From the NYT:

‘The Statue of Liberty Must Be Crying With Shame’
NOV. 21, 2015

by Nicholas Kristof

Do people ever get embarrassed by this kind of thing?

Steven Pinker pointed out in The Blank Slate 13 years ago the Reign of Shmaltz:

Sophisticated people sneer at feel-good comedies and saccharine romances in which everyone lives happily ever after. But when it comes to science, these same people say, “Give us schmaltz!” They expect the science of human beings to be a source of emotional uplift and inspirational sermonizing.

In reality, the Statue of Liberty is a beautiful French sculpture, a gift from France to celebrate American independence, not immigration, so if it were to be crying it would be for the French murdered by Muslim terrorists.

    Archie Bunker's contribution is worth remembering:

    That ain't the American Way, buddy. No, siree. Listen here, professor. You're the one who need an American History lesson. You don't know nothin' about Lady Liberty standin' there in the harbor, with her torch on high screamin' out to all the nations in the world: "Send me your poor, your deadbeats, your filthy." And all the nations send 'em in here, they come swarming in like ants. Your Spanish P.R.'s from the Caribboin, your Japs, your Chinamen, your Krauts and your Hebes and your English fags. All of 'em come in here and they're all free to live in their own separate sections where they feel safe. And they'll bust your head if you go in there. That's what makes America great, buddy.

    Replace the Statue of Liberty with a giant robot the same size. Because with the roboticization of many workplaces we need more unskilled third worlders like we need a hole in the head. We have enough unskilled legal+illegal immigrants to mow the lawns in the elite gated communities and to pick the fruits and vegetables. I could care less if Chipotle and its clones gets hit with higher labor costs. Matter of fact the boom in US ethnic restaurants is based on cheap immigrant slave labor. I can deal with half of them going out of business and the owners going back home to China, Lebanon, Mexico etc. where they have been depositing their skimmed cash for the last 20 years

    Perhaps as a compromise we could put next to it the concluding stanza of Thomas Bailey Aldrich's "Unguarded Gates," written in 1892 as a kind of riposte to Lazarus.

    O Liberty, white Goddess! is it well
    To leave the gates unguarded? On thy breast
    Fold Sorrow’s children, soothe the hurts of fate,
    Lift the down-trodden, but with hand of steel
    Stay those who to thy sacred portals come
    To waste the gifts of freedom. Have a care
    Lest from thy brow the clustered stars be torn
    And trampled in the dust. For so of old
    The thronging Goth and Vandal trampled Rome,
    And where the temples of the Cæsars stood
    The lean wolf unmolested made her lair.

    It still packs a punch, since despite being blackballed from modern poetry anthologies a google search will turn up a first page replete with angry denunciations of it by academics trying to warn readers away ("You're not a racist, are you?" "Wicked!").

    We can follow the Founding Fathers on the on hand, or Emma Lazarus on the other. Not both. The Founders said, in the Preamble to the Constitution, that the US was set up for "Ourselves and Our Posterity".

    Not the whole 3rd world.

    Kristoff's previous schmaltzy column on Syrian refugees had comments.... they were allowed. It costs money to monitor comments so I can't fault the NY Times for not having them all the time. But sometimes you know they are omitted to avoid flack from conservatives. And liberals too when it comes to immigration and Europe being flooded with so called Syrian refugees. This is why Trump is going to get lots of votes from libs and moderates if he ends up running against Hillary. November 2016 Trump can win every state except for California. The only Democrat sure thing is California. All other states are in play.
    More Muslim attacks in Europe and more illegal immigrant crimes in America that get traction in the mass media, will mean more votes for Trump from non-Conservative Americans.

    I'm wondering if the NYT may have found the answer to its problem of contrary opinions from readers. Simply title the article in such a way that only readers who agree with the premise will feel inclined to read the article. Then, provide a hackneyed introductory paragraph that makes reading the article unnecessary even for those who already agree.

    , @Daniel H
    @onetwothree

    I noticed that too. I first noticed it with the Houellebecq OPED. To Houellebecq's essay I couldn't find a single concurring opinion to Houellebecq among the respondents. Very strange. We know that the NY Times has lots of readers who do disagree and vehemently challenge the party line. Furthermore, it seemed that all the critical comments to Houellebecq adopted the same tone and point of criticism: that Houellebecq is beyond the pale, half nuts. Now the NY Times wouldn't fabricate responses, would they? Nah.

  5. Because of poetaster Miss Lazarus,
    schmaltz today obscures the avarice
    of the VOLAG’s that sell our birthright to hell,
    immigration’s been plainly disastrous.

  6. That it’s the Statue of *Liberty* not the “Statue of Immigration Schmaltz” or a giant “Immigrants Welcome!” sign seems to escape these folks.

    Immigration enthusiasm is not just worthless, it’s actually stupid and harmful. Whereas “Liberty” is pretty darn cool.

    And the fact is no one does liberty better than Anglo Saxons. Everyone else is a least a bit–to a whole bunch–inferior at liberty. Muslims–at least currently–are absolutely terrible at liberty even in even absolute terms, not to mention their inability to get along with everyone else in a society, nor the reality that there presence inevitably requires security measures that encroach upon historic liberties and that presence of muslims allows the super-state to strip away even more liberty in the name of “tolerance”, “diversity” and policing “hate”.

    Cheerleading bringing is not just not what the Statue of Liberty stands for–i.e. Liberty–it is positively antithetical to having liberty.

    I think this cold civil war that has been brewing among whites has reached a point where there is no chance of reconciliation. Whatever unenlightened whites on the Right support or oppose you can pretty much bet the enlightened whites will oppose or support.

    It seems clear they only support bringing in more Syrians and others because, and only because, the Right is against it. Their whole purpose in life is to stomp on our faces and make our lives as miserable as possible. Thus, they continue to double down on immigration despite the fact they know the newcomers are not assimilating and do in fact change our culture, as described in that previous post by the Belgian war photographer.

    This latest column by Kristof is just more social signaling. I’ve seen it all week over the Paris attacks. We all know that when Roof shot up the SC church, the Left would not let up and blamed Roof, unenlightened whites and even the rebel flag. Now after the Paris attacks they blame every body but the culprits. And to show they have no evil thoughts they are going to double down on the refugee scam even though the refugees’ own cousins and coreligionists, who have tremendous wealth and are only a stones throw away, want absolutely nothing to do with them. That alone should tell you all you need to know. But since unenlightened whites are against it, it must be good.

    Don't overlook the ecstasy they feel at the prospect of sending diversity to your neighborhood for you to enjoy because they know that you don't want it. This is a huge motivation for them. They're clearly not wanting to house the refugees in the Upper West Side, in Westchester, in Georgetown, in Malibu, in Palo Alto, no sirree, the yokels need to take the refugees and the section 8ers because diversity is double plus good for the yokels because they have the temerity to have wrongthink positions, unlike the good people who have the rightthink positions.

    "Give Me Schmaltz, or Give Me Death!"

    , @AndrewR
    @iSteveFan

    Not to be "that guy" but it hasn't exactly been a one way thing. Reflexive contrarianism is a pathology that has stricken the right just as virulently as the left. The most recent example that sticks out to me is the article by the admitted pedophile on Salon. Granted, I have read a few reasoned arguments on why it was bad for Salon to post that (namely, pointing to Rotherham as an example of why it's dangerous to let the left add more groups to its protection racket), but the vast majority of the response from the right has been pure id. Pedophiles are the most universally reviled group in society, and mindless outrage is a major raison d'être for most folks, so that article gave them an easy excuse to show their vile side, not at all unlike how Freddie Gray's death gave so many yoofs an excuse to show theirs. Most people seem to prefer the solipsistic gratification they get from outrage and aggression over the long-term interests of society.

    And as to your very first sentence, I'm not sure the point of no return was recently.

  8. A wave of anarchist terror ended the first age of immigration almost exactly 100 years ago. Perhaps, Nicholas Kristof could write about that.

    When referring to the culture which the Muslims will "never blend into" as you put it, why did you put the word "our" in quotes?

    If it isn't "ours", then whose is it?

    Really. Answer me. I want to try to comprehend how your mind works.

    Can you not bring yourself to say "our culture" without distancing yourself from the phrase through the use of quote marks? Can you not honor the hard work and accomplishments of the millions who came before you who sacrificed and strove to make life better for what would have been, for them, the future inhabitants of this culture? Have you no sense of gratitude? Or humility? Or appreciation of all the hard work by previous generations to make it so that you didn't have to fight the same battles they did?

    Do you never reflect on the notion that all of the people who are scrambling over one other to get here are doing so to enjoy just those benefits that you so casually dismiss and distance yourself from with your quote marks, "our" civilization?

    Don't throw away your inheritance. Learn about it and master it. It's incredible and your real task is to make yourself worthy of it. Now clean up your body and mind and get to work! Right this instant!

    This post is designed to provoke. But I will say it anyway: the Muslims are the New Nazis, not the new Jews. And in 1945 thousands of Nazis were on the run from the Russians, who wanted to kill them. No reason to take them in our country.

