Black Hebrew Israelites are a crackpot hate group that has been around, in one form or another, for a long time. A few thousand, for example, got into Israel. They live in Dimona, Israel, down by the nuclear bomb factory.

But now they are getting Strange New Respect for their role in helping set off the media’s Two-Days Hate against that smiling white Catholic boy.

iSteve commenter RDoughnut observes:

Steve, check out this NYT article…

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/23/us/black-hebrew-israelites-covington-catholic.html

“Though they have been name-checked by Kendrick Lamar in a rap called “Yah,” they have also been denounced by others as a hate group”

-so name- checking is some form of moral absolution

By Kendrick Lamar, who seems to be some kind of rapping saint/genius to the press.

“adherents contend that race does not exist, and so they eschew being referred to as black or categorizing anyone else by race. They group people instead based on what they call nations, believing that there are 12 tribes among God’s chosen people. White people are not among those tribes, they believe, and will therefore be servants when Christ returns to Earth.”

-Race doesn’t exist, they don’t categorize by race, but Whites must be servants

Who cares what James D. Watson and David Reich say about race existing? The Black Hebrew Israelites say race doesn’t exist, so checkmate, unscientific racists!

Also, whites are subhuman.

“If their interaction with the Catholic students seemed like an expression of bigotry toward white people, some of their most vile language is reserved for black people in the communities where they preach.”

-“seemed”, ok.

“They argue that the best response to the evils of government is to separate and form their own institutions, Ms. Beirich said.

That is not necessarily a radical idea for many black people. But Ms. Beirich said that groups like Hebrew Israelites were also anti-gay, anti-white and anti-Semitic.”

-good to know.

Obama writes in Dreams From My Father about how he had been extremely sympathetic to Minister Farrakhan’s capitalist black nationalism — e.g., blacks should only buy toothpaste from black firms — until he realized there just wasn’t enough money in it. It was much more profitable to extract money from whites.

The quality of journalism is rapidly declining. For how long will legacy institutions hold up maintain their status?

We shouldn't be relying on the $PLC to do anything, but the fact that the BHI have had their own hate group page since at least 2007 shows that they are a known quantity, especially in NYC, Philadelphia, and DC where they rant in public places regularly. When media totally fail to report accurately on such a well-known phenomenon, that tells you a lot.

    @Barnard

"should we be relying on the SPLC to report accurately on the Black"

Yeah, probably. Look up "declarations against interest".

If there were any possible way to characterize them as something other than a hate group, rest assured, the SPLC would have gone with that. The fact that they didn't, well, you do the math.

No, Catholicism was. But you are on the right track. Catholicism was created as a melange of Christ worship ("Christianity") and pagan belief. The purpose was they the Romans could not contain the spread of Christianity, so they made the wise decision to control it.

As one theory goes, the Catholics then went on to create Islam as a phony check/balance.

Republicans should go full court press on asking Democrats about the BHI.

A condemnation would get them in trouble with the radical leftist base that is starting to dominate the party.

Anything less than a full throated condemnation creates commercials for 2020 with the politicians comments on the screen while a video of BHI preaching is played. The BHI spew vile insults about every race, religion and sexual orientation so it will be easy to make bespoke commercials for every demography.

Real Israelis are not big fans. There's actually an account posted online, by a former US diplomat to Israel, describing how the Israelis reacted to some black Israelites who relocated there, claiming right of return.

  7. Number of adherents? Oops, NYT forgot to include. I hear it is a large number. But plenty of column-inches to quote SPLC as gospel. No agenda here:

“The number of black nationalist groups has been increasing in response to President Trump, said Heidi Beirich, who oversees the center’s tracking of hate groups. These groups are able to use things like the president’s disparaging remarks about predominantly black countries and his abandonment of civil rights reforms to recruit new members, she said. They argue that the best response to the evils of government is to separate and form their own institutions, Ms. Beirich said.

