With little in the way of news coming out of Manchester, England recently, the Manchester [UK] Evening News reports:

Coronation Street fans feel ‘physically sick’ watching the Geoff and Yasmeen abuse storyline
Some Corrie viewers have been switching off and others have praised the harrowing storyline

By Katie Fitzpatrick
16:32, 16 JAN 2020

It’s been a tough watch and Coronation Street fans say they’ve felt ‘physically sick’ watching the Geoff Metcalfe and Yasmeen Nazir storyline.

Some viewers have reached for the off-switch and are begging for the story to come to an end while others have applauded the soap’s decision to explore the harrowing subject of coercive control. …

Coronation Street announced in June last year that it was to explore the disturbing effects of coercive control relationships and raise awareness of this form of domestic abuse through the story of Geoff’s behaviour towards his partner.

Viewers have seen Geoff, the father of cabbie Tim Metcalfe, become increasingly manipulative and controlling towards Yasmeen, persuading her to spend time alone away from friends and family including her granddaughter Alya, while appearing jovial to their friends and neighbours.

As his controlling behaviour escalated he even staged a robbery and followed Yasmeen so he could be seen to protect her, taking over her bank account and setting up CCTV equipment to watch her every move around the house.

In December the couple announced that they had married in Las Vegas and Geoff stepped up his plan to manipulate Yasmeen by drawing up an exhausting cleaning rota and buying her a state-of-the-art vacuum cleaner.

Things have now taken another dark turn with him accusing his wife of being an alcoholic and taking away her credit cards.

Since 2015 this form of abuse has been classed as a criminal offence and underpins 95 per cent of all abusive relationships.

    It is indeed touching that the Manchester newsrag has found something truly important to cover, rather than that boring old “rapey-rape-rape” non-news. Yes, touching and sincere.

    Man marries woman, expects her to handle simple, undemanding domestic duties.
    Man accuses wife of alcoholism, removes her credit cards.[1]

    This is not only classified as “abuse” but deemed a crime. A crime. He should go to jail for expecting his wife to vacuum. He should go to jail because he wishes to protect her against herself and keep her from drink. Reasonable people should bear this in mind when reading of “abuse” from feminist sources. Because it’s dishonest.

    Suggest that reasonable housekeeping expectations and prudent financial control are not “abuse”, and the feminists will screech that one is intent on beating women with iron rods while they are chained to a stove. It’s the usual bait / switch or motte / bailey game at work. It’s how feminists take advantage of men’s protective instincts in order to obtain dominion over men.

    [1] Maybe she’s not an alcoholic at all, and he’s an unreasonable control freak, who knows? But anyone who has ever tried to help an alcoholic realizes sooner or later the alcoholic cannot be allowed to have any money, at least for a time, because the temptation to run out for “just one” drink or “just one” bottle of vodka is overwhelming. Plus credit cards enable alcoholics to order bottles of booze to be delivered to them.

    In her home country sweet Yasmeen would be getting her head shoved through a window, thrown down some stairs, or learning to fly from the rooftops.

    People should be celebrating how much better off she is with a caring British man like Geoff.

    That was Pullman’s schtick twenty years ago. Surely there aren’t enough people still attending the C of E for that to even be a viable… er, forget it, viability is more bug than feature in such matters. The more ridiculous the better.

    Then again for this nonsense to make it all the way to Coronation Street may just be the inevitable working its way through the population distribution, like woke Evangelicals, and a sign that the avant garde has long been onto other matters.

  13. J.Ross says:

    In this same vein Netflix is coming out with a literal modern Yezhovshchina fantasy in which woke antifa types control reality, catalog political dissidents, “tag” them in the past with time travel, and then in the present effortlessly push a button to activate the tag so the evil racist’s brain drips bloodily out every facial orifice. The wrecker cannot counter the revolution when you kill him.

