From Free Press:
I’ve Been at NPR for 25 Years. Here’s How We Lost America’s Trust.
Uri Berliner, a veteran at the public radio institution, says the network lost its way when it started telling listeners how to think.
By Uri Berliner
April 9, 2024
Berliner is in the business news section.
… Back in 2011, although NPR’s audience tilted a bit to the left, it still bore a resemblance to America at large. Twenty-six percent of listeners described themselves as conservative, 23 percent as middle of the road, and 37 percent as liberal.
2011 shows up on a lot of David Rozado’s graphs as the least woke year in the recent media, even better than 2010 and 2009. I suspect that the Democrats had a couple of positive accomplishments for the media to crow over in promoting Obama’s 2012 re-election — Obamacare and killing Osama — so the level of anti-core American hate was muted. Things started to slip in 2012 with the Trayvon Martin – George Zimmerman fiasco because white journalists tended to believe Black Twitter implicitly.
By 2023, the picture was completely different: only 11 percent described themselves as very or somewhat conservative, 21 percent as middle of the road, and 67 percent of listeners said they were very or somewhat liberal. …
From 2017-2019, NPR had RussiaGate to obsess over. But then that embarrassingly evaporated in 2019. At that point in August 2019 the NYT switched to its Plan B to dump Trump — Racism round the clock. Berliner doesn’t say that NPR did that, just that it went nuts over George Floyd in May 2020. CEO John Lansing (a Joe Biden-lookalike) announced:
In confessional language he said the leaders of public media, “starting with me—must be aware of how we ourselves have benefited from white privilege in our careers. We must understand the unconscious bias we bring to our work and interactions. And we must commit ourselves—body and soul—to profound changes in ourselves and our institutions.”
He declared that diversity—on our staff and in our audience—was the overriding mission, the “North Star” of the organization. Phrases like “that’s part of the North Star” became part of meetings and more casual conversation.
According to an NPR press release last year, “The main goal of his tenure was uniting NPR and Member stations under the “North Star” of diversifying the newsroom, content, and audiences. Under Lansing’s leadership, NPR’s executive team has evolved to include more than 40% people of color, from 9% in 2019.”
In other words, I’m okay, Jack. I’m CEO. But you younger white guys are hosed.
Most visible was a burgeoning number of employee resource (or affinity) groups based on identity. …
They included MGIPOC (Marginalized Genders and Intersex People of Color mentorship program); Mi Gente (Latinx employees at NPR); NPR Noir (black employees at NPR); Southwest Asians and North Africans at NPR; Ummah (for Muslim-identifying employees); Women, Gender-Expansive, and Transgender People in Technology Throughout Public Media; Khevre (Jewish heritage and culture at NPR); and NPR Pride (LGBTQIA employees at NPR).
… They became a priority for NPR’s union, SAG-AFTRA—an item in collective bargaining. The current contract, in a section on DEI, requires NPR management to “keep up to date with current language and style guidance from journalism affinity groups” and to inform employees if language differs from the diktats of those groups. In such a case, the dispute could go before the DEI Accountability Committee.
In essence, this means the NPR union, of which I am a dues-paying member, has ensured that advocacy groups are given a seat at the table in determining the terms and vocabulary of our news coverage. …
And this, I believe, is the most damaging development at NPR: the absence of viewpoint diversity. …
I found 87 registered Democrats working in editorial positions and zero Republicans. None. …
Because for all the emphasis on our North Star [Diversity!], NPR’s news audience in recent years has become less diverse, not more so. Back in 2011, our audience leaned a bit to the left but roughly reflected America politically; now, the audience is cramped into a smaller, progressive silo.
Despite all the resources we’d devoted to building up our news audience among blacks and Hispanics, the numbers have barely budged. In 2023, according to our demographic research, 6 percent of our news audience was black, far short of the overall U.S. adult population, which is 14.4 percent black. And Hispanics were only 7 percent, compared to the overall Hispanic adult population, around 19 percent. Our news audience doesn’t come close to reflecting America. It’s overwhelmingly white and progressive, and clustered around coastal cities and college towns.

RSS

Defunding NPR is the only solution to this problem. It is just another organization rotten past the point of reform. Berliner will never consider that an option though.
Being Mocked by SNL surely doesn’t help
In the early 1980s, I was a volunteer college student at Boulder’s NPR radio station. Our station manager was a bearded, Jewish guy who looked like, well, a stereotypical, bearded, Jewish guy.
I was a bearded goy with glasses, so I fit right in! Also, I had just been indoctrinated to communism by my political science professor.
At our station meetings, Mr. Beard liked to say that there were The 3 B’s: Boston, Boulder, and Berkley.
He knew that our mountain town was the stop on the way between to other, more famous, two.
The message was always clear, even in 1982: We, NPR, are left wing. We have an agenda. We are propaganda, not “National Public Radio.”
I met Ram Dass there one day for an interview, so that was good. He was charming and dressed exactly like me.
Hey, Steve, are you ever going to bring up what’s happening to VDARE?
That insane black prosecutor in New York is trying to destroy VDARE. I’d think that you’d be writing about this almost daily. What’s going on?
NPR’s newsroom looks a lot like the faculty at an Eastern liberal arts college.
One of the stupidest things Republicans ever did was to go along with funding this monstrosity. But they are the Washington Generals of US politics.
His account reminds one that leftoid culture is quite fad driven. It also reminds one that their default assumption is that any public institution they do not control has been stolen from them.
==
Pretty amusing. They’ve never given a rip about producing programming which might appeal to wage earners and they’re puzzled they do not have an audience among two population segments which consist largely of wage earners.
Radio listeners want to be entertained and affirmed. Listeners already know the ‘news’ story, and radio used newspapers for show prep. Many AM Talk listeners often knew the story-content better than the host/guest. All subsidized by taxpayers and 501 (c)3.
This non-profit NPR puppet is now just trying to cover his @$$, re-writing what actually happened, and it is hard to admit that public radio had an audience rating that was within the margin of -0.3. Nobody reading knows his name.
This guy notices stuff about public radio.
What’s interesting is what they don’t show.
Why nothing on the size of the audience as a population percentage?
Hey Goys! Look a
squirreloops, I mean: Look a “Joe Biden-lookalike” front-goy! It’s not the Jews’ fault that the Jew mafia-controlled media is lying to you about everything and destroying your country. Pay no attention to a clique of ki … Jews have bribed/appointed Biden/Lansing and then serve “under” and around them as handlers. Also, don’t look at the largest individual donors to the Biden administration (9/10 are Jews) and don’t look at the White House staff (~half are Jews) or who serves in the top positions in the Biden Cabinet (mostly Jews). If you do look you might notice that the elderly Biden’s handlers are virtually all Jewish. You wanna blame someone for opening the border goys? Don’t blame (((Mayorkas))). Blame Sleepy Joe. Wanna blame someone for precipitating a war in Eastern Europe? Don’t blame Victoria Nudelman. Blame Diapers Joe. Wanna blame someone for the unfolding Hunger Plan in Gaza? Don’t blame Anthony “I come to Israel as a Jew” Blinken. Blame Corrupt Joe.
Actually, I don’t even know if Lansing is a gentile or not but I’m assuming he is and that’s what Steve was getting at. Steve’s primary function, you might notice, is primarily one of running interference for his cotribalist mafia cabal of supremacist narcissistic psychopaths.
What is a core American? Sounds like a euphemism.
I’ve been using NPRogressive
for a while to categorize the substantial, midwit majority of the credentialed class. (The class where, I suspect, most here nestle.) These are your neighbors who only recently have lowered their surgical masks and Ukrainian flags.
Easily propagandized because they (i) absorb and regurgitate at high rates and (ii) understand, deep down, their fungibility and easy replacement should they annoy the Establishment. Many have other, admirable qualities and interests, especially when interacting one on one. But throw more than a handful together to observe the most politically conformist people, by far, that I’ve known in life.
Had a next door flatmate, girl in 3G type, in Chicago. She was a nurse…but kind of into Martha Stewart and Oprah and NPR. She was 30ish and sick of not having a boyfriend, so she decided to go to an NPR mixer and look for one. She came back incredibly disappointed. Every single man at the mixer was homosexual. (She had no issues with them politically and all…but that was not what she was looking for.)
P.s. I told her to wear the white, half-length skirt I had seen her in once…she had great legs…not pants or long dress. She asked if that was because it was more sexual or less women’s libby. And I said, “yes” (i.e. both).
P.s.s. I hate the breathy voice on NPR. “Fresh Air”. Recognizable instantly. So faggy.
“They included MGIPOC (Marginalized Genders and Intersex People of Color mentorship program); Mi Gente (Latinx employees at NPR); NPR Noir (black employees at NPR); Southwest Asians and North Africans at NPR; Ummah (for Muslim-identifying employees); Women, Gender-Expansive, and Transgender People in Technology Throughout Public Media; Khevre (Jewish heritage and culture at NPR); and NPR Pride (LGBTQIA employees at NPR).”
Team building on Tuesdays must be something like herding cats at the local humane society’s abused and exploited animal shelter.
Emotional fragility was once considered an unhealthy personality characteristic. In the current US cultural climate, emotional fragility is simply a standard of existence to embrace and foster.
NPR was obviously seized by late-middle-age rich white ladies who metooed Garrison Keillor and Sherman Alexie and set up their own little fiefdom.
I used to listen regularly, but I was so disgusted to hear these old ladies coming on to young black guys on air that I finally quit. And that isn’t a racial thing, either, as I’d be just as disgusted if they had Bill Gates on air gushing over young Ukrainian ladies. Also, the only men they air are so offensively homosexual that it seems as though there was a conscious decision to drive away most of the audience.
The fact that this Berliner guy lasted as long as he did doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Why didn’t he quit years ago? Rats fleeing a sinking ship?
Oh…and the girl next door story was from over 20 years ago. It’s not like NPR just became effeminate, now. They’ve always been that way.
Add onto that…that it’s pretty middlebrow. It’s how the 120 IQ libs think they are smarties. But it’s pretty light intellectually. Yeah it’s better than Hannity schlock. But it’s not iSteve, Firing Line, or even Jon Bachelor (or the lefty equivalents).
“I suspect that the Democrats had a couple of positive accomplishments for the media to crow over in promoting Obama’s 2012 re-election — Obamacare and killing Osama”
Obamacare was not a positive accomplishment. The supposed assassination of bin Laden (funny how this place calls John Lennon’s murder an assassination, but calls Bin Laden’s supposed assassination a killing) was a distraction from some other issue that I can’t recall at the moment.
2011 might have been peak Tea Party, but I can’t remember for sure.
They championed “Diversity” and were surprised to find that it led to ideological uniformity? Damn, who could have ever predicted that? So weird. No one could possibly have seen that coming.
Seriously these are our “elite”? How do they even tie their own shoes in the morning? Or do they have an illegal immigrant on hand to do that for them?
Let’s be totally honest here — and I mean really, truly self-aware — just for one moment.
What working class Trump-voting stiff, the true pasty-skinned bozo whose biggest expenses are Malt Liquor and Child Support payments, gave a damn about NPR to begin with?
That guy was already “lost”. And he isn’t likely to be “found” either, unless we convert the FEMA camps into re-education centers.
He certainly wasn’t donating to it.
So in my view, it’s good that New NPR (NNPR?) wants those whites dead.
It’s good that they’re not trying to win them over in a last-ditch effort to get them onto the lifeboat known as liberalism.
I have been an NPR donor since 2006, the year after I graduated from University of Wisconsin, Madison. In my 18 years of donation, I’ve only made two suggestions — once in 2016, and once in 2020: Attack Donald Trump.
They are doing exactly as I asked.
All these White retards, libs and “conservatives”, fk’d up this country, and now the consequences have just started.
Enjoy your negroes, cucks.
I just want to say that NPR has always, always been far left and part of whatever “communist” plan or march has gone on for decades.
I posted a comment from my own experience, probably the first comment here! But Steve will not allow you to read it until he walks into his closet or scratches his butt or whatever it is now.
But there it is.
Thanks, Steeeeeeve !!!!
(Not a good look, dude.)
The people who inherited media institutions like NPR have no sense how much hard work and endless compromise went into making them trustworthy.
The old joke about the Soviet official springs to mind. On a Moscow to NYC flight:
American passenger: So what are you going to do while in the States?
Soviet official: I plan to study your remarkable system for the defusion of regime propaganda
American: What propaganda system?
Soviet: Precisely!
NPR needs to get guys like Tucker Carlson’s father back in charge.
