Some viewers have reached for the off-switch and are begging for the story to come to an end while others have applauded the soap’s decision to explore the harrowing subject of coercive control. …
Coronation Street announced in June last year that it was to explore the disturbing effects of coercive control relationships and raise awareness of this form of domestic abuse through the story of Geoff’s behaviour towards his partner.
Viewers have seen Geoff, the father of cabbie Tim Metcalfe, become increasingly manipulative and controlling towards Yasmeen, persuading her to spend time alone away from friends and family including her granddaughter Alya, while appearing jovial to their friends and neighbours.
As his controlling behaviour escalated he even staged a robbery and followed Yasmeen so he could be seen to protect her, taking over her bank account and setting up CCTV equipment to watch her every move around the house.
In December the couple announced that they had married in Las Vegas and Geoff stepped up his plan to manipulate Yasmeen by drawing up an exhausting cleaning rota and buying her a state-of-the-art vacuum cleaner.
Things have now taken another dark turn with him accusing his wife of being an alcoholic and taking away her credit cards.
Since 2015 this form of abuse has been classed as a criminal offence and underpins 95 per cent of all abusive relationships.

This is not only classified as “abuse” but deemed a crime. A crime. He should go to jail for expecting his wife to vacuum. He should go to jail because he wishes to protect her against herself and keep her from drink. Reasonable people should bear this in mind when reading of “abuse” from feminist sources. Because it’s dishonest.
Suggest that reasonable housekeeping expectations and prudent financial control are not “abuse”, and the feminists will screech that one is intent on beating women with iron rods while they are chained to a stove. It’s the usual bait / switch or motte / bailey game at work. It’s how feminists take advantage of men’s protective instincts in order to obtain dominion over men.

But anyone who has ever tried to help an alcoholic realizes sooner or later the alcoholic cannot be allowed to have any money, at least for a time, because the temptation to run out for “just one” drink or “just one” bottle of vodka is overwhelming. I used to watch this show w/my English Mum on CBC back in the 80's and I remember even then how they would take once affable characters like this Geoff guy (I'm guessin') and turn them into psychopaths on the turn of a dime. I used to watch East Enders too but after awhile just couldn't take the ham-fisted melodrama of either show. I find it hard to watch any kind of drama these days. And — I don’t know and haven’t checked but — I’m guessing that was a very different sort of character to what would now be normal, probably in line with the 1970s nonthreatening/camp party line or the 1990s mere visibility tone.
The show is averaging 760k viewers a week, only 250k among the cherished 18-49 demo, which is pitiful for an alleged 'prestige' series.
The much less expensive to produce and actually funny Curb Your Enthusiasm averages 1.01 million viewers a week, and 350k among the 18-49 demo.Replies: @Liza

Michael Medved has a good BookTV appearance describing the pattern, which he observed closely in movies. The Simpsons actually had two different episodes spaced well apart, roughly using the same template but with a destructive ramp-up on the later one. In the earlier one Homer benefits from a brief acquaintance with a “helper” type who is clearly but never expicitly gay. In the later one Homer is reworked into an ignorant, unlikeable homophobe so that Jon Waters, far more clumsy than the earlier helper, can cure him. The hasbarah episode with Sascha Baron-Cohen was vaguely similar.
Manchester was an industrial town of considerable renown in the old days. When I visited there in the 1980s I got to go through part of the old Gardner diesel engine plant, a remarkable structure in which were built some remarkable engines.
They also built many of their own machine tools, including a crankshaft lathe that is still prized today in certain facilities.

I can’t disagree. But golly, that show is so stupid-funny. I guess that is how the populace gets roped in. Bit by tiny bit. After the series was done, they came up with another one involving all the same actors in 1992-93. I did not and will not watch it (I have a 1-month subscription to BritBox.)
