From 1984:

As soon as all the corrections which happened to be necessary in any particular number of The Times had been assembled and collated, that number would be reprinted, the original copy destroyed, and the corrected copy placed on the files in its stead. This process of continuous alteration was applied not only to newspapers, but to books, periodicals, pamphlets, posters, leaflets, films, sound-tracks, cartoons, photographs — to every kind of literature or documentation which might conceivably hold any political or ideological significance. Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date. In this way every prediction made by the Party could be shown by documentary evidence to have been correct, nor was any item of news, or any expression of opinion, which conflicted with the needs of the moment, ever allowed to remain on record. All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and reinscribed exactly as often as was necessary.

From the New York Times:

What’s in red is what the NYT memoryholed:

“Crimestop means the faculty of stopping short, as though by instinct, at the threshold of any dangerous thought. It includes the power of not grasping analogies, of failing to perceive logical errors, of misunderstanding the simplest arguments if they are inimical to Ingsoc, and of being bored or repelled by any train of thought which is capable of leading in a heretical direction. Crimestop, in short, means protective stupidity.” — 1984

Jews are not special at all. Their achievements aren’t, too. It’s not nicer to be a Jew than – being an Eskimo. Ok, there might be no Jewish Eskimos, but that would then be just another sober reason that the world does indeed need more diversity to spread more of the real différence = sameness into the arctic winter. Shortly thereafter, the story of Rolling Stone’s reporting failure would eclipse the larger problem of the systematic abuse and mistreatment of women across college fraternities and beyond – even as it would help inspire a new commitment to tenacious sexual assault reporting down the road.

When I have brought this issue up in various comments sections, the hasbara invariably respond with some variation of the “superior cultural traits” argument. Why are Jews so ridiculously overrepresented in the Ivy League? Because they study harder than the goyim complainers who are sitting around playing video games. It’s just that simple, you see.

The real answer, of course, is that in addition to decent IQs and a culture that values success, Jews aggressively, assiduously, religiously help their own to the detriment of other groups, while, at the same time, literally making a federal case out of it whenever the goyim try using the same tactic. And why shouldn’t they do this if they can get away with it? They are not encumbered by a Christian sense of right and wrong–which Nietzsche, of course, called a slave morality.

In all fairness, Ashkenazi’s are the one legitimate, self-documented case of Magic Dirt / Tragic Dirt (MDTD).

In Anglo countries, it’s “we succeeded despite 2000 years of persecution. Suck it and die, goyem!”

In Israel, it’s “hmmmm….okay, so we’re not exactly hitting our existential benchmarks, but understand we don’t have many natural resources. The natural resources are holding us back, mmmmkay?”

In Anglo countries, it’s “we invented nuclear physics!”

In Israel, it’s “hmmmm….okay, so we couldn’t exactly figure nuclear physics out, so we stole what we needed from the US for our nuclear weapons. Granted, South Africa didn’t have to do this, but we don’t have as many natural resources as resource-rich South Africa, mmmkay?”’

    It goes on and on.

So technically, there is one case of MDTD. Granted, another explanation is the institutions of Magic Anglo Nations (MAN), but that would be an old trope about parasites and what not.

So let’s say it’s The Dirt.

I can’t find the table now but I once asked here if anyone knew the average IQ of the Inuit . I found a table that listed the Inuit as the third highest average IQ . I assumed that the environment being so harsh would select for a high IQ . I can’t find any info on desert nomads but the average IQs of the Middle Eastern and African countries where they reside is low . However the average IQ of the central Asian peoples is in the 90’s . The average IQ in Turkey is 90 and the Ottoman Turks came out of Central Asia from a nomadic way of life in a harsh desert environment . But then the Afghan’s average is IQ 83 , inbreeding maybe ? I always figured that a high level of civilization would tend to depress IQ as the struggle to survive was no longer as much of a challenge but that doesn’t seem to be the case . OTOH we’ve only been subsidizing retards for less than a century so I guess the jury is still out on that question . Anyway here’s a table of world IQs for you to peruse :

The moral of the story is: populations can have genetic diseases if they also provide a useful advantage to carriers. And if those genetic diseases are limited to a single group, we expect them to provide a useful advantage for that group, but not others. Might the Jewish genetic diseases provide some advantage? And why would that advantage be limited to Jews?

