From the Washington Post book review section about a novel called The Last White Man by McKinsey consultant turned novelist Mohsin Hamid, who is based in England.

What if White people woke up with dark skin? Mohsin Hamid’s novel wonders.

‘The Last White Man’ is a fantastical exploration of race and privilege

More than a century ago, Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams and found himself transformed into a monstrous insect.

Mohsin Hamid’s new novel, “The Last White Man,” buzzes with an ironic allusion to that unsettling metamorphosis. In the opening sentence, a White man named Anders awakens one morning to discover that his skin has turned “a deep and undeniable brown.” Following Kafka’s lead, the cause of this sudden alteration remains unknown; its meaning is equally elusive. What follows sometimes feels like a curious thought experiment — or Tucker Carlson’s worst nightmare, a racist fever dream of “the great replacement theory.”

… Rage at his new situation, twinned with nostalgia for his lost identity, sends Anders back to bed. “He realized that he had been robbed,” Hamid writes, “that he was the victim of a crime, the horror of which only grew, a crime that had taken everything from him, that had taken him from him.” In such moments, which lurk all over this novel, one feels the fierce sting of Hamid’s insight, his ability to articulate the cherished premises of White superiority.

Hoping against hope that his condition might spontaneously reverse itself, Anders tells his manager he’s too sick to come into work. Only hunger eventually forces him outside, back into the company of others. No one at the grocery store seems to notice his transformation — or seems to notice him at all, in fact — but Anders suspects “flickers of hostility or distaste” from White people. And he quickly comprehends the social exigencies of his revised appearance. He knows instinctively that “it was essential not to be seen as a threat, for to be seen as a threat, as dark as he was, was to risk one day being obliterated.”

… The darkening that befalls Anders is happening all over this unnamed town. Everywhere, formerly White people are waking up with skin “a deep and undeniable brown.”

To the conspiracy minded, hypnotized by incendiary websites and radio shows, this skin-deep change is a calamity, the horrifying culmination of a diabolical “plot against their kind.” Violence flares. “Pale-skinned militants, some dressed almost like soldiers in combat uniform,” take to the streets. Social media lights up with frantic talk of “a miracle drug … to undo the horror.” In despair, some newly darkened people kill themselves.

“The Last White Man” is a discomfiting little book, which I suspect resists what some readers would like it to be. It’s too sincere for dystopian satire, too earnest for cultural parody. It describes the apocalypse long feared by white supremacists by subjecting that paranoia to blistering attention….

Such a story could be written only by an author who is entirely candid about his awkward journey along the racial spectrum. In an essay published recently in the Guardian, Hamid explained that “The Last White Man” evolved from his sudden loss of White privilege after 9/11. “I had always been a brown man with a Muslim name,” he writes. “But I had been white enough — as a relatively well-paid, university-educated inhabitant of cosmopolitan cities — to partake in many of the benefits of whiteness. And now my partial membership was being revoked.” In the anxious days and months after al-Qaeda’s surprise attack on the United States, Hamid found himself detained for questioning at airports and eyed with fear by fellow passengers on buses and trains. In a moment, it seemed, his skin had turned dark and suspicious.

My guess is that Hamid’s family are proud of how fair-skinned they are compared to other South Asians, so he was outraged, after his fellow Muslims murdered 3000 Americans, by the sheer impertinence of somebody of his genetic quality being subjected to any scrutiny.

The tone of “The Last White Man” echoes that complicated, shameful grief. Contemplating “the odd wrapper he was wrapped in,” Anders mourns the loss of his Whiteness and the advantages with which it once endowed him — even as he comes to realize the artificiality and cruelty of the vanishing system that held him aloft.

For a novel that explores the functions and presumptions of racism, “The Last White Man” is a peculiarly hopeful story. Its method may be fantastical speculation, but its faith eventually leads to the inevitability of social enlightenment. It anticipates that sweet day — not forever deferred, surely — when we finally close the casket on the whole horrific construct of racial hierarchies and see each other for what we are.

