From the Los Angeles Times, an encouraging story about rule of law and freedom of speech coming even to Berkeley:

UC Berkeley keeps a lid on 2,000 protesters, allowing conservative commentator Ann Coulter to speak

By TERESA WATANABE STAFF WRITER
NOV. 22, 2019 5 AM

The protesters gathered 2,000 strong, demanding the crowd shut down a talk about immigration by right-wing commentator Ann Coulter at UC Berkeley this week. …

But Coulter came. She spoke. She left.

And it all occurred without major problems — the kinds of violent protests that shut down a 2017 Berkeley appearance by conservative provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos, drew national headlines and prompted President Trump to threaten to cut off the university’s federal funding.

“What was significant … was what didn’t happen,” UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof said Thursday. “We did not see the sort of violence, mayhem and property destruction that attended to the event with Milo Yiannopoulos.”

Police arrested five people, including three students for resisting law enforcement. One person was injured during a scuffle with a protester.

So a citizen was injured by anti-free speech goons, but by Berkeley standards, just one casualty due to leftist violence is pretty good.

There was no property damage during the talk, attended by about 400 people.

Matt Ronnau, president of the UC Berkeley College Republicans, which invited Coulter, said as many as 100 students may have been blocked from attending by protesters who linked arms as a human barricade near the entrances. He also said a few students reported that knives were pulled, but Mogulof said police have received no such reports.

Ronnau, however, said the event went well overall and praised UC police officers for their work.

“The rank-and-file … always does a fantastic job,” he said. “If not for them, we could have had a very bad situation similar to Milo in 2017.”

During our Hate Hoax Era, rank and file cops have been America’s main bulwark of sanity.

… But this year the campus was ready after Chancellor Carol T. Christ, who took the helm in 2017, began working with UC police to improve crowd control methods and launched “Free Speech Year” with panels to demonstrate how to exchange opposing views in a respectful manner and learn about the 1st Amendment. ….

Since the Yiannopoulos protest, he said, Berkeley has spent more than $4 million on security measures and made changes in how law enforcement gathers information, deals with outsiders coming to campus, deters plans to stir up violence and secures the speaking venue.

Berkeley has cracked down on the wearing of masks, for instance, in line with a longstanding state law barring them to avoid detection by police.

Masked vigilantes have long been against the law in California, but now Berkeley has finally started enforcing this law against leftist thugs.

The university toughened its policy after many Antifa members and other protesters wore masks while storming the campus during the Yiannopoulos event. On Wednesday, those wearing masks were asked to remove them, Mogulof said.

Another change that has helped keep the peace, Mogulof said, is that student organizations are now closely adhering to a policy that spells out the process for holding major campus events, including requirements for advance notifications, deadlines and planning meetings. The policy was modified last year to clarify the responsibilities of both the campus and student organizations as part of a legal settlement with conservative students who complained the campus arbitrarily threw up barriers to their proposed events, impeding them from hosting speakers.

Since the Yiannopoulos event, the College Republicans have held campus forums with a host of conservatives, including Ben Shapiro, Dennis Prager, Rick Santorum, Charlie Kirk and Sean Spicer.

  1. Steve,

Rank and file cops performed ignominiously in Charlottesville under the tight check of their PC superior overlords. So it oftentimes depends on whether or not the rank and file are left to their own devices.

  2. They did reportedly keep 100 or so paid ticket holders from getting in. But it’s a start.

  3. Masked vigilantes have long been against the law in California, but now Berkeley has finally started enforcing this law against leftist thugs.

The question is why? They presumptuously assumed the whip hand was all they needed. Why did they draw back?

Maybe partly because a guy drove a car into a crowd of such leftists at Charlottesville, causing the authorities to think twice before unleashing the hounds.

Not that one should advocate such tactics, but fighting back is what we need.

  8. And there’s still the victim-blaming threat, “how dare Ann Coulter drive me to windowbreaking.” Some progress has been made rolling this back but the thing that really enabled it in Berkeley and Charlottesville and elsewhere was extreme leftists in office. It will be interesting to see what happens as the newly Jacobin NoVA seeks to massacre its Vendee.

QFT. Most of the Asians at Berkeley have better things to do than intimidate people who dare to hear Miss Coulter speak. But the public financing of people like They is (or ought to be) a national scandal.

We now propose debt jubilees for people who had 'free money' rained down on them on the honor system, supposing that they'd use it for their education. With no oversight to speak of. What could possibly go wrong?