Most of the Jewish genetic diseases cluster into two biological systems – the sphingolipid system and the DNA repair system. This is suspicious. It suggests that they’re not just random. They’re doing something specific. Both of these systems are related to neural growth and neural branching. Might they be doing something to the brain?

Gaucher’s disease, one of the Ashkenazi genetic diseases, appears to increase IQ. CHH obtained a list of all of the Gaucher’s patients in Israel. They were about 15 times more likely than the Israeli average to be in high-IQ occupations like scientist or engineer; CHH calculate the probability that this is a coincidence to be 4×10^-19.

Torsion dystonia, another Ashkenazi genetic disease, shows a similar pattern. CHH find ten reports in the literature where doctors comment on unusual levels of intelligence in their torsion dystonia patients. Eldridge, Harlan, Cooper, and Riklan tested 14 torsion dystonia patients and found an average IQ of 121; another similar study found an average of 117. Torsion dystonia is pretty horrendous, but sufferers will at least get the consolation prize of being really, really smart.

“Superior cultural traits” translates to environmental factors. So what it says is they haven’t been given a chance or, in some cases such as descendants of slaves, were actively denied a chance by others. White males, through slavery and Jim Crow, fostered the African American culture. They, not blacks, are responsible for it.

so we stole what we needed from the US for our nuclear weapons

This is just a lie. Israel was given (did not steal) most of its nuclear technology by the French, who were its allies at the time (at a time (1956) when the US government establishment was rather cold to Israel). Ostensibly the reactor was for “peaceful purposes” but it was obvious that the Israelis were going to us it to build weapons.

    http://users.ox.ac.uk/~ssfc0005/The%20Protocol%20of%20Sevres%201956%20Anatomy%20of%20a%20War%20Plot.html

This was a side agreement to the Protocol of Sèvres, which was a secret agreement between Israel, Britain and France to overthrow Nasser and get the Suez Canal back. The US strongly disapproved of this plan.

With this victory Twitter has now begun the process of preparing for the cancellation of Cochran. His gay germ theory is being closely examined for crimethink in various accounts. Cochran is being very quiet now. If he can hold out for two or three weeks, the storm will pass.

I notice that his qualifications are being questioned: He only has a physics degree, no biology or whatever degree. To me, a physics degree means you’re really smart. A biology degree, less so, A gender studies degree much, much less so. Being really smart is more important than having had lower and upper division courses in a subject. Smart people can read books, track down experts and ask for help, publish and absorb feedback, and so on.

But this silo-ization of knowledge and expertise is something that helps the progressive left, since it depends on credentials, the issuance of which at the graduate level is coming more and more under the control of progressives, and dumb people are getting credentials. Smart guy? But what about your DIE statement? What have you done for diversity?

You might know that UCLA has the world’s most extreme diversity administration, under Jerry Kang. UCLA law professor Stephen Bainbridge is up for a merit raise and whenever your status changes in any way at UCLA you have to submit a DIE statement. Conservative Bainbridge submitted one emphasizing viewpoint and religious diversity. It will be interesting to watch what happens.

    https://www.professorbainbridge.com/professorbainbridgecom/2019/12/i-submit-herewith-my-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-statement-for-my-merit-raise-at-uclaw.html

A survey of U.S. law professors in general found that white Democratic professors (both male and female), Jewish professors, and nonreligious professors “account for most (or all) of the overrepresentation among racial, gender, religious, and ideological groups in law teaching.”

Conservative students at UCLA have been “harassed, stalked, and threatened

Because conservative students and students of faith often feel alienated and estranged in an environment that is so relentlessly liberal and secular, I have made particular efforts to reach out to and support such students. I have served as a mentor for leaders of The Federalist Society and Christian Law Students Association. I have given talks to both organizations. I taught a Perspectives on law and Lawyering seminar devoted to Catholic Social Thought and the Law, which gave students—whether Catholic or not—an opportunity to consider how their faith (or lack thereof) related to the law and an opportunity to learn about a coherent body of Christian scholarship that might inform their lives as lawyers.

