From Bloomberg News:

Biden Says First Golf as President Leaves Course Record Intact
By Jennifer Epstein
April 17, 2021, 10:14 AM PDT

President has been ranked among best political golfers in past

Most recent handicap posted for Biden was 6.7 in 2018

… Biden was ranked one of Washington’s best golfers a few years ago, sporting a single-digit handicap, but took a break during his 2020 campaign for the White House. …

During the 1960 campaign, JFK made fun of Eisenhower for playing golf. But JFK was actually a golf fanatic, so when during the campaign he got an invitation to play superb Cypress Point, he canceled everything to play it and relied on the press to cover it up, which they did. That’s probably less feasible in an era of phone video and social media.

Many other presidents, from William Howard Taft to George W. Bush, have also golfed in office.

The extreme dominance of golf as the Sport of Presidents over the last 110 years is probably something of a small sample size fluke, But it also likely says something about the personalities of the type of likable alpha males who are most likely to become President.

In 2011, Golf Digest ranked Biden the 29th best golfer in Washington, with a 6 handicap. Biden had a 6.7 handicap in the U.S. Golf Association’s GHIN database in 2018, when his most recent scores were posted.

Egomaniacs can keep their handicaps low by not reporting their bad scores.

Biden was 75 years old in 2018.

Obama is 19 years younger but never got close to that handicap despite playing 333 times while in the White House. As far as I can tell, Obama was, in his High WASP manner, scrupulous about recording his scores, which was why he virtually always played a complete 9 or 18 hole round despite the press of business. Only 9 or 18 hole rounds traditionally counted for handicap purposes. Trump, in contrast, would often play 5 or 7 holes then knock off and do something else.

Biden’s claimed 6.7 handicap handicap in 2018 would suggest he might break 80 close to half the time at age 75, which would mean he’d sometimes Shoot His Age, which is an impressive accomplishment for any golfer. On the PGA Tour, 67-year-old Sam Snead, the greatest old golfer of all time, did it. I doubt that Biden has ever legitimately shot his age.

The joke is that nobody gets the joke that Joe Biden is the second most Trump-like man in politics.

I’d say zero chance Biden ever legit shot his age.

Youngest to ever shoot his age – 1944 PGA championship winner Bob Hamilton shot 59 at 59 years old in a tournament at his country country club.

Black guy Walter Morgan in 2002, at age 61, shot a 60 in the AT&T Canada Senior Open Championship. That seems a bit more impressive. Strange ima huge golf fan and never heard of this guy.

  2. Prosa123 says:

Warren Harding was a passionate golfer, so when he stopped playing after a few holes on a Canadian course it was apparent he was suffering from something worse than the official pronouncement of indigestion. In retrospect, it almost certainly was a heart attack, and he came close to being the only current or former president to die outside the US. He died about a week later in San Francisco

  3. “JFK made fun of Eisenhower for playing golf.”

During the mid. ’50’s while President, Ike took up golf in earnest after a couple of heart attacks on the advice of his doctor. So basically, JFK was mocking Ike’s health problems (as most DC insiders in the ’50’s were well aware of the reason why President Eisenhower took up golf, for health reasons primarily). Not a very classy move on JFK’s part, to mock another president’s health. You didn’t see Ike making any Grassy Knoll jokes post-’63. (example: “that’s the first time he ever went down on Jackie.”) But then, the more that comes out regarding JFK as a person, there’s very little likability about him. Like father, like son.

“That’s probably less feasible in an era of phone video and social media.”

Except if you’re cancelled, like Trump has been on Twitter. Also, the MSM has done a fairly decent job in keeping the public largely in the dark regarding the details about the “mostly peaceful” protests done by the likes of BLM and Antifa in particular. Wonder why the MSM feels a need to do that in the Current Year?

Noted with amusement and quoted for truth.

Everyone who’s even remotely white must run away from everything WASP or face ruin in public life. Even in private life nowadays.

People with real privilege can appropriate pretty much anything they like.

Obama is not 29 years younger. Check your math boomer

  6. Is there any footage of Biden swinging a golf club on the course? Pics or it didn’t happen.

    From the link:

While he was vice president, Biden occasionally played with Obama, including a 2011 round with two Republicans, then-House Speaker John Boehner and John Kasich, then the governor of Ohio.

Kasich turned the experience into a punchline during a speech at the 2012 Republican National Convention.

“Joe Biden told me that he’s a good golfer and I can tell you that’s not true, as well as all the other things that he says,” Kasich said.

He’s like Trump, in the sense that Biden is a lot of the things the lying press said Trump was.

  7. Abe says:

Below chestnut from a SIMPSONS episode my son and I watched recently. Of course since Joe Biden’s mental faculties have somehow freakishly advanced by leaps and bounds over the last 12 years instead of declining into terminal senility- TEEN VOGUE reports he may have gotten to break-even with this tabletop cold fusion project he’s been tinkering at in his toolshed- the trope that he is a vain, unpleasant, blustering buffoon no longer applies and there is absolutely nothing funny about him. Full stop.

Skinner: So the lesson is, children—
Michelle Obama: I’ll tell them what the lesson is.
    Chalmers: He’s our Joe Biden.
    Michelle Obama: Understood.

  8. Trump was elected as a thumb in the eye to established Washington politicians. Biden was elected as the anti-trump, not because he was the best available. Obama was elected to show blacks that they are liked and see what that got us. Did any of the women dems, that lost the fix-is-in primaries, play golf?