    , @AnotherDad
    @Cullen

    Cullen you should critically read your own post and ask yourself, "Do i actually have any sort of argument?"

    I'm often amazed\amused\irritated by how utterly *empty* leftist arguments tend to be. Unable to muster any sort of data, or serious analysis of *actual human realities*, they are just name calling--"racist!", "sexist!", "rich!" (a real laugher), "homophobe!", "bigot!". Yours is "xenophobic!", with the "argument" essentially that Muslims are like Jews and Jews were fine.

    Unpacking ...

    1) The Jews have been a disaster for the American nation.
    The *American* *nation* is dying. We're heading toward being a Jewified\Asiafied--ergo somewhat smarter--version of Brazil. A giant playpen for the rich and powerful, but no actual nation at all. When our epitaph is written, Christian openness\trust--traits which help us create the best nations in the world, but also allow others to roll us--will have to get a big mention, but the Jews will have the starring role.

    Even beyond the demographic disaster, the nation has been transformed in the Jewish image--from republican, agricultural and industrial, with growing equality, and a common American identity; to rule by elite diktat, rent-seeking, financialization, growing inequality, and a chippy hostile minoritarianism. Does anyone in their right mind think this is better?

    (Note: the Jews are just the worst of it. This idea that the "Great Wave" was great for America is ridiculous. Were the Italians bringing highly organized criminal gangs a big win for Americans? Heck, were my Irish ancestors a big benefit to the native Anglos? The Germanics tended to be better, more disciplined farmers and interbred rather seamlessly. But overall the Anglo-Saxons would have been much better off keeping the nation to themselves and filling it with natural increase. Now their great effort of settlement and experiment with republican constitutional government are going down the crapper.)

    2) Muslims and Jews are not comparable groups.
    Even if you blindly think Jews have been a benefit to America, the rest of your argument is implicitly asserting "Jews have been ok, muslims will be ok too ... ergo white man shut up!"

    Cullen, seriously what planet did you just step off from to come up with that? Did you ever think that maybe Jews and Muslims *have their own characteristics* other than not being liked by "xenophobic" white gentiles? In other words, that they are something other than props in your good minorities, bad whites psychodrama?

    The differences here are too big to even attempt to tackle--i could go book length easily. In brief:
    Jews:
    -- tribal religion (essentially one God and we're his chosen people so screw you!) and Christian hostile
    -- endogamous group religiously enforced
    -- high IQ (Ashkenazi that came to US)
    -- 2000 year history of hostility toward, but profitable interaction--trading, rent-seeking, looting--with white gentiles

    In contrast Muslims:
    -- universal religion (essentially universalized Judaism) in world wide competition with Christianity with a scriptural requirement\encouragement to jihad against non-believers
    -- lots of tribal endogamy, but religiously oriented to overall exogamy, including religiously sanctioned right of conquest of infidels' women
    -- low IQ populations; the religion is universal so there isn't a "muslim IQ", but it is practiced by populations that average lower IQs; (from tiny groups just a few points lower like Albanians, to groups a bit lower like Iranians; to much lower IQs in Arabs, Pakis, SE Asians; to hugely lower IQs in the huge African muslim populations swarming across the Mediterranean)
    -- 1400 years of near continual Muslim attacks upon Christendom. Only in the last 500 or so did Christians mostly turn the tide. But the Turks was at the Gates of Vienna as late as 1683. Only in the last say 300 did Christendom decisively win out with our higher IQ, our development of science and better, stronger, more cohesive nations (nationalism!).

    To say "Jews worked out, so Muslims will work out" is just ... stupid. Different peoples, different results.

    So much for your "argument".

    Muslims are over represented among the poor welfare under class in Western countries, not over represented among the wealthy 1 percent Western elites.

    Arab Muslims in Western countries are Semites with education levels and household incomes resembling that of Hispanics and African Americans.

    Arab Muslims are the dumb Semites and the Jews are the smart Semites.

    Commenter jackson is correct. The name of the statue that the French gave us as a birthday present in 1876 is "Liberty Enlightening the World." That's why the Lady is carrying the torch. What she's enlightening the world with has nothing to do with invite-invade. It's the ideas of the American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence. Therefore the date on the book she's holding. Emma Lazarus's schmaltzy poem was tacked on years later. Edouard Laboulaye, who started the campaign to send us the statue was the most prominent French classical liberal of this time, though he was sadly mistaken on the character of the War Between the States.

    Don’t forget Israel! And, hasn’t time proven it to be somewhat true, at least for a non-negligible minority in high places? They just released Jonathan Pollard. How complex were his motivations?

    • Replies: @Clyde
    @Romanian

    My impression is that Israel had half given up on Jonathon Pollard.

    Israel objected to the US/Europe Iran deal for months and Netanyahu even addressed the UN Assembly about it. Trying to shame this third world flotsam and jetsam for going along with this lifting of Iran sanctions.
    Obama released Pollard at this time to make it seem that after all of Israel's objections. To make it seem that Israel finally agreed to the Iran deal just so long as they could get their spy released from a US prison. Which is 100% false but many simple minds will believe this.

    If Israel wanted Pollard released then the last thing they wanted was his release simultaneously with the signing of this traitorous Iran deal. In which the USA unfreezes $150 billion for Iran. We have been holding this money since the the Shah of Iran fell and the fanatics took over. Seems to me Iran is getting the accumulated interest too making the total 150 billion of free money for the Ayatollahs to spend on nukes, advanced weaponry, on an improved higher tech internal security apparatus, on anything.

    Israel had no problem with Assad except when he was acting as Iran's errand boy. The border with Syria has been quiet with 30+ years. Even now , Israel has been careful to remain neutral in the Syrian civil war - their ground rules are that they retaliate if anyone (whether Assad or rebel) violates their frontier but otherwise they will just watch while the Syrians kill each other.

Interestingly, he himself stresses the fact that he grew up on a farm, but is silent about the fact that his parents were professors. the idea for the Statue of Liberty was first proposed by Edouard de Laboulaye the president of the French Anti-Slavery Society

    When referring to the culture which the Muslims will “never blend into” as you put it, why did you put the word “our” in quotes?

    If it isn’t “ours”, then whose is it?

    Really. Answer me. I want to try to comprehend how your mind works.

    Can you not bring yourself to say “our culture” without distancing yourself from the phrase through the use of quote marks? Can you not honor the hard work and accomplishments of the millions who came before you who sacrificed and strove to make life better for what would have been, for them, the future inhabitants of this culture? Have you no sense of gratitude? Or humility? Or appreciation of all the hard work by previous generations to make it so that you didn’t have to fight the same battles they did?

    Do you never reflect on the notion that all of the people who are scrambling over one other to get here are doing so to enjoy just those benefits that you so casually dismiss and distance yourself from with your quote marks, “our” civilization?

    Don’t throw away your inheritance. Learn about it and master it. It’s incredible and your real task is to make yourself worthy of it. Now clean up your body and mind and get to work! Right this instant!

    That it's the Statue of *Liberty* not the "Statue of Immigration Schmaltz" or a giant "Immigrants Welcome!" sign seems to escape these folks.

    Immigration enthusiasm is not just worthless, it's actually stupid and harmful. Whereas "Liberty" is pretty darn cool.

    And the fact is no one does liberty better than Anglo Saxons. Everyone else is a least a bit--to a whole bunch--inferior at liberty. Muslims--at least currently--are absolutely terrible at liberty even in even absolute terms, not to mention their inability to get along with everyone else in a society, nor the reality that there presence inevitably requires security measures that encroach upon historic liberties and that presence of muslims allows the super-state to strip away even more liberty in the name of "tolerance", "diversity" and policing "hate".

    Cheerleading bringing is not just not what the Statue of Liberty stands for--i.e. Liberty--it is positively antithetical to having liberty.

With Virginia, Missouri, Iowa, and Colorado wavering, and New York and Oregon thus far abstaining, ie, staying home.

    Now let's plug this into an Electoral College calculator (using 2012 distribution of electors) to see how a presidential candidate might fare if he follows the lead of these governors:

    311-- Red states alone
    364-- incl. beige ("considering a surrender")
    385-- incl. grey ("don't know how to help refugees")
    421-- incl. white ("hoping it all goes away")

You don’t know nothin’ about Lady Liberty standin’ there in the harbor, with her torch on high screamin’ out to all the nations in the world: “Send me your poor, your deadbeats, your filthy.” And all the nations send ’em in here, they come swarming in like ants. Your Spanish P.R.’s from the Caribboin, your Japs, your Chinamen, your Krauts and your Hebes and your English fags. All of ’em come in here and they’re all free to live in their own separate sections where they feel safe. And they’ll bust your head if you go in there. That’s what makes America great, buddy.

    Obama released Pollard at this time to make it seem that after all of Israel’s objections.

    Slightly off-topic, but rather than a special register for immigrants, as some say Trump proposed, how about a state-of-the-art biometric national ID to replace our cardboard Social Security cards? It would be shown whenever you use a credit or debit card, write a check, and in other similar situations where proof of identity is routinely required. If you lose or misplace your ID a fingerprint scan could quickly confirm your identity. A similar technology could be used for visas.

