From the New York Times:
Where Did All the Black Teachers Go?
Editorial Observer
By BRENT STAPLES APRIL 20, 2017… States and localities with significant black populations are beginning to recognize the whiteness of the teacher corps as an obstacle to student achievement. At the same time, statistics show that districts are doing a miserable job of retaining teachers of color and that more leave the field each year than enter it. A 2016 report by the Education Trust shows why. Among other things, African-Americans interested in teaching black students find they are steered into positions where they teach only black students. The same teachers complain of being pigeonholed as disciplinarians, their other talents rendered invisible.
In the NYT, use of the word “whiteness” correlates highly with anti-white attitudes and anti-white initiatives. The word “whiteness” in the NYT is more or less intended as a racial slur.

“States and localities with significant black populations are beginning to recognize the whiteness of the teacher corps as an obstacle to student achievement. ”
“Among other things, African-Americans interested in teaching black students find they are steered into positions where they teach only black students. ”
Am I missing something, or is there a contradiction here?
Didn’t you blog about another op/ed where someone claimed black students need black teachers? And now Staples says black teachers resent being steered to teach black students?

People go into teaching assuming they will be tapped to teach the happy, shining people.

They went for much better jobs. A black who can become a teacher can reasonably aim much higher now.
Whites and Asians are also much more likely to value the teaching schedule bc most are married with kids and there are many teacher couples or teacher/professor type couples. People in this situation are much less likely to leave teaching.
Lastly, financial stability pays a big role. $80k (our city schools avg for mid career people) is not crazy money, but if you are responsible it should be easy to get by and save money. In the fifties and the sixties the theory was that we needed to acculturate blacks by letting them interact with the whites from the dominant culture. I was a public social worker for a couple years in the San Francisco of the sixties.
The official liberal dogma at the time was that blacks had been separated from mainstream society and that was why they were so backward. Lots of nice white girls just out of college would go to a poor black home and show them a better way to live. Or at least that was the theory.
Home visits from your white social worker didn't seem to work so they were cut out. Similarly black school achievement was supposedly improved when black kids were around whites. That after all was the theory behind bussing. But we couldn't just cut out all teaching to blacks - could we?
But switching the teachers from black to white - as was done with school integration - didn't work. Black students still did poorly. And then later when we switched from white teachers back to black that didn't work either. No teachers of any color can make black kids learn as well as white or Asian kids.
So far no one has a method by which blacks learn as well as whites - but as long as their is lots of tax money available - someone will propose a new theory.Replies: @Daniel Chieh

OT from Paris, France
The reasons, that continually renew themselves and which in November 2015 led to the declaration of the state of emergency about all of France, which was prolonged only three months after for an indefinite time, have, as it looks today in Paris on the Champs Elysées, renewed themselves again: One suspect shot dead, one policemen killed, two severely wounded.
This happened, after a terrorist attack on presidential candidate Fillon could be neutalized in the last moment – almost exactly what has happened in the case of a planned attack on an unnamed candidate for the French presidential elections in Nizza, as the French public was informed on a press conference held by government officials on Tuesday.
All these events seem to have an Islamic background.
“We have in France about hundred quarters, that resemble (Bruxelles islamic terroist hideaway, DK) Molenbeek”, said French Secretary for Urban Development, Patrick Kanner, in April 2016.

Shouting, Correct, until they are actually confronted with all the problems that come with trying to teach black students. Then they bail.
Always a new excuse – one group of progressives says blacks need black teachers, another says they need to be in white-majority schools, another says they need to have an Afro-centric curriculum to keep them engaged, yet another says you can’t expect blacks to sit still, be quiet or speak correctly because it’s not their culture.
It all adds up to the left admitting one way or another that they are totally baffled about what to do with the most troubled part of their base after years of promising this or that solution will turn everything around – but it never does. So naturally it must be blamed on a different group in society or phenomena like “privilege” because the left sincerely believes that of all the people on Earth who have ever faced obstacles to freedom or success, American blacks are uniquely incapable of helping themselves.

Sean, I won’t disagree but teaching isn’t a bad job once you’ve established yourself. Very good pay for 184 7 hour days. Usually great benefits with little contribution from the teacher and a nice retirement package. Not true in all the states of course but usually true in the northeast, especially NY.
They have money to sponsor political candidates. They do not care about education, regardless of race. They are pimps, the recipients of their largesse are whores.
Yet another example of the goodthinkers’ complete conditioning at this late stage rendering them incapable of even thinking certain things; in this case, the headline and their concern should be why aren’t blacks proving capable and willing teachers? This plays out over and over again, particularly with blacks but also the other major minorities and women, where mediocrity, failure or simple lack of interest in a field (as we’ve seen they’re even coming after hobbies) on the part of presumed victims is deemed a priori evidence of bias that can only be corrected with more laws, programs; everything is rammed into the Narrate 0 Matic and comes out gravy for the activist class.