  9. @Buffalo Joe

Steve, thank you, but Condi Rica, sounds like a resort course in the Dominican Republic. And, not to quibble, but Rice was part of an administration, I don’t think she ever dipped her toe into a political run.

  11. @Yojimbo/Zatoichi

During the mid. ’50’s while President, Ike took up golf in earnest after a couple of heart attacks on the advice of his doctor.

Ike also cannily promoted his image as a golfer as part of his deliberate psyops ploy to keep America calm and project confidence and relaxation during his shockingly tumultuous terms. Ike was, after the all the, guy who won D-Day, so he knew a thing or two about morale and about psychological projection by leadership.

If not for Ike’s amazingly steady hand and deliberate image, we might remember that the 1950s were a radical time of war, U-2 spy capture, Soviets in space, mass rioting and marching during civil rights, Selma, the Korean conflict, mass communist spying, Nixon’s checkers scandal, and about a million other events.

Meanwhile hothead Kennedy and his tough talk nearly twice got us into nuclear war with the Ruskies (Cuban Missle, Berlin Air Lift) and got his head blown off by an angry commie who took his belligerency personally (Oswald).

  12. As far as I can tell, Obama was, in his High WASP manner, scrupulous about recording his scores, which was why he virtually always played a complete 9 or 18 hole round despite the press of business.

Or, as I’ve repeatedly pointed out, Obama played golf to the end of each round because he was a silly puppet front man whose underlings chosen by Citibank did the work for him while his job was to give speeches, sign statements, and then go have fun.

It’s the same reason he played tons of basketball games with NBA guys when he first got in, and why he knocked out of press conferences early to go party with celebrities: because that’s what front men do. They don’t do work.

Fun fact: Canada, at about 1/4, has the largest % of lefty golfers in the world. My theory is it’s a hockey thing- all four boys in my family, including me, are right handed, but three of us play hockey lefty. 2 of the lads play lax lefty as well. Many lefty hockey players in Canada play golf lefty, even though they are right handed otherwise. If we were Canucks at least one of us would be a lefty golfer.

And re: Steve’s comment on attractive daughters of trophy wives playing golf: I volunteered at the US Women’s Open at the Orchards in South Hadley, MA, in 2004. I was surprised at the general level of attractiveness among the players. (Granted, I live in the “ lesbians who look like the guy who resurfaces your driveway” capital of the world- HT to the Z Man on that descriptor. This was, I think at the height of the Swedish influence in the LPGA, which was a contributing factor. People are always much more respected when they preserve their privacy.

This has always been an issue for the Royal family in the UK, and this is why they were so upset about Meghan Markle’s father selling photographs to paparazzi. It just destroys the mystique.

The president is just an ordinary man holding an extraordinary office, a very ordinary man in many cases, and for that reason people have traditionally shown that office great respect.

Trump blew it. He should have stopped tweeting the minute he entered the White House, and only spoken in public when his announcements had been carefully crafted to eliminate obvious stupidity, which is what presidents have usually done.

By continuing to Twitter and by making a utter fool of himself at Covid-19 press conferences, he completely undermined the dignity of the office, a process that Bill Clinton had worked hard on (no pun intended) with revelations about blowjobs from fat girls in the oval office toilet.

Before this most Americans had no idea that the oval Office had a private bathroom where presidents could get blowjobs, because they never gave it a thought. Now it is hard to see the oval office without thinking about this kind of trivia.

Now Biden and his advisors have globbed onto the brilliantly simple idea that he can seem like a wise eminence grise just by simply keeping his mouth shut and staying out of view.

This way the public is not exposed to his fatuous personality and vacuous ramblings of the past and will soon forget about them.

They will be expecting him to cash in on his handy Ukraine connections behind the scenes and to make everything all right.

No, but Reverend Doctor Archangel Field Marshal Martin Luther King yucked it up about Kennedy after he was killed.

Watching a news rebroadcast of the funeral, the revered Christian man of the cloth/secular saint was recorded by FBI wiretaps implying that Jackie kneeling and kissing JFK’s coffin was an attempt at post mortem fellatio, to the laughter of his guests in the hotel room.

J Edgar Hoover dutifully relayed the remark to Bobby Kennedy (who had ordered the wiretaps, which were approved by JFK), who told Jackie–which is why Jackie was on record as being less than enamored of King.

He shot an 87. He’d never played a course that was remotely set up to pro standards.

  66. The joke is that nobody gets the joke that Joe Biden is the second most Trump-like man in politics.

    And that’s NOT a compliment.

Agreed, I’m Irish Catholic, and the Kennedy family is a disgusting pack of grifters. Some of the worst people ever to have put shoes on their feet.

“We’ll miss that bridge when we come to it.”

We ALL click on it, my friend.

Front men puppets usually are. W. was like that as well. I remember the “5pm quitting time” meme the W. folks pushed when he first got in, trying to make it seem like it was because his background was in business instead of his front man nature.

Contrast them with the Clintons. Yes, they are puppets, too, but they loved doing the work of their masters. As everyone has always said, few politicians seem to enjoy politicking as much as Bubba, and Hillary’s time at the State Dept’s was full up taking meetings with the people who bribed her.

With the Clintons, you get a lot of value for your dollar. But with Obama and W., you get a speech and some handshakes and pictures; you have to make sure he puts your underlings in his cabinet to do the actual work.
