I’ve been reading some more literary critics extoll Mohsin Hamid’s new novel The Last White Man about a world in which white people wake up in the morning with dark skin, which eventually leads to a happy ending where the problems caused by white people fade away.

I’m struck by how every single critic seems to think of race as being purely a matter of skin color.

Thus, if George Floyd had only woken up one morning with white skin, nobody would have ever noticed that he used to be black, and he would have been free to pass all the counterfeit sawbucks he felt like.

Or at least that’s how book reviewers would seem to think about the question, if they ever asked themselves hard questions about race.

In the novel, Anders, presumably some kind of Nordic, takes a week off from work at the gym to hide his shame that his skin is much darker. When he returns with his new browner skin, his boss tells him he would have committed suicide instead of accepting his fate.

In reality, of course, Scandinavians named Anders frequently take a week off work and then return with darker skin color from lying on the beach in Majorca. Nobody thinks they’ve changed race. Their facial structure doesn’t change at all. They just look like whites with a dark tan. (Scandinavians tans quite well.)

So, one obvious question literary critics might have asked is: What else changed besides Anders’ skin color to keep his friends from asking him where he went on vacation? Did his hair change? His facial structure? His skull shape? His musculature? The proportions of his skeleton? His brain?

And if everything changed in Anders to make him convincingly look like a member of a darker race, which darker race did he look like? Did he look like, say, Mohsin Hamid or like George Floyd?

Or do literary critics find that all nonwhites look the same to them?

It’s much simpler to keep repeating the mantra that race is just a social construct and has no biological reality other than skin color.

But it sure dumbs things down.

  4. Hmm, it is a novel, not a book on Anthropology or Genetics. George Langelaan wrote a story about a person who became a fly (the insect). It was even made into a movie. Another Asian Briton, Rushdie, has written many similar works of fantasy fiction – like falling out of an airplane and having dreams etc., Fiction is all about exploring with our mind, on that scale, waking up with a different skin color is pretty tame.

Georgia couple charged with using their adopted children to make child porn

A Georgia couple has been charged with using their two adopted children to record child pornography, police said.

Walton County Sheriff’s Office raided a home in Loganville July 27 on reports that a man there was downloading child porn.

After interviewing the suspect, who was not identified, police said they learned there was another suspect in the county who was “producing homemade child sexual abuse material with at least one child who lived in the home,” the sheriff’s office said Thursday.

Around 11:30 p.m. that same night, executed a search warrant in Oxford at the home of William Dale Zulock, 32, and Zachary Jacoby Zulock, 35.

Walton County’s Division of Family and Child Services joined deputies in responding to the home to help protect the two brothers who lived there.

During their search, deputies found evidence the pair, who were the children’s adoptive fathers, “were engaging in sexually abusive acts and video documenting this abuse,” the sheriff’s office said.

Early the next morning, the Zulocks were both booked at the Walton County Jail.

Both men were charged with aggravated child molestation, sexual exploitation of a child and enticing a child for indecent purposes, WSBTV reported. William Zulock was additionally charged with child molestation.

What the hell is wrong is that judges are jerks and listen to social workers, who are worthless. Judges are jerks for a number of reasons, but the main one being they're drawn from one of the jerk segments of the legal profession. Many lawyers are jerks, which doesn't differentiate them from the modal type in and among the professional-managerial bourgeoisie. That segment of society is addled by the notion that they know better than previous generations. They think that way because they are jerks.

  10. This fantasy does sort of “solve”–or more aptly “hide”–Mohsin Hamid’s issue, which is that his appearance is a constant reminder that these unimpressive white goobers built the society which he actually prefers living in compared to the one his (aristocratic) people were in charge of. Old Mohsin will still know this, of course, but he won’t have it rubbed in his face.

However, this fantasy doesn’t do much for the big problem.

Let’s do the reverse fantasy and everyone wakes up looking white one morning. (Everyone waking up looking black is just too painful to contemplate.) What the heck happens?

Well, if it’s just appearance … then not much.

Ok the cops job just got a heck of a lot harder. But now at least they get to go back–at least temporarily–to confronting the scumbags policing.

But almost immediately the whining will start about the poorer economic status and higher proportion of “justice involved” persons among TPFKAB (the people formerly known as blacks) due to past structural racism. Reparations are due!