I teach in a school that is 2/3 black and the teaching staff is 75% white and Asian (mostly Indian or Filipino). This is not unusual in our district. As others have surmised, affirmative action has played a part. Much easier to become an administrator or work at the district office if you’re black. Also much easier to get into grad school after your TFA time is up. Test scores and grades that would be wholly noncompetitive for whites it Asians will get you into U of Maryland or better.

Schools that are overturning black and have mostly or only black teachers are generally not good places to work and often reflect and administration that is not objective in teacher evaluation (which matters in cities like mine that base pay on formal observation scores by administrators).

Some of my classes (the tougher ones) seem to value blackness/black culture over virtually anything else in life. Many of my black students have never gone far outside their own part of the city. They listen primarily to Baltimore rappers. Their media of choice is social media, not tv–things going on outside their immediate vicinity barely register with them. They tend to be very homophobic and racist against non-AAs including Caribbean and African immigrants (we have a significant % of both and they tend to be excellent students and athletes).
My non black students seen to value teaching ability very highly and not care much about race in a teacher.

The dueling groups may represent a stage (denial?, bargaining, etc) in the Kubler-Ross 5-Step cycle. That might be an endgame, although they have teased us before and then gone off on other tangents.
The whiteness of the teaching corps at a certain school is well known within any district. It translates to competence being valued. Black teachers will vouch for this in private, even if publicly they not along at articles like the current example.
Schools that are overturning black and have mostly or only black teachers are generally not good places to work and often reflect and administration that is not objective in teacher evaluation (which matters in cities like mine that base pay on formal observation scores by administrators).
The problem for many black teachers teaching black students is the constant daily reminder of why, when a black teacher hails a cab, the cabs pass him/her by. Being around the students daily contradicts their semi-religious inner narrative identifying cab drivers as irrational, and bigoted, while introducing the reality that the cab drivers are only trying to avoid violence and/or loss of income from the overrepresented savage class of blacks, who so predominate black culture:
https://www.liveleak.com/view?i=5fe_1492728031
If you were a generally intelligent, goal-oriented black person, would you want to be reminded on a daily basis that no matter how hard you work, no matter how hard you try, you’ll always be followed around in expensive department stores till the day you die, thanks to the culture of the aimless, brainless louts sitting before you in your classroom?
That’s got to be, at least depressing, if not emotionally disorienting.
Teacher’s working with black students are at risk for PTSD, just like the police, and the results sometimes aren’t very pretty.
Praxis tests are a big barrier to black teachers. There are few black secondary science or math teachers in my city but many black elementary, English, and SS teachers. ETS would probably not release the figures by race (??) but I imagine the pass rates on chemistry and physics (required subjects in MD HS) are very low for blacks. Biology is easier but I still very the black pass rate is pretty low.
Le Pen’s luck.
Teacher tests have been made harder over the last 20 years or so, which is why public school teacher ranks are still so white. A lot of people would like to start World War Teacher to take the jobs of the nice white lady teachers, but they haven’t quite figured out the right tactics. But you can see the momentum gathering with this one study about how black youths do better with black teachers. (I don’t know if it has been replicated or not.)
Alienate the NWLs and say hello to swing state Illinois, and permanent GOP rule in the Midwest.
I suspect a little of the subtext here (as with ‘Waiting for Superman’ a while ago) is that given the general decline of the economy, at least below the 90th percentile or so, safe but moderate-paying jobs like education tend to become more desirable. So you’re going to see articles like this so minorities get their share of the teacher slots, just like feminists started attacking tech when they realized one of the few booming industries had very few women in it.
If I can disentangle……
1: We need more black teachers, because black kids won’t learn from non-blacks
2: Black teachers are relatively rare, and hate having to deal with black kids
3: White teachers know they can’t punish black kids without holy racism hell being raised, so they try to get the black teachers to do all the dirty work of discipline.
4: Clearly, black kids need no discipline, so this is racist.
Really, there’s only one solution. All public schoolteachers have to be black.

Have you seen much evidence of a drift into an oral culture, where literacy and numeracy seem to be in danger of fading away? Yes, the ability to read and think critically, especially when it involves data or concepts such as quantities of time or percentages, is nearly zero in the most isolated AA students. The very idea that these skills relate to “real life” is lost on them. Many (nearly all) of their parents think they should pass just for showing up.
Likewise, the idea that a mere 10-20 miles up I-95 there are **entire schools** filled with students who can compare prokaryotes and eukaryotes or find the molecular mass of C2H6 is unreal to them.