I almost never hear Berliner any more, he’s either retired or semi-retired. When I did hear him, years ago, he sounded old as hell and he only appeared specially to do longish editorial pieces. Absolute agree on the irritating voices.
Local NPR has excellent music programs on the weekend but they’re sloppy about annotating artist information.
This is vaguely like what happened to Romney McDaniel at MSNBC. I despise the woman but establishmentarian High Hewitt pointed out, when you’re the former head of the party, you know everybody, and so it’s a logical choice for a hire. These organizations come to see themselves as clubs rather than as news services.
“Despite all the resources we’d devoted to building up our news audience among blacks and Hispanics, the numbers have barely budged.”
Well only a white progressive/liberal would be gullible enough to think that throwing money at black and brown communities would increase NPR minority market share. Blacks love their morning radio shows, which are hosted by semi-famous black comedians like Steve Harvey, where they grouse about politics (da white man/Trump), or seek relationship advice, such as “how can I get me a good man???” No way in hell could any amount of money have pried away this demographic for NPR. Similarly, the Hispanics would prefer a Spanish language or semi-Spanish language broadcast and there’s not much NPR could do regarding that.
White liberals really do not belong in the same political party as poor Blacks and Hispanics but our political system is designed to discourage third parties. Here in Indiana two of the most Democrat cities are the college town of Bloomington and mostly Black Gary. The difference between the two towns is like the difference between night and day.
Conservative Whites are dwindling in numbers. The educational system has become so leftist that most younger Whites going through it have now been thoroughly brainwashed. Demographic changes mean fewer Whites overall. The United States is now like a car without brakes heading for a cliff.
I used to listen to NPR in fact I used to donate. The turning point became evident after I educated myself on immigration around the late 1990s. I noticed more and more NPR and public television tended to demonize anyone who had an interest in talking about immigration policy of how many people should come and who should come. What drove me over the edge was one day listening to a weekend program on NPR where they had gone to the border with Mexico and we’re interviewing a Hispanic lady who was very upset with the minuteman and was calling them murderers. The radio host never corrected the lady and listeners were left with the impression that the minutemen were criminal scum that we’re going to the border just to kill Latinos. In fact, the minute men were patriots trying to bring attention to how terrible the border was. That’s when I knew I couldn’t listen anymore.
Occasionally I would turn the station on and listen for just a little bit and it was like listening to a bizarro world of demonization and projection. They were also amazingly self-unaware. I remember turning to them one day and by chance, they were interviewing a very young woman living in Maine who was crying on the radio because she did not have any work and was having to leave the small town that she and her family had lived in for generations as she was crying in the interview she said her only hope finding work in her small town in Maine was that perhaps she could get a job in the local Somalian refugee center.
I have to tell you that local public television isn’t any better than NPR radio. One of my favorite recollections was listening to a woman who was hosting a show on a local public television station in Miami and they were covering immigration and the host who was from one of the islands in the Caribbean was interviewing a very young female immigration attorney about the issue of immigration. Finally, at one point the delightfully naive host asked the attorney why companies needed to hire so many immigrants when there were people here without work And the immigration attorney leaned in very close and lowered her voice as if she didn’t want everyone to hear and told the host that many of her clients could not hire local workers because they needed people to work seven days a week and they couldn’t find anybody to do that.
Is NPR the cultural vanguard or is it more likely a laggard? Upper Middle Class Americans, the Elite Donor Class and Academia have shifted far to the left. This is the NPR Listener Base. NPR is just catching up.
Corporate America is all in on supporting the 2020 BLM Riots, DEI and transgender policies. NPR is reflecting the Elite Consensus which is all it needs to secure grants and donations. The general public opinion is largely irrelevant.
Decades ago I would listen at times since the local station also aired a lot of classical music.
But it got more and more biased, uniformly pro Democrat and whatever the DC Blob fad was.
Subsequently their feminist legal guru “Nina Totenburg” was found out to be an admitted non sexual lesbian lover of the late Justice Ginsburg. She even wrote a post mortem book gushing over this. This from a supposed “reporter” who was just an aging leftist/feminist Fangirl. Like the old Russian Commies, their staff didn’t retire until they were 90 years old.
Zero conservatives or non liberals/leftists appeared as guests or reporters. Yet their constant nagging propaganda proclaimed how “fair and balanced” they were.
Yes, and House Negroes, Hispanics and sexual perverts (I assumed) also were given uncritical star treatment. The few non leftists were RINO Republicans or fake “No Label” type “moderates.
Their foreign policy stuff was war loving neocon blather.
I always assumed that their Pledge Drive money came from spinster White Ladies who were divorced former school teachers or government employees. No minorities. A few race grifters.
Don’t know how their Jew heavy reporter/donor base is dealing with the “We Love Hamas” progressive defection from the normally pro Jewish left liberals. But NPR “progressives” were tame Dem socialists like Bernie Sanders, not leftist critics of government per se (Glenn Greenwald, etc.).
They have been in a death spiral for decades. If Trump prevails, he needs to strangle this perverse media creature in the govt. welfare crib. I doubt that the sub Boomer gens bother with it anyway.
NPR’s narrative is anti-White.
I wonder if Uri Berliner decided to speak up after seeing most of his coworkers supporting Palestine after October 7th. Because he seemed to be on board with all of the shit he saw for awhile.
I wa so hungry for content while working would always listen (Rush and other talk radio was constant ads) but when Trump came alone in 2015 it was endless bashing, haven’t been back since.
I bet young whites are pretty conservative in Indiana.
If Trump prevails he needs to make NPR his own.
You shouldn’t be, what actually happened is worse. There was one local talk show where the male cohost asked his dumb bitch limousine liberal partner “When is this [young black ghetto guy we’re interviewing] going to go back to your hotel?” to wrap the segment up to much guffawing. Lol white people are cucks! Great one.
Today I heard NPR crying about losing almost half of their donations in the last four years. Enjoy!
My limited exposure to NPR long ago gave me the impression that it was always essentially hardcore liberal. The concept of “public[ly funded] radio” was abhorrent to conservatives.
Evidence?
https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2022/09/23/nina-totenberg-dinners-with-ruth-bader-ginsburg-00058467
Politico makes no such connection, but the article does say:
Is the “fishy aroma of Totenberg’s bouillabaisse” some sort of Beltway Insider deep cut innuendo?
About 15 years ago, an NPR announcer, Steve Inskeep, complained about the rise of Orban. He said “ when I look at historical maps of Europe, Hungary didn’t even exist until about 100 years ago. Why even care about preserving a historic Hungarian culture ?”
At the time I believed Inskeep retarded but now realize he was spitefully duplicitous.
Why go public now? Reading the article, the author’s most likely motivation is how NPR covers the Israel-Gaza conflict. It’s the only particular example of bias he brings up from the last 3 years:
“Oppressor versus oppressed. That’s meant highlighting the suffering of Palestinians at almost every turn while downplaying the atrocities of October 7, overlooking how Hamas intentionally puts Palestinian civilians in peril, and giving little weight to the explosion of antisemitic hate around the world.”
The author doesn’t outright say it but based on positioning maybe hints at a connection between the newsroom demographics going from 10% to 40% minority in the post-Floyd era and the tenor of their Israel coverage. It will be interesting to see how this basically internal leftist conflict in opinion making institutions plays out in the coming year or so.
WBEZ-FM (91.5) also has their direct influence on a Chicago newspaper.
It’s strange listening to public radio how scarce the words “cost” and “tax” are, as if everything comes for free when talking about benefits…
I would even go so far as to claim, because of NPR’s glaring omission of illegal alien crime, many people have been hurt, or murdered, because they don’t have a clue of what allowing millions of unqualified immigrants, including too many full blown psychopaths, drug dealers, alcoholic, pedophiles and opportunists from traumatized countries, with no identification, means to their way of life in general, and their personal safety in particular.
How many more bodies have to pile up before NPR ends their willful radio silence on this domestic carnage brought on by a qualifiedly incompetent old man continuing this charade of protecting the citizens of this country from foreign actors bent on causing us harm?
“If you only knew the power of the Dark Side.”
i guess since he was in biznoos rather than the politburo central committee he didn’t notice that it was at the time of Slick Willy’s inauguration that they lost their last pretense to objectivity. hell, they not only feted Lani Guinier*, but lauded the infinitely monstrous “don’t ask” policy.
* she was nominated for a position with influence over elections and overtly stated that some categories of people – you can guess which ones – should get more votes than others.
FWIW “Totenburg” translates as either “Dead City” or “Death City” – so fitting for someone who has dedicated her life to the extermination of those unable to defend themselves.
Imagine doing this and then claiming you were an impartial reporter and that the paper was impartial.
This is right up there with Ben Bradlee being JFK’s little lackey and then, quelle surprise, later going apeshit on Nixon, JFK’s old political rival and symbol of Middle America’s resistance to the Deep State’s communism.
And Bradlee went apeshit on Nixon for doing the exact same things JFK, Johnson, and every other high-level pol had been doing. Selective prosecution and selective outrage. Just like with Trump.
The corrupt filth that is the corporate media cannot be overstated, and has been so corrupt for a very, very long time.
Don’t forget Neocons or (((certain other)))) Republicans.
Ich bin ein uri berliner!!11!!
NPR has been an absurd joke for years, but it’s just a more ridiculous example of a broader phenomenon – after all we’ve seen woke struggle sessions/staff tantrums at The Atlantic, WaPo, and NYT.
A couple of decades ago when I actually worked for a Dem congress critter, we all knew the media was favorable to us but that not to a ridiculous degree. The arrival of Obama on the national scene was a huge sea change though. They wanted him to be president so bad that it was just a constant tongue bath that was by turns embarrassing and enraging to watch (obviously I was no longer on the Dem bandwagon then). This made clear to me that the national media had flipped from friendly but occasionally skeptical of leftist figures and politics to outright activist, and like the rest of the left they thought Obama signaled the relegation of the GOP to rump party and a new era of progressives getting whatever they wanted.
The defeat of Hilary was literally unthinkable to our new would-be overlords and caused what can only be considered a psychotic break, which is some sense is unsurprising given the higher incidence of mental illness in high IQ leftwing people. The problem is many – like NPR – went so far off the rails there is no getting back.
It took him about two thirds of the article to bring up the point which explains why it was written now.
Whether or not he really means the rest and anyone at NPR is listening. Well, actions speak louder than words. We should have a better idea by November. Does anyone expect NPR to be any less partisan in this election than they have been in the last two?
“We are all Larry Sinclair!”
Well, there’s always academia:
Good catch. This is redolent of long-standing jewish attitude toward (read: support for) anti-Whiteism on campuses followed by their sudden crack down in recent months on criticism on campuses of jews and the Zionist entity.
It ia a nefarious pattern.
Trump will do nothing about these publicly funded Bolshevik propagandists…We are doomed..
Yes. It was a huge shock and caused a lot of cortexes to explode. Remember all those women wearing ovary hats for the hastily arranged protest march (supposed to be the Queen Bee’s coronation)? Followed by a full-blown freakout that continues to the present day.
I once sat directly in front of Totenberg and (married to a man since 1972) network TV reporter Rita Braver alone together at the opera in the 90s. I’m 6’2″ and they’re barely 5′, so I enjoyed sitting up straight. As there’s no knee room in the Kennedy Center orchestra seats, I had to.
Back around 2005 I was head-hunted by NPR. One of the supervisors was interested in hiring a culture-news editor who could shake up (and snazz up) their draggy, predictable programming, so I spent a day interviewing, meeting staffers, banging ideas around, etc. At the end of it I told my sponsor that, while I wished him well, I didn’t think there was a chance in hell a mere individual could affect the vibes at the station. The staffers I met were aging Boomers, feminists and metrosexuals, and each and every one was self-evidently devoted to protecting his or her own little fiefdom — and each and every one looked capable of playing office politics very shrewdly. I couldn’t see myself spending years fighting endless but necessary turf wars. Anyway: I found the liberal sanctimoniousness and smugness at the place to be really overwhelming. Hard to believe it could get worse than it was then.
A tip for those not in the media business: the name-brand national reporters and commentators in the news biz? They went to the same schools as the people they cover. They live in the same Zip codes. Their kids go to the same schools and sometimes marry each other. They’re essentially the same people, or at least people from the same very narrow demographic.
I had a funny moment once when I was in Nashville doing some reporting. I was walking across the lobby of the hotel where I was staying and suddenly found myself amidst a small crowd of people going in the other direction who I felt I knew. They were exactly like the people I worked with at a media outlet back in NYC … but where were the familiar faces? I learned on asking that the gaggle of people who’d walked past me were Al Gore’s staff. In other words: Al Gore’s staff might as well have been my media colleagues, and my media colleagues might well have been Al Gore’s staff. Same crowd, basically.
