Maryland’s new Emmett Till Alert System issues its first alert at ‘severe’ level

ODENTON, Md. — Maryland’s new Emmett Till Alert System released a “severe” warning Sunday night that involves threats of possible violence against Black child care centers.
Providing more information at a news conference Monday afternoon, African American leaders sounded an alarm intended to heighten awareness and increase vigilance in Maryland and across the country.
Maryland’s Emmett Till Alert System went live in August and was activated for the first time at 6 p.m. Sunday.
“Sounding the alarm against domestic threats is very important to me,” said Antonio Palmer, owner of Kingdom Kare.
The Caucus of African American Leaders puts out the alerts, which are similar to Amber Alerts, but are focused on hate crimes and other incidents targeting minorities.
“When we receive potential threats against our community, our churches, our child care centers, we must take it seriously,” Palmer said.
This first alert was the highest possible warning that Black day care centers are being targeted for possible acts of violence by hate groups online. Leaders said the threat was identified and vetted by the system’s own panel of intelligence experts.
… A representative of Baltimore’s FBI field office told 11 News in a statement: “We are taking these threats seriously, and we have reached out to other law enforcement partners to ascertain if they have any further information or awareness.”
A representative of the Anne Arundel County Police Department told 11 News in a statement: “We have no specific threats at this time, and we’re looking into it.”
… At this point, the alerts are sent to an invitation-only network that includes members of the Maryland Legislative Black Caucus, Black clergy leaders and leaders of national civil rights organizations.

Twenty bucks says this “Alert System” gets used to publicize some vague, non-existent threat to an all-black school (e.g., Morgan State University, an HBCU “Institutional Leader”; see morgan.edu for the details), sometime late next week or the following weekend — about ten days before the midterm elections.
Of course, weeks later, it will be clear that there was no genuine threat, and that the “Alert System” still has some bugs to be worked out, i.e., it can’t distinguish between a real hate crime and a hate hoax (“How you spell that? H-O-A-K-S?”).

The image of a gleaming city snugly situated in an idyllic countryside was attained by Calgary, funded by an oil boom economy, when I visited in the 80’s. it was an astounding realization in glass towers interconnected with windowed ramps, all sealed with internal climate, so that you wouldn’t need to step into a Canadian winter, and it included naturally lighted interior gardens. I stood high in one of the towers, looking over the Alberta plain to the distant horizons. Directly down and across the street there were only three small structures, houses side by side, and on one of them, someone was mowing his lawn.
Decades later I returned eagerly on a motorcycle but it took a looong time to enter and labor through the emergent nondescript sprawl, and so I just kept going west without getting anywhere near that hub.
Similarly. my family used to drive from Michigan to the picturesque model of a city on the Thames, London, Ontario, and walk the streets quite charmed. In the same time frame, perhaps the same trip, I found that I could still do that, but only after miles of boots on the asphalt, again and again.
I might at least suggest that our Canadian cousins consider the US practice of trashing and hollowing the city centers [centres]. Look now at Detroit and see the miles of grassy plain.

I recently had breakfast with a 30 year old professional black woman and when the conversation obliquely touched on politics I was surprised when she basically came out as a leave-me-alone conservative and claimed that more of her peers than I would think feel the same way. Obviously she is still an outlier but even a 5% permanent decline in voting preference for the Democrats from blacks would present them with serious problems. Anecdotal but still a real-world experience so worth passing along.
The average black kid is in far more danger from their Mom’s violent live-in black boyfriend than they are from some vague, made-up terrorist threat intended to turn out the black vote. A daycare is a refuge from the violent black boyfriend.

Recently took a concealed carry class for Marylands newly liberalized carry law—probably 30-40 % of the class were black women–during the shooting portion at a local mega-range there were lots of black women from the various classes using that indoor range. Many had never handled a gun to any extent but they knew they would feel better carrying.

North Carolina’s Cannon Hinnant Alert System went live in August and was activated for the first time at 6 p.m. Sunday.
“Sounding the alarm against domestic threats is very important to me,” said Calvin Woodard of Wilson, North Carolina.
The Caucus of American Leaders puts out the alerts, which are similar to Amber Alerts, but are focused on crimes and other incidents targeting White children.

“The reason this one came out … ‘severe’ — the highest we can — (is) because it involves, potentially, people’s lives, and so we wanted to make sure that people take it seriously,” said L. Lamont Wiggins, with the North Carolina Superior Court. “If by putting out this alert we save one life, it’s worth it.”
“Make no mistake about this. This is based on a credible, credible threat,” said Wiggins.
A representative of Greenville’s FBI field office told The Daily Stupid in a statement: “We are taking these threats seriously, and we have reached out to other law enforcement partners to ascertain if they have any further information or awareness.”
A representative of the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office told The Daily Stupid in a statement: “We have no specific threats at this time, and we’re looking into it.”
“We cannot allow these threats to go unaddressed,” Woodard said. “I’m calling on our local, state and federal government officials and agencies to respond to and address these recent threats.”
The police department also underscored a message from leaders to Wilson County residents that police officers will visit businesses upon request and conduct a security assessment.
“We want to make sure we are proactive and not reactive, waiting for an incident to happen, to put measures in place when it comes to our children,” said Woodard. “We are not here in panic mode. We are here as a sign of strength.”

Illinois is plenty anti-gun, but Chicago can no longer stop you from buying a gun (outside the city, ditto practicing with it) or carrying it concealed. Last time I checked the relevant authorities, not the ones you name, are cool with legitimate used in self-defense.
