Why Harvey Weinstein’s Guilt Matters to Black Women
The verdict enables more survivors of all backgrounds to share their truth, regardless of their identity of perpetrators.

In October 2017, I let out a big exhale when Harvey Weinstein became the target of accusations in the #MeToo movement and Roy Moore, Louis C.K., Matt Lauer and Garrison Keillor immediately became part of the growing list of those who allegedly sexually harassed women and girls. As a feminist activist, I celebrated the public shaming of these men. As a black woman who has survived sexual violence, I quietly applauded the new narrative on rape and race in America that I saw unfolding.
In the first weeks of #MeToo, the celebrities accused of sexual assault were white men, not African-American men. It would take two almost months after Ashley Judd’s sexual harassment accusation against Mr. Weinstein in The New York Times before the first high-profile black man was accused, when Jenny Lumet wrote in The Hollywood Reporter that Russell Simmons had sexually assaulted her.
Finally, media representation had caught up to reality. According to the most recent data released by the Justice Department in a special report on female victims of violence, white men committed more than 57 percent of sexual assaults from 2005 to 2010 in the United States.
To be precise, the government report reads:
Across all three periods, white males committed the majority of sexual violence. Over time, the percentage of sexual violence committed by white offenders declined from 70% in 1994-98 to 57% in 2005-10. The percentage of black offenders increased from 18% in 1994-98 to 27% in 2005-10. White males consistently accounted for more than 82% of the total U.S. male population and black males accounted for 11%. The NCVS did not collect information on the ethnicity of the offender. Therefore, Hispanic offenders make up an unknown portion of the white, black, and other race of offender categories.
So, black males were 27% of offenders in 2005-2010 and 11% of males. 27/11 = 2.45.
(Whites plus non-black Hispanics) were 57% of offenders and 82% of males = 0.70.
2.45/0.70 = 3.5.
So, the black male rate of sexual violence offendership according to this report was 3.5 times the (white male plus non-black Hispanic male) rate.
UPDATE: the above calculation was just for the most recent time period, 2005-2010, in the report. That’s the time period Dr. Tillet used. But, because I like looking at more data rather than less data, let me redo it using all three time periods 1994-2010.
This calculation will weight by the length of the time periods. It assumes the sexual violence rates were the same in each year, so a period with 6 years in it gets 6/5ths the weight of one with 5 years in it.)

So, that reduces the Black rate relative to the White/Hispanic rate from 3.5X in 2005-2010 to 2.9X in 1994-2010. Notice that there is a lot of unexplained volatility in the other 3 groups besides Whites&Hispanics and Blacks.
Back to the NYT:
This shift in our national consciousness also chiseled away at one of our nation’s most pernicious and enduring racial stereotypes: the black male rapist. This myth, born in the 19th century, worked to prohibit consensual sexual liaisons between white women and black men on one hand, and was used to justify the widespread lynching of black men on the other hand, by white mobs who falsely asserted their black male victims raped white women.
As that stereotype took hold, it destroyed the lives of black men and their families, and it had another chilling effect: It discouraged all women from coming forward with allegations against white men. And the stereotype of the black male rapist has intimidated black women who were assaulted by African-American men into silence out of fear of being labeled race traitors or, worse yet, of being seen as complicit with a criminal justice system that disproportionately incarcerated black men.
Before Mr. Weinstein’s conviction on Monday, many black women assaulted by African-American men have had to make a difficult choice: suffer quietly or seek justice by appearing to collude with a racist system.
In December, the rapper 50 Cent said as much to Oprah Winfrey when he blasted her in an Instagram post. “I don’t understand why Oprah is going after black men,” he wrote. “No Harvey Weinstein, No Epstein, just Michael Jackson and Russell Simmons.” By then, Ms. Winfrey had already given a rousing Golden Globes speech in 2018 endorsing #MeToo and Times Up!, an organization founded by celebrities that grew in response to the Weinstein effect. Over the years, she had hosted more than 200 episodes on the topic of sexual assault on her daytime talk show, the bulk of which showcased white men as perpetrators.
Nevertheless, 50 Cent’s comments rang true for some who had witnessed another pattern over the last two decades: The most famous men arrested in the United States for sexual assault in the years before the #MeToo era, including Kobe Bryant, Bill Cosby, R. Kelly, Michael Jackson, were black, notwithstanding the sexual assault accusations against the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger around 2009 and the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, in 2011.
Such racial consistency gave cover to white men, who, according to the historian Estelle Freedman in her book “Redefining Rape,” historically “decided the terms and beneficiaries of U.S. citizenship” and also shaped rape laws that “contributed to the immunities enjoyed by white men who seduced, harassed or assaulted women of any race.” By doing so, she concluded, they reinforced their own “sexual privileges,” a legacy that lives on today.
Thanks goodness the Harvey Weinstein scandal has totally shattered all the old stereotypes!

