Back in the early 1990s, Susan Faludi was, along with Naomi Wolf, a feminist poster girl for the post-Clarence Thomas Year of the Woman in politics that, in order to fight the plague of sexual harassment in the workplace, elected as President … Bill Clinton.
Faludi’s 1991 book Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women was a huge bestseller as part of the frontlash that put Bill in the White House. Granted, it was kind of lame and lowbrow, although not as dopey as Naomi Wolf’s book The Beauty Myth, but that’s what elite opinion wanted at the time.
Since then Faludi’s career has been rather low profile with only three more books, in part, I like to imagine because she’s actually, like Susan Brownmiller, kind of a good person and has had qualms and second thoughts about simply churning out Feminist Red Meat. Her 1999 book Stiffed: The Betrayal of the American Man, for example, was more sympathetic to Average Joes than had been expected.
Now she has a memoir, In the Darkroom, about her father that sounds like a useful addition to the literature of transsexualism. We have quite a few (not necessarily plausible) memoirs by various writers who decided in later life to announce that, even while fathering all those children, they were always women on the inside. (This has hardened into an ideological orthodoxy that you publicly question at some peril to your career.)
But now we have one from a writer whose father has made such a claim.
From the Belfast Press:
By Eilis O’Hanlon
Big change: Susan Faludi has written about her father going through reassignment surgery
In early 2004, Susan Faludi, author of the feminist manifesto Backlash, received an email from her father, Steven, revealing that “he” was now a “she”, having undergone gender reassignment surgery in Thailand. The news didn’t come as a total surprise. Faludi had heard rumours that the father to whom she’d barely spoken in 25 years had been exploring this option, but it was definitely a shock in one other sense.
“I’d always known my father to assert the male prerogative. He had seemed invested – insistently, inflexibly, and, in the last year of our family life, bloodily – in being the household despot. For as far back as I could remember, he had presided as imperious patriarch, overbearing and autocratic, even as he remained a cipher, cryptic to everyone around him.”
I’ve known one high achieving man who later announced he was transgender, and when I knew him he was widely considered the biggest prick around. Perhaps it’s a pattern among autogynephilic late-in-life transsexuals?
Now, suddenly, here he was announcing his pristine identity as a woman called Stefanie, declaring: “I have had enough of impersonating a macho aggressive man that I have never been inside.”
Soon Faludi is headed to Budapest, where her Hungarian-born father had decamped after his erratic, violent behaviour led to divorce from Faludi’s mother, to investigate this cipher further, intending, she admits, to draw up a charge sheet against him. “I wasn’t sure I was ready to release him to a new identity; she hadn’t explained the old one.”
This mindful switch between pronouns becomes a feature of the book. Faludi carefully uses “she” and “her”, even while wracked with doubt about her father’s new persona, not least when, in the middle of a disagreement, that old prerogative reasserts itself: “I am still your father”.
This father figure, what’s more, was always an adept liar and fraudster whose lifelong credo has been “getting away with it”.
A professional photographer by trade, her father was skilled at manipulating images, and Stefanie makes herself no easier to know than Steven, declaring herself to be uninterested in the past, only the future.
Is this, the author wonders, just her father’s latest guise behind which to hide the true self? If so, it’s not one she finds particularly edifying.
Faludi wants to understand her father, but finds that “every road into the interior was blocked by a cardboard cut-out of florid femininity”. The author takes refuge in the literature, and talks to doctors, psychologists, and other trans people, but much of what she learns heightens her disquiet. Far from enabling her to understand her father, her investigations “were having the opposite effect”.
What’s more, a disturbing edge of sexual fetishism always seemed to be lurking just below the surface. She notes that it’s one of the basic tenets of transgenderism that identity and sexuality are different things, but Faludi finds them constantly conflated.
“The transformation from one gender to another was eroticised at every step.”
Here’s a fine 2007 New York Times article about the war that various super-high IQ late-in-life transgender types like Donald/Deirdre McCloskey along the with SPLC, always sniffing out new sources of revenue, conducted against scientists who were disclosing to the public the role a particular sexual fetish plays in the highest profile type of transgenderism.
The screensaver on her father’s computer is of Stefanie dressed as a French maid, with blonde curls like Susan’s as a child, reaching down to adjust a stocking, while the ‘How To’ manuals advise those who think of themselves as women to “practise submission with sex toys in front of a mirror”.
… As Faludi says, the trend since Freud has been to accept that the real psychological origins for a person’s behaviour are complex, often hidden deeply from plain sight, but a fear of giving offence to those who identify as transgender has meant that there is no equivalent examination of the range of reasons why a human being might feel they are in the “wrong” body.
Accepting their own self-diagnosis without question might avoid confrontation with those for whom transgenderism is a matter of faith, but it does so at the expense of intellectual honesty. What if they’re actually “seeking womanhood to reclaim [their] innocence, be exonerated from the sins of a male past”, or “craving the moral stature that comes from being oppressed”? Or simply wanting to be a woman to “feel special, celebrated, loved”?
The book culminates in a shocking scene, when her father finally talks about the time when, outraged by her desire to attend a Christian summer camp with a friend, he burst into the teenage Faludi’s bedroom and repeatedly bashed her head against the floor, shouting: “I created you. And I can destroy you.”
I always assumed over the last quarter of a century that Faludi was of Italian Catholic ancestry. You learn something new every day.
She asks if he remembers what he said.
“I remember exactly what I said,” her father replies. “That they exterminated the Jews, and how could you do this?” Faludi concludes: “I didn’t correct her. Whatever the actual words, I understood this is what they meant to her.” She reaches over, squeezes her father’s hand, and says: “It’s okay.”
The scene is presented as a touching moment of bonding and forgiveness, but it’s genuinely horrifying.
I haven’t read the book, but it sounds like another example of a widespread pattern in postwar feminism: bright Jewish daughter grows up angry (sometimes with good reason, as in Susan Faludi’s case) at at least one member of her Jewish family. But she learns that she’ll be rewarded if she generalizes and intellectualizes her resentment toward a Jewish relative into blaming her animus on Society or Men or Stereotypes or anti-Semites or whatever it is that gentiles can be badgered into feeling guilty about.
White guilt is the worry that your ancestors were too ethnocentric; Jewish guilt, as I learned from reading Philip Roth, is the worry that you aren’t ethnocentric enough for your ancestors.
Jewish guilt turns out to be more personally useful.