The extinction of the white race seems like a popular topic for a novel:

“Fantastical treatments of race have long served to underscore just how absurd it is that this social construct should wield so much power. Hamid’s novel follows in this legacy, challenging readers to consider the ways in which something as superficial as the color of one’s skin holds sway in their lives.”—TIME

“A moral fable for our entire harrowing world. . . . exquisitely evoked by Hamid in a mesmerizing, serpentine style. . . .The Last White Man offers its own small ray of light.”—Los Angeles Times

“Searing, exhilarating. . . . reimagines Kafka’s iconic The Metamorphosis for our racially charged era. … Hamid brings a restless, relentless brilliance to his characters’ journeys and the revelations, public and private, that inform us all. … Gorgeously crafted, morally authoritative, The Last White Man concludes on a note of hope, a door jarred open just enough to let transcendence pour through.” —Oprah Daily

“Hamid’s likely readers already know race is a ‘construct’ that we could do nicely without. . . . But whether deliberately or not — and Hamid’s too smart a writer not to know what he’s doing — The Last White Man has an additional agenda: to destabilize not just our toxic imaginings but our conventional notions of fiction itself.”—New York Times Book Review

“An effective allegory on race and racism in America. . . . Thoughtful writers like Hamid are essential.” —Star Tribune

“A Kafka-centric allegory on racism and the loss of white privilege. . . . The Last White Man begs the question of how deep the well of empathy and unity runs, making this an engaging read book-lovers don’t want to miss.” —PopSugar

“An emotionally gut-punching exploration of race, privilege, grief, and white anxiety.” —Mother Jones

“A frighteningly timely allegory about welcome forms of progress and the fears of people unable or unwilling to grow.” – Shelf Awareness (starred review)

“A brilliantly realized allegory of racial transformation. . . . Hamid’s story is poignant and pointed, speaking to a more equitable future in which widespread change, though confusing and dislocating in the moment, can serve to erase the divisions of old as they fade away with the passing years. A provocative tale that raises questions of racial and social justice at every turn.” —Kirkus (starred review)

“Hamid. . . reminds us yet again that fiction sometimes provides the most direct path to truth.” —BookPage (starred review)

“Concise, powerful. . . . Hamid imaginatively takes on timely, universal topics, including identity, grief, community, family, race, and what it means to live through sudden and often violent change.” —Booklist

“With one remarkable book after another, Mohsin Hamid has proven himself to be one of the 21st century’s most essential writers. This is, perhaps, his most remarkable work yet. THE LAST WHITE MAN is myth and poetry operating as a deeper form of social commentary, and an extraordinary vision of human possibility.” —Ayad Akhtar, author of Homeland Elegies

Yet, judging from Hamid’s Wikipedia entry, the white man has been very very good to Mr. Hamid:

Mohsin Hamid (Urdu: محسن حامد; born 23 July 1971) is a British Pakistani novelist, writer and brand consultant.

Born to family of Punjabi and Kashmiri descent, Hamid spent part of his childhood in the United States, where he stayed from the age of 3 to 9 while his father, a university professor, was enrolled in a PhD program at Stanford University. He then moved with his family back to Lahore, Pakistan, and attended the Lahore American School.

At the age of 18, Hamid returned to the United States to continue his education. He graduated summa cum laude with an A.B. from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University in 1993 after completing an 127-page-long senior thesis, titled “Sustainable Power: Integrated Resource Planning in Pakistan”, under the supervision of Robert H. Williams. While he was a student at Princeton, Hamid studied under Joyce Carol Oates and Toni Morrison. Hamid wrote the first draft of his first novel for a fiction workshop taught by Morrison. He returned to Pakistan after college to continue working on it.

Hamid then attended Harvard Law School, graduating in 1997. Finding corporate law boring, he repaid his student loans by working for several years as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company in New York City. He was allowed to take three months off each year to write, and he used this time to complete his first novel Moth Smoke.

Work
Hamid moved to London in the summer of 2001, initially intending to stay only one year. Although he frequently returned to Pakistan to write, he continued to live in London for eight years, becoming a dual citizen of the United Kingdom in 2006. In 2004 he joined the brand consultancy Wolff Olins, working only three days a week so as to retain time to write. He later served as managing director of Wolff Olins’ London office, and in 2015 was appointed the firm’s first-ever Chief Storytelling Officer. …

His third novel, How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia, was excerpted by The New Yorker in their 24 September 2012 issue and by Granta in their Spring 2013 issue, and was released in March 2013 by Riverhead Books.

