Paranoia Twitter is in an uproar over allegations that some cadets at today’s Army-Navy football game flashed the “OK” sign by touching the index finger to the thumb, which as we all know now stands for White Power. Or something.

  1. Many people shouldn’t be near Twitter.

Or even the Internet for that matter.

A stir that started before October.

Why I Called It ‘Quantum Supremacy’

The words “quantum supremacy” — if not the concept — proved to be controversial for two reasons. One is that supremacy, through its association with white supremacy, evokes a repugnant political stance. The other reason is that the word exacerbates the already overhyped reporting on the status of quantum technology. I anticipated the second objection, but failed to foresee the first. In any case, the term caught on, and it has been embraced with particular zeal by the Google AI Quantum team.

I considered but rejected several other possibilities, deciding that quantum supremacy best captured the point I wanted to convey. One alternative is “quantum advantage,” which is also now widely used. But to me, “advantage” lacks the punch of “supremacy.” In a race, a horse has an advantage if it wins by a nose. In contrast, the speed of a quantum computer vastly exceeds that of classical computers, for certain tasks. At least, that’s true in principle.

People having a problem with that: totally bonkers.

The Supremacy Clause of the Constitution is racist. It should be the federal laws are no better than any other laws clause.

The Supreme Court should be the not really better than any other court.

Supreme Unction should be just another unction while we’re all still here.

Sauce Supreme should just be veloute with creme fraiche, nothing too tasty going on, really no better than College Inn chicken stock mixed with skim milk, you racist foodie hipster.

  4. My nephew is a Navy doctor working with divers in Hawaii. This summer he sent a picture of himself getting suited up flashing the ok sign. I told my sister he better be careful. She looked at me like I was crazy. I had to show her the ADL website. I hope she advised him.

  5. That’s a hand signal from a game middle school boys play. You make that sign down low and if you get somebody to look you get to kick them in the balls. Its a common prank to play on live tv broadcasts because you’re getting the whole world to “look.” I’m not sure when or by whom it was decided that the kick you in the balls signal would be falsely represented as the white power symbol. It must either be somebody really stupid or really gullible.

That’s what my 10 year old daughter said. I told her well watch out, because some people now think it’s something racist. She said it’s not racist. I said I know, but some people are dumb, and frankly, your principal isn’t all that bright, so be careful. She shrugged her shoulders and said ok, it’s kinda played out now anyway.

  6. You’re supposed to make the number 1 sign, for “the one race” now. Unfortunately. Babylon Bee has exposed that trick.

  7. Seriously, almost nobody on that football field was anywhere near competent. One or two of the linebackers, one of the offensive linemen, and one of the kickers did not embarrass themselves, the rest of them looked like fat high school kids playing against other fat high school kids.

I imagine that as the Navy score got larger and larger that lots of the West Point dudes were thinking hey this is great none of the football squad is gonna score with the ladies of West Point tonight, so we still have a fighting chance.

The applause for Trump was pretty impressive, lots of the cadets applauding today are going to be fighting for the USA 40 years from now, so let us all indulge ourselves in a little bit of nostalgia for the present, sure this is UNZ dot com which is full of ungrateful arrogant uninformed people who hate the USA and the military but that does not matter, because haters gonna hate, that is just their way of accepting the fact that they are losers in life !!!!

  8. You’d have to be nuts and/or ignorant to let any man under your name go to the service academies. They were totally corrupted by the feminazis decades ago, and exist to enforce the insanity under which we are forced to live. There hasn’t been a “class with balls” in a very long time.

'...the standard White Power”, but you can’t prove that’s what I mean, hur hur stunt...'

That's the dumbest thing I've read today---and that's after I checked out the achingly stupid Twitter feed.

At worst (or best, imo) one could reasonably find that the 'OK' sign was an act of defiance. But not in the way that simpletons like you describe. The real (and refreshing) defiance is towards a culture that continually redefines innocuous words and gestures as 'racist'--not because the culture actually cares about racism--but because it is hell bent on delineating new boundaries of power. In this way, our woke culture is not some Racism Watchdog, but rather a mangy mutt capriciously pissing all over the neighborhood to let everyone to he 'was here.'

At worst (or best imo) the kid was flipping the middle finger at the Establishment for concocting a stupid and arbitrary standard that the 'OK' sign is now racist.

Try this: Go watch 'Scent of a Woman'. Idiots whining about the 'OK' sign as racist are like prep school's headmaster (AKA The Establishment). The kids flashing 'OK' at the game are like 'Colonel Frank' (Al Pacino) and 'Charlie'.

