I wrote in 2011 about documentarian Ken Burns’ curiously black-heavy quasi-history of the National Park System, America’s Best Idea:

Still, adrift inside the vast hulk of Baseball was an excellent two-hour documentary on the one topic that truly engaged Burns: the Negro Leagues and the Jackie Robinson story.

As more Burns documentaries piled up, it became clear that what he cares most about is telling stories about African Americans. This was acidly pointed out in the famous parody, The Old Negro Space Program:

It was a different time, you understand. In 1957 or 1958, if you were black and you were an astronaut, you were outta work.

In 2007, Latino pressure groups successfully exploited Burns’ notorious lack of interest in nonblacks by raising a stink over the shortage of Hispanics in his WWII documentary The War. He ended up caving in and inserting an extra 28 minutes of Latino Lore, that, in the words of a New Yorker reviewer, felt “tacked-on.”

In a better world, Burns could devote himself solely to making documentaries about African American subjects. There is plenty of good material, and he’s the best at it. But, in this world, he can’t: he’s white. It would be like a white actor in 2008 or 2009 being the world’s best at playing Othello: he’d be outta work. It is a different time, you understand.

(Indeed, Burns is about as white as a white guy can get. His general affect is reminiscent of the liberal social worker in the pilot episode of King of the Hill whom Hank dubs “Twig Boy.”)

From The Guardian:

Interview

Ken Burns: ‘We’re in perhaps the most difficult crisis in the history of America’

David Smith in Washington

In a new docuseries, the film-maker looks back to the Holocaust and US apathy to make links toward where we are right now

Ken Burns is driving in heavy traffic, trying to get from New York, where he was born, to New Hampshire, where he lives and works in bucolic splendour.

Burns, who was born in Brooklyn, lives in a small town in New Hampshire that is 96.0% non-Hispanic white.

He made the move in 1979, not to service a grand masterplan but out of financial desperation.

“I was making my first film and starving and rent was going up in New York City and I couldn’t afford it,” the documentarian recalls by phone.

Actually, rent was pretty low in Taxi Driver-esque New York in 1979, especially in Brooklyn (where he was born), which seems relevant considering Burns was then (or soon) working on his 1981 breakthrough documentary The Brooklyn Bridge.

But lots of people white-flighted out of 1970s New York City to very white northern New England. Jews, such as Bernie Sanders and Ben & Jerry, tended to go to Vermont. The WASPy Burns went to New Hampshire.

“I found the connection to nature incredibly important for this labour-intensive work that we do.”

But when Burns’s debut film, Brooklyn Bridge, was nominated for an Oscar, friends and colleagues assumed that he would move back to New York or try Los Angeles. He surprised them. “I made the biggest, the most important professional decision, which was to stay.

“I live in nature. I walk constantly and do a lot of letter writing and speechwriting and script writing and script fixing and editing in my head and that’s very helpful. And I happen to live in a particularly beautiful part of the country.”

Perhaps it is no accident that Burns settled in New Hampshire, a state that inspired Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, a quintessential play about the American experience. Something in the New England air has helped him produce epics on The Civil War, The War (about the second world war) and The Vietnam War; cultural studies of Baseball, Country Music, Jazz and The National Parks; profiles spanning The Roosevelts, Hemingway, Muhammad Ali and Benjamin Franklin.

Now comes The US and the Holocaust, a three-part PBS series directed and produced by Burns, Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein and written by Geoffrey Ward. Over six hours, it examines America’s flawed response to the Nazis’ persecution and mass murder of Jews, asking what could have been done differently to halt the genocide. Voice actors include Liam Neeson, Matthew Rhys, Paul Giamatti, Meryl Streep, Werner Herzog, Joe Morton and Hope Davis.

It may be Burns’s most didactic film yet as it ends provocatively with images of Dylann Roof, who shot and killed nine African American congregants at a church in South Carolina; white supremacists marching with flaming torches in Charlottesville, Virginia, chanting “Jews will not replace us!”; the killing of 11 worshippers at a synagogue in Pittsburgh; and the storming of the US Capitol by a mob of Donald Trump supporters on 6 January 2021.

That Burns chooses to live in a Norman Rockwell-style time capsule village probably helped him get in sync culturally with 19th Century Americans in his 1990 masterpiece, The Civil War.

On the other hand, these days, he wants his documentaries to be Relevant. But his comically complete detachment from the realities of life in 21st Century American tends to undermine the actual relevance of his increasingly strident political opinions about a modern America troubled by massive immigration and growing black crime.

In his 96% Diversity Free white flight bubble, Ken doesn’t have to worry much about the consequences of his political grandstanding.

But other Americans aren’t that privileged.

To be fair to Ken I thought his Country music documentary series was pretty excellent and of course most of the subjects were white.

