Yes, I did. I plead lateness of the hour. As a talmudist I was thinking of 'lashon mishna' as in "habata b'hefker kani"(in the case of ownerless property, viewing effects acquisition) of Bava Metzi'a 118a. What I should have been thinking of is 'lashon mikreh' (biblical language) as in "lvateh b'sfsayim" (to pronounce with the lips) of Leviticus 5-4. Apologies.

And that is the problem with Whitey. We "do give a Fuck" for everybody and everything but ourselves. And speaking about sex, we don't actually fuck. We just give a fuck. It is a fucked up situation.

I know this is a polite forum, but politeness has its limits. I don't have a political solution for the current predicament of European man, but I have a personal solution. And it is simple. Fuck. You have a sacred duty to chase your women. They expect it and they get crazy and depressed if they don't get chased. And if you are ugly and broke, chase after ugly and chubby ones. Translations don't have to be literal. "Freedom of Speech" is more or less the same thing as "Freedom of Expression" and is the more common way of expressing this concept. I don't downgrade IJ's translation at all for translating it in this way. The meaning is preserved. You have to translate an entire phrase or idiom (ironically in Hebrew this also translates to "bitui") as a whole and not pick it apart word by word.

This is true of totalitarians in general and of their attitude toward all democratic norms (and the Left is totalitarian) . Erdogan of Turkey said it best (at a point when his power was secure enough to actually admit what he had done - the American Left still has to pretend that this is not the plan):

Democracy is like a trolley car. When you come to your stop, you get off.

In other words, the end is power. Democracy, freedom of speech, etc. are means to the end and are useful as long as they further your achievement of power. Once you have reached power, they become the tools of the opposition and have to be suppressed. One you understand that it's all about who/whom then it makes perfect sense that freedom of speech was good in the past (when the Left was not in power) but is bad now (when they are). Freedom of speech has no innate goodness or badness in itself. Rather it is like a gun, whose badness depends on who is wielding it and for what purpose.

Nonsense. Early 20th century American free speech jurisprudence was driven largely by anti-government agitators from the Communist / Anarchist wing of the American Left. Look at the defendants in Schenck v. United States, Abrams v. United States, and Gitlow v. New York. Whatever else you want to say about the 20th century American Left (and in contrast to their contemptible heirs), they fought for free speech for considerably longer than a single decade.

Some commenter around these parts, I don’t remember who, claiming to be a grizzled veteran of two marriages and countless flings, said that in his estimation, most women (healthy, heterosexual women, at least) want to have sex about once every two days. They’ll take more than that, of course, if you’re offering, but if they’re consistently getting less than that, they get anxious and depressed.

That seems about right to me. I wonder how much of young women’s cratering mental health is attributable to their romantic partners being porn addicts who largely eschew doing things the old fashioned way (though I imagine they still jerk off manually, as The Dude would say — btw, OT, but Jeff Bridges has announced he has lymphoma; hope he has a speedy recovery).

Of course, maybe that’s just me being a now-not-so-young man flattering myself that, gee golly, were I only their age, I would give those nubile young ladies exactly what they need, unlike their loser boyfriends. I think men of every generation end up being tempted to see themselves and their age cohort as the last of the “real men” (I call it the “Last of the Mohicans delusion”). Young men strike you as wimpier and wimpier while young women get prettier and prettier. Oh well, I’ll hold onto my precious illusions. Beats the alternative, as Twain observed.

Translations don’t have to be literal. “Freedom of Speech” is more or less the same thing as “Freedom of Expression” and is the more common way of expressing this concept. I don’t downgrade IJ’s translation at all for translating it in this way. The meaning is preserved. You have to translate an entire phrase or idiom (ironically in Hebrew this also translates to “bitui”) as a whole and not pick it apart word by word.