Saying those cadets were flashing support of 'White Power' is like saying 'Scent of A Woman' supported conspiracy and cover-ups.

That’s an old college frat game.

I hold my hand just outside of your peripheral view, making the “okay” sign. If you look at it, I get to punch you on the arm as hard as I can.

The comedy that typically happens is other people around would see you doing it next to your potential victim, then it’s up to the victim to understand what’s happening, what the people around him are reacting to, and pretend it’s not there, or avoid looking at it. Comedy ensues.

Another comedic scenario is to do it to your frat friend during a stoic procedural event, like a wedding ceremony, funeral, or… graduation event. They will likely see it in their peripheral vision, and try to avoid acknowledgment so that you don’t embarrass him/her at the formal event. Comedy ensues. It’s the most fun when everyone knows what’s happening around the both of you.

This is what’s extremely likely to have occurred in this instance.

Never mind the far easier swim requirements in basic.

Ofc these snowflakeulous days, if you arrive at Coast Guard wretchedly unable to swim or learn to, and keep failing, they are, I understand, now required by policy to supply endless special training for the rockfish in question.

Sadly the non-saltwater component of Cape May PT is way diluted for the broads.

  44. Anon[286] • Disclaimer says:

    OT

Some of you have probably been following this. George Zimmerman has filed a lawsuit against Trayvon Martin’s parents, attorneys, and prosecutors alleging that they knowingly swapped in a fake witness for Trayvon’s girlfriend (who allegedly didn’t want to testify), the person Trayvon was speaking to on his cell phone. This fake witness was used as an “earwitness” to the incident. As you may remember, this bizarre, dumb, fat, ugly, unintelligible young woman could not read “cursive,” even when the cursive in question was a letter she supposedly wrote herself (she later testified that she used an amanuensis for her written correspondence).

This information comes from a right-wing documentarian, who previously made a documentary claiming that President Obama’s father was a different guy than the Kenyan guy. So he has been a little out there.

However, this time around he has a 2-hour documentary full of trial records, phone transcripts and tapes, and texts, as well as an expanded version in book form. He’s put in a lot of shoe leather and the detective story presentation is gripping. It reminded me of the way that the transgender golf club designer story was presented.

The two black Bloggingheads guys Professors Glenn Lowry and John McWhorter, think the evidence is convincing. Lowry, old horndog that he is, goes so far as to say, eureka, of course, it always seemed weird that a player like Trayvon would not have a hot girlfriend (the swapped out chick is hot). And McWhorter points out how deceptively edited the audio used in the media was, versus the full versions that the documentarian obtained.

Remember, this incident predated and teed off the Ferguson incident and the formation of BLM, so for it to be fake would be pretty serious.

The mainstream media reporting is limited to (1) Loser Zimmerman is harassing Trayvon’s grieving family, and (2) the lawsuit is connected to an alt-right conspiracy nut. The witness swap is not mentioned even to be rejected or ridiculed, I think because it is so lurid and shocking, and when looked into seems fairly credible. (I hadn’t been aware either of the degree to which Trayvon’s family has cashed in on his death.)

It’s in court now, so discovery and depositions will be happening. The media cannot control it going forward.

    https://www.thecollegefix.com/academics-chide-article-on-quantum-computing-for-using-term-supremacy-its-for-racists/

  52. Maybe you should let the white supremists know that it was a joke, since they don’t know that. There are Nazi and white supremist symbols. The black sun rising was a Nazi symbol because Hitler practically banned religion and people were praying to the sun, since he attacked Catholic and Protestant churches for criticizing his racist policies.

Maybe the 88 signs are just from pianists, and not Nazis. Maybe 14 just means, yeah, made it past unlucky 13. There are many Nazis and white supremists in the real world and online. It is more common than people are willing to admit to.

The thing is that the more people try to repress it, the stronger the opposition becomes, very similar to Islamic State or Zionism.

“You’d have to be nuts and/or ignorant to let any man under your name go to the service academies.”

Do you include the Coast Guard Academy in this category?

By the way, the Coast Guard Academy has been under congressional criticism lately for not having sufficient diversity. But diverse applicants are very welcome to apply — those who are proficient in the water, and fully comfortable on small ships.

Nah, New London is going down the tubes as well.

As an example of branch specific requirements at the enlisted level, talk to any Coastie and they’ll tell you about blacks in water in boot camp, and the hull/engineering guys will also have stories about USS Buttercup.

    https://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=35330

Never mind the far easier swim requirements in basic.

Ofc these snowflakeulous days, if you arrive at Coast Guard wretchedly unable to swim or learn to, and keep failing, they are, I understand, now required by policy to supply endless special training for the rockfish in question.