κύδεϊ (kudei) is a half-decent guess at a plural form of the original (κῦδος – glory; renown), but κύδεϊ has been used in contexts where it’s properly interpreted as singular – e.g, in Iliad 1:405

ὅς ῥα παρὰ Κρονίωνι καθέζετο κύδεϊ γαίων:

    Well spotted.

You could also have made the point that in their natural habitat (the hovels of Eastern Europe) the Ashkenazi somehow failed to fully exploit their legendary[1] genius.

A huge concentration of seichel and pilpul, basically left to do its own thing for several centuries… somehow failing to invent calculus, electricity, space travel, the internal combustion engine, or general computing.

It’s almost as if environment matters. A lot.

If you’re fully σ “more genius” than the goyim, the adversity of Eastern European shitholes is enough to drag you down so far that you contribute less than the Lithuanian peasantry.

But adverse environment can’t possibly be a reason for African (or African-American) underachievement.

    One rule for some…

    Henry Harpending (1944-2016)

When Paul Ehrlich wrote Human Natures(2000), he returned to the conventional wisdom that cultural evolution had largely replaced genetic evolution in our species. As one became more important, the other became less so. […]

In 2007, Henry Harpending turned this thinking on its head with a study on changes to the human genome over the past 80,000 years. With four other researchers, he found that these changes actually sped up more than a hundred-fold some 10,000 years ago, when hunting and gathering gave way to farming, which in turn led to population growth and larger, more complex societies.[…]

I would like to say that Henry was allowed to work in peace. That’s how things are in a free society, no? Unfortunately, he was repeatedly warned to stop, subtly at first and then not so subtly. Last year, the Southern Poverty Law Center added his name to its list of “extremists”—a list that, curiously, omits people whose skin is darker than peaches and cream.[…]

Yes, a culture will make it harder for some individuals to survive and reproduce, thereby removing certain predispositions and personality types from the gene pool, but this process is no more a “eugenic policy” than is natural selection itself. It’s silly to use words like “eugenics” and “policy” for something that happens unconsciously in any culture, even in small bands of hunter-gatherers.
A strange role reversal has taken place between the long-dead KKK and the SPLC. It’s now the latter that tries to enforce its notions of good behavior through intimidation, veiled threats, public shaming, and blacklisting. It’s now the SPLC that is conspiring, literally, to deny people their civil rights.

Anyway, Henry Harpending seemed unfazed by the SPLC’s blacklisting. He was apparently one of those rare tenured professors who put his tenure to good use and blissfully went on doing what he had always been doing. I wish he had lived longer. He was irreplaceable not so much because he knew more but because he was unafraid to say and act on what he knew. I will miss him.

While reconstruction was a bear, Hiroshima and Nagasaki are thriving cities today. Pripyat near Chernobyl could have been rehabilitated, but the Soviets had so much real estate, they abandoned it. Besides, Pripyat was never really an important city apart from the Chernobyl facility, whose workers lived there.

Whereas both Hiroshima and Nagasaki had been important cities for close to a century before the A-bombs were dropped.

Two of the groups I find most insufferable unfortunately seem to include almost everybody: Those who think Jews are responsible for all the world’s problems, and those who think that Jews are too sainted for any of them ever to do anything wrong. Indeed, trying to occupy the middle of the road between these two polarities is a good way to get run over. This despite the fact that if there is any reason to think Jews are more moral than other groups, I have yet to see the evidence. So, Stephens is being just as irrational as the NYT.

Regarding the NYT, the proper question to ask these geniuses is if Harpending were to declare two and two to be four, would it become false since it was said by a “racist”? Or would it become the case that arithmetic is no longer worth knowing if “racists” were to believe in such things.