Hamid has also written on politics, art, literature, travel, and other topics, most recently on Pakistan’s internal division and extremism in an op-ed for the New York Times. His journalism, essays, and stories have appeared in TIME, The Guardian, Dawn, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The International Herald Tribune, the Paris Review, and other publications. In 2013 he was named one of the world’s 100 Leading Global Thinkers by Foreign Policy magazine.

Extremely privileged South Asians, such as Hamid and Suketu Mehta, author of This Land Is Our Land: An Immigrant’s Manifesto, seem to be the most hate-filled toward white people. They are close enough to whites to recognize the superiority of white accomplishment over that of South Asians and to resent it.

It’s time for my August triennial fundraiser. I need a new car to replace my 1998 Infiniti. And dog food for Lambo:

Here are nine ways for you to contribute:

First: Most banks now allow fee-free money transfers via Zelle.

Zelle is really a good system: easy to use and the fees are nonexistent.

If you have a Wells Fargo bank account, you can transfer money to me (with no fees) via Wells Fargo SurePay/Zelle. Just tell WF SurePay/Zelle to send the money to my ancient AOL email address steveslrAT aol.com — replace the AT with the usual @). (Non-tax deductible.) Please note, there is no 2.9% fee like with Paypal or Google Wallet, so this is good for large contributions.

Zelle contributions are not tax deductible.

Second: if you have a Chase bank account (or even other bank accounts), you can transfer money to me (with no fees) via Chase QuickPay/Zelle (FAQ). Just tell Chase QuickPay/Zelle to send the money to my ancient AOL email address (steveslrATaol.com — replace the AT with the usual @). If Chase asks for the name on my account, it’s StevenSailer with an n at the end of Steven. (Non-tax deductible.) There is no 2.9% fee like with Paypal or Google Wallet, so this is also good for large contributions.

Third, Zelle might work with other banks too. Here’s a Zelle link for CitiBank. And Bank of America.

Fourth: You can use Paypal (non-tax deductible) by going to the page on my old blog here. Paypal accepts most credit cards. Contributions can be either one-time only, monthly, or annual. (Monthly is nice.)

Fifth: You can mail a non-tax deductible donation to:

Steve Sailer
P.O Box 4142
Valley Village, CA 91617

I have no idea why somebody carefully hung this empty picture frame from a tree alongside the Fryman Canyon hiking trail, but I appreciate it, like I appreciate your support.

Sixth: You can make a tax deductible contribution via VDARE by clicking here.

Please don’t forget to click my name at the VDARE site so the money goes to me: first, click on “Earmark your donation,” then click on “Steve Sailer:”

This is not to say that you shouldn’t click on John’s fund too, but, please, make sure there’s a blue dot next to my name.

VDARE has been kiboshed from use of Paypal for being, I dunno, EVIL. But you can give via credit cards, Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin, check, money order, or stock.

Note: the VDARE site goes up and down on its own schedule, so if this link stops working, please let me know.

Seventh: send money via the Paypal-like Google Wallet to my Gmail address (that’s isteveslrATgmail .com — replace the AT with a @). (Non-tax deductible.)

Eight: You can send me Bitcoin. Bitcoin payments are not tax deductible.

Here’s my Bitcoin address:

  1. In his case, shouldn’t that be “Lehore, Pakistan?”

I kept reading his Christian name as “Hosni.”

  2. It should be pretty obvious by now, the more anti-racist and inclusive of non-whites White people become the more White people will suffer.

  3. In the opening sentence, a White man named Anders awakens one morning to discover that his skin has turned “a deep and undeniable brown.”

Yeah, but does he still have his dick on him and the same number of IQ points? Then that’s no nightmare.

Exactly. I’m already a little brown (especially during July and August), but if I woke up and was Bill Russell-colored but with the same inside parts, I’d ride the affirmative action Black Republican grift to political and/or financial success. Maybe I’d even pull a Glenn Loury (who I presume had more genuine motives) and flip back and forth between right-leaning and denouncing the right a few times, to maximize my footprint.

So, some type of system where each eligible person would get one vote and the winner would be determined by who got the most votes.
I suppose we could do it that way. It would be weird, though.

  5. I read a sci-fi novel (short story?) in the sixties about something like this. A man went into space and came back several thousands(?) of years later. Having either been in stasis or experienced what happened to Taylor and his crew in Planet of the Apes.