That is not necessarily a radical idea for many black people. But Ms. Beirich said that groups like Hebrew Israelites were also anti-gay, anti-white and anti-Semitic. They believe that they are the actual descendants of Israelites in the Bible, not white Jews.

“These are really fringe movements, and they’re also very different than white nationalist groups that have access to power,” Ms. Beirich said. “This kind of thinking arose in reaction to white supremacy and the abuse and exploitation of black people.”

Even though their style might be intimidating, Ms. Beirich said that Hebrew Israelites did not have a history of violence

Oh yeah … our speech is violence … theirs isn’t.

That being said. Black Israelites don’t bother me with their theories any more than the Mormons do. I just don’t want to live next door to them. For that Ms. Beirich would put me on the hate list next to the “hate group” I am hating on. Hatey, hatey hate-hate.

  8. “By Kendrick Lamar, who seems to be some kind of rapping saint/genius to the press.”

The saying goes “Never trust a man with two first names.”

That goes double for two negro first names.

  9. One of the most striking proofs of the rigid control our entertainment media suffers is that the industriously wierd and objectively fascinating Black Israelites never got a reality TV show while an uncountable mass of forgettable nothings did. If you’ve never done so, seek out some of their videos and watch them: no cake-baking can compete.
Perhaps my favorite thing about the Black Israelites is their fantasy resolution of the world’s problems. What will life be like when their messiah comes?
Some Jews, if they had their druthers, would live in pretty much the present world (maybe the US would have gone metric). Some Muslims would have currently non-Musim countries run more-Islamically-but-not-like-Saudi-Arabia. I’ve heard this proviso often enough that there should be a word for it. Nobody but the United States Congress, Barack Obama, and the Las Vegas office of the FBI likes Saudi Arabia. Mormons have fantasy eschaton so shriekingly gay it could sing for the Killers — muscly wild men seize you and rip off your outer clothes, and, if you’re wearing the wrong underwear, have their way with you. But then everyone left is Mormon forever. I would have some totally doable legal re-arrangement, Constitutional strict constructionism made central rather than one way among many, a purge of bureaucracy and academia, Antifa and BAMN recognized as terrorists, all paper ballots with voter ID, busted tech trusts, more trust rather than more regulations given to cops, the structured and ethical enslavement of young Jewesses, normalized relations with certain foreign countries, and Korean-style internet with European privacy provisions. Hideaki Anno once represented the Buddhist apocalypse as everybody dissolving into orange goo.
None of this is anything like the world the Black Israelites say they want. The utopia of the Black Israelites is giant black superheroes beating up white people and smashing police cars, forever. They use drawings and photoshopped stills from action movies to illustrate this. It’s like the infamous Robert Crumb comic but less realistic.

The Israeli government put the brakes on their immigration after they learned of their theology and what they were up to, but they wouldn’t deport the ones already there. I read the Israelis were afraid of racism allegations or bad PR if they were forcibly deported. But the ones there have married and reproduced. The fashion designer is a black woman. So... she is "appropriating" Asian and European cultures just like the "Black Hebrew Israelites". Probably in a more visually appealing way though. The NYT thoroughly embarassed itself with its Covington reporting. So now it has to trash Catholic schools in general to prove that it was morally correct (if factually wrong), to attack the kids.

That's why they're fishing for disgruntled former students to complain about how "privileged" and smirky the other kids were.

Someone in another thread posted a link to this article, which exemplifies what the NYT is looking to do.

Israel is a lot less diverse than it would have been if they didn't ethnically cleanse like 500k people. It's diversity is very carefully managed by whatever means necessary.

I don't think many people are ignorant about israel here. There is a pretty glaring hypocrisy among the possible majority of american jews who support ethno supremacism for israelis and open borders for America. There is also a huge issue when you have people who very strongly identify with country A who are citizens of country B and work their way into country B's foreign policy establishment and basically take it over for the benefit of country A costing country B literally like a trillion dollars and thousands of lives.