    This is obviously a timely idea. Isn't there some way to get an online petition started? Anybody know how to do that?

    Replies: @SFG, @Ttjy, @anonymous, @Mr. Anon, @Clyde

    I like the idea of an ID card. Nobody asks for ID when you use a credit card though. They should.

    Most office buildings have security that checks your ID before your go in. Is anybody going to be just let in to a GM plant and roam around?

    In my office we are supposed to report people who don’t have an ID or who piggyback at the card swiper. Why shouldn’t we be reporting illegals in a country? A country is like a company only larger. It’s our private property and we don’t want anybody just loitering just like companies don’t.

    People need to be started to be asked for their “papers” .Maybe it’s too much, but at this point I wouldn’t mind it.

    Minimum they should require each employer to verify that you aren’t illegal. However, we do have too many legal foreigners in this country too.

There's still time to stop it getting too bad, but a national identification system to verify the immigration status of prospective employees is necessary at this stage.

What she’s enlightening the world with has nothing to do with invite-invade. It’s the ideas of the American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence. Therefore the date on the book she’s holding. Emma Lazarus’s schmaltzy poem was tacked on years later. Edouard Laboulaye, who started the campaign to send us the statue was the most prominent French classical liberal of this time, though he was sadly mistaken on the character of the War Between the States.

Thus, they continue to double down on immigration despite the fact they know the newcomers are not assimilating and do in fact change our culture, as described in that previous post by the Belgian war photographer.

    This latest column by Kristof is just more social signaling. I've seen it all week over the Paris attacks. We all know that when Roof shot up the SC church, the Left would not let up and blamed Roof, unenlightened whites and even the rebel flag. Now after the Paris attacks they blame every body but the culprits. And to show they have no evil thoughts they are going to double down on the refugee scam even though the refugees' own cousins and coreligionists, who have tremendous wealth and are only a stones throw away, want absolutely nothing to do with them. That alone should tell you all you need to know. But since unenlightened whites are against it, it must be good.

    Not to be “that guy” but it hasn’t exactly been a one way thing. Reflexive contrarianism is a pathology that has stricken the right just as virulently as the left. The most recent example that sticks out to me is the article by the admitted pedophile on Salon. Granted, I have read a few reasoned arguments on why it was bad for Salon to post that (namely, pointing to Rotherham as an example of why it’s dangerous to let the left add more groups to its protection racket), but the vast majority of the response from the right has been pure id. Pedophiles are the most universally reviled group in society, and mindless outrage is a major raison d’être for most folks, so that article gave them an easy excuse to show their vile side, not at all unlike how Freddie Gray’s death gave so many yoofs an excuse to show theirs. Most people seem to prefer the solipsistic gratification they get from outrage and aggression over the long-term interests of society.

    And as to your very first sentence, I’m not sure the point of no return was recently.

    I know American universities aren't projecting the best possible image right now, but don't you think quality of education also matters? Have you heard of diploma mills? If a PhD gets you in, watch as the numbers soar. And even legitimate holders are constrained by the realities of HBD and the rigors of trusting the signal value of a diploma from a society where one looks out for tribe and clan first and where corruption is a daily occurrence.

    PS One should also remember that it is brain rape to take the doctors, technicians and other representatives of the smart fraction from a country, That country invested scarce resources in their training and possibly has a very limited smart fraction. Taking the best ones is tantamount to condemning it to have less potential tomorrow than it had yesterday. Even the ability of the population to produce such smarts is placed in jeopardy. And people notice that the country cannot be rebuilt as before, because something valuable is missing, and then they will all leave.

    My own country suffers from an extensive brain drain, which EU freedoms have made inevitable and impossible to curb. Chicken and egg - you have to grow the economy fast enough to keep people in, but it will never grow if all the best move away. My country could grow at 10% a year for 10 years and still not reach German salary levels for doctors. Meanwhile, the doctors are a visible and often discussed part of the brain drain. People might say they will only leave temporarily, but if they have children abroad, if they never gain the facility with the language, if they have social capital built up, friendships etc they will never come back, after having left in the most productive and fertile part of their lives.

    Just as an example, Germany has 4 doctors per thousand people (plus auxiliaries, resources etc). Romania has 2.5 (it produces more but exports). Syria has 1.5, and it did not really export until recently. Ghana had 0.1. So a Ghanaian doctor making a life in the West is actually leaving 10,000 of his countrymen without a doctor. It's good for him, but bad policy for development.

    Of course, third world countries replenish their populations and exceed them rapidly. It's only in Eastern Europe that poverty is associated with low fertility, due to the peculiar European elasticity of fertility in relation to resources.

    Has anyone given one minute of thought to what is to become of Syria? I assume Syria will be reconstituted in some form once this war is done. How then will Syria be able to rebuild and become a functioning nation without its human capital?

    All these progressives who are keen on importing Syrians are in effect acting like modern day colonial powers extracting resources from some poor nation. Taking human resources is probably worse than taking natural ones. I just don't see how Syria will rebuild if all of its best talent is skimmed off. There has to be a plan to move these people back home.

    I think progressives should be put on the spot to publicly defend why they support the colonial practice of human resource extraction, and what that portends for the future of these poor nations.

RI occasionally elects pro-life and/or Republican officials, but they've been very solidly Dem in Presidential elections for 50 years, excepting '72 and '84 only. NY is Andrew Cuomo Land. If Trump becomes Prez, he may take some or most or even all or at least almost all of these states in a reelection campaign in '20, similar to Nixon '72 / Reagan '84.

    I’m often amazed\amused\irritated by how utterly *empty* leftist arguments tend to be. Unable to muster any sort of data, or serious analysis of *actual human realities*, they are just name calling–“racist!”, “sexist!”, “rich!” (a real laugher), “homophobe!”, “bigot!”. Yours is “xenophobic!”, with the “argument” essentially that Muslims are like Jews and Jews were fine.

    Unpacking …

    1) The Jews have been a disaster for the American nation.
    The *American* *nation* is dying. We’re heading toward being a Jewified\Asiafied–ergo somewhat smarter–version of Brazil. A giant playpen for the rich and powerful, but no actual nation at all. When our epitaph is written, Christian openness\trust–traits which help us create the best nations in the world, but also allow others to roll us–will have to get a big mention, but the Jews will have the starring role.

    Even beyond the demographic disaster, the nation has been transformed in the Jewish image–from republican, agricultural and industrial, with growing equality, and a common American identity; to rule by elite diktat, rent-seeking, financialization, growing inequality, and a chippy hostile minoritarianism. Does anyone in their right mind think this is better?

    (Note: the Jews are just the worst of it. This idea that the “Great Wave” was great for America is ridiculous.

    Even if you blindly think Jews have been a benefit to America, the rest of your argument is implicitly asserting “Jews have been ok, muslims will be ok too … ergo white man shut up!”

    Cullen, seriously what planet did you just step off from to come up with that? Did you ever think that maybe Jews and Muslims *have their own characteristics* other than not being liked by “xenophobic” white gentiles? In other words, that they are something other than props in your good minorities, bad whites psychodrama?

    The differences here are too big to even attempt to tackle–i could go book length easily. In brief:
    Jews:
    — tribal religion (essentially one God and we’re his chosen people so screw you!) and Christian hostile
    — endogamous group religiously enforced
    — high IQ (Ashkenazi that came to US)
    — 2000 year history of hostility toward, but profitable interaction–trading, rent-seeking, looting–with white gentiles

    In contrast Muslims:
    — universal religion (essentially universalized Judaism) in world wide competition with Christianity with a scriptural requirement\encouragement to jihad against non-believers
    — lots of tribal endogamy, but religiously oriented to overall exogamy, including religiously sanctioned right of conquest of infidels’ women
    — low IQ populations; the religion is universal so there isn’t a “muslim IQ”, but it is practiced by populations that average lower IQs; (from tiny groups just a few points lower like Albanians, to groups a bit lower like Iranians; to much lower IQs in Arabs, Pakis, SE Asians; to hugely lower IQs in the huge African muslim populations swarming across the Mediterranean)
    — 1400 years of near continual Muslim attacks upon Christendom. Only in the last 500 or so did Christians mostly turn the tide. But the Turks was at the Gates of Vienna as late as 1683. Only in the last say 300 did Christendom decisively win out with our higher IQ, our development of science and better, stronger, more cohesive nations (nationalism!).

    To say “Jews worked out, so Muslims will work out” is just … stupid. Different peoples, different results.

    So much for your “argument”.

    Most Jews were more in the labor-socialist camp (which I'm sure you're not fond of either), what happened was the relative *lack* of racism in the USA meant they were able to rise to the point where they became elites and did all the awful things you describe.

    Also, hostility's pretty mutual--there's a long medieval history of pogroms, bad stuff happening in the Crusades, the Inquisition, and so on. It actually died down in the USA with its lack of feudal history.

    As for the endogamy, it's pretty much fallen apart with a 70% intermarriage rate.