Given the middle age onset of TG, I suppose it must be related to a lessening of the libido, which in turn seeks an outlet by auto-eroticism. That’s the only explanation for autogynephilia that makes sense to me. For those of us who are irredeemably straight, it helps to have a spouse who still enjoys you, exercise, and, of course, the pills I have heard about.
I don’t really want to comment on the rest. I don’t believe in writing about your family in such detail, particularly in a case like this. I suppose it’s self-therapy but there’s an element of shamelessness in it that reminds me of celebrity autobiographies.

Standard issue autogynephilia. It’s what happens when transvestism no longer does the trick.
Philip Roth is a good example. Just chart the progress from “Defender of the Faith” (which got him trouble with the Jewish community) to The Plot Against America. In the former, he’s mildly critical of Jewish ethnocentrism. In the latter, he’s fantasizing about about Christian America slaughtering Jews….

Yeah, my guess would be something like ‘a high level of testosterone means a high level of aromatase [which turns testosterone into estrogen] gets produced, but then testosterone falls in old age without the aromatase being successfully downregulated, resulting in lots of free estrogen floating around, leading the guy to think he’s a gal’. Crap like that happens all the time in disease states–cancer’s in large part a matter of too many growth-promoting genes getting turned on and too many growth-suppressing genes getting turned off.
You could probably do the study pretty easily, but you’d never get funding.

It really seems that in recent years a remarkable fraction of our most influential public intellectuals have come from families with seemingly hereditary mental illness…
Maybe that explains some of the odder aspects of our current society…
Americans don't like leaders who are mentally ill. We're just too caught up in epicurean pursuits to take real any real corrective action. So we allow the crazies to bubble up through the cracks and go right to the top.

There’s a lot to this, but I wonder if it was also at least in part an unfortunate side effect of having a larger than average crop of 120+ IQ women who weren’t going to find mothering intellectually stimulating enough *plus* a tendency toward intellectual leftism since the right was historically the more anti-Semitic side *plus* a lack of value on traditional masculinity since Jewish men didn’t engage in physical occupations historically.
I mean, feminists really do believe their own BS–they engage in behaviors repulsive to men and encourage each other not to reproduce, which doesn’t sound to me like a very evolutionarily successful strategy. It’s got to be a side product of something else. (And I doubt Kevin MacDonald’s ideas apply here, since there’s no evidence Jewish feminists spawn any more than gentile ones. Mercifully.)

I don’t think testosterone works that way unless it is administered artificially, causing the glands that produce it naturally to atrophy. Otherwise it is a slow and steady decline if undisturbed by an increase in lean muscle mass and/or support from one’s diet.

It’s not disturbing to functioning in society the way being attracted to children or lighting fires is–you convert and that’s it. Sadomasochism isn’t even considered necessarily disordered anymore, now that 50 Shades of Grey has sold millions of copies.
Gender reassignment would change history beyond recognition–think of all the young men who would change sex to avoid fighting in wars. (They wouldn’t cut their dicks off to save their lives? Guys get penectomies for penile cancer, don’t they?)

Steve Sailer here:
It's interesting to speculate on the future of intermarriage in America. Marriages are increasingly likely to be between people of different ethnic groups but of similar IQ's, and there's no reason to assume this trend will stop. America's obsession with sending everybody to college means that young people get sorted by SAT score (i.e., IQ) when they're at their most romantic. Therefore, it's quite possible that the top dogs in America will in future generations look different than they do now, but they probably won't look much like the future underdogs, either. If we were to halt immigration now, continuing intermarriage along IQ lines might in many generations lead to the country being run by an IQ overclass of mostly "Jeurasians" (i.e., a genetic blend of the smarter European gentiles, Jews, East Asians, South Asians, Armenians, and possibly other Middle Easterners). In contrast, the lower ranks might consist largely of "Redblex": a rather lumpy partial blend of redneck whites, blacks, and Mexicans.
Of course, continued immigration slows genetic and cultural assimilation. For example, right now Japanese-Americans are fading into Eurasians because of the decline in immigration from Japan (since there are no terribly poor people left in Japan) and their very high rate of intermarriage with whites (especially for Japanese-American women). Chinese-Americans, in contrast, can be expected to remain a distinct ethnic group for several generations more (despite a high rate of intermarriage), since there is no imminent shortage of poor Chinese desperate to come to America.
The Jews are another interesting case to speculate about. The next generation of the "IQ elite" (e.g., Ivy Leaguers or lawyers or media figures or frequent flyers or whatever category you think representative) may well have a lower percentage of pure Jews ... but a higher percentage of part-Jews, as intermarriage between Jews and smart gentiles continues.
Would this mean the non-violent extinction of Jews (except for the Orthodox)? Possibly, but it might also imply that America's overclass would become even more dominated by Jewish attitudes, e.g., Hitler-obsession (which has played such a major role in influencing the views on the Balkans of our Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, National Security Adviser, and their colleagues). In the future most highly articulate white Americans will be related to Jews by genes or marriage, which no doubt will impact what views are popular in society (even more than today, when a Marlon Brando is automatically excoriated for saying that Jews have lots of power in Hollywood!)
For an extreme example of how pro-Semitism can come about within an individual merely through genes alone, consider me. Although I'm Catholic, I became very pro-Semitic at the age of 13 when my powers of logic kicked in (and my hair turned curly). I quickly noticed that a high percentage of the thinkers I either agreed with (e.g., Milton Friedman) or whom I considered it a worthy challenge to argue against were Jewish. Since I was adopted, a few years later I concluded that it was likely that I was half-Jewish biologically, (which indeed appears to be the case based on evidence my wife dug up when I was 30). It's important to understand the chain of causation: having a very Jewish-style brain (e.g., enjoying logical argument), I sought out the best logical arguers to read, very many of whom were Jewish. (You may object that my political views today don't sound much like those of the majority of American Jews, but I was enormously influenced by Jewish neoconservatives in the 1970s and 1980s. Having gone to some lengths to expose myself to Jewish thinkers (not because they were Jewish per se, but because those who most stimulated my kind of mind more than writers from other ethnic groups), I absorbed from them a lot of typically Jewish political stances: e.g., pro-Israel and pro-immigration.
Now, my pro-Semitism came about even though I was being raised in my (adoptive) family, which has no Jewish relatives, and, in fact, has a slight anti-Semitic mindset. (I realize my case is only a single data point, so I recommend somebody conduct a formal adoption study of Jews and part-Jews adopted by gentile families.) In the future, however, most children of the IQ elite will have Jews in their extended relatives, which will make my kind of pro-Semitism even more widespread in the future.

