An anonymous commenter suggests:

The backward focus of Western progressives also obscures the massive land grab in Africa today. Industrial agriculture and logging, both chinese and western, displace subsistence peoples into urban slums. But *this* neo-colonialism serves the interests of the economic upper stratum and is rarely reported upon as such. The american left, useful idiots that they are, see only the rear-view mirror of history and their own navels.

I’d also suggest the immigration pressure on Europe is an effort to redomicile this excess population (in service of the same economic interests).

That’s a pretty interesting idea.

It’s not uncommon down through history to have a farm population scratching out a marginal living using traditional means off land that a few bright guys then figure out can more profitably be repurposed for other uses. The peasants are driven to emigrate by insiders cashing in on the value of the land. The most famous example were the Enclosures in Britain, but NAFTA’s destruction of small corn farmers in Mexico is a more recent instance.

Africa is an enormous amount of land that traditionally wasn’t fully exploited. Francis Galton suggested 142 years ago that the Chinese would make far more off African land than Africans would.

But now there are a billion Africans, so they have to be redomiciled somewhere if the Africa is to be most profitably exploited.

  1. but somehow each and every way in which outsiders have allegedly exploited Subsaharan Africa and its people has lead to a sunk mortality and at the same time constant fertility.

  2. Part of the process driving Africans off agricultural land and into the cities is western-style education. Once Africans get a primary school education, they feel they are too good to work the land as peasants anymore and head off to the overcrowded cities where there is absolutely nothing for them to do. So some far from marginal land lays fallow in Africa because of a lack of rural labor while African cities overflow with unemployed with nothing to do. The Chinese are probably now stepping in to exploit the best of this underutilized land.

Some nations such as Belgium allowed the elite of Africa to study at their universities. These Africans almost never moved back to Africa after graduation but because of the selection process, they ended up becoming serviceable citizens within a European context. Which only resulted in Europeans lowering their guard and they are now ideologically unable to resist the current invasion of very much non-elite Africans.

The FT had an article about this phenomenon occurring in Ghana. The cocoa farm owners are now in their 50s & 60s, their kids went to college but there are no jobs. They'd rather collect aid and live in cities then work on their parents farm since these jobs are now deemed beneath them.

Cocoa production has plummeted in Ghana as a result.

Mistaken! I haven't got time to reference, but the blogs (including this one) are ripe with examples of Chinese companies setting up mega-farms in Ethiopia and elsewhere to grow food and raise chickens and pigs for the Chinese population. And, yes, they have raised the living standards for the few(er) Africans needed to work on these farms with high investment and rationalized workflow processes.

Contracting to raise special soy beans for the Asian market is also happening in the United States. I once worked as the marketing representative for a mid-Western state. Taiwanese companies were queuing up to contract for the soy crops. However, the stubborn farmers refused. As one told me, "My granddaddy grew wheat ... my daddy grew wheat ... and I'm going to grow wheat!" Wow! And the Asians were ready to pre-buy the crops, which meant the soy beans were pre-sold without risk to the farmers. [?]

  4. The Guardian — Fred Pearce: Land grabbing has more of an impact on the world’s poor than climate change

At the moment, for Europe it is important — vital — to stop what is happening now — not to analyze the reasons for it (albeit this is not unimportant). Direct action is required — not a lot of thinking and analyzing and debating.

Already Germany expects two cities the size of Leipzig to arrive this year (and this number will probably rise) — all 3rd world muslims and Africans.

    Denmark — Dänemark — Asylanten-integration gescheitert

Attempts to integrate refugees and asylum seekers in Denmark have completely failed (what a surprise).

Drei von vier Flüchtlingen, die in den frühen 2000er Jahren nach Dänemark kamen, sind zehn Jahre später arbeitslos.

75% of those who arrived 10 or more years ago are still unemployed. They are unemployable, a permanent burden on taxpayers — a free life in a nice, white country.

Utter nonsense. Most immigrants to Germany are from Europe. Even if you count refugees (asylum seekers) alone, it doesn't hold water. Single biggest group of refugees is from Syria, but more than a 3rd of refugees in Germany are from the Balkans (most of which will probably be sent back there, since the German government considers the Balkans safe).

For the original topic, that's probably nonsense, too. I wait for the statistics to convince me otherwise. Most of the current migrants seem to be rather well off, considering the amount of money they have to pay to the traffickers. Where would subsistence farmers get that money from (unless they get paid quite some for being driven from their land, but I haven't heard anything about that)?

  6. Damn right that’s an interesting idea. And as you note, Steve, it wouldn’t be the first time.

The great migration of blacks from the rural south to the inner city has analogous causes.

  7. We are blind: mass immigration into the US and EU driven by land appropriation in Mexico and Africa. Of course, the pundits are now claiming that all those African immigrants (colonialists) entering Europe are really middle class people with middle class skills, so not to worry.

A century ago, mechanization of American agriculture drove both Whites and Blacks off the land into the cities, too. Burgeoning industrialization absorbed them, in part because the skills needed in the factories weren’t all that great nor all that different than what a farm worker had. Globalization has reversed American industrialization and created a large, truly surplus (not Marx’s lumpenprolitariat) worker population. A significant fraction of China’s rural population moved to industrializing cities, also.

Reportedly,China has purchased quite a bit of Ukrainian farmland in the western part of the country. Could that be a contributor to the civil war now underway there?

