Events at the American border, as well as in the Mediterranean, are reminiscent of French novelist Jean Raspail’s prophetic 1973 novel The Camp of the Saints. Raspail’s preface from the translation by Norman Shapiro:

THE CAMP OF THE SAINTS

By Jean Raspail

Translated by Norman Shapiro

Originally published in French as Le Camp Des Saints, 1973

And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison, and will go forth and deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, and will gather them together for the battle; the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went up over the breadth of the earth and encompassed the camp of the saints, and the beloved city. —APOCALYPSE 20

My spirit turns more and more toward the West, toward the old heritage. There are, perhaps, some treasures to retrieve among its ruins … I don’t know. —LAWRENCE DURRELL

As seen from the outside, the massive upheaval in Western society is approaching the limit beyond which it will become “meta-stable” and must collapse. — SOLZHENITSYN

I HAD WANTED TO WRITE a lengthy preface to explain my position and show that this is no wild-eyed dream; that even if the specific action, symbolic as it is, may seem farfetched, the fact remains that we are inevitably heading for something of the sort. We need only glance at the awesome population figures predicted for the year 2000, i.e., twenty-eight years from now: seven billion people, only nine hundred million of whom will be white.

But what good would it do?

I should at least point out, though, that many of the texts I have put into my characters’ mouths or pens — editorials, speeches, pastoral letters, laws, news stories, statements of every description — are, in fact, authentic. Perhaps the reader will spot them as they go by. In terms of the fictional situation I have presented, they become all the more revealing.

— J.R.

One

The old professor had a rather simple thought.

Given the wholly abnormal conditions, he had read, and reasoned, and even written too much — versed as he was in the workings of the mind — to dare propose anything, even to himself, but the most banal of reflections, worthy of a schoolboy’s theme. It was a lovely day, warm but not hot, with a cool spring breeze rolling gently and noiselessly over the covered terrace outside the house. His was one of the last houses up toward the crest of the hill, perched on the rocky slope like an outpost guarding the old brown-hued village that stood out above the landscape, towering over it all, as far as the tourist resort down below; as far as the sumptuous boulevard along the water, with its green palms, tips barely visible, and its fine white homes; as far as the sea itself, calm and blue, the rich man’s sea, now suddenly stripped of all the opulent veneer that usually overspread its surface — the chrome-covered yachts, the muscle-bulging skiers, the gold-skinned girls, the fat bellies lining the decks of sailboats, large but discreet — and now, stretching over that empty sea, aground some fifty yards out, the incredible fleet from the other side of the globe, the rusty, creaking fleet that the old professor had been eyeing since morning.

The Camp of the Saints remains in print.

  1. The Camp of the Saints has become too obvious of a comparison to ignore, so it has entered the vocabulary of the internets lately. On the one hand, it’s obvious . On the other… you’re not supposed to notice that, racist!

“Meanwhile, Nigeria’s population is expected to surpass that of the United States before 2050.

Europe’s population is projected to decline by 14 per cent, the report states, and Mr. Wilmoth warned that the continent is already facing challenges in providing care and support for a rapidly aging population.”

More people in Nigeria alone than the entire US in less than 35 years. Africans will be fleeing the continent like it’s a house on fire. Hmm, where will they go? As any ECON major knows, Asians are *ahem* not huge fans of blacks.

Raspail just picked the wrong continent.

Everything happens at once. Immigration isn’t the only problem with this country. It is a very big one, and will do much harm.

I really think the West has run out of energy and ideas. Kind of like what Spengler said. Vital societies just don’t get into these kinds of situations, or if they do they quit digging and try to get out.

This one? No sign of anything positive happening.

What does this mean? A fancy word for multi-racial society with scientific understanding?
It means Solzhenitsyn is a peasant loving flake.