This is true of totalitarians in general and of their attitude toward all democratic norms (and the Left is totalitarian) . Erdogan of Turkey said it best (at a point when his power was secure enough to actually admit what he had done – the American Left still has to pretend that this is not the plan):

Democracy is like a trolley car. When you come to your stop, you get off.

In other words, the end is power. Democracy, freedom of speech, etc. are means to the end and are useful as long as they further your achievement of power. Once you have reached power, they become the tools of the opposition and have to be suppressed. One you understand that it’s all about who/whom then it makes perfect sense that freedom of speech was good in the past (when the Left was not in power) but is bad now (when they are).

Nonsense, yourself. Free speech is the purview of those who support the US Constitution. These people would be called Constiutionalists, of course, and Libertarians, which is the term for people who long ago were called simply "Liberals". The US Constitution fared pretty damn well before all your* Commie Anarchist wing people ever came here.

Great on them for being defendants and bringing up Amendment I in court, but it was just to help themselves out. How can you be a freakin' Constitutionalist when you are an Anarchist or a Commie? NONSENSE.

The American left fought hard for free speech because it helped them out, making for great rallying cries on university campuses and great technical outs in the courtrooms after violent riots , err, protests using free speech.

If you look at it objectively, this is actually awesome. And how did they do it? They just don't give a fuck. The Jews have one set of politics for domestic issues and another one for the world. And they just don't give a fuck.

I am serious. Woman can not be loyal to a race of men, that refuses to fuck her. Woman's loyalty is personal and emotional, not abstract. Consider it a public service. Turn off the lights if you have to. And enjoy it. Sex is fun.

But the young men today, really fuck less than the previous generations. There are numbers somewhere about it but I just don't care to look them up at the moment. There is porn. There is internet and there is too much distraction in general. And also, there is the curious case of declining sperm count in Western Men in the last 50 years:

    https://www.healthline.com/health-news/sperm-counts-have-dropped-in-western-countries#Whats-the-cause?

    https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/sperm-count-dropping-in-western-world/

The sperm count MORE THAN HALVED in the western population in the last 50 years. I wonder what happened to the hormones as well. Some people think this is because of toxic effects of micro-plastic. Could it really be that simple? Maybe the biggest reason for such a rapid decline of western civilization is - plastic?

This theory would explain a lot of current madness:
toxins -> hormonal imbalances in men -> lack of masculine power -> angry frustrated women -> bedlam.

Or it may be attributable to antidepressants knocking out their sex drive altogether. How many young people are taking antidepressants? I'd guess that a huge proportion are doing so.

It may even be that viewing porn is a desperate attempt to reawaken their libidos. It's also possible that reduced sex drive due to prescription medications encourages an interest in kinky sex, again as a desperate attempt to get something happening down there.

It's also quite likely that a lot of the young women are rejecting sexual advances from their partners because antidepressants have killed their sex drives, leading to craziness for both partners.

It's possible that porn is not the main driving force here.

Of course antidepressants can reduce your interest in emotional engagement as well as sex, which is another good way to destroy normal relationships.

Making things worse, those prepositions, conjunctions and articles are just one letter long. So Google is always mistaking these compounds forsingle words whose first letter happens to be the same asthepreposition, conjunction or article that's actually there.

If you know something of Russian or Latin, then you'll recognize a slight parallel to case endings; case endings are sorta kinda like prepositions getting attached to a noun. Except they're attached to the end, not to the beginning, and I think that's easier for a machine to sort out. Not to mention that conjunctions never get glommed on to nouns in Russian or Latin AFAIK.

(The "issuing oats" thing is an example of a different kind of error, though.)

Some people think this is because of toxic effects of micro-plastic. Could it really be that simple? Maybe the biggest reason for such a rapid decline of western civilization is – plastic?