A few years ago a NYC public school teacher called the Suze Orman show to ask if she could afford a lakeside condo in upstate NY. It seems that the woman was about to retire at age 60, and her Social Security would not kick in for another 6 years, so her income after retirement would therefore drop temporarily to her $108k a year pension, and she didn’t think she could maintain her lifestyle in the Big Apple on that kind of money.

And a lot of black people want exactly that.
World War Teacher will be excellent. First, firing every single one of the Nice White Lady teachers in favor of Dontavious and Shaniqua and Shitavious is a good thing. Nothing radicalizes someone more than losing money, noted Machiavelli. A Nice White Lady teacher fired so that DBrickashaw can take her job is a brand new radical member of the Alt-Right.
Second, what’s public school when EVERY TEACHER IS BLACK? Yep its a WorldStarHipHop video every single second, and will be as attractive to parents of White kids as a trip to Compton or Chicago’s South Side. White support for public education will go to ZERO, and they will flee to either homeschooling or Religious Education that is private. Either way, Democrats/Aristocrats (same thing) lose a huge base, by going all Black. They don’t gain any marginal Black supporters who would otherwise stay home or vote Republican (that’s a function of walking around money at election time). And they lose all those nice White Lady teachers.
Then there will be huge efforts by the White middle and working, and fired Nice White Lady teachers, and large portions of the lesser Nobility to simply erase public schooling. Since it will be a drain on them and fights over money are always more vicious and lasting. Aristo Dems have traded on the everyone in the party bit of public education, but when its all Black all the Time, it will have the same pulling power as WorldStar.

Steve, how can you stand to read all of these mind-numbing articles about the unbearable whiteness of everything? Slogging through this tripe would drive me nuts.
The Nice White Ladies were the tip of the spear stabbing the rest of us in the back.
This skill send to be lacking in the black teachers--always buying new cars, new electronics, mortgaged to the hilt, child support, etc. But 2 teachers making $160k with fully paid HC and pension isn't bad for 40 weeks in the classroom each yr.Replies: @Father O'Hara, @David Davenport, @Anonymous
Is that the East Coast norm? In California, Jerry Brown increased the employees/members contributions for pension to 10.25% from 8% a few years back. The employee contribution to HC in term of premium/co-pay had also being raised with each new contracts in most districts.

Two of my best grade school teachers were black. Neither of them talked about blackety-black either.
My worst grade school teacher was also black. She did talk about blackety-black all day. Weird coincidence, I know. In spite of her terrible teaching, her class was an informative window into the paranoia, scapegoating, counter-logic and general dysfunction of contemporary black culture. It was also a lesson in the odd way that my black classmates, most of whom I had known most of my life to be largely indifferent to race questions, would suddenly and unapologetically line up to man the race barricades when this teacher blew her blackety-black horn.
Being a highly visible minority in a majority black neighborhood, this had certain, um … implications, not entirely lost on my grade school mind.
Retired NYC teachers withdraw money from their tax deferred 403(b) free of state and city taxes. They are also guaranteed a fixed rate of 7 percent in their 403(b). Principals are guaranteed a 8.25 percent return. Also, their health and drug insurance is fully paid for and they get reimbursed for Medicare Part B premiums and for Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA) on their Medicare Part B.
Utopia.
To what sorts of schools do black teachers send their own children?
Yes, obviously, the Jewish teachers would then lose their jobs. Don’t you understand they are classified as white according to all government criteria?
And this isn’t just some theoretical possibility. Mass purges of white teachers by black activists has happened and the first significant instance was almost 50 years ago:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_teachers%27_strike_of_1968
Are blacks leaving the classroom, but not the schools? In my anecdotal experience, black teachers are much more interested in climbing the bureaucratic ladder than white teachers. They angle for jobs as Counselors, Assistant Principals and Principals with a political zeal that is amazing. Teaching gets to be a drag after a few years for most of them, and they see the perks the administrative class gets. Part of the reason failing school systems are so top-heavy with bureaucrats is that nobody wants to ride herd on students; they all want to ride herd on young white teachers.

Alfa, I refuse to sit with my cousin and his wife at any family functions. She is an active BPS teacher, he is a retired BPS teacher. They complain constantly about finances. She makes a paltry $84K teaching art, he collects his full pension and teaches to ESL students part time at $75 p/hr. They live in a lake front home and summer in Europe. I have a friend who was a BPS teacher. He went into consulting and has done extremely well. He is embarrassed by his friends that are still teachers, their constant complaining about pay is unbearable.