Or: if “race” is real, then why is it that physiologists and biochemists cannot find any discernible and exclusive trait that pertains to “race” in human metabolism? Why not define “race” by eye color, in which case a black man with blue eyes and a Scandinavian with blue eyes would be of the same “race”, and of a different “race” than a brown-eyed Spaniard? There is no reason why not to. It is as good as skin coloration and the shap of the nose bridge, which the 19th century and early 2oth centuries “scientists” used to define race.

The hard question to ask about race is why we are so obsessed with it, given that racism was pretty much destroyed fifty years ago, and the answer is that our elites are obsessed with it (and so the rest of us have to be, too), and the reason our elites are obsessed with it is because it helps give them power. (Also, if they focused on class, they would be made uncomfortable, and that wouldn’t do.) If racism, especially systemic racism exists, then they must be allowed to act to eliminate it. Never mind that systemic racism was eliminated fifty years ago. Never mind that the only discernible systemic racism these days is found in affirmative-action policies, which are there to help blacks.

If our elites weren’t around, things would be much better. Blacks who complained about the plight of blacks would be told that blacks engaged in self-destructive behaviors and that blacks would be helped if they were to stop. Blacks would be strongly discouraged from taking up a life of crime. (George Floyd, had he lived in such an environment, would have led a blameless life as a trucker or a plumber or something similar.) If they complained about “racist” tests, they would be told to study harder. If they talked about the troubled past (like the murder of Emmet Till), they would be told to think instead about the bright future that awaits them, so long as they avoid self-destructive behavior.

Unfortunately, our elites rule, and they have crazy ideas about things. They are leftists, and for well over a century, leftists have believed that crime is a good thing for the marginalized (first the poor, and now blacks). Crime hurts blacks more than it helps them, but our elites refuse to acknowledge this. Instead, we have to put up with them making stupid claims that more blacks in prison is indicative of racism rather than being the obvious result of more blacks becoming criminals. Crime in black communities leads to businesses being abandoned, and then we have to hear about “food deserts” and how they are the result of racism rather than the rampant crime that obviously caused them. Despite all of the clamor about black lives mattering, we all know that our elites don’t really care about the many blacks killed by other blacks. Their lives didn’t matter at all. Nor do they care when blacks attack Asians, once they realized it was mostly blacks and not whites doing so.

Face it, the elites’ approach to racial problems has been a disaster, but they cannot acknowledge that, and so they double down on the only approach they know, which is coddling blacks and bashing “deplorable” whites. We shouldn’t even need to talk about race. We should be talking about class instead, but that wouldn’t serve the needs of our elites.

Race is based on ancestry. It has absolutely nothing to do with physiognomic or physical traits. And, yes, it is arbitrary, but that's not a criticism. The arbiter can draw the boundaries as narrowly or as broadly as he wishes as long as the denoted race meets the criteria of a race.

It’s time to apply lifeboat effects to the situation. There is one demographic that created western civilization, and that demographic is the white people from Europe.

Right now we have people who did not create civilization, and who are hostile to our demographic, demanding to be in charge. But as we have seen, they are not capable of managing even their own societies, Haiti and Uganda for example, and yet they are trying to take over hours.

Without a doubt, there were problems in white society 60. 70, 80 or more years ago, but those problems pale in comparison to the problems now brought to white society by people who did not make that society . It is past time to cut them loose.

"Thus, if George Floyd had only woken up one morning with white skin, nobody would have ever noticed that he used to be black, and he would have been free to pass all the counterfeit sawbucks he felt like."

If George Floyd were white, he'd be alive today. I can notice that blond-haired women look different than brunette-haired women. Is it genetic? Hair dye apart, usually yes. Is this relevant? No.

"Or at least that’s how book reviewers would seem to think about the question, if they ever asked themselves hard questions about race."

I have asked myself the hard questions about "race" many times. For instance: if race is real, then why no one talked about race before modern European colonialism? Or: if "race" is real, then why is it that physiologists and biochemists cannot find any discernible and exclusive trait that pertains to "race" in human metabolism? If race is real, then why can people of different "races" produce non-sterile offspring? Those are the hard questions, not the ones that you ask that are the pure fruit of bias shallow thinking. Maybe you are just not smart enough to notice these facts.

