorities that even Democrats and LA Times staff members will take note and adjust.

  17. Graham says:

    Here’s an idea for a t-shirt slogan:

    BLACK LIVES MATTER

It might look innocuous to woke folk at first, but that depends on whether the invisible conjunction between the two sentences is ‘and’ or ‘but’.

Disclosure: I’m not brave enough to wear a t-shirt with any slogan on.

Fortunately the Woke lack a compelling perfectly rational comprehensive doctrine along the lines of “it is all handed down by Allah via Mohammed in a single comprehensive text: just obey”. (Yep, rational, once you accept the key premise).

  19. Racism as religion is impossible to understand without grasping its premise: society is a morally superior-inferior arrangement. The premise is derived from Karl Marx’s doctrine of the superior virtue of the oppressed.

The vehicle of oppression of black Americans, what makes them the good guys, endows them with superior virtue (moral superiority) is above all else, their victimhood, the burden of racism laid upon them by white Americans. Without “racism” black Americans could no longer be, collectively, victims. They would have to relinquish the collective prize of “superior virtue.” White Americans, collectively, would no longer be “on the hook” and could finally cast away their guilt, free of the “moral inferiority” shackles that bound them in the long unfolding, never-to-end morality play of American history — “Free at last; free at last. God Almighty, free at last!”

For those who occupy the ranks of the superior, it is a sweet deal. Why relinquish the driver’s seat? I certainly wouldn’t, and I would strenuously resist every effort to dislodge me. The NYT 1619 Project was launched to keep the “superiors” permanently behind the wheel.

  20. Dumbo says:
    @black sea

LOL. Swedish, progressive, anti-racist, and cancelled all the same. Good riddance. Sooner or later, those annoying virtue-signalers get what they deserve.

  21. Diamed says:

This analysis is wrong. People aren’t up in arms about unequal black outcomes due to religious zeal and most certainly aren’t doing it out of cynical hopes for a well-paid job. They are up in arms because they genuinely believe what they’ve been told in school, in church, and in the media, that blacks are as well behaved and intelligent as whites, and that only racism is holding them down.

If anyone actually believes that, and has a soul, they’d be furious. Their righteous indignation would be wholly justified. Look how much black suffering there is every day, from bad schooling outcomes to poverty to crime victimization. They lead miserable lives, men and women, from start to finish in America. It’s debatable, with the breakdown of the family and the rise of mass incarceration, if blacks are better off now than they were under Jim Crow or even slavery.

How do you convince people of the facts that blacks are innately worse behaved and stupider than whites, and that all their suffering is due to their own bad decisions? How, when there are 100 authority figures saying the opposite of you every day? But if you cannot win this argument, normal, kind, decent people will go progressively crazier every day at the obvious injustice they see in front of them and will destroy more and more and more in the hopes of rectifying this obvious injustice.

Dismissing these people’s concerns as job hunters or cow worshipers won’t convince them, it will just make it clear to them that you don’t take their genuine concerns seriously and thus can’t be a decent human being like they are.

You’re the only writer with the platform, the audience, and the good sense to win this argument. You must convince the world that blacks are their own undoing or America (and perhaps the entire world) is doomed. Please don’t sneer at and smear the people you need to convince. That will never change anyone’s minds.

  22. Ian Smith says:
    @Diamed

There is a lot of cognitive dissonance with this crowd. Woke White women will bump and grind to the crudest gangsta rap, and then wonder why people have bad stereotypes of blacks. Woke Whites will move to a neighborhood with ‘good schools,’ and then wring their hands about the lack of diversity. They mate exclusively with other Woke Whites, and then robotically say ‘how beautiful’ when they see mixed children.

    It’s all so tiresome.

The NYT 1619 Project was launched to keep the “superiors” permanently behind the wheel.

Quite right, but here’s some context:
While “The premise is derived from Karl Marx’s doctrine of the superior virtue of the oppressed. ” as you say, the legal foundation (in the US) of the “superior virtue of the oppressed” is the 1964 Civil Rights Act (CRA, See: C. Caldwell, _The Entitlement Society_, 2020/01). The 1964 CRA was intended by the American White public to be temporary, until “the Blacks caught up”, but has been interpreted by the Federal Judiciary to be permanent (or until the POC voluntarily renounce their superior virtue in law). It should not have needed any subsequent reinforcement.