Umm... yeah, they're in Dimona, but according to this the Jews didn't buy their shtick and they're basically illegal aliens who overstayed temporary visas dating back to 1969. So I stand by my original point, namely, that if they tried to emigrate to Israel today Bibi would throw them the hell out:

With the exception of a small number of individuals who have formally converted to Judaism, they are not recognized as Jews by the greater Jewish community...

The group aimed to immigrate to Israel under the Israeli Law of Return, which states that all Jews who emigrate to Israel will be granted citizenship. However, in order to be considered Jewish under the law, a person must have at least one Jewish parent or grandparent. As Ben Ammi and his followers did not fit this requirement, they did not qualify for citizenship. Nevertheless, this deterrence did not stop them from moving to Israel. In 1969, the group began moving to Israel using temporary visas. Most Black Hebrews have entered Israel as tourists with these temporary visas, and have stayed past the visas’ time allowance. Initially, the African Hebrew Israelites asserted that they were the only rightful inheritors of the land of Israel. They refused to convert to Judaism and asserted that most Israeli Jews were not descendants of the ancient Israelites.

Whenever a right wing group shows up on the SPLC’s list, media reports merely repeat the information, as if that’s enough to bar the group from any serious discussion: “The Conservative Patriotic Law and Order Citizens of America has been labeled as a hate group by the SPLC.” And that’s it.

If it’s a lefty group on the SPLC’s list, they are always quick to add “context”: “Although labeled a ‘hate group’ by the SPLC, many academics say that the Black Radical Brotherhood Honky Assassination Squad (Maoist) must be seen in light of the continuing oppression of African-Americans and…” etc., etc., with several sympathetic quotes and maybe one quote which faintly condemns the group.

The research and design aspects of the Manhattan Project were located in what is now Los Alamos for reasons of secrecy and security, not concerns about an explosion. Nuclear and other advanced research still takes place there for legacy reasons.

America’s nuclear bomb manufacturing facility is the PANTEX facility located Northwest of Amarillo, TX. A ten megaton blast there would do serious damage to Amarillo, although I don’t know whether any of our remaining nucks are that powerful. Almost all are well under one megaton.

I mostly agree with your sentiment, but I disagree with the substantive claim. Dreher is VERY often quite useful, and in my experience he is by far the most useful writer who strives to maintain some sort of "respectability". The reason "deplorables" routinely attack him is because he is so obviously so internally conflicted and yet repeatedly tries to maintain respectability.
Many of his commenters are ridiculous, and I really do not understand why so many professed leftists comment there. Maybe they just hate themselves.
But Dreher actually does seem to maintain connections with "real people" who would not feel comfortable at all writing to more outre writers. So there's that...
In response to a recent Dreher post, Vox Day wrote: "the cucksphere is shrinking". I wouldn't be surprised if Dreher actually read that and is reacting, in this and other current posts.
He clearly KNOWS they will hate him no matter what he does.
I think he needs a slightly more Nietzschean Christianity that allows him to acknowledge the enemy without giving in to hate.

Instead, whites fight back. This is especially important because whites don’t care about sons as much as they do about daughters so it is a potentially transitional moment.

However, what happens if they do sue the media and liberal judges close ranks to defend the perps? I already have a hard time seeing liberal DA’s in places like LA going after people for merely encouraging mass genocide of the underage students. Put those two defeats together and how will middle class whites react?

One of the things that keeps the society functioning is the belief that the system is still at its core the same one it always was and is fair. That of course is not the case but the illusion of fairness keeps whites in line.

I frequently say that the Democratic coalition members are groups that cannot live in an industrial / Enlightenment society.

The question arises, "What about the media? Isn't that part of industrial society? Don't journalists therefore live in industrial society? And don't they have agency?"

The layoffs show that the answer to the above is "no". Not a part, don't and can't live in industrial society, but rather in a bubble outside it, and don't (any more) have agency.

One thing to remember in fights is that the other guy always looks "six feet tall and full of muscle". But it's usually not true. The Left right now is losing its integration, disintegrating, and losing its funding as well. It should be adding more and better propagandists. Instead, money given the the current crop of clowns actually aids Trump [1]. Same thing with the tweets in which liberals showed themselves in favor of "destroying the lives" of high school students. Terrorism against an entire group of kids. Not good.