"In the novel, Anders, presumably some kind of Nordic, takes a week off from work at the gym to hide his shame that his skin is much darker. When he returns with his new browner skin, his boss tells him he would have committed suicide instead of accepting his fate.In reality, of course, Scandinavians named Anders frequently take a week off work and then return with darker skin color from lying on the beach in Majorca. Nobody thinks they’ve changed race. Their facial structure doesn’t change at all. They just look like whites with a dark tan. (Scandinavians tans quite well.)"

You know what is far more relevant than face structure? Things like blood groups, methylation ability, Apolipoprotein E genotype, lactose tolerance, etc, and *none of these things are determinable or definable by race *.

The problem here is that you and your followers *want* "race" to be real. And therein lies the problem...

"Race" is an arbitrary construct based on physionomic traits that, yes, are genetically inherited but have little biological consequence. For instance, I have seen black people with blue eyes, and I am talking here "black" people with no European ancestry. Why not define "race" by eye color, in which case a black man with blue eyes and a Scandinavian with blue eyes would be of the same "race", and of a different "race" than a brown-eyed Spaniard? There is no reason why not to. It is as good as skin coloration and the shap of the nose bridge, which the 19th century and early 2oth centuries "scientists" used to define race.

It seemed to me the point of it was to mock black conspiracy theories about how the Whites were "keeping them down," because all the situations shown in the skit were ludicrous. Whites *don't* actually treat each other that way. Or did you think that was a documentary?

There was also a painting by Norman Rockwell depicting a black family moving into a white neighborhood that clearly implied that the blacks were just white people with much darker skin.

I live in an upper middle class subdivision in the far exurbs of Houston. Pretty much lily white with a smattering of East Asians and Indians, but for the most part the neighborhood is mostly just middle class white people who have lots of children of all ages and who drive SUV's and large Ford pickups. We have pretty strict deed restrictions that were aggressively enforced up until we were annexed by the neighboring suburb city a couple of years ago, which is part of the problem in the story below.

The story is, a group of blacks moved into a house down the street from mine about a year ago. The landscaping has since deteriorated to where the flower beds have pretty much been overgrown with grass and there are always cheap plastic children's toys left out on the front walk and next to the front door. Long prior to the Africans moving in, a shade tree died in the front yard that was never replaced and now the house sits in direct sunlight during the afternoon. The wooden siding on the eaves and fascia board is peeling and cracking.

The house is starting to look like one in one of those older suburbs closer in - Alief, Quail Valley - that the whites abandoned about 30-40 years ago. Like, it's clear that it used to be tidy and nice in a tidy and nice neighborhood, but the lack of landscaping and upkeep over the years has ruined it.

Point being, I think our neighborhood can handle this one single house going downhill, but if we got 2-3 more families like that, I think it would ruin the neighborhood more permanently and we would start to decline.

You can't tell me race is just skin color. It's uncanny how the residents of this house have lived up (down) to the stereotype. And it's not like they are poor - we are probably the top quintile of property values in the Houston area, so whether they own or rent, it's not cheap to live there and tear up the house like that.

After one of these dreams, the new reality is the only reality for everyone else, but George retains memory of the previous reality. Under threat of incarceration, Orr undergoes treatment for his addiction.

George attends therapy sessions with ambitious psychiatrist and sleep researcher William Haber. Orr claims he has the power to dream "effectively". Haber, gradually believing the evidence, seeks to use George's power to change the planet. After Haber directs George to dream a world without racism, the skin of everyone on the planet becomes a uniform light gray.

Watermelon Man is a 1970 American comedy film directed by Melvin Van Peebles and starring Godfrey Cambridge, Estelle Parsons, Howard Caine, D'Urville Martin, Kay Kimberley, Mantan Moreland, and Erin Moran. Written by Herman Raucher, it tells the story of an extremely bigoted 1960s-era white insurance salesman named Jeff Gerber, who wakes up one morning to find that he has become black. The premise for the film was inspired by Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis, and by John Howard Griffin's autobiographical Black Like Me.

Yes but it makes more sense if you think in primary colors and believe that slavery generated all wealth in the United States, and was itself a transfer from slaves to all whites in some collective fashion. Now whites (be they second generation immigrant descended Pollacks or Slovaks in Chicago) have that stuff and it's that stuff that makes places nice, and South Chicago of the pre-Great Migration era was nice presumably because the people who had owned slaves gave stuff to the Eastern European immigrants because white people are nice to one another like that despite ethnic, linguistic, and religious differences.