    Here's my argument against the 'natural increase' camp--you could never have settled the country and turned it into an industrial superpower without all the Italians, Irish, and Germans who filled out the country. You just couldn't get the native Britishers to produce enough kids, and we'd have rival powers trying to make a move.

    Without Jews, you'd have less stupid liberalism, but you'd probably be out the Bomb. Also, Jim Crow was costing us huge points in the Cold War--the standard counterargument to 'what is the wage of a Soviet engineer' was 'In America they lynch Negroes!'. Of course, I can definitely see a rural Southerner totalling up the ledger differently from me--it's his world that was destroyed.

    One way or another, I think we should shut down immigration for about 20-30 years to allow the new arrivals to, well, assimilate, and should actively encourage them to do so. The endless anti-Americanism in the schools has to stop--are we really so much worse than England, with its Third World colonies, France, with its Third World colonies, Russia, with its enslavement of Eastern Europe, China, with its eight-digit death tolls under Mao, or Germany, with... Jack, you're trolling me know here, just trying to demonstrate an intense ethnocentrism and contempt for the capabilities of the natives of the nation your parents came to.

    In order:

    1. Be maybe 50% black by now due to greater black fertility and no corresponding white immigration.

    This is your best point, but way overstated. More realistic 20%. Without "The Great Wave" or the current wave, the same 40m blacks out of a total population of roughly 200m.

    But ... while the Latin Americans don't create the problems blacks do, Jewish political\cultural\financial power is fiercely behind the current immigration wave which has driven the non-white population percentage even higher than this theoretical 20%. With more coming. I’d much rather live with the 20% blacks, than the future America with whites a minority.

    2. Have lost millions of more men in WWII because there would have been no Manhattan Project without Jewish brains.

    The Manhattan project was not started by Jews. It was Anglos that got it underway. The Brits had been concerned at the outbreak of the war, and they'd conducted some experiments to estimate critical mass and pushed the Americans to get going. Significant gentiles--guys like Lawerence and Compton. Even Fermi is not a great wave Italian, but the sort of incredible talent anyone lets in.

    But even if we give all the credit to Oppenheimer and company--and i'm certainly ready to believe without Jews they wouldn't have been ready in July of '45 ... "millions more"?

    Uh ... no. Japan was already beaten. We'd have just continued Curtis LeMay's firebombing--which was incredibly deadly itself--until ready for invasion. Casualty estimates were in the hundreds of thousands. I'm no expert on the end-of-war Japanese politics--i've read a couple books--and i'd certainly argue the bomb game the peace faction some cover, but we ended up with the surrender and keep the our emperor deal which had been floated previously.

    3. Have a lot more cripples because of no polio vaccine.

    Huh? The Anglos created mondern vaccine technology starting with folks like Jenner. This postwar push wasn’t some brilliant individual breakthrough by Salk or Sabine, it was a bunch of work by a lot of folks. The folks who figured out how to isolate the polio virus and grow it in the lab were the ’54 Nobel Prize winners, Enders, Weller and Robbins—Anglo gentiles. Minus Salk and Sabine, some gentile would have had a vaccine no more than a year or two later. The technological moment had simply arrived. The most productive vaccine creator of all time is some Germanic gentile from Montana--Hilleman.

    4. Be a really boring place because there would be no Hollywood, no radio, etc.

    Now you're really blasting off to planet ethnocentrism. No radio? Marconi was Jewish? Who knew?

    Seriously "boring place"? If i start making a list of the things that bring me joy, that have made life interesting, enjoyable, non-boring--number one, my kids, then oh sex, food, friends, road trips, family travel, reading (mostly history), Christmas with the family, hiking and camping, basketball (20-40 years back when I had wheels and energy), my daughters playing the piano, working with the scouts in my son's scout troop, iSteve ... crap from Hollywood's Jews is a ways down on the list. Heck, even talking movies—which i do enjoy—my favorites are those big David Lean (Anglo gentile) movies from the 60s—Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago. The typical Jewish yap, yap, yap stuff is amusing--for a bit in small doses. But it's hardly something i need in my life. And honestly, i realize a lot of people like this crap, but i could live a long and happy life without the Three Stooges, the Marx Brothers, Jerry Lewis or this obnoxious twerp out there now, Adam Sandler.

    Do you think the Brits, the French, the Swedes, the Italians, the Japanese, the Finns, the Chinese, the Indians find their lives "really boring" without Hollywood? Pretty sure most folks can get a long fine, tell their own stories and entertain themselves just fine without the Jews.

    5. With millions fewer people, might have lost the Cold War.

    The Soviet Union had a larger population. If you think this was a population contest, and say 50 million people in 1970 was a critical factor ... don't know what to say. I think it's called "missing the point".