I have no recollection of the main action of the story. Except that at the end his love interest (yes, a woman) told him that evolution had turned everyone White.

At least that is how I remember it. Anyone else ever come across this one?

  8. Following from the point in Mr. Sailer’s post about Anna I. Krylov and the politicization of science, I think it is important to name the ideologically servile book reviewer who wrote “Hamid’s likely readers already know race is a ‘construct’ that we could do nicely without.” He is David Gates. The portrayal of racial issues as being merely based on appearance is dishonest, unscientific, untrue, and a deliberate effort to deny the reality of human sub-species. Stop labeling malice 'silliness.' They hate you and they want you dead, and they think it's funny. You are the 'very silly man' here.

This is actually pretty much the gist of it--of the particular South Asian issue Sailer notes.

These are extremely unequal, stratified societies and these folks are the aristocrats, the gentry. Back home they were elite by caste or class and waited on hand and foot by their serfs. But the societies that they run ... suck compared to the West.

Then the South Asian gets to the West, and its chock full of these ordinary white rubes (let's admit the average white person is not particularly impressive) who somehow are entitled to live in a much more functional society. And who do not appreciate the South Asian's special aristocratic wonderfulness and in fact often just see "oh, another brown dude" (another brown dude who has plopped his fat ass down onto my nation).

    I think that's the mental/emotional thicket:
-- they know they are wonderful
-- yet their societies--the societies their people are very much in charge of--woefully lag the West
-- having experienced life in the West ... they just can not seem to go back to their own societies
    ...
    ...
terrible racist white man to blame!

How do you get a job like this ? And what does it involve ? I imagine making hot chocolate then reading stories to executives as they drift of to sleep, but it could be a bit different.

  15. We captured that quaint London bookshop scene while we were based in England. Speaking of based, and I do mean based, in England, we have discussed Lionel Shriver’s prepper novel The Mandibles before in these pages. Question for anyone who’s read Mr. Hamid’s novel with all the glowing reviews: Is this book a prepper novel?

I mean there’s this part about “Anders tells his manager he’s too sick to come into work.” If all the formerly White men don’t come into work, then, well, yeah, this is a prepper novel. I imagine it might have slightly different details – instead of “beans, bullets, and band-aids”, perhaps “baklava, burquas, and bacha bāzī”.

(Steve:) Extremely privileged South Asians, such as Hamid and Suketu Mehta, author of This Land Is Our Land: An Immigrant’s Manifesto, seem to be the most hate-filled toward white people.

It’s some kind of contest, apparently, and no one wants to come in second.

One of many ironies in his tale is the undeniable fact that if he were white, he’d have enjoyed none of his many privileges; moreover no one would even know his name.

  17. And when the last White Man is gone, the others can crap by the side of the road, and then squat in their hovels, pondering the function of the flush toilet.

    India partout.

  18. They are close enough to whites to recognize the superiority of white accomplishment over that of South Asians and to resent it.

All clannish socially grasping immigrant groups hate the natives. South Asians of the upper classes and castes have intense hatred of those they feel are their social inferiors. (Hence why so many Hindus have been rising up the ranks of the Conservative Party in the UK rather than the Labour party, they find they share a contempt of the working class and paying taxes for social welfare with many of it’s leadership)

You see similar outbursts among East Asian and Jewish immigrants too. But what sets South Asians apart is the deep hatred they’re taught against the British (Which is actually interesting because other places colonised far longer and with far worse outcomes don’t) and the fact that if you’re the result of 3000 years of selecting breeding to preserve Aryan traits after insufficient endogamy following a genocidal invasion ruined it all, you’re going to really resent the real thing because your sense of superiority is founded on being a third or a quarter of what they are. (Much was made of social media posts by Hindu nationalists in India talking about India now being free to raid the fair women of Kashmir)

What drives some upper caste Indians so crazy is nobody in the West treats them with any special regard. Nobody cares about your family lineage even if you explained it to them they wouldn’t care or really understand.

But South Asians have come to see places like Britain, Australia and Canada as part of their ‘plunder space’ and so feel entitled to these places now. Similar to Turks and Germany. Immigration begets more immigration by having peoples expand their view beyond their ‘home space’ into their ‘plunder space’.