I’ve always maintained that mass third world immigration into the west is neither inevitable or desirable. It is most definitely NOT an unstoppable, untameable ‘force of nature’ like a tsunami, hurricane or earthquake. It is purely and simply the result of political decisions – pen strokes on documents, made by well paid, well fed comfortably off men sitting in plush ofices and waited upon by servants, literally – who have made the executive decision to impose mass immigration on their nations purely for reasons of political dogma. Nothing more, nothing less. I must stress this point again, mass uncontrolled immigration is wholly and purely an exexcutive decision that could be halted as easily ait was started, it is an executive decision in exactly the same way the decision to import Japanese cars was an executive decision, there is no difference, it’s all about a planned, willed political, executive decision to relinquish control – which in a sovereign state politicians hold absolutely and unconditionally – over an area where they *CHOOSE* not exercise the powers of control they do have.
Sorry to be wordy and pedantic about it, but the above is a very, very important point, in fact it’s the only point in the whole immigration debate that matter’s a damn, and it is the, (albeit simple and obvious), point that most people in the debate don’t seem to grasp or understand.

  4. America is over. Finished. Done. Every unconnected White guy like me is toast. At best a Jew in Weimar. At worst …

Zero chance of sending these home much less the millions to follow. An MS 13 gang member has more rights, privileges, power, and protection, than me or Steve or Ron Unz.

In Europe it is worse. No one outside Russia has a will to fight and Putin has no will to keep Central Asia out … he wants his mini me Soviet Union too much.

Hollande, Merkel, Renzi, Cameron? Does anyone think they’ll keep illegals out much less deport those there?

White people, mostly White women looking for a career babysitting, moralizing, or nannying the third world wanted this. As SWPL Sandra Tsing Loh notes, who needs a beta male kitchen bithch when third world labor is cheap?

Yes Donor class, Adelman, Zuck. But mostly Id say about sixty percent of Whites want this and 90% of the upper class like a trendy African baby to show they care. Cue Sandra Bulock and Madonna.

Survival is key. Be mobile, skilled, have a passport, look to Asia or paradoxically parts of South America … Chile, Uruguay, maybe Peru.

But Western Civilization is over. America too.

  5. But national suicide is the “Christian” thing to do. Beck, Erickson, et al.

  6. Somewhat off topic but doesn’t that dingy filled with Africans look a bit like those line drawings of slave ships? Only the slave ships seemed to be more roomy, but I guess they were going across the Atlantic. I have to wonder if Africans are willing participants in modern Africa why wouldn’t they have been willing participants in 1600s Africa?

The same powers that had a vested interest in the transatlantic slave trade seem to have been updated for the modern I guess it would be called immigrant complex.

Respectfully, I have to disagree regarding the translation. I read it a decade or two back, and couldn't help but notice how clunky the translation was. Yes, it's a fabulous story (just think of the movie that could be made of it!), but the English version is absolutely leaden, a huge drawback. A more reader-friendly English-language version would do wonders for its exposure.

  9. 1/ Apocalypse? Shouldn’t that be Revelation? Bad translation? Or was there an error in the original?

Revelation is the KJV translation of the original Greek word, apocalypsis. The Greek title of the NT book is in direct translation, "The Uncovering/Revealing [of something] of John". Saint Jerome's Vulgate translation transliterates the Greek word for uncovering directly into Latin (apocalyptus or something like that) from whence the word apocalypse and its derivatives have passed into English and other christian-influenced languages. This neologism is maintained in most RC translations of the bible, which tend to be more faithful to the Vulgate. Given M. Raspail background, I imagine he used an RC translation and the translator was faithful to this.

  10. “I really think the West has run out of energy and ideas.”

It has for the most part. More immigration, more free trade, more rootless global finance. That pretty much sums up the ideology of the modern West in a nutshell.

Meanwhile, China continues to buy up more and more of the Earth’s natural resources, moving towards the day when they’ll simply own the world and will control it by default.

  11. 1. Surely white men with their superior intellect and creativity will solve this “problem” of scary brown people “invading ” “white” countries. C’mon members of the master race-surely a few darkies don’t scare your witless?

    2. Maybe Europe shouldn’t have brutally colonized these places. All of the third world countries are third world sac result of western rape .

3 . Your kids will probably end up dating marrying and having a child with a person of color so you better drop the white pride bull rap if you want to maintain your sanity .