  2. What’s funny is that in the Woke Era, The Civil War is considered too right-wing to be shown. Burns actually allows Shelby Foote, with his heavy southern accent, to say positive things about Nathan Bedford Forrest, who was later in THE KU KLUX KLAN. (Foote said the two geniuses of the war were Forrest and Abraham Lincoln.)

  3. Thomas says:

Last week, Burns was literally calling 50 illegals in Martha’s Vineyard for 44 hours anudda shoah. Comically complete detachment indeed.

  4. The fact that he lives in New Hampshire and not Vermont is surprising. Vermont is where lefty transplants from cities live, pretending they’re all true country folk while bringing their poisonous marxist nonsense with them. New Hampshire is the libertarian hillbillies, “get off my lawn and leave me alone” crowd, except in certain bedroom communities that commute to Boston.

  5. Barnard says:

“I was making my first film and starving and rent was going up in New York City and I couldn’t afford it,” the documentarian recalls by phone. “I found the connection to nature incredibly important for this labour-intensive work that we do.”

I’m sure Camden, New Jersey had lots of very affordable housing at that time. The connection to nature might have been lacking though.

  7. Six hours. Geez. I wonder what his “analysis” found. What could we have done differently? Even if The Holocaust ™ was a “thing” back then, and even if Jews were as fully in control back then, what exactly would you do differently?

Tell Hitler he can ship them out to Palestine, no questions asked?

Divert *even more* war materials from the Pacific to Europe?

I can’t even imagine. The generals and the government were doing their best as it was. I like the suggestion that I’ve heard from many people over the years, that we should have “bombed the railway into the concentration camps.” There are many reasons why that’s a terrible idea, from the inaccuracy of bombers, to the easy repairability of rail, to the fact that prisoners can be forced to march, to the opportunity cost of not bombing valuable targets, etc. But I’ll bet that dumb idea is in the movie.

We are in for certain the most avoidable and deliberate crisis in the history of America. None of this needs to be happening. There are no powerful natural forces leading to this point. The basic enforcement of existing law would have saved our border, our elections, our cities, and our foreign policy, and the laws had to be quietly suspended in every case to ram through the agenda.

    “Country Music documentary series”

I noticed that Charley Pride seemed almost ubiquitous in the series. I still remember Kris Kristoffersen’s description of Country music in one of the later episodes: “This is our folk music.” And by “our” I got the gist that Kris meant whitey. I’m surprised elfin Ken didn’t catch the gist that I caught.

It’s something of a tragedy that many of our prominent and talented fellow Americans are so unsure of themselves they need to distance themselves from the Americans who made their success possible.

To delegitimize the very real concerns of many White Americans as only xenophobia or only racism does a real disservice to those White Americans and, in my opinion, to America itself. They’re fearing for their livelihoods and the personal safety of themselves and their families.

  13. Someone needs to explain to Burns that there wasn’t a lot to do to prevent the Holocaust. The actual Holocaust didn’t happen until 1942, after we were at war with Germany.
“Bomb the camps” wouldn’t have worked, since 1. the actual extermination camps were shut down at the end of 1943, and 2. the accuracy of US bombing was so bad we literally would have killed more people than we saved.

  14. Batman says:

So thanks. Now, do Jon Meacham.

I call Meacham “The Sad Anteater”, which is what he looks like.

In October, 2020, after the first Presidential debate, Meacham said this on MSNBC (copied from The Hill):

Presidential historian Jon Meacham referred to President Trump’s supporters as “anguished, nervous” white men with a “lizard brain” during post-debate coverage of the second and final showdown between President Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden on Thursday night.

“I think Trump did himself good with his base tonight. The question for America is how big that base is,” Meacham said before later adding, “There is a lizard brain in this country. Donald Trump is a product of the white man’s, the anguished, nervous white guy’s lizard brain.”

He implied that “nervous white guys” were afraid of being around blacks, hence White “racism.”

So where does the Sad Anteater live?

Meacham resides in Belle Meade, Tennessee, according to Wikipedia. That’s one of, if not the, richest suburbs in Nashville.

The 2010 census demographics were 98.2% White and 0.2% black (that’s 2/10th of one percent.)

In 2020, it was 95.07% White and 0.21 black. Woo-hoo! Eyes on the Prize, baby!

Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) was founded at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor; the first teach-in against the Vietnam War was organized there. 61. Altai says:

I keep seeing this narrative, even showing up as an aside in Family Guy. Since when has total war been nothing? Since when has becoming the promised land of endless riches for European Jewry been nothing?

All the major powers save Japan and Italy went to war to total war with Germany and bombed it’s cities to ashes. The gall of then trying to condemn them for, when you really think about, actually being guilty for the holocaust is deranged.