To my mind, the NYT 1619 Project, which is very close to the public relations of the early 1960s, is a sign that the consensus supporting the 1964 CRA has weakened. The current riots etc. are simply a repetition of the 1960s, and are to be followed (says Biden) by legislation that reaffirms the CRA. I would say “strengthens the CRA”, but the CRA is about as strong as a man-made law can be. It’s a little less strong than the Law of Gravity, but not much, and the Federal Judicial Branch follows it rather than the US Constitution.

So: The NYT 1619 Project and the current riots are a sign of weakness and lack of originality. Push back and see what happens.

  29. The mistake the U.S. is making is believing that “right” makes might; ie, that having the correct moral code, world view, political philosophy, etc is a source of power.

The reality is that powerful people/nations impose their world view on others, regardless of its cruelty, its illogic, or its immorality.

The only reason anyone, anywhere, listens to the U.S. is due to the size of its economy and the attendant benefits (a large military) that are associated with that. Once the U.S. economy becomes smaller (in relative or absolute terms) most of the “woke” ideology will become nothing more than an absurd, discredited local/provincial phenomenon.

The world will find other role models, other cultures to emulate, other nations to align with. Americans will be forced to awaken from their delusion, and discover that their politics and morals mean nothing in and of themselves, but that the consequences of them are very real and very dire, as the fall from global hegemon will impose great stresses on a politically fractured society, where people are praised for being incompatible with each other.

My guess is that this new “religion” of race will be short lived, because the people imposing/promoting it are declining in power. That’s the downside of globalism…you outsource everything to bigger economies, including cultural development. And the fact that countries like china, while promoting this garbage in failed countries like U.S., do not do so in their own successful nation, will prove impossible, in the long run, for “americans” to ignore.

As for when this issue will come to a head, my guess is that when most/all people realize that diversity is a cost, not a benefit. This will be when whites and asians discover that blacks and latinos add no economic value in a 21st century economy, and when latinos and blacks realize that whites and asians won’t’/can’t/refuse to “subsidize” their existence. This will probably occur around the time the U.S. dollar loses it global reserve status, and “americans” will have to start playing by the same financial rules as most other nations.

This will probably occur within the next 10 years. Better be ready…

Are Americans well trained enough to stick with the new religion even after crime levels soar back to where they were in 1980?

I think we like to imagine that the shibboleths of the self-regarded urban elite class are a mere function of ignorance and naivete – we question “but have you seen the wildly disproportionate FBI Crime statistics broken out by race” or “have you seen the IQ distributions between blacks and whites?”

Perhaps some, particularly on the younger side, are that naive. But I think for quite a lot of them they’re aware of racial differences in things like IQ and propensity to commit crimes, but their reaction is to redouble the efforts at constructing a contrary false narrative to deal with the dissonance. After all, in any incisive criticism of power hierarchies these are the people with vastly disproportionate wealth and power. So their scheme is to carve out safe spaces for themselves and theirs while assuaging the guilt and dissonance by punching down at non elite whites. Undue care for the fate of blacks also a sort of fitness boast or form of peacocking – a “luxury belief” as someone has termed them – a way of saying “I’m so high status and talented that widespread black criminality and positive racism in favor of blacks doesn’t threaten my status, unlike you bad whites.”

One of the odd phenomena of white flight if you personally experienced it was how declasse any sort of overt race consciousness would be viewed among people who had just escaped the effects of black social pathologies in their former neighborhoods. The actual physical structure of suburban development was constructed to exclude the kind of criminality that had forced them out of the cities, they elected “tough on crime” celebrity District Attorneys, and other obstacles like high property taxes for “good schools” were constructed, but talking about the very thing that had just motivated them to move really wasn’t the sort of thing that was done.