I was thinking more along the lines of conversion to Judaism not being sexually arousing. Autogynephiles pursue gender re-assignment because it turns them on. Although I haven’t deeply researched the matter, that doesn’t seem to be the case with converting to a new religion….

One of the side effects of steroid use is increase in natural estrogen levels produced by the body. There is a homeostatic mechanism in the body whereby higher testosterone is accompanied by higher estrogen. Higher testosterone men may have higher estrogen levels than lower testosterone men. That may be involved here with these high testosterone men who go transgender as they get older. Their testosterone levels may drop off while their estrogen levels don’t decline as much or remain elevated.
Because you don’t do it for the erotic thrill, you do it for the jokes. Don’t you remember the Seinfeld episode?
Shag carpeting?
As some have noted above, the pattern to notice with these particular autogynephiles is that they all start out as high-testosterone manly men, and then have a sexual identity breakdown in middle age just as their testosterone levels are likely dropping precipitously. My guess is that the sexual brain architecture and ‘homeostatic baseline’ that was mostly formed by the end of puberty and early adulthood was ‘calibrated’ to an exceptionally high level of male sex hormone. So that, by middle age, what is a moderate decline in masculine virility for a normal man is like a total crash for them that hits them like a ton of bricks, and which swings their attractions and self identity all the way past zero and into the modes of the opposite gender.
The brain is very adept at self-deception and conveniently rewriting memories and retconning the most socially beneficial narrative. So these guys may not exacting be lying about the “always was a girl on the inside”, but that also doesn’t mean we have to take their word for it or trust their testimony as the unvarnished truth.
Carpeting could increase blunt force trauma, no? Similar to how punches to the head with boxing gloves are more concussive than bare knuckles.
Unless there's some really weird physics going on with more energy being transmitted through longer contact or something like that. But that's certainly not the mainstram explanation for why gloves cause more head trauma and seems prima facie absurd.Replies: @PV van der Byl

Autogynephiles are sexually attracted to women. Indeed, once they transition, they rationalize their feelings for women by saying that they are Lesbians.
Testosterone is actually a synthetic intermediate in the body’s production of estrogen. The body makes estrogen *from* testosterone. Kind of weird if you think about it.

As Sailer has pointed out, if you don’t necessarily believe officially compiled statistics, you can study groups that “cannot be lied about”. (First 100 Microsoft or Apple employees, 1960s MLB players are near-perfect examples for lots of purposes – and, for limited-purpose studies, two good examples are homicide victims/arrested murder suspects in a given geographic area as a proxy for several measurements of disparate populations, and one’s own high school classmates as a good proxy for local morbidity statistics.) With respect to transexuality, it seems there is not a single MLB vet who is transexual. There is one former Navy Seal. Zero NFL vets, zero former Congressmen. One Olympic Gold Medalist (and not a skater or a gymnast either). Thus, high testosterone in early adulthood (MLB, Seals, NFL, political ambition) seems more like a counter-indication for later married-man father-of-children transexual behavior, than a positive correlation. A more important issue – and I am serious – is the uncourageous Congressional voting behavior of middle-aged and elderly men who take too many female hormones to prevent balding and to prevent having to get up more than once in the night to urinate.

You're going to laugh, but I was peeved as a youngster by the lack of mention (name-dropping) of my country in the popular media I was viewing. Hungary, Serbia etc have a lot higher profiles in the Western mind, possibly because they historically sent out more immigrants than Romania (which only in the post-communist era came into its own as a phenomenon). To the lower classes before globalization, especially peasants, immigrating shamed your family by breaking the bond with the land, diminishing the extended family's capacity for solidarity etc. There are even jokes about this, with a peasant wanting to go to America in the 1930, and going to the train station to get a ticket bound for a port city on the European Atlantic coast. The teller asks him where he's going so he can give him the ticket, and the peasant shouts "what the f*** is it to you?".
So, it's the late 90s and I'm watching the terrific spy show La femme Nikita. Suddenly, Michael says something about an operative being attacked by "Romanian guerillas operating near Bucharest". My 13 year old self was elated. Later, the Hitman gaming franchise placed the insane asylum where the doctor performed the genetic experiments and cruel/brutal conditioning that created Agent 47 and his clone brothers in Romania (also a level in one of the games). Cue high fives from all of my gamer friends. If Call of Duty ever lets you shoot Romanian terrorists, we will have made it in the public consciousness.
On a related note, are ethnic markers becoming appropriate replacements for Whites in the victim totem pole in order for goodwhites who can pull it off to differentiate themselves from badwhites? "No, man, he ain't White-White, he Hungarian. Those immigrants have it hard man. They just like us". Or so budding SJWs would like to think.Replies: @Steve Sailer, @SFG, @Kylie, @Brutusale, @Bill Jones

It’s about Hemingway’s cross-dressing son, Gregory, as told by his own long-suffering son, John Hemingway. Fascinating stuff.
These men were probably transvestites , but as they got older their fetish was their only means of getting sexually excited as their hormones decreased. Thus they take it to the next level by transitioning so they can enjoy their fetish full time.
Bruce Jenner has admitted to being a transvestite for years, and even today he remains a transvestite with a boob job. I think people with very high IQs (say, above 140) are much more likely to be non-neurotypical. That’s fine in STEM, but when it comes to the social sciences, we’d probably be better off if our public intellectuals were a bit more normal – even if they were just a bit less clever.
“Strange Tribe is a fascinating memoir revealing the peculiar family dynamics between Ernest Hemingway and his youngest son Gregory. Gregory, the author’s father, tried to live up to Ernest’s “macho” reputation throughout his life. But as a cross-dresser and (eventually) a transsexual, Gregory was obsessed with androgyny and his “female half,” and he struggled with personal demons up until his death in the Women’s Correctional Facility of the Miami Dade County Jail in 2001. In this wonderfully crafted narrative, John reveals how Ernest and Gregory (who both suffered from bipolar illness and were both fascinated by androgyny) were “two sides of the same coin.” Featuring several unpublished correspondences between Ernest and Gregory, Strange Tribe is the story of these two men and the surprising similarities between the two.
This is also John’s story–about what it was like growing up in Miami and Montana with his father and his schizophrenic mother, and of how it took him years to deal with the pain their illnesses caused him. He also shows how the persona of Ernest Hemingway, the most important literary icon of the past 100 years, continues to loom darkly over the often-troubled lives of his descendants.”
– from the Amazon description
Autogynephiles start out as transvestites, and may resort to becoming transexuals when they can no longer get an erection. Since their genitals no longer function properly they mutilate their bodies so they can enjoy their fetish full time.
Please, if you are going to say things about them, learn about them?

