I’ve been reading some more literary critics extoll Mohsin Hamid’s new novel The Last White Man about a world in which white people wake up in the morning with dark skin, which eventually leads to a happy ending where the problems caused by white people fade away.
I’m struck by how every single critic seems to think of race as being purely a matter of skin color.
Thus, if George Floyd had only woken up one morning with white skin, nobody would have ever noticed that he used to be black, and he would have been free to pass all the counterfeit sawbucks he felt like.
Or at least that’s how book reviewers would seem to think about the question, if they ever asked themselves hard questions about race.
In the novel, Anders, presumably some kind of Nordic, takes a week off from work at the gym to hide his shame that his skin is much darker. When he returns with his new browner skin, his boss tells him he would have committed suicide instead of accepting his fate.
In reality, of course, Scandinavians named Anders frequently take a week off work and then return with darker skin color from lying on the beach in Majorca. Nobody thinks they’ve changed race. Their facial structure doesn’t change at all. They just look like whites with a dark tan. (Scandinavians tans quite well.)
So, one obvious question literary critics might have asked is: What else changed besides Anders’ skin color to keep his friends from asking him where he went on vacation? Did his hair change? His facial structure? His skull shape? His musculature? The proportions of his skeleton? His brain?
And if everything changed in Anders to make him convincingly look like a member of a darker race, which darker race did he look like? Did he look like, say, Mohsin Hamid or like George Floyd?
Or do literary critics find that all nonwhites look the same to them?
It’s much simpler to keep repeating the mantra that race is just a social construct and has no biological reality other than skin color.
But it sure dumbs things down.

Hmm, it is a novel, not a book on Anthropology or Genetics. George Langelaan wrote a story about a person who became a fly (the insect). It was even made into a movie. Another Asian Briton, Rushdie, has written many similar works of fantasy fiction – like falling out of an airplane and having dreams etc., Fiction is all about exploring with our mind, on that scale, waking up with a different skin color is pretty tame.

This fantasy does sort of “solve”–or more aptly “hide”–Mohsin Hamid’s issue, which is that his appearance is a constant reminder that these unimpressive white goobers built the society which he actually prefers living in compared to the one his (aristocratic) people were in charge of. Old Mohsin will still know this, of course, but he won’t have it rubbed in his face.
However, this fantasy doesn’t do much for the big problem.
Let’s do the reverse fantasy and everyone wakes up looking white one morning. (Everyone waking up looking black is just too painful to contemplate.) What the heck happens?

I have asked myself the hard questions about “race” many times. For instance: if race is real, then why no one talked about race before modern European colonialism? Or: if “race” is real, then why is it that physiologists and biochemists cannot find any discernible and exclusive trait that pertains to “race” in human metabolism? If race is real, then why can people of different “races” produce non-sterile offspring? Those are the hard questions, not the ones that you ask that are the pure fruit of bias shallow thinking. You know what is far more relevant than face structure? Things like blood groups, methylation ability, Apolipoprotein E genotype, lactose tolerance, etc, and *none of these things are determinable or definable by race *.
The problem here is that you and your followers *want* “race” to be real. And therein lies the problem…
“Race” is an arbitrary construct based on physionomic traits that, yes, are genetically inherited but have little biological consequence. For instance, I have seen black people with blue eyes, and I am talking here “black” people with no European ancestry. Why not define “race” by eye color, in which case a black man with blue eyes and a Scandinavian with blue eyes would be of the same “race”, and of a different “race” than a brown-eyed Spaniard? There is no reason why not to. It is as good as skin coloration and the shap of the nose bridge, which the 19th century and early 2oth centuries “scientists” used to define race.