A dated but still-shrewd snapshot of how it all works is the Robert Altman miniseries “Tanner ‘88.”
Trump should have killed it when he had the chance. If he wins in 6 months from now, I hope he gets serious about the cultural rot.
It’s a microcosm of what’s happening to our country. Good citizens being raped by our tyrannical, increasingly third world government.
Trump is too narcissistic and frankly dimwitted to do what’s necessary to fix this country. I’m watching all the drama around him and the election in a detached manner. He’d probably win a fair election by a healthy margin but between his personal legal stuff and “election fortification,” I just don’t see any realistic way he’ll be in office next year. Add his extremely advanced age and there’s a good chance he’ll check out naturally before then anyway. The stats are vague but I reckon the median American dying these days is younger than he is.
Best to refer to NPR as Government Radio
Ditto for PBS
Is everybody involved with the Supreme Court, such as NPR’s Supreme Court correspondent Nina Totenberg, a huge opera fan?
An actor who is famous for his hysterical liberalism is voting for Biden and this is news, how?
The author quoted above is right. NPR used to be left-of-center, but in a somewhat sane manner. It was interesting to listen to, if only to hear views of those who were politically opposed to mine.
Now, it’s just a straight-up propaganda outlet that doesn’t even feign objectivity or journalistic neutrality.
I still listen to it occasionally, but not for long. After a few minutes, I regret that I tuned in and switch to the local classical music station (so long as it’s not the top of the hour when NPR hijacks it) or even C-SPAN.
I do wish though there were an intelligent rightist counterpart to the likes of NPR. There are rightist stations, to be sure, but I find them to be very low brow as they seem to cater to the lowest common-denominator and frequently resort to manufactured shock value, rather than sober analyses of the day’s events.
Wow, that was 26 years ago. Different NPR. Different SNL. Different times.
I’d just like to point out what’s behind that, for the many who probably don’t get it: “Khevre” is a pedantically “scientific” spelling of a Yiddish word (which comes from a Hebrew root and was subsequently adopted into Modern Hebrew) meaning, roughly, “the gang.” (Not in the criminal sense, but in a “the gang’s all here” sense.) No actual Jew spells the word that way (they’d say “Chevra” or “Hevra”); using that spelling- and, by the way, “scientific” transliteration of Yiddish in a way that divorced it from its Hebrew roots was a big thing for the Soviets- sends a signal that this is *East European* “Jewish heritage and culture” (and God forbid we should just say “Jews”), and is not, notsireebob, related to any country in the Middle East that begins with an “Is” and ends with a “rael”. There’s a segment of the American Jewish Left that *loves* to talk about the paradise that was Eastern Europe. (Their knowledge of Judaism has never progressed much past “Fiddler on the Roof,” ignoring some scenes.) And that’s precisely the type of Jew who populates NPR.
Not that it helps them.
William Rehnquist redesigned his gown after watching a performance of “Iolanthe.” Alas, his successors have not maintained the practice.
If you think Biden and Blinken are somehow biased in favor of Israel, you must not speak to many Israelis.
Thanks
What surprised me was Newt Gingrich sitting a few rows behind them, I believe with his lemon tart third wife, so it would have been the early Aughts. Pretty sure it was the same performance of Carmen.
NPR had Car Talk, Prairie Home (despite a liberal bent some core values) or, in NYC at least, Danny Stiles’ Music Museum. I bet even Oscar Brand’s folk music show had conservative listeners, even though he was a 1930s era communist.
Those hosts all died off or got me-tooed in Keillor’s case.
These days there’s a nightly show mostly about Gaza suffering. Y’all should like that.
I think David Mamet listens just to be outraged.
The thing I noticed immediately was they used to have Jack Spear, the news announcer, lead with “President Obama announced today…” in a deep serious voice. Once Trump was President it was always a higher pitched “In a move to yada yada, the Trump White House announced…”. From reverential to “Would you believe…?” Or “Get a load of this.” Biden it’s kind of in between.
That was my assumption. Seems to have turned a lot of liberal-but-not-leftist Jews, though there was always a bit of a generation gap with a lot of the older liberals still believing in the free speech and presenting both sides thing to some degree. There was a joke I saw somewhere on X about the ACLU going from defending Nazis to firing people for disagreeing with a black boss.
(Not to mention that may have been self interested too. After all, if you have a high verbal IQ, focusing on argument gives you a competitive advantage.)
I mean, he’s not giving them everything they want, but everyone else is angry with him letting the Israelis bomb the Gazans out of existence.
My beef is with liberal Jews supporting immigration and being anti-white and screwing up the most philosemitic nation in centuries; they let you do whatever you want and you repay them with wokery and trampling on the nation’s history? (The few right wing Jews I talked to basically agree with me.)
I don’t really care what Israel does and frankly am kind of rooting for them. Enough being on the receiving end of this crap. Be a normal nation and destroy your enemies. But I am cynical.
Richard Hanania’s talked about this quite a bit. The right has a real elite human capital problem. I was looking around for a good highbrow right wing news source to balance the NYT. The WSJ isn’t really it (though it’s not as bad as the NYT and WaPo) and Fox is a bunch of celebrity news and “random liberal did stupid thing X”.
I love Steve but he can’t cover every single story in the world.
Does anyone think Biden is in control? He’s a front man.
Both in the US and in the UK the leadership are embarrassed that Israel are slaughtering so many people, but in neither case is there any intention to withdraw support.
When you compare the bombing of Gaza to the much less severe bombing of Aleppo around Christmas 2015, with calls for a no-fly zone and 24/7 media coverage of Evil Assad’s Barrel Bombs™ and the gallant White Helmets (conspicuously absent from Gaza), you can’t help wondering if double standards are involved.

I empathize with you about the Whimming. Mr. Sailer finally explained a while back that he bases it on the “quality of commenter” [sic].
Mine have always been allowed through, eventually, and AFAIK so have yours and those of others. Yet what remains after the blueberries settle is “not a good look,” either, but a passively suppressed, distorted record of the discussion.
Relatedly, I’ve just had another comment “trashed” [publicly] by Mr. Unz. And he’s often done so surreptitiously. His censorship is apparently limited to the so-called “anti-vaxxers” he lumps together and holds in contempt, but it seems to me a worse look.
When I first pointed out this article in another thread, that was my thought as well.

I think he’s overstating the case. It certainly looks that way, but you have to keep in mind that leftists ruthlessly suppress anyone on the right with a shred of talent. Rush Limbaugh was one of the rare exceptions who actually made it, but recall that he was so passionately hated by the left that they tried to legislate him off the air.
You see this across the board at leftist institutions. They brook no dissent. The numbers at universities give the game away: there’s no way that over 90% of people who should be professors are democrats, but that’s the usual situation in academia
So it isn’t so much that the right lacks talent, but rather that this talent has seen the writing on the wall and moved on to another field.
No. Justice Alito is a baseball obsessive who keeps volumes of books of his own box scored games.
Let’s play a game. You just started your car with the radio tuned to NPR. What is the first phrase you hear?
I’ll start: “As the only transgender cabaret performer on Palestine’s West Bank, Iqbal faces daily discrimination. . . Even from his own family.
Au contraire, being mocked by SNL is the ne plus ultra of cultural relevance; I think Inside the Actors’ Studio became much more popular after Will Ferrell mocked James Lipton. As an aside when Molly Shannon was being interviewed by Terry Gross on NPR’s Fresh Air she all but admitted that her character in the link you posted was based on Gross.
The blog Stuff White People Like no longer updated, but its last entry was on This American Life, which is the quintessential NPR show. I had a teacher (a textbook liberal who was PC before that was even a term) who used to listen to NPR on the way to work. At the time their morning host was Bob Edwards* and once a week he would have Red Barber come on as a correspondent, but I mention it because that was the last time I heard someone referring to listening to NPR as it aired. As it stands, its programs are popular in podcast form. Besides the two I mentioned, Alec Baldwin had an interview show called Here’s The Thing which was entertaining. It still exists but it has moved over to a full-time podcast network.
*who passed away two months ago
“ Also, the only men they air are so offensively homosexual that it seems as though there was a conscious decision to drive away most of the audience”
I always assumed that being gay was a requirement for males employed at NPR. I was calling “All Things Considered” “News for Liberals” back in the 80’s, when I still called myself a liberal. To quote David Byrne, “ Same as it ever was.”
I wonder if Garrison Keillor was actually turfed out because he liked girls.
Ironically the people who bleat about “our democracy” and the alleged threat to it posed by Trump are the very same people who thought in 2016 that the politics and demographics of the country had shifted enough that voting would essentially just ratify Democratic control in perpetuity.
I may be overly literal here, but Fresh Air is hosted by Terry Gross. Despite the way she spells her name and her unfashionably-short hair style, Gross is a 73-year-old woman. She has been married to a man for the last 30 years, but has not reproduced.
If you want to know more about her personally, she was interviewed by Marc Maron on his WTF podcast and it was illuminating.
The inflection point for NPR’s ideological slide was a certain escalator ride in NYC. They, along with all the rest of the prestige media, abandoned even the pretense of impartiality to get Trump and his voters.
I remember it quite well as a former occasional but consistent NPR listener. The shift was jarringly extreme, to the point that I could not stand the blatant lies about what Trump said or meant at any given appearance.
I would also be very surprised to see Kavanaugh at the opera, as he is famously a season-ticket holder to the Washington Nationals. Of course, this doesn’t preclude he (or Alito) being fans of both…
Oh, I agree. The right has a human capital problem in large part because the left controls all the organs of culture; smart conservatives go into the private sector where they can make money rather than fighting a losing game.
That reminds me of a quote by Democratic strategist Anita Dunn, who has worked for Obama, Clinton, and Biden:
I highlighted the word “demographic” for a reason. Note she says “demographic majority,” not “Democratic majority.” This was either intentional, or a Freudian slip. She is very clearly talking about the Democratic Party’s plan to flood the country with minority voters. Dunn played a key role in Biden’s 2020 campaign. She left briefly early on in his administration, but returned two years ago to work for a president who is flooding this country with illegal imigrants as no president has ever done before.
The Farce is strong in this one.
That mirrors my experience. I used to consume a fair amount of NPR radio programming while driving, and at home always preferred the MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour to network news. They were very professional, as was radio newscaster Carl Kasell.
NPR was always heavily left and Jewish, but not so aggressively, offensively in-your-face left. As NPR got more female and nonwhite it became over-the-top insufferable. The only subjects they seem to cover are gays, abortion and Israel.
I haven’t listened or watched for years now.
Leftist Wokism is the established religion, and it’s imposed, in part, by globalist corporations that need to break down national barriers to maximize their profits. Standing up against the established religion is hard to do, especially when it has trillions of dollars on its side.
I would call that more of a wry observation than a joke per se, as it is 100 percent true.
As for the ACLU itself, it is sad how far they have fallen. Conservatives made fun of them 30+ years ago but at least they stood up for everyone back then. Now, if you aren’t a member of a protected class*, they don’t care if your first amendment rights are being violated. In The American President Michael Douglas gives an impassioned defense of the ACLU as his opponent (Richard Dreyfus) derisively called him a card-carrying member of the organization.
*To a typical lefty, the word “discriminate” literally implies “against a member of a protected class”. If you aren’t one, you can’t be the victim of discrimination.
I stopped listening to NPR (and radio in general) years ago, but recently I was helping my elderly, liberal father work on his car. The ignition needed to be on for whatever we were doing and so that meant that the radio was also on. It was tuned to NPR and the story was about how Muslims were being discriminated against at airport security. Of course all the evidence of discrimination boiled down to Muslims saying that they felt discriminated against. There was also no mention of the thousands of people murdered by Muslims using airplanes that was the cause of all the security measures in the first place.
That was my last venture into the bizzaro world of NPR.
To write that in 2011 National Public Radio’s audience tilted a bit to the left is something of an understatement (a rare commodity these days, by the way). It was more than “a bit” but on the other hand it was nowhere near what it is now: Exhibit One in what constitutes stereotypical progressivism, complete with all the self-serving banalities and half-truths.
An early and very influential president (1977-83) of NPR was Frank Mankiewicz, a Democratic political hack and Grassy Knoll-brain on the Kennedy assassination.
See Nat Hentoff’s critique of ACLU chapters conduct in re anti-abortion protesters. This was written ca. 1990. Alan Dershowitz also said at the time that the ACLU contained exponents of free speech, but these people were always tussling with political leftists who had no time for it. William Donohue’s history of the organization published around the same time advanced the thesis that free speech was always a hook for an organization devoted to other objects.