I've seen this happen before, back in the 1960s. Sometimes putting more money into your efforts makes them worse; that's a pretty good sign that you are in serious trouble.

Madame Nhu aka “The Dragon Lady” fled South Vietnam to the US and Europe rather than to Australia, but it’s conceivable that she might have said something like, “Put a shrimpy monk on the barbie.”*

  74. As others have commented, the Covington boys were flyover-America boys on their first field trip to the big city. And there they found themselves attending a drama. Look at them, standing on the steps as though they were watching a play, which it was. Only this one featured street performers. The guy circling on the wheeled thingy, the black dudes with their vile comments, the cameraman scooting about for better angles, actors all, basking in the spotlight.

Remember how you reacted when as a kid, you first saw this type of stuff going on in Times Square or Venice Beach or Key West?

So then the boys decide to join in the fun and make some noise of their own. But this isn’t allowed because in today’s world, although whites are to blame for every social ill because they alone have agency, when whites actually do express themselves and voice their agency they are shouted down, censored, silenced and persecuted. Strange that, huh?

Naively, these boys took Constitutional Rights such as Freedom of Speech literally, not realizing that they are just figures of speech.

Your concept of the polity is different from what I understand.

The majority of Democrats are the fringes, who absolutely don't care if there is a rabid black group. The anti-gay slurs won't bother the black or brown fringe elements, and the gays, who are leftist probably in the same proportion as Jews, will vote for anti-gay leftists before conservatives.

The Trump base will vote for Trump based on whether he gives in on the wall or not.

Condemnation or no condemnation of the Black Israelites will make no political difference whatsoever.

A more important issue is actually, why is there no law-enforcement action on the death threats received by Covington High?

  77. @TheBoom
OT: For once the right seems to be getting it right. There is a collective effort to help the parents go after the people who declared war on their kids. No apologies. Instead, whites fight back. This is especially important because whites don't care about sons as much as they do about daughters so it is a potentially transitional moment.

However, what happens if they do sue the media and liberal judges close ranks to defend the perps? I already have a hard time seeing liberal DA's in places like LA going after people for merely encouraging mass genocide of the underage students. Put those two defeats together and how will middle class whites react?

One of the things that keeps the society functioning is the belief that the system is still at its core the same one it always was and is fair. That of course is not the case but the illusion of fairness keeps whites in line.

I mostly agree with your sentiment, but I disagree with the substantive claim. Dreher is VERY often quite useful, and in my experience he is by far the most useful writer who strives to maintain some sort of “respectability”. The reason “deplorables” routinely attack him is because he is so obviously so internally conflicted and yet repeatedly tries to maintain respectability.
Many of his commenters are ridiculous, and I really do not understand why so many professed leftists comment there. Maybe they just hate themselves.
But Dreher actually does seem to maintain connections with “real people” who would not feel comfortable at all writing to more outre writers. So there’s that…
In response to a recent Dreher post, Vox Day wrote: “the cucksphere is shrinking”. I wouldn’t be surprised if Dreher actually read that and is reacting, in this and other current posts.
He clearly KNOWS they will hate him no matter what he does.
I think he needs a slightly more Nietzschean Christianity that allows him to acknowledge the enemy without giving in to hate.

I think you are confusing "Christian" with "Catholic". "Christian Schools" in the US usually means fundamentalist Christian (i.e. Protestant) schools. Although Catholics are Christians too, Catholic schools are usually referred to as Catholic schools.

I think the child molestation at Catholic schools orchard has been pretty well picked over by now and there is not much more low hanging fruit left to be plucked. Apparently, the rate of pedophilia among priests is not much different than that of the general population - the real problem was that when these guys would get caught, the Catholic Church would just cover it up and transfer them somewhere else where they would resume their evil ways. They would do this over and over. It was some combination of belief in Christian forgiveness, belief in psychiatric mumbo jumbo, practical considerations that they were short on manpower and sympathy for gays by a hierarchy that was itself full of gays.

