In Black-led Compton, a Latino majority fights for political power
The city known for its Black culture has flipped majority Latino, but its leadership remains all Black. …

May 15, 2023 at 5:00 a.m. EDT… The city south of Los Angeles is known as one of the great hubs of Black culture, producing countless Black athletes, rap legends and other celebrities, from Serena and Venus Williams to N.W.A. and Kendrick Lamar.
But Compton is no longer a Black city. Forty years ago, the city’s population was 74 percent Black; now it is nearly 70 percent Latino.
… The city’s leadership still reflects its demographic past, with an all-Black city council and school board. It has never had a Latino mayor. Compton is part of a congressional district represented by a Latina lawmaker, but its first and sole Latino council member was ousted last year after being accused of election fraud.

… In 2021, during the city’s last mayoral election, Latinos made up an estimated 38 percent of votes cast despite being 50 percent of registered voters, according to a Washington Post analysis of voter registration data from the political data firm L2. Black residents accounted for roughly 45 percent of votes cast, while making up only 32 percent of registered voters.
The entrenched Black leadership has also done little to engage with the Hispanic community, Latino activists say, while clashing over the need for Spanish-speaking government workers. That has resulted in a lack of murals and monuments dedicated to Latino heroes, they say.
“It’s a very pro-Black environment right now in the administration within Compton,” Diaz said. “It’s just constant events and movements that are pro-Black and not necessarily for all in Compton.”
… Some Black residents say they fought too hard for political power to relinquish it just yet — and that Compton’s Black leaders are still battling racism from other racial groups.
“It’s like Game of Thrones. We have to keep this power, we have to keep the little bit that we have, which is all we have,” said Nina Childs, a Black local activist and filmmaker. “And we’re not giving it up.”
The story of people of color calling on White leaders to cede power for more diverse representation is deeply rooted in American history. But Compton reflects a newer power struggle, which experts say the nation may see more of in the years to come as traditional White and Black strongholds grow more Latino and the Latino community demands more political representation.
The tension is driven by the continued growth of the Latino population, already about one fifth of the country, while the White population declines and the share of the Black population stagnates.
It’s a not so great replacement.
… Conducting conversations about increasing Latino representation with her Black counterparts without appearing anti-Black is already challenging, said Orozco.
Compton has been at the center of fights for power before. It was once a predominantly White, wealthy community that actors like Kevin Costner called home in the 1950s.
Kevin Costner wasn’t an actor in the 1950s. Heck, the two Bushes weren’t Presidents when they lived in Compton in 1950.
Black people were kept out by racial covenants that prevented them from buying homes. As those restrictions were lifted, Black families moved in and White people left. In 1963, the city elected its first Black city council member, marking the start of Compton’s rise as an iconic Black stronghold.
But as the city’s crime rate exploded in the 1980s, some Black families began to leave for wealthier, safer communities. They were replaced by Mexican and Central American immigrants, some of them undocumented, seeking cheap rent and working class jobs.
… Compton didn’t elect its first Hispanic city council member, Isaac Galvan, until 2013, after a lawsuit against the city argued that the at-large council positions discriminated against Latino voters. It led to single district council seats, and Galvan served for nine years until being ousted after a judge ruled he had rigged votes to win his 2021 reelection campaign. Galvan denied the allegations.
… Although about 65 percent of residents speak a language other than English at home, some government documents are still not translated into Spanish, local events rarely incorporate Latino cultural touchstones — such as mariachi troupes or papel picado — and Latinos are not represented enough in the artwork across the city, local Hispanic advocates say.
… Recently, President Biden signed a bill, introduced by one of the city’s two congresswomen, Nanette Diaz Barragán (D), to rename a post office after James Anderson Jr. — a Compton native who was the first Black Marine to earn a Medal of Honor.
So for once we have an extremely worthy black hero to honor, rather than a violent homeless bum or whatever, and the next group in line is sore about him.

The Compton Courthouse is the second-worst place I’ve ever been. Spent a week on a jury there for an attempted murder trial about 15 years ago. What a mess.
The racial demography of LA County is fascinating if you can get past the juvenile takes on redlining. I’d be interested to know the real details on how Boyar, Weingart and Taper, three Jews (and Boyar was a sort of Super-Jew), ended up founding Lakewood, which was extremely white from the start and to this day is almost Midwestern in its whiteness. The account usually goes that the area had racial covenants, but that by the time Boyar, Weingart and Taper showed up, those had been nullified by the courts, so of course Lakewood was always open to all races…yet it’s still the only white part of LA County you can get into for under a million. How did they work that?

Lakewood HS is about 20% non hispanic white.
Never been there, but it seems like an inconvenient location surrounded by run down third worldish old suburban tract home areas. Lots of three bedroom one bath houses on small lots.