My previous father-in-law was an entrepreneur-turned-novelist, whose excellent first and only book Memoirs of an Invisible Man sold for a ton of money. With some of that payday he bought an enormous if decaying Queen Anne house overlooking the Hudson River in Riverdale, the fancy neighborhood in The Bronx.
Around 5pm every weekday if you happened to be there, you would start hearing groans and the occasional shout from his elegant home-office suite on the second floor: these were the byproduct of his three hours’ ritual hate-listening to NPR’s All Things Considered.
It was always a pleasure to discuss the network’s output with him, as it would invariably elicit his comical NPR House Style over-pronounciation of the expressions “Nicaragua,” “María Hinojosa” etc.
Few “ordinary Americans” (I love that phrase) listen to NPR. Many of ’em probably don’t even know what it stands for. No matter, because the oligarchs listen to it, and it is they–not grassroot Americans–who, er, “run things”. So I guess the rest of us will continue to munch on those grass roots, right?
Demography is democracy.
A lot to hide in a tilde. Also I guess you are a glass half full kind of guy. If ~half are Jews, what are the other ~half? Chopped liver? NPCs? Gotta keep your eyes on the Jew ball.
Here’s how you play the game. If someone’s great grandfather was 1/2 Jewish or once ate in a kosher deli, say he’s a Jew (gotta get to that ~half). If he is so goyish that you can’t possible pretend that he’s Jewish, say you don’t know whether he is Jewish or not.
“Leftist Wokism is the established religion”
True enough, but if you ask them what it is that they actually believe you’ll be showered with New Age bullshit and kumbaya, all to the tune of John and Yoko crooning “Imagine.”
So it’s not really left wing people or just Democrat voters but upper middle class socially individualistic white gentile WEIRDs and Jews that NPR is made by and for today. It’s amazing how race is never seen as possibly being a proxy for class in America.
I am curious what the sex ratio for modern NPR listeners and producers is these days. That might explain it’s decent into madness.
Altai’s Law: Any environment in a Western society dominated by women post 2014 will eventually descend into total woke metldown due to the severe lack of anyone willing to express unpopular opinions. The absence of males will remove the control rods and lead to total meltdown as the coherent woke activists brow-beat even non-woke women to adopt or express false preferences due to women’s deep innate sensitivity to social ostracism and desire to obtain social status through moral posturing. (Men don’t get the same benefits or engage in inter-social competition in the same way, it doesn’t naturally occur to them to engage in moral preening like women)
They aren’t just letting them bomb them out of existence; they (and you) are supplying the bombs.
I listen to NPR Radio a lot, and I have never heard any pro-Trump commentary. Often someone will be interviewed about Trump, but it is usually a Trump-hater, and never someone who represents Trump’s positions or views.
What did he think of the John Carpenter adaptation of his novel? The Chevy Chase/Daryl Hannah vehicle bombed.
Married with Children made fun of this brilliantly
LOL. I was never able to articulate it, but you hit the nail on the head.
NPR was created under the CPB law that was pressed forward by LBJ. He placed Frank Mankiewicz in charge. It has essentially been in Jewish hands from the beginning. You’ll all remember Mankiewicz….he was RFK’s Press Secretary who urged the Senator to take a route through the Hotel kitchen after winning the California Primary.
χάβρα (chavra) is a word for “synagogue” in modern Greek, although συναγωγή (the origin of the English word synagogue) also exists and is probably more common.
Leadership at NPR after reading Uri’s column: “Aaaaaaand, how is any of that a problem?”
Mr. Berliner has the same charming old-school naïveté of Bernie Sanders if he actually believes those people are thinking anything other than “mission accomplished”.
Well, sure, but the mendacity of (some) American Jews has little if anything to do with Israel, apart from the demographic change they have welcomed and encouraged having a negative effect on Israel- and on American Jews too, for that matter.
I dunno. I was raised with it being implied told to me that I was a guest in America, which meant being grateful and loyal, and not thinking that I should be trying to be making some big impact on American society. My family viewed Jews- especially leftist Jews- who tried to do so with suspicion if not an open feeling that they were making it worse for the rest of us. But then my grandparents were all immigrants who made it to the US right before World War II. I imagine Jews whose time in America stretches back a generation or two longer, and whose ancestors had less pressure in their immigration, don’t realize those simple truths.
And, of course, it’s not a coincidence that the Jews least connected to actual Judaism are the ones who make the most trouble,
I think that works better changed as follows.
A few years ago I worked with a man who actually was from Nicaragua and he pronounced it in the normal English manner, not the ridiculous NPR way.
In case anyone thought this might make any difference at NPR.
NPR defends its journalism after senior editor says it has lost the public’s trust

Might be worth looking at the links in the paragraph beginning: “The essay ricocheted Tuesday around conservative media”
The women mocked the vibe pretty well, but the writers didn’t know when to stop with the same lame joke. Idiot boxing.
Prediction: he’ll be fired.
This is completely OT, and anybody who is annoyed by the subject should just ignore it, so here goes nuthin, this is just pub-talk, it has nothing to do with anything, unless you’re also a pub-talker……
The other afternoon I had nothing to do, and so I began contemplating an issue from a very long time ago, and I wondered, What would other people think about this bizniss?
Back when I was a kid, at one point I managed to cultivate, among several other things, a serious reputation as a sort of hard-core avant-garde theatre artist. One of the people who helped me to do this was a very bright and attractive young lady who kind of came aboard on my projects, and in the course of this whole thing, I kinda-sorta helped her become a star in her own right.
So here is the crux: there came a point where I had an opportunity to create a very large, high-profile thingy which would kind of make or break my reputation: I could either do a very whack-job avant-garde thing which would feature my lady friend prominently, but would really focus on my own zany sensibility; or I could do, which was also in my mind at the time, a straight-up normie version of GB Shaw’s “Saint Joan,” with my lady friend as the star, which would have catapulted her into total stardom, but woulda left me looking like just some competent guy who just sort of did stuff.
What would you do? Nine, ten, six, four, three…….
Khevre is just the official YIVO transliteration. YIVO was headquartered in Vilna pre-war and in NY after the war. I don’t think that YIVO was Soviet or Communist influenced. The Soviets had their own system of transliteration (into the Russian alphabet of course).
YIVO and the transliteration system was part of the movement to have Yiddish considered as a “real” language and subject for scientific study and not just some sort of folk dialect of German like Jamaican Patois is of English. Every language written in a different alphabet has one or more SYSTEMS of transliteration which may differ from each other and all of which are only approximations of the spoken language – e.g. Mao Zedong or Mao Tse-tong. And in addition there may be folk transliterations not conforming to any official system – e.g. Gongbao in official Pinyin become Kung Pao on Chinese restaurant menus.
I don’t think that this has any real “Leftist” implications but it does indicate a “pedantic” knowledge of the language only. I agree with you though that the employees who call their NPR Jewish interest group “The Khevre” probably don’t actually know Yiddish as a native language and Khevre is a result of book larnin’ only.
“I met Ram Dass…”
You mean you met Richard Alpert, an American Jew who made money off his Eastern philosophy/yoga shtick.
Alpert’s commodification of religion was little different that Jim and Tammy’s, except he did it with a non-Christian focus and for a hipper audience, so he got better press. And he had a better sense of style. (And a better accountant.)
I listen to NPR every day with my morning coffee, as it does provide interesting news, from time to time. That said, NPR is pretty much a deep state propaganda machine. The anti-Trump and pro-Vax agendas are writ large and totally one-sided.
The question in my mind is what would / should a right wing non-commercial radio sound like? We have never really had one so we can only imagine but if properly funded and ran well, it could actually be very good for our side. The internet has helped ameliorate the need for a conservative NPR but there are certain gaps that need to be plugged. Also, by being in the public airwaves and sponsored by the government no-less, it has the imprimatur of something more than just a seat of the pants podcast.
If you ask yourself, where is the right wing environmental movement, or right wing labor movement it would all tie into immigration restriction. But the problem is that the financial interests trump popular issues in the media so those movements remain nascent. Same thing for a right wing peace movement. Conservatives (white, male, rural, native born) tend to do much of the funding and certainly, dying, in our wars but they are easily marginalized so that cannot get off the ground. Lastly, where is the men’s movement? Women dominate the media because they make something like 80% of the discretionary purchases, and hence, are the one’s advertisers want to market to. Non-commercial television and radio should be crushing this segment but they just cannot f’ing utter a peep. As a result there nothing of value or interest to a man or a woman on men’s issues. Meanwhile, we get bombarded with pink ribbons and pissing and moaning about why women only outlive men by 6 years.
Minnesota Public Radio conveniently has two stations, one solely for music. That’s the reactionary one. I never listen to the news station, so can’t judge how radical it is. How does local coverage compare with NPR network treatment? Does it follow Conquest’s Law?
Mankiewicz was George McGovern’s campaign manager. His hiring was an indicator that the board wasn’t trying to be non-partisan. NPR was not formed until Johnson had left office. Mankiewicz took office in 1977, during the Carter years.
Depends how loyal your lady friend is. People who become very successful tend to forget those who helped them succeed, so I would probably have gone with option one.
Supposedly one of the reasons Wade/Giles sounds more like Chinese than the official pinyin has to do with Cold War politics-they were trying to approximate East European systems rather than English.
As Jack notes, Soviet transliteration of Yiddish is different from YIVO transliteration. Using ‘kh’ for both ‘Kaf’ and ‘Chet’ is YIVO standard. Soviet transliteration went much further on the phoneticization angle and eliminated otiyot sofiyot. As you note the Soviet goal, at least in large part, was to sunder Yiddish from Hebrew/Aramaic influence.
I don’t think this is true at all. From the wiki:
n 1943, the US military tapped Yale University to develop another romanization system for Mandarin Chinese intended for pilots flying over China—much more than previous systems, the result appears very similar to modern Hanyu Pinyin.
Development
Hanyu Pinyin was designed by a group of mostly Chinese linguists, including Wang Li, Lu Zhiwei, Li Jinxi, Luo Changpei,[4] as well as Zhou Youguang who was an economist,[5] as part of a Chinese government project in the 1950s. Zhou, often called “the father of pinyin”,[5][15][16][17] worked as a banker in New York when he decided to return to China to help rebuild the country after the People’s Republic was established. Initially, Mao Zedong considered the development of a new writing system for Chinese that only used the Latin alphabet, but during his first official visit to the Soviet Union in 1949, Joseph Stalin convinced him to maintain the existing system.[18] Zhou became an economics professor in Shanghai, and when the Ministry of Education created the Committee for the Reform of the Chinese Written Language in 1955, Premier Zhou Enlai assigned him the task of developing a new romanization system[dubious – discuss], despite the fact that he was not a linguist by trade.[5]
Hanyu Pinyin incorporated different aspects from existing systems, including Gwoyeu Romatzyh from 1928, Latinxua Sin Wenz from 1931, and the diacritics from bopomofo.[19] “I’m not the father of pinyin”, Zhou said years later; “I’m the son of pinyin. It’s [the result of] a long tradition from the later years of the Qing dynasty down to today. But we restudied the problem and revisited it and made it more perfect.”
Indeed, Max Weinreich(Co-founder and Director of YIVO) was notably anti-Soviet and fought back against the Soviet attempt to minimize Hebrew influence on Yiddish as witness his polemical essay “Vos volt yiddish geven on hebreyish”? You can see chapter and verse on the matter at
https://yivo.org/What-Would-Yiddish-Be-Without-Hebrew
Well, no. I truly feel that he was genuine, and I met him and talked to him.
His eyes twinkled, as they looked into mine.
BTW, the “Jew” thing should be irrelevant to this discussion.
Anyway, what is more important to me is what he learned and taught. If you cynically think those things are — nothing — and that Baba Ram Dass was only like a blogger in a closet — well then I think you are wrong.
Richard Alpert (BTW I know his entire history, so that his name is fully known to me) was born a “Jew.” He transcended “Jew.” He transcended that in a way that I wish others here only could!
He was part of something long before you — something you simply, apparently, do not at least appreciate.
Namaste.
I don’t know the Russian – Yiddish transliteration system but I assume they use the single letter X (Kha in Cyrillic) which is an almost exact sound-alike to Khaf (without the dagesh). (BTW, in the international phonetic alphabet X is used for khaf.)
He often complains about commenter Patrick McNally, who posts 100,000’s of word per year basically towing the official story line with bad arguments and worse citations.