Susan Faludi is quite obviously a man.
Leftists in general, and feminists in particular, have pushed the idea that normal family life is actually a fount of sickness and cruelty, and the source of many of society’s evils. It is a view that is actually a complete inversion of reality. And it seems to stem from the personal dissastisfaction of those people with their own upbringings. The personal is political: that is to say, some people’s particular personal hang-ups become politics for the rest of us.
A sensible response to these people would be to say: Gosh, I’m sorry your childhood sucked, but mine was just peachy, so don’t ask me to turn society upside down and shake it out like a waste basket just to exorcise your personal demons.

Sailer on the Future of Intermarriage
12:02 PM Fri 4 Jun 99
Steve Sailer here:
It’s interesting to speculate on the future of intermarriage in America. Marriages are increasingly likely to be between people of different ethnic groups but of similar IQ’s, and there’s no reason to assume this trend will stop. America’s obsession with sending everybody to college means that young people get sorted by SAT score (i.e., IQ) when they’re at their most romantic. Therefore, it’s quite possible that the top dogs in America will in future generations look different than they do now, but they probably won’t look much like the future underdogs, either. If we were to halt immigration now, continuing intermarriage along IQ lines might in many generations lead to the country being run by an IQ overclass of mostly “Jeurasians” (i.e., a genetic blend of the smarter European gentiles, Jews, East Asians, South Asians, Armenians, and possibly other Middle Easterners). In contrast, the lower ranks might consist largely of “Redblex”: a rather lumpy partial blend of redneck whites, blacks, and Mexicans.
The next generation of the “IQ elite” (e.g., Ivy Leaguers or lawyers or media figures or frequent flyers or whatever category you think representative) may well have a lower percentage of pure Jews … but a higher percentage of part-Jews, as intermarriage between Jews and smart gentiles continues.
Would this mean the non-violent extinction of Jews (except for the Orthodox)? Possibly, but it might also imply that America’s overclass would become even more dominated by Jewish attitudes, e.g., Hitler-obsession (which has played such a major role in influencing the views on the Balkans of our Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, National Security Adviser, and their colleagues).
Although I’m Catholic, I became very pro-Semitic at the age of 13 when my powers of logic kicked in (and my hair turned curly). It’s important to understand the chain of causation: having a very Jewish-style brain (e.g., enjoying logical argument), I sought out the best logical arguers to read, very many of whom were Jewish. (You may object that my political views today don’t sound much like those of the majority of American Jews, but I was enormously influenced by Jewish neoconservatives in the 1970s and 1980s.
Steve Sailer
which seems questionable. Except that apparently Razib re-posted it here - http://www.gnxp.com/MT2/archives/000770.html
As a proud (((Eskimo))) and avid reader of Sailer, it would be great to claim him as a landsman , but I'm skeptical. Since when is Steve a huge fan of Milton Friedman or of neo-cons? Views change over time, but the quote never addresses that. Seems fishy to me.Replies: @Stan Adams
My bet however is the half-Jewish info is probably wrong. I'd guess the percentage of babies up for adoption who are Jewish is under 0.5%. They are less likely to get knocked up young, more likely to get an abortion the rare events that do happen, and likely to have "waited too long" Jewish relatives or spinster aunts who would raise an unwanted baby.I went to an evangelical christian summer bible day camp one month per summer for a few years.
My best friend's mother talked my mother into making me attend. It was actually plenty of fun but I nonetheless objected on the grounds that I had to get up every morning in the summer at 7am.
The best part was probably sneaking off and kissing girls (closed mouth only, we were 9, 10, 11, and 12) and the muddy tug-of-war.
The least fun part was that we were given little fortune-cookie style slips of paper with a single bible verse every day and told to recite it the next morning.Replies: @SFG, @Anonymous
Buddhists say that identity is an error.
The scientific textbook tells at least that identity is a social construct, i.e. it partly depends on how others identify you.
Accusation is the most energetic way others identify you – and the most important reason why social identities are kept at all over periods of time. If you want to accuse Mr. X for what he did fourty years ago to you – and whoever doesn’t want that -, you have to imply that the Mr.X of now is the same person he was fourty years ago.

Boxing gloves causes more head trauma because they allow boxers to aim hard punches at the head without risking breaking bones in their hands (which does happen even with gloves), not because the gloves cause more concussion by themselves.
Unless there’s some really weird physics going on with more energy being transmitted through longer contact or something like that. But that’s certainly not the mainstram explanation for why gloves cause more head trauma and seems prima facie absurd.
I don't have the data to make the case but my strong suspicion is that MMA fighters suffer less brain trauma in the octagon than boxers do in the ring.

