Jussie Smollett’s concert at L.A.’s Troubadour still on after attack

The “Empire” star and musician was the victim of a possible hate crime in Chicago on Tuesday, but he is still scheduled to perform solo at the Troubadour, the fabled West Hollywood venue, according to the concert booker, Sean Healy Presents.
… Smollett has not commented publicly on the attack, which has been condemned by many of his peers, politicians and fans, but a retweet of a Monday plug for the Troubadour show was among his latest social-media posts.
As of Tuesday afternoon, tickets (starting at $20) were still available for Saturday’s show.
$20 is cheap to see a Hate Crime Victim at a legendary nightclub! (And the service charge is only $5.55, which is less than I expected.)
Best known for his work on Fox’s musical drama “Empire,” which he stars in and writes music for, the actor has been a musician for much of his career. “F.U.W.,” a 2017 single, was his critique of the Trump administration and its policies.

To the extent that he was recognized, it would have been at the Subway, I’d think, and the perps would be on that tape. On the other hand, masks and bleach are not in most people’s everyday carry. But come on, would haters be stalking the guy? How would they know he would be on that street?
This bodes badly for him if he’s faking it. “Hate crime specialists” are going to see through bullshit, and they will check his story and the available surveillance video 360 degrees before calling him in for another chat, which could be polite but brutal. There was a character on the HBO show Six Feet Under years ago who was an art professor or something like that, and one of his phrases that stuck with me when he was criticizing someone’s work was calling it “elephant art.” It was just so so obvious, in your face and without nuance that it was impossible to take it seriously.

According to police radio traffic, a dispatcher asked officers to check on a battery report from a caller in an apartment in the 300 block of East North Water Street just after 2:30 a.m. A friend of the actor told responding officers that “a noose was placed over the friend’s neck.” Police said Smollett took himself to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and is said to be in “good condition.”

It seems like many of these hate crimes that turn out to be fake could be considered a form of “elephant art” in themselves (though I suppose perhaps it’s too premature to say in this case, it just seems far too like previous frauds). It’s always nooses or swastikas. Like the most cartoonish and obvious depiction of racism they could imagine. It’s like if someone described being attacked by a terrorist and gave instructions to the sketch artist to draw Blofeld or Dr. Evil.
I presume the police are generally skeptical when presented with the sort of crimes they have never seen in real life before.

Heard this story on the radio yesterday. There was no mention of witnesses or video, which of course I immediately assumed was due to the fact that there weren’t any. Reading the news today, I see that I was correct.
I love to be able to check his credit card records, to see whether they were any recent purchases of rope. But then I realized that the stories never mentioned anyone actually seeing any rope…

More than a dozen police detectives, some specializing in hate crimes, are working the case.
The Associated Press reports that, according to the Chicago Police, the detectives have reviewed hundreds of hours of tape from surveillance cameras and have found no evidence of any assault on Smollett.

I’m always on the lookout for a cable TV series to get addicted to (eg Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones).
So I watched the 1st season of Empire. Boring…… Couldn’t get interested in it. Having seen the 1st season, I still couldn’t pick out of a crowd anyone who starred in this except Terrence Howard. And I doubt a roving gang of MAGA thugs could do so at 2am either.

Black famous? It didn’t air on BET. It was the #1 show on Fox. Maybe black people watch more network t.v. than whites nowadays, but whites are still aware of it. And I very much doubt their 10-15 million viewers are all black women, though that may be the target audience.