So I asked Unz a few weeks ago, why don’t you just delete his comments and restrict his user handle the way you did to my original handle back in 2020 (because I dared challenged his opinions on the covid response; this was weeks or months before the injections were rolled out.)
He deleted the comment.
Seems all writers here lack awareness of their own hypocrisy.
I hardly ever listen to NPR news these days, though I occasionally scan the Web site to see if there are any interesting news stories, so I hardly noticed that Bore Bedwards had died a couple of months ago, or that he left NPR 20 years ago.
However, if you say “Alexa, what is on the news?” it will give you a summary of NPR news headlines.
The thing that strikes me these days is that it all seems incredibly dumbed down, perhaps because the main target audience is elderly, hard-of-hearing people in nursing homes.
Every story starts the same:
“Joseph B., an eighty-one year old resident of Washington, DC, lives in a large house with his wife, but there are no stores within walking distance on the food desert of the Pennsylvania Avenue district of the city, so he and his wife are entirely dependent on grocery deliveries.
“It’s not really a problem compared to what folks in Gaza are having to deal with,” laughed Joseph. “I was just saying to my friend Bibi the other day that he really ought to allow a DoorDash franchise in Gaza.”
Amnesty International also seems to have lost its way: https://instapundit.com/641052/
I thought the lack of details about his meTooing suspicious. He made Minnesota Public Radio a lot of money for decades.
I think some Men of Unz hallucinate Communist (or Jewish, although to the Men of Unz these are the same thing) influence in places it doesn’t even exist, like YIVO transliteration or for that matter Pinyin.
Pinyin was created under the auspices of the Chinese Communist government so you would automatically tend to think that it was somehow ideologically contaminated but in fact its creation seems to have been done in a technocratic way and free of ideological influence. Mao really didn’t go nuts with the ideological stuff until later when his power was more consolidated and in early days he was even able to lure some Western educated Chinese and even Western technical experts back to China. Of course, Zhou Youguang later ended up being “sent to the countryside” during the Cultural Revolution.
LBJ also set up what is now FAFSA thus expanding the percentage of degree holders (and federal student loan debtors.)
Per Turchin’s over production of elites theory, a large number of under employed degree holders tends to destabilize and nation.
I thought you were proud of your tribe’s high-IQ overrepresentation in the corridors of power and achievement. Why the false modesty?
It is interesting to compare NPR with VOA.
There is quite a bit of overlap, but VOA puts out a lot of stories that are just verbatim AP stories, and a lot of the rest are just rewritten Agence France Presse and Reuters stories with AP photos slapped on top of them. NPR also includes verbatim AP stories.
This raises the interesting question as to whether there is any editorial difference between AP and VOA.
Actually NPR news is not too bad if you can get past the patronizing opening paragraphs and it compares quite favorably with other news web sites like BBC, Canadian Broadcasting Corp. and Australian Broadcasting Corp., often going into more detail on global stories.
NPR is better consumed on the Web site than on the radio, in my opinion.
I found this How Do I Hate NPR? Let Me Count the Ways which was first published in 1993 over 30 years ago. Still spot on.
https://chicagoreader.com/news-politics/how-do-i-hate-npr-let-me-count-the-ways/
Steve has good message discipline and he’s trying hard to rebrand himself as Mr. Moderate. Consequently, he’s dropped immigration restriction as an issue. He also doesn’t like to criticize government actors. So he presumably won’t be reminding anyone of his association with VDARE.
LOL. I stopped listening to NPR during one of the periodic hisy fits over Iran because that’s exactly the impression I got: very targeted patronizing coverage, “A member of the Republican Guard was recently spotted in the Upper West Side.”
I wonder if people can select their nursing home based on whether they have Fox News playing in the common area or CNN playing in the common area.
He made money selling books, but that’s pretty different from convincing people to give you money because a supernatural being will supposedly reward you for doing so.
Even if one finds the Eastern philosophy stuff to be silly or faddish or whatever, it’s pretty inoffensive as it doesn’t try to compel people to do much of anything, except to consider a different internal mindset. Alan Watts for example is another 70’s era Buddhist philosophy explainer who I always found interesting and thought-provoking. He’s worth a listen if anyone is unfamiliar.
Oh, my mistake: I was thinking of the Soviet Yiddish spelling in *Hebrew* letters, in which for example “Shabbes” ended in a samekh, to divorce it from its Hebrew origin.
(Ironically, the same thing is done in Israel, but for a very different reason: To stress the Ashkenazic pronunciation of the charedim.)
As I said to kaganovitch, my mistake: I was thinking of the Soviet Yiddish spelling in Hebrew letters.
The word is also sometimes found in the *names* of synagogues in the US, in reference to whatever group founded it. For example, a synagogue can be called “Chevre Tehillim” if it was founded by a group that would get together to say Psalms (Tehillim).
Unless “χάβρα” has a Greek root, it’s almost certainly from the Hebrew, “chaver,” meaning “friend.” That becomes Yiddish chevre, which gets into Modern Hebrew as “CHEV-ra.” Otherwise in Modern Hebrew “chev-RA” means “company” in the business sense.
Demographically, what should the ratio be, Jack?
Well that’s a thoughtful response, so thanks.
As it shook out, I did in fact go with the crazy version (I never really even told her I was considering Saint Joan, although it would have been a blast and she would have hit a grand slam) but it worked out best for both of us — the thing really did feature her at her absolute best, and because it was just so downright crazy and unexpected, it got a lot of press and totally sold-out performances, and because she was at the front of it, it got her rave reviews, so everybody was happy.
But I still sometimes go to sleep at night imagining her in the Saint Joan version. It’s such a great play.
I stopped listening to NPR when I bought my first car equipped with Bluetooth. Ever since, I don’t listen to any radio, I just find a nice long podcast before I leave home.
I’ll go with CNN in the hope that anger will help me stay sharp mentally.
You two are talking past each other. The Soviet system you’re thinking of wasn’t about spelling Yiddish in Cyrillic, it was about changing how Yiddish was spelled in Yiddish (ie Hebrew). Their main thrust was to spell everything phonetically — not just the German words (which were always spelled phonetically) but the Hebrew words too. Which, as one of you said, was meant to cut Jews off from their deeper roots. Thus, instead of ראש השנה some monstrosity like רוש האשאנא.
Speaking of Tucker, anyone else catch this from yesterday (April 9)?
CBC is 100% funded by tax payers and it is very leftist. Clone of NPR politically.
Apparently NPR is only a small % funded by tax payers.
Thank you.
Ram Dass was a genuine person who just happened to experience certain things when the time was right in America. Personally, I find his enlightenment useful, and that is all. He was a gentleman who didn’t seem to expect or ask for anything at all.
Any real hustler would have done better, I know! (If you don’t understand, just try to learn from things I have shared about myself here…)
His eyes twinkled as they looked into mine.
Please don’t conflate the man with … with … God. Not one of us is …. God.
But each of us is a small piece of God.
After all of these arguments and typings are done with, you and I and everyone here will be gone.
Namaste.
It’s funded by member stations which in turn receive grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and also from state and local government. CPB is one of those agencies which should be shut down. As for the local stations, they should be told to dun the county government and be satisfied with what they get.
It really is amazing how the CBC has gone from being at the centre of Canadian politics to being a tiny clique that only talks to itself on our dime.
Compare how the CBC treats Jordan Peterson to the way it treated Marshall McLuhan is his day.
CBC should be shut down and its plant and equipment put up for auction. You can give severance to the hourly employees and to the salaried employees who have nothing to do with the editorial matter. It’s a relic and a pernicious one.
Not usually a promising phrase, especially if self-applied
If you were actually avant-garde you would have cast yourself as the titular character, catapulting yourself, as a surprise (at the premiere), into the audience (literally—with a working catapult) at the finale.
Cue: “Bigmouth Strikes Again” to awed cheers and applause
“Quality of commenter”, aka “doesn’t upset my tummy or the tummies of any jewish HBD acquaintances.”
It would be better to transform the CBC’s funding model. I would prefer it if Canadians were given credits they can allocate to arts, cultural and news providers. The CBC could then compete for these credits along with everyone else.
The French language arm of the CBC, Radio-Canada is much more popular and does a far better job, in my opinion.
“Well that’s the news from Lake Wobegon, where all the women are young and good looking and all the men are ugly fat perverts trying to get in their pants.”
Keillor’s sneer at middle America “above average” was easy to spot. He helped turn Minneapolis into the charming city it has become while earning a wonderful way ‘above average’ income doing so.
He likes GoodNoticing about the Jews. He finds BadNoticing about the Jews to be – as usual – antisemitic.
Love you, dude. Keep on keeping on.
The 10/7 attacks have caused many Jews to suddenly notice left-wing propaganda, even when it doesn’t involve specifically Jewish issues.
Bullshit wasn’t one ? what a shame.
Let’s get back to what you wrote. My vague impression is that when you say “From 2017-2019, NPR had RussiaGate to obsess over. But then that embarrassingly evaporated in 2019”, you’re being willfully ignorant. How? You followed this story by this author and realized, but could fully bring yourself to say the quiet part out loud, that Putin decidedly aided Trump. Again, you neglect hcontext.
Furthermore, yes, NPR has changed its approach in the last decade. Yet, you once again drive a narrative without taking that account how conservative outlets offer as well a “distilled worldview of a very small segment of the U.S. population”. But you just can’t bring yourself to NOTICE it as well.
Thanks for the further info on NPR. It seems it’s taxpayer funded too.
Completely agree about shutting down CBC.
The original argument for public broadcasting was that bandwidth was limited. That’s largely irrelevant today.
Once these organizations get established they continue from momentum and taxpayer funds. I remember my parents complaining about CBC back in the 1960s.
That’s funny. I grew up on the East coast, and we knew two B’s–Burlington and Boulder. That’s a much better comparison because they’re both small, liberal university towns in mountainous states.
I also volunteered at an NPR radio station, but I was just interested in music. Being a DJ was mildly fun. I enjoyed broadcasting my voice, but I disliked managing all the various audio equipment.
“I thought you were proud of your tribe’s high-IQ overrepresentation in the corridors of power and achievement.”
So if you think there’s too many of them, should there be a quota system so they can’t tip the scales? What’s your solution to this apparent problem?
Off-topic—It seems Mr. Sailer also has refrained from talking about family formation issues. Any ideas why?
.If our illegitimate president steals a second term you can forget about “right wing” media including your favorite gad-flies …….will they rake Unz commenters over the coals ?….. it’s possible . If Trump wins expect a color revolution that will make the one in 2020 look like tiddlywinks……..that’s what the ten million plus dangerous looking military aged men the democrats brought in are for.
Wow, it’s like you chased her great-great grandmother through the snow ,you cossack!
I never discussed that with him, in part because I knew he’d known Chevy Chase during their brief time together at Haverford, and I thought it would be indelicate to bring up the disastrous movie. My guess is that he thought, “Well, I got paid…”
I didn’t say Jewish elite overrepresentation was a problem, or required a remedy. It’s just that a side effect of this overrepresentation is that they have a lot of political and cultural power.
That’s a good question. The issue of economic malaise and low fertility by young people is very salient right now and the concept of “affordable family formation” is a very moderate policy concept. Maybe he just forgot about it.
New York’s WNYC also had New York and Company with host Leonard Lopait which was a serious show about culture but most especially books. Lopait got metooed and the noon time time slot got replaced with some unbearable raspy voiced wokester of color.
He’s old enough and “liberal” enough that they’ll probably ease him out with dignity. But I agree one way or another, he’s probably gone.
You know, I kinda-sorta hoped for less weak sauce from the likes of yourself. Oh well.
“If you were actually avant-garde you would have cast yourself as the titular character,”
Well if you had actual avant-garde bona-fides, then I reckon you could just call up Bill or Jim and ask them all about it yourself.
Oh wait… you don’t know who Bill and Jim are. Huh. Pity.
Get cute someday.
“I didn’t say Jewish elite overrepresentation was a problem, or required a remedy.”
Followed by…
“It’s just that a side effect of this overrepresentation is that they have a lot of political and cultural power.”
appears to be cognitive dissonance on your part.
You clearly indicate Jews are overepresented. And with this power they cause major problems for whites, right? So that is an issue. At least that’s what we are told on this fine opinion webzine.
Now, if there need not be a solution to address this overrepresentation, and it’s not a problem, that puts you square in the anti-white camp. Why? You’re not acknowledging Jewish malfeasance in law and society. Again, that is what we are told.