We absolutely know that this is roughly the same motley mob of people, the same network anyway, that they carpool and charter buses, that they show up in one current events hot spot, make trouble, and then pile back into their cars and buses, that they openly plan on sites like ItsGoingDown, that they receive foreign money and legal assistance. All of this is well within the focus and duties of a national police agency. A locality that wasn't burdened by leftist officeholders (Charlotte?) arrested them all, then reported at the press conference that these were not outraged local people, in fact none of them were from as nearby as two states over.
And this by the way is what a foreign power would be doing if they did want to overthrow the government, so we should probably build and retain the ability to deal with it.
But we lacked the ability to deal with it, and the same people who couldn't handle this heroin addict convention said they were protecting you from Russia, and from an army of computer-literate heavily armed virgin Nazis.

A Mumia support parade went through the West Bank by the University of Minnesota. That area was once hippie and lefty (Bob Dylan and his friends jammed on the sidewalk), but has been East African for the last two or three decades.

  19. About those masks: the left says they need them. Not because they intend to commit violent crimes while wearing them, no, that’s not it at all. It’s because they’re resisters, see, and are speaking truth to power. And those in power would like nothing more than to identify and ruin them. So next time you see a masked Antifa throw a jar of jenkem at a MAGA fascist, you should thank them for upholding a basic First Amendment right. Reddit trolls who mock CNN on the other hand should be crushed.

  34. I went to Princeton, and what I found was it was very difficult to flunk out. If your grades drop below a C, a special advisor automatically contacts you and offers resources for free academic help. If you are getting an F, they have ways of retroactively unenrolling you from the course, making it look as though had never taken it. Additionally, they are very accommodating to students who need to take 5 or 6 years to graduate and offer significant financial and mental health resources for these students.

Athletes, first gen college students and underrepresented minorities are invited to participate in an exclusive semester prior to freshman year where they can take two introductory courses. This is so that later on if these students need to drop a class for a certain reason, they will still have enough courses under their belt to graduate. Michelle Obama writes about this in her book.

Now, I don’t want to be unfair. The system also benefits privileged white kids because professors are very flexible in their grading and offer multiple opportunities to do extra work to make up for a poor grade. A friend of mine attending a County College in LA told me that if she or her classmates missed even one class during the semester, they would be automatically unenrolled from the course with no refund, regardless of your standing.

I’ve never heard of anyone flunking out of Princeton. This is partially because of the equal outcomes agenda, but also as a ploy to beat Harvard and Yale on their statistics. If Princeton has a 96% grad rate and Harvard only has 95%, we look better!

They should be afraid of acting like that in public, for fear of utter public humiliation. If they have no shame, it may need to be beaten into them.

  37. The most disgusting part of this, by far, is the way these college-aged young women exhibit the maturity and decorum of sadistic eleven-year-olds.

There is definitely a kind of female ‘Lord of the Flies’ behavior on display here.

No sense of shame, or self awareness. It’s as if no one has ever told them “No” in their lives.

That's a really impressive Adam's apple on Ms. Coulter!

She is definitely a woman with masculine traits, mostly mental but some physical (as you noted). I think she’s got bigger balls than any man appearing on FOX News.
Nevertheless, she’s like a lanky, beautiful Praying Mantis, and probably as deadly. I suspect she never had children to avoid the necessity of beheading the father.

Thanks for once again illustrating how women typically get a 4-5 point handicap on a 10 point scale. As if we needed more proof...

  43. List of “conservatives” includes bible-thumping Dennis Prager and Rick Santorum, the latter considerably past his political relevancy expiration date. I generally oppose these two for wrapping their political beliefs in Bronze Age dogma, but I wouldn’t act to stop either of them from speaking. Let the audience judge for themselves.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the World War Hair angle here.

They hate the Coulter ticket holder because she’s pretty and has long blonde hair.

Every now and again, Ann lets slip a comment indicating that her years in Ann Arbor weren’t wasted listening to idiot communist professors but instead she noticed Detoilet just down Michigan Ave and made the logical deductions about its proximate cause. Between Ann and Larry Elder, we have anecdotal evidence that one might actually gain an education at UofM..

Politics aside, people who behave like this should be expelled from any college or university they may happen to attend. They should be afraid of acting like that in public, for fear of utter public humiliation. If they have no shame, it may need to be beaten into them.