In saner times, what the NYT did would have been dismissed as a violation of the logical fallacy called poisoning the well:

When one of the tenants would sue them the building owners would say “Ahh, those schvartzers are animals. As a related aside I’ve recently discovered the multiple versions of 1984 on YouTube. All for the most part are good and interesting in their way, though I am somewhat partial to Michael Radford’s version filmed in and around London during the year 1984 itself.

Westinghouse produced a made for television version in 1953 starring Eddie Albert and Lorne Greene, with Robert Culp being the telescreen voice. Martin Landau has an uncredited bit part while ‘Goldstein’ name has been changed to ‘Cassandra’.

BBC produced it’s famous TV version in 1954 with Peter Cushing and Donald Pleasance. Julia in both the BBC and Westinghouse versions was a Jewish actress. The ‘enemy’ Eurasian soldier looks more than anything to be an everyday WWII era US GI.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip claimed to have watched it. The BBC version made quite a splash in the UK and was seen as highly controversial.

Another version, the most forgettable imo, was a theatrical movie made in 1956. Again with Donald Pleasance being cast. A pregnant Jan Sterling had the role of Julia.

Then there’s Michael Radford’s 1984, starring John Hurt and Suzanna Hamilton, the best of the lot in my view.

All of them appeared to have borrowed from each other rather heavily in regards to which portion of the book made it to the screen.

George Lucas in his 1971 dystopic THX-1138 also cast Donald Pleasance and looked to have borrowed it’s own ‘Big Brother’ type imagery from the 1953 Westinghouse vision of BB.

There are two kinds of knowledge: personal opinion, or subjective knowledge, upon which we are the world’s foremost experts on our own opinions; we can’t be wrong. Are we talking about Harpending’s opinions here?

Assuming not, we’re talking about the second type of knowledge, which is rational and objective. The point of the logical fallacy poisoning the well is that objective statements are true no matter who makes them, and regardless of how unpopular they may be.

    OT:

Well, I’ve seen the Joker movie, I have been wanting to since Steve’s review. The very high 8.7 rating on imdb coupled with the 69% on rt is an indication that the Jewish elite find the movie problematic, along with the snippets I have heard from some of them. But why?

    Spoilers.

Initially, a non-white gang attacks Fleck. He is given a gun by white crypto WN co-worker Randall who calls the gang savages. It turns out that he was given a gun just to make him lose his job so as to pose less competition. This is the typical “gotcha” seen in so much Jewish entertainment. WN hero… is actually a villain.

Fleck is then beaten up by 3 very white very goy yuppies, who look like they could have stepped out of a Leyendecker poster. He murders them, somewhat justifiably at least judging by their bizarre behaviour. Fleck develops a love interest with a black female, who shows kindness to him.

The championing of these 3 Wall Street yuppies by Thomas Wayne acts to build a communist style uprising of clowns who riot in a generic poor vs white goy rich people conflict.

Murray Franklin’s show is very obviously controlled by a Jewish producer, this behind the scenes part of the movie is reminiscent of Network. I don’t think the producer is even explicitly said to be Jewish but it’s pretty obvious to anyone who is familiar enough with Jews.

Now, why the Jewish angst over this movie? (Mostly the movie runs according to the standard Jewish movie playbook, seems there is not much cause to be upset.) I think it stems from 2 or 3 things. The first is the depiction of a non-white, Africanish gang being criminal (even though it is only used as a foil to make a WN seem nice before becoming a villain). Never mind that every other black in the film is good.

Then there is the Jewish producer type manipulating what the public sees, pulling the strings. I think this is what the more intelligent Jews find uncomfortable. The wokesters would prefer that the former Worldstar type activity be removed, and they don’t like the idea that their multicult world is dystopic.

Maybe a distant third problem might be the idea that villainizing Wall Street could be counterproductive. If there is a pogrom against Wall Street it won’t just be the Leyendecker characters singled out.

The movie itself – yes, great performances, but more fun to talk about than watch, as Steve says. Aside from the political and the influences, the most interesting things about the movie are determining Fleck’s body count (did he kill the usher? Did he kill the black girl?), and if Fleck was actually adopted or not. The fact that Penny was both delusional and narcissistic, and also that Arthur evidently has great man type ability like his putative father (I disagree that he is low IQ, just that plain old standup without associated criminality was not his strength), are both genetic pointers to the truth that the HBD crowd would pick up on, as well as smart Jews who don’t drink their own koolaid. So the evidence would point to TW paying to cover it up.