“That’s a good question. The issue of economic malaise and low fertility by young people is very salient right now”
I concur. Do you think enforcing anti-monopoly laws, busting companies that employ illegal immigrants, and strengthening unions are viable policies? Why/why not?
Thank you.
They fear a vengeful Congress and President. They shouldn’t. The American people can’t even get the R pussies to hold anything hostage to enforce the border.
And this ‘NPR went South recently’ is nonsense. If you recall the Clarence Thomas hit job they helped lead not to mention all the meretricious ‘authorities’ they’d profile making nonsense claims like ‘tax breaks don’t stimulate the economy’ without any opposing guest to challenge these utterances. And who can forget their full throated promotion of Piss Christ? Art dontcha know.
And, as useless as Bush II was he won FLA fair and square. But, not according to NPR.
NPR’s been hopeless for decades.
But the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) was created during the Johnson Admin. and John Macy was its first head. Who was Macy?
As part of its mandate to create an interconnected system of broadcast stations and to distribute and sponsor programming, the CPB quickly set up two further organizations: the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), established in 1969 to create and distribute television programming, and National Public Radio (NPR), created in 1970 to handle radio news and features.
It’s too bad about NPR, Cory Flintoff read the news report so beautifully
Since we no longer make long drives through the southern boonies where NPR might incongruously be the only news station coming in, I no longer have to worry about it. My last NPR memory will be of female correspondents agreeing that “Trump has no guardrails! No guardrails!”
I have mentioned the one weird time my wife mistakenly set her alarm for NPR instead of a far more agreeable buzzer. Imagine waking in the dark at 4 AM to hear strangers in your bedroom murmuring about environmental racism in Africa
Go for it. Musicals Are Back. But Todd Phillips may have beaten you to it.
The idea is to get in and then make the long march through the institution/s. OK, in this case perhaps the not so long march.
To get a flavor of the enterprise look at ‘The Red Haggada’ published by Komsomol. (A couple of excerpts at the link below)
https://henryabramson.com/2019/04/12/the-bizarre-red-haggadah/
I’d read this woman’s book, “Wordslut.” But only if she is a BiPOC womyn. I have my standards.
“The arts” are a fee-for-service activity which appears naturally on the open market. No good reason for government subsidies. People who wish to donate can do so. They want government money, they can ask the county board for it.
Also ‘חמץ’ was ‘כאמעצ’ after elimination of otiyot sofiyot. (End word variants of Kaf, Mem, Nun, Peh & Tzadi for non Tribe peoples.)
It’s not false modesty. What’s false is the accusation that 1/2 of the White House staff is Jewish.
Yo, GTo, I was just pub-talking. We’re pub-talking, right? Look, admit it, the vision of post-catapult you and a couple of banged-up audience members being wheeled out the theater by paramedics as “now I know how Joan of Arc felt” plays is gold, baby. BTW I had a genuine laff at your Ferlinghetti scene. This round’s on me. WTF is that shite you’re drinking?
For those not following this, generally speaking Yiddish is written phonetically (but using Hebrew letters in place of the Roman alphabet even though most of the words are of German origin).
However, the one exception to this rule is that Hebrew words (about 20% of Yiddish is Hebrew words, many having to do with religious matters) generally retain their Hebrew spelling (and Hebrew spelling is NOT phonetic. In particular the language is written mainly with consonants.) Just like in English if we use a French word like bourgeoisie we leave the spelling alone and don’t change it to buzhwasee.
But the Soviets wanted to break the connection to Hebrew and religion.
So the Hebrew word for leavened (actually soured, as in sourdough, but that’s another discussion) foods not eat on Passover is spelled something like CH M TZ (CH and TZ being single letters for which there is no English equivalent) and someone who is familiar with both Yiddish and biblical Hebrew would recognize this word and its pronunciation. But in Soviet Yiddish orthography it would be written as pronounced as CHAMETZ.
Also Hebrew and Yiddish (and Arabic) have certain letters that appear in a different form if they occur at the end of a word and the Soviets tried to get rid of these also. This was before they decided to get rid of Yiddish altoghether.
“Same thing for a right wing peace movement.”
The military was always a traditional career choice for conservative leaning small town White guys, like me. I went to work for them in 1981 as a civilian worker paying the soldiers. The desire for foreign wars came from politicians, not from the people sent off to die in those wars.
When Ron Paul ran in the Republican primaries, he received more political donations from military members than any other candidate running. A Pat Buchanan-Ron Paul-Donald Trump America First conservatism is consistent with our earlier tradition of having a military solely for defensive purposes.
The new Woke military is rightfully seen as the enemy of conservatives. I am 67 so it is a bit late for me to make a career change but many younger White males are making a choice not to start a career in it.
Citation needed.
I called her as a “Our Bodies Ourselves” woman long before she ever announced that she was.
There’s just something about them that makes them hard to miss.
Jack, I’m pretty sure that at this point it’s only us elders of Zion still following this thread. We could convene our monthly meeting now in reasonable privacy. (I think it’s your turn to take minutes, er, the protocols.)
Fun fact: The medial forms actually developed from the final forms, not the other way around.
I assume χάβρα is derived from Hebrew, unless it’s from quite closely related Aramaic.
You could translate that “Red Haggadah” to English and it wouldn’t feel out of place at many a “Social Justice Seder”.
Yeah, when I’m in Spain e.g. I say “Nueva York” and pronounce my own name as they would etc. when speaking Spanish. That’s the normal approach I’d argue.
He mocked middle America (and of course it’s not like there’s nothing to mock), but in a fairly mild way. Not especially funny either. There’s only so many fake ketchup ad bits to mine. He seemed to have some affection for the old Lutherans. He took some flak for opposing the secularisation of Xmas. And he also poked fun at modern art, liberal higher education and pretensions. Which is why I said liberal, but in the old time way pre-woke DEI way.
It should be whatever it is when you hire people on merit and without quotas and get over your Jew obsession.
Yesterday, over on Twitter, Julie Kelly wrote of Uri Berliner’s essay,
Today, Fabius Maximus replied,
Patronage employees in the Executive Office need to be vetted for political loyalty. The hiring pool for the patronage employees consists of people with connections. You’re not going to get a whole lot of merit there. The current ‘National Security Adviser’ is a lawyer who worked for Amy Klobuchar. He had a lot of liberal education as an undergraduate, but no military service and no indication he knows squat about military technology. Neither did he have any time in the Foreign Service or the intelligence agencies. No time in international business.
==
They often hire elite lawyers as Counsel to the President, but not always. Gerald Ford hired his one time law partner from Grand Rapids. Richard Nixon hired John Dean, whose credential was that he was a protegé of Richard Kleindienst and a friend of John Erhlichman’s protegé Egil Krogh; his career in private practice was an embarrassment.
==
For a different angle, see Ron Nessen’s account of his time on Gerald Ford’s White House staff. By Nessen’s account, he was working medical residents’ hours. How is it the head flack with 45 people working under him is working (or, rather, spinning his wheels) for that amount of time? Well, he was a former TV reporter who had never supervised anyone before.
==
Note also Parkinson’s Law. The NSC staff under BO had 10x the number of positions as it had during Henry Kissinger’s tenure.
I vividly remember a segment from the 90s where they interviewed a blind photographer in all seriousness.
NPR stations brag about being supported by listeners. What really happens is that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, funded by you and me, gives money to local stations who then kick some of it back to NPR, allowing them to maintain the fiction of “supported by listeners like you.”
The government should not be in the broadcasting business. Period.
I read the Wikipedia account of how Leonard Lopait got me’too’ed. What I find interesting in most of these cases is that these strong independent women don’t simple tell these jerks (nicely) to knock it off. Say something like “I don’t think my 250 lb boyfriend would like you saying that”, laugh, and walk away. Instead they go crying to HR, and now we have a culture where everyone is on edge.
Maybe, but one of stupider things Republicans have allowed is the Federal Financial Student Aid I.E. “student loans” and the 503C non-profit status of colleges and universities (which creates a highly beneficial tax break for very affluent donors). This is what feeds the left wing beast and provides the cannon fodder for NPR and everything else “progressive”.
Sad, but true.
I personally know a number of people who are patronage employees. Yes, they are vetted for political loyalty but they are ALSO vetted for merit. Some people work steps away from the Oval Office and some are down in the basement sorting mail and it’s not random as to who gets which job.
And regardless of his time management skills, Nessen’s hours show that these jobs are not no-show jobs or that the people who take them are not dedicated. Often they make much less in these jobs than they would in the private sector and do so because they want to serve the public.
No NGO or any edu org should get tax deductible status, or tax exemptions, unless they have 30% Republicans & 30% Democrats. Diversity AND Inclusion – thru actual political quotas.
NPR, all big colleges, most big SPLC/ Amnesty type orgs — either have 30% Reps & Dems or no tax benefits.
Freedom of having an org that discriminates, or one that is partisan, but no more fake non-partisan groups.
The Robespierres.
As Trump found out with Comey, it’s very important to the effectiveness of an Administration that the Executive Branch (at least at the upper levels) be staffed with politically reliable people who can be trusted to carry out the agenda of the President, who is answerable to the people who elected him. Otherwise they will carry out the agenda of the Permanent Government, which is answerable to no one. Sometimes loyalty is more important than competence.
AD gives the example of Ford hiring his former law partner as White House counsel. Whatever his competence was, he was 1000x better for Ford than the top partner in some DC firm if that guy was a liberal Democrat who would have been giving him slanted advice and leaking stories to the press while at the same time trying to build a case for impeachment against him.
“Often”? John Dean was entertaining a mess of offers from private firms in 1972. His previous career in private practice had lasted from about June of 1964 to February of 1966, at which point he was fired for cause; the firm’s senior partner told him at the time that he was in danger of being hauled up before a disciplinary panel. Now look at the career of one Philip Perry, aka Mr. Liz Cheney. Back and forth between public sector positions and private firms. Makes a ton of dough as a BigLaw partner. I’d refer you as well to Kenneth Adelman’s brief article on the subject in The New Republic ca. 1984. He was plain about it. He had an agreeable job and would upon his departure receive offers he never would have gotten without his time in government. Or, how about one Rahm Emmanuel, who had no history of private sector employment beyond some time in fast food joints in his teens. He was paid an eight digit sum for ‘investment banking services’ by Wasserstein-Perella.
I agree with your point. In a related vein, former law clerks of SCOTUS justices and former solicitor generals almost invariably command top dollar with the most prestigious law firms after leaving government service. Nor is this phenomenon limited to the legal profession. Lots of former colonels, generals, navy captains, and admirals grace the ranks of major defense firms, drawing lucrative salaries, after retiring from the service.
Sometimes it’s even worse–there is a revolving door between government and heavily regulated/connected businesses. We live under a fog of conflicts of interest.
There is no question that time in the White House is a resume builder that increases your market value when you leave. Ask the Big Guy.
I have often thought about that, and have always wanted some kind of men’s rights activism to be a part of the second half of my life now that I’ve theoretically hoarded enough to live on for the rest of it. (Yes, I know, kids. My sperm are probably crap by now and I am not confident at developing enough game to keep a gal from divorcing me five years in-or producing a bunch of woke little America-wreckers.)
Thing is, the existing groups suck and most of the people who would be interested would do more harm than good. I have more sympathy for incels than most but they’re not really going to make an effective movement. I am a little worried about my ancestry being a problem in any right-leaning movement, but then that didn’t stop Ed Blum from launching the lawsuits that overturned affirmative action.
Thanks. I liked “A herd of independent minds.” Another example.
Which is why the Jewish establishment is so vigorous in their pushback against disparate impact.
There is no single “Jewish establishment”.
Pushing wouldn’t make any difference anyway – “disparate impact” law was enshrined by the Supreme Court in 1971 and isn’t going anywhere.
The 1971 court consisted of:
Warren E. Burger
William O. Douglas
William J. Brennan, Jr.
Potter Stewart
Byron R. White
Thurgood Marshall
Harry A. Blackmun
Not a Jew among them.
Find a real Christian wife. They exist (in orthodox/conservative denominations). You might have to get baptized first yourself, though (bonus: most Christians have no problems with Jewish ancestry for obvious reasons). If that’s a deal-killer might be better off staying single.
He made money selling books and founding/leaching off various half baked foundations which, if you care to do a little digging on your own, reveal that most of them were co-founded by other elitist jewish wannabe Hindu spiritualists, most of whom, including Dass, have inconvenient allegations of sexual misconduct lingering around them.
Dass himself was fired from Harvard for giving drugs to his female students; the logical implication being he was getting sex in return.