The bigger the city, the bigger the pay and pension. I don’t know how long it can be sustained. One of my wife’s colleagues’s was married to a worker for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. He retired on a typical pension for workers at that utility, $10k per month. The DWP routinely raises water rates by 10% to 20% at a shot. When citizens complain, the governing commission has implicitly said they don’t care, their responsibility is to the union members, not the public, and there is nothing you can do about it because in effect they pick who gets to hold public office and appoint them to the board.

Focus on what we can control in our country.Replies: @Dieter Kief
I look upon such phenomenons as the one I described above in France right now as huge scale social experminents, which nobody could pay to set up – not even if a really rich university would share the cost and sell the publishing rights to Hollywood or something like this – uhh – but you can sort of read/decipher them (those big scale social experiments) and draw conclusions from them – and maybe learn from them – practically for free. And I do think we still can learn from them.
Plus – I, as a German may I add, love France – not only Montaingne and Chamfort, Diderot, Chopin, Molière (sigh – his play Le Malade Imaginaire (The Imaginary Invalid)) is one of the … best plays ever! – it should be taught in medical school, including the fact, that Molière wrote it, when being terminally ill – and died on stage, playing (!) the Imaginary Invalid – now, I mean: That’s the best combination of humor and wisdom and artist’s courage I’ve ever come across!). Ok, then there are the photographers Ronis and Atget and painters Renoir and Corot and…I love to visit France. The rural south – – – the Cévennes, the Massif Céntral – bikers heaven, really. Burgundy. The Loire. The French Jura. And that is all until now pretty much intact. And the shere beauty of it… The north is good too, but cities like Lille start to get frightening. No go areas, where the locals urge you to walk around – in bright daylight. And areas with pretty poor white folks, which have lost all their charme.
Weren't we told that only black teachers can teach black kids?Replies: @Buffalo Joe, @Baltimore teacher, @Pat Boyle
The idea that only blacks can teach blacks is a ‘just so’ story. It is an explanation crafted after the fact.
Home visits from your white social worker didn’t seem to work so they were cut out. Similarly black school achievement was supposedly improved when black kids were around whites. That after all was the theory behind bussing. But we couldn’t just cut out all teaching to blacks – could we?
But switching the teachers from black to white – as was done with school integration – didn’t work. Black students still did poorly. And then later when we switched from white teachers back to black that didn’t work either. No teachers of any color can make black kids learn as well as white or Asian kids.
So far no one has a method by which blacks learn as well as whites – but as long as their is lots of tax money available – someone will propose a new theory.
The Democrats would find it much harder to win without the financial and organizational muscle of the teachers union. The left worldwide has known this ever since Jules Ferry seized control of the schools from the Church.
Alienate the NWLs and say hello to swing state Illinois, and permanent GOP rule in the Midwest.

This is a great industry, solving it would just ruin the potential for future profits.
The conversation with a school teacher eventually (as a sort of Murphy’s Law) turns to their pay and benefits as poor, as compared to some other school district or what they would receive in the private sector. The unrealistic expectations and/or terms can be counted on to be uninformed, with a misunderstanding of what the cost of their benefits and pension compensation actually amounts to–especially as compared to the private sector.
It is impossible to think of any private sector middle class/middle income occupation where retirement before age 65 is possible, without inherited wealth or reliance on a second source of income (or substantial personal savings), yet retirement after 30 years teaching is an expectation.

It may have been an honest plea but it has had the consequence of bait n switch–so, in fact “the only question” doesn’t matter. Results, not intentions, are all that matter.
We all know what the road to hell with paved with…
California is probably a little ahead of the curve regarding employee contributions because their fiscal situation (ex-Illinois and NJ) is worse than everywhere else. IIRC, NY teachers contribute small amounts, though probably calculated in $ per check rather than % of annual pay.
Steve, they will push out the Nice Old White Lady Teachers (NOWLT) by making the classrooms an absolute hellhole of physical and verbal abuse. You already see countless stories and studies on how black students are “over” disciplined and suspended from school. As soon as the classroom becomes a MMA Octagon, the battered NOWLTs will flee or take an early pension. Young white girls will be steered away from teaching. The reason: powerful teachers’ unions find that blacks are easy to lead, even when you give them positions of importance , not actual power. They become a controllable voting bloc. The leaders of the national teachers union get great paychecks and have disproportionate power in politics. “But it’s for the children” is a mighty sledge hammer.
Daniel.. . . Almost in need of a RICO investigation. The national teachers unions have probably done more damage to America than organized crime. Yeah, I know that’s hyperbole, but consider how much damage has been done to this country by liberal education policies. I will humbly take criticism on this point.