    (The first appearance of David’s twelve-fold murder fantasy would work much better here but I couldn’t find it. For context, David is indulging in elaborate power fantasies and fixating on repeated murder because he is insane.)
    This is hardly new but it’s a useful thing to remember the next time somebody says we have free speech or entertainment or meaningful atrocity remembrance in this country. These people babble about the political power of hair and we are called fragile for objecting to literal mass murder fantasies. The main argument for censorship is that dehumanization can lead to real violence, but this never applies to leftists, who are reliably violent in real life. Youtubers talking about historically established and perfectly legal hobbies are shut down without explanation but nobody will call for the writers of Shadow of the Moon to be psychologically examined or imply that their efforts constitute dehumanization.

  15. Interesting statistics from England&Wales.

    https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/774866/youth_justice_statistics_bulletin_2017_2018.pdf

    Fewer English&Welsh youths (those aged 10-17) were cautioned or sentenced. See below excerpt.

    26,700 children and young people were cautioned or sentenced.

    The number of children and young people who received a caution or sentence has fallen by 82% over the last ten years, with a 6% fall in the last year

    Fewer first-time entrants to the Youth Justice System. Back 10 years ago, there were 7 times as many first-time entrants.

    That’s a huge change. It’d be like if American Blacks became so much more law-abiding that their incarceration rate became the same as American Whites. Wouldn’t that be interesting?

    14,400 first time entrants to the YJS.

    The number of first time entrants has fallen by 86% since the year ending March 2008, with a 14% fall since the year ending March 2017.

    More knife attacks.

    4,500 knife and offensive weapon offences were committed by children.

    There have been year-on-year increases in these offences since the year ending March 2014, with a 7% increase in the latest year.

    Increase in sentencing length for offences.

    The average custodial sentence length for indictable offences has increased.

    The average custodial sentence length for indictable offences given to children has increased by five months over the last ten years, from 11.4 to 16.7 months.

    The White arrest rate is falling more quickly.

    Compared to ten years ago, the numbers of arrests of children of each ethnicity have all decreased significantly, but at different rates. For example, arrests of White children have fallen by 82% compared with 56% for Black children. This has led to a change in the proportions of arrests by ethnicity.

    In the latest year, 69% of arrests were of White children. This proportion is a decrease from 83% ten years previously. Arrests of Black children accounted for 16% in the latest year, double the proportion of ten years ago. Arrests of Asian and Mixed children made up 6% and 7% of the total respectively in the latest year and have also seen changes in proportions over the last ten years, albeit on a smaller scale.

    Looking at the rate of arrests for other ethnicities compared to the rate for White children, the RRI for Black children shows that they are over four times as likely as White children to be arrested, and increased from 3.8 to 4.2 in the last year. Children from Mixed and Chinese or Other ethnicities were around twice as likely to be arrested than White children, while Asian children had a similar chance to their White counterparts of being arrested. The RRI for each of these ethnicities increased over the last year.

    Here are the youth arrest rates by ethnicity, with the White rate indexed at 1.0.

    Arrest Rates

    White = 1.0
    Asian = 0.8
    Black = 4.2
    Mixed = 2.0
    Chinese&Other = 1.9

    By the way, the “Chinese & Other” group includes a lot of different ethnic groups. It makes even less sense than Asian-American&Pacific Islander. I’ve seen other statistics that show Chinese youths offend less often (per capita) than other ethnic groups in England.

    In England, “Asian” primarily means South Asian (Indian, Paki, Bangla, Tamil, Nepali).

    Coronation Street fans feel ‘physically sick’ watching the Geoff and Yasmeen abuse storyline

    By Katie Fitzpatrick

    Biographical info I can piece together suggests of Katie Fitzpatrick a typical life-well-lived for someone of her age and background — she found success doing what she loves, which is following show-biz. As far as a Muslim angle, her life trajectory suggests probably very little exposure to them except the occasional ‘token Muslim.’

    The author is not the salient part of the story here, but in any case, here is a mini-portrait of a British show-biz journalist of mid-tier importance (Manchester Evening News reportedly gets hundreds of thousands of unique visitors a day). It is people like this who are among our first lines of contact with (defense against?) media narratives; they have more power than they’re given credit for.