He was a huge proponent of LSD and achieving some grotesque version of spiritual enlightenment from it. How many impressionable young and well off (mostly) female acolytes he put on the path to drug addiction, sexual promiscuity, venereal disease, and pregnancy/abortion cannot ever be fully known.
His travels to India were almost certainly to take part in the very popular sex and orgy “ashrams” (LOL) filled again with gullible and wealthy white women from the UK and US. Ashrams that were well known even at the time to be centers of severe mental physical and sexual abuse of its female attendees. Think Baghwan Rajneesh and his cult. The late Christopher Hitchens wrote about and did a televised report about these Indian sex cults after visiting one in the late 70’s early 80’s.
As stated before but just to refute Buzz’s daft dismissal of the pattern, much of Dass’s “work” was with the assistance of or partnering with other jewish layabouts and lifelong grifters. So yeah Buzz, it’s absolutely relevant.
and to you Buzz:
“Well, no. I truly feel that he was genuine, and I met him and talked to him.”
I don’t doubt this at all. That is the greatest skill of the conman isn’t it? To convince his mark that he is genuine.
“He transcended jew”
This is pure cope, but it’s your narcissism that earns you the troll tag.
I the most worldly Buzz Mowhawk, MET him, you see! I M.E.T. him! And because I, Buzz Mowhawk, met him, he is therefor true and pure and honest in all his doings!
The reality is this guy fucked a lot of people up with his spiritual con. Anyone who proclaims hard drugs are the path to enlightenment is a fraud, and frankly, you should know better.
Namaste, my ass. Patronizing and pretentious crap. Dass’s accomplishments are embarrassing. You know who else had more accomplishments than me? Pol Pot.
You used to be a lot better than this.
I am offended by everyone questioning the merits of White House staff selections. How dare you make baseless assertions that ethnic nepotism plays any role whatsoever in who gets to work in the White House? After all, Monica Lewinsky was chosen for a White House role and we all know how meritocratically deserving she was and spectacularly successful she’s been proven to be.
Shame on you.
Generally speaking, comment threads tend to get less interesting over time. This one is an exception. It gets really interesting starting here.
how about one Rahm Emmanuel, who had no history of private sector employment beyond some time in fast food joints in his teens.
Zeke Emmanuel once remarked, in my presence, that his brother Rahm…ummm…didn’t score very well on those nasty IQ tests.
But, my God, was he ever zealous.
Which, come to think of it, applies to the entire Emmanuel tribe.
There are many people who make their living in the non-profit sector (which BTW can pay quite well).
Emmanuel chose political fund raising as his career. This is a particularly well compensated segment of the non-profit community because someone who is effective at his job can bring in many times his salary. Emmanuel worked his way up from local to national fund raising and finally was appointed to direct Bill Clinton’s campaign finance committee.
Campaign fund raising is akin to “sales”. Generally speaking, “sales” is a less IQ driven part of business, whereas many high IQ people are introverts and are not at all good at “sales”.
What was that famous saying attributed to Napoleon? It’s the dumb but diligent ones who have to go?
“Every contemporary freethinker would believe in Christianity if born in medieval England, and slavery if born in Ancient Rome.”
–Aaron Haspel
Are you thinking of this?
““I divide my officers into four classes as follows: The clever, the industrious, the lazy, and the stupid. Each officer always possesses two of these qualities. Those who are clever and industrious I appoint to the General Staff. Use can under certain circumstances be made of those who are stupid and lazy. The man who is clever and lazy qualifies for the highest leadership posts. He has the requisite nerves and the mental clarity for difficult decisions. But whoever is stupid and industrious must be got rid of, for he is too dangerous.”
Attributed to German General Kurt von Hammerstein-Equord.
I heard that recently, although I think it’s often code for “I’m really Latino.” Unaccented English until you hit a Spanish word.
Actually, the logical implication is that he was a pimp. It’s funny how the method is the same at Harvard as deep in the ghetto.
That’s not false at alll.
You’re right. Most things Republicans do are stupid and against the interests of their voters.
This is in Ashurit, I assume? Iirc Ktav Ivri did not have final forms at all.
WASPs
Governments love buying propaganda and undermining cultural norms using your money. You don’t expect the politicos and culture czars to spend their own money insulting us and defaming our beliefs do you? And further, don’t hold your breath waiting for the Rs to prioritize getting rid of this stuff. If you recall Paul Ryan got on swimmingly with Andrea Mitchell who was indistinguishable from any run of the mill NPR hack.
This is really shocking. Imagine a Jewish guy selling Clinton style third-way (read financialise the economy) politics to other Jews and finding in that a lucrative career path. Who knew?
You don’t understand the meaning of the word ‘decidedly’.
Hint: “rights” are for children. Grown-ups are expected to fulfill duties. This is why white women win as women but lose as whites. The white man is viewed as the adult, but the non-white man as the child. Someone has to be the adult in the room, and that falls upon the white man.
In a divorce case, forget about your “rights to the child”. Concentrate on the child’s right to you. That way, the wife or the judge or the state is put in the position of depriving the child. Similarly, any other case can be so spun. The white male pilot has the solemn duty to bring his passengers in alive. The black female pilot does not– and that is not her fault! Focus attention on the parties whose fault it is.
This is why “identity politics” has not worked and cannot work for white men. It boils down to “Give me my rights or I’ll throw a tantrum! Gimme my rights NOW or I’ll poop my diaper!”
Who’s going to take such a white man seriously?
One Republican you might blame is Fred Rogers. He persuaded a skeptical John Pastore:
Mr. Fred Rogers: Senate Statement on PBS Funding (transcript)
Wasn’t Powell on the court too? It’s well known that Powells are shabbos goyim.
Can someone explain what this paragraph is supposed to mean?
People take Jews very seriously.
Well, it’s more complicated than that. If I had an interlocutor of good will and intellectual integrity, it would be worth while pursuing the conversation.
Lewis Powell and William Rehnquist were added around the end of 1971. Their predecessors were quite ill in the latter part of the year.
You don’t think it owed anything at all to the top eight contributors to Biden’s election campaign all being Jews?
‘Hired on merit.’ You’re that impressed with the Biden administration?
Well, at one point…
https://colinwrightssite.wordpress.com/2020/12/08/bidens-cabinet/
Perhaps we could limit to the ~70% of Jews voting Democratic?
Or the 50% of donations to the Democratic party?
https://www.jpost.com/us-elections/us-jews-contribute-half-of-all-donations-to-the-democratic-party-468774
Or maybe just the Jews in the Biden administration?
https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jews-in-the-biden-administration
I am sure all of those groups are punching well above their weight and not *against* disparate impact.
For the justices you skipped Hugo Black and John M. Harlan II.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griggs_v._Duke_Power_Co.
The same way Roe v. Wade wasn’t going anywhere?
Ford learned a lesson watching John Dean in action.
Don’t they account for a significant share of donations to the Republican Party, too, or at least did before Trump?
Jewish donors expect both parties to support Israel unconditionally. You can consider them the Jewish establishment.
It is a fantastic return on investment (ROI). Jews give a few million to US politicians every couple of years and the US government kicks back $5 billion every year in direct “aid,” and billions more in indirect “aid,” and puts the American military with its $800 billion/year budget at the service of Zionism.
Communist hostility to all religion was a founding feature—“opiate of the masses.”
It wasn’t just the Soviets and Eastern Europe: China went after Buddhism (and the few Christians in the country).
Last time I looked it wasn’t illegal to vote Democrat. If 70/30 is bad, what does that make blacks?
Feel free to bring a test case to overturn Griggs. Good luck.
We hate to interrupt this rather amusing flame war, but I fear that I gotta stop because I just got a phone call from an old friend, and an old colleague of mine’s son just got killed in a random hit-and-run accident. Nous sommes a tout-a-fait desolees.
Y’know, I was watching old re-runs of that old show “ER” and it was giving me acid flashbacks from my days back working in ERs which were kind of spookily similar, full of madness and human tragedy one minute to the next — but now I’m just having what little of my hair is left turning white, from this terrible real-life news. I don’t know what to think or say. Sorry: I’ll get back to you with a clever reply in maybe, I dunno, a thousand years or so.
Please tell me you’re joking.
This level of naivety
is music to the ears of the Establishment.
That’s the old thinking, and there was merit to it a while ago (though I may take your advice on the divorce case if it ever happens, which is looking increasingly unlikely). In a mature society of adults like the fifties, sure,
Seems to me now, though, the way forward is to organize as a group and demand rights in exchange for votes. Whites are starting to do it, why not men?
“In yet another outrage against established norms, today Donald Trump …”
The host of the no longer updated Lion of the Blogosphere site, an attorney, frequently made the point that the impact of Griggs was that it gave employers cover to do what PTB wanted them to do anyway and that it isn’t as controlling over employer behavior as often presented. He made a compelling argument. Griggs itself does not explain the employment practice changes that occurred it its wake as legal obligations.
The main thing is that we are running out of white people, whether people here like it or not. Corporate America and Big Government could not have kept an all white male work force whether they wanted to or not, because there are just not enough white men to go around. Even if you lure whites with higher pay you can’t magically create people who don’t exist. Non-elite colleges cannot enroll white students who do not exist. You either diversify or your school will be half empty.
The only other solution is robots. In addition to its human work force, Amazon now employs 750,000 robots in its warehouses.
OK, sure. There are many. This is very well known and understood in the Yiddish community even if it comes as a surprise to you.
https://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/05/opinion/jewish-identity-spelled-in-yiddish.html
There are entire scholarly books devoted to Soviet Yiddish and its hostility to the Jewish religion, which are not available online and which I am sure you are not really interested in reading anyway.
I realize that this does not conform with the Men of Unz narrative that Bolsheviks were all dirty Jews who were out to “drown the goyim” to coin a phrase, while cutting their brethren a break, but in reality Bolshevism (even/especially) when implemented by Bolsheviks of Jewish origin) was hostile to ALL religious worship, including Jewish worship.
Alas, poor Yorick. Keep it together and be a good friend to your friend. The rest of us Men (and Women) of Unz will still be here.
“In the midst of life we are in debt 💀 et cetera.”
Would you please elaborate or provide a link? Thanks.
I find it interesting that the term Men of Unz, which was originally pejorative, is now descriptive.
I find it especially interesting how its usage has evolved. Originally, the expression was coined by a woman poster who seemed a bit put off by (perhaps) what she may have perceived to be misogyny. (At least that’s my interpretation, I’m not pretending to speak for Alden.)
But more recently, the term “men of Unz” has been adopted by Jack D., apparently a Jewish man, but in a way NOT to include himself. It brings to mind a book by Kevin MacDonald: A People That Shall Dwell Alone: Judaism as a Group Evolutionary Strategy, with Diaspora Peoples
That it is an essential feature of functioning societies that duties dominate decision making on both personal and societal levels. Rights matter but constitute a minuscule fraction of necessary social habits needed to maintain civilization. It is a profound insight that Reg is sharing and corresponds closely to the importance of tradition in functioning societies and further points to the war on tradition for the past 60 years as the chief element of our current social decline.
Here’s an early post, of many, where he makes the above mentioned point about the general public confusing Griggs (not particularly important for white collar hiring) as compared to ELITE preferences, very important for white collar hiring. Type “Griggs” into his search engine and you can find many years worth of commentary.
I’m sorry to hear of your friend’s son’s death. Truly awful. Nothing worse for a parent.
Yes, that would be more accurate, for the reasons you mentioned. Maybe our station manager wanted us to feel bigger than were were.
Thank you for your reply. This is late, I guess, but I like hearing about your experience.
Well, I guess I just don’t know.
I’ve lived with that haunting thought every day of my life for almost half a century now.
I sincerely hope you are as much better than me as your reply (and others) implies. I hope this, because I should not wish my horrible, internal suffering and disappointment on anyone, although you seem to deserve it at this moment.
Have you considered the value of the actual subjects — what can be learned, experienced, and shared — rather than just winning another point on the intardnet against an aging man?
Congratulations, anyway. I guess that’s what you need.?
LOL, “Dass was fired from Harvard for…”
And since when has being fired from Harvard ever mattered here? If anything, it is an honor!
Heretics! OMG. Heretics! Do YOU want HARVARD to be YOUR judge of what a heretic is?
For someone whom we here think is free, you seem to be sort of trapped into judging, for your arguments’ sake at least, on the basis of exactly what the powers that be want you to think.
You used to be better than that.
Academics are the real racists!
Deuteronomy 20:8 exempts the chicken from conscription. Eddie Slovik should have used that in his defense.
Forget about Non-elite colleges. Here in Oregon, schools are closing due to falling enrollment.