Perhaps we could take this new-found knowledge and apply it to specialised parts of the military so they have hard to endure courses to get in and their recruits gain loyalty more quickly?

Indeed, there could be thousands of other applications. Men could be not too easy with their emotions so women feel more value when they earn them. Women could be not too easy, so men feel more value when they earn that.

Now, people will say, “Because he didn’t touch the white boy”. And I will reply, “He certainly did”.

Because sound is transmitted through moving air molecules. It is the displacement of things and those things impinged on the boys ear drums.

So, the question is, how close and how much noise can a person make before he is assaulting (literally) another person?

Imagine if the white Covington kid had just happened to have one of those small CO2 powered yachting air horns in the pocket of his jacket, pulled it out, held it one inch from the Indians ear and given him a blast. How would the commentariat react to that? We all know that they would pile on the kid. We would be discussing the very issue I’m bringing up.

Where is the line between your right to make noise and express yourself and another person’s right to be free from your attack?

Comment from Amazon; “This air horn is very loud. It is loud enough to damage someone’s hearing if you sound it too close to their ear. If you want to use it to wake someone from sleep, I strongly recommend that you sound the horn from outside the room where the person is sleeping.”

    Replies: @J.Ross, @Counterinsurgency

I frequently say that the Democratic coalition members are groups that cannot live in an industrial / Enlightenment society.

The question arises, “What about the media? Isn’t that part of industrial society? Don’t journalists therefore live in industrial society? And don’t they have agency?”

The layoffs show that the answer to the above is “no”. Not a part, don’t and can’t live in industrial society, but rather in a bubble outside it, and don’t (any more) have agency.

One thing to remember in fights is that the other guy always looks “six feet tall and full of muscle”. But it’s usually not true. The Left right now is losing its integration, disintegrating, and losing its funding as well. It should be adding more and better propagandists. Instead, money given the the current crop of clowns actually aids Trump [1]. Same thing with the tweets in which liberals showed themselves in favor of “destroying the lives” of high school students. Terrorism against an entire group of kids. Not good.

I’ve seen this happen before, back in the 1960s. Sometimes putting more money into your efforts makes them worse; that’s a pretty good sign that you are in serious trouble.

In 1969, the group began moving to Israel using temporary visas. Most Black Hebrews have entered Israel as tourists with these temporary visas, and have stayed past the visas’ time allowance. Older people may have had time to reflect and understand the world a bit. I want the young and enraged to vent so we can make public schools look like the torture chambers they are.

Apparently the Israeli government, which would according to the "Jews are hypocrites" crowd, would NEVER tolerate illegal aliens, has in fact tolerated thousands of them since 1969. It seems like their government is just as ambivalent/incompetent regarding illegal immigration issues as ours. To their credit, they do have a better border fence nowadays. Although as you say, the Black Hebrews didn't sneak across the border, they just overstayed their visas. For 50 years.

I would assume the pedophilia rate among priests is higher than in the general population, depending on how you place the age cut off for pedophilia (to Art Deco and the other autists, I know I can look it up). The great majority of the kids molested by priests were males, and the great majority of those males were post-adolescent. Sexually abusing a 15 or 16 year old boy is of course awful, and meets the legal definition of pedophilia, but upon hearing the word “pedophile” people more often imagine a priest molesting a younger child or even a toddler.

In other words the church has (had) a homosexual priest problem more than it has (had) a pedophile priest problem. The church still requires it priests to be celibate (there are exceptions, for instance if a married protestant minister of whatever denomination converts to Roman Catholicism, he's allowed to remain married). My belief is that a significant percentage of RC priests realized they had homosexual urges when they were teens, however didn't want to be homosexual, and thought entering the priesthood with its celibacy requirements would be a "way out" so to speak. However fast forward a number of years and they're still homosexuals, and there all these teenage boys around....

