Global genetic differentiation of complex traits shaped by natural selection in humans

There are mean differences in complex traits among global human populations. We hypothesize that part of the phenotypic differentiation is due to natural selection. To address this hypothesis, we assess the differentiation in allele frequencies of trait-associated SNPs among African, Eastern Asian, and European populations for ten complex traits using data of large sample size (up to ~405,000). We show that SNPs associated with height (P=2.46×10−5), waist-to-hip ratio (P=2.77×10−4), and schizophrenia (P=3.96×10−5) are significantly more differentiated among populations than matched “control” SNPs, suggesting that these trait-associated SNPs have undergone natural selection. We further find that SNPs associated with height (P=2.01×10−6) and schizophrenia (P=5.16×10−18) show significantly higher variance in linkage disequilibrium (LD) scores across populations than control SNPs. Our results support the hypothesis that natural selection has shaped the genetic differentiation of complex traits, such as height and schizophrenia, among worldwide populations. …

Many human complex traits, including quantitative traits (e.g., height1) and complex disorders (e.g., cardiovascular diseases2,3), are substantially differentiated among worldwide populations. For example, the mean height in Northern Hemisphere populations generally increases with latitude1,4. European Americans have a lower body mass index (BMI) (~1.3 kg/m2) than African Americans but a higher BMI (1.9–3.2 kg/m2) than Asians, such as Chinese, Indonesians, and Thais for the same body fat percentage5,6. For the mortality rates associated with ischemic heart disease in the UK, African Caribbeans are at a lower risk while South Asians are at a higher risk than Europeans7. While environmental factors certainly play a role, since most complex traits have a genetic component, the question is whether or not the phenotypic differentiation is partly due to genetic differentiation and, if so, whether the genetic differentiation is a consequence of genetic drift or natural selection. …
If drift is the main force, then you probably can’t guess which direction the genes you don’t yet know about are pointing. If selection is the main force, then, according to the Racimo-Piffer hypothesis, the undiscovered genes are probably tending to point in the same direction as the known gene variants.

They tested 10 traits to see if the genetic variants associated with them vary more among between three groups (Whites, Blacks, East Asians) than would be expected under drift (i.e., simple genetic distance):
Height
Body-mass-index
Waist-to-hip ratio adjusted by BMI
High-density lipoprotein cholesterol
Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol
Education attainment years
Alzheimer’s disease
Coronary artery disease
Schizophrenia
Type II diabetes
Bolded are the ones for which significant differences were found. The implication is that either these traits are directly under selection or that the largish number of the genetic variants that underlie the trait are selected indirectly through their pleotropic effects on some other trait(s) that increase fitness.
The latter is theoretically possible but the former is clearly more parsimonious.
To me, the biggest surprise was that Asians are genetically more schizophrenic than whites.
And then suddenly the streets were full of 5ft men with 60 inch waists and 4ft 9 women with 60 inch waists
That looks like a large difference for height.
Supplementary Figure 14 has an interesting look at three regions with high LD scores. For one of the regions they show the Height and HDL related SNPs included.

Do we really need to probe the genome to figure this out?
This is the weird thing. If you do *not* think that natural selection is making the human races different then you really don’t believe in “the theory of evolution” or even … “natural selection”.
The whole point of selection is that different environments create different selection pressures, leading to different characteristics. And humans have not only been living in different environments, but they have been changing their environments, and hence the selection pressures,by means of their disparate “cultural” efforts–e.g. agriculture, trade, written language, bureaucracy … the welfare state. So we’ve embarked on–somewhat separate–programs of gene-culture co-evolution.
If you don’t think that the wildly varying human environments, both geographical, climatic and cultural have been changing human genetics through selection … then you really do not believe in natural selection. Actually you don’t believe in biology or in fact logic, because selection is just logic: that which survives and reproduces … survives; that which does not, dies.

I read a bit on this at the time and while i may have some details wrong, the short story is exactly that. This women was having some sort of tiff with her boyfriend and went out to "have fun"--i.e. get drunk, flirting and screw around. She then proceeded to do just that. Only she got so hammered that somewhere between drinking, flirting, making out and--what back in the day we called "petting"--with Brock Turner in the bar and getting somewhere to consumate the act, she passed out.
Two people get drunk and flirt and grope each other in a bar. Brock Turner--hammered--is responsible for fingering her after she passed out and is doing six months in jail then is a lifetime "sex offender". But this gal is not responsible for anything. Not for being there drunk lying on the ground next to guy she'd been groping and was--one assumes--going somewhere with to get busy. Nope, she's a poor innocent victim. Actually she's been "raped". (Let's imagine what would have happened if she'd had just one less drink? Yeah, they'd have made it to whereever and done the nasty. Of course, then in the morning ... she could call that rape!)
This is just more of the general rule in our society that women are "free", but never ever responsible for their choices.
Don't get me wrong, i don't want my daughters subjected to Brock Turner's behavior. But neither do i want them thinking--nor do they--that it's ok to go out get wasted, flirt with, grope and head off with a strange man.