That has the ring of truth to it. Perhaps Mr. Hamid is simply inverting an old fantasy that perhaps exists among subcontinentals—of falling asleep and waking up fully white. The arrival of the completely, 100%, white English must have been a rude shock to the ruling upper castes who were so exquisitely attuned to shades of skin color and every trace of visible evidence of ancient Caucasian ancestry.

My Church sponsored a school for Dalit children in India. The idea was to educate them and teach them English so they could get a job in the tech and customer service hubs. Working in tech myself and dealing with outsourced jobs to India I warned that these companies discriminate against lower caste Indians and Christians. Now that the first group of kids graduated school they're finding they'll need to hide their caste and religion to get a job.

Indians who defend the British empire are nearly always low caste. They regard the British era, and the first few decades of independence, as a brief period of Indian history when they weren't kicked around by the Brahmins.

Gandhi also opposed caste discrimination and was famously killed for it. However his view prevailed after independence, with the new generation of nationalists regarding caste discrimination as a source of national weakness, as well as an injustice.

This however has changed since the rise of the BJP in the 1990s. The Brahmins are back, and they don't care what you think.

The reason British Indians support the Conservatives is because British Pakistanis support Labour. That's all.

They are close enough to whites to recognize the superiority of white accomplishment over that of South Asians and to resent it.

All clannish socially grasping immigrant groups hate the natives. South Asians of the upper classes and castes have intense hatred of those they feel are their social inferiors. (Hence why so many Hindus have been rising up the ranks of the Conservative Party in the UK rather than the Labour party, they find they share a contempt of the working class and paying taxes for social welfare with many of it's leadership)

You see similar outbursts among East Asian and Jewish immigrants too. But what sets South Asians apart is the deep hatred they're taught against the British (Which is actually interesting because other places colonised far longer and with far worse outcomes don't) and the fact that if you're the result of 3000 years of selecting breeding to preserve Aryan traits after insufficient endogamy following a genocidal invasion ruined it all, you're going to really resent the real thing because your sense of superiority is founded on being a third or a quarter of what they are. (Much was made of social media posts by Hindu nationalists in India talking about India now being free to raid the fair women of Kashmir)

What drives some upper caste Indians so crazy is nobody in the West treats them with any special regard. Nobody cares about your family lineage even if you explained it to them they wouldn't care or really understand.

But South Asians have come to see places like Britain, Australia and Canada as part of their 'plunder space' and so feel entitled to these places now. Similar to Turks and Germany. Immigration begets more immigration by having peoples expand their view beyond their 'home space' into their 'plunder space'.

That has the ring of truth to it. Perhaps Mr. Hamid is simply inverting an old fantasy that perhaps exists among subcontinentals—of falling asleep and waking up fully white. This is evergreen:

Western man towers over the rest of the world in ways so large as to be almost
inexpressible. It’s Western exploration, science, and conquest that have revealed the world to itself. Other races feel like subjects of Western power long after colonialism, imperialism, and slavery have disappeared. The charge of racism puzzles whites who feel not hostility, but only baffled good will, because they don’t grasp what it really means: humiliation. The white man presents an image of superiority even when he isn’t conscious of it. And, superiority excites envy. Destroying white civilization is the inmost desire of the league of designated victims we call minorities.

This is actually pretty much the gist of it–of the particular South Asian issue Sailer notes.

These are extremely unequal, stratified societies and these folks are the aristocrats, the gentry. Back home they were elite by caste or class and waited on hand and foot by their serfs. But the societies that they run … suck compared to the West.

Then the South Asian gets to the West, and its chock full of these ordinary white rubes (let’s admit the average white person is not particularly impressive) who somehow are entitled to live in a much more functional society. And who do not appreciate the South Asian’s special aristocratic wonderfulness and in fact often just see “oh, another brown dude” (another brown dude who has plopped his fat ass down onto my nation).

    I think that’s the mental/emotional thicket:
    — they know they are wonderful
    — yet their societies–the societies their people are very much in charge of–woefully lag the West
    — having experienced life in the West … they just can not seem to go back to their own societies

It stuck with us (my brothers and me), as a higher, more sobering, explanation of the human condition than the often self-congratulatory idea of “noblesse oblige”. The nonwhites that whine the most about racism tend to be lighter skinned.
They get their social status in their own communities from being ‘white’. That means nothing to actual white people. They feel inferior to whites because of their own standards of status.
They then decide they are victims of “racism” by whites , which is simply psychological projection

  66. Hamid then attended Harvard Law School, graduating in 1997. Finding corporate law boring, he repaid his student loans by working for several years as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company in New York City.