If our elites weren’t around, things would be much better. Blacks who complained about the plight of blacks would be told that blacks engaged in self-destructive behaviors and that blacks would be helped if they were to stop. Blacks would be strongly discouraged from taking up a life of crime. (George Floyd, had he lived in such an environment, would have led a blameless life as a trucker or a plumber or something similar.) If they complained about “racist” tests, they would be told to study harder. If they talked about the troubled past (like the murder of Emmet Till), they would be told to think instead about the bright future that awaits them, so long as they avoid self-destructive behavior.
Unfortunately, our elites rule, and they have crazy ideas about things. They are leftists, and for well over a century, leftists have believed that crime is a good thing for the marginalized (first the poor, and now blacks). Crime hurts blacks more than it helps them, but our elites refuse to acknowledge this. Instead, we have to put up with them making stupid claims that more blacks in prison is indicative of racism rather than being the obvious result of more blacks becoming criminals. Crime in black communities leads to businesses being abandoned, and then we have to hear about “food deserts” and how they are the result of racism rather than the rampant crime that obviously caused them. Despite all of the clamor about black lives mattering, we all know that our elites don’t really care about the many blacks killed by other blacks. Their lives didn’t matter at all. Nor do they care when blacks attack Asians, once they realized it was mostly blacks and not whites doing so.
Face it, the elites’ approach to racial problems has been a disaster, but they cannot acknowledge that, and so they double down on the only approach they know, which is coddling blacks and bashing “deplorable” whites. We shouldn’t even need to talk about race. We should be talking about class instead, but that wouldn’t serve the needs of our elites.

Reminds one of Eddie Murphy’s SNL skit where he lightens himself to pass as a white man so that he can go through society and observe white people’s reactions. Point of it was to show that whites treat their own kind quite well, especially when they think that they aren’t around peoples of color.

There was a book published in the early 1960s, Black Like Me, in which a white man deliberately darkened his skin using some kind of drugs, and then moved around the segregated south. At the time, it was considered a ripping exposé of how badly blacks were treated in the south because, race was just skin color, right?
There was also a painting by Norman Rockwell depicting a black family moving into a white neighborhood that clearly implied that the blacks were just white people with much darker skin.

There’s a kernel there of a non-stupid sci fi novel: imagine a world in which we all looked alike. Ok, not 100% alike; we’d still be able to recognize our family and friends. I live in an upper middle class subdivision in the far exurbs of Houston. Pretty much lily white with a smattering of East Asians and Indians, but for the most part the neighborhood is mostly just middle class white people who have lots of children of all ages and who drive SUV’s and large Ford pickups. We have pretty strict deed restrictions that were aggressively enforced up until we were annexed by the neighboring suburb city a couple of years ago, which is part of the problem in the story below.
The story is, a group of blacks moved into a house down the street from mine about a year ago. The landscaping has since deteriorated to where the flower beds have pretty much been overgrown with grass and there are always cheap plastic children’s toys left out on the front walk and next to the front door. Long prior to the Africans moving in, a shade tree died in the front yard that was never replaced and now the house sits in direct sunlight during the afternoon. The wooden siding on the eaves and fascia board is peeling and cracking.
The house is starting to look like one in one of those older suburbs closer in – Alief, Quail Valley – that the whites abandoned about 30-40 years ago. Like, it’s clear that it used to be tidy and nice in a tidy and nice neighborhood, but the lack of landscaping and upkeep over the years has ruined it.
Point being, I think our neighborhood can handle this one single house going downhill, but if we got 2-3 more families like that, I think it would ruin the neighborhood more permanently and we would start to decline.
You can’t tell me race is just skin color. It’s uncanny how the residents of this house have lived up (down) to the stereotype. And it’s not like they are poor – we are probably the top quintile of property values in the Houston area, so whether they own or rent, it’s not cheap to live there and tear up the house like that.

The hard question to ask about race is why we are so obsessed with it, given that racism was pretty much destroyed fifty years ago, and the answer is that our elites are obsessed with it (and so the rest of us have to be, too), and the reason our elites are obsessed with it is because it helps give them power. A) We’re pretty good at discerning small differences. I’m astounded that dairy farmers know their individual cows, cows that to the casual observers are pretty much clones.

I raise beef cattle, not dairy, but we really can't always recognize them. I have some Texas Longhorns, which like Holsteins (the most common dairy breed) have distinctive patterning and it can take me a moment to identify some of the more similar ones. But I also have some Black Angus and those things are practically indistinguishable. We have numbered ear tags on livestock to reduce confusion and allow specific tracking.
As I have commented before, the left loves the term ‘diversity’ but resolutely ignores that it implicitly admits that there there are a broad spectrum of differences between different groups, and it’s the differences in behavior, interests, and capabilities that drive the rather large gaps in economic and cultural performance, not skin tone or hair texture.
I have not read this book, but based on the excerpts it seems like this highly educated author is being incredibly obtuse, as are fawning reviewers, in taking the most superficial take on racial differences and perceptions possible. But it’s this superficial belief that is required in order to inflict DIE societal prescriptions on the rest of us. To go any deeper would require some honest and distressing discussions about black culture that are impossible for a political movement that relies on 90% plus voter performance from our most disappointing subpopulation to hold onto political power.