    ~~~
    Look I get it, you love your people and really don’t like them being criticized. That’s pretty much par for the course.
    But if you’re peddling this “America needed the Jews”, it’s just nonsense. The US became the leading power on the planet around 1900—greatest industrial capacity, highest GDP, highest per capita income. The Jews had basically nothing to do with that. Jews who’d been around a while were few and the only ones who you could argue had any impact were the German-Jewish financiers (ex. Goldman-Sachs). (The ones who blackballed your grandpa from joining their gold club.)
    But the even more example is the leading power the US replaced—Britain. Edward I kicked the Jews out in the late 13th century. In the next 350 Jew-less years, they went from being a tiny European backwater, to being a legitimate European power, including having their Elizabethan golden age. Cromwell let a few Jews back in but the numbers were tiny. Jews weren’t completely emancipated until the mid-late 19th century—after the Catholics. Even in 1900 their numbers were small and it’s hard to think of many of great note—David Ricardo, Disraeli (converted to COE) come to mind. Meanwhile the Brits, sailed the seas, created parliamentary democracy and rule of law, were at the forefront of developing modern science (Newton, Boyle, Faraday, Darwin, Galton, Maxwell, Rutherford …), oppressed my Irish ancestors, established far flung colonies, pioneered the industrial revolution, built an empire. Hey, I’m half Irish Catholic in background, but I can read. The Anglos did the heaviest lifting in building the modern world.
    Their spin-off colonies—Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States—are all highly successful, free (still though modern “diversity” leftism is stripping that away), prosperous, pretty much regarded as some of the best places to live on the planet. Your idea, that Anglos need Jews to discover stuff, do science or medicine, invent stuff, build bombs or cure disease or even entertain themselves—“without Jews West Virginia”—is just loony.
    The more credible question: Why do the Jews insist on hanging around? If you’re so wonderful, and we stupid white gentile hayseeds are just dragging you down … why don’t you just … leave! You have your own country now! The wandering can be over. You can really do “next year in Jerusalem!” Why do you keep hanging around and hanging around, while bad mouthing us as a bunch of racist, gun-toting, pickup driving dummies, and demanding our nations be disemboweled with “diversity”? Seems like the arrow of dependency runs the other way.
    In a way, the policy of INVITE is linked with INVADE.
    If West goes for INVADE but not INVITE, it sends the message that the West is at war with the Muslim world. It turns into an issue of us versus them.
    And that would rob the West of the moral justification to INVADE and intervene.
    After all, if the West hates the Muslim world and sees it as the enemy, the West should stay out of the Middle East, and ALL Muslims should hate the US(and the aggressive West).
    The only way the West can justify its INVADE policy in the Middle East is to show that it ‘cares’ about all those Muslims. ‘We want to save you, not kill you.’
    US did the same in Vietnam. ‘We want to save you, not destroy you.’
    To destroy Vietnam, US had to act like it was saving it.
    Same goes for the Middle East. The West cannot leave the region cuz of Israel and Jewish agenda. So, it needs some kind of moral justification.
    So, even as the West treats the Muslim world as the enemy in its military actions, it must act like it is full of compassion for the Muslim world in ‘humanitarian’ matters.
    Hug warmly and beat with a big stick.
    PS. For those who say it is un-american for US to reject ‘refugees’, I would say it is un-american for American to pursue foreign policy that creates these ‘refugees’ in the first place.
    I think VT, MA, RI, NY, and MD are also a lock for the Dems.
    Because those states are underpopulated with only 35 million people? Because the best way to reduce unemployment and protect the environment in those states is to add 35 million more, almost all "of color"? And the locals can't wait to ebrace them?
    All those hippies didn't move to Vermont because they were suicidal. They moved there because they were not. If their little Eden is threatened, why wouldn't they desert the Wicked Witch of the Center?
    Replies: @AndrewR, @Hibernian
    They’re very liberal states. The “Take Back Vermont” movement of about 10-15 years ago didn’t go anywhere. MD and MA have Republican governors, but MA’s is very moderate, and MD’s is a very low key conservative. RI occasionally elects pro-life and/or Republican officials, but they’ve been very solidly Dem in Presidential elections for 50 years, excepting ’72 and ’84 only. NY is Andrew Cuomo Land. If Trump becomes Prez, he may take some or most or even all or at least almost all of these states in a reelection campaign in ’20, similar to Nixon ’72 / Reagan ’84.
    Perhaps as a compromise we could put next to it the concluding stanza of Thomas Bailey Aldrich’s “Unguarded Gates,” written in 1892 as a kind of riposte to Lazarus.
    O Liberty, white Goddess! is it well
    To leave the gates unguarded? On thy breast
    Fold Sorrow’s children, soothe the hurts of fate,
    Lift the down-trodden, but with hand of steel
    Stay those who to thy sacred portals come
    To waste the gifts of freedom. Have a care
    Lest from thy brow the clustered stars be torn
    And trampled in the dust. For so of old
    The thronging Goth and Vandal trampled Rome,
    And where the temples of the Cæsars stood
    The lean wolf unmolested made her lair.
    It still packs a punch, since despite being blackballed from modern poetry anthologies a google search will turn up a first page replete with angry denunciations of it by academics trying to warn readers away (“You’re not a racist, are you?” “Wicked!”).
    It is well to keep in mind two points:
    (1) Man's best friend was once his worst enemy; yesterday's lean wolf was made today's Lassie by those animated by Lazarus's temperament. That's spirit will always be welcome among wise and prudent men.
    (2) It is nonetheless the case that throughout the history of our nation of immigrants that spirit has not always enjoyed the upper hand; periods where it waxed have been followed by those where it has waned, without any obvious damage to the spirit or the nation itself. To the contrary, such periods seem necessary to the continued health of both.
And people notice that the country cannot be rebuilt as before, because something valuable is missing, and then they will all leave.
    My own country suffers from an extensive brain drain, which EU freedoms have made inevitable and impossible to curb. Chicken and egg – you have to grow the economy fast enough to keep people in, but it will never grow if all the best move away. My country could grow at 10% a year for 10 years and still not reach German salary levels for doctors. Meanwhile, the doctors are a visible and often discussed part of the brain drain. People might say they will only leave temporarily, but if they have children abroad, if they never gain the facility with the language, if they have social capital built up, friendships etc they will never come back, after having left in the most productive and fertile part of their lives.
    Just as an example, Germany has 4 doctors per thousand people (plus auxiliaries, resources etc). Romania has 2.5 (it produces more but exports). Syria has 1.5, and it did not really export until recently. Ghana had 0.1. So a Ghanaian doctor making a life in the West is actually leaving 10,000 of his countrymen without a doctor. It’s good for him, but bad policy for development.
    Of course, third world countries replenish their populations and exceed them rapidly. It’s only in Eastern Europe that poverty is associated with low fertility, due to the peculiar European elasticity of fertility in relation to resources.
With Virginia, Missouri, Iowa, and Colorado wavering, and New York and Oregon thus far abstaining, ie, staying home.
    Now let’s plug this into an Electoral College calculator (using 2012 distribution of electors) to see how a presidential candidate might fare if he follows the lead of these governors:
    311— Red states alone
    364— incl. beige (“considering a surrender”)
    385— incl. grey (“don’t know how to help refugees”)
    421— incl. white (“hoping it all goes away”)
If a PhD gets you in, watch as the numbers soar. And even legitimate holders are constrained by the realities of HBD and the rigors of trusting the signal value of a diploma from a society where one looks out for tribe and clan first and where corruption is a daily occurrence.
    PS One should also remember that it is brain rape to take the doctors, technicians and other representatives of the smart fraction from a country, That country invested scarce resources in their training and possibly has a very limited smart fraction. Taking the best ones is tantamount to condemning it to have less potential tomorrow than it had yesterday. Even the ability of the population to produce such smarts is placed in jeopardy. And people notice that the country cannot be rebuilt as before, because something valuable is missing, and then they will all leave.
    My own country suffers from an extensive brain drain, which EU freedoms have made inevitable and impossible to curb. Chicken and egg - you have to grow the economy fast enough to keep people in, but it will never grow if all the best move away. My country could grow at 10% a year for 10 years and still not reach German salary levels for doctors. Meanwhile, the doctors are a visible and often discussed part of the brain drain. People might say they will only leave temporarily, but if they have children abroad, if they never gain the facility with the language, if they have social capital built up, friendships etc they will never come back, after having left in the most productive and fertile part of their lives.
    Just as an example, Germany has 4 doctors per thousand people (plus auxiliaries, resources etc). Romania has 2.5 (it produces more but exports). Syria has 1.5, and it did not really export until recently. Ghana had 0.1. So a Ghanaian doctor making a life in the West is actually leaving 10,000 of his countrymen without a doctor. It's good for him, but bad policy for development.
    Of course, third world countries replenish their populations and exceed them rapidly. It's only in Eastern Europe that poverty is associated with low fertility, due to the peculiar European elasticity of fertility in relation to resources.
    @Cullen
    Cullen you should critically read your own post and ask yourself, "Do i actually have any sort of argument?"
    I'm often amazed\amused\irritated by how utterly *empty* leftist arguments tend to be. Unable to muster any sort of data, or serious analysis of *actual human realities*, they are just name calling--"racist!", "sexist!", "rich!" (a real laugher), "homophobe!", "bigot!". Yours is "xenophobic!", with the "argument" essentially that Muslims are like Jews and Jews were fine.
    Unpacking ...
    1) The Jews have been a disaster for the American nation.
    The *American* *nation* is dying. We're heading toward being a Jewified\Asiafied--ergo somewhat smarter--version of Brazil. A giant playpen for the rich and powerful, but no actual nation at all. When our epitaph is written, Christian openness\trust--traits which help us create the best nations in the world, but also allow others to roll us--will have to get a big mention, but the Jews will have the starring role.
    Even beyond the demographic disaster, the nation has been transformed in the Jewish image--from republican, agricultural and industrial, with growing equality, and a common American identity; to rule by elite diktat, rent-seeking, financialization, growing inequality, and a chippy hostile minoritarianism. Does anyone in their right mind think this is better?
    (Note: the Jews are just the worst of it. This idea that the "Great Wave" was great for America is ridiculous. Were the Italians bringing highly organized criminal gangs a big win for Americans? Heck, were my Irish ancestors a big benefit to the native Anglos? The Germanics tended to be better, more disciplined farmers and interbred rather seamlessly. But overall the Anglo-Saxons would have been much better off keeping the nation to themselves and filling it with natural increase. Now their great effort of settlement and experiment with republican constitutional government are going down the crapper.)
    2) Muslims and Jews are not comparable groups.
    Even if you blindly think Jews have been a benefit to America, the rest of your argument is implicitly asserting "Jews have been ok, muslims will be ok too ... ergo white man shut up!"
    Cullen, seriously what planet did you just step off from to come up with that? Did you ever think that maybe Jews and Muslims *have their own characteristics* other than not being liked by "xenophobic" white gentiles? In other words, that they are something other than props in your good minorities, bad whites psychodrama?
    The differences here are too big to even attempt to tackle--i could go book length easily. In brief:
    Jews:
    -- tribal religion (essentially one God and we're his chosen people so screw you!) and Christian hostile
    -- endogamous group religiously enforced
    -- high IQ (Ashkenazi that came to US)
    -- 2000 year history of hostility toward, but profitable interaction--trading, rent-seeking, looting--with white gentiles
    In contrast Muslims:
    -- universal religion (essentially universalized Judaism) in world wide competition with Christianity with a scriptural requirement\encouragement to jihad against non-believers
    -- lots of tribal endogamy, but religiously oriented to overall exogamy, including religiously sanctioned right of conquest of infidels' women
    -- low IQ populations; the religion is universal so there isn't a "muslim IQ", but it is practiced by populations that average lower IQs; (from tiny groups just a few points lower like Albanians, to groups a bit lower like Iranians; to much lower IQs in Arabs, Pakis, SE Asians; to hugely lower IQs in the huge African muslim populations swarming across the Mediterranean)
    -- 1400 years of near continual Muslim attacks upon Christendom. Only in the last 500 or so did Christians mostly turn the tide. But the Turks was at the Gates of Vienna as late as 1683. Only in the last say 300 did Christendom decisively win out with our higher IQ, our development of science and better, stronger, more cohesive nations (nationalism!).
    To say "Jews worked out, so Muslims will work out" is just ... stupid. Different peoples, different results.
    So much for your "argument".
    Most Jews were more in the labor-socialist camp (which I’m sure you’re not fond of either), what happened was the relative *lack* of racism in the USA meant they were able to rise to the point where they became elites and did all the awful things you describe.
    Also, hostility’s pretty mutual–there’s a long medieval history of pogroms, bad stuff happening in the Crusades, the Inquisition, and so on. It actually died down in the USA with its lack of feudal history.
    As for the endogamy, it’s pretty much fallen apart with a 70% intermarriage rate.
    Here’s my argument against the ‘natural increase’ camp–you could never have settled the country and turned it into an industrial superpower without all the Italians, Irish, and Germans who filled out the country. You just couldn’t get the native Britishers to produce enough kids, and we’d have rival powers trying to make a move.
    Without Jews, you’d have less stupid liberalism, but you’d probably be out the Bomb. Also, Jim Crow was costing us huge points in the Cold War–the standard counterargument to ‘what is the wage of a Soviet engineer’ was ‘In America they lynch Negroes!’. Of course, I can definitely see a rural Southerner totalling up the ledger differently from me–it’s his world that was destroyed.
    One way or another, I think we should shut down immigration for about 20-30 years to allow the new arrivals to, well, assimilate, and should actively encourage them to do so. The endless anti-Americanism in the schools has to stop–are we really so much worse than England, with its Third World colonies, France, with its Third World colonies, Russia, with its enslavement of Eastern Europe, China, with its eight-digit death tolls under Mao, or Germany, with… Yeah. I do not see it.
    They would have pointed to something else, as they often did: crime; wealth disparity. There is a lot of ruin in a nation. Apologizing at the national level just shows weakness. Obama did an apology tour to start his tenure. What good did that do?
    you’d probably be out the Bomb
    Maybe not the best example.
    Here’s my argument against the ‘natural increase’ camp–you could never have settled the country and turned it into an industrial superpower without all the Italians, Irish, and Germans who filled out the country. You just couldn’t get the native Britishers to produce enough kids, and we’d have rival powers trying to make a move.
    Well, the rival powers are making their moves now by sending their people via commercial travel with a rehearsed sob story, so it looks like we lost the thing anyway.
    Superpower status is overrated; it might have been better to keep a smaller part of the country that we could have controlled with a natural increase.
    We all heard of the era of 'Jim Crow' many many times.
    Maybe we should say we are living in the era of Jonathan Pollard.
    In this era, Jews can pretty get away with anything and be showered with prizes for simply being a Jew.
    This isn't much of an exaggeration for Pollard if it were changed to 'Jewish like me'.
    Elites have power over the masses. It’s simple. Elites simply have more money, more control, more connections, more privilege, and etc.
    But how do elites gain control over the elites?
    That is trickier.
    Suppose a bunch of Jewish elites in Wall Street have 100 billion dollars.
    Suppose a bunch of gentile elites in Texas oil fields have 100 billion dollars.
    They are equal in monetary power as elites.
    So, how does one bunch of elites gain control over another bunch of elites.
    It is about controlling what is ‘respectable’. Elites want money but also respectability. Indeed, respectability can mean more money or less money.
    It’s like what this column says:
    http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2015/08/09/trump-american-ruling-class-tyranny-column/31371813/
    “Today’s ruling class, from Boston to San Diego, was formed by an educational system that exposed them to the same ideas and gave them remarkably uniform guidance, as well as tastes and habits. These amount to a social canon of judgments about good and evil, complete with secular sacred history, sins (against minorities and the environment), and saints. Using the right words and avoiding the wrong ones when referring to such matters — speaking the ‘in’ language — serves as a badge of identity. Regardless of what business or profession they are in, their road up included government channels and government money because, as government has grown, its boundary with the rest of American life has become indistinct. Many began their careers in government and leveraged their way into the private sector.”