Burns is simply a man who feels guilty about the treatment of natives and blacks but is too wrapped up in the conditioning of the day to channel that guilt into anything that is really very pro-black like immigration restriction, not noting that since the 19th century mass immigration has cut blacks off at the knees even worse than whites and hardly makes the lives or ethnic dispossession of Native Americans better. And so he also assumes and desperately tries to find a way to make the holocaust the fault of one of the major powers who defeated Germany and gave the greatest home and riches to European Jewry after. Not to mention slavish devotion and support for Israel once that demographic matured and marched through it’s institutions and media.

It is the most avoidable and deliberate not just in America but in the history of the world.

Civilizations have died all the time, either overrun by outsiders or get sloppy and weak–lose dynamism–or suffer a leadership crisis/civil war.

But this is unprecedented. The US won the War. It went to the moon. Not exactly lacking dynamism. Even as the rot was growing won the Cold War. It has the best technology in human history in a host of areas …
… but is being taken down by this toxic–and absolutely crazy–minoritarian ideology pushed by a tiny hostile minority and its fellow traveler of immigrationism, to just wave the invaders in.

No society in human history has ever–none–swallowed such an ideology of willful self-destruction. But America–and then following in its footsteps the rest of the West–has.

When PBS announced in 2017 that vaunted documentarian Ken Burns was hard at work on a four-part docuseries about Muhammad Ali, to debut in 2021, the news was greeted with much anticipation: one of the film world’s greats on the Greatest. The only hint of criticism came from some who thought Ali’s life was already well-trod territory. But four years later — in the wake of a racial reckoning in America that had the film industry, like so many others, reevaluating its commitment to diversity — the docu community had become considerably less welcoming of the project. With public chatter about a lack of representation and opportunity for people of color reaching a peak, a coalition of 140 documentary filmmakers sent an open letter to PBS in March 2021, slamming the choice of Burns to helm what was being positioned as the definitive doc on Ali.

Meir Kahane used to comment that the things that keep “Judaism”, or at least a pale form of it, going among most American Jews are nostalgia (bagels, etc.) and anti-Semitism, real or perceived. So American Jews *love* it when attention is paid to the Holocaust. (Also loving it are the Woke, who, as it is frequently said, love themselves some dead Jews, but are less than thrilled about the living, identified kind.) That’s how we get the rather bizarre situation of a government-funded Holocaust *museum* on the *National Mall*. (Why?)

Want to hear the reaction of some Jews whose Judaism has a bit more going for it? Many years back I was watching the Oscars with fellow students at Yeshiva University. (The place currently under a concerted Woke attack.) The Simon Wiesenthal Center of LA (you don’t even want to know what that place really is) had made yet another Holocaust movie which, of course, won an Oscar. (As Spike Lee once said, you see you’re up a Holocaust movie, you know you’re not winning.) The center of the Center, big black yarmulke on his head, got up to accept and gave some over-the-top speech, and all of us Yeshiva students looked at each other and went, “Yuck.”

So, yeah, Ken Burns is taking a turn. But here’s the irony: The whole thing, from the perspective of truth, is not only not a positive and something of a negative, it’s actually *counterproductive.* How so? Well, I’ll tell you: Jews have always had this feeling about American inaction during the Holocaust. But it’s not about America per se, or about ordinary Americans, or anything like that. After all, it was ordinary Americans, those doing the fighting, that *liberated* the camps. No, Jews- the ones who know- have always been bitter toward the guy at the top, liberal hero FDR, and some State Department types.

Well, guess who both the Holocaust Museum and Burns, in dealing with this issue, do a full-court press to defend? Yup, FDR. A US-government funded institution is not going to criticize the government, and a leftist like Burns is not going to attack FDR. So the Jews got their documentary, and it’s worth less than nothing. Instead, they get what they (liberal Jews and Burns alike) really want, an attack on ordinary Americans, then and (bizarrely) not, on Trump, on DeSantis. Isn’t that lovely?

Take it from me, most actual Jews out there would be perfectly happy if the American government and popular culture just shut up about the Holocaust.

Blondie’s “Rapture” was released when rap already existed.

Singer Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein were friends with Brooklyn- and Bronx-based hip-hop artists such as Fab 5 Freddy Brathwaite in the late 1970s. Freddy took Debbie and Chris to a rap event in the Bronx one night in 1978, and they were both impressed by the skill and excitement as MCs rhymed lyrics over the beats of spinning records and people lined up for a chance to take the microphone and freestyle rap. Debbie and Chris went to a few more such events, before deciding to write a rap song of their own in late 1979. They decided to combine what they had seen and heard in the Bronx with Chic-inspired disco music.

And rap was IMHO a spinoff from “toasting” or “Deejaying”, which had been part of Jamaican reggae since 1970-odd and itself was inspired by the calypsonians of the 50s and 60s.