Alfa, It can’t be sustained. The American cities that have filed for bankruptcy did so because of unfunded pension liabilities, which in Chicago’s case is $10BILLION and climbing. Teachers talk about their long hours but they now have the omnipresent aides that watch the classroom while the teacher grades papers and updates the lesson plan. Teachers’ aides are another reason school budgets are so high. Check out the teachers’ parking lot after the last bell, pretty empty. Teacher union contracts mandate the work schedule and the hours, so your teacher friends are blowing smoke. Buffalo Public School teachers average 18 days of absence from the class room, that is three weeks plus! What other industry would allow you to be absent that much and still retain your job! Reason is: substitute teaching is another lucrative segment of teaching. Otherwise, we’re good.
Barnard, Do you know what a Mobius band is? That is the apt description of the American educational system, an never ending loop.
It all adds up to the left admitting one way or another that they are totally baffled about what to do with the most troubled part of their base after years of promising this or that solution will turn everything around - but it never does. So naturally it must be blamed on a different group in society or phenomena like "privilege" because the left sincerely believes that of all the people on Earth who have ever faced obstacles to freedom or success, American blacks are uniquely incapable of helping themselves.Replies: @Ivy, @Father O'Hara, @Buffalo Joe

Second, what's public school when EVERY TEACHER IS BLACK? Yep its a WorldStarHipHop video every single second, and will be as attractive to parents of White kids as a trip to Compton or Chicago's South Side. White support for public education will go to ZERO, and they will flee to either homeschooling or Religious Education that is private. Either way, Democrats/Aristocrats (same thing) lose a huge base, by going all Black. They don't gain any marginal Black supporters who would otherwise stay home or vote Republican (that's a function of walking around money at election time). And they lose all those nice White Lady teachers.
Then there will be huge efforts by the White middle and working, and fired Nice White Lady teachers, and large portions of the lesser Nobility to simply erase public schooling. res, Harvard offers a doctorate in Urban Education to train black school superintendents. Black school superintendents are the best scam going. Quit or get fired, take your severance package and move on to the next job. Buffalo’s new school superintendent,Kriener Cash, took the job, but just rented a house, he said he wasn’t here to put down roots and he didn’t want the hassle of selling a house if the board terminated him or he quit. The sup before him, Dr. Pamela Brown, Harvard Phd.(see above), was hired at $240K and was so unqualified that the school board hired a mentor to train her. The mentor was a black woman who hired two more black woman mentors to help her train Dr. Brown. The majority black school board was on recorded as saying they wanted a sup that resembled the majority of the students, you know, black for black.
Yep. Even here - my 90% White county (voted 65% for Trump) just hired a black school superintendent at $250K.
Another somewhat scam is that cities nationwide are all trying to hire a black (or female) police chief.
The number of Jews in Ivies has been vastly overestimated. Regardless, they are not competing for teaching jobs. The 5% or so of Jews that are elites (and maybe 1% of White non-Jews) are doing better than ever. That does absolutely nothing for the rest of us.
A lot of black people hate it when they start at a new job and suddenly get promoted to Vice President of Black Stuff.
And a lot of black people want exactly that.
In 1987, a couple of years out of undergrad w/ my BS Computer Science, I wanted to escape the New England winters and, almost on a lark, sent in my resume to the Miami-Dade County School District. Within two weeks, I was being interviewed at their Biscayne Blvd., Miami headquarters and, even though I never spent once second in front of a classroom, before lunchtime I had a job offer to teach math at the same salary as my software job back home. I ended up backing out but, to think, if I had taken that job (and lasted), this year would have made my 30th year and full retirement in my early 50s at probably about $50K annual lifetime pension plus annual COLA.

Joe- I’m a high school teacher.I feel I’m well compensated for what I do. The kids I teach however , are mostly interested in what I have to offer. Teaching at a ghetto school where none of the kids, or nearly none of the kids, have any interest in anything remotely academic it’s just a sucky job. There is no amount of money that would convince me to teach in such a school.
E- my question would be, would you have lasted? My presumption is that since you read and comment on this site you’re no dummy. Being ” not a dummy” is a requirement for teaching high school, but is not sufficient. You have to be able to control the classroom, which in some ways I think, is like speed in athletics . You either have it or you don’t. One can get faster, but one cannot become fast. Similarly if you’re not someone who can control a classroom to begin with you can get better at it, but probably never will be great at it. BTW any mistakes in this are due to my dictating while I’m watching the Bruins game.