So in your telling Bolshevism was more the Jewish equivalent of Nazism regarding its approach to religion. Of course, that’s not your position. Your position is that Jews are innocent of any murderous program they might impose or help impose on ethnic outsiders. We know that, you contend, because they viewed religious Jews with some hostility. Imagining, I guess, that secular Jews can’t be guilty of murderous ethnocentrism the way secular Germans can be guilty of such a thing?
So tell us, Bolsheviks made a point of murdering Catholic priests, particularly during the Spanish Civil War. They also made a point of stealing Catholic religious icons, crucifying Catholic clerics and closing churches. How many Rabbis did the Bolsheviks murder and how many Synagogues did Bolsheviks loot and close?
“Oh, I agree. The right has a human capital problem in large part because the left controls all the organs of culture; smart conservatives go into the private sector where they can make money rather than fighting a losing game”
You are completely wrong about this, but this is a stupid point that conservatives insist on. Something along the lines of:
“Sure, the Libs have the academic and media elites, but we have the economic elites.”
But you don’t have the economic elites. In fact, a lot of the families that vote Democrat today used to vote Republican in the past. Case in point: Warren Buffet’s dad was a staunch Republican, and Warren himself voted Republican when he was a young man back in the 1950’s. Now, he’s one of the biggest supporters and donors of the Democrat Party.
What happened is that the old elite of the Republican Party and millionf of their voters were never “conservative” in the way that the word is used today. They were wealthy, yes, but wealthy does not = conservative.
The old elite of the Republican Party were people like Henry Cabot Lodge and William McKinley. They were not “conservative” in the way that the word is used today. For instance, Henry Cabot Lodge voted to support the voting rights of African-Americans. Back in the 1890’s, that made you *extremely* progresive.
Likewise, the “classic” Republican voter, the kind of man that voted for Nixon, was basically a wealthy Northerner/Yankee man that Center to Center-Right on economics and supported limited government and low taxes for businesses. HOWEVER(big however), they were Center-Left on *social* issues. In fact, it was these business executives from Northern coporations that helped to end racial segregation in the south, because in the 1950’s, the big corporations of the north started to create franchises in the south and to send thir executives with their families to live there, and they were disgusted by racism.
People forget that it was the Republican Party that led the North in the war against slavery, and that it was the Republican Party that orgiginally supported universal suffrage.
There are millions of families in today’s “Blue” states that voted Republican back in the 1950’s, and now they vote Democrat. Why? Because the Republican Party has gone too far to the right when it comes to *Society* .
In what are known as “Blue” states, there was never any true conservative movement. Conservatism, as we understand it, was always associated with the southern part of the U.S and what today we call “Red” states.
In the past, in what today are “Blue” states, the big division was between the moderate liberals, represented by the Republican Party, that favored business-friendly policies and believed that huge government programs are ineffective because government is wasteful, and the progressives that wanted vast economic reform.
BUT…they were all Libs. They all agreed with the basic foundations of Center-Left ideology, such as separation of Church and State, universal equality before the law and that racism is disgusting, and women’s right to vote and own property.
These millions of people that voted Republican upt o 1960, especially in what are known as “Blue” states, migrated to the Democrat Party because they were never genuine conservatives, and now the Republican Party is a genuinelly conservative party. In a nutshell:
*The old Republican voters and the elite of the GOP were mostly wealthy and educated white Libs, and their departure to the Democrat Party left the conservative movement crippled to death, especially intellctually*
Steve Sailer doesn’t understand that the path to a more traditional, conservative America is by winning back a large fraction of the white Lib population that voted Republican up to the early 1960’s. And the way that you do that is by moderating your speech on social issues.
I am not talking here about Antifa or radical progressives. I am talking about the millions of white people that are Center-Left on social issues, but believe that government should’t legislate about people’s private lives, that we should have equality of opportunity but not of outcomes, that the very poor can be taken care by private charities, that the police needs to maintain public safety, and that little children should not be exposed to sexual material in schools.
For instance, the poeple that shot down “Critical Race Theory” being taught to their kids were not conservativs, but influential white Lib lawyers, media and academic people that vote Democrat but thought that teaching their kids that they are evil just because they are white is morally wrong. Likewise, wealthy and educated white Libs in Manhattan, who vote Democrat, supported tougher laws on criminals and more police.
Liberals represent the vast, vast majority of the educated, professional, influential segments of the white population. You CANNOT have a successful conservative movement that does not have at least a part of the white liberal population supporting it.
No white Libs –> no possible conservative movement succes in America.
On the political spectrum, Libs are Center-Left, but they are a LOT more to the Right or “conservative” than progressives or Marxists.
The choice that the conservative movement in America has is to moderate it’s speech on *social* issues to win over part of the white Lib population and make America a more conservative albeit Center/Center-Left country, OR insist on radical conservatism and lose, lose, lose and lose more.
You can get white Libs on issues such as border security, more policing, lesss immigration, and banning transgendered teaching at shcools. But the moment that you start saying things such as black people are genetically stupid and violent, or that gays are disgusting and should be shoved back into the closet, or that women should be barred from being anything other than mothers and housewives, you lose the white liberals. That is way to the Right politically for their taste.
Moderate the discourse on social issues to win over white Libs and you can get a more conservative America. Insist on Sarah Pallin, Michelle Bachman and Rick Santorum-style conservatism, and you will get a more progressive country each year, since the white libs will stick to the progressives.
Win over the white Libs with a more moderate speech and make them turn on the Progressives and the conservative movement wins; insist on hardcore conservatism, and America will become more and more like San Francisco or Cuba. The choice is yours.
From Wikipedia.
—Already by the middle of the month there were pogroms in Bratslav, combined with looting and arson. On 20 January in Kiev, during the fights between Ukrainian nationalist and Soviet forces, over a hundred Jews were killed and Jewish shops were plundered.[26] Ukrainian nationalists arrested members of the First All Russian Congress of Jewish Fighters, and shot an organizer for the Ukrainian Union of Jewish Fighters, I. Gogol.[26]
Photo of the “White Flower” sanatorium, which sheltered Jews from antisemitic Red Army soldiers.
In some cases, the communists saw the Jewish community as the bourgeoisie, their class enemies. During the withdrawal of Red Army from Chernihiv province in the spring of 1918, the Red Army, motivated by “fighting against the bourgeoisie”, committed pogroms against Jews. Retreating Soviet forces are believed to have been responsible for a brutal 7-8 March pogrom in Chernihiv and Hlukhiv, where about 400 Jewish residents, including many children, were murdered within two days.[27] During the civil war period, Bolsheviks are estimated to have been responsible for 9% of pogroms, White movement forces for 17%, Ukrainian nationalists for 50%, and unaffiliated groups for the remainder.[28]—

So we can reasonably assume rabbis were killed and synagogues were burned even though exact numbers are vague.
This is nonsense. There are two hundred million white people here — and we’re running out?
However did we get by when there were only a hundred million? Twenty five million?
Obviously, it’s a matter of incentives and distribution. If you have the economy arranged a certain way, you will always be ‘running out’ of workers no matter how large the population.
Right now we have a population of three hundred and fifty million — and yet you would argue we need more.
Just how many would be enough? What if it gets to be a billion and you still can’t get Rosa to clean your toilet for a low enough wage? We’ll need more immigrants, I suppose.
Right. Look, either do it yourself or pay someone forty dollars an hour to do it. This is supposed to be an affluent, egalitarian country — not JackD’s personal paradise.
A funny thing about that is I think Jack would be a “man of Unz” per Alden. As someone who promotes a “rational” view when discussing examples of crimes against women (alternatively, female behavior gone bad). Perhaps she (I’m pretty sure that comes from Mrs. Alden) could comment.
Ooops, this wasn’t the answer that Curlie was looking for. The important thing is that Joos are Bolsheviks and all Bolsheviks are Jews. Please stay on point and don’t disrupt Curlie’s narrrative. Stop confusing him with facts. Facts are a dime a dozen but a narrative is precious because it allows you to see the world with perfect clarity.
You copy as if it were significant the following: “Already by the middle of the month there were pogroms . . . “. [[care to identify the culprits and the damage done?]]
You copy as if it were significant the following. “[D]uring the fights between Ukrainian nationalist and Soviet forces, over a hundred Jews were killed and Jewish shops were plundered. . . . “[[Wow! I wonder how many French people were killed in the cross fire fighting between Allied and Axis forces??]]. Do French deaths prove that the Allies were anti-French?
You go on to say by copying: “Ukrainian nationalists arrested members of the First All Russian Congress of Jewish Fighters, and shot an organizer for the Ukrainian Union of Jewish Fighters, I. Gogol.[26].” [[Including this is just bizarre. Are you contending that Ukrainian nationalists were Bolsheviks?]].
Given that bizarre claims are your stock in trade, nevertheless, this one is remarkable even for you. Look you exclaim: proof the Bolsheviks weren’t over heavy with Jews; some noncombatant Jews died at the hands of Ukrainians!
Hooray, you’ve really outdone yourself.
Why you mad, bro?
Yes, I understand one of the sources is Wikipedia, but it offers facts. So specifically challenge their veracity.
You provided no facts establishing any claim you may be trying to assert.
The earth revolves around the sun is a fact. But, like the information you provided that fact has no relevance towards establishing or even suggesting that Jews were the victims of intentional or unintentionally hostility by Bolshevik forces. Which, in that characteristic half-wit way of yours, you infer from the irrelevant blather you posted.
Nothing you provided even suggests that Soviet Bolsheviks intentionally targeted Jews. Some elements or renegade factions may have gone rogue but you didn’t provide anything supporting even that claim. You wrote about Jews and Ukrainian nationalists as if the Ukrainian nationalists were on Team Bolshevik. I’ve seen some incredibly dumb comments from you over the years but this may take the prize for dumbest of all.
I was simplifying a bit, but Ashurit developed from Ivrit and the Ivrit forms are clearly closer to the final forms in most cases, and as it developed into Ashurit (and there are many intermediate stages, of course) the letters started “closing up”. There’s one example of a final mem in the middle of a word in the Bible (Isaiah 9:6) that may be an artifact of this.
“Nothing you provided even suggests that Soviet Bolsheviks intentionally targeted Jews”
Yes, they did. But it’s extremely complex.

—The consequences of this soon became apparent. As early as February 1919, internal Bolshevik reports began to note the depth of antisemitism in various units and divisions of the Red Army.30 By early April, reports indicated that Red Army divisions in Ukraine were composed of troops formerly attached to the army of the Ukrainian Directory. Needless to say, such divisions were plagued by antisemitism.31 On April 5, Podvoiskii gave a stark assessment of the situation facing the Bolsheviks: “we have, to our own detriment, absorbed not only counterrevolutionaries, not only White Guard scum, but even more so the masses of poor peasants [bedniakov]… who, having been mobilized previously by the counterrevolution, have fled that camp and now joined ours.”32 In sum, antisemitism had its basis in the overwhelmingly partisan composition of the Red Army in Ukraine; the worldview of the Bolsheviks’ social base contrasted sharply with that of the Party leadership.33
Throughout March and April, the fragility of Soviet rule was cruelly exposed as various Red Army units rose up against the Bolsheviks. Ostensibly under the control of Red Army Commander Antonov-Ovseenko, these rebel units were, in actuality, loyal to their charismatic, independently minded leaders: otamany, self-styled warlords, who frequently changed sides in the civil war.34 According to the head of the Ukrainian Soviet government, Khristian Rakovskii, between April 1 and May 1, at least 93 uprisings occurred within the ranks of the Soviet Ukrainian Army.35 As they attacked buildings where soviets convened and shot Cheka agents, these rebels called for a “soviet rule” in its populist sense, that is, local self-government without communes, without grain requisitioning, without “Communists” and, above all, without “Jews.” The uprisings revealed the extraordinary confluence between radical politics, Ukrainian nationalism, and antisemitism. Most threatening of all was the Grigor’evshchina of May 1919, the rebellion of Red Army units under the control of Nikifor Grigor’ev.36–

I used to have a job which required me to get up really early in the morning, like pre-dawn. So I placed my alarm-clock radio on the opposite side of the bedroom and set it to NPR, because the sounds of these smug exasperating ghouls were so infuriating that I had to leap out of bed, abandoning the blankets and my warm cuddly gf and skittling desperately across the freezing room to turn the damn hellish thing off. OK, good, now out of bed — off to work.
So NPR managed to contribute at least a teensy bit to real-world productivity.
Otherwise, just boil them all alive in boiling horse-piss.
Well, that didn’t take long. . . .