It’s true though that Dylan and Cash did the “talking blues” style well.

That brings to an end a 4-year ordeal since the night of the brawl on June 12, 2018, which raised ethnic tensions in the city on the Androscoggin River.

The brawl was the cumulination of ill will simmering between a group of white men and Black teens. The group of 15 men, including 38-year-old Donald Giusti, were congregated in Kennedy Park, while the 30 teens were gathered on Knox Street.

On that night, a car passing by the groups fired a BB gun at Giusti and the other men in the park, which Giusti believed the teens fired, according to the Sun Journal.

The men crossed over to the teens to confront them, and a fight broke out that has been described as a “battle royal.” One of the men struck Nkuruziza and his cousin with a barbell. In response, Nkuruziza threw a nearby rock, which struck Giusti in the head, leaving him with a fatal injury, the newspaper reported.

    Giusti died three days later.

Thursday’s sentencing came two days after Nkuruziza pleaded no contest to criminally negligent manslaughter as part of a plea bargain that saw prosecutors drop aggravated assault and simple assault charges against him and the element of recklessness from the remaining charge, the Sun Journal reported.

That means Nkuruziza will likely avoid deportation to Rwanda, according to the newspaper.

    https://www.sunjournal.com/2019/09/16/transient-admits-to-assault-in-kennedy-park-melee/

According to witness accounts, as many as 30 Somali and Congolese people clashed with roughly 15 white people at Knox and Spruce streets on the night of June 12. Police arrived at the scene at about 10:45 p.m., while the fight was in progress.

Giusti was found by police lying on Knox Street, blood seeping from his head. He died three days later at a Lewiston hospital from blunt force trauma to his head.

Musafiri, who has pleaded not guilty to the charge, has been free on \$500 cash bail since shortly after his arrest. His case is scheduled for trial in October.

Two minors, who were 13 and 17 years old at the time of the incident, have also been charged in the case. The older boy, Emmanuel Nkurunziza, now 18, faces a manslaughter charge for allegedly throwing a rock that dealt Giusti a fatal blow when it hit him in the head.

  124. Burns’ much hailed civil war documentary was flawed in the eyes of many students of the conflict, including myself and fellow antiquarians of my acquaintance in New England. We were also repeatedly vexed by seeing familiar photos and engravings incorrectly captioned. Perhaps it’s a small thing that a tintype from 1872 is represented as a Civil War image, but it suggests a disrespect for the rules of historiography that one would not expect from a renowned documentarian.

PBS did a much better, five-part Civil War series in the Eighties, called “The Divided Union.” It hasn’t been released on DVD but may be viewed on Youtube.

Burns’ narrative, while repeating the conventional account of the role of slavery at the start, soon fell into an all-too familiar pattern of civil war reminiscence, the personal stories of brave soldiers fighting for their respective causes. The story devolved into repeating the comforting legend that the war was a family conflict among white men over “different visions of liberty”, reflecting an unfortunate reverence for the mythic Lost Cause narrative. And the widespread popular resistance to the war and its draconian suppression in both regions are simply ignored by Burns.

In any case, an aggressive, expansionist foreign power at its southern border and in control of the Mississippi River would have been an existential threat to the survival of the United States. The war would go on to its inevitable conclusion, no matter how great the cost, regardless of anyone’s personal feelings about slavery.

Recall the Civil War doc, he used photographs. All of them were so old as to be in the public domain. With this latest “White America Caused the Holocaust” one, same thing.Plus, with the internet, not like he’s at the 42nd Street library working the microfiche and Dewey decimal system.

Suspect though his rock n roll and country music ones were trickier, because artists aren’t real keen and giving away their rights for nothing. Had a lot of talking from people who were peripheral rather than stars. Were some artists featured and others given short shrift based on access to their music and videos? In the rock n roll one, you would think the Beastie Boys, a fun but really novelty act, were the greatest band ever.Clapton, The Clash and the Who were barely in it. For example, Pete Townsend until recently was reticent to allow people to use his music, but had a major change of heart when “CSI” backed up the Brinks truck.

In both the music docs, insists on this whole black and white coming together. Not sure that’s ever been true excpet on the margins. As others have said, the racial groups have different tastes in music. There are commonalities. But when you hear some rock guys like Clapton wax poetic about “the blues”, yes, it was a starting place. Perhaps they’re being kind to their influences to get them exposure and \$. But it wasn’t all that great. It’s moslty redundant, some things over and over. And the rock guitarists did so much more. Even in the commonalities, odd things, like white kids always liking Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley much more than American blacks did.

Maine reaches half a degree farther south than Minnesota does, while the latter stretches a degree-and-a-half farther north. Lewiston is at the same latitude as Rochester, which is pretty far south to Minnesotans.