The Democrat political whores in Chicago could care less about the voters. Chinatown Alderman voters had an Italian ex-cop running against Chinese female Nicole Lee, a Mayor Lightfoot appointee. The ex-cop sent out a flyer talking about how Lee voted for the CTA Red Line extension financing, in which Chinatown residents would PAY FOR the Red Line extension for Blacks past the 95th Street train stop via TIF funding. She won by a landslide in the runoff election.
Such is the voter in Chicago.
For nonelective city jobs, merit hiring went out the window due to disparate impact, and current hiring favors relatives and friends of current black employees, who know the ins and outs.
It’s like the D.C Metro and military jobs like quartermasters.
The black middle class would not exist without these sorts of shenanigans. This kind of thing is the real “reparations.”
For Army blacks. You don't want Navy blacks navigating the ship.

What’s a Latino? While Blacks may be a smaller demographic they probably all identify as Black. The Latinos probably have multiple ancestries from many different locations and don’t identify with each other in a coherent manner. So when there is an elections Blacks are the largest coherent ethnic group.
The issue might no be ethnic. Maybe it is old people, Black and other, voting for their SS increases against the interests of the youth.

On the topic of California blacks, the NYT has had multiple articles this week revealing Dyin’ Feinstein to be a drooling, damaged mess. Very unflattering. Why are they doing this? Apparently they want her to resign so that Newsom can replace her with a sacred black female who would become the automatic front runner in 2024 senate regular election. Everything seems to come down to black worship now.

In the surrounding communities of the original black ghetto of Central Avenue and Watts, and in the cities of Huntington Park and South Gate, white Angelenos were developing a dissatisfaction for the growing black population that was migrating from the South during WWII. During the 1940s, resentment from the white community grew as several blacks challenged the legal housing discrimination laws that prevented them from purchasing property outside the original settlement neighborhoods and integrate into the public schools. Areas outside of the original black settlement of Los Angeles were neighborhoods covered by legally enforced, racially restrictive covenants or deed restrictions. This practice, adapted by white homeowners, was established in 1922 and was designed to maintain social and racial homogeneity of neighborhoods by denying non-whites access to property ownership.—
—In Huntington Park, Bell, and South Gate, towns that were predominately white, teenagers formed some of the early street clubs during the 1940s. One of the most infamous clubs of that time was the Spook Hunters, a group of white teenagers that often attacked black youths. If blacks were seen outside of the black settlement area, which was roughly bounded by Slauson to the South, Alameda Avenue to the east, and Main[5] Street to the west, they were often attacked. The name of this club emphasized their racist attitude towards blacks, as Spook Hunters is a derogatory term used to identify blacks and ?Hunters? highlighted their desire to attack blacks as their method of fighting integration and promoting residential segregation. Their animosity towards blacks was publicly known; the back of their club jackets displayed an animated black face with exaggerated facial features and a noose hanging around the neck. The Spook Hunters would often cross Alameda traveling west to violently attack black youths from the area. In Thrasher’s study of Chicago gangs, he observed a similar white gang in Chicago during the 1920s, the Dirty Dozens, who often attacked black youths with knives, blackjacks, and revolvers because of racial differences (Thrasher 1963:37). Raymond Wright was one of the founders of a black club called the Businessmen, a large East side club based at South Park between Slauson Avenue and Vernon Avenue. He stated that, “you couldn’t pass Alameda, because those white boys in South Gate would set you on fire,?[6] and fear of attack among black youths was not, surprisingly, common. In 1941, white students at Fremont High School threatened blacks by burning them in effigy and displaying posters saying, “we want no ni##ers at this school” (Bunch 1990: 118). There were racial confrontations at Manual Arts High School on Vermont and 42nd Street, and at Adams High School during the 1940s (Davis 1990:293). In 1943, conflicts between blacks and whites occurred at 5th and San Pedro Streets, resulting in a riot on Central Avenue (Bunch 1990:118). white clubs in Inglewood, Gardena, and on the West side engaged in similar acts, but the Spook Hunters were the most violent of all white clubs in Los Angeles.—

A few morals of this Compton as Wakanda tale (struck me, from a safe 6000 miles away):
1. Blacks will let go of any power their (always local?) concentrations bestow on them with much less grace, let alone self abasing surrender, than whites.
2. The wrinkle in the shepherding of minorities to some rainbow coalition power seems to be that these blighters won’t turn out to vote. One way around this is to corrupt the judiciary, media etc etc into a minority-fawning stance. Another, revealed here, is that as a minority loses its grasp on power it can be successfully motivated to turn up at elections (the blacks vote over residence spread in Compton). Is this likely to be a ‘wash’ nationally? Ie declining minority residence shares offset by greater turnout?