That’s brilliant; 1999? (I’m surprised Sailer is as much as 50% jewish.) I mentioned this process a while ago because it seems strange that neither HBD nor KM have really looked at the incredible mating strategy that accompanies Jewish cultural and political prominence. Genes are imported into the tribe (often deliberately from high class/IQ sector – great genetic strategy) and importantly a lot of genes are exported outwards creating a more pro-Jewish social environment. [I had thought only in the sense of loyalty, as in support for immigration from those with a jewish grandparent etc. but what steve is talking about, genes directing cultural behaviours, is fascinating. ]
As near as I can tell, her reasoning seems to be quite sound. I'm half-Ashkenazi , half English-Scottish, and my sense of personal identity is entirely Anglo.Replies: @Lot

The HBI mailing list began on or around Thursday, March 4, 1999. (That is when the earliest members all joined, according to a roster Steve posted on his old AOL site.)
I. P. joined the list on Sunday, March 14, 1999.
Steve posted his piece about his pro-Semitic views to his mailing list(?) on Friday, June 4, 1999.
I.P. posted his Steve-bashing comments to the evolutionary-psychology listserv on Tuesday, February 1, 2000.
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/evolutionary-psychology/conversations/topics/2725In 2003, I.P. wrote in an e-mail:
Although the autogynephilia argument is probably dismissed too lightly, the gender identity explaination for gender dysmorphia in relatively masculine men also isn’t explained very well either. The argument is that male to female crossdressers and transsexuals have a subconscious female sex identity which is caused by a shortage of testosterone at some stage in the womb. However, in terms of gender expression they have normal, masculine male brains which don’t look like those of women or feminine homosexuals (who receive too much estrogen in the womb). Hence they exhibit normal male gender expression as boys, but then start to feel like female porn stars as soon as they hit puberty and experience a surge in testosterone. The resurgence of these feelings in middle age has yet to be explained but probably has something to do with the neurotransmitter dopamine, which tends to fall quicker than testosterone (we experience a number dopamine crashes over the lifetime starting in late childhood, when we suddenly stop getting excited about opening Christmas presents).
This argument does have some support from biological research which suggests than animals have an internal map of what sex they are and how they are supposed to act and feel in sex related situations. For example, birds don’t find out they are male or female by looking at their birdy privates (which they can’t see) they just know instinctively that they are male or female, and that they are supposed to conduct a range of behaviours appropriate to their genetic sex.
If gynephilic trannies do have insufficiently masculined brains in the sex department (but are otherwise relatively masculine) then the last thing they need to do is to hit the weights and take steroids or take uppers like cocaine. This is only likely to make them feel like uptight, anxious, aggressive, etc. They should be calming their brains rather than hyping them up.
Stupid idea? I'm talking crazy?
Then give me a better idea, 'cause the ones we got now ain't workin'.
Yeah, that wasn’t the one. Oh well. Only so much junk my brain can hold I guess.

I don’t care much if society decides to let men who chop off their wang and grow breasts with hormones officially become women. The percentage of men who want to do this seems to be out 1 in 500 to 1000, and we ought to show some compassion toward their plight.

Is ‘Romanian’ code for Gypsy/Roma? It usually is.
There's a lot to this, but I wonder if it was also at least in part an unfortunate side effect of having a larger than average crop of 120+ IQ women who weren't going to find mothering intellectually stimulating enough *plus* a tendency toward intellectual leftism since the right was historically the more anti-Semitic side *plus* a lack of value on traditional masculinity since Jewish men didn't engage in physical occupations historically.
I mean, feminists really do believe their own BS--they engage in behaviors repulsive to men and encourage each other not to reproduce, which doesn't sound to me like a very evolutionarily successful strategy. It's got to be a side product of something else. (And I doubt Kevin MacDonald's ideas apply here, since there's no evidence Jewish feminists spawn any more than gentile ones. Mercifully.)
BTW, ever wonder why there's so much intermarriage? ;)Replies: @Nico
Numerically or proportionately? I think the question of relative contribution is relevant here.
I also think that there are a number of strictly biological correlations and parallels to the phenomenon MacDonald lay out. If MacDonald were to write a sequel to The Culture of Critique he should collaborate with an evolutionary behavioral geneticist and a social historian to trace the reduction of the Jewish gene pool in the wake of mass conversions to Christianity during the final centuries of the Roman Empire.
One of my good friends – a Protestant – from second-year in school told me about watching Fiddler on the Roof with several Jewish friends back during adolescence. One of the girls was distraught: “How come the only pretty girl in the film was the Christian?!”
My friend didn’t have the heart to answer the question but she had no qualms acknowledging to me the truth.

My bet however is the half-Jewish info is probably wrong. I’d guess the percentage of babies up for adoption who are Jewish is under 0.5%. They are less likely to get knocked up young, more likely to get an abortion the rare events that do happen, and likely to have “waited too long” Jewish relatives or spinster aunts who would raise an unwanted baby.
I went to an evangelical christian summer bible day camp one month per summer for a few years.
My best friend’s mother talked my mother into making me attend. It was actually plenty of fun but I nonetheless objected on the grounds that I had to get up every morning in the summer at 7am.
The best part was probably sneaking off and kissing girls (closed mouth only, we were 9, 10, 11, and 12) and the muddy tug-of-war.
The least fun part was that we were given little fortune-cookie style slips of paper with a single bible verse every day and told to recite it the next morning.

You’re going to laugh, but I was peeved as a youngster by the lack of mention (name-dropping) of my country in the popular media I was viewing. To the lower classes before globalization, especially peasants, immigrating shamed your family by breaking the bond with the land, diminishing the extended family’s capacity for solidarity etc. There are even jokes about this, with a peasant wanting to go to America in the 1930, and going to the train station to get a ticket bound for a port city on the European Atlantic coast. The teller asks him where he’s going so he can give him the ticket, and the peasant shouts “what the f*** is it to you?”.

Basically the Bulgarians had a relationship with the Greeks where they'd either get paid off and help the Greeks fight their many enemies, or else they plunder the Byzantine countryside and possibly find a relative of the Emperor and install him in power over the non-cooperating Emperor. The tributes they demanded were reasonable, and they understood that they had to at least nominally acknowledge the superiority of the Byzantine emperor. Both groups were better off as allies, as the Greeks had more money, more advanced military tech and weaponry, and a solid navy, while the Bulgarian had numbers, physical size, and were braver in battle.
Here's a map showing an area of Europe under the Bulgarian Empire several times larger than the modern nation:

The poor lady got curious after ‘Backlash’ as to why the men were backlashing and performed the unfeminist step of *actually talking to the men*, resulting in (as Steve pointed out) ‘Stiffed’, which argued lower and middle class guys had been screwed by capitalism and deindustrialization. Wasn’t good for her career–you gotta keep throwing red meat to the misandrists.
I also wonder if people are claiming to have Jewish ancestors (not on the alt-right of course) because it makes them sound more interesting. Kind of like the whole ‘I have an Indian great-grandfather’, except it’s an excuse for business savvy instead of wilderness skills.

Hidden Jewish ancestry is common in Southern Europeans and Latin Americans.