All of which is to say that the white people who have control of the reigns of the culture and of corporate America will not react to a second tsunami of urban, disproportionately black crime with efforts to arrest and punish that crime. Rather, they will find ways to absent themselves from the zones of danger and dysfunction, and disguise the guilt or dissonance with more and more aggressive anti-white punitive measures. What happens when the price of entry and remaining in an American Alphaville or Orania is explicit anti-white activism expressed on demand by the people who have the power to destroy your career and wealth and banish you to live beyond the gates?

  37. As L. Ron Hubbard likely said to his fellow science-fiction authors in the 1940s, “Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wanted to make a million dollars, the best way to do it would be to start his own religion.”

But the new belief isn’t, like Scientology, a mere cult. Instead, it’s rapidly becoming the official ruling-class religion of the United States.

Almost, but not quite. The ruling class is not “starting their own religion”, they are starting your new religion. They obviously do not believe it for themselves, and do not intend to apply it to themselves, as your most recent post makes clear.

Ruling class retainer Nita Lelyveld using sacred cow Alex Marshall-Brown as a cat’s paw to instigate a racial confrontation and doctrinal collapse at middle class St. Paul’s First Lutheran church is the epitome of this.

    BK,
    I respectfully disagree.

Here’s a case in Detroit where a black security guard shot and killed a black copper thief and then conspired with the other black thief and a black female witness to (falsely) pin the shooting on the Middle Eastern business owner.

The owner spent over seven years in prison before having his conviction overturned, thanks to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Conviction Integrity Unit.

Others here have recently noted that both Prosecutor Kym Worthy and DPD Chief James Craig are stand-up public officials.
They are, and this case is evidence of that.

But public officials like these two are opposed by the big-time Soros money, as Steve has pointed out, and they will become increasingly rare soon.

Our future will have more, not fewer wrongful convictions of non-blacks thanks to the beatification that Steve wrote about this week.

    Really?

Sailer’s great weakness in this article is that he seems to ascribe the origin of this Black Man God on Earth religion to this age. Its origins are much older, back to the early 19th century. Then the English speaking world saw a rise in awareness that, as Jonathan Swift had satirized in A Modest Proposal, English rule of Ireland was so amorally greedy and barbaric that in law Irish Catholics had barely more stance than cattle: hence Swift’s modest proposer saying the problem would be solved if children of Catholics were eaten. Swift also stressed that English rule in Ireland was so harmful to most Irish Protestants that masses had fled the land for North America.

And that was not all. The same people beginning to realize some of the horrors in Ireland also began to realize the horrors in Scotland. Even more troubling, or irritating, to the Brit WASP Elite was that finally some people began talking about how the English poor who did not manage to get sent to Penal Servitude in Australian or to emigrate to North America kept getting poorer, while the English Elites kept getting richer, and richer.

The answer for the Brit WASP Elites was to embrace Abolitionism. They were not against all slavery. They showed virtually no concern that Turks still captured white Christians to be slaves. Brit WASP Abolitionism was only about ending slavery of blacks owned by whites. And so the Brit WASP Elites who kept getting richer each half decade at the expense of the poorest half or more of the natives of the British Isles wrapped themselves in the mantle of Righteousness because they adored the Negro.

And the Brit WASP Elites had a new justification for hating the white trash of the British Isles: the poor whites dod not adore the Negro and offer to sacrifice themselves to uplift the sacred primitive Negro.

The same basic pattern transpired in the US.

It’s religious zeal which, like so much religious zealotry, arises out of a genuine desire to “do right,” but has become warped by fanaticism. It’s one thing to point out that none of us is perfect and that we’re all sinners or that only one without sin should cast the first stone, etc. It’s another thing to want to flagellate your sinful flesh until you’re bleeding or even kill yourself or your loved ones so as to cleanse the world of your wickedness. We’re at this crazy point right now.

Human psychology being what it is, we are pre-wired for hypocrisy. Hence the religious admonitions against casting stones or removing beams of wood from your eye. The woke progressive/liberal knows, on a subconscious level, that they’re hypocrites – “I want to send my kids to a ‘good school,’ race has nothing to do with it” – and it causes tremendous psychological turmoil which causes them to lash out in a kind of defense mechanism.

