University of Michigan investigating after noose found at employee’s desk

(CNN) University of Michigan police are investigating after a noose was found on an employee’s desk at a university hospital.
The university has “taken immediate action” to investigate the incident that occurred Thursday as an act of discrimination and criminal ethnic intimidation, said Dr. Marschall S. Runge, the dean of the University of Michigan Medical School.
“This act of hate violates all of the values that we hold dear and will not be tolerated,” Runge said in a statement, calling the noose a “symbol of hate and discrimination.”
As I’ve long pointed out, perhaps the surest tell of some kind of Hate Hoax or Hate Hypochondria is a noose.

ANN ARBOR, MI – A rope resembling a noose found inside University Hospital was not the result of a hate crime, but a practice knot used in fishing, University of Michigan police have found.
An investigation by UM’s Division of Public Safety and Security concluded the spool rope used for medical procedures was being used by a person on a break to practice tying a “Uni Knot,” which is a type of knot used for fishing. After the spool was returned to the storage area, the knot was still in place and discovered the following day by an employee. …
After the initial report, the incident was described as “a symbol of hate and discrimination” by Marschall Runge, executive vice president for medical affairs and dean of the UM Medical School.
Based on multiple witness interviews and other evidence, however, UM police do not believe that the incident was a hate crime.
For the umpteenth time, the local cops come out of a Hate Hysteria episode looking saner than the Great and the Good, such as, in this case, the dean of the University of Michigan medical school.
Update: So far, the retraction only seems to be on Michigan Live. We’ll see whether or not this new noose news goes national…

I was quite surprised when the Head of Department of a fairly prestigious university tried to shake me down for a few hundred dollars contribution to a fund I’d never heard of before because it “opened so many doors”. Chinese guy, but the rest of the administration was about the same. I found little more than gangster style intimidation in university administration, in fact. Again, the point isn’t that they were gangsters (they weren’t — no balls if you’ll pardon the phrase), but that they sounded and acted as if they reported to gangsters, or were in a reporting chain controlled and policed by gangsters.

Boy Scouts are/were (I haven’t kept up) also expected to learn many knots: square knot, taut line hitch, slip knot, two-half hitches, bowline, etc. I guess many of these would constitute a noose today.

I’ve worked back stage at theatres. At least some of the roadies/stage hands in any crew would know a few knots like these.

Local news in Atlanta covered a story at a nearby university off-campus apartment (Kennesaw State University), in which the presence of a rope on an apartment balcony triggered all the snowflakes to wet their pants. We had helped a friend’s son move into that apartment complex just a few months earlier. The place has NO ELEVATOR. I can’t tell you how many fathers made the comment that we should just throw a rope over the balcony to pull up the stuff we were carrying up the long flights of stairs. Noose found at Stanford too
Stanford police responded to reports of a noose on campus over the weekend and found a 3-foot long white rope, with a loop at one end, suspended from a tall bush near a residence for summer students. There is an active investigation into the “suspicious circumstance,” which “may be re-classified as a hate crime,” wrote University Communications in a statement to The Daily.
“While we await further conclusions from the investigation, we feel it is important to state that a noose is recognized as a symbol of violence and racism directed against African American peoples,” the University wrote. “Such a symbol has no place on our campus.”