Blacks in Chicago were the product of internal migrations largely from Mississippi (although the Robinsons are from South Carolina) so you'd expect that Mississippi would be fabulously wealthy as a result of the multigenerational appropriations of the products of slave labor. Someone should investigate and find out whether Mississippi is this Shangri-La which the theory predicts. Naturally, having been freed from chattel slavery, the migrants should have made South Chicago similarly wondrous due to their immense productive capacities. Does anybody have data on this to share?

There's a kernel there of a non-stupid sci fi novel: imagine a world in which we all looked alike. Ok, not 100% alike; we'd still be able to recognize our family and friends. Other than that, though, imagine it was impossible to deduce anything about someone's origin or personality just from his appearance. But there'd still be the full range of behavior, including people inclined to attack grandmothers at bus stops and get into fights at Chuck E. Cheese.

How would that world play out?

  40. As I have commented before, the left loves the term ‘diversity’ but resolutely ignores that it implicitly admits that there there are a broad spectrum of differences between different groups, and it’s the differences in behavior, interests, and capabilities that drive the rather large gaps in economic and cultural performance, not skin tone or hair texture.

I have not read this book, but based on the excerpts it seems like this highly educated author is being incredibly obtuse, as are fawning reviewers, in taking the most superficial take on racial differences and perceptions possible. But it’s this superficial belief that is required in order to inflict DIE societal prescriptions on the rest of us. To go any deeper would require some honest and distressing discussions about black culture that are impossible for a political movement that relies on 90% plus voter performance from our most disappointing subpopulation to hold onto political power.

  43. Funny skin color anecdote:

As you may know, here in Japan, the fashion for many women is pale, pale white-as-possible skin. Women go around with special arm/hand sleeves and full-face sun shades in summer just to avoid even a little sunlight. Because they are Asian and not European, these women don’t lighten up into Caucasian shades of light pinks but turn a really porcelain white color.

Last week, I was at the beach for vacation and a group of young girls staked out their sand plot a few meters away. Unlike many women, 3 of these girls were sun worshippers who looked more like they belonged in SoCal than Japan. However, the 4th was fashionably white. Very white. And in her teeny tiny hunter-green bikini, the white stomach, white thighs, and rather large shapely and mostly exposed white behind really stood out.

Anyway, for some reason, it seems she managed to get sunscreen everywhere except on that exposed behind. By the end of the afternoon, she had a white, white body with a pink, pink booty. Quite a sight to behold!

No, according to science the Pollacks and Slovaks suffered from a sudden onset of trichophobia upon first sight of the dark tight curls of the Afro-American’s head. The common application of viscous sauces made from chili peppers and vinegar to all manner of foods was an exacerbating factor.

The robberies and murders were just the excuse that they used to justify moving.

Thus endeth my Princeton Undergraduate Senior Thesis.

Yes but it makes more sense if you think in primary colors and believe that slavery generated all wealth in the United States, and was itself a transfer from slaves to all whites in some collective fashion. Now whites (be they second generation immigrant descended Pollacks or Slovaks in Chicago) have that stuff and it’s that stuff that makes places nice, and South Chicago of the pre-Great Migration era was nice presumably because the people who had owned slaves gave stuff to the Eastern European immigrants because white people are nice to one another like that despite ethnic, linguistic, and religious differences.

Blacks in Chicago were the product of internal migrations largely from Mississippi (although the Robinsons are from South Carolina) so you’d expect that Mississippi would be fabulously wealthy as a result of the multigenerational appropriations of the products of slave labor. Someone should investigate and find out whether Mississippi is this Shangri-La which the theory predicts. Naturally, having been freed from chattel slavery, the migrants should have made South Chicago similarly wondrous due to their immense productive capacities. Does anybody have data on this to share?

So-called “slavery” wasn’t even a transfer from “slaves” to some whites. The African Americans were better off under white tutelage than they would have been anyplace else.

Hmm, it is a novel, not a book on Anthropology or Genetics. George Langelaan wrote a story about a person who became a fly (the insect). It was even made into a movie. Another Asian Briton, Rushdie, has written many similar works of fantasy fiction - like falling out of an airplane and having dreams etc., Fiction is all about exploring with our mind, on that scale, waking up with a different skin color is pretty tame.

“Race” is an arbitrary construct based on physionomic [sic] traits that, yes, are genetically inherited but have little biological consequence.