I commuted to work for years on the DC Metrorail. Several years ago they ran a campaign asking the ridership to respect Metro bus drivers. The campaign posters featured the tiny handful of non-black Metro employees. The gaslighting in the campaign was off-the-charts.

Compton is 98% Black+Latino, yet Black+Latino voters are 82% and Black+Latino ballots are 83%. There is no arithmetic where the 2% non-Black+Latinos can be 18% of the voters, so that leaves two possibilities: the Washington Post+L2 analysis is incompetent, and/or the unexplained 15% of ballots come from 2AM ballot-dumps from the DNC headquarters.
Still with the lies about the black population share “stagnating”. I guess the WaPo never reads the census. In reality, the black population is growing the fastest of all native-born groups, is currently at about 16% and still rising.
Apparently, the White leaders were even more “deeply rooted in American history”, y’know, if we’re having a contest over deep-rootedness…

This piece does highlight the fact that Latinos are a lot less interested in voting than blacks, so the latter still have disproportionate political power even in areas where they shouldn’t, not to mention the nation at large. This will likely be the case for quite awhile, since the primary political interests of blacks are a) not to have government come down on them or their relatives for bad behavior, b) have government subsidize their lives through the social welfare system or job opportunities. Lose one or both of those things and a lot more blacks go to jail and just as many lose easy jobs with decent benefits, so pretty high stakes compared to everyone else.
Still, situations like Compton will force Latinos to ask themselves just how much blackness they are willing to put up with, and I think there will come a time relatively soon when a critical mass realizes the answer is ‘very little’ if they are willing to be a bit more organized about it. That will give cover to a lot of middle of the road whites and Asians to pay less deference as well because they can simply line up with another minority group to salve their consciences.

The racial demography of LA County is fascinating if you can get past the juvenile takes on redlining. I'd be interested to know the real details on how Boyar, Weingart and Taper, three Jews (and Boyar was a sort of Super-Jew), ended up founding Lakewood, which was extremely white from the start and to this day is almost Midwestern in its whiteness. I would have to disagree about the city being in an inconvenient location; it is 15 minutes to local beaches and nearly all of the major LA freeways are minutes away.
You are absolutely spot on about the racial makeup. It is a strange suburban city, as there is a sort of holdout of whites in a very specific region/neighborhood . Many of these whites seem to have roots in the city spanning back many generations. Many of them also appear to be very blue collar, something you would almost never see in the neighboring beach cities (hardcore SWPL whites).
The city is quite functional, but I am not too sanguine about its future. As you noted, the younger demographic is decidedly nonwhite. I predict that it will follow a similar trajectory as other formerly nice suburban cities in the area like Downey and Norwalk. These cities, while semi-functional, are majority Latino and not the kind of place most here would find suitable to raise a family.
New York State has much the same silliness in its Human Rights Law (the state equivalent of a federal civil rights statute) because, well, the Dems run state government from top to bottom, much like California.

The explosion of Black violence as a result of White racism is not as good of an explanation for the crime wave as just comparing the crime rates. Was in North Platte Nebraska in 2017 and the maids and cooks were all white (and very friendly). Left some very nice tips for these remnants of a better time.
Often the only non-white in the motel is a South Asian owner.

There is a Compton type political analogy in Houston TX right now.
The Houston Independent School District (HISD), one of the largest in the US, and biggest one in Texas, was for recent decades run by a self perpetuating Democrat Party black mafia who got themselves re-elected with white liberal money. A few Hispanics in recent times also.
But in the past 10 years Hispanics have outnumbered blacks (and Asians, Whites) and in the last election (around 2018 or so) managed to gain a majority on the HISD school board, which actually runs the district.
As this board tried to manage the racial spoils system, it fell apart in a series of lawsuits by mainly Black! losers and school administrators who were being pushed out. Also due to the turnover, a huge amount of corruption and graft was uncovered. My, my.
The board became so dysfunctional that the Texas Supreme Court appointed a legal Trustee to be the temporary chief executive. Finally, now the State Board of Education has installed a temporary leadership cadre of outsiders as per state law when local boards collapse or fail to follow the law.
This has been going on for many years, though COVID also brought delays. As of June this year the appointed State Board will take over. Local Dem establishment and their newspaper mouthpiece the Houston Chronicle are wailing and moaning.
“Undemocratic!”, etc. This has taken years and meanwhile educational performance scores are dropping. Charter schools popular. Looks like the Hispanic-Asian coalition will eventually force out the black mafia and their White female liberal enablers. (Most local Whites and Asians live in suburbs with their own school districts.)
Not sure when actual elections will resume. The Comrades prefer chaos and failure to actual change of leadership. Just like the Old Times in the USSR!
I have a vague memory of talk that Jaimie Foxx wanted to make a movie about the Zebra Killings. The hero of the story was to be one of the black detectives investigating the case who, despite trying to solve a crime involving black perps and white victims, was himself the victim of white racism within the force. My takeaway:
In Compton Negros cast 45% of votes, Indio/Hispanics cast 38%, and “Others” cast 17%. A dominant 55% of those voting are not Negro. Eventually the Indio/Hispanics and “Others” will join forces to get rid of the current Negro, i.e corrupt and incompetent, government.
On the national level Negros constitute somewhere between 12% and 15% of the population. This proportion is falling.
Demonstrating their collective stupidity and/or failing to realize how thoroughly despised and feared is collective Negro dysfunction, Negros imagine that a decreasing proportion of Whites will increase the collective power of Negros. Instead Whites will remain a plurality and will eventually choose to align with other, non-Negro, racial power blocks.