It’s hard to believe that Hamid found law school exciting but corporate law boring. I suspect that his affirmative action trail came to an end at a place where real money was at stake, and the partners at his law firm found him wanting in talent and energy. They weren’t going to hand profit sharing to Hamid just for being the affable token tea boy on the legal team. As per usual, the partners found him a high paying temporary corporate gig to break his fall. Just like the partners at Sidney Austin found Michelle Obama a BS diversity job at UChicago Hospital. I wonder whether it’s the case as well that for Muslim Southeast Asians in the West “religious fanatic” is coded as low status, so perceiving the son of a University Professor who himself matriculated Princeton and Harvard Law as a potential religious nut who could commit acts of terrorism was just a tremendous blow to his ego that he’s never gotten over. Perhaps Hamid is like a kid who escaped some small town in Nebraska and acquired elite credentials and who hates that part of himself which has origins in an ordinary unremarkable American place – for the upwardly mobile American hating Trump voters is his way of distancing himself from his own origins. Except the wrinkle is that post 9/11 everyone was commanded not to draw any connection between Islam and acts of terrorism committed by Muslims, and Hamid’s racial solidarity with his backwards cousins in some small Pakistani village is too strong – he can’t make a show of hating cousin Mohammed, but the insult requires some sort of expression that is more socially and politically useful.

Is “Mohsin Hamid” unfamiliar with tanning salons?

What follows sometimes feels like a curious thought experiment — or Tucker Carlson’s worst nightmare, a racist fever dream of “the great replacement theory.”

I like how they name checked Tucker Carlson.

  73. The real tragedy is that once the last white man disappear, Mr. Hamid and co. will not be able to steal (excuse me, repurpose) good literary ideas from them. Woke Creativity seems to be narrowly fixated on “what if X was about race and how non-Whites are amazing?”

  74. How about a story of a black man who wakes up one day to discover he is a handsome white man.
He awaits the cavalcade of privilege that is now his,and at first it seems he is correct.
People look at him, they dont avert their eyes so much. They’re friendly, they will converse with him a bit. They dont seem to fear him as much.
He is both pleased and angered. He loses his temper over a minor incident with a white woman and,to his dismay, she appears to feign fear at his outburst and he is threatened with arrest! ” WTF,” he thinks,”Do they know I’m black?”
He is hired for a good job.
    ” A ha! I wouldn’t get this if I was a poc!”
But he is continually harassed! You come in late, constantly, you take lunch too long, your work is shoddy, you’re rude and hostile to people, they say. You bug them!
    One day he is fired.
He loses his temper and argues strenuously thats its their fault. He gets so angry. He hits a manager.
” OK, I fucked up! What’s the big deal!?”, he cries as the police arrive and very unceremoniously subdue him.
Now he has “caught a charge.”
Things look bleak for him as he struggles to make bail.
” Its like they knew! They knew I was black!Something gave it away. Damn it,what?”
    A fellow prisoner approaches.
“Sup man?,” he says. But the black prisoner does not look too friendly…

Actually, there's some Pakistani (?) Sikh commenter on unz, sher singh, who does just that.

In John Updike's "Brazil" (spoilers), a white Brazilian woman runs off with a black man. They end up in the jungle where a spell switches their colors. They return to the city, live out a middle class life, then the black-now-white man gets killed on the beach by child thieves (as I recall).

Another good example of non-white mentality. No matter how much attention Israel-Palestine conflict has been given, Muslims keep saying that the "racist" West cares more about Ukraine( where there is a full scale war going on with hundreds of thousands of casualties) than about Palestine. Non-whites will whole heartedly support their own tribe and expect white people to do the same even at their own expense. The saddest thing is White people will always fall for it. You keep seeing these tweets with tens of thousands of upvotes from Muslims.

Indians who defend the British empire are nearly always low caste. They regard the British era, and the first few decades of independence, as a brief period of Indian history when they weren’t kicked around by the Brahmins.

Gandhi also opposed caste discrimination and was famously killed for it. However his view prevailed after independence, with the new generation of nationalists regarding caste discrimination as a source of national weakness, as well as an injustice.