But legal protections against governmental restrictions on speech were far weaker back then. The cases I cited above, by the way, did not have favorable outcomes for the defendants. I cite them because they represent the beginning of the line of free speech jurisprudence that culminated in Brandenburg v. Ohio, and they show that members of the Left, whatever their motivations, were fighting against the government’s regulation of speech well before the 1960s. The Schenck defendants (who were socialists) were jailed for distributing fliers to young men urging them not to submit to the WWI draft, and the Supreme Court upheld their conviction under the Espionage Act of 1917. I think most people here, even you Achmed, would agree that the First Amendment should protect Americans from being jailed for distributing anti-draft fliers, but in the good old days you refer to, it didn’t.

Incidentally, the defendant in Brandenburg, who had been jailed for giving a speech at a KKK rally, was represented by a Jewish ACLU lawyer named Allen Brown. At oral argument before the Supreme Court, the attorney for Ohio set up the following hypothetical (probably in reference to “fighting words” doctrine): “If I were to run down Harlem, saying ‘bury the Negro, send them back to black Africa—” But he was cut off by Justice Thurgood Marshall, who said, “You wouldn’t last that long” (to laughter). When he got up to give his rebuttal, Allen Brown began by saying, “Justice Marshall is safe for the moment because the venue is in Washington, D.C., but in Ohio he could be indicted for suggesting a violent reaction by the Negro community.” The Court ruled per curiam in favor of Brandenburg. Surely we can agree that now more than ever, in an era in which violence is increasingly attributed to the Bad Thoughts of white people, we must appreciate the robust protections for free speech — and specifically, the high bar for showing incitement — afforded by cases like Brandenburg and the ACLU lawyers who argued them.

Free speech is the purview of those who support the US Constitution.

Well, I mean, except if you have a working Constitutional Republic with a unified people who believe, politics aside, the Law of the Land is the Law of the Land, bottom line. (oops, can’t have many women voters then … sorry, Ann Coulter only.)

No, that's not what I meant, but that's my fault. That sentence should have read "Real support for free speech is the purview of those who support the US Constitution" I didn't mean this is who it applies to. I actually only applies to actions of the Federal Government to stop free speech, until you go to the "incorporation" interpretations of Amendment XIV.

About your cases though, I still agree with Curle in his reply to your first comment. True, he wrote 1920s, while your WWI draft case is obviously earlier. I've read something about the anarchists of a century ago. They may have been very principled in wanted that right to speak out against the war or anything else. I guess they supported B.o.R, Amendment II also, for obvious reasons. However, I wonder if they really gave a damn about all the wisdom enshrined in the rest of the Constitution, being Anarchists. OK, you may say, they still were for free speech and in the right. (Of course I agree they were in the right on this.) Was it not only for their benefit? Maybe that's the case, no pun intended will most Supreme Court cases.

So Google is always mistaking these compounds forsingle words whose first letter happens to be the same asthepreposition, conjunction or article that’s actually there.

Aside from the problem in parsing Hebrew prefixes (and suffixes), which I think is a relatively minor and solvable problem, the further apart any two languages are in their grammatical structure, the harder it is for machine translation to reconstruct the sentence in the translated language in a way that is grammatically correct (or sometimes even understandable).

A much more difficult to solve problem is distinguishing idioms and metaphors from the literal meaning of words and phrases and choosing among various meanings (the same word often means several things depending on the context), especially in proper names where words are often chosen for their metaphorical rather than their literal meaning.

Shibboleth, in addition to having the same meaning as it does in English (actually vice versa) also means a head of grain - in fact that was its original meaning. It acquired its secondary or idiomatic meaning in a Bible story in which it was used as a password in a Jewish intra-tribal war. In order to identify (and kill) the retreating Ephraimites, the Gileadites told each suspected Ephraimite to say the word "shibboleth" (the meaning was irrelevant - they could have chosen any "sh" word). In Ephraimite dialect, shibboleth was pronounced sibboleth and so anyone who said sibboleth was outed as an Ephraimite. Thus the modern secondary meaning - it signifies that the original meaning of something has been lost and that the word now serves merely to identify tribal identity.