TW is a kind of Trump character in this telling, from a Jewish perspective. A somewhat crooked wealthy white, maybe with some Jewish DNA (Joaquin is 50% and TW looks somewhat similar), who campaigns on a veiled WN platform which is of course, mostly baseless because those white goys mostly had it coming. Who gets assassinated in the movie.

“Harpending “the racist” was not expounding on math, he was expounding on racial matters. Therefore his pronouncements in this area, while not automatically false or not worth knowing, should at least be regarded in light of his known biases.”

    Jack,

I knew Henry for two decades. Over time, I saw him become more convinced that human populations differ not only in their anatomy but also in aspects of mind and behavior that have a sizeable genetic component. This was not a change driven by “known biases.” It was driven by what he learned and discovered.

He was especially influenced by the findings of John Hawks’ 2007 study (of which he was a co-author). The study showed that human genetic evolution accelerated more than a hundred-fold 10,000 years ago. By then, humans had already spread over the entire world. They weren’t adapting to new natural environments. They were adapting to culture. That’s why he and Greg Cochran went on to write their book on the acceleration of gene-culture coevolution.

I dislike the argument of “pre-existing biases.” First, it’s anti-intellectual. Why bother debating when you can just say the other person is “racist” or “sexist” or “transphobe” or whatever? Second, that argument can be turned against the very people who use it. Don’t NYT editors have pre-existing biases? Don’t you? Doesn’t everyone? How can we change our minds on anything if we have no pre-existing thoughts or beliefs?

  124. @JimDandy

I highly doubt Jews were so disproportionately represented in the Ivy League 50 years ago.

College admissions could be the first chapter in the Big Book of Jewish Chutzpah. In its early days, IQ testing was ferociously promoted by Jews trying to enter prestigious Anglo institutions in the name of meritocracy; now that they’ve seized control of admissions, the mere suggestion that standardized testing could tell us about an applicant’s potential is reprehensible. You see, what really tells us about an applicant is a personal essay and list of extracurriculars, and if this happens to include piling foreskins down at Temple Beth El, well, so be it.

To take one example- in our boomer posters’ lifetimes, Northwestern’s gone from being openly hostile to Jewish applicants to being a place where goyishe kops might be advised to cultivate that weird effeminate creaky voice nebbish suburban Jews have.

*Everybody* has some ideology and some petty biases of some kind. It’s human nature. The more you think you are an exception to the rule, the more of a hold they typically have on you.

What distinguishes a person with a degree of mental agility and creativity is the ability to own this, to learn, and to have a willingness to understand realities that might contradict your own world-view. Otherwise, you might be able to memorize by rote, but nothing more.

  126. Jack D says:
    @Peter Frost

I agree with you -we all have our “biases” (and I don’t just mean in the sense of being racially biased). If you know any scientists, you know that they tend to be highly opinionated about things involving their field (and sometimes beyond it) and that once you reach the cutting edge opinions among scientists can differ greatly.

However, when it comes to matters with racial implications, only certain kinds of biases are permitted and other kinds make you a “racist” and beyond the range of respectable opinion. If Harpending had been a physicist or a number theorist, he would not have had this problem, but because his work touched on one of our society’s sore spots, he did.

If you have the “correct” sort of views, then you can be WILDLY biased and no one will fault you for it – if you turn out to be mistaken it’s only because you meant well and gave the benefit of the doubt to the egalitarian view. Someone like Gould made no pretense of objectivity. Only if you hold hereditarian views is your work automatically suspect (or beyond suspect – more extreme Leftists say that the conclusions of such a person (if he is even permitted to do such work, which he shouldn’t) can be dismissed even before you read them and you shouldn’t even allow your mind to be tainted with such filth. You can shout, “Nazi” at such a person and shut down all further inquiry. It’s really a very effective way of dealing with those that you disagree with, if you can get away with it. And it pays dividends – not only have you shouted down the “Nazi” but any young scientist in his right mind is not going to step in that minefield.