Sadly the non-saltwater component of Cape May PT is way diluted for the broads.

    http://bootcamp4me.com/fitness-requirements/coast-guard-physical-fitness-assessment/

But my sense is that the extremely specialized units like rescue swimmers require such intense and specific physical capacities that they cannot be faked or counterfeited.

  64. So now gestures are “hate crimes”, too?

It appears that our “whiney and needy society” has reached terminal velocity. Going forward, only words, identities, and gestures approved by Frau Merkel and the Southern Poverty Law Center can be spoken, projected, or displayed. If you are white and heterosexual, be forewarned: inadvertent words, clothing, or gestures at the wrong place and at the wrong time and you could find yourself socially and economically ostracized and ruined for life. The punishments resemble what used to be reserved for felons convicted of serious crimes.

This all sounds a bit cliquish and adolescent to me. It’s the kind of stuff that young girls do in middle school and high school. It’s an effeminate form of bullying (i.e. “seeking to harm, intimidate, or coerce someone perceived as vulnerable through social sanctions”).

‘…the standard White Power”, but you can’t prove that’s what I mean, hur hur stunt…’

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve read today—and that’s after I checked out the achingly stupid Twitter feed.

At worst (or best, imo) one could reasonably find that the ‘OK’ sign was an act of defiance. But not in the way that simpletons like you describe. The real (and refreshing) defiance is towards a culture that continually redefines innocuous words and gestures as ‘racist’–not because the culture actually cares about racism–but because it is hell bent on delineating new boundaries of power. In this way, our woke culture is not some Racism Watchdog, but rather a mangy mutt capriciously pissing all over the neighborhood to let everyone to he ‘was here.’

At worst (or best imo) the kid was flipping the middle finger at the Establishment for concocting a stupid and arbitrary standard that the ‘OK’ sign is now racist.

Try this: Go watch ‘Scent of a Woman’. Idiots whining about the ‘OK’ sign as racist are like prep school’s headmaster (AKA The Establishment). The kids flashing ‘OK’ at the game are like ‘Colonel Frank’ (Al Pacino) and ‘Charlie’.

  73. From https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/circle-game/. (my bold)

“Playable anywhere, the Circle Game is initiated when one person makes a circle with their forefinger and thumb, resembling the OK gesture, and holds it below waist-level. If someone else makes eye contact with the circle, then the “circler” gets to punch them in the arm. Players especially enjoy the game in inappropriate situations, sometimes setting elaborate or creative traps for their target.

The origins of the Circle Game are disputed. People anecdotally recall playing the game in the schoolyard in the 1970–80s. Vice traced the game to one, Matthew Nelson, who claims credit for inventing it in New Bremen, Ohio in the early 1980s—though there’s no proof he either created or named the game. The TV show Malcolm in the Middle, which featured the game, helped popularize the Circle Game in the 2000s.

In the 2010s, references to the Circle Game have grown in popularity, often as an online meme, marking a new digital era of the schoolyard game. Its contemporary usage may be driven by millennial nostalgia (or an effort to capitalize on it) or simply by the possibilities the internet has opened up for the game.

Pictures of people making the circle with their hand, particularly as a way to photobomb an otherwise serious photograph, are often accompanied by the phrase got ‘em or simply gotem, meaning that the circling hand has “got” whoever is looking at it. Not surprisingly, the popularity of the Circle Game and “got ‘em” has been commercialized to sell t-shirts and coffee mugs.”

Somewhat off-topic but also somewhat related, recently some female college students at a CSU campus erected a sign outside their university housing that read:
“Q: Why is the weather like a vagina?
A: Once it’s wet, it’s time to come inside!”
The university administration came down hard on this bit of frivolity, issuing a proclamation that stated, in part:
“This contradicts and undermines the inclusive, consent-based, and survivor-centered culture we are working to co-create on campus. There is no reconciling this contradiction and there is no justification for sexist communication in our campus community.”
    Buzzkill.

Yes, but I think Spencer may have been joking regarding the hair being fake. I think his point was that Boris was a shill for his fellow Turks despite his hair.

Spencer is particularly hostile towards Turks. He went on a rant during a podcast earlier this year calling for the genocide of the Turks. This was several months before his secretly recorded rant got leaked by Milo.

Yeah, mega ultimate troll considering that people have been losing their livelihoods because of ginned up witch hunts over this.

Unless you're trying to accelerate (questionable if this even works for that) this kind of stuff just causes a lot of heartache for innocent people because the ADL/media has a direct line to every HR dept in the US and starts off by asking why they employ Nazis.