I would like to point out that the most heavily colonized countries in Asia and Africa have higher living standards and GDP than those that were not. .....and if out marriage increases so much who will these childrens, children marry and identify with? I have always been curious which ethnic groups biracial children assimilate into. Especially Eurasian children. Do they marry whites or Asians? the rest I assume will assimilate in to the lower economic social level of the fathers background. The only women white men seen to marry are white or Asian...and once in a while a whiter looking Latina. But with gullible (bleeding heart) white women they seem to marry whatever group the media is promoting at the time.

Western rape? Wait 'til you see what the Chinese are capable of as they continue to colonize Africa and elsewhere. They don't have the white man's Christian guilt holding them back from unmitigated greed or motivating them to make amends for past sins. People of color (the non-asian hue) will be begging for the white man to come back.

"but there’s way too much French intellectual ranting and cardboard characterization for it to be a great novel."

It isn't really a novel at all. It's a meditation. As such it is wonderful. Some bits:

"In war, the real enemy is always behind the lines. Never in front of you, never among you. Always at your back."

"When freedom expands to mean freedom of instinct and social destruction, then freedom is dead."

"The Western heart, deep down, is all sham. In any event, they'll have lost the strength and the will to say no! Now, multiply that by a million mindless themes, applauded by a million milksop fathers, and you get some idea of the climate of total decay."

"They've gelded his will of its instinct for self-preservation."

Below is an excerpt from Raspail’s majestic introduction to the 3rd edition (1985) of Camp of the Saints. He indicates in passing why he doesn’t place Muslims/Africans at the core of his novel.

    :::

    Excerpted from introduction

…It’s enough to go back to the scary demographic predictions for the next thirty years, and those I will cite are the most favorable ones: encircled by seven billion people, only seven hundred million of them Caucasian, hardly a third of them in our little Europe, and those no longer in bloom but quite old.

They face a vanguard of four hundred million North Africans and Muslims, fifty percent of them less than twenty years old, those on the opposite shores of the Mediterranean arriving ahead of the rest of the world!

Can one imagine for a second, in the name of whatever ostrich-like blindness, that such a disequilibrium can endure?

    :::

At this juncture, the moment has arrived to explain why, in The Camp of the Saints, it is human masses coming from the far-away Ganges rather than the shores of the Mediterranean that overwhelm the South of France.

There are several reasons for this.

One pertains to prudence on my part, and especially to my refusal to enter the false debate about racism and anti-racism in French daily life, as well as my revulsion at describing the racial tensions already discernible (but for the moment not fit for discussion) for fear of exacerbating them.

To be sure, a mighty vanguard is already here, and expresses its intention to stay even as it refuses to assimilate; in twenty years they will make up thirty percent —strongly motivated foreigners, in the bosom of a people that once was French…

For the West is empty, even if it has not yet become really aware of it.

An extraordinarily inventive civilization, surely the only one capable of meeting the challenges of the third millennium, the West has no soul left. At every level —nations, races, cultures, as well as individuals— it is always the soul that wins the decisive battles. It is only the soul that forms the weave of gold and brass from which the shields that save the strong are fashioned. I can hardly discern any soul in us.

Looking, for example, at my own country, France, I often get the impression, as in a bad dream dreamt wide-awake, that many Frenchmen of true lineage are no longer anything but hermit-clams that live in shells abandoned by the representatives of a species, now disappeared, that was known as “French” and which did not forecast, through some unknown genetic mystery, the one that at century’s end has wrapped itself in this name. They are content to just endure…

But the petty bourgeois, deaf and blind, continues to play the buffoon without knowing it. Still miraculously comfortable in his lush fields, he cries out while glancing toward his nearest neighbor: “Make the rich pay!”

Does he know, does he finally know that it is he who is the rich one, and that the cry for justice, that cry of all revolutions, projected by millions of voices, is rising soon against him, and only against him.

That’s the whole theme of Camp of the Saints.

    So, what to do?