    Who controls the ‘in’ language. This is where control of media, academia, and law are crucial.
    The new ‘in’ language requires homophilia.
    It’s like, in order to work in Hollywood, one has to be sensitive to even Bruce ‘Caitlyn’ Jenner in order to be ‘respectable’. (I welcome the tranny stuff cuz it’s turning PC into a joke even for some Libs who can’t keep a straight face.)
    Money is not enough. We saw what happened to Donald Sterling just because he lost his respectable status.
    That is how elites control elites. And that is why GOP sucks so bad. It seeks respectability but doesn’t control its content. So, it has to play to stuff like MLK-worship, Israel-worship, and even homo-philia. (Consider that cuckaroo Charles Murray who changed his position on ‘gay marriage’. )
    Paradoxically, the cult of ‘inclusiveness’ is actually very exclusive of people who refuse to conform to ever-changing rules of what is ‘respectable’.
Can you not honor the hard work and accomplishments of the millions who came before you who sacrificed and strove to make life better for what would have been, for them, the future inhabitants of this culture? Have you no sense of gratitude? Or humility? Or appreciation of all the hard work by previous generations to make it so that you didn't have to fight the same battles they did?
    Do you never reflect on the notion that all of the people who are scrambling over one other to get here are doing so to enjoy just those benefits that you so casually dismiss and distance yourself from with your quote marks, "our" civilization?
    Don't throw away your inheritance. Learn about it and master it. It's incredible and your real task is to make yourself worthy of it. Now clean up your body and mind and get to work! Right this instant!
    Cullen you should critically read your own post and ask yourself, "Do i actually have any sort of argument?"
    I'm often amazed\amused\irritated by how utterly *empty* leftist arguments tend to be. Unable to muster any sort of data, or serious analysis of *actual human realities*, they are just name calling--"racist!", "sexist!", "rich!" (a real laugher), "homophobe!", "bigot!". Yours is "xenophobic!", with the "argument" essentially that Muslims are like Jews and Jews were fine.
    Unpacking ...
    1) The Jews have been a disaster for the American nation.
    The *American* *nation* is dying. We're heading toward being a Jewified\Asiafied--ergo somewhat smarter--version of Brazil. A giant playpen for the rich and powerful, but no actual nation at all. When our epitaph is written, Christian openness\trust--traits which help us create the best nations in the world, but also allow others to roll us--will have to get a big mention, but the Jews will have the starring role.
    Even beyond the demographic disaster, the nation has been transformed in the Jewish image--from republican, agricultural and industrial, with growing equality, and a common American identity; to rule by elite diktat, rent-seeking, financialization, growing inequality, and a chippy hostile minoritarianism. Does anyone in their right mind think this is better?
    (Note: the Jews are just the worst of it. This idea that the "Great Wave" was great for America is ridiculous. Were the Italians bringing highly organized criminal gangs a big win for Americans? Heck, were my Irish ancestors a big benefit to the native Anglos? The Germanics tended to be better, more disciplined farmers and interbred rather seamlessly. But overall the Anglo-Saxons would have been much better off keeping the nation to themselves and filling it with natural increase. Now their great effort of settlement and experiment with republican constitutional government are going down the crapper.)
    2) Muslims and Jews are not comparable groups.
    Even if you blindly think Jews have been a benefit to America, the rest of your argument is implicitly asserting "Jews have been ok, muslims will be ok too ... ergo white man shut up!"
    Cullen, seriously what planet did you just step off from to come up with that? Did you ever think that maybe Jews and Muslims *have their own characteristics* other than not being liked by "xenophobic" white gentiles? In other words, that they are something other than props in your good minorities, bad whites psychodrama?
    The differences here are too big to even attempt to tackle--i could go book length easily. In brief:
    Jews:
    -- tribal religion (essentially one God and we're his chosen people so screw you!) and Christian hostile
    -- endogamous group religiously enforced
    -- high IQ (Ashkenazi that came to US)
    -- 2000 year history of hostility toward, but profitable interaction--trading, rent-seeking, looting--with white gentiles
    In contrast Muslims:
    -- universal religion (essentially universalized Judaism) in world wide competition with Christianity with a scriptural requirement\encouragement to jihad against non-believers
    -- lots of tribal endogamy, but religiously oriented to overall exogamy, including religiously sanctioned right of conquest of infidels' women
    -- low IQ populations; the religion is universal so there isn't a "muslim IQ", but it is practiced by populations that average lower IQs; (from tiny groups just a few points lower like Albanians, to groups a bit lower like Iranians; to much lower IQs in Arabs, Pakis, SE Asians; to hugely lower IQs in the huge African muslim populations swarming across the Mediterranean)
    -- 1400 years of near continual Muslim attacks upon Christendom. Only in the last 500 or so did Christians mostly turn the tide. But the Turks was at the Gates of Vienna as late as 1683. Only in the last say 300 did Christendom decisively win out with our higher IQ, our development of science and better, stronger, more cohesive nations (nationalism!).
    To say "Jews worked out, so Muslims will work out" is just ... stupid. Different peoples, different results.
    So much for your "argument".
    That's a legitimate position. But I only gave that example to illustrate the point. This was about Syria. Although it's difficult to anticipate these things, as Nassim Taleb wrote about the war in his native Lebanon, I don't think we're at risk for civil war, just for enduring mediocrity. But Syria is undergoing a civil war and a mass displacement of population. If you skim the best people off the top, and the country cannot recover, it makes another civil war very likely, or another mass movement of population, especially given their youth bulge. These are the places which end up producing jihadism for lack of a better alternative to tie young people down, and which will have to be invaded or bombed or garrisoned. I read that article on America's Empire of Bases throughout the world, including Africa. Is there not a non-trivial correlation between the extent to which African elites have left their countries after independence, and the state of Africa today, including recurring violence? Or a cost of skimming the human talent that is borne not just by the states in question, but by the West as well?
    Perhaps as a compromise we could put next to it the concluding stanza of Thomas Bailey Aldrich's "Unguarded Gates," written in 1892 as a kind of riposte to Lazarus.
    O Liberty, white Goddess! is it well
    To leave the gates unguarded? On thy breast
    Fold Sorrow’s children, soothe the hurts of fate,
    Lift the down-trodden, but with hand of steel
    Stay those who to thy sacred portals come
    To waste the gifts of freedom. Have a care
    Lest from thy brow the clustered stars be torn
    And trampled in the dust. For so of old
    The thronging Goth and Vandal trampled Rome,
    And where the temples of the Cæsars stood
    The lean wolf unmolested made her lair.
    It still packs a punch, since despite being blackballed from modern poetry anthologies a google search will turn up a first page replete with angry denunciations of it by academics trying to warn readers away ("You're not a racist, are you?" "Wicked!").
    It is well to keep in mind two points:
    (1) Man’s best friend was once his worst enemy; yesterday’s lean wolf was made today’s Lassie by those animated by Lazarus’s temperament. That’s spirit will always be welcome among wise and prudent men.
    (2) It is nonetheless the case that throughout the history of our nation of immigrants that spirit has not always enjoyed the upper hand; periods where it waxed have been followed by those where it has waned, without any obvious damage to the spirit or the nation itself. To the contrary, such periods seem necessary to the continued health of both.
    There is nothing here to which reasonable men cannot come to agreement.
    • Replies: @Richard
    @Desiderius
    I don't understand how you can claim that the Miss Lazaruses of this world invented Lassie. Domestication of wild animals is achieved by selective breeding, by permitting into an artificially restricted gene pool only those individuals with certain desired traits. That requires an Aldrich, not a person with an unreflective "Give me the wretched refuse of your teeming shore" attitude.
    I also cannot agree that there's been no obvious damage to our nation from these periods of immigration. To name one clear example of letting the wolf into the house, the U.S. mafia is entirely a product of the wave of migration that Lazarus trumpeted. It's naive to pretend that there are no costs to demographically altering a region or country. Unfortunately it's difficult for many to see because, good or bad, we in 2015 are a product of actions taken in the past and hence what people in the 19th century would see as damage we merely look at as "change" to which all our institutions, schools and elite establishments have a vested interest in talking up as good. New England's shift, for example, from a Republican stronghold to a Democratic one was driven by the mass immigration of Irish and Italians in the 19th and early 20th century, such that an area once defined by pig-headed Protestant Puritanism was majority Catholic by the time of Ted Kennedy's heyday. (For what might have been, note that in 2012 Mitt Romney won the New England white Protestant vote, what's left of it.) John Fitzgerald Kennedy's defeat of an old style New Englander named Henry Cabot Lodge in the 1952 Senate race is "good" because Kennedy represented the New America and the New America is what's right, but in coldly neutral terms it was just the demographic chickens purchased decades earlier finally coming home to roost. If on the other hand you rather liked the Old America, too bad.
    Most Jews were more in the labor-socialist camp (which I'm sure you're not fond of either), what happened was the relative *lack* of racism in the USA meant they were able to rise to the point where they became elites and did all the awful things you describe.
    Also, hostility's pretty mutual--there's a long medieval history of pogroms, bad stuff happening in the Crusades, the Inquisition, and so on. It actually died down in the USA with its lack of feudal history.
    As for the endogamy, it's pretty much fallen apart with a 70% intermarriage rate.
    Here's my argument against the 'natural increase' camp--you could never have settled the country and turned it into an industrial superpower without all the Italians, Irish, and Germans who filled out the country. You just couldn't get the native Britishers to produce enough kids, and we'd have rival powers trying to make a move.
    Without Jews, you'd have less stupid liberalism, but you'd probably be out the Bomb. Also, Jim Crow was costing us huge points in the Cold War--the standard counterargument to 'what is the wage of a Soviet engineer' was 'In America they lynch Negroes!'. Of course, I can definitely see a rural Southerner totalling up the ledger differently from me--it's his world that was destroyed.
    One way or another, I think we should shut down immigration for about 20-30 years to allow the new arrivals to, well, assimilate, and should actively encourage them to do so. The endless anti-Americanism in the schools has to stop--are we really so much worse than England, with its Third World colonies, France, with its Third World colonies, Russia, with its enslavement of Eastern Europe, China, with its eight-digit death tolls under Mao, or Germany, with... Yeah. I do not see it.
    Well, the rival powers are making their moves now by sending their people via commercial travel with a rehearsed sob story, so it looks like we lost the thing anyway.
    Superpower status is overrated; it might have been better to keep a smaller part of the country that we could have controlled with a natural increase.
Although it’s difficult to anticipate these things, as Nassim Taleb wrote about the war in his native Lebanon, I don’t think we’re at risk for civil war, just for enduring mediocrity. But Syria is undergoing a civil war and a mass displacement of population. If you skim the best people off the top, and the country cannot recover, it makes another civil war very likely, or another mass movement of population, especially given their youth bulge. These are the places which end up producing jihadism for lack of a better alternative to tie young people down, and which will have to be invaded or bombed or garrisoned. I read that article on America’s Empire of Bases throughout the world, including Africa. Is there not a non-trivial correlation between the extent to which African elites have left their countries after independence, and the state of Africa today, including recurring violence? Or a cost of skimming the human talent that is borne not just by the states in question, but by the West as well?
    This idea that the “Great Wave” was great for America is ridiculous....
    Your alternate reality Judenrein, Italian free, all Anglo-Saxon America would:
    1. Be maybe 50% black by now due to greater black fertility and no corresponding white immigration.
    2. Have lost millions of more men in WWII because there would have been no Manhattan Project without Jewish brains.
    3. Have a lot more cripples because of no polio vaccine.
    4. Be a really boring place because there would be no Hollywood, no radio, etc.
    5. With millions fewer people, might have lost the Cold War.
    and so - on. It wouldn't be the whitopia of your imagination. Maybe the whole country would be one big West Virginia.
    All immigrant groups have pluses and minuses (this should apply not just to groups but to individual potential immigrants)- the question is whether the pluses outweigh the minuses. But apparently you never met an immigrant group or immigrant that you liked.
    Jack, you’re trolling me know here, just trying to demonstrate an intense ethnocentrism and contempt for the capabilities of the natives of the nation your parents came to.
    In order:
    1. Be maybe 50% black by now due to greater black fertility and no corresponding white immigration.
    This is your best point, but way overstated. More realistic 20%. Without “The Great Wave” or the current wave, the same 40m blacks out of a total population of roughly 200m.
    But … while the Latin Americans don’t create the problems blacks do, Jewish political\cultural\financial power is fiercely behind the current immigration wave which has driven the non-white population percentage even higher than this theoretical 20%. With more coming. I’d much rather live with the 20% blacks, than the future America with whites a minority.
    2. Have lost millions of more men in WWII because there would have been no Manhattan Project without Jewish brains.
    The Manhattan project was not started by Jews. It was Anglos that got it underway. The Brits had been concerned at the outbreak of the war, and they’d conducted some experiments to estimate critical mass and pushed the Americans to get going. Significant gentiles–guys like Lawerence and Compton. Even Fermi is not a great wave Italian, but the sort of incredible talent anyone lets in.
    But even if we give all the credit to Oppenheimer and company–and i’m certainly ready to believe without Jews they wouldn’t have been ready in July of ’45 … “millions more”?
    Uh … no. Japan was already beaten. We’d have just continued Curtis LeMay’s firebombing–which was incredibly deadly itself–until ready for invasion. Casualty estimates were in the hundreds of thousands. I’m no expert on the end-of-war Japanese politics–i’ve read a couple books–and i’d certainly argue the bomb game the peace faction some cover, but we ended up with the surrender and keep the our emperor deal which had been floated previously.
    3. Have a lot more cripples because of no polio vaccine.
    Huh? The Anglos created mondern vaccine technology starting with folks like Jenner. This postwar push wasn’t some brilliant individual breakthrough by Salk or Sabine, it was a bunch of work by a lot of folks. The folks who figured out how to isolate the polio virus and grow it in the lab were the ’54 Nobel Prize winners, Enders, Weller and Robbins—Anglo gentiles. Minus Salk and Sabine, some gentile would have had a vaccine no more than a year or two later. The technological moment had simply arrived. The most productive vaccine creator of all time is some Germanic gentile from Montana–Hilleman.
    4. Be a really boring place because there would be no Hollywood, no radio, etc.
    Now you’re really blasting off to planet ethnocentrism. No radio? Marconi was Jewish? Who knew?
    Seriously “boring place”? If i start making a list of the things that bring me joy, that have made life interesting, enjoyable, non-boring–number one, my kids, then oh sex, food, friends, road trips, family travel, reading (mostly history), Christmas with the family, hiking and camping, basketball (20-40 years back when I had wheels and energy), my daughters playing the piano, working with the scouts in my son’s scout troop, iSteve … crap from Hollywood’s Jews is a ways down on the list. Heck, even talking movies—which i do enjoy—my favorites are those big David Lean (Anglo gentile) movies from the 60s—Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago. The typical Jewish yap, yap, yap stuff is amusing–for a bit in small doses. But it’s hardly something i need in my life. And honestly, i realize a lot of people like this crap, but i could live a long and happy life without the Three Stooges, the Marx Brothers, Jerry Lewis or this obnoxious twerp out there now, Adam Sandler.
    Do you think the Brits, the French, the Swedes, the Italians, the Japanese, the Finns, the Chinese, the Indians find their lives “really boring” without Hollywood? Pretty sure most folks can get a long fine, tell their own stories and entertain themselves just fine without the Jews.
    5. With millions fewer people, might have lost the Cold War.
    The Soviet Union had a larger population. If you think this was a population contest, and say 50 million people in 1970 was a critical factor … don’t know what to say. I think it’s called “missing the point”.
    ~~~
    Look I get it, you love your people and really don’t like them being criticized. That’s pretty much par for the course.