In the plain light of the facts, white men do not rape black women. Make of it what you will.

Does she care about the details of any of these cases? R. Kelly and Michael Jackson were accused of going after children. Bill Cosby was accused of a long history of drugging women. Bryant and Roethlisberger were one incident accusations and both determined to be consensual. Is her omission of the obviously guilty Roman Polanski intentional or not?

He made a full confession in writing that he grabbed and forced her and made her substantial compensation. She took the money and dropped the charges. He admitted guilt. And you shouldn’t go throwing around terms like “determined “ which is not a legal term either criminal or civil you moron. If you want to defend black rapists, at least learn some legal terms.

Weinstein maybe a sleazy pig of a man who used his wealth and power to lure ( younger) women into his hotel rooms but if he is a ‘rapist’ than Kobe Bryant must be as well. The truth is not ONE of Weinstein’s so called victims did what a woman could have done to fend him off. A menacing warning that she would call police or his wife or, in extremis, scratch, bite and kick. There’s a reason police look for physical evidence of a struggle in rape cases and its the reason the story of Haven Monahan fell apart.
While brandishing a weapon can make women submit to a rapist’s demands even more effectively than climbing aboard her no one accused either Weinstein ( or Kobe) of going that far.
Instead of defending Hideous Harvey why not get the transcript and read the judge’s explanation of the specific laws he violated, the evidence and testimony.
Then you can argue the women weren’t raped from knowledge of the facts and laws. Maybe you could try physically resisting a 6’6 basketball player or 300 pounds of blubber.

Back during the Duke Lacrosse incident (2006) of an alleged gang rape of a stripper, I was a frequent visitor to the website “Durham in Wonderland” authored by Brooklyn College professor KC Johnson. Johnson, by politics, is an old fashion liberal–not a conservative.

It’s a black thang. They do rape a lot of black women and their own sisters daughters aunts and relatives. The black women don’t report it much. It’s partly don’t snitch. 1.) Are you asserting that we should not “believe women” if they are white women accusing black men of rape?
2.) Are you asserting that every single one of the black men lynched for raping white women was innocent? Were some of them actually guilty of raping white women? What percentage? Were the mobs justified in their anger in the cases where black men actually raped white women? If a black mob killed a white man for raping a black woman, would that be a horrible case of bigotry?
Anyway, now that you know that black men commit rape at 3.5 times the rate of white men, will you write a follow up essay with some solutions that might bring true equity to this area of our culture?

So that’s the explanation, isn’t it? For 30 years this guy lives the (((movie mogul’s))) dream; he not only gets away with it, but gets rewarded for it. Keeps it up in plain sight. The conviction rate is around 93%, which is probably no better the odds of getting caught trying to hide. Hopeless. One of the scams is being able to charge someone with a gazillion related crimes knowing full well that the hapless jury who isn't convinced with find a "compromise."
I want scumbags like Weinstein who sickeningly abuse their power removed from their positions (through civil suits and pressure) and ostracized from society, but I would prefer the criminal justice system focus on real rapists, not quasi-prostitutes who become retroactive rape victims.