I am a novelist. I have no theory, no system nor ideology to propose or defend. It just seems to me that we are facing a unique alternative: either learn the resigned courage of being poor or find again the inflexible courage to be rich. In both cases, so-called Christian charity will prove itself powerless.

    The times will be cruel.

Camp of the Saints is pretty good for the science fiction genre, and the central conceit is obviously genius, but there's way too much French intellectual ranting and cardboard characterization for it to be a great novel.

It isn’t really a novel at all. It’s a meditation. As such it is wonderful. Some bits:

“In war, the real enemy is always behind the lines. Never in front of you, never among you. Always at your back.”

“When freedom expands to mean freedom of instinct and social destruction, then freedom is dead.”

“The Western heart, deep down, is all sham. In any event, they’ll have lost the strength and the will to say no! Now, multiply that by a million mindless themes, applauded by a million milksop fathers, and you get some idea of the climate of total decay.”

Literarily, even in translation, The Camp of the Saints is an excellent novel. A tribute to the translator and the author both.

    Replies: @Anonymous

Respectfully, I have to disagree regarding the translation. I read it a decade or two back, and couldn’t help but notice how clunky the translation was. Yes, it’s a fabulous story (just think of the movie that could be made of it!), but the English version is absolutely leaden, a huge drawback. A more reader-friendly English-language version would do wonders for its exposure.

From Raspail's majestic introduction to the 3rd edition (1985) of Camp of the Saints. He mentions in passing why he chose not to place Africans/Muslims at the center of his novel.

    Excerpted from the Introduction

It's enough to go back to the scary demographic predictions for the next thirty years, and those I will cite are the most favorable ones: encircled by seven billion people, only seven hundred million of them Caucasian, hardly a third of them in our little Europe, and those no longer in bloom but quite old.

    :::

To be sure, a mighty vanguard is already here, and expresses its intention to stay even as it refuses to assimilate; in twenty years they will make up thirty percent — strongly motivated foreigners, in the bosom of a people that once was French...

    :::

For the West is empty, even if it has not yet become really aware of it.

An extraordinarily inventive civilization, surely the only one capable of meeting the challenges of the third millennium, the West has no soul left. At every level — nations, races, cultures, as well as individuals — it is always the soul that wins the decisive battles. It is only the soul that forms the weave of gold and brass from which the shields that save the strong are fashioned. I can hardly discern any soul in us.

Looking, for example, at my own country, France, I often get the impression, as in a bad dream dreamt wide-awake, that many Frenchmen of true lineage are no longer anything but hermit-clams that live in shells abandoned by the representatives of a species, now disappeared, that was known as "French" and which did not forecast, through some unknown genetic mystery, the one that at century's end has wrapped itself in this name. They are content to just endure...

They even deployed EU troops [!] in blue helmets in Spain and Sicly.

In 1992 I watched a tv movie, fairly good,in which a Louisiana family led by Craig Nelson left the impoverished fishing coast where he had made his living and joined AMerican economic and environmental refugees heading north across a collapsing USA, hoping to get into Canada to find his distant Acadian relatives. They had some trouble with the fascist looking Canadian border police. As a Canadian, I wish we had those.

Then in 2004 that absurd Day After Tomorrow came out.

In 2004, I remember thinking, get real. Those Americans wouldn’t be refugees in MExico. MExico would become USA 2.0 with that much stray military power around. The only problem would be resources to maintain it, controlling the MExicans, and maintaining control over anything of value left in CONUS.

In 1992, I had to speculate about how Canada could hope to maintain independence in the scenario offered, and what measures wouldI advocate to control and/or resist the entry of huge numbers of Americans, many of whom would seem a close kindred people, but frankly all of whom would mean near-term chaos in our country and long term would far more likely assimilate us and alter our country and its institutions than the reverse. I eventually concluded there would have to be rather rigorous and politically impossible screening criteria, not only by ethnicity, and there would be a compulsory oath of allegiance to the Queen or you’d have to be shot right there. We’d have to seriously alter the harshness of Canadian jurisprudence to make things like that stick.