The NY Times review quotes Faludi’s father as saying “Women get away with murder!”. I suspect that transsexuality is often about a combination of autogynephilia with an explicit envy of forms of ‘female privilege’ — I think that there’s a certain kind of hyper-macho guy who puts tremendous pressure on themselves to be aggressive, domineering, an asshole basically, and envies women because they don’t he believes they don’t have the internal pressure to be the Big Man all the time. Of course, these types tend to still be overbearing assholes even when they dress up as / pretend to be women. No doubt that quality has served them well in shoving trans ideology down everybody’s throats.
Bulgaria is amazingly obscure. When my son got a chance to go to Bulgaria for $400 I told him all about this 1990 World Cup game in Chicago I went to in Chicago where Bulgaria defeated Greece 4-0. My impression is that what makes a place a tourist attraction and famous is having at some point been top dog over your neighborhood and thus being able to tax your neighbors and thus afford to build a lot of future ruins. That’s hilarious, but they are undermining themselves. Bulgaria has a very interesting culture with regards to a number of hot topics, such as gender equality and multiculturalism. Their role in WWII is also fascinating and ought to be more known. Did your son enjoy his time there? Sofia is a really pleasant city despite its poverty, and Bulgarians have a surprisingly warm, open, and level-headed character considering their history and Balkan geography.
I am sure most people are aware of the concept that if you have a dog and a cat, which would you rather be the size of a tiger.
The same applies to humans. Considering the nature of men and women which sex would you rather be the more physically powerful one? It should be no surprise that impulsive violent men have more female brains and a tendency towards transgenderism.

Rather than characterizing it as an “odder aspect of our current society” might it be a little more to the point to say it is a predictable outcome of a society that is in decline? The USA’s only moral imperative anymore seems to be the epicurean ‘pursuit of pleasure/avoidance of pain’ mantra. Moral people realize that suffering is a normal and healthy part of life too. Without it how could parenting take place?
Americans don’t like leaders who are mentally ill. We’re just too caught up in epicurean pursuits to take real any real corrective action. So we allow the crazies to bubble up through the cracks and go right to the top.

The terminology used in the article is a bit dated. What was once frankly called ‘sex change’ surgery appears still to be known as ‘gender reassignment’ surgery across the pond.
Here in more-enlightened America we now call it gender confirmation surgery.
I suppose I’m the last Anglophone in the world who thinks of ‘gender’ as a term of grammar, and ‘sex’ as what is now known as gender.
One of the more appreciated gifts I ever gave was some rose essential from Bulgaria.
Highly recommended, and for your consideration.

Be interesting to study the inverse. My Ashkenazi mother has a reverential attitude towards all things Anglo-Saxon (for example, she grew up worshiping Robert E Lee). And, from a very early age, she was determined to marry a WASP, preferentially one with deep ancestral ties to the USA. That way, she felt, her children would be Anglo-American by blood, and not merely by choice.
As near as I can tell, her reasoning seems to be quite sound. I’m half-Ashkenazi , half English-Scottish, and my sense of personal identity is entirely Anglo.
Steve’s suspicions were black curly hair and love of verbal combat. That isn’t unreasonable. Steve does not look Ashkenazi at all to me, but really only half or so Ashkenazi look particularly Jewish, and the percentage is even low for halfies. Guessing from photos is a fool’s errand, but if I had to I’d saw either English or eastern Alpine/Slavic (Pole, Slovak, Swiss German, Austrian). Also, Steve is tall and mesomorphic, while tall Jews tend to be ectomorphs (famous examples: Howard Stern, Jeff Goldblum). The only 6-4ish Jewish mesomorph who is famous I can think of is Bob Einstein.
Probably the typical Ashkenazi trait that is strongest in mixed marriages is the curly hair, which I understand is a dominant trait. (Most physical appearance traits are complicated and polygenic, so I understand hair texture is not the simple 7th grade intro to genetics monogenic trait, just using it as a short-hand).
Curly hair is the one Ashkenazi feature I have too, I am light featured and do not have a Jewish nose. But let my hair grow out more than 3 or 4 inches and the result is a light brown JewFro with blond streaks from the sun. Last time I did this was five years ago and it was a hoot.
As near as I can tell, her reasoning seems to be quite sound. I'm half-Ashkenazi , half English-Scottish, and my sense of personal identity is entirely Anglo.Replies: @Lot
I’d be interested if you could expand on this a bit. Do you know when she decided this and why? My parents married young (born in the mid-50’s married in the mid 70’s) and were both the smartest kids in their high school classes (a year apart.)
There was not much choice, it was a middle class town less than 2% Jewish, and likely the vast majority of the Jews in such towns marry out. My oldest Jewish ancestor entered the USA in the 1850’s and fought in the Civil War, and all of them were here by the 1900 census, so I am kind of surprised they avoided intermarriage so long. Though the brother of the 1850’s immigrant and his wife, also a Prussian/Polish Jew, had a huge family, I think more than 10 children surviving to adulthood, and moved in the rural interior west, where I assume they were entirely merged into the local population.

No, I’ve never taken a DNA test. As an adoptee who is a full-time professional writer, it would seem like a natural topic for a book proposal or a long magazine article. But I’ve never gotten around to taking a test. And the thought that I ought to do something serious and potentially profitable with the topic getting a DNA test has discouraged me from using up what material I already have by blogging for free about it.
But someday, I hope, I’ll get the test and write the book, along with my idea for a book about how the St. Andrews golf course inspired the theory of evolution. But a Surfeit of Events keep providing me with plenty of material to write about 350-360 days per year as it is. A Trump presidency would probably wear my typing fingers to the bone.

They also let you do "gene lookups" when you see things about genes in the news. I was able to check, for example, if I had the newly discovery high IQ genes from a recent paper. Though they do not do a full sequencing, they target the "interesting" parts of the chromosome, so it is almost as good as a full sequence at much lower cost.

From very early childhood. Her father (an Ashkenazi from Latvia) was an ardent Anglophile (his favorite childhood reading was Sherlock Holmes in German translation). And he felt nothing but contempt for the traditional culture of Judaism. He inculcated those attitudes in his daughter, who was raised in a purely Anglo cultural environment: Nancy Drew, Little Women, Johnny Tremain, the Alice books, Edith Nesbit, Edward Eager, etc.