Funny skin color anecdote:
As you may know, here in Japan, the fashion for many women is pale, pale white-as-possible skin. Women go around with special arm/hand sleeves and full-face sun shades in summer just to avoid even a little sunlight. Because they are Asian and not European, these women don’t lighten up into Caucasian shades of light pinks but turn a really porcelain white color.
Last week, I was at the beach for vacation and a group of young girls staked out their sand plot a few meters away. Unlike many women, 3 of these girls were sun worshippers who looked more like they belonged in SoCal than Japan. However, the 4th was fashionably white. Very white. And in her teeny tiny hunter-green bikini, the white stomach, white thighs, and rather large shapely and mostly exposed white behind really stood out.
Anyway, for some reason, it seems she managed to get sunscreen everywhere except on that exposed behind. By the end of the afternoon, she had a white, white body with a pink, pink booty. Quite a sight to behold!

I raise beef cattle, not dairy, but we really can’t always recognize them. I have some Texas Longhorns, which like Holsteins (the most common dairy breed) have distinctive patterning and it can take me a moment to identify some of the more similar ones. Yes but it makes more sense if you think in primary colors and believe that slavery generated all wealth in the United States, and was itself a transfer from slaves to all whites in some collective fashion. I did my own yardwork until my kids were old enough to mow. Now I just do the edging and weedeating after they are done with the mower and the occasional flowerbed work.
And I pay people to fix the siding and the gutters. My job is to notice it and realize when it needs to be fixed, just like all of my white neighbors do.
But I do farm 20 acres of pecan trees, myself. Not this year, however, as you point out. Too hot and dry and all the trees care about right now is surviving. There will be no crop this fall.
We do have an HOA and they used to aggressively enforce the deed restrictions, but they seem to have fallen off almost completely right around the time the neighborhood was annexed. Not sure why or even if there is a connection, but it’s a coincidence that I and many of my neighbors have noticed.

As you may know, here in Japan, the fashion for many women is pale, pale white-as-possible skin. Women go around with special arm/hand sleeves and full-face sun shades in summer just to avoid even a little sunlight. Because they are Asian and not European, these women don't lighten up into Caucasian shades of light pinks but turn a really porcelain white color.
Last week, I was at the beach for vacation and a group of young girls staked out their sand plot a few meters away. Unlike many women, 3 of these girls were sun worshippers who looked more like they belonged in SoCal than Japan. However, the 4th was fashionably white. Very white. And in her teeny tiny hunter-green bikini, the white stomach, white thighs, and rather large shapely and mostly exposed white behind really stood out.
Anyway, for some reason, it seems she managed to get sunscreen everywhere except on that exposed behind. By the end of the afternoon, she had a white, white body with a pink, pink booty. Quite a sight to behold!

The presumption that whites just got “lucky” or that western civilization could have been built by anyone is easily belied by the lack of alternatives built by other cultures. Even the modern Chinese civilization at is base is built on western advancements. It’s also belied by what other races have accomplished in other places – Africa, Haiti, most of India, Native American reservations – once the whites left and they were put in charge.

Dr. Andrew Baker, Hennepin County’s chief medical examiner, said Floyd died after police “subdual, restraint and neck compression” caused his heart and lungs to stop. He said heart disease and drug use were factors but not the “top line” causes. He said Floyd had an enlarged heart that needed more oxygen than normal, as well as narrowed arteries.
Dr. Martin Tobin, a pulmonologist and critical care specialist of Loyola University Medical Center, also testified during Chauvin’s trial that Floyd died of a lack of oxygen from being pinned to the pavement with a knee on his neck. He added, “A healthy person subjected to what Mr. Floyd was subjected to would have died.
While findings from Floyd’s autopsy revealed 11 nanograms per milliliter of fentanyl in his blood, medical experts called as prosecution witnesses agreed the amount of fentanyl was not enough to be considered fatal.Â
Dr. Daniel Isenschmid, a forensic toxicologist at NMS Labs in Pennsylvania, testified and presented data showing the levels of methamphetamine found in Floyd’s system were lower than the average amount found in 94% of DUI cases in 2020.Â
Cardiologist Jonathan Rich told the court: “I can state with a high degree of medical certainty that George Floyd did not die from a primary cardiac event, and he did not die from a drug overdose.”