There is another factor involved here, though. I think there is an authoritarian personality type, and he is an extreme example of that. During the Covid epidemic he was an ardent supporter of mandatory lockdowns, vaccinations and mask wearing. When I tried to make the moral case to him for not forcing someone to get a vaccination they don't want I was met with extreme hostility and sneering insults such as I was "afraid of needles". He is also hostile to marijuana use and I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to bring back Prohibition, except this time replacing alcohol with marijuana.
His indifference to the authoritarianism of Zelensky also extends to an indifference to the authoritarianism of a medieval theocracy and its ally, the kings of Europe. You are correct, of course, but here is what I think is going on. I believe the comment is intended to sustain the historical fiction that the United States under the Constitution was formed as an organic state with organic powers to which it could not be deprived. This error posits that the constitutional confederacy/union was different in this regard from the earlier confederacy under the Articles and that its authority over each state was not dependent on the acquiescence of those states as was the case with the Articles. There is, of course, nothing in the constitution to permit such an interpretation and Jus. Story’s alleged location of such authority in the preamble constitutes probably the greatest legal error in American history assuming that was Story’s intention (a matter not particularly clear). Nevertheless, it suited Lincoln’s purposes to assign Story such an intent and I suspect persons making the claim you object to are simply perpetuating this error. North and South Europeans have about the same amount of Neanderthal DNA (N-DNA).
One article I found fairly convincing said that because of “purifying” evolution N-DNA is less likely to be functional. So 2.5% of our genome but maybe 1% of our genes that do anything.
Modern Northern European as we think of them only came into existence in the past 8,000 years or so. That’s way after Neanderthal went extinct, about 40,000 years ago.

I agree it is fairly likely HA is not a native of this country. While his English is good, he uses some grammatical constructions not common among Americans. His extreme pro-Ukraine stance may involve ethnic hostility to Russia.
There is another factor involved here, though. I think there is an authoritarian personality type, and he is an extreme example of that. During the Covid epidemic he was an ardent supporter of mandatory lockdowns, vaccinations and mask wearing. When I tried to make the moral case to him for not forcing someone to get a vaccination they don’t want I was met with extreme hostility and sneering insults such as I was “afraid of needles”. He is also hostile to marijuana use and I wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted to bring back Prohibition, except this time replacing alcohol with marijuana.
His indifference to the authoritarianism of Zelensky also extends to an indifference to the authoritarianism of a medieval theocracy and its ally, the kings of Europe. The 18th century Enlightenment era and its product, the American Revolution, was a rebellion against that so he would not be supportive of our traditional American political system with its belief in the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for everyone.

You are correct, of course, but here is what I think is going on. I believe the comment is intended to sustain the historical fiction that the United States under the Constitution was formed as an organic state with organic powers to which it could not be deprived. This error posits that the constitutional confederacy/union was different in this regard from the earlier confederacy under the Articles and that its authority over each state was not dependent on the acquiescence of those states as was the case with the Articles. There is, of course, nothing in the constitution to permit such an interpretation and Jus. Story’s alleged location of such authority in the preamble constitutes probably the greatest legal error in American history assuming that was Story’s intention (a matter not particularly clear). Nevertheless, it suited Lincoln’s purposes to assign Story such an intent and I suspect persons making the claim you object to are simply perpetuating this error. They are, in essence, making a distinction between a confederacy and an organic state. I cannot stress enough that this distinction is an false one.

The Irish didn’t bring a huge amount of crime, nothing like what’s going on today. An interesting book about the Irish by Hasia Diner (who was Jewish), mentions the relatively low level of serious crime. There were criminal elements, but nothing like the crime that everyone today worries about when they walk the streets of most cities. Much the same about Italians although criminality was funneled into their own kind of gangs, so to speak, and didn’t greatly affect those not associated.
