The journalists’ union at the New York Times, The News Guild of New York, has issued a report showing that black and Hispanic employees of the NYT do lousier work on average than Asians, who lag behind whites.
Racial Disparities in Performance Evaluations at The New York Times
Aug. 23, 2022The New York Times’s performance review system has for years given significantly lower ratings to employees of color, an analysis by Times journalists in the NewsGuild shows.
The analysis, which relied on data provided by the company on performance ratings for all Guild-represented employees, found that in 2021, being Hispanic reduced the odds of receiving a high score by about 60 percent, and being Black cut the chances of high scores by nearly 50 percent. Asians were also less likely than white employees to get high scores.
In 2020, zero Black employees received the highest rating, while white employees accounted for more than 90 percent of the roughly 50 people who received the top score.
The disparities have been statistically significant in every year for which the company provided data, according to the journalists’ study, which was reviewed by several leading academic economists and statisticians, as well as performance evaluation experts.
Performance ratings have a direct impact on employees’ paychecks and career opportunities. In 2021, the company used the scores in determining the size of Guild members’ bonuses. Guild members who believed their contributions weren’t fairly rated in the review process have said they feel demoralized and alienated — a pernicious outcome as The Times attempts to recruit and retain a diverse workforce. Management has denied the discrepancies in the performance ratings for nearly two years, time it could have instead spent trying to make the system better for everyone.
The performance rating system has changed over time, and the precise nature of the racial disparities has varied somewhat from year to year. But what has remained consistent is that white Guild members, on average, receive higher ratings than their colleagues of color. These findings showed up under a variety of different methodological approaches, including those suggested by the company itself.
Personally, I found that NYT Staffer of Intersectionality Maya Phillips’ theater page article about the hair styles of all six black women in London definitely exceeded even my high expectations for how many irrelevant references to hair a black woman can cram into an an related article!
Seriously, the Occam’s Razor explanation is that that’s what you get with different distributions, especially when you do affirmative action hiring. It’s the Sisyphean nature of diversity programs: you congratulate yourself for hiring more blacks by scraping the bottom of the black barrel harder, but then it turns out that your black hires perform worse on the job on average, so you get accused of racism all over again. Rinse and repeat at ever higher levels.
But, of course, the New York Times wouldn’t allow itself to point out that obvious logic. The pervasive racial average IQ gap is Occam’s Skeleton Key for understanding so many 2022 headlines, but its existence is also the most verboten fact of 2022.

I’m sure every person here who’s worked in corporate America knows exactly how to fix this.
In the company I worked for we had a model. At review time the GM who ran our division had an all managers meeting and if you wanted your guys to be above the model you had to make the case and fight for ’em. And some other manager would have to take the hit. (And, yeah there was score keeping.) But we did move it around to make sure people who’d really kicked ass that term were not cheated. (But those same people might have to take a hit next time–after being newly promoted.) I’m sure a bunch of folks here have played this same sort of game at their job.
This is actually much, much easier. Everybody gets their rating. Then the NYT can run the model, figure out the racial adjustment so every race comes out the same–and that’s your official number for salary and bonus. You can actually give people both numbers so everyone will be happy.

No, Wokeism is an extremely effective strategy for removing non-Jewish Whites from positions of prominence in society. This has already happened in the Ivy League and it is now infiltrating elite corporate America. There is no downside to DIE if every corporation is required by the government, advertisers and investors to pursue the policy. Since the biggest equity owners of most large corporations are Blackrock and Vanguard, investment funds dedicated to Wokeism in all aspects of corporate governance, there is basically no alternative. Here’s a simple test of the ideas of these two erstwhile (((patriots))).
Instead of “the constitution”, substitute “the Civil Rights Act” — another old, holy document that is carved in stone — and apply the exact same theoretical arguments. Drink a shot every time one of them has an aneurysm and cries Racist! instead of addressing their own modes and motives of argumentation.
btw, their argument to revert to the earlier conception of constitutionalism would actually be conceivable in a small ethnically and religiously homogeneous country of 4 to 8 million, no larger. A friend brought up in a meeting that what the new graph showed was that the company was full of just “average” employees and not expectational employees.

It’s interesting that this doesn’t conform to the normal Asian > white > Hispanic > black pattern. And, in fact, it matches the pattern I noticed in high-tech companies, where East Asians didn’t outperform whites in a field (software engineering) where you’d expect them to excel. Don’t get me wrong — Asians were usually very good. But generally the really high performers were white guys.
There are a few hypotheses I’ve heard over the years, but my impression is that it was a real effect, and not just a personality or cultural thing. That is, East Asian software engineers were very good on technical merit, but did not routinely write transformative or especially elegant code. Very few East Asians that I knew were passionate about writing software; perhaps that’s a factor.
South Asian engineers were often good. But it was not rare that they would also have forceful personalities, such that they were overrepresented in leadership and management positions. I think there’s a lot of overlap with Jewish personality traits in this regard.
The white guys were the ones most likely to really be into programming for its own sake, rather than as a means to a good career. That is, the ones that would go home and work on their pet programming projects.
I’ve often wondered why white societies do so well, given that our IQs are good but not world-class. Perhaps passion plays a role.
Parkinson’s law applies to normal work situations. It is not to be confused with what was once called “featherbedding”.

Sailer admitted years ago to being half-Ashkenazi genetically on his personal website. He won’t mention it on here currently, and tends to hold comments that point it out in a long “moderation” period (wherein posts composed long after appear long before such a comment) and/or outright vandalizes posts that point this out by removing the specific paragraphs that mention that ancestry (as he has done to me).

As it happens, I myself have some experience with Dominicans, namely a drug-dealing, obsessed stalker who has been harassing me for ten years. Since he is the only Dominican I’ve ever known, I have hesitated to draw conclusions. But judging by his behavior, I wouldn’t doubt anything you’ve said about them. He’s one of the very black ones, BTW.