So I’ve thought about it all more than a few different ways, not least what it means when the refugees are a kindred people, from a long allied nation, but still radically different and more numerous. Or, as in that 2004 movie and 1992 telefilm, when the refugees represent the former dominant power and still have power. Imagine what it would have been like to be a Sarmatian and find that some Mediterranean catastrophe had caused the entire population of a collapsing Roman Empire to disgorge itself, with Legions, onto the Pontic steppes via Crimea.

But when it comes to the March or Raspail’s scenario, I can still only see tactical and logistical problems.

    1. Surely white men with their superior intellect and creativity will solve this “problem” of scary brown people “invading ” “white” countries. C’mon members of the master race-surely a few darkies don’t scare your witless?

It's the warm sentiments and glowing compassion of the People of Color and their allies that really sells me on open borders, mass immigration, and dieversity. I hesitate, and am then bathed in the light and warmth of their good intentions, and suddenly I know all will be well.

    2. Maybe Europe shouldn’t have brutally colonized these places. All of the third world countries are third world sac result of western rape .

Come now, surely you can do better than "sure, dieversity sucks, dieversity will kill you, but you deserve it." Right?

3 . Your kids will probably end up dating marrying and having a child with a person of color so you better drop the white pride bull rap if you want to maintain your sanity .

See? That's much better. You catch so many more flies with honey.

    4. You guys sound selfish. Why should one have a better life just because they were born into a good situation?

Darn, now you're back to negativity again. "We're going to take everything you've got" is kinda weak tea, no?

Your comment section has really improved since the Unz move. Congrats. Maybe by getting rid of the KKK and Stormfront contingent you start making real traction.

Now, see, there's how a refugee from the environments his kind creates does persuasion! "If you kill yourself, the world will love you!" That's much more persuasive.

If you’re going to play the troll you should try to be amusing. The way you did it we know you’re really a hard core “white supremacist” completely devoid of a sense of humor.

That type of troll has been around so long, I no longer think of them as trolls. He could easily be a genuine "ANTI-RACIST!!!" They tend to aggressively promote the idea that the white man deserves the punishment of dieversity.

Spoke too soon. At least one Stormfront tree-hugger’s made the migration to Unz.

  62. Re: “The premise, that the whole western world is hanging on whether the French will or won’t show some backbone, is pretty ridiculous. But I guess American movies that have an American hero save the world (Independence Day, Armaggedon, Star Trek…) must look ridiculous in Russia or China.”

Actually the novel isn’t based on the premise that the western world depends on France. The novel is clear that this invasion is merely the tip of the spear — it is not simply France that lacks a backbone but the entire West (excluding Apartheid South Africa, which warns the armada off). Raspail makes it clear that they land in France, of all Western nations, pretty much by chance

But here’s a fact I find interesting. As late as 1994, this book was discussed in the Atlantic Monthly in a mostly positive way (http://www.theatlantic.com/past/politics/immigrat/kennf.htm). That’s how I came to learn of it and borrow it from my university library.

I doubt this novel is likely to be cited in a positive fashion in the Atlantic any time soon and I very much doubt my Alma Mater still has the book on the shelves for interested undergraduates to read.

This really is an example of a dangerous book — it has to be denounced and suppressed.

  63. I can’t speak for Solzhenitsyn, and I have no clue what he originally said in Russia, but if he has any physics training, as many Russian intellectuals do…from what I remember from calculus, a stable equilibrium is one that, if disturbed, the system returns to. An unstable equilibrium is one that, if disturbed, the system moves away from. A metastable equilibrium is in between–it may go either way.

I suspect Solzhenitsyn meant unstable, but it is also quite possible that the Russian had deeper shades of meaning in mind–‘it’s not too late but we can still screw it up’.

Anyone else with a little more physics?

Western rape? Wait ’til you see what the Chinese are capable of as they continue to colonize Africa and elsewhere. They don’t have the white man’s Christian guilt holding them back from unmitigated greed or motivating them to make amends for past sins. People of color (the non-asian hue) will be begging for the white man to come back.