So the Hebrew word for publishing can also be translated as issuing and shibboleth can also be translated as oats and in Hebrew word order you say "Publishing Shibboleth" instead of "Shibboleth Publishing" (the name of a publishing house, ironically chosen to mean that they are a publisher who is willing to DEFY shibboleths) , so that's how you get "issuing oats". All of the idiom and irony and metaphor that are laden into the two words "Shibboleth Publishing" just flew over the machine's level of comprehension and understanding and it went with a literal translation.

The US Constitution fared pretty damn well before all your* Commie Anarchist wing people ever came here.

You’re entitled to your opinion, but if you’re saying that the First Amendment does not protect the speech of those who do not “support the US Constitution,” you’re simply incorrect. It absolutely does, as made crystal clear in the line of “incitement” cases described above. You can call for throwing out the Constitution and replacing it with a pig’s head on a stick, and your speech is protected unless and until you start to advocate “imminent lawless action.”

    Replies: @Achmed E. Newman

Thank you for the well-written reply, Pirelli. I should have looked up your 2 cases, I guess, but I enjoyed your historical descriptions of them.

You’re entitled to your opinion, but if you’re saying that the First Amendment does not protect the speech of those who do not “support the US Constitution,” you’re simply incorrect.

No, that’s not what I meant, but that’s my fault. That sentence should have read “Real support for free speech is the purview of those who support the US Constitution” I didn’t mean this is who it applies to. I actually only applies to actions of the Federal Government to stop free speech, until you go to the “incorporation” interpretations of Amendment XIV.

About your cases though, I still agree with Curle in his reply to your first comment. True, he wrote 1920s, while your WWI draft case is obviously earlier. I’ve read something about the anarchists of a century ago. Maybe that’s the case, no pun intended will most Supreme Court cases.

I wonder how much of young women’s cratering mental health is attributable to their romantic partners being porn addicts who largely eschew doing things the old fashioned way

Or it may be attributable to antidepressants knocking out their sex drive altogether. How many young people are taking antidepressants? I’d guess that a huge proportion are doing so.

It may even be that viewing porn is a desperate attempt to reawaken their libidos. It’s also possible that reduced sex drive due to prescription medications encourages an interest in kinky sex, again as a desperate attempt to get something happening down there.

It’s also quite likely that a lot of the young women are rejecting sexual advances from their partners because antidepressants have killed their sex drives, leading to craziness for both partners.

It’s possible that porn is not the main driving force here.

Of course antidepressants can reduce your interest in emotional engagement as well as sex, which is another good way to destroy normal relationships.

That’s an interesting idea that increased viewing of porn, and in particular fetish porn, might be a symptom of declining libidos rather than a cause of less frequent sex, but I’m not convinced. Specifically, I’m not convinced that libidos have actually gone down, although the frequency of sex almost certainly has. This article has lots of helpful data:

    https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/12/the-sex-recession/573949/

“From 1992 to 2014, the share of American men who reported masturbating in a given week doubled, to 54 percent, and the share of women more than tripled, to 26 percent. Easy access to porn is part of the story, of course; in 2014, 43 percent of men said they’d watched porn in the past week. The vibrator figures in, too—a major study 10 years ago found that just over half of adult women had used one, and by all indications it has only grown in popularity.”

Do you have data showing that libidos have actually declined, rather than masturbation becoming more frequent relative to intercourse?

I wonder how much of young women’s cratering mental health is attributable to their romantic partners being porn addicts who largely eschew doing things the old fashioned way

plus several million Palestinians, to be used as needed. That’s pretty impressive for a country with only six million fully human citizens.

Israel relies plenty on foreign labor. They just know how to treat gentiles as the animals that they are. Look at how they keep us in line and squirting out the milk.

    Sorry- but this is rubbish.

Complete & utter rubbish, so idiotic it need not be refuted.

That is to say, it’s the truth, but you find it awkward to admit it.
