From ESPN, the sad news that key Trump Administration North Korean diplomat Dennis Rodman’s father has died:

Philander Rodman Jr., father of Dennis Rodman, dies at 79

Jul 16, 2020
Philip Matel

Philander Rodman Jr. died in Angeles City, Pampanga [near Manila in the Philippines] on July 14. He was 79. Jasmine Rodman, his granddaughter, made the announcement on her Facebook page. Philander Rodman Jr. is the father of Basketball Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman,

Philander Rodman Jr. stayed in the Philippines since coming as a member of the U.S. Air Force in the 1970s and had been estranged from his son for 42 years.

He established the Rodman’s Rainbow Obamaburger joint in the former U.S. military base, featuring burgers with red, yellow, and green colored buns and fries, colors his son used for his hair during his championship runs with the Chicago Bulls.

Philander and Dennis met after an exhibition game at the Mall of Asia Arena in 2012. The elder Rodman, who has acknowledged being a father to 29 offsprings by 16 mothers, first tried to meet his son in the Philippines in another game in 2006.

I’ve always imagined that Philander Rodman Sr. probably had quite a life story, too.

Philander Rodman ran off with another woman when Dennis was a child, and hasn't seen his famous son since. He says he's been in and out of jail, and left the U.S. Air Force under a cloud when he was accused of stealing military equipment. He runs a dingy bar called the Full House, and he has two Filipino wives, which he justifies because he says he's a Muslim. He has 27 children - the last born three weeks ago - "from four different wives and extracurricular activities," he boasts, swigging down a San Miguel beer.

"I understand Dennis's bitterness toward me," he said, explaining that his own father - Philander Rodman Sr. - abandoned him, leaving his family in Memphis to seek a better life up North.

A little about Sr. from a 1996 WaPo article
DAD AS HE WANTS TO BE

"I understand Dennis's bitterness towards me," he said, explaining that his own father -- Philander Rodman Sr. -- abandoned him, leaving his family in Memphis to seek a better life up North.

"He left my mother when I was 6 years old and went to Chicago," Philander Rodman said, recalling his own upbringing. "I used to hate my father. I thought he deserted us." Now, he said, he has come to appreciate the dilemma of black men in America who were unable to earn enough to care for their families, and who were under constant pressure at home to provide more.

"Later on, when I got married, Dennis's mother gave me such a . . . hard time, I understood it wasn't my daddy's fault," he said. He said that in 1968, he saw his father in Chicago and told him, "Dad, I used to hate you. But I got a wife like that right now, and I'm trying to get rid of her."

Even Tom Wolfe, who frequently gave his fictional characters names either vaguely redolent of...some personality trait (the Reverend Bacon, Peter Fallow), meant to draw some ludicrous comparison with an actual person, living or dead (Fareek Fanon) or faintly ridiculous (Raymond Peepgass), could never have come up with Philander Rodman, Jr. (Jr.!), sire of 29 children (twenty-nine! Imagine keeping track of all the birthdays!), by 16 different mothers (variety being the spice of life and all...).

Although, Wolfe being Wolfe, I like to think he would have tried to introduce such a character with his usual elan: "Young Philander learned his philosophy of life at the knee of his father, Philander, Sr., who read the Bible to the boy every night, though never quite getting past the passage in Genesis in which the Lord blessed Noah and his sons, telling them to 'be fruitful and multiply.'"

    Boom!

black sea wins the round and the iSteve commenting day with that one.

But for the record--in my experience--despite the nerd image, physics is not where to look for really collapsed fertility. Most of the professors i knew were typical "married with kids" guys. The norm would be wife and two kids, but several more fertile than that. Most of the guys i was in grad school with left with a wife--or to be wife--and went on to hatch normal broods. (Myself included.) Deciding to do physics is definitely an intellectual more introverted deal, but it also involves a certain amount of self-confidence and swagger. And is not a low status undertaking.

If you want to see real collapsed fertility, i think you need to look over at the gals in social sciences and humanities, the champion perhaps les "gender studies".

I think as a general rule education drags down female fertility, and only indirectly--through "educated" wives--male fertility. Education--useful education--enhances male earnings and makes them suitable matches so women desiring families manage to find them.

  24. What you don’t get from the article is that Angeles City in the 70’s was whore town, and probably in 2020 too. Mr. Rodman probably had all those children by prostitutes who wanted to cash in on an American with a name and stature. There wasn’t a better time be had anyplace in the world for a soldier or sailor on leave than you find in Angeles City. Angeles City was home to Clark Airbase, which was the largest US military base outside the US. There was probably many good reasons Mr. Rodman wished to live in the Philippines, and not return to USA. It’s a modern traditional occupation for Filipinos to service US Armed Forces personnel.

  25. Philander Rodman Jr. stayed in the Philippines since coming as a member of the U.S. Air Force in the 1970s

So what was his source of income that made him so desirable to these 16 Filipinas that they would let him boff them? My guess is some kind of service related disability check he got each month from the Air Force. Or perhaps Rodman put in his 20 years in the Air Force then retired with his pension. All the while playing Don Juan.

Now, Trump’s willingness to court the black community does go against Sailer’s election strategy of “Screw all other demographics, focus everything on appealing to whites and you’ll win,” but certain edge cases make me wonder about the absoluteness of this strategy.

If the Dems aren’t taking care of their base of minority voters—to the point of neglecting them—then it’s a strategically prudent move to siphon off votes from that demographic if it’s at low cost and if it’s not a zero-sum tradeoff with the white demographic.