    ______________

    Katie Fitzpatrick

    – born May 1978; raised in Manchester;
    early 1990s: Becomes one of Manchester’s top ‘Take That ‘ fans (a British band formed in 1989 and consciously modeled on New Kids on the Block) (see her April 2015 retrospective tribute to Take That);
    ca. 1995: graduates from Fairfield High School for Girls in Droylsden, Manchester; gets start in journalism shortly thereafter; not a university graduate(?);
    – By the 2000s has an active journalism career; “Katie’s varied career has included covering the Harold Shipman case [late 1990s], visiting Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee garden party and appearing in panto. She works for the Rochdale Observer, Middleton Guardian and Heywood Advertiser;”
    2011: First published as a guest columnist in Manchester Evening Newssee what she looked like at that time (holding four Take That albums she’d kept as prized possessions since the early ’90s) — it was a celebratory column on how the band Take That was getting back together and about to go on tour again;
    – ca. summer 2013: Becomes regular columnist at Manchester Evening News [M.E.N.];
    – ca. 2015: promoted to “the M.E.N. celebrity blogger. She covers showbiz, fashion and music events and specialises in bringing you the latest soap news. In addition, Katie is in the thick of it when it comes to Manchester’s social scene.”

    Married to Michael Fitzpatrick (also of Manchester, also born ca.1978; BA, Journalism, Barnsley College, 2000), news and sport page editor at the Manchester Evening News, active with the newspaper from 2003. It appears they have no children. Here they are going strong in 2018.

    Who, I wondered, was lobbying for the American workers competing with the new arrivals? The answer, I learned, was no one. As the former labor secretary Robert Reich once put it, “There’s no National Association of Working Poor.”

    The same former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich who has never said a single word about the harm immigration does to American workers.

    The amnesty was delivered. Work-site enforcement was not. Illegal immigration exploded. From 1990 to 2007, the unauthorized population grew at an annual average of 500,000. It reached a peak of 12.2 million in 2007, before falling to its present level of about 11 million.

    The present level of illegal immigrants in this country is not 11 million. According to a Yale study, it’s at least 22 million and some experts suggest much higher numbers.

Under the sudden spotlight, she came across narcissistic, arrogant, hypocritical, money grabbing and attention seeking, the opposite of everything the royal family is supposed to represent, i.e. the best of the British upper class: stoic, slightly aloof yet caring about the people, quietly serve the nation yet never discuss politics, accept (both good and bad) attention as part of the job but never seek it, and never, ever, talk about money much less crassly monetize their exalted position.

    Wouldn’t surprise me if there is a Jewish agent/manager behind the scenes pulling all the strings, teaching her how to blame, play victim, seek attention and monetize, for this crass yet crafty behavior is Jewish in every way. Every black entertainer/athlete has a Jewish agent.

    Michael Medved has a good BookTV appearance describing the pattern, which he observed closely in movies. The Simpsons actually had two different episodes spaced well apart, roughly using the same template but with a destructive ramp-up on the later one. In the earlier one Homer benefits from a brief acquaintance with a “helper” type who is clearly but never expicitly gay. In the later one Homer is reworked into an ignorant, unlikeable homophobe so that Jon Waters, far more clumsy than the earlier helper, can cure him. The hasbarah episode with Sascha Baron-Cohen was vaguely similar.

    Manchester was an industrial town of considerable renown in the old days. When I visited there in the 1980s I got to go through part of the old Gardner diesel engine plant, a remarkable structure in which were built some remarkable engines.

    They also built many of their own machine tools, including a crankshaft lathe that is still prized today in certain facilities.

    The end of manufacturing in Britain was a sad harbinger for us for as they go, we tend to as well.

    Are You Being Served? English television comedy series 1972-1985. Silly and jejune yet should make anyone laugh. There is a heaumeausexual character;

    Stuff like that on TV was the beginning of normalization, which led in time to Will & Grace which further normalized it, eventually in time leading to gay marriage. Slippery slopes are not always slippery at first. At first.

    I can’t disagree. But golly, that show is so stupid-funny. I guess that is how the populace gets roped in. Bit by tiny bit. After the series was done, they came up with another one involving all the same actors in 1992-93. I did not and will not watch it (I have a 1-month subscription to BritBox.)

    Children and young people are killing each other almost daily on the streets of London. His response was to become the Invisible Man, then emerge to spout pious platitudes. An abject loser.