Race is based on ancestry. It has absolutely nothing to do with physiognomic or physical traits. And, yes, it is arbitrary, but that’s not a criticism. The arbiter can draw the boundaries as narrowly or as broadly as he wishes as long as the denoted race meets the criteria of a race.

Cheese.

The Case of the Colorblind Painter
    Oliver Sacks and Robert Wasserman
    November 19, 1987 issue

    [...]
The weeks that followed were very difficult. “You might think,” Mr. I. said, “loss of color vision, what’s the big deal? Some of my friends said this, my wife sometimes thought this, but to me, at least, it was awful, disgusting.” It was not just that colors were missing, but that what he did see had a distasteful, “dirty” look, the whites glaring, yet discolored and off-white, the blacks cavernous—everything wrong, unnatural, stained, and impure.

Mr. I. could hardly bear the changed appearances of people (“like animated gray statues”) any more than he could bear his own changed appearance in the mirror: he shunned social intercourse and found sexual intercourse impossible. He saw people’s flesh, his wife’s flesh, his own flesh, as an abhorrent gray; “flesh-colored” now appeared “rat-colored” to him.

If those cluster by race then why not use race?

Genetic characteristics also cluster by breed. Do dog breeds not exist? Should we not use the word breed? Why not?

Do you have a homeowner's association? If it has rules about property upkeep, they might be able to cite the property owner for non-compliance, or even bring the property into compliance and put a lien on it for the cost of doing so. Some jurisdictions have requirements that trees be replaced when they die. But sorry to hear about your problem--a microcosm of an important aspect of racial conflict in the U.S. Race is a lot more than skin deep.

    Funny skin color anecdote:

As you may know, here in Japan, the fashion for many women is pale, pale white-as-possible skin. Women go around with special arm/hand sleeves and full-face sun shades in summer just to avoid even a little sunlight. Because they are Asian and not European, these women don't lighten up into Caucasian shades of light pinks but turn a really porcelain white color.

(I feel like I posted this story already, but I was probably drunk and don't remember for sure...)

The Case of the Colorblind Painter
    Oliver Sacks and Robert Wasserman
    November 19, 1987 issue

    […]

He saw people’s flesh, his wife’s flesh, his own flesh, as an abhorrent gray; “flesh-colored” now appeared “rat-colored” to him.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Anthropologist_on_Mars

“The Case of the Colorblind Painter” discusses an accomplished artist who is suddenly struck by cerebral achromatopsia or the inability to perceive color due to brain damage.

On talk shows, her line is that Whites moved out and took the tax money with them.

Highlights her belief that wealth is not generated; it is something found by the lucky.

But it also depends on the alphabet, a Phoenician invention, and the idea of writing itself, which in the West comes from Egypt. At any point in history, most inventions will come from one part of the world because it is the most advanced at that particular time. So while most important inventions of the past few hundred years were made by white people, that is only because they have been on top during that time frame.

—Abstract ideals of universality” were not invented by “whites”, they were created by various ethnic and cultural groups. “Western man” refers to the designation Europeans put on themselves to distinguish themselves from other groups.

—The notion of “whites” or “European-whites” being bound together came about as a result of Social Darwinism and imperialism in the late 1800’s–the distinction that separated “us” from “them”. In this manner, the “lowest-rung” whites were deemed superior in social standing than their darkie counterparts, while at the same time knew full well their “pecking order” within the European hierarchy.

–When Italy unified, northern Italians in Lombardy saw the threat of southern peoples, the Sicilians or Neapolitans, as racially enervating. They were thought to be different because of their hot-blooded, less rational characters—elements believed to emanate from their hotter climate and their proximity to Africa.

–To be a member of the Saxon “race” was to speak and live like a Saxon, as compared to other groups. Now, would a Saxon (or an Frank, or a Norman, or a Visogoth) in their heyday have referred to themselves as being “white”?

–There seems to be this conflation of “Western Civilization” and “whiteness” as embraced by the Alt Right today. To me, they are claiming “Since we have inherited the classics because they are our specific genetic and cultural legacy, we are a superior people by which all other peoples are measured and judged.

Now, put your white IQ to the test by answering this related question: What are your thoughts regarding Wesley A. Swift’s doctrine (he was founder of the Church of Jesus Christ Christian) that non-Caucasian peoples have no souls and therefore can never earn God’s favor or be saved?