    But if you’re peddling this “America needed the Jews”, it’s just nonsense. The US became the leading power on the planet around 1900—greatest industrial capacity, highest GDP, highest per capita income. The Jews had basically nothing to do with that. Jews who’d been around a while were few and the only ones who you could argue had any impact were the German-Jewish financiers (ex. Goldman-Sachs). (The ones who blackballed your grandpa from joining their gold club.)

    But the even more example is the leading power the US replaced—Britain. Edward I kicked the Jews out in the late 13th century. In the next 350 Jew-less years, they went from being a tiny European backwater, to being a legitimate European power, including having their Elizabethan golden age. Cromwell let a few Jews back in but the numbers were tiny. Jews weren’t completely emancipated until the mid-late 19th century—after the Catholics. Even in 1900 their numbers were small and it’s hard to think of many of great note—David Ricardo, Disraeli (converted to COE) come to mind. Meanwhile the Brits, sailed the seas, created parliamentary democracy and rule of law, were at the forefront of developing modern science (Newton, Boyle, Faraday, Darwin, Galton, Maxwell, Rutherford …), oppressed my Irish ancestors, established far flung colonies, pioneered the industrial revolution, built an empire. Hey, I’m half Irish Catholic in background, but I can read. The Anglos did the heaviest lifting in building the modern world.