Jews didn’t underwrite MLK or create the NAACP expecting Blacks to “help Jews in return.”

Jews promoted Blacks to break down White hegemony and foster a more “tolerant and multicultural” society which is safer for the Jews.

Last time I saw a number it was in the vicinity of $3 million but maybe it’s higher now – you make a donation to the university and your kid gets in. This is entirely legit and open and above board. Harvard is a private university and if they want to sell their admission slots to the highest bidder, they have every right to do so.

What the coaches were doing was freelancing, like when the Best Buy employee “sells” you a TV that’s not his to sell out the back door, for a discount price. And of course Singer’s customers knew that was what they were buying, having their kids pose for phony pictures holding tennis rackets or in front of sailboats, etc. but they were too cheap (or not rich enough) to pay the full asking price at the cash register. And that’s why they, despite their deep qualification as Christians from way back which really should have brought them immunity, are going to jail.

  185. MEH 0910 says:
    @MEH 0910

From the Matthew Yglesias piece in Vox:

People who write grants and organize scientific experiments have not been incredibly eager to organize credible studies that would definitively answer whether or not it’s true that Ashkenazi Jews have above-average IQs. What we have instead is a series of non-ideal studies, often undertaken by somewhat disreputable researchers who appear motivated by a larger prurient interest in race science.

Brian Ferguson, a professor in the department of anthropology and sociology at Rutgers-Newark, concluded from his view of the fragmentary evidence that, “Taking all the information together, it is fair to say that most, though not all, studies give Ashkenazi descendants a higher IQ than non-Jewish whites. How much? Take your pick.”

An important thing to note, however, is that small average differences can have big impacts on outliers. Many people, for example, struggle intuitively to understand why a 3- or 4-degrees Celsius increase in average global temperatures could be catastrophic given that temperatures swing by that much all the time.

The reason, as shown here, is that even a small rightward shift of a bell curve leads to a wildly disproportionate increase in the number of extreme climate events.

That’s a chart about climate change specifically, but the same logic applies broadly to all kinds of domains. A difference in average intelligence levels that is not particularly large or noteworthy could lead to a drastic difference in the share of the group that is capable of doing Nobel-level work.

It’s possible to believe that IQ science is all bunk or that the studies showing an Ashkenazi IQ advantage are wrong, but if you believe those studies, they provide a fully adequate explanation for the phenomenon Stephens was investigating. There’s no need to posit a separate quality of thinking differently.

As debate about the column continued, it widened to include the editorial judgment of Times op-ed editor James Bennet (something that has been questioned before, both externally and internally).

    ******
Palace Intrigue: Indulging in the kind of Kremlinology specific to the goings on at the Times, some saw hints of a broader strategy in James Bennet’s support of writers like Stephens (as they did in the decision to anchor a major reporting effort on privacy in the Opinion section rather than news): Namely, a desire to impress publisher Arthur Gregg Sulzberger, and thus to gain his favor when it comes to choosing a successor for current executive editor Dean Baquet, who is expected to retire soon. Bennet’s main competition, according to some Times-watchers, is Metro editor Cliff Levy, although managing editor Joe Kahn is also said to be in the mix.

Ha ha. Oh, man, that’s so weak! You’re losing all credibility now. Sad!

(Then President Shimon Peres) regarded Yosef not only as a treasured friend but as his teacher and his rabbi. Speaking about his final encounter with Yosef, Peres said that his throat had been constricted with tears as he squeezed Yosef’s hand. “The hand that was still warm and I kissed his forehead which to me looked more noble than ever. When I squeezed his hand, I felt that I was squeezing the hand of history and when I kissed his forehead, I thought that I was kissing the majesty of Israel,” he said.

Yeah, if the Goyim were smart, they would do lots of things, including: addressing the fact that Jews aggressively help their own to the detriment of gentiles while, at the same time, literally making a federal case out of it whenever any other group tries the same tactic.