Frankly the most odious person in this episode is not Brock Turner. It's this woman who upon coming to, accepts no responsiblity for anything and pens this 11 page, ludicrous, self-indulgent, pastiche of whining, feminine self-regard, feminist boilerplate denouncing Brock Turner, patriarchy, the system for her "rape". Basically everyone in the world is responsible for her getting fingered while drunk and passed out ... except her.
But now she might be surpassed as "most odious" by this female law prof, out for the judge's head, because his penalty for Turner was actually a pretty reasonable fit for the crime.
And the most pathetic person in this story is not Brock Turner either. It's the boyfriend of this woman who--at least at the time--was standing by her. By her, after she went out to get drunk, flirt and screw around. Talk about a cuck. If it was me, i wouldn't take her back if she had a snatch that made me see the almighty upon climax. This is the paper which was waiting to be written! It seems like solid, incontrovertible evidence for HBD at the genetic level. This could have widespread impact. Those of us who have taken the “red pill” are not at all surprised at the results, but a much bigger tier of fringe-mainstream HBD denialists will be nudged toward the scientific truth. But there’s no rush to jump to conclusions: there’s a paper coming that will be highly relevant to a piece of the puzzle, so these kind of analyses will have an even better base of data to get to work on by summer or so.

I can’t figure out why there’s all this nonsense about “genetic drift”. For neutral SNPs sure. Someone picks up a mutation over here and when that family moves off … you find it over there, but not somewhere else. Even for neutrals once you get to a decent population size random sampling effects are just noise–basically irrelevant.
For anything that actually matters selection is in the driver’s seat. What keeps a rabbit “rabbity” is that there are hawks and eagles, foxes and coyotes around to prune the “unrabbity”. You may be right that the power elite will keep a lid on the acknowledgement of HBD and its clear import for understanding modern societies. On the other hand, JM Keynes has a clever line about how “academic scribblers” over time have a hidden but powerful impact on mainstream political and social beliefs. The “academic scribblers” in the natural and social sciences might eventually rebel against being forced to believe outright lies when the evidence is boldly and clearly in front of them. Genetic evidence has a deeper level of undeniability than social-statistical evidence since there is no way to ascribe genetic findings to confounding variables in the social environment.

A subset of creatures belonging to one species are physically separated from the rest of their kind; there is no longer the possibility of any gene flow between the two groups, who are now isolated from one another. Mutations, which are held to occur at random and more or less continuously, arise and spread in each group, altering their genomes in different ways. A few of these mutations are beneficial for the survival of individuals within the groups and thus result in separate and successive genetic bottlenecks which amplify their divergence from one another. Eventually, the two groups are no longer recognizably the same species.
Interestingly, it follows from this description that mutation and drift alone are sufficient to explain speciation, with selective pressure serving only to accelerate the process. The entire notion is implicitly present in the very drawing of a cladogram, and the structure of the cladogram is itself implicitly present in any scheme of taxonomic classification that assumes a common origin. But “mutation” is the name of the thing under consideration, not the explanation of it. To say that something changed because it changed is tautological. Being thus entailed by the structure of the logic, mutation can also be safely dropped from consideration. In the last analysis, Darwinism reduces solely to the assumption of common descent; that is its entire kernel and essence. And if the assumption of common descent is true, then that means that all living forms are simply modes, manifestations, attributes, or plasticities within the single form “life.” Should this assertion be shown false by reductio, then Darwinism is itself eo ipso likewise false.
And so it is, for “life” is not a form. Life is not the description of any substance, nor is it possible to meet with “life” apart from living things. “Life” is an adjective that pertains to substances united with existence. As with other accidents, life can only be said to inhere in a substance; it does not exist apart from the substances in which it is accidental. I read a bit on this at the time and while i may have some details wrong, the short story is exactly that. This women was having some sort of tiff with her boyfriend and went out to "have fun"--i.e. get drunk, flirting and screw around. She then proceeded to do just that. Only she got so hammered that somewhere between drinking, flirting, making out and--what back in the day we called "petting"--with Brock Turner in the bar and getting somewhere to consumate the act, she passed out.
Two people get drunk and flirt and grope each other in a bar. Brock Turner--hammered--is responsible for fingering her after she passed out and is doing six months in jail then is a lifetime "sex offender". But this gal is not responsible for anything. Not for being there drunk lying on the ground next to guy she'd been groping and was--one assumes--going somewhere with to get busy. Nope, she's a poor innocent victim. Actually she's been "raped". (Let's imagine what would have happened if she'd had just one less drink? Yeah, they'd have made it to whereever and done the nasty. Of course, then in the morning ... she could call that rape!)
This is just more of the general rule in our society that women are "free", but never ever responsible for their choices.

Frankly the most odious person in this episode is not Brock Turner. Of course. This is, of course, exactly the reason why this woman played up the story so hard. Without the bogus “rape” claim, she’s… just a woman who went out, got drunk, and picked up some random guy to sleep with, in order to get back at her boyfriend.