I’m not RC (though I am Christian) so don’t have a dog in this fight. Nor do I want to get into a theological back-and-forth, however I am also aware that the move to celibate priests came over 1,000 years after the time of Christ and I would argue it does the Catholic Church more harm than good. Requiring someone to spend their entire adult life alone (emotionally, not spiritually) and celibate is a huge ask and likely is a key contributor to the shortage of RC priests in the U.S.

What is also interesting is that generally the people taking the most glee in the RC’s homosexual priest problem are the same people that lambasted the Boy Scouts for avoiding the exact same problem via their ban on homosexual scouts and scoutmasters (now lifted, thanks Robert “Cuck” Gates). Some gay guy in his 30’s taking a bunch of teenage boys camping…what could go wrong?

One of their most active hitmen had briefly been an NFL player, and another former cult member somehow manages to constantly wrangle prominent spots at GOP campaign rallies. Surprisingly for a crazed Florida-based cult with all kinds of wacky antics, they don’t seem to have ever popped up on Dave Barry’s radar screen.

That’s six out of twenty six. Well beyond the “general population.”

Yeah, but perverts do tend to cluster, and child-rearing professions are not exactly "general population". The abuse in the Catholic church may well be higher than with other religions but that needs to be taken into account -- Catholics have led the way in building orphanages, schools, foundling homes, Magdalen shelters, etc. even in countries like Australia where they are in the minority. We now know that these are magnets for pedophiles and other abusers, and some of their victims will return to abuse others, and over the years, a culture of abuse develops, but up until the mid 70's psychologists assured us that "A sexual episode would cause little harm to a child, provided the police or courts did not ‘make an issue’ of it", and as late as the early 90's, they believed that "curing" a pedophile was more appropriate than locking him up. Guess when most of the abuse peaked?

Again, in the case of Australia, where Catholics operated much of the troubled-youth industry, so to speak, Catholic clergy are responsible, by one estimate, for six times the abuse of all other religions.) That's very disturbing, but it's not just a Catholic thing -- see elite private schools (or if you're British, public schools), military institutions, boys clubs, public schools (do a search on "passing the trash public school abuse", etc., and it's difficult to accurately compare the relative frequencies.

The Catholic church does have a special problem due to the circle of gay clerics ("lavender mafia") who are given free rein in the seminaries, and who frequently kick out anyone who dares to protest about the affairs that go on there -- in flagrant disregard of Catholic doctrine -- for being too "rigid", whereupon the rest meekly shut up and learn not to make a fuss. So, if you want to know where priests are taught their see-no-evil passivity that allows predators like the recently disgraced former Archbishop of DC "Uncle Ted" to grope seminarians and kids for decades while everyone else pretends they don't know, the seminaries run by the lavender mafia are a good place to start looking. It doesn't appear as if the current hierarchy is anywhere close to confronting that issue (as opposed to caving further, given that the surrounding society increasingly regards any suppression of consensual gay sex as homophobia that must be resisted), but these days, it's tougher to keep up the facade, so something may break eventually -- they do believe in miracles, after all.

And to get back to the original point, it's still not clear how much worse the abuse crisis there is But to other groups where you don't get the same splash by reporting it. (In fact, in most states, public school students have 90 days to report an offense. For Catholic institutions, that can be decades, and there's arguments that it needs to be higher.) So you won't get rich suing school districts, but suing a bishop who owns diocesan properties that poor parishioners bought up hundreds of years ago for almost nothing but are now worth a bundle, makes for a juicier living.

Lastly, it should be noted that for anyone who actually cares about Catholicism, an abusive priest is a monster far more heinous than an abusive preacher, rabbi, or imam, or school teacher. So, to the extent that the media love to hype the abuse inflicted by rapey priests -- and they do -- no Catholic should complain about it. It's an implicit affirmation, however much the media would deny it, that Catholicism is the one institution that really matters, and for that very reason needs to be taken out.

Well, according to the Times article, the SPLC does consider these “Black Israelites” a hate group. I gotta say, that surprised me. So gotta give credit where credit is due.