Two things came out of the civil rights era: one, the black family was destroyed, and thus black lives got worse and their behavior (already bad) lost it’s remaining tenuous relationship to civilization. Two, the resultant white flight caused a few generations of whites to be completely removed from any direct experiences with black behavior, instead being fed increasingly bizarre fairy tales by teachers about them.

I’m Gen X. We did the whole MLK thing, and sort of believed it – but we also grew up with the stories of parents who had been chased out of their old neighborhoods in the 50s and 60s. Millenials, though, were so far separated from both blacks and history, that they have no reason to not believe what their teachers tell them. So of course they buy into the whole Narrative. Every experience they think they have tells them that its true…

most groups got capitalized, “white” is never capitalized, and that’s been the rule since the 90s in newspapers. maybe earlier, but i didn’t want to bother looking up old newspapers and magazines to check. Steve is really into that, doing his google word graphs and stuff, so maybe he should go get newspapers from the 80s and 70s and begin checking when the word games and group capitalization thing began. he’ll see literally ten thousand articles where white is “white” and africans are “African-Americans”. similar for other group designators.

also note that the official Strunk rule from Elements of Style about acronym punctuation has been jettisoned for homos, who now get an unpunctuated string, LGBT, where other letters can be appended as necessary. the masters of language simply deprecate any rules as necessary, like a creative accountant flaunting GAAP.

The officer pointed to an incident in April when a group of teens who had been arrested in a stolen car were taken to the Village Network juvenile reception center. While they were being processed, one of the teens stole an employee’s keys, ran into the parking lot and stole the employee’s personal vehicle. He drove off with two other escaping juveniles.”
“They just don’t care,” the officer said. “What else can we do?”

“When we arrested them, they were laughing that they had killed their friend,” the officer said. “They were basically laughing because they think they’ll be out when they’re 18. They don’t care about anything.”

Wokeism (with Blacks held sacred) is necessarily religious because it doesn’t have a logical, empirical, statistical rebuttal to HBD—and is in fact a religious reaction to the easily observed everyday reality of evolutionary inequality.

easily observed everyday reality of evolutionary inequality.

Just because inequalities are subject to easy observation doesn’t mean that the explanation for them is evolutionary. They could just as well be environmental. YOU draw the conclusion that these differences are largely evolutionary and the woke see the same inequalities and they draw the conclusion that they are environmental.

I will give you an example – if you had met my father and his brothers and shtetl friends (the few that survived) you might have drawn the conclusion that E. European Jews were extremely short statured – that the centuries in the shtetl had somehow shrunk their race because they were all maybe 5′ 5″ tops. But in one generation of a high protein, high calcium diet of American Vitamin D milk and hamburgers (not at the same meal) instead of a diet consisting mainly of bread and potatoes, their kids all gained a good five inches and their grandkids even more. So the “easily observed” differences turned out not to have an evolutionary basis at all but one that was mostly environmental.

Now you might say that American blacks have had 20 generations in N. America to catch up intellectually with white people (and they have in fact closed the gap part way) but a true believer will say that they lived under conditions of oppression until quite recently and in fact even right now, so until these conditions of oppression are removed they aren’t going to catch up any more than I would have caught up with other Americans in height if I had been forced to remain on my father’s inadequate childhood diet.

But anyway the idea that all you need to do is see differences and the scales will be lifted from your eyes is false. The woke can see these differences just as well as you but they attribute them to a completely different cause.

The Irish were here for the same reason the blacks were: to undercut the bargaining power of native white workers. We never had need for either. Corrupt employers invited both.

However, as bad as their employers were, the Irish lined up to work for them. If they quit, they were easily replaced. No need for bloodhounds to bring them back.

Another big difference: the Irish got work done. At least some of the time.

Oh, and during the war, Irishmen were not exempted from the draft, and there was no Twenty Irish Rule.

Tbh I just think “X is like a new religion” is in danger of becoming an overused cliche. You don’t want your rhetoric to become stale.