Yes I know the big brained Unz commentariat thinks the South should have won, but all that would have done is enrich the Rothschild banks.

I’ll throw in my “small brained” two cents: I’ve come around to “never been fought”.

The South offered nothing–nothing–in terms of how one organizes a society. Slavery an appalling dead end that was already played out. And all the South would have been is a backward agricultural economic colony of Britain. That would have had to have been a more and more of a police state to keep blacks from fleeing.

But … self-determination. It’s bad–much less evil, but similar in thrust to slavery–to have to force people into political community with you. If they want to go, they should go.

My guess is the South would have boomeranged back into the Union as industry and America marched on and it became more and more obvious that slavery was a backwater. (Tenant farming could replace it, without the overhead, much later mechanization.) Of course, it is not clear that the United States should want join with a place with that South’s demographics. But, in any case, the politics–the bedrock assumption that people are free to associate or not as they see fit–would have been better. Perhaps we would not be where we are–in need of another separation?

Easy to mock Burns’ tedious “good whiteness” and “diversity” pandering while living in his whitetopia–typical of the breed, whether “bucolic” or not.

And easy to mock his taking time out from blackety, black to bend a knee to Jews with yet another Holocaust documentary.

But this continual blood libeling of ordinary Americans–i.e. the vast heap of white gentiles whose ancestors built the American nation, so many others have determined is actually pretty darn nice to plop down in and feast on.

This blood libeling is really, really nasty noxious stuff. And it has spread from Jews to become an ideology of lots of “good white” fellow travelers, so suffuses the culture that it’s been righteously internalized by blacks as self-justification for anything and picked up all immigrant grifters.

Most “documentaries” expose the biases of their authors.
    Ken Burns is no exception.
Ken Burns “schlockumentaries” rank along with Michael Moore’s “schlockumentaries” in their one-sided biased presentations.
Ken Burn’s “documentary” on the Vietnam war continually praised the North Vietnamese communists while denigrating the efforts of the South Vietnamese and American troops, purposely failing to note that the Vietnam war was a result of an invasion by the north, not a “civil-war”.
Many North Vietnamese “voted with their feet” after partition in 1954 as they did not want to live under a communist government. Burns conveniently left that out of his documentary.
He parroted the falsehood that the communist takeover was peaceful and that “re-education” camps for former South Vietnamese officials would last 6 months. He was wrong, as former South Vietnamese officials were imprisoned in “re-education” camps for as long as twenty years.
Michael Moore did the same thing with his documentary on General Motors with “Roger and Me”.
In fact, GMs Roger Smith offered Moore an interview but was rebuffed because any interview would have destroyed the whole false premise of the film.
Moore did the same thing with his “schlockumentary” on health care, praising Cuba for having “universal health care”. What he failed to state was that “excellent health care” was only available to communist party officials and the “connected”, not the ordinary Cuban citizen. Ordinary Cuban citizens have to bring their own bed linens, pay for drugs, cannot get advanced treatments and receive a much lower level of health care than communist party officials or those who are “connected”.
All documentaries must be treated with a grain of salt.

  199. But lots of people white-flighted out of 1970s New York City to very white northern New England. Jews, such as Bernie Sanders and Ben & Jerry, tended to go to Vermont. The WASPy Burns went to New Hampshire.

    I say:

Bernie Sanders likes the Anglo-Celts in Vermont more than he likes the Blacks in New York City.

Bernie Sanders came from Brooklyn and went to the University of Chicago.

In 1968, Bernie Sanders moved to Vermont to get away from Brooklyn and New York City and the Blacks.

Bernie Sanders is a Jew who hypocritically says how much he loves Blacks, but Bernie from Brooklyn Sanders don’t want to live around them.

Jew Democrat Bernie Sanders also screams all day long about the Scandinavians and their welfare state model, but it only works when it’s mostly Scandinavians living in those nations. Many Scandinavian nations have evil ruling classes that are flooding their nations with foreigners, just like the evil ruling class in the USA is flooding the foreigners into America.

Bernie Sanders doesn’t want to live anywhere near Blacks or the Black Lives Matter mob.

Bernie Sanders is also a supporter of the Second Amendment because the European Christians in Vermont love their guns and so do the European Christians in New Hampshire.

Hillary Clinton, Bernie’s competitor for the 2016 Democrat Party presidential primary nomination, lives in the mostly White town of Chappaqua, New York. Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders don’t want to live anywhere near Black people.

Bernie Sanders is a Sidney Lumet Aardvark Talking Jew who got the phuck out of New York City when the Lumet type meltdown in New York City was getting extra crispy crazy man. Vermont is lovely, dark green and deep — in the summer — and you must go miles towards the population centers to see Blacks or non-Whites that go beep beep beep.