I’m not trying to do anything. I’m clarifying what it is and placing the blame where it belongs – on the vainglorious bigotry of those who are endangering those livelihoods and causing that heartache.

You’d do well to do likewise or they’ll be coming for more than our livelihoods. The public false positives raise awareness of the millions that have been going on in private for over a generation.

Some of you have probably been following this. George Zimmerman has filed a lawsuit against Trayvon Martin's parents, attorneys, and prosecutors alleging that they knowingly swapped in a fake witness for Trayvon's girlfriend (who allegedly didn't want to testify), the person Trayvon was speaking to on his cell phone. This fake witness was used as an "earwitness" to the incident. As you may remember, this bizarre, dumb, fat, ugly, unintelligible young woman could not read "cursive," even when the cursive in question was a letter she supposedly wrote herself (she later testified that she used an amanuensis for her written correspondence).

This information comes from a right-wing documentarian, who previously made a documentary claiming that President Obama's father was a different guy than the Kenyan guy. So he has been a little out there.

However, this time around he has a 2-hour documentary full of trial records, phone transcripts and tapes, and texts, as well as an expanded version in book form. He's put in a lot of shoe leather and the detective story presentation is gripping.

The mainstream media reporting is limited to (1) Loser Zimmerman is harassing Trayvon's grieving family, and (2) the lawsuit is connected to an alt-right conspiracy nut. The witness swap is not mentioned even to be rejected or ridiculed, I think because it is so lurid and shocking, and when looked into seems fairly credible. (I hadn't been aware either of the degree to which Trayvon's family has cashed in on his death.)

It's in court now, so discovery and depositions will be happening. The media cannot control it going forward.

I haven’t checked into this at all, but I can tell you that I heard this very same rumor from multiple friends in Florida at the time the trial was happening. So it’s not a new theory.

If we all keep cowering in front of them then we will deserve what happens when they come for us.

About 10 years ago we suffered from the peak effect of middle aged and elderly Congressmen, even a few military veterans (McCain) and a few weightlifters (little Paul Ryan) being basically feminized because they took too many estrogen pills to keep themselves from going bald.

Currently, going a little bald is seen as cool by the only people who matter, hot women, so we are in a better place than we were when McCain and Ryan were pretending to be something they were not.

This is one of those facts that historians of the future will either understand, and thereby understand why America was so fucked up pre-Trump, or will not understand, and will thereby be incompetent historians. And trust me, of all the things that are hard to predict, there is nothing harder to predict than this> will the historians of the future be competent or incompetent.

I had no idea that was a thing.

I noticed today my Sunday paper still carries Beetle Bailey. Somehow I doubt the material has been updated to accurately capture the diverse hilarity of our PC modern military.

My paper stopped carrying that comic 10 years ago. Is Beetle Baily still chopping up dead Teliban bodies? Is Sargent Snorkel still smoking pot? Is General Halftrack still raping women? I miss that comic strip.

    The black-power fist? It’s debatable;
Some pride in your race is relatable.

If it was updated, then it would be deemed “racist” by the woke tweety mob who would want the late Mort Walker to be dug from his grave, put on trial and then his remains thrown in the Potomac.

  100. it’s the circle game

Yeah, maybe, but probably not. The chances that they hadn’t heard about the “white power” meaning is close to zero. All the kids know about it. In which case, ‘cantcha take a joke?’ doesn’t cut it. It’s still an intended insult.

@bitfu That’s the dumbest thing I’ve read today—and that’s after I checked out the achingly stupid Twitter feed.

At worst (or best imo) the kid was flipping the middle finger at the Establishment for concocting a stupid and arbitrary standard that the ‘OK’ sign is now racist.

It has nothing to do with this. It’s not like claiming that “chairman” is now offensive to women. The ‘Establishment’ didn’t concoct an association with White Power. It was you mooks on 4-chan.

The whole “they weren’t flashing a White Power sign, but if they were, that’d be fine cos they’re just sticking it to The Man” isn’t very convincing.

Knock yourself out with the insults if you like, btw, but you’re wasting your time – doesn’t bother me. May as well stick to the issues, eh?

Since I am not a Nazi, a white supremist, or a 4Chan user, I do not know where or how the OK sign became a white supremist signal, but have read about it from white supremists not on 4Chan, but on other websites by white supremists who were not joking.

OK sign is used because the three extended finger form a K, as in KKK.

O.K. in language usage is actually an acronym for Old Kinderhook. Which is in New York, and was considered to mean from respectable lineage. The fluidity of language has changed this to mean alright.