It’s not close to being stale, because the concept hasn’t yet entered the mainstream. Imagine Tucker Carlson describing the debate (anti-racism vs. racism) as between religious mysticism and Darwinian/Galtonian empiricism? Heads would explode. Everyone from kumbaya Christians to leftist “Scientific racism!” decriers would go nuts, and Carlson would be immediately deplatformed.

Calling BLM, DIE, etc. a “religion” would enrage the ‘rational’ left, especially, because to the left, “religion” (i.e. Christianity) is a term of derision, and is usually contrasted with the assumed progressiveness of “Science!” The left prides itself on being smarter that those on the “ignorant” right. That’s why the HBD project is so dangerous to the woke left: They will have to abandon any pretenses to science and smarts, and increasingly will be weighed down / driven to further hysteria with the dissonance of their own conflicting positions: We’re smart! vs. Racism is wrong!

One cannot claim to be smart and pro-science, and also claim that:

    1) Race doesn’t biologically exist, or
    2) If there are biological races, they are biologically equal in all important ways.

a true believer will say that they lived under conditions of oppression until quite recently and in fact even right now, so until these conditions of oppression are removed they aren’t going to catch up

Right: Agree and amplify. Inform your religious debate opponent(s) that you agree Blacks were oppressed, are oppressed, and will continue to be oppressed, as a people, forever. Why? They are oppressed by their own genetics: Wherever they go, there they are. This is key: Cite facts. Your debate opponent will short circuit (as Steve says: point and sputter) and revert back to religion: They will call you immoral, evil, a Nazi. You’ve won the debate.

Remember, the basic goal in such a conflict isn’t necessarily to convince your opponent you are right, or to elicit a rhetorical concession—the goal is to be able to speak the truth, and enforce one’s will, without impediment from the deluded and/or hostile. Of course, if they eventually do see the light and agree with you, that is quite rewarding and will make life easier.

But anyway the idea that all you need to do is see differences and the scales will be lifted from your eyes is false. The woke can see these differences just as well as you but they attribute them to a completely different cause.

My claim isn’t that the left rationally believes in those causes (of inequality), it’s that the dissonance between their mystical dogma and what they (and we) see every day causes them to project “Heresy!” onto dissidents.

Steve calling it a “Religion of Race” is great because many of those same leftists are officially hostile to religion—they deem religion, especially traditional Christianity, as backwards and ignorant. The more “Our New Religion of Race” is Sapir-Whorf ’d into broader discourse, the better a conceptual weapon it will be.

Your debate strategy works if rational people talk about ignornts. – We can see, why we should win, but our opponents will not.

So – it’s rational to call out the woke left about their quasi-religious behavior, but these arguments won’t reach them, because they could always claim that they are atheists anyway. – End of debate!

    – The problem still stands: How to lecture an ignorant about his shortcomings. –

Dieter, it’s not about convincing the intransigent, it’s about knowing their psyche, neuroses, and contradictions, trapping them in a logic box, and riling/trouncing/dismissing them as they get mad and defensive; it’s an especially useful tactic if there’s an on-the-fence ‘audience’ to be swayed.

    Read my comment again:

“Remember, the basic goal in such a conflict isn’t necessarily to convince your opponent you are right, or to elicit a rhetorical concession—the goal is to be able to speak the truth, and enforce one’s will, without impediment from the deluded and/or hostile.”

Jenner, you say let’s try and “enforce one’s will” at the opponent (= shout at them rather than convince them, DK).

Ok – I’ll admit, that here I’m leaning towards a more – hm? – slightly more  – hm? -civilized (sigh) solution.

Since we agree, that it’s useful to know the psyches / the neuroses of the – I’ll stay with my term: Ignorant, – since we both see this problem, you might understand why I think Dr. Freud is to be consulted here.

