At her annual summer press conference, German Chancellor Angela Merkel strongly criticized the US leader for his recent diatribe against Democratic congresswomen, saying it went against America’s strength.

Addressing US President Donald Trump’s recent attacks against a group of minority congresswomen, Merkel clearly showed her disdain.

I disagree with you. Certainly, unmanned has pride of place in science and in the space economy. But manned space is where it is at. The conquest of space will never take place without it and the shrinking of NASA’s budgets reflects it. Presenting things as either one or the other is counter-productive. The conquest of the Americas was not a function of how many expeditionary forces were sent to do this or that, but of the colonization efforts that gave the demographic heft necessary for complex human activities and divisions of labor. It is exactly this critical mass that we have been missing in space economy, which the lowering of launch costs may fix. Certainly, it is difficult, but these efforts require upfront costs to tackle, otherwise you will always be tethered to where these investment have already been made, whether it is a particular technological track, or a geographic space etc. Look at how, with some exceptions (China), new cities are not being built today. The existing ones are expanding. That initial settlement effort and the sunk costs enable greater productivity and concentrations of infrastructure and resources later.

So too must happen with manned space, at least until we have confirmation that our life cycle, as we know it, cannot take place in space.

And what you said also reminds me of an article by Zubrin, in which he states that one of the problems of space exploration is extreme risk aversion, especially because of the political fallout of failure and especially of human casualties. The less willing you are to assume this, in war as well as in science, the more timid you are, even to the point of being counterproductive. And this philosophy also underpins unmanned missions, where the marginal cost of added safety has become almost prohibitive, as managers chase the elusive certainty of success. Thus, you end up with one probe with 95% chances of success, rather than two probes, each with 90%. This was his example and I realize it is just for rhetoric. But it is compelling.

And this also affects programs like Hubble, as Zubrin illustrates

    https://reason.com/archives/2012/01/26/how-much-is-an-astronauts-life-worth

In January 2004, Sean O’Keefe, then NASA’s administrator, announced that he was canceling the agency’s planned space shuttle mission to save, repair, and upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope, thereby sentencing the Hubble to death by equipment failure and eventual total destruction upon re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere due to orbital decay. According to O’Keefe, the February 2003 explosion of the space shuttle Columbia showed how risky such telescope-maintenance flights were. As a responsible government official, he said, he could not authorize such a perilous venture.

I think the real problem is the conditioning of the public to expect heroics and flag planting rather than real progress. It is cads vs dads for space programs. Zubrin’s Case for Mars book contrasts the olf NASA plan for a fleet of ships to Mars to carry everything they needed for a three day jaunt on the surface to his barebones and much riskier plan that would nevertheless have given astronauts two years on the surface to do science.

The contrast between NASA’s current attitude toward risk and that of earlier explorers is stark. Neither Columbus nor Lewis and Clark would have imagined demanding 99.999 percent safety assurances as a precondition for their expeditions. Under such a standard, no human voyages of exploration would ever have been attempted. For those courageous souls who sought and found the paths that took our species from its ancestral home in the Kenyan Rift Valley to every continent and clime of the globe, it was enough that the game was worth the candle and that they had a fighting chance to win.

During its Apollo days, NASA had a similar attitude because Apollo was mission driven. It was called into being by John F. Kennedy, a former torpedo boat commander, and the men who flew it—the younger brothers of those who had stormed beaches and machine gun nests to liberate Europe and Asia—were quite prepared to put their necks on the line to further the cause and expand the frontiers of freedom. It’s when the space program lacks a mission that it cannot bear risk. Instead, it (and we) can only recoil in horror at the spectacle of the Columbia crew—which included Israeli Col. Ilan Ramon, the pilot who led the daring raid that destroyed Saddam Hussein’s Osirak nuclear bomb factory—dying on a flight devoted to ant farms, recycled-urine-based finger paints, and other science fair experiments.

With 33 people per square kilometer, we can hardly go jogging without getting an elbow in the face. In rainy Florida it is 136 and the ocean is rising, leaving us all like penguins perched on a melting iceberg under a hot sun, and if we get any more immigrants, we will not have enough room in our concentration camps for them, and there will not be enough McDonalds to meet the demand for french fries.

October 1942: First rocket launch capable of reaching outer space (V-2; Germany) [or, “Wright Brothers +38.8 years”] (quietly inaugurating “the age of space travel” in earnest, after early tests dating to the late 1920s)

    [18 years, 9 months elapse]

April 1961: First man in outer space (Gagarin; USSR) [or, “Wright Brothers +57.33 years”] (note: If Germany had either not fought, or quickly won, “the war,” the first man in space likely would have been several years earlier still; plausible scenario for a German in space by 1955?).

    [8 years, 4 months elapse]

July 1969: First man on the Moon (Armstrong, Aldrin, Collins; USA) [or, “Wright Brothers +65.6 years”]

    ___________________________

February 2035 is the point at which we, the living, will be as far away, in time, from the Armstrong-Aldrin-Collins moon landing (July 1969) as they were from Kitty Hawk (Dec. 1903), i.e., equal intervals of +65.6 years.

We can already kind of see the outlines of what our world will be like in 2035. In some very serious ways, the state of the USA/West in 2035 will be much worse than that which people enjoyed in 1969. Just as a rocket has an ascent-descent trajectory, so does a civilization, some might be tempted to say.

Others, myself included, are inclined to say something more like: “Some people did something” to Western civilization between the inauguration of the age of space travel (Oct. 1942) and the present day; even by 1969, it looks like we were already partly running on inertia, with the poison already slowly spreading in the system.

Because they are sisters of color. Madame Merkel, who is a bit red, can understand.