If I seem cross with Brooklyn Vermont Bernie Sanders, it’s only because he broke the hearts of American Patriots who want a complete and total halt to all legal immigration and the deportation of all illegal alien invaders.

Bernie Sanders was our Sam Gompers Trade Unionist Immigration Restrictionist Jew Hero until he cruelly broke our hearts!

One minute we were cheering on our Bernie like he just hit a 500 foot home run to dead center field in the old Ebbetts Field after Bernie Sanders said that open borders mass immigration was a Koch Brothers proposal, and then Bernie changed his mind to grab for the immigrant vote by walking back his sensible comments about the harmful effects of mass immigration on workers and workers’ wages and bargaining power and other matters.

Bernie Sanders was made extra crispy cranky by some nutcake Jew named Ezra Klein who pushed open borders mass immigration and old dog Bernie Sanders had to put this damn puppy puke Klein in his place.

Bernie Sanders was Sam Gompers in the flesh as he rhetorically bashed the open borders talk of the young Jew boob named Klein, and we all loved it.

Disagree. I’ve seen an analysis of Gloria Vanderbilt’s will by an estate practitioner. It was his opinion that the options she selected indicate that she had not distributed her property to her heirs before her death. She seems to have been profligate. She was estranged from one of her surviving children for nearly 40 years and he received nothing (and likely wanted nothing). Her normal son was left her real estate and (if I’m not mistaken) her chattels, including her art collection. Her cash and securities went to Anderson Cooper. By what accounts have appeared in the media, these were valued at \$1.5 million. Cooper’s wealthy because he’s paid handsome sums by CNN; what he received from his mother is a maraschino on top. His brother, 69 at the time of his mother’s death, has a wife, children, and a small business he runs. The estranged son, a 67 year old bachelor at the time of his mother’s death, has lived in New England under an assumed name for 40+ years, doing whatever.

Wokeness is a psychological tendency to be against The Man.

The Irish and the Scots both have a tendency to be woke, because they felt oppressed by the English for so long. Their descendants in the US are more left-wing than those descendants of the plain old English. Just to give you a comparison, look at the Boston Irish versus the Mormons. The Boston Irish were Democratic mainstays, but a lot of old Mormon stock were recruited among the English, and they are still more conservative today.

Likewise, the New England descendants of the Puritans felt oppressed by the Crown in the 1600s, and they passed on their tendancy to be against The Man, which is why their descendants so eagerly joined the American Revolution in the 1700s.

Wokeness tends to persist among peoples who felt they were oppressed in the past, and their descendants tend to hang on to the same belief system, sometimes even when it serves no useful purpose.

Frankly, I think of wokeness as simply a version of Oppositional Defiant Personality Disorder, and that human beings are prone to it as a method of hiving off one hunter-gatherer tribe from another, something that would prevent the overharvesting of local food resources in prehistoric times, which might have starved tribal peoples to death.

I think the simplest conclusion to draw from polling is that the welfare of Israel is not a strong vector in motivating Jewish voters. If the Democrats nominated a Jeremy Corbyn type, it might be motivation, but as long as a certain baseline in nonaggression is established, Jewish voters will not be observably influenced by the issue. Jimmy Carter may have lost some Jewish voters over his frictional dealings with the Israeli governments of the day, but the dimensions of that are uncertain because Carter is also a Southern evangelical, a cultural segment to which a large minority of Jews are antagonistic a priori. Same deal in re George Bush the Elder, bar that the center of gravity in the Jewish electorate was to be found in older cohorts who disliked bluebloods. The U.S. nuclear weapons were intended for use against Germany.
The argument for building one was that the Nazis might build one, so we should do so, and get it done before the enemy. Never mind that the Third Reich did not have the capability to deliver such a “device ” to the U.S., although the U.K. was definitely within range of the Luftwaffe.

But from about 1943, the U.S. knew (assuming that Heisenberg was to be believed), that Germany did not have a nuclear weapons program, because Heisenberg made a special trip to Copenhagen to inform his friend and colleague Niels Bohr of that fact. If Bohr knew, then Oppenheimer knew, and if Oppenheimer knew, then General Groves knew.

Moreover, the facilities required for isotopic separation were enormous, and would have shown up on aerial photographs, assuming they were not built underground. Such facilities, if detected, would have been prime targets for Allied bombing raids. None such were found.

Most people regard the Battle of Stalingrad as a major turning point in the War. The days of the Third German Reich were numbered, and the number was not large, as such events are generally reckoned.

So, the “race to build the bomb” was not to “beat the Germans to having nuclear weapons,” but to have nuclear weapons to use on the Germans, that is to say, to obliterate German cities and kill German civilians, before the Wehrmacht surrendered. In that sense, the Manhattan Project was a failure, because Germany surrendered on 8 May 1945, whereas the Trinity test did not take place until 16 July 1945.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were “real world” weapons tests, with the (“subhuman”) Japanese population as test subjects. So it goes…

I wasn’t writing about the clothing fortune Gloria made herself. .