Cannot help but notice how many TV ads feature a couple a white guy with black girl. The show “Ray Donovan” featured a degenerate patriarch played by Trump pal Jon Voight as an old Southie Irish hood who is a big fan of black ladies. Would wager a small fortune statistically that combination is the least likely cross racial coupling.
Last I looked, interracial couplings (I believe tabulated by marriage) were 90% BM/WF-to-10% WM/BF.
Anywhere you look on TV--including something I watched last night--has a WM married to or paired up with a BF. Extremely sill portrayal.

One thing that did not help Weinstein was he kept hiring and firing attorneys until he got ones who agreed with him. He did not listen to sensible advice. Ben Branfman is a old time NY attorney and Jose Baez represented Casey Anthony and Aaron Hernandez.Weinstein hired and fired both of them, along with a battalion of others. And eventually wound up with unwieldy mish mash of lawyers who while good in their own right weren’t really on the same page with each other. May be had he stuck with one attorney and listened, at least he might not be going to jail for very long, if at all.
If I was e.g., a rich rapper who shot up a nightclub with my homeys and killed someone, I would definitely hire him to defend.

The civil respondent/defendant or in criminal cases the defendant makes a motion to dismiss the case because the plaintiff prosecutor has no evidence therefore the case should be dismissed.
Then the prosecutor presents all the evidence. Defendant was given all the evidence well before the preliminary hearing . Defense argues against the evidence. Doesn’t just ask the case be dismissed.
Judge considers all the evidence. Judge either dismissed the case or allows the case to continue. Remember, the prosecutor has presented all the evidence. The defense was given al the evidence well before. The defense argues against the evidence.
Judge decides to dismiss or go forward.
It’s really a trial without the jury. If the prosecution wins the prelim on the evidence there’s an excellent chance the prosecution will win the jury trial because a preliminary judge has already been convinced by the same evidence.
If the evidence was good reason for acquittal, the case would be dismissed at the prelim. The jury trial is more or less a repeat of the evidence presented at preliminary hearing.
It’s not the trial itself that convicts. It’s the evidence presented at the prelim. That’s why the percentage of conviction of at least one charge is so high.
Plus, they’re guilty.
It doesn’t sound like Ms. Tillet is very good at maff.
I’m sure Harvey’s fantasy was yellow women. Same for Epstein. We know it was for Bob Kraft (he privately said so even though he only married and dated Jewish women). So, why is it white and black but rarely yellow women who’re victims of these perverts?
2. Because of Asian women's overconcentration in the upper middle class and higher, they probably tend to wind up in the 'wife' category. (See: the emperor of Facebook.) It's not as if white gentile women *don't* wind up in the 'wife' category (look at intermarriage rates), but as they are distributed through all social levels they also wind up in the 'pump and dump' category. The question was really whether these women were semi-hooker/actresses who were willing to have sex with Weinstein to enhance their putative careers in movies, or whether they really were victims of sexual assaults.
The jury heard the evidence and decide that they were in fact rape victims and not vindictive scheming whores in search of a last payday. The jury probably believed that they were not good enough actresses to be faking their stories.

Now the attention seems to have switched to Placido Domingo. Both of these men seem to have used their fame and wealth to obtain a lot of sex in exchange for favors, and this probably led them to believe that they were more desirable to women than they really were, perhaps because there must have been some attractive women coming on to them because they had heard that this was a good way to get ahead.
When I worked at a prison a senior management guy was fired for sexual harassment, and yet he was a VERY good looking, intelligent, and charming guy of whom one would proverbially say he could have any woman he wanted. My recollection is that the data point in question referred to multi-perpetrator rapes, not all rapes, and that what the tables issued by the Bureau of Justice Statistics said was that there were so few cases they could not report valid data.

The Census Bureau has this antique data table (https://www.census.gov/population/socdemo/race/interractab1.txt) which indicates that as of 1991/92 about two-thirds of black-white couples consisted of a black male / white female and that 1/3 were the converse. Not sure if they’ve collected this datum in the years since.

Most popular rappers arent even strongly tied to any major companies or labels and the most of the casting couch rumors (not saying to it never happens) claims come from jealousy and resentment from the masses.