Robert Bridge writes more correct thoughs than a head of state queen wasp with her attendance can manage: America stumbling towards civil war one terrible tweet at a time

Unfortunately, that is not the end of the story. Donald Trump, sensing blood inside of the Democratic Party, launched a salvo of Tweets aimed at the ‘four horsewomen of the Apocalypse’ where he advised them to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.” Of the four, only Ilhan Omar was born outside the US, in Somalia.

Needless to say, the response from the Democrats came fast, furious and very clumsy. Nancy Pelosi, fresh from reprimanding the freshmen females, fell from her horse as she was forced to side with ‘the Squad’ against the president’s terrific tirade. She went so far as to call Trump’s tweets “racist” on the House floor, with yet more promises of impeachment proceedings against the Republican leader. Trump, meanwhile, used the opening to slam the progressive congresswomen of being anti-Israel, pro Al-Qaeda and supporters of Communism. If this is a taste of things to come as we head into the 2020 elections, we may be in for many more ugly surprises.

her entire work life from 1991 to 2008 was a series of patronage positions with no discernible operational measures of competence (but boffo raises every time he won a higher office). She seems to have an interest in her children, travel, and decorative arts, but not a whole lot else. The smart money says she’s about as likely to run for something as is Caroline Kennedy.

She’d run if it involved no work at all. But running does involve work – traveling, learning your lines, doing interviews, etc. Given how lazy and dumb she appears to be, based on her Princeton essay, she’d probably come off more like Maxine Waters than Barack Obama on the campaign trail.

So, despite both her and her husband getting into Ivy League schools on mediocre ability, after “winning” state office in a safe blue state and receiving a comfy paycheck for doing practically nothing, and after her racial group has been pampered and excused of all its bad behavior for decades and included in all our best movies and television, it was only when the whites gave her the keys to the kingdom did she feel even a tiny bit of gratefulness.

“Has anyone seen a picture of pregnant Michelle Obama?”

YouTube took down a funny video claiming she’s a man after Trump won. The evidence cited in the video (brow shape, finger length, shoulder width, etc) would be convincing for any Asian or white Caucasian, but Africans often have manish features while technically still being female. It therefore wouldn’t surprise me if they look less pregnant, too.

In the past, it seemed the woman holding the title of “Most Admired” was the First Lady–Jacqueline Kennedy, Pat Nixon, Betty Ford, Rosalynn Carter, Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton, etc. A large part of that is name recognition, of course. However, with Trump occupying the White House, the press has decided not to make too much of Melania, but instead pretend Michelle O is still First Lady, since they like her best. Wouldn’t Melania make a more obvious cover girl for women’s magazines? But no, it’s still Michelle.

Keep in mind that on the inside Mrs. Obama is quite girly. Her interests are fashion, decorating, food, gardening, travel, etc.

She’s always resented getting stuck with her WNBA power forward body and refused to play basketball when young, even though her 6’5″ brother, currently an executive with the NBA Knicks, has enjoyed a nice life because of basketball. And I’ve never heard of her once playing golf with her golf fanatic husband.

There is no indication that she’s dumb; dumb people don’t pass the Illinois bar exam. She just isn’t interested in the things partisan Democrats pushing her want to be interested in. If she actually were lazy, she’d have quit working entirely when her first child was born and made it clear to her husband that she expected him to build a career in law or cadge an administrative position at the University of Chicago sufficient to pay the bills. (It’s a matter of public record that she’d lost interest in law by 1991 (and most associates wash out of BigLaw and land elsewhere) and a matter of record that decorative arts are an interest, because she told people the one thing she liked about fundraisers was seeing what other people had done with their homes).

Take a pill. It’s an idle question and people give the first name that pops into their head. Mrs. Nixon topped that poll again and again.

The problem, of course, is that women gain respect among their immediate social networks. People acclaimed for actual accomplishments (outside the entertainment world) are overwhelmingly male. And even when someone is a public figure for their achievements and known to millions, they still might not be recognized by most people. (I’m recalling one of those name recognition surveys taken around about 1985 which demonstrated that only about 35% of the public recognized the name of the Secretary of State).

If people answered the survey honestly, they’d say their grandmother or offer the name of one of their better supervisors from years past. (Or take the term ‘admire’ quite literally and give the name of some babe).

I haven’t noticed that. Generally there is quite a bit of detailed information on both parents, where they came from, whether they are secular, and so on.

Nowadays, with a rich online Jewish media, above a certain point of fame the Jewish media will mention or cover a person, and that is easily Googleable. But Wikipedia is more detailed.

I invite the great Steve Sailer to write about the (getting very ugly) conflict in my backyard, the Obama’s very temporary power base in Hyde Park SS of Chicago.

The Obama elites have managed to steal a huge chunk of Chicago’s sacred, free and open Lake Front Park in Jackson Park (Named after Andrew Jackson not Jessie Jackson) for something called:

“The Obama Presidential Center” which includes a 22 story high rise in the Jackson Park. This Obamanation was originally president as the tradional ex president’s “Presidential Library” but now everyone admits it isn’t any kind of library and won’t have any presidential papers or books.

Local park loving White (heavily Jewish) Liberals have put up a furious fight over this theft of public park land, they’ve also noticed that the Obama elite (includes Melody Hopkins, Oprah) was offered open land West of the Hyde Park Lakefront in a predominately poor Black African American area, but the elite refused it. The Obamas and this Black (sort of Black elite) will only come, work and play on Chicago’s beautiful lakefront, downtown on the Gold Coast. This Black elite wants the votes of poor Black Black African Americans but they don’t want to mix with them, send their children to public schools with them or really do much of anything for them.

Steve Sailer should write his follow up to the “Half Blood Prince” on this subject of the Jackson Park Presidential Center.

The University of Chicago Maroon and the Hyde Park Herald have written extensively on this subject.