Should Trump maintain his share of the white vote but also win, say, 20-25% (maybe even 33%) of the black vote, that presents a fundamental issue to the Democrats: they need to actually follow through with providing to their base. Which, in my view at least, they’ve shown they can’t actually do.

I don't think Steve's advice was to antagonize blacks - it was to at least stop antagonizing whites.

There is virtually no chance of those numbers. Trump's advantage lies with Black men but the Black electorate skews heavily female - and that's before you take into account the felon skew. Even if he gets 30 percent of the Black male vote, that would translate to 10-12 percent of overall Black vote. So better than typical Repub total but highly doubtful to swing any state his way.

In the early years of the republic(s), secretary of state, not the vice presidency, was seen as the natural stepping-stone to the presidency. This may be why Henry Clay, disqualified from the 1824 contingency election by finishing fourth (behind an invalid, no less), traded his pledged electors to JQ Adams for that position.

(Not that this is a "corrupt bargain". It's the normal state of affairs in any parliamentary coalition government. Suck it up, Andy. You lost, fair and square. Just like Hillary.)

Why Calhoun went for the vice presidency is interesting. He basically guaranteed his election by running on both tickets. There was no contingency process for him, as there was for the coalburner Richard M Johnson a few elections later.

Imagine keeping track of all the birthdays!), by 16 different mothers (variety being the spice of life and all…).

Although, Wolfe being Wolfe, I like to think he would have tried to introduce such a character with his usual elan: “Young Philander learned his philosophy of life at the knee of his father, Philander, Sr., who read the Bible to the boy every night, though never quite getting past the passage in Genesis in which the Lord blessed Noah and his sons, telling them to ‘be fruitful and multiply.’”

I don’t think Steve’s advice was to antagonize blacks – it was to at least stop antagonizing whites.

Trump is trying to thread both needles. He may pull it off, because who are angry whites going to vote for, Howie Hawkins?

(Not that this is a “corrupt bargain”. It’s the normal state of affairs in any parliamentary coalition government.

New headline from the WaPo: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/10/23/whats-happening-out-there-with-black-men-trump/ (not sure if this has been posted in other comments before).

Now, Trump's willingness to court the black community does go against Sailer's election strategy of "Screw all other demographics, focus everything on appealing to whites and you'll win," but certain edge cases make me wonder about the absoluteness of this strategy.

If the Dems aren't taking care of their base of minority voters—to the point of neglecting them—then it's a strategically prudent move to siphon off votes from that demographic if it's at low cost and if it's not a zero-sum tradeoff with the white demographic.

Should Trump maintain his share of the white vote but also win, say, 20-25% (maybe even 33%) of the black vote, that presents a fundamental issue to the Democrats: they need to actually follow through with providing to their base. Which, in my view at least, they've shown they can't actually do.

I guess we'll see with the outcome of this election.

Should Trump maintain his share of the white vote but also win, say, 20-25% (maybe even 33%) of the black vote, that presents a fundamental issue to the Democrats:

There is virtually no chance of those numbers. Trump’s advantage lies with Black men but the Black electorate skews heavily female – and that’s before you take into account the felon skew. Even if he gets 30 percent of the Black male vote, that would translate to 10-12 percent of overall Black vote. So better than typical Repub total but highly doubtful to swing any state his way.

Balderdash. Those children wouldn't have been aborted, they wouldn't have been conceived in the first place. Black illegitimacy was lower under the old abortionist bans than white illegitimacy is today under the shrine of Roe. If you want to lower the black population, forget the fetuses and just shoot the fertile women. It's more efficient.

You are right about Hefner, but he was hardly alone. There were plenty of Cold Spring acolytes, often Republican, Rockefeller types, who wanted it legal. Sometimes literal Rockefellers-- Gov. Nelson got it legalized in New York in 1970. When the legislature repealed it two years later, returning by default to the old regime (which was among the toughest of any state), Rocky flew in by private jet from out-of-state to make a public veto, i.e. to rub it in the voters' faces.

I stand corrected. I actually did the numbers on it a few years ago and remembered it was pretty bad but didn’t recall the exact amount. Of course some of the leaders have changed since then, and Britain has left the EU.

But my point still stands, in a way. The leaders of the European world, despite their apparent (or alleged) intelligence and social skills, have still managed to only rack up a sub-replacement fertility rate. Meanwhile the foreigners so many of them are happily ushering in are having 4-6-8 kids, and in shorter generations. But then I guess it’s a lot easier to raise a big family if you live in welfare and don’t feel obliged to go to work every day.

If it weren’t for abortion we’d have about a 35 to 40 percent black population in this country instead of 13 percent. Do you really really want that?

Balderdash. Those children wouldn’t have been aborted, they wouldn’t have been conceived in the first place. Black illegitimacy was lower under the old abortionist bans than white illegitimacy is today under the shrine of Roe. If you want to lower the black population, forget the fetuses and just shoot the fertile women. It’s more efficient.

You are right about Hefner, but he was hardly alone. There were plenty of Cold Spring acolytes, often Republican, Rockefeller types, who wanted it legal. Sometimes literal Rockefellers– Gov. Nelson got it legalized in New York in 1970. When the legislature repealed it two years later, returning by default to the old regime (which was among the toughest of any state), Rocky flew in by private jet from out-of-state to make a public veto, i.e. to rub it in the voters’ faces.