  189. @Peter Frost

The hope or whatever, that people should be without prejudices is understandable, even though it is practically impossible. We depend on our personal experiences and that is a structural limitation that is a part of the human condition; it would, therefore, be non-human or anti-human to ask that we’d be without prejudices. If people think, that they stand on the right side of history that’s ok. If they think that standing on the right side of history liberates them from being prejudiced, they’re wrong.

In hindsight, it is always easy to be without prejudices, because in hindsight we quite easily know what’s right or wrong (most of the time). It might well be, that this perspective is the one, that tricks people into believing that it would be possible and – easy, even, to let your prejudices behind.

Seen from a hermeneutic and/ or philosophical (neo-Kantian = Habermasian) perspective, the confusion arises as soon as people assume (or state) that moral/ ethical problems could be solved in the same way as those concerning the physical world. – With objective and methodological rigor! – But that is just not the case because moral/ethical problems are internally related with our selves (our personal /societal selves = our individual history) – and this frame of personal(=existential) reference ties them structurally with the by its very nature non-quantifiable realm of self-reflection/ identity (the self-reflective process which (at times) can help us to develop our moral and ethical identity and our – – – – proper selves).

As Gadamer put it: There is no direct connection between method (= objective science) and the questions of identity. We thrive on our prejudices (our histories). We all do so because we have to – – – since there is just no other civilized way out of our existential conundrums, except the illusory one which seeks firm ground in methodological failure.

These kinds of failures are very tempting because they thrive on the powerful methodological basis of our (powerful and impressive indeed) modern civilization. But to give up the distinction between existential and nomological (=scientific) questions, as attractive as it might look, is a regressive and dehumanizing endeavor; this deceptive philosophical move is one of the root causes of our current struggles over rationality and enlightenment.

In a hundred-year period, a handful of men and women changed the way we see the world. Many of them are well known—Marx, Freud, Proust, Einstein, Kafka. Others have vanished from collective memory despite their enduring importance in our daily lives. Without Karl Landsteiner, for instance, there would be no blood transfusions or major surgery. Without Paul Ehrlich, no chemotherapy. Without Siegfried Marcus, no motor car. Without Rosalind Franklin, genetic science would look very different. Without Fritz Haber, there would not be enough food to sustain life on earth.

What do these visionaries have in common? They all had Jewish origins. They all had a gift for thinking in wholly original, even earth-shattering ways. In 1847 the Jewish people made up less than 0.25% of the world’s population, and yet they saw what others could not. How? Why?

Norman Lebrecht has devoted half of his life to pondering and researching the mindset of the Jewish intellectuals, writers, scientists, and thinkers who turned the tides of history and shaped the world today as we know it. In Genius & Anxiety, Lebrecht begins with the Communist Manifesto in 1847 and ends in 1947, when Israel was founded. This robust, magnificent volume, beautifully designed, is an urgent and necessary celebration of Jewish genius and contribution.

Times opinion editor: Bret Stephens column was edited
    By MICHAEL CALDERONE
    01/03/2020

New York Times editorial page editor James Bennet says that a controversial column advancing a race-based theory of “Jewish genius” was fully edited and scrutinized prior to publication.

“All our columns are fact-checked and edited,” he said in a statement to POLITICO.

Bennet did not discuss specifically how references to bogus claims about Ashkenazi Jews having superior intelligence made it through the Times’s editing process, which has been called into question since the publication of Bret Stephens’s much-criticized column and the subsequent addition of an editor’s note.

    ******
In the past, Stephens has noted receiving Bennet’s guidance on his writing, telling The Washington Post in October that Bennet helped edit the infamous “bedbug” column. “After that whole thing erupted, James and I went out for a very friendly drinking session,” Stephens said of the August incident. “His line was: ‘We seem to be approaching peak Twitter insanity.’”

In a piece touting the genius of Ashkenazi Jews, the New York Times columnist cited a study co-authored by the late white supremacist anthropologist, Henry Harpending, who promoted pseudoscientific ideas about the heritability of intelligence.