And what is his advice in such cases: Not to yell, but to tone down once’ voice. Because, you know, the very nature of reason, as Dr. Freud saw it, is toned down: The voice of the intellect is soft. And he goes on: “But it doesn’ rest until it gets heard. In the end, after uncountably often repeated abjections, it manages to reach its goal. This is one of the few points that a slight optimism with regard to the future of mankind rests upon, and this point is not to be underestimated”***. So – it’s right to insist, it might more often than not even be necessary, as Dr. Freud sees it, but its wrong to use force in a debate, because enforcement in a debate will (necessarily) cause resistance.
Here’s the Freud memorial in Vienna’s Sigmund-Freud-Park – which has just this sentence about the very soft-spokenness of the intellect engraved in it –

    https://austria-forum.org/af/Wissenssammlungen/Denkmale/Freud%2C%20Sigmund%2C%20Denkmal

***in The Future of an Illusion, 1926 in English 1936. Freud died in 1939. Freud argued quite paradoxically, that reason (0the intellect) might be able to overcome the illusionary restraints of religion, but that this too might turn out to be an illusion – and then happily concedes, that this thought of his might turn out to be the beginning of a “regressus ad infinitum”… an eternal regression…that here he might stand at a crossroads, where the intellect might 8might) face an opponent, which he will have to bow down to.
(whenever I contemplate these passages, I’m sorry, that Freud is no longer alive. If he were, I would ask him about Geothe at this rather dark junction of his thoughts-system.
Goethe did not have to enter such a rather gloomy territory, because he – basically, because he had written Faust (I & II).
I could dive deeper into this subject but for this moment want to take this shortcut and end with this thought: Goethe managed to balance (not only in Faust) the rather tragic and the rather comical aspects of our existence – not least by applying irony and humor into the existentially hurtful cycles of death and birth and death and birth and death and birth (Joni Mitchell).

Ahja – Goethe’s light touch will save Joni Mitchell’s song too. If taken just a little bit too heavy, Joni Mitchell can remind her listeners of a self-pitying unhappy person – cynical and drunk and boring in some sad cafe… (as she herself put it perfectly well in – – – – Blue*****).

*****You could construct the same dysfunctional thought machine out of Joni Mitchell’s conundrums as of those of the late Sigmund Freud. – Both show a (very slight, but nonetheless noticeable) tendency towards a regressus ad infinitum. – Which might be the worldy equivalent of the old theodicy problem, – – – – as long as you try to rationally solve it….********

********I make this one here very short too: Don’t try to rationally solve rationally unsolvable problems (cf. Wittgenstein’s advice to understand that it’s rational to understand (=accept) that there are things that can’t be spoken about (can’t be dealt with rationally).

Keep in mind that the term “anti-vaxxer” is a deceitful point-and-sputter phrase.

Will we need to keep getting vaccinated, over and over again?

What if, once we’ve had the disease or been vaccinated, we keep getting intentionally reinfected every few weeks?

    Wouldn’t that preserve immunity?

Jenner, you say let’s try and “enforce one’s will” at the opponent (= shout at them rather than convince them, DK).

You have it backwards: In the 1-on-1 argument, they will start shouting, or tactically retreat. When I wrote “Remember, the basic goal in such a conflict isn’t necessarily to convince your opponent you are right” I meant by “conflict” the issue in general, as it affects society…

Your main goal is not to enforce your will in the ‘spot’ argument (unless, say, it’s a personal legal/employment battle, etc.)—it’s to enforce your will in concert against their forces in the broader conflict. This is done through ongoing debate, defensive lawfare, politics, and voting when the civic system still works, or violence when the system fails.

I lucked out literally in high school. I wanted to take French because the stuffy white girls i wanted to sleep with at my school took French….so did the obnoxious white upper m.c. white dudes i went to church with. And at my suburban southern high school you had 2 options…..French or Spanish. French was full the spring semester of my sophomore yr….so the guidance counselor said i was going to Spanish class as you had to have 2 foreign language credits to graduate.

Boy am i glad i took Espanol.

From helping me pick up buxom curvy latina girls in Texas(white dudes listen….trust me go Latin….) to helping me get along well with my Rican bosses at work who talk to me in Spanish sometimes it helps….

In 50 yrs when 2 billion African men try kicking in the door to come here & whats left of our white female population will welcome them with open arms latino and AA men will be your only allies in stopping that flood.

Like my Rican coworker who backed Trump in 2016…..they want that border shut….if half of Africa comes here that means less sh-t for them…