  164. @Father Coughlin
Number of adherents? Oops, NYT forgot to include. I hear it is a large number. But plenty of column-inches to quote SPLC as gospel. No agenda here:

"The number of black nationalist groups has been increasing in response to President Trump, said Heidi Beirich, who oversees the center’s tracking of hate groups.

Oh yeah ... our speech is violence ... theirs isn't.

That being said. Black Israelites don't bother me with their theories any more than the Mormons do. I just don't want to live next door to them. For that Ms. Beirich would put me on the hate list next to the "hate group" I am hating on. Hatey, hatey hate-hate.

    Replies: @HA

That’s six out of twenty six. Well beyond the “general population.”

Yeah, but perverts do tend to cluster, and child-rearing professions are not exactly “general population”. The abuse in the Catholic church may well be higher than with other religions but that needs to be taken into account — Catholics have led the way in building orphanages, schools, foundling homes, Magdalen shelters, etc. even in countries like Australia where they are in the minority. We now know that these are magnets for pedophiles and other abusers, and some of their victims will return to abuse others, and over the years, a culture of abuse develops, but up until the mid 70’s psychologists assured us that “A sexual episode would cause little harm to a child, provided the police or courts did not ‘make an issue’ of it”, and as late as the early 90’s, they believed that “curing” a pedophile was more appropriate than locking him up. Guess when most of the abuse peaked?

Again, in the case of Australia, where Catholics operated much of the troubled-youth industry, so to speak, Catholic clergy are responsible, by one estimate, for six times the abuse of all other religions.) That’s very disturbing, but it’s not just a Catholic thing — see elite private schools (or if you’re British, public schools), military institutions, boys clubs, public schools (do a search on “passing the trash public school abuse”, etc., and it’s difficult to accurately compare the relative frequencies.

The Catholic church does have a special problem due to the circle of gay clerics (“lavender mafia”) who are given free rein in the seminaries, and who frequently kick out anyone who dares to protest about the affairs that go on there — in flagrant disregard of Catholic doctrine — for being too “rigid”, whereupon the rest meekly shut up and learn not to make a fuss. So, if you want to know where priests are taught their see-no-evil passivity that allows predators like the recently disgraced former Archbishop of DC “Uncle Ted” to grope seminarians and kids for decades while everyone else pretends they don’t know, the seminaries run by the lavender mafia are a good place to start looking. It doesn’t appear as if the current hierarchy is anywhere close to confronting that issue (as opposed to caving further, given that the surrounding society increasingly regards any suppression of consensual gay sex as homophobia that must be resisted), but these days, it’s tougher to keep up the facade, so something may break eventually — they do believe in miracles, after all.

And to get back to the original point, it’s still not clear how much worse the abuse crisis there is But to other groups where you don’t get the same splash by reporting it. (In fact, in most states, public school students have 90 days to report an offense. For Catholic institutions, that can be decades, and there’s arguments that it needs to be higher.) So you won’t get rich suing school districts, but suing a bishop who owns diocesan properties that poor parishioners bought up hundreds of years ago for almost nothing but are now worth a bundle, makes for a juicier living.

Lastly, it should be noted that for anyone who actually cares about Catholicism, an abusive priest is a monster far more heinous than an abusive preacher, rabbi, or imam, or school teacher. So, to the extent that the media love to hype the abuse inflicted by rapey priests — and they do — no Catholic should complain about it. It’s an implicit affirmation, however much the media would deny it, that Catholicism is the one institution that really matters, and for that very reason needs to be taken out.

    Replies: @Truth, @Buffalo Joe, @William Badwhite, @Roderick Spode

Catholicism is the particular branch of Christianity at issue here.

I am Irish. Most men in the generation above me were schooled by Christian Brothers; it was NOT a pretty scene.

As for fundamentalist Protestant schools (how many of these actually exist in the States?), the virulently anti-sex attitudes of those branches seem equally likely to attract perverts seeking the shelter of righteousness.