Read my post. My first point was that her father and siblings depleted the original enormous fortune. So she and her cousins didn’t inherit huge fortunes. Because that money was gone. My second point was that Gloria made her own fortune.

There are several books about the Vanderbilt family and fortune. The fortune dwindled because eventually the heirs were neither entrepreneurs nor content to live very luxurious lives. They spent too much. Especially Reggie her father.

Per contemporary newspaper accounts, the value of her holdings in 1945 was \$4.5 million. Applying the GDP deflator, that amounts to \$52 million in 2019 currency. The value of her cash and securities was about \$1.5 million in 2019. Her condo on the Upper East Side was sold in 2021; the asking price was \$1.12 million. Her personal property likely fetched good coin. Still, a passable guess is that the real value of her holdings was at her death 1/10 th of what it had been in 1945.

If you want to make the point that she started out as someone who would have been top o’ the social register in Dayton rather than New York, that’s a decent point.

It’s pretty good, especially if you’re a “Godfather” fan. Watched it in part because a friend is involved; happens to be Irish/Italian, and is understandably pleased with much of his contributions.

Jewish producer Bob Evans did not want Al Pacino as Michael, and ultimately a compromise was reached that gave Jewish James Caan the role of Sonny. Not subtle that Coppola wanted Italian-Americans cast as much as possible to play Italian-Americans. Probably would not fly in a Hollywood that casts black girls as Ann Boylen.

Jack Nicholson was almost cast as Michael Corleone, which wasn’t entirely crazy. He was raised in NJ and born out of wedlock. His father was Italian and his mom Irish. But his family hid his true parentage from him for years telling him his grandma was his mom and his biological mom was his sister. Heard him say he was very grateful that those tough old Irish ladies chose not to abort him.

Robert Redford, Ryan O’Neal and Burt Reynolds; that all would have sucked.

Tracking shot of Evans(played by a Brit) walking into a Hollywood pool party with Ali McGraw to the Rolling Stones” “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking?” is a highlight.

The American civil war, jazz music, country music, baseball, national parks, Leonardo DaVinci, etc., etc…when someone makes documentaries on topics as disparate as these, you know the content is going to be pretty shallow. Could you imagine an author or historian writing books on such a wide variety of subjects and still having credibility? Know-it-alls who make documentaries aren’t much better than know-it-alls anywhere else. IMO, Burns is the Cliff Clavin of filmmakers, and his films are symbolic of the dumbing down of America. He’s less interested in educating the masses than blessing them with his political opinions.

The Civil war documentary series you mention was very good, however, in part because Burns made an effort to be apolitical. He interviewed Foote, but also allowed a couple of rather afro-centric black academics to give their neo-abolitionist take on the conflict. It’s my impression, however, that most viewers were tired of Burns’ tedious and monotonous presentation style (with Ashokan Farewell droning incessantly in the background) by the time the series was over. His political instinct eventually won out when he advocated for removing Confederate statues a few years ago, though.

Jews are rarely mentioned unless it’s as a model for how to deal with white people. And the politics runs the gamut from, hey, aren’t these white yelp reviewers annoying to –> we have to support pan-Asianism led by China to takeover and conquer the West. And again, these are English-speaking Asians in Europe and the US. For the record, the only people I don’t like are people who don’t like me or wish to do me harm.

Goode is a terrific actor. He might be the best actor working in film right now. Certainly among the best. He mostly plays (very well) posh Brits–in everything from Woody Allen’s Match Point to Downton Abbey. But if you want to see a definition of the term “range”:

There’s a nifty little American film called The Lookout, from 2007. Goode plays an scummy yet charismatic American Midwestern criminal, a small-time hood looking for a big score. He’s sensational. Highly recommended.

  267. Burn’s documentary goes into much detail about the number of Jews killed in detention camps but he completely ignores how many were killed by Allied bombing of Germany’s war industry plants. It never made sense to me that Germany would kill their only source of labor for these camps. But it does make sense that Allied bombs were not selective when dropped on the German plants staffed with Jews. Germany was fighting a war on at least three fronts. They were so low on manpower they were recruiting teenagers to fight on the front lines. Germany needed living Jews as labor for their war industries.

Armaments factories were mostly staffed with Polish and Soviet POWs/gastarbeiter. No need to put Jews to work when you could round up the women from a Polish village and ship them back to Essen or Mannheim. Some Jews were employed in skilled or specialist positions but not working on production lines, as a rule. I have even met a Polish woman who enjoyed her stay in the 3rd Reich – she was brought to Germany to work as a nanny for some industrialist, she had never seen that kind of luxury growing up in the Polish countryside.