I am with you. Gender is a language term.
I’ve met Italian-American Catholic women who are quite left wing. Think of Nancy Pelosi.
I tend to agree with Derbyshire that we need different words for the fact and the act of sex at this point–it may be a sign of a degenerate society, but there you go.
Whenever I am given a form to fill-in with a "gender" category, I cross out "gender" and write "sex". If other people can insist that their own peculiar "gender identity" be respected, then I can goddamned well insist that my choice of word for it be respected. Especially so as "sex" is the traditional and accurate actual biological category.
We need to defend our language.

Now I was 13 years old and this was very early 1990s, *before* the Internet. You knew weird stuff, you had to read it in a book somewhere or someone told you. (I had an encyclopedia. Was fun to pull it open to a random entry. I went looking for sadness and…) The teacher was really, really, horrified, because *she* knew who he was, but none of the other kids did…but now they did, and they were going to ask their parents.
She wasn’t totally unsuccessful. I can see the *appeal* of having 100 varieties of cheese and appreciating 1000 varieties of wine, of philosophical dinner conversation as a pastime, and of movies with complex conversation instead of explosions. I have a huge regard for the French and their culture, it’s just not my bag.
23andme is considered the best of the low-cost DNA tests. at least that is what my research a few years ago showed. I was really happy with the results, they provide a lot of fun results. You should check out someone’s account if you know anyone who has done it.

I’m not talking about taking in a trannie runaway. But if you actually encounter one in person, making a point of being nice about pronouns is no big deal to you, but could mean a lot to someone who was dealt a sad set of cards in life. Regarding the intermarriage issue, I’ve wondered if one of the reason of high Ashkenazi IQ is selective intermarriage with high IQ gentiles along side the more established methods of eugenic fertility rates and the discarding of low IQ Jews into the surrounding population.

During the Byzantine era they were semi-reliable allies of the Greeks and controlled a fair amount of territory beyond modern Bulgaria. There was also a non-contiguous kingdom of Bulgarians in modern central Russia that was completely destroyed by the Mongolians.
Basically the Bulgarians had a relationship with the Greeks where they’d either get paid off and help the Greeks fight their many enemies, or else they plunder the Byzantine countryside and possibly find a relative of the Emperor and install him in power over the non-cooperating Emperor.

Sons and daughters of Hungarian Jews who travel to Budapest trying to understand their parents and then write books are becoming legion. Even my friend Gabi L. recently returned to Hungary to write a book on his Father. The phenomenon started with Michael Korda travelling to Hungary in 1956 and the newest is Susan Faludi. They all get it fantastically wrong. They return with the impression that, for example, their ancestors fed on paprikás csabai kolbász and went to church in their best on Saturday mornings. Yet Hungarian Jews would have never touched pork sausage and would never put a feet in a Christian church. To understand their ancestor’s environment they should have come to Jerusalem Batey Ungarin neighborhood or to Monsey in NY State. Susan is pitiable for having been brought up without roots, but the real villains are those parents who launched their children into life as “Jews” yet without even a remote idea or link to Jewish identity. They kept silent wishing to protect their children, but the damaged them instead.

You are correct. Gloves reduce the likelihood of hand damage. Gloves also reduce the likelihood of bleeding faces. A bare-knuckled punch is much more likely to result in facial cuts of the sort that would cause referees to stop bouts.
I don’t have the data to make the case but my strong suspicion is that MMA fighters suffer less brain trauma in the octagon than boxers do in the ring.

Here’s the sum total of everything I know about your country.

Bulgaria is amazingly obscure. When my son got a chance to go to Bulgaria for $400 I told him all about this 1990 World Cup game in Chicago I went to in Chicago where Bulgaria defeated Greece 4-0. He thought that sounded like a ridiculous thing to bring up in conversation with Bulgarians, but then it turned out that Bulgarians appreciated his anecdote about one of the highlights of their history.
My impression is that what makes a place a tourist attraction and famous is having at some point been top dog over your neighborhood and thus being able to tax your neighbors and thus afford to build a lot of future ruins. As far as I can tell, the territory of Bulgaria has never for long been an imperial capital so the locals never got to exploit their neighbors and build themselves spectacular stuff.
In contrast, when you're walking around Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, you have to imagine the locals taxed a lot of Bulgarian peasants over the years to be able to afford stuff like this.Replies: @ReaderfromGreece, @Anonymous Nephew, @Lot, @Jefferson, @Mr. Anon, @Romanian

This is a good thing. That means Bulgaria is going to remain majority White a lot longer than a Germany and a France for example.
Steve how would you react if you found out you have Ashkenazi DNA?

Well, that’s a very sad lens to view a country through, but it’s better than nothing.
“Curly hair is the one Ashkenazi feature I have too, I am light featured and do not have a Jewish nose.”
I have the Jewish nose, even though I am not Jewish. I am more likely to find my doppelganger in Israel or Lebanon than in Sweden or Finland.
Bulgaria might be the only country on the entire planet whiter now than 30 years ago. After the fall of the communist government around 1990 they chased out about half of their fairly large Turkish-speaking Muslim minority, about half went to Turkey the other half elsewhere in Europe.
Some towns in the one Muslim-majority province of Bulgaria have half the population they did in the late 80’s.
Possibly Costa Rica and Thailand are whiter in 2016 than 1986 due to Western retirees and low fertility native populations. Possibly Israel too after accepting so many ex-soviet Jews in the late 80’s and 90’s.

Bulgaria bans the burqa. Bulgaria can get away with stuff like this because they don't have CAIR, The National Council Of La Raza, Black Lies Matter, The Southern Poverty Law Center, The ACLU, or any other KKKrazy Glue Of The Democratic Fringe groups.

