Writing instructors long told students to use verbs in the active voice rather than in the passive voice when possible. But the needs of the The Narrative are far more important than such petty stylistic concerns when the goal is to pin the blame on the gun, as in Chicago, rather than the shooter of the gun, as in El Paso. … On Monday morning, Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department, tweeted a nearly minute-long audio recording of rapid gunfire from a shooting on the West Side on Sunday.
“Below is the sound that Chicago needs to change its ways on how we handle gun offenders,” he wrote. “Audio from the tragic shooting at 18th & Kildare yesterday shows that criminals have no deterrent to carrying illegal guns in our city and this is what residents and police are up against.”

He has a number of core ideas, issues, and beats that he pays a lot of attention to because he has something original to say and the courage to notice and talk about things outside the Overton window relating to those beats. And there are other issues where if he commented he would not be adding value. For instance, Steve has not shown much interest in gun control or Second Amendment issues, and in the rare instance he has he's come at it from a unique angle, such as his "dirt gap" theory.

I know the stats are out there on HeyJackass, Second City cop(?) etc, but I’m gonna guess that shootings/killings of black by other blacks in that one city are higher than those of these mass shooters by a factor of 10 to 20. It’s just that nobody cares as much about the shootings in the hood. Once in a while there is a terrible tragic case of some little kid being caught in the crossfire, and we hear about it for a bit. I feel bad for the good decent black people who have to live there… because, well, they are often the parents or grandparents of the perps.

Amazing how the major news outlets seem fairly uninterested in some in-depth reporting on who is most likely to commit a mass shooting and in what locations these most often occur. So I asked if they would support greatly enhancing penalties for use of a firearm in the commission of a crime or possessing an illegal weapon - of course they would! Next I asked who did they imagine would mostly be sent off to jail as a result of that policy, and it was just a bunch of quiet stares. I then suggested that if they were sincere that they immediately write their legislators (we live in a major city, so guess the party) and share the ideas we discussed, and it was back to 'well, we should ban assault weapons.' How many people were killed in our city with an assault rifle last year? Again, dead silence.

If you want a sample, go to the website that tracks Chicago homicides, called Heyjackass.com, and as you peruse the details of each shooting and killing, notice the number of shootings that happen at the same time and place. Each of those is a mass shooting. There is a map showing the locations. I can personally attest, and you can easily find on the internet, that these are black neighborhoods.

See the number and compare the lethality of head versus abdomen shots (as well as the number of groin shots). This is the culture of Chicago gun violence (2019), 84.2% black victims (only 4.1% white) and an arrest (alleged perpetrator charged) rate of 9.5%.

A number of years ago, I spent an hour or so looking at the use of passive voice in crime reports because of feminist claims about how the use of passive voice to reports of rapes is somehow part of a patriarchal conspiracy to diminish responsibility of rapists. What I found, unsurprisingly, is that passive voice is very common in crime reports of all sorts.
For example: "Mr. X, a 36-year old school teacher, was shot by an unidentified assailant on Friday," seem like a pretty reasonable way to structure a crime blotter sentence.
If only we banned AR-15s and had stronger gun control (while eliminating racist stop and frisk policies) these killings would stop.

I just finished reading Caitlin Flanagan’s review of Quentin Tarantino’s Once upon a Time in Hollywood in The Atlantic. I had kind of skimmed a little of it before, but was put off of reading it closely by the tendentious title, “Tarntino’s Most Transgressive Film Celebrates Values that Have been Repeatedly Dismissed as Dangerous and Outdated.” The subeditor really had to stretch to find the paragraph from which to, out-of-context, pull that title.
The review is really a work of art, very well written, and rather than dissing the movie as transgressive, it puts SJW critics of the movie in their place. It’s a wonderful bookend to Steve’s review from another sympathetic California native.

And look at the fate of “stop and frisk” in NYC. It really did help bring down gun crime but was phased out as soon as progressives retook control. Too much “disparate impact,” you know.

Sure, but the President (who partly campaigned on protecting the right to bear arms) totally voluntarily collapsed on legalized swatting (red flag laws) and on the demonization project to defame him and his supproters as supremacists. When that happens leftist apathy is not reassuring.

One obvious reason not to specify in the story who shot all those people in Chicago is because we don’t have one single suspect. Many shootings will simply go unsolved, and the failure of police to stop the shootings will mean possible retaliatory violence and more guys carrying guns in case they run into come across other guys carrying guns. The NYPD managed to drop their murder rate by flooding dangerous areas with lots of cops and aggressively going after violence (drug dealers now act like pizza deliverymen, without having to fight over turf). Now that Manhattanites no longer have much fear of such violence, there are now complaints that the legal system is unfair to guys caught illegally carrying, correctly pointing out that existing violence incentivizes arming yourself but not “solving for the equilibrium” of what the effect of legal reforms would be.
On the other hand, we have a study showing that deer season causes a huge jump in the carrying of rifles but zero effect on violence, because despite the well-publicized mass shootings, rifles are responsible for fewer homicides than fists.

Good job Dayton cops. Real cops. Yeah, look at them. In uniform with pinned badges and handguns taking out this shooter in under a minute. Compare to the El Paso shooting with cops in camo dressed up like special forces, replete with night vision goggles and headsets on their helmets.