    Their spin-off colonies—Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States—are all highly successful, free (still though modern “diversity” leftism is stripping that away), prosperous, pretty much regarded as some of the best places to live on the planet. Your idea, that Anglos need Jews to discover stuff, do science or medicine, invent stuff, build bombs or cure disease or even entertain themselves—“without Jews West Virginia”—is just loony.

    The more credible question: Why do the Jews insist on hanging around? If you’re so wonderful, and we stupid white gentile hayseeds are just dragging you down … why don’t you just … leave! You have your own country now! The wandering can be over. You can really do “next year in Jerusalem!” Why do you keep hanging around and hanging around, while bad mouthing us as a bunch of racist, gun-toting, pickup driving dummies, and demanding our nations be disemboweled with “diversity”? Seems like the arrow of dependency runs the other way.

    I suppose anything is possible, but our friend Cullen tends to write things like “Muslims are the new Jews!” and “I see so many white tears!” that either aren’t worthy of that, or have already been dealt with ad nauseum.

    That’s nice, but in the world of reality, if you’ll look, most of the time people here simply argue with him at length, which seems to be a waste of time, as he never comes back to defend his original statement (much like a common internet troll). It’s pretty rare that someone like me cries about him being a troll.

    Whats the matter with us developing our own native talent? It's something we should do and don't. If young boy shows genius and comes from a poor or average family and is in a public school he's screwed. The fact there are few programs for gifted kids in our schools or even the means to suss them out.

    Not only that our own STEM people are underemployed and suffer from age discrimination(you hit 40 and you're on your way out) as well. IMS only 50% are still employed in the fields they were trained for.

    Personally I'm very leery of importing foreigners for skull work. They aren't loyal, our FBI and CIA pulled their hair out over Chinese American scientists who went over to the Chi-Coms with minimal prodding and costing us dearly. Jews are just as bad, many have been caught over years selling military secrets to the Israelis. I doubt Hindus coming from a corrupt and rotting culture will be much better.

    I'll point out one other thing. Silicon Valley despite sucking up foreign talent like a vacuum cleaner has ceased innovating. What's coming out now is junk, mostly social media apps, middle-ware, spy-ware and data-mining programs. Look at all the major companies - they're software houses that are little more than a mass of server racks doing social media, selling ad space and data mining(Facebook and Google). Companies don't innovate they buy out start ups which is a sure sign of that even the biggest SV companies can't do in-house R&D anymore.

    Or look at our space program, we're still dependent on Russian rocket motors. Talk about regression compared to the 60's and early 70's when were already testing nuclear rocket engines(NERVA).

    The lean wolf unmolested made her lair.

    It still packs a punch, since despite being blackballed from modern poetry anthologies a google search will turn up a first page replete with angry denunciations of it by academics trying to warn readers away (“You’re not a racist, are you?” “Wicked!”).

    It is well to keep in mind two points:

    (1) Man's best friend was once his worst enemy; yesterday's lean wolf was made today's Lassie by those animated by Lazarus's temperament. That's spirit will always be welcome among wise and prudent men.

    (2) It is nonetheless the case that throughout the history of our nation of immigrants that spirit has not always enjoyed the upper hand; periods where it waxed have been followed by those where it has waned, without any obvious damage to the spirit or the nation itself. To the contrary, such periods seem necessary to the continued health of both.

    There is nothing here to which reasonable men cannot come to agreement.

    Replies: @Richard

    I don’t understand how you can claim that the Miss Lazaruses of this world invented Lassie. Domestication of wild animals is achieved by selective breeding, by permitting into an artificially restricted gene pool only those individuals with certain desired traits. That requires an Aldrich, not a person with an unreflective “Give me the wretched refuse of your teeming shore” attitude.

    I also cannot agree that there’s been no obvious damage to our nation from these periods of immigration. To name one clear example of letting the wolf into the house, the U.S. mafia is entirely a product of the wave of migration that Lazarus trumpeted. It’s naive to pretend that there are no costs to demographically altering a region or country. Unfortunately it’s difficult for many to see because, good or bad, we in 2015 are a product of actions taken in the past and hence what people in the 19th century would see as damage we merely look at as “change” to which all our institutions, schools and elite establishments have a vested interest in talking up as good. New England’s shift, for example, from a Republican stronghold to a Democratic one was driven by the mass immigration of Irish and Italians in the 19th and early 20th century, such that an area once defined by pig-headed Protestant Puritanism was majority Catholic by the time of Ted Kennedy’s heyday. (For what might have been, note that in 2012 Mitt Romney won the New England white Protestant vote, what’s left of it.) John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s defeat of an old style New Englander named Henry Cabot Lodge in the 1952 Senate race is “good” because Kennedy represented the New America and the New America is what’s right, but in coldly neutral terms it was just the demographic chickens purchased decades earlier finally coming home to roost. If on the other hand you rather liked the Old America, too bad.

    However domestication of the dog started, it wasn't by letting a wild wolf into somebody's home, unless maybe it was restrained in a cage in a manner that would make Emma Lazarus shriek. You just didn't think this one through.

    Concert isn't the word I'd use, although maybe that's a case of the present needing to justify its own past.

    You're not making much of a point here. Would you prefer it if, mixed in with Saxons and Normans, the medieval British Isles also took in a few more waves of Turks, Gold Coast Africans, Arabs, and other jars of strange vintage? You're arguing something not in dispute (that immigration shapes the future), while sidestepping the crux, which is whether we're making a future that we want for ourselves and our posterity. Lazarus paid no attention to that in her poem, which was focused only on the contemporary moment; Aldrich pointed out that the change she was inviting so thoughtlessly was liable to destroy much of what she took for granted.

    She can shriek all she wants, that’s my point. The wolf was still let in. I’ve thought it through very fully. The fact that you admit it was as well shows that you’re beginning to do likewise.

    Concert isn’t the word I’d use, although maybe that’s a case of the present needing to justify its own past.

    As it has always done. Part of the concert.

    You’re not making much of a point here. Would you prefer it if, mixed in with Saxons and Normans, the medieval British Isles also took in a few more waves of Turks, Gold Coast Africans, Arabs, and other jars of strange vintage?

    My preferences are irrelevant, though I doubt the Picts were crazy about the Celts, or the Celts the Saxons, or the Saxons the Normans, and yet they came, and in concert gave birth to that which we together love. Our species is remarkably adaptable, but prone to ruts if not intermittently stirred by new blood , whether in our beds or battlefields.

    You’re arguing something not in dispute (that immigration shapes the future), while sidestepping the crux, which is whether we’re making a future that we want for ourselves and our posterity.

    If it were not in dispute, you would not be attempting to arrest it once and for all. I’m saying that future requires both Lazarus and Aldrich having it out, with both having their victories and carrying out their vital functions, not necessarily at the same time – indeed history suggests it’s best if the two alternate. It is readily apparent that now is the time for the Aldriches to take the fore.

    Lazarus paid no attention to that in her poem, which was focused only on the contemporary moment; Aldrich pointed out that the change she was inviting so thoughtlessly was liable to destroy much of what she took for granted.

    Well, she did stipulate that we only take in those “yearning to be free,” not those, for instance, “yearning to impose sharia law,” so even in times when the spirit of Lazarus waxes great, it would be well not forget Aldrich. Likewise vice versa now as Aldrich gains the upper hand.

    Which is my point.