Bulgaria also doesn't have a Black president who lived in a Muslim country for a couple of years.
If Ashkenazi men value looks and IQ equally, but gentiles weight looks higher than IQ, you will end up with the Jews scooping up the homely high IQ gentile girls and often getting them to convert.
There’s a considerable amount of intermarriage between Jews and the gentile smart fraction. Donald Trump and Clinton both have etnically half-Jewish grandchildren. Pelosi has noted she has more grandchildren who practice Judaism than the average Jewish American woman.
The most intelligent white Christians, New England WASPs, can’t marry secular Jews fast enough and have been doing so for quite sometime. There are Jewish-Episcopalians all over the higher ranks of society – Sulzberger Jr, Colorado Senator Michael Bennett, Cap Weinberger, Goldwater, John Forbes Kerry were/are all half-WASP Jews. Howard Dean III married a Jewess.
As for Episcopalians, I don't get that phrase "Jews earn like Episcopalians but vote like Puerto Ricans". Jews earn like Episcopalians and vote like them, too, since Episcopalians are very liberal.Replies: @Anonymous

You'll never see so many happy elderly rich people in good repair as in La Jolla.
Prole white San Diego men who are single/divorced often retire to the baja coast and find themselves a Mexican girlfriend 20+ years their junior. A condo by the beach 2 hours south of the Mexican border/boarder/boreder costs about $120,000. The beachside condo complexes in Baja are 60%+ california plates in the parking lots.

Nope, they stay in their houses until they die mostly. “You can reassess the $37,000 Prop 13 valuation on my $2 million house out of my cold dead hands!”

Episcopalians haven’t been conservative since Coolidge, which was also the last time Jews were conservative. After the New Deal, New England WASPs have either been extreme progressive liberals like John Paul Stevens and Upton Sinclair or liberal Rockefeller establishment Republicans such as mayor Lindsay.

“I tend to agree with Derbyshire that we need different words for the fact and the act of sex at this point–it may be a sign of a degenerate society, but there you go.”
Whenever I am given a form to fill-in with a “gender” category, I cross out “gender” and write “sex”. If other people can insist that their own peculiar “gender identity” be respected, then I can goddamned well insist that my choice of word for it be respected. Especially so as “sex” is the traditional and accurate actual biological category.
We need to defend our language.
Macdonald doesn't like mentioning the +70% intermarriage rate of secular Jews because it contradicts his entire thesis Jews are acting with cryptic ethnic interests in mind. It's so contradictory to his viewpoint that one of his writers at Occidental Observer tried, and of course failed, to debunk the intermarriage rate statistics as being lower than portrayed by every survey on the topic.
But then again, his arguments and facts rarely fit together.Replies: @Lot, @Mr. Anon
“Macdonald doesn’t like mentioning the +70% intermarriage rate of secular Jews because it contradicts his entire thesis Jews are acting with cryptic ethnic interests in mind.”
Who says that outbreeding has nothing to do with ethnic interests? The hordes of Gengis Khan interbred extensively as they conquered and raped their way across asia. Was Gengis Khan ever accused of not pursuing his ethnic interests.
In any event, the remaining 30% of secular Jews who intermarry are, quite probably, consciously pursuing their perceived ethnic interests. 30% is a pretty big chunk.
Of course, the lack of ethnic self-interest among Jews is legendary. That’s why there’s a popular website called JDate. Tell me, is there a WDate – for white gentiles?
“But then again, his arguments and facts rarely fit together.”
You just don’t like his facts. Probably for highly ethnically interested reasons.

I’ve always been fascinated with Bulgaria precisely because it was a rather obscure place. I’ve always had a fascination with back of beyond places. And, as Anonymous Nephew pointed out, it has produced some really great folk music.
“In any event, the remaining 30% of secular Jews who intermarry are, quite probably, consciously pursuing their perceived ethnic interests. 30% is a pretty big chunk.”
30 percent is not a pretty big chunk. The percentage of Non Jewish Whites in the world who marry within their own race is way higher than 30 percent. Even in countries where Whites are the Minority, the majority of Whites still marry other Whites. Whites show their racial tribalism in marriage statistics.

There was an adoption agency in New York, the Louise Wise agency, that handled the cases of many Jewish adoptees decades ago. That agency has come up in the press a few times since the late 1990’s:

The phrase about earning like Episcopalians but voting like Puerto Ricans dates back to the late 1960’s when Episcopalians weren’t so liberal.
In the documentary Knocking a Jehovah’s Witness woman said that she used to babysit for Jews and thought Jewish men were great husbands so she wanted to marry a Jew. Her husband had been in concentration camps as a teen and saw how devoted Jehovah’s Witnesses were to their faith. Unlike other groups, JWs were allowed to leave the camps if they would sign a paper disavowing the religion, most refused. Their sons had zero interest in Judaism.
Poor quality video but better than nothing.
Stephen Dubner is co-author of Freakonomics. His parents met and married after they had both converted to Catholicism from Judaism. Stephen later returned to Judaism. He writes about the family in Turbulent Souls which has been republished as Choosing My Religion.
The guy is this video was raised Catholic along with his 10 siblings although their mother was born Jewish. He became an Hasidic Jew.
Again? Aren't you worried Steve that say 20 years from now you'll decide to become Jewish? I'm extrapolating from what you've written about transsexuals, but not extrapolating too much.Replies: @SFG, @syonredux, @Anonymous

Mr Sailer, I’m back from a trip to Asia. I have to tell you that, without meaning to, the Bulgarians have pulled off a coup in Asian countries. I entered a supermarket and browsed the shelves and, lo and behold, I found a host of dairy products called Bulgaria, made by the (Japanese I assume) Meiji corporation). And then it hit me. This was Thailand, but I’d seen the same brand in a number of Chinese cities and forgotten about it. The communist Bulgarians had become synonymous with good dairy products in communist China and they basically were adopted as a brand by a private company wishing to capitalize on that image. I was astounded and instantly envious 🙂 . They’re probably the most memetically known country in Central and Eastern Europe. The closest we Romanians ever got to such notoriety is by exporting Communist films to Red China (detective flicks, historical movies) which older people still associate with Romania (though not the younger, who have an abundance of media, including Chinese, to view nowadays).

Yes, there is a correlation with autism spectrum: https://sillyolme.wordpress.com/2014/09/21/autistic-sky/
While autogynephilia is progressive, it does not progress to transsexuality because they can’t get aroused… as MOST of them are still quite capable of erections right up to the day that they have SRS.
Please, if you are going to say things about them, learn about them?

Actually… that was MY first introduction to autogynephilic transsexuals in 1976, the day that I first attended a session at the Stanford University Medical Center’s Gender Dysphoria Clinic… 90% of them were wearing too much make-up and cocktail dresses, but a few of them were dressed like, and identified as bull dykes:
