Ever since I blogged about the acclaim for the new novel The Last White Man by Mohsin Hamid earlier this month, it has been getting a lot of comment on line from the right. But it doesn’t look like many have actually read it, so I read it. And here’s my review:

As antiwhite racism has become more respectable, use of the word “whiteness,” which is increasingly employed as an ethnic slur, has sextupled in frequency in books published in America since the first era of political correctness began in the late 1980s.
While calls to “Abolish the White Race” may sound alarmingly genocidal, advocates of defaming, deconstructing, dismantling, and destroying the white race, on the rare occasions when challenged, tend to respond that they don’t mean doing violence to the white race, which, science has proven, doesn’t exist biologically, just to “whiteness,” which is totally different from white people (who don’t exist).
In the current mindset, “whiteness” represents everything you deserve to resent about white people—their home equity, their accomplished ancestors, their fair skin, their silky hair, their genes, and all those other social constructs. But you shouldn’t be accused of exactly hating white human beings themselves (who, as Ta-Nahisi Coates would always point out, are really only “people who think they are white”), just their whiteness.
Yes, I know that doesn’t seem to make much sense, but that just proves how you didn’t go to grad school.
This summer, a prominent literary novelist born in Pakistan, Mohsin Hamid, has published a much-acclaimed fantasy looking forward to the (almost completely nonviolent) extinction of the white race, The Last White Man, that exemplifies contemporary antiwhiteness thought at its least hate-filled.

This was already done as a movie called Watermelon Man. The 1970 film was written by Herman Raucher, it tells the story of a bigoted white insurance salesman who wakes up one morning to find that he has become Black. The premise for the film was inspired by Kafka’s Metamorphosis, and by John Howard Griffin’s autobiographical Black Like Me. Godfrey Cambridge plays the role in whiteface for the first few minutes of the film, and then goes without the makeup when his character changes into a black man.

Here is the fact of the matter. Most white people make their own decisions about race and culture. They do not think they will be murdered out of existence or be reduced to Planet of the Apes status. We befriend and date and mate outside of our race. Not because we have been brainwashed by Jews, but rather because we critically think about the world around us and our place in it. And a young generation ages 13 to 25 understand race and culture in clear, concise terms based upon their experiences and discussions of those experiences.

A much more interesting premise would involve voluntary race switching. For example, what if they invented a pill that turned you into whatever race you wanted temporarily. How many blacks would switch to white? Would they chose to stay that way all or most of the time, or just occasionally? Would it solve all their perceived problems in life?
Would white wokesters turn black for political solidarity and to destroy "whiteness"? Would wiggers and rednecks go black just to party it up and have more fun? Maybe the longer you stayed race-switched, the more you absorb the non-cosmetic racial traits as your "true self." (The trans-whites would start talking in a honky voice and showing up to work on time; the trans-blacks would start stabbing anyone who stepped on their shoes, or whatever).
Maybe everyone ends up choosing white, which totally ruins the brand. So the original whites (OWs) all secretly agree to switch to Samoan or something so they can keep themselves separate, and then that becomes the new high-status race. And everyone starts bitching about "Samoan-ness."
Dr. Seuss did a rough first draft of this premise with his story about the Star-Bellied Sneetches.

I didn't read your column. When I click on the link, the TakiMag website now covers up the text with two overlapping advertisements, both requiring me to close them using tiny, hard-to-see "X" buttons.
When I find websites that do this, I simply leave. I won't read another TakiMag article unless they stop that nonsense. Maybe you can tell their managing editor.

One suspects the idea of pigmentation as an adaptation to UV exposure is unknown to most book reviewers.
They do know, but can’t say, that white countries are nicer than brown and black ones.
The "adaption" is not having pigmented skin.
One theory is that this was to allow white people to make more Vitamin D in cloudy northern climates.
Another theory is that white skin is a form of sexual selection like peacock feathers (or large breasts on human females) because fairness is a sign of youth/fertility. We've also seen people like black cops become white - one of the four evil racist Minneapolis cops who racistly murdered George Floyd was a light skinned "black body" as the sage Tennessee Coates would put it (together with one Hmong of all things). But his occupation made him "white adjacent" and a participant in a "white supremacist system" so he was racist against a black guy despite being black himself. If you ask "should we fire all black cops then?" the answer is no, at least not until you get rid of them all. In his moment of truth, which you may have thought was a routine low level arrest met with disproportionate resistance (you would, of course, be wrong), Officer Kueng sought the safety and prestige of whiteness in siding with his colleagues by participation in the destruction of Floyd's black body. A reverse transubstantiation occurred here from black to white, so it's not accurate to say "hey, wasn't one of the cops you're accusing of racism black and another Hmong, does this sound like racism to you?" This is silly because Kueng and Thao lost their BIPOC status magically in that instant so they're white now. It's a shame they couldn't apply for loans without collateral or credit after becoming white but before getting charged with murder - it's one of the perks of whiteness that other white people just give you money without reasonable assurances of repayment. You may have come to suspect that "white" is just a ruling class synonym for "bad, evil, or cruel," and "black" is just a synonym for "good, innocent, or valuable" and that the question is therefore "who has the power to apply these labels and spin narratives out of contrary facts?," but that's your whiteness talking! An even more literal adaptation of Kafka’s work was the plot of District 9 where the Afrikaans policeman tasked with policing the enclave of insectoid aliens who’ve landed in Johannesburg begins to transform into one.
What’s funny about District 9 is that it takes place after apartheid but was still solely taken by Western critics to be a metaphor about apartheid but the originally short film makes it very clear the original premise was for the aliens to be an allegory for the masses of immigrants, almost entirely illegal, who flooded into big South African cities from Zimbabwe, Nigeria and even other places after 1994. Shockingly ‘racial nationalism’ isn’t really a thing, nationalism is and the local black populations who were still living in shocking poverty didn’t appreciate these dynamic newcomers composed mostly of shiftless young men speaking alien languages who made their lives even harder.
In the original short film Blomkamp made this is more clear with the aliens even wearing hoodies and having their lines cribbed from what you’d expect a shiftless illegal immigrant to say. Among the pox pops of people talking about the aliens there is at least one that isn’t acted and is from a woman talking about the immigrants. Indeed it seems clear that his vision in Elysium is based on these massive movements of people living in shanty towns is inspired by this. (Actually almost all of his work is about the apocalyptic destruction of Earth by invaders or the degradation of society, makes you think…) But Western audiences didn’t get the metaphor in District 9 and thought it was about apartheid. I guess he had to be more direct with Elysium.
The bulk of this was due to the archaic open border left by the ANC as a sop to the ZPF and Robert Mugabe for his support over many years. It’s only in 2022 that this policy has begun to be reversed and it has caused a total meltdown, mostly among wealthy whites it must be said. (And Julius Malema who is a weird racial nationalist who doesn’t care where the black people come from or what they do so long as they drop the percentage white number down despite the proportion for the youngest age cohorts being just 5%)
The recent flap is from the termination of the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit given out over 10 years ago when the numbers from Zimbabwe had become massive. It basically exempted 200k from being considered an illegal immigrant somewhat like the exemption given to Haitians in the US. It has finally be shot down in court. Most of the people going nuts about it were whites and the immigrants themselves. As whites in South African went from having a sense of ownership of the state to becoming a dwindling minority their collective strategies and interests have begun to resemble groups with similar statuses. See also the adoption of libertarian politics and multiculturalism by them.

I'd like to see the Jennifer O'Neill of Scanners replace Summer of '42 Jennifer O'Neill and zap smart ass Gary Grimes with the psychic power endowed to her by Patrick McGoohan's vaccine-like drug. Maybe David Cronenberg can loan her out. Don't worry about Gary getting his cumuppins: he dies in a bloody shootout with Lee Marvin in The Spikes Gang. Although that occurred seven years before the events of Scanners which leaves timeline problems.

I’m old enough to remember Summer of ’42 being promoted and shown on television, but I was too young to understand what it was about, though I remember other boys making much of the condom-buying scene, which I also didn’t get. Since I never saw (or read) it, I read the Wiki summary just now. The most troubling thing to me was less the story itself than all the letters the writer received from women claiming to be “Dorothy”. Okay, I’m old enough now to understand that not every woman is a Penelope, but Cape Cod in 1942 wasn’t exactly densely settled and US war casualties at that time were relatively light, so for there to be “over a dozen” women claiming to be the newlywed Cape Cod honeymooneress who beds a 15-year-old the same night as learning of her husband’s death implies this must have been the near-universal practice. Crikey. Is it possible to suppose that morals have improved since then?
Also, what was an American plane doing over France in the summer of 1942? I thought the US bombing of Europe didn’t get underway until 1943. In 1942 summer, US armed forces were fighting in the Pacific and preparing for the autumn invasion of North Africa. Wiki’s “Factual Basis” section makes a big deal of Now, Voyager not actually being in US theaters until autumn of 1942, yet US air combat over France strikes me as a bigger anachronism. Maybe it was a recon plane?

The new blacks generally behave differently than the old blacks. The do better in school and on the job. Their neighborhoods are nicer. And people develop some slang for the real "descended from Africans" blacks--"affers". ...
So what would actually happen, in the US at least, is people frantically trying to retain their privilege. The government mandates you answer questions about whether you were originally black or not. Some wokes will love it and start acting black, others will be horrified as they try to figure out who is an ex-white, and who is really oppressed. Most people just don’t care, but won’t listen to black excuses anymore.
Like all interventions that aim at a different problem, it will not benefit any actual brown or black people. They now have fewer excuses for failure. If you actual measure how Traditional Black people fair under the uniform skin color condition, it’s worse in every way. Now every unarmed man killed by police is just black on black. No one is sympathetic to work place discrimination based on inability to come on time, speak properly, I want someone to write this as proper novel, that actual tries to envision what would happen.

Steve, thanks for the breezy, erudite, and amusing discussion of Hamid’s new prize-winning bestseller. Essays like this allow me to imagine that you could write an engaging review of a wastewater treatment plant’s procedures manual.
For his follow-on triumph, perhaps Hamid could write a sequel that centers on themes of ancestry, caste, jati, religion, and OTC skin care products in the Indian Subcontinent. I’d anticipate that it would illuminate his ignorance of these subjects — but as you pointed out, Hamid has already shown that the right kind of thoughtlessness is a Feature for the literary set, in The Current Year.

Twelve (or so) minutes at the start of the show, no other voices present. Even for the Lester Holt network, it’s notable.

Why isn’t it called ‘The Last White Person?’
Well, woke white women like to imagine that they aren’t part of the ‘whiteness’ problem, rather than the the ones maintaining its existence. And non-white men ( I think the author is correct here; there are really only two types of people now, white and non-white) fear and resent white men, but they also really dig white women.
Can’t have one without the other, of course, but I sort of think the kind of white woman who’d enjoy this book would also enjoy being the last white woman. Imagine the attention!
Also curious is that many East Asians are extremely white if not lily white in complexion, what happened to them. That's the problem with writing about race in a multi racial environment.

A novel that imagined the end of ‘blackness’ would get the author run out of polite society in no time, although that was essentially the promise of the civil rights era – get rid of de jure racist policies and before too long we’d have integrated neighborhoods and schools in which everyone’s dad goes off to the factory or office in the morning while a loving mom shepherds the kids to school, and there are no meaningful differences between the country’s (then) largest ethnic groups at all.

Based on my experience, 13 year old kids don’t understand anything in clear and concise terms, let alone race and culture. Unless you mean things like Nancy Pelosi’s much younger grandson saying (if we trust her on this, a big if) he wishes he were brown; he picked up from “his experiences in clear and concise terms” White bad, POC good.
But they do, in a similar manner as those white kids in the 1950s and 1960s who listened to “black music” and embraced Civil Rights leaders. And through their own interactions they found out that their parents fears about “darkies” were unfounded.

It’s hard to call it an “adaption” because it’s probably the original setup – if it is an a adaption it was made millions of years ago even before humans were human.
The “adaption” is not having pigmented skin.
One theory is that this was to allow white people to make more Vitamin D in cloudy northern climates.
Another theory is that white skin is a form of sexual selection like peacock feathers (or large breasts on human females) because fairness is a sign of youth/fertility. In sunny places, this sexual selection competition couldn’t run its full course because at some point you would sunburn to death but in the cold north and protected by clothing the race to the bottom could continue until all skin pigment was completely gone.
As I understand it, the current thinking is about a million or so years ago, when we really started full upright walking and colonizing/hunting the savannah. As the fur has gone away, we have to evolve black skin to protect from UV.
Then white comes roaring back when we move out of tropical regions, and need to make vitamin D, even in temperate zone fall, winter, spring. Selection especially driven by pregnancy in these conditions. And yeah, once it gets going there is probably some sexual selection piling on.

The genealogical stuff in the UK and Iceland says about 1.3-1.7% per generation. In the UK, and still more in Iceland, life until recently was relatively rural and religious. And in recorded times, female infidelity in Iceland might have been countered by spear-thrust or axe.

I get that. (BTW, there was a French documentary of the 1939-1940 Western Front that mentioned in passing how many ill-timed French births there were up to nine months after the British’s hasty retreat back across the Channel. How French of them to bring up this aspect of war, I thought, even to their own disadvantage.) My point was more that I would be surprised if there were much more than one newly married war widow vacationing on Cape Cod in summer 1942. As you say, maybe the other letter writers just wanted attention, and that may well be true (though they must have been 60-ish at the time). If I recall correctly, historically this was estimated to be roughly 14%. I don’t know how you arrive at this number where women have a very substantial incentive to lie about it forever. But my guess is that before the modern era of sex regulation there was a large gray area between “not rape” on one end and “rape” on the other, with lots of coercion and acquiescence in that gray area. You’re law trained so of course you recall all of the common law elements of rape and doctrines about a “hue and cry” in assessing rape allegations. It’s probably just the case that powerful/wealthier/older/higher status men could get away with having a lot of fun in the gray area, and younger/lower status women had to acquiesce. So my surmise is that a substantial proportion of bastards were the result of such “gray area” not-rape rapes. If you’re a girl who finds herself in such a situation, your best option is to find a fool, bed him, wed him, and have him play the proud father to your cuckoo.

Years ago there was a thing on PBS about a young woman who was obviously half black, but born to liberal Jewish parents where everybody pretended she was the product of the marriage including the cuckolded father. A year or two ago, I recall a study that used DNA testing and extensive genealogical records to map non-paternity in a number of family trees. Rural England, 1900 to 2000, perhaps? Blacks are slowly going missing in the US. Pure blacks almost no longer exist in the US population. All blacks today have the equivalent of 1 white grandparent.
Most mixed-race blacks are descendants of white slave owners and black slaves. However, these mixed-race children then had offspring that split in two directions, because the end of slavery meant master-slave miscegenation was no longer possible. The mixed-race blacks either married whites and their black genes became diluted with the later addition of white genes, or else the mixed-race people married purer blacks, and their genes became blacker up until around 1960 or so, when social disapproval of mixed black-white marriages began to decline.
A small percentage of whites show a very small admixture of black genes, say around 1 percent. Blacks today have an average of around 24% white genes. You could call this the house slave genetic effect. House slaves were often the parents of white-black miscegenation, and the offspring were treated better and given lighter work inside the plantation house instead of being made to labor in the fields. House slaves often tried to pass for white after the Civil War.
But as a warning to liberals: The percentages make clear the direction in which breeding is going. Black genes are vanishing.
24% white genes means that nearly ALL US blacks have the equivalent of 1 white grandparent. That means the house slaves, who were half white, bred down with pure blacks throughout the 20th century just one more step, but absolutely no farther. They did their utmost to either marry white, mixed race, or just didn’t have children. It also mean pure blacks did their utmost to breed as white as they could. Pure blacks have almost vanished from the US population, but pure whites are as common as dirt.
In 3-4 more generations, the tiny percentage of black genes in some whites will have vanished with more white-to-white marriages, and blacks keep trying to decrease their own black genes and increase their white genes. Everyone is trending towards becoming more and more white.
It means every black in the US now has house slave ancestry–and likely ALL blacks have white slave master ancestry by now. Everyone is running away from black genes. The two populations in the US have become 2 distinct castes. One is pure white, and the other is pure mix trying to breed itself more and more white.
The trend is clear. Black genes are being bred out of the US entirely, although the process is slow. Even today, when you see someone a black marry a white, keep in mind that black is likely to be already 24% white, and the white 100% white. The offspring will be more than half white. If these offspring follow the trends of their ancestors, they will try to marry as white as possible, either a pure white or a mixed-race, doing their utmost to further decrease the percentage of black genes their descendants have.
Black American fertility is sub-replacement, but still higher than white fertility. And black fertility is very highly disgenic. Much more so than whites. "Eugenic" in blacks, correlates highly with "more white". The paper-bag-test passing gals--I know a few--are the ones who get degrees, have trouble landing a suitable--comparatively educated/successful--husband, and do not have children without one. In contrast the 90% African ghetto gals who are straight up too stupid to even manage birthcontrol get knocked up by whomever.
You're certainly right there is quite a bit of white genetic inflow into the black population, but overall--where sticks and stones get rubbed together--it is the black genes that are selected for.
If--if--there's a net reduction in the relative proportion of black genes in America, it is due to immigration--the influx of millions of Hispanics, not quite counterbalanced by the large--but much smaller--influx of blacks from Africa/Caribbean. I like this. This is an excellent example of the kind of thinking which is a product of liberal arts departments of the elite colleges and universities. In one of his last books, the late Theodore H. White wrote that in order to combat the effects of STEM programs which had taken wing in the mid to late 50s the liberal arts departments, fearing being de-emphasized (and possibly de-funded) had to retaliate by producing arcane theories of their own (“deconstruction” etc) which only the “elite” could understand. In other words, a kind of latter-day gnosticism. This was their answer to such as General and Special Relativity, Quantum Theory etc. That it was mostly bullshit meant nothing. A much more interesting premise would involve voluntary race switching. For example, what if they invented a pill that turned you into whatever race you wanted temporarily. How many blacks would switch to white? Would they chose to stay that way all or most of the time, or just occasionally? Would it solve all their perceived problems in life?
Would white wokesters turn black for political solidarity and to destroy “whiteness”? Would wiggers and rednecks go black just to party it up and have more fun? Maybe the longer you stayed race-switched, the more you absorb the non-cosmetic racial traits as your “true self.” (The trans-whites would start talking in a honky voice and showing up to work on time; the trans-blacks would start stabbing anyone who stepped on their shoes, or whatever).

Meanwhile China has been watching the US recklessly edge up the verge of nuclear war for the sake of Israeli aggression towards Syria and do nothing to avert but indeed push for the outbreak a massive war in Europe. The US may have all but declared war on Russia (A state which is powerful enough to beat Ukraine but not able to occupy much of it let alone be a threat to the rest of Europe or the thousands of miles away US) but they actually declared war on China. I might have believed this in 1990, but not anymore. Half of our industrial base has gone to China and elsewhere; and because they have all the money and technical expertise, their engineering schools are getting better and try googling to see the number of international students at our universities "packed with Nobel prize winners" - especially graduate students. American grad students in STEM are already close to being a minority. All of this plus Covid has knocked our "hyper-industrialized" society on its ass; just try to get things repaired today.
And I certainly wouldn't want the US Navy rattling sabers anywhere closer than 250 miles to China. Oh, and don't forget that the Russians have blown apart most of our best land weaponry in spite of the best technical help and training we can offer the Ukrainians.

Chimps can have white faces (the part that is not covered by fur) but their hands and feet are quite black, even the palms and nailbeds which are light colored in humans:
The important thing to remember is that chimps are not less evolved humans, just evolved along a different line. It’s possible that chimps started out all black and then evolved light colored faces or vice versa wrt their hands. No one really knows the skin color of our common ancestor.
As for whiteness being Vitamin D driven, well at least under modern conditions blacks survive ok in northern latitudes. You don’t see blacks dropping dead of rickets, even in the days before Vitamin D milk, so maybe it’s not that strong an effect.

No, the serious attempts to put a figure on this come up with numbers like … 2%.
A lot of people just seem dopey about what the world was like–had to be like–in the before time. Before I finally got to Steve’s review, I read on Amazon that Hamid “confronts race”. In my understanding, “confronting race” is code for a one-way street heading to the detriment of Whites. (I don’t think Whites even have the rhetorical permission to “confront race” and be taken seriously.)
I can see “the last White man”–the title phrase–energizing a literary sub-genre.
But you shouldn’t be accused of exactly hating white human beings themselves (who, as Ta-Nahisi Coates would always point out, are really only “people who think they are white”), just their whiteness.
This is Western imperialist or colonialist logic stood on its head. There were two kinds of white imperialism. The racial kind that said whites are different(and better) than other races. The other kind, defined by Christianity and/or Enlightenment Universalism, said imperialism had nothing against nonwhites per se. Sure, their lands were invaded by conquest and plunder, but it wasn’t really white war on nonwhites. The problem wasn’t their racial nonwhiteness but cultural nonwhiteness, which was associated with savagery, barbarism, feudalism, or some backwardness. However, if those nonwhites elected to learn the proper Christian or universal values from the West, all would be well.
Apparently, whites had discovered the answer for all mankind and had the right(and even duty) to spread this universality to nonwhites, even at the point of the bayonet. It wasn’t whites’ war on nonwhites but only whites’ war on nonwhiteness that insisted on being ignorant, backward, and tyrannical. But once nonwhites learned to be like whites(who stood for universal values), all could be brothers under the sun.
However, such universality didn’t entirely let go of whiteness as a matter of pride and prestige, even if implicit. Even when the ideology was universalist and against racial prejudice, most of the heroes and leaders in stories and narratives were white. And there were ways to maintain privilege, often along racial lines. Today, white elites aren’t so brazenly racial in their outlook but still use connections and ties to ensure their access and privilege even as they pontificate about equity and such that don’t apply to themselves.
So, naturally, nonwhites turned the tables and took up this universalism(spread around the world by whites) and pointed to how it has favored whites above nonwhites. In other words, whites said they were spreading universalism against nonwhiteness of ignorance and backwardness. But their universalism was unmistakably Western dominant with white faces. And even the US, founded on abstract principles, was very much a racial creation.
The real lesson here is Go Easy on Universalism. It’s not only impossible but it either exposes the hypocrisy of your side that says one thing but does another or leads to racial extinction if applied sincerely because radical universalism will erase and mix all races or because a devious group will bolster its own identity by shaming others for their failure to live up to universal ideals.
We have in the West one of the weirdest phenomenon. Jews incessantly reminding whites that the notion of ‘white nation’ is bigoted and must go but somehow having managed to convinced whites that it’s the highest prerogative of the West to ensure not only the existence but the expansion of the Jewish State.
This is the kind of thing that tyrants like to push because it suits their interests. In the West, this stance is popular among isolationists because it gives them an excuse to say that its "none of our business" when terrible things happen beyond our borders. You may not be interested in repression, but repression is interested in you.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is truly universal - it applies to all humans, not only those who were lucky enough to be born in a democratic country. I was once on a tubing trip on a Tennessee river (we were out there for the total solar eclipse the day before) and was envious of the dark skin of a member of our party. I had forgotten to put on sunscreen and I was stuck lying across this rubber tube on a slow moving river frying like a pale strip of bacon. Thick curly hair and dark skin are very practical if you’re stuck out in the southern summer midday sun. Had I been more resourceful, I would have stopped and slathered riverbank mud over myself. My feet looked like boiled lobster the next day.

Hamid’s Last Whiteman seems to have the same themes, but does not end up in the same place as the post WWII literature did. Oddly both Hamid, I am assuming as I did not read his book, and the post WWII writers were examining the same themes extremism but Hamid seems to endorse conformism to whole.

Look into Zolkin’s channel. He has interviewed hundreds of Russian POWs. The POWs are not under any compulsion to talk to him. He sits in a room with them with no guards. No one holds a gun to their head. He films without cuts. He asks each POW to recite identifying details because people like you accuse him of interviewing Ukrainian actors. He often shows their vkontakte or other social media pages. If these guys are actors they deserve academy awards – they are often wounded in gruesome ways.
Is it a form of “psyops” – I suppose so, but that doesn’t mean that they are not 100% genuine. He hopes to reach the Russian people and sway them against the war. He wants new recruits to evade service in Ukraine. He doesn’t hide his motives.
The interviews also serve as proof of life for the families back home. Zolkin wants these guys exchanged for Ukrainian prisoners. The Russian military is reluctant to put POWs on the exchange list – they tell the families that their son is missing or dead or has deserted. The families use these videos to prove to the MoD that their sons are in a Ukrainian prison.

It was unpublished in his lifetime and didn’t appear until Glenn Lord published it in the Howard Collector #5 in 1964. It’s not in the public domain, so you may have to dig around to find.

I might have believed this in 1990, but not anymore. Half of our industrial base has gone to China and elsewhere; and because they have all the money and technical expertise, their engineering schools are getting better and try googling to see the number of international students at our universities “packed with Nobel prize winners” – especially graduate students. American grad students in STEM are already close to being a minority. All of this plus Covid has knocked our “hyper-industrialized” society on its ass; just try to get things repaired today.
And I certainly wouldn’t want the US Navy rattling sabers anywhere closer than 250 miles to China. Oh, and don’t forget that the Russians have blown apart most of our best land weaponry in spite of the best technical help and training we can offer the Ukrainians.
I haven’t read fiction in a decade or two, but I find that hard to believe. More likely, this off-white guy just plays to current Woke prejudices because he knows he’s not good enough to make it otherwise, just like some commenter accused Rushdie of doing long ago with his provocative title (never read any of that claptrap, sure sign was that women were into it).
This is the kind of thing that tyrants like to push because it suits their interests. In the West, this stance is popular among isolationists because it gives them an excuse to say that its "none of our business" when terrible things happen beyond our borders. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is truly universal - it applies to all humans, not only those who were lucky enough to be born in a democratic country. I never read the book and only saw the movie, but, as best I can recall what I haven’t seen for decades, didn’t Jennifer O’Neill’s “Dorothy” seduce him? (Not that that really improves the situation any …) My hormones and I were obviously too fixated on Jennifer O’Neill back then to ponder the severe moral pratfalls.
The actual 'Dorothy' sent him a letter of apology some years after the film appeared. She would have been approaching 60 at the time. Raucher is still alive at age 94.
If my own memory of the film and the novel is true, the dialogue and action takes place among the author, his two friends, the girls they dated on the island, and so forth, with Dorothy appearing in only two or three scenes and not given much dialogue. By some accounts, the project began as a tribute to a friend killed during the Korean War; the friend is one of the characters in the story.

Come on. If you had a space laser in 1600 AD and zapped a small path from England through Scotland, the Netherlands, a few tiny countries down to present day Northern Germany – there would be no modern world. Maybe continue to present day Poland (Copernicus, Spinoza, etc.). If you want to recognize music, dance and literature as significant human achievements keep going to St. Petersburg. That’s it.
No scientific revolution, no industrial revolution, no limited government. There is nothing about the world or the human condition that required those things to happen.

I get it. Anyone who doesn’t adhere to what you believe to be truth has been “programmed”. Then there is no need anymore to engage in critical thinking. But life doesn’t work that way. The young people of their own free will have sought out information, disseminated it, discussed it, and now incorporated it into their lives. The result is a different way of thinking that you personally disagree with.

That map should be taken with a large grain of salt. India-Pakistan, Pakistan-Iran, Pakistan-Afghanistan, Iran-Iraq, Spain-France, France-U.K., France-Germany, Japan-South Korea etc., clines are too large to make sense. I am guessing someone spoke to a few people in each country on Skype and produced that chart. Another creative sociologist tripped up by statistics.

My understanding, which may be wrong or grossly simplified, is that the Industrial Revolution was solely a product of the UK. Other countries soon copied and followed, but the Empire was founded on the head start of the UK.
In science, I remember France had some major discoveries in biology.
The funny thing is, I said that none of those things had to happen (as in a simple byproduct of progress as people discovered more stuff). Today we are having an ainti-Industrial Revolution, with whole nations swearing off practical energy. We are also having an ainti-Scientific Revolution with powerful institutions and governments declaring that science is simply one race imposing their prejudices about knowledge on other peoples.
In college what really struck me is that almost all knowledge was “suspect.” The Greek Philosophers spun a great web and when you read them you were drawn in – surely that is the truth about existence and ethics, but then the next one would come along just a convincing. Newton however was so obviously a better explainer than what came before and the prestige of Science was so great that every field of knowledge claimed to be scientific.
Marx even claimed to have discovered a scientific politics.