This however has changed since the rise of the BJP in the 1990s. The Brahmins are back, and they don’t care what you think.

It takes an incredible amount of arrogance for Indians to move to Britain and expect to immediately be upper-class there. It also shows they really don't understand native British culture, intellectual learning, or Britain's last 1000 years of achievements.

However, the very fact that they moved to Britain, the country that ruled them and which they were taught to despise, shows secret massive cultural envy.

    Replies: @Jim Don Bob

  113. *What if the taint of Whiteness can never be removed?

A Glimpse of a Future Without White People
Mohsin Hamid’s The Last White Man is a book about race metamorphosis—and the seduction of power.

    WHITENESS IS A seduction.

    Stupid sexy Whiteness….

    Whiteness is also an illusion.

    …..unlike, say, Blackness…

These are the twin motifs on which Pakistani writer Mohsin Hamid props up The Last White Man, his new novel about race metamorphosis and human morality. Anchored in the bare and elegiac prose Hamid has made his trademark style, the book springboards from a single unexplained incident. Anders, a white man, awakens one morning to a new reality: his skin has “turned a deep and undeniable brown.”

But have his facial features and hair texture stayed the same? If Brad Pitt suddenly had James Brown’s complexion….

And for the benefit of the guys in the back row, “Anders” means “man.” Get it? A novel with the title THE LAST WHITE MAN focuses on a character called “man”……Yeesh, that’s the kinda thing that I expect in a community college creative writing class…

The transformation, of which Anders’ is the first—but not the only, and certainly not the last—elicits worthy exploration. What if whiteness were suddenly gone? Would the social order of life come undone? Would anything change?

The first question in my mind is: What are BIPOCs gonna do? I mean, we’re talking about a Rachel Dolezal x 1,000,000,000- scale problem….I mean, if ya can’t eyeball YT, how are ya gonna keep the anti-YT coalition together….

The sequence of events that follows plays into an ancient fear, that of The Other. (One’s need to estrange, Toni Morrison has said, is “a desperate attempt to confirm one’s own self as normal.”) For Anders, confusion bubbles. Panic swells. Initially, he flirts with thoughts of violence after realizing the transformation is irreversible. “He wanted to kill the colored man who confronted him here in his home,” Hamid writes, “to extinguish the life animating this other’s body, to leave nothing standing but himself, as he was before.”

Lemme tell ya, YT is truly deranged….

It’s understandable why those who benefit from a particular standing would do anything to preserve it. The conscious seduction of power, of understanding the privileges from which one benefits and the life it affords, is, in part, about the necessity of control. I’d probably be upset and a little sad if I lost all of that, too.

See, Whiteness is nothing but an unholy combination of power and privilege….Unlike BIPOCness…

“No one there at the bar looked entirely comfortable, not the bartender, and not the men huddled in the only occupied booth … not any of these dark people bathed in the bar-colored light, trying to find their footing in a situation so familiar and yet so strange,” Oona observes. Or “maybe everyone looked the same as they always did,” she thought. It is only after “the whiskey settles into her belly” that she realizes that “the difference was gone.”

How drunk do you have to be in order to not see race? Blackout drunk?

Whiteness physically recedes but it never vanishes completely.

Maybe we need some kind of Jean-Jacques Dessalines-style solution to the Whiteness problem….

It has a psychological grip; lest we forget, identity is more than a badge of flesh.

Whiteness is more than skin deep; it goes all the way to the soul…

The newly “dark people” of Hamid’s epic appear to embrace different outlooks but, really, what has happened is more of a costume swap than an adjustment of the soul. The characters operate in a kind of cultural drag, entombed in an unrecognizable self, a sort of living elegy of their former whiteness. What was once marked as difference is not understood anew; instead, they continue to see through white eyes, in spite of their brown skin.

Maybe if we removed the eyes from every YT…

*Posted this elsewhere, but it should go here.

    https://www.wired.com/story/mohsin-hamid-the-last-white-man/

  114. The darkening that befalls Anders is happening all over this unnamed town. Everywhere, formerly White people are waking up with skin “a deep and undeniable brown.”

Vaguely curious: Would a light-skinned Pakistani like Mr Hamid be affected by this mysterious event?Or would his BIPOC status protect his relative pallor, making him (and his fellow light-skinned South Asians) the new white people?