They should still be rotting in jail

Inmates age at the same rate as people not incarcerates, for types like the Five prison prolly preserved them.

Didion: “Character — the willingness to accept responsibility for one’s own life — is the source from which self-respect springs”.

They should not have claimed compensation because they committed vicious beating downs of men, and deserved serious prison time. Moreover, by doing that they brought their wrongful convictions of the rape and attempted murder charge on themselves

Didion, who lived just outside Central Park, and knew it very well from her daily walks in it. the witnesses to the trail of brutal beatings of men (women were not touched) across the park and the timings of them were shown by Didion in her article to bespeak innocence of the attempted murder and rape of the woman victim, because she was attacked in a remote area of the park (women interviewed on the news wondered why on earth she’d have jogged there especially in the evening) too far away from any of the gang beating sof men locations for them to be where the rape happened in the time before they left the park. This was not a Travelling Salesman Problem, the time just was not there for them to have done it

Other indication the Five bhad nothing to do with the attempted murder and rape are she was knocked uncoscious and dragged off of the the rape victim was trussed up with her t-shirt, which would hardly be necessary for a gang, but a lone Reyles had used the same method in the park to rape an isolated woman on a different occasion.

Also a hospital scan of the victim showed a large amount of semen in her, but nothing like what would be expected from multiple rapists, certainly not between 5 to 30. Her clothing and body would have had different semen on it but there was only Reyles’s on it. He committed similar crimes by himself inland around the park both before and after including a murder. He was significantly older that anyone in the pack of youths the Five were from.

There’s a reason why none of the cops and prosecutors originally involved have changed their minds, nor has Donald Trump, nor did/has former mayors Koch, Giuliani, or Bloomberg.

They lack Didion’s ‘character’. And they have watched too many ‘Northerns ‘

A Western {my link} takes place in “a world in which there is no law and order, and a man shows up and imposes, personally, law and order on the territory, the community.” An Eastern is “a story where there is law and order, so there are institutions of justice, but they have been subverted by people from within.” In a Northern, “law and order exists, and law and order is morally righteous, the system works.” (A prime example is, of course, Law and Order.)

Burns writes ‘Southerns’ (2A Southern is “where the entire apparatus is corrupt, and where the reformer is not an insider but an outsider).

    My two cents again:

I’m older, and I’ve lived a lot of life–including an impressive array of, in the words of Hannibal Lecter “sexual scenarios”, but I never was involved in a gang rape-not as a perpetrator, a victim, or a bystander/witness.

So I can’t speak to that situation-much less imagine what five or more low IQ adolescent negroes, hopped up on adrenaline (and drugs, no doubt) might do. I’m guessing it wasn’t a leisurely affair, preceded by cuddling and foreplay. If only one or two actually committed penetrative rape, it probably was a hurried couple of strokes-just to say they did it, similar to Indians counting coup. No DNA evidence of non-ejaculatory sex could have been discovered, especially after Reyes did his thing later. Two of the five had semen on the inside of their underwear, suggesting dry humping with their shorts on. Maybe there was no penetrative sex by the five. Call it sexual assault and attempted murder instead. The “youths” called it “rape” when interrogated. I doubt there were any stellar legal mind who knew the legal definition.

None admitted to rape, but all five said that others in the group did, including others who were never charged at all..

    Armstrong report again:

Our examination of the facts leads us to suggest that there is an alternative theory of
the attack upon the jogger – that both the defendants and Reyes assaulted her, perhaps
    successively.

It may have been, as a former inmate-acquaintance claimed Reyes told him, that the
attack on the jogger was already in progress when Reyes joined, attracted to the scene
by the jogger’s screams. Or, he may have been following her and held back,
temporarily, when the defendants intercepted her. Or, the defendants may have
abandoned the jogger after mauling her in the hit-and-run style typical of their rampage
that night. Coming upon her just after the attack, Reyes could have perpetrated a new
attack, but in a much more brutal fashion.

In any of these scenarios, it would have been likely that Reyes, not the defendants, was
guilty of the more vicious outrages inflicted upon the jogger. The bloody and sustained
beating, the tying of the jogger’s hands in front of her face, and the rape itself (which
apparently was anal as well as vaginal) were more characteristic of Reyes than of the
behavior exhibited by the defendants and their friends during their rampage.
Under any such theory, the defendants’ lesser role is consistent with their confessions.
In describing what they knew of the incident, they may have considered that an assault
with sexual aspects to it constituted “rape,” without being aware that a brutal rape, in the
full sense of the term, took place after they had left.

If Reyes and the defendants both attacked the jogger at overlapping or different times,
the only aspect of Reyes’s account that is necessarily at odds with the statements of the
defendants is the one for which there is no corroboration – that he came upon her
    alone
