Coronavirus: Israel Will Require Quarantine For Everyone Entering The Country

BILL CHAPPELLIsrael is taking the extraordinary step of requiring a 14-day quarantine for anyone entering the country, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Monday. Israel has reported nearly 40 cases of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
In a brief video announcing the new policy, Netanyahu said the decision was a difficult one to make. He added that the policy will force people flying into Israel to enter a two-week home quarantine period and that it will be in effect for two weeks.
“Foreign nationals who cannot self-quarantine will be refused entry,” NPR’s Daniel Estrin reports from Jerusalem. He adds, “All Israelis returning from abroad must self-quarantine.”
There are only a very limited number of Jewish People in the world.

If banning travelers from China was prudent on January 30th then banning travelers from Europe and Korea should have been done yesterday….to keep it simple he should just ban all foreigners from entry for the next 2 weeks while we contain the pandemic. Every article I’ve been reading about the virus, that allows comments, seems to have comments likening COVID-19 to the common cold. It’s like no-one ever heard of the Chinese Government’s rush to build new “hospitals” to warehouse their deluge of critically ill patients. It’s not the common cold.
So do our own rulers, of course. They just don't see us as part of their own.

If the US had banned all international flights on January 23 for 60 days, we wouldn’t be looking at a pending doom right now.
But the biggest fault lies with China. If China had ground all outbound flights the day they locked down Wuhan, we wouldn’t be looking at this pandemic right now, and the hit to the world economy would’ve been temporary, limited to the supply side. Instead, they whined about other countries not allowing in their travelers, and insisted on continuing to let their people fly everywhere, spreading this virus far and wide. Now Covid-19 will drag on for months, turning this into a demand side problem and likely bring on a world recession. Not only that, but now everybody hates China and the Chinese. In fact, all Asians are now pariahs outside Asia because non-Asians can’t tell them apart. All the work the CCP have done in the past 2 decades to improve their image around the world is destroyed in one month thanks to their greed, hubris and myopia. Dumb.
This should be a lesson for the future. The only way to prevent a pandemic is to wall off the country where the outbreak started, stop all outbound flights from that country immediately. Allow other countries to evacuate their own citizens then quarantine them upon repatriation.

The Coronavirus is >10-50x more deadly than the flu. That many cases of it here would mean more than a million deaths and more in need of hospitalization than we have hospital beds.
COVID-19 is harder to spread than the flu. South Korea is the gold standard for stats because of the massive number of people they've tested. Their mortality rate is 0.6%. And South Korea is not being heavy handed like the Chinese were. Who knows what else was going on in China that we still don't know about.

I suspect the Wuhan strain, the L strain, was very likely brought over to Italy with the garment workers, and that's why it's been spreading so fast in the latter country. Once recent measure of the Wuhan RO says it was 3.8, meaning 1 person could infect 3.8 people. Since it's likely the L strain is what's raging through the garment factories, and thence into the prostitution providers, the L strain is likely not to just hit Italy, but other regional nations which have had men travelling to Italy for sexual tourism.
Anyone who paid attention to how ebola spread in Africa is going to see the parallel. But Covid-19 doesn't even need sexual contact to spread, so it's going to infect many more than ebola did.
Italy now has almost 2x the death rate of Iran's 3.6. Many of the third world countries do not have the medical infrastructure to contain it, and as long as their citizens can keep travelling or sneaking into 1st world countries, they'll keep bringing the virus right back to us even if we get rid of it here, and they may be carrying mutated and worse strains of it.

'Slow rolling' the disease is good practice to keep from crushing hospitals under a load of patients they can't treat, but the longer we spread out the contagion of the disease throughout a world population of 7 billion, the more we will have a probability of seeing mutant and more deadly strains of the virus emerge. In the Spanish flu, the most deadly wave was the 2nd one, not the 1st one.

14 days is the practical maximum period of voluntary quarantine that can be implemented. Any longer period would lead to people abandoning the effort early or cutting too many corners.
The larger purpose of quarantine is to SLOW the spread of the infection. Even if 14 days is not sufficient to stop infections spreading FROM the quarantined individual entirely, it will at least have prevented the infection spreading from that individual during those 14 days.
Also bear in mind that many individuals in quarantine are not infected at all and with hindsight did not need to be quarantined at all. On the plus side, those “innocent” quarantined individuals will be highly unlikely to have caught the infection while quarantined.
Going forward, testing of quarantined individuals, say on Day 3, should be able to ascertain with a high degree of accuracy whether COVID-19 is present. Those given the all clear can then go back to their normal routine (including the regular risk of actually catching the infection later).

But while that’s not ascertained, one cannot just take the CFR reported in a single country, even with a large number of cases, and, based on it, make policy decisions. Taking the country with the highest CFR and going with it would be wrong, but taking the lowest CFR country and assuming that’s it would be potentially deadly to large numbers of people.

Assuming it infects 1% of the population the United States across all ages, and that 1% of the cases, overall, result in death, that would already be over 30,000 deaths spread over just a few months. In my country, that’d be 20,000 deaths. I’ll leave aside the much larger number of patients which will eventually recover, but not after a hospital stay, and the associated costs.
But talk about a conservative, even optimistic estimate: it possibly won’t kill just 1% of the infected. And it will certainly infect more, possibly way more, than 1% of the population in many countries unless it’s swiftly contained. That’s not just me saying it.
And even if it is contained, it is causing disruption around the world right now. It is not the only pressing matter, and perhaps not even the most important, but it is absolutely a big one.