  102. Establishment theory defenders follow a rather predictable pattern.

Step one: Present establishment racial theory under the assumption that any dissent must be on the part of ignorant, stupid and or evil White racists that refuse to face established scientific truths. Arrogantly repeat them as if said racists are simpletons that somehow missed them before dropping out of high school.

    Step two: Read the responses.

    Step three: Run away.

The renaissance wasn’t just the rediscovery of ancient texts, but also the realization that much of what the ancients believed (especially about science and nature) was just plain wrong. Copernicus and Galileo weren’t just contradicting the church, but also contradicting all the respected teachers of the past, even predating Christianity. It was a hell of thing to do, to overturn thousands of years of accepted wisdom.

(Indeed, Einstein deserves similar respect for having the courage to overturn Galileo and Newton. Again, a hell of a thing to do.)

What if your dreams could change reality? This is the dilemma faced by George Orr in this film version of Ursula K. Le Guin's 1971 novel "The Lathe Of Heaven". New York City's public television station WNET produced this film in 1979 with the assistance of the author and originally broadcast it in 1980. Ms. Le Guin has always expressed her satisfaction with this adaptation of her classic work. For more info on the book, go here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lathe_of_Heaven

A surprisingly good “TV movie” from PBS. They also did Vonnegut’s “From Time to Timbuktu” which was also good, I hear.

Then PBS returned to expected form with “Overdrawn at the Memory Bank,” a cyberspacey future dystopia as imagined by public television on a budget of \$48, which despite starring Raul Julia and a Jackie Burroughs cameo, was literally MST3k-worthy:

Raul Julia’s accent, plus a mouthful of soup, plus poor editing, resulted in the immortal exchange with Jackie Burroughs:

Yes we do. His femoral blood level was midrange for an overdose death and the state's own forensic scientists admitted on the stand they'd have identified the cause of death as a fentanyl overdose and / or coronary artery disease had he been found dead in a hotel room. The 'knee on the neck' as a cause of death was an excuse employed by the jury and the professional class types out for Chauvin to send him up for decades for doing his job.

Dr. Andrew Baker, Hennepin County’s chief medical examiner, said Floyd died after police “subdual, restraint and neck compression” caused his heart and lungs to stop. He said heart disease and drug use were factors but not the “top line” causes. He said Floyd had an enlarged heart that needed more oxygen than normal, as well as narrowed arteries.

Dr. Martin Tobin, a pulmonologist and critical care specialist of Loyola University Medical Center, also testified during Chauvin's trial that Floyd died of a lack of oxygen from being pinned to the pavement with a knee on his neck. He added, “A healthy person subjected to what Mr. Floyd was subjected to would have died.

While findings from Floyd's autopsy revealed 11 nanograms per milliliter of fentanyl in his blood, medical experts called as prosecution witnesses agreed the amount of fentanyl was not enough to be considered fatal.

Dr. Daniel Isenschmid, a forensic toxicologist at NMS Labs in Pennsylvania, testified and presented data showing the levels of methamphetamine found in Floyd's system were lower than the average amount found in 94% of DUI cases in 2020.

Cardiologist Jonathan Rich told the court: "I can state with a high degree of medical certainty that George Floyd did not die from a primary cardiac event, and he did not die from a drug overdose.”

    Hat Tip —> Jack D

—It depends on who you call “white” and when you think the “modern world” began. Take for example the astrolabe, a key navigational tool. These were originally developed by the ancient Greeks but their knowledge was preserved by (or at least under – many of the scholars in the Arab world were not Muslim) the Arabs and the early European versions were bought from the Arab world. It’s hard to conceive today that Europe would depend on Arabs to provide them with high tech precision instruments but that was exactly the situation at one point.
In general, the Arabs were important in preserving Greek mathematics and scholarship during the period when the West was not interested in this stuff and so they helped set the stage for the Renaissance and for the wealth explosion that followed when Western explorers discovered the New World and opened up trade routes with Asia. The flip side of this was that the wealth of the Arab world waned because the new sea routes bypassed the overland Silk Route.—

Of course, “white inventions” or “western science”, while noteworthy in their original ideas and innovations, owe much to gunpowder, paper, the compass, and movable type (Chinese), to the number 0 (India), and to the idea of a rule-based, law-giving universal Creator (Middle East).