  8. There might be a little bit here, but usually the extra money from higher-value land use goes to creating urban jobs. It looks like the extra money is funding migration from Africa. Or, indirectly, the added wealth brings internet access and information that shows the West as a place with easy women and loot; thus time for a road trip.

The NAFTA thing is often cited, but I looked at a couple reports that had the Mexican farm population staying the same with farm subsidies increasing to account for NAFTA. I ask everyone who mentions this if they know any immigrants from Mexico that have been displaced by NAFTA, and no one has.

    • Replies: @AnAnon
    @bomag

If there is a direct economic cause in Mexico, it had more to do with the devaluation of the peso. But honestly, the flood of migration is due to one number, and one number only: Mexico's TFR for the past century.

  9. Another famous instance was the Highland Clearances in Scotland, which drove emigration to England, North America, and Australia.

In the late 18th century well into the 19th century, Highland estates moved from arable and mixed farming, which supported a large tenant population, to the more profitable sheep-farming. Surplus tenants were ‘cleared’ off the estates from about 1780; and the Clearances were ongoing nearly 70 years later.

You can see the clannish behaviours in Aussies whose ancestors were from the Celtic fringes of the British Isles. Lower trust, suspicions about outsiders. May help them hold on to their territory.

  10. Mass population movement is a basic feature of capitalism. (I don’t like to post my own links, but I have written about this.) Africans (as slaves) to the Americas; displaced European peasants to North America; displaced peasants to cities in their own countries; blacks from south to north in the US; non-elite whites to the suburbs; and now blacks to the suburbs.

I had never thought of the current movement of Africans as part of this though. We hear of the ones moving as being relatively well-off. But the Chinese don’t need the Africans as laborers, they don’t need them for anything, so this is logical.

    • Replies: @Big Bill
    @Thrasymachus

Chinese contracts in Africa typically include requirements to hire African workers, on the condition that they work hard. When they don't, the Chinese companies get to bring in other workers (read Indian and Chinese) to replace them.

  11. Pat Casey says:

Makes me think of how the first anthropologists into Africa called those hunter-gathers the original affluent society, since they only had to “work” a few hours a week killing big game to survive. The rest of life was oh so easy. Which recalls Pat Moynihan’s deafening remonstration regarding Africa’s inability to feed itself, considering that growing food is the first thing we learned to do when we “came down out of the trees.” City life ill-fits their proclivities. Africa simply can’t feed itself well enough. Foreign aid should be per herds of cattle.

Actually, the affluent society comment was made by Marshall Sahlins in 1966, in light of then-new research by people like Richard Borshay Lee on the economy of hunter-gatherer groups such as the !Kung bushmen in southern Africa.

For several hundred years, most people in sub-Saharan Africa have been horticulturalists (farmers) or pastoralists (herders). While apparently, those are more time-consuming ways to make a living, they can also support larger populations and this has led to competition with hunter-gatherers who've suffered increasing territorial marginalization to the point where there are very few of them left today. In some cases they've joined the other team, but in many cases they've actually died out. It's definitely not the hunter-gatherers whose population is exploding in Africa today.

What leisure time the !Kung enjoy is partly thanks to their lifestyle's low overhead. They live in small groups and have very few personal possessions. They don't require as many resources as most other people and that's why they've been able to survive for so long in an extreme environment like the Kalahari Desert, where until recently, most other groups couldn't or wouldn't.

Actually the biggest thing stopping Africa from feeding itself has been medical aid. When whitey brought quinine to Africa, blacks no longer needed sickle cell to help survive malaria. Disease had always kept blacks numbers low enough that single moms could feed any kids that survived with low hanging fruit. Mother nature came up with AIDS & Obola to keep black numbers down but whitey keeps sending meds.

    Steve,
I just cannot take this thesis seriously.

Firstly the nations from which the so-called ‘migrants’ are pouring from, eg, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, various west African states, have done precious little in selling off agricultural land – indeed what little they have got – to foreigners.

The answer to the ‘migrant’ crisis is pure and simple. Sorry but I regard any so-called ‘intellectualism’ at finding ‘deeper reasons’ that are just not there, as obfuscation for the sake of obfuscation, and thus positively evil in that they seek to blind the public to the obvious – and the obvious remedy.
The obvious, true, real and only cause is that the shitheads who run the EU *insist* on applying the out-of-date and thoroughly abused 1951 Geneva refugee Convention, which *insists* on signatories granting ‘asylum’ to anyone who can utter that word. And, oh, the free provision of council housed etc, does nothing to help.

Areas start as no go zones. Young professionals enter. The next generation of young professionals are priced out by old professionals who are then priced out by foreign money and the place becomes a ghost town.

All the while, except in the original best areas, what can only be described as third world peasant transplants continue to live in social housing in the same manner as they were accustomed to in Bangladesh or wherever.

    Guess who has the children?

The largest Chinese land purchase/lease in Africa is a rice farm in Mozambique of up to 20,000 hectacres but the idea is to sign local farmers up for contract farming (fertilizers, seeds, tractors, etc. provided in exchange for value of crop produced minus the cost of what was provided). The Mozambique deal is unique as no other Chinese agricultural investments in Africa involve a transfer of land anywhere near that size.

The short answer is no. Chinese are not pushing Africans out of Africa by driving Africans out of scarce land. However, if the aggregate of Chinese investments and road/telecom construction increases growth in Africa by 2-3% every year that creates more people and households every year that can comb together the 5-10,000 dollars to pay for the journey across the Mediterranean.

So the complex answer is yes. Chinese are indirectly enabling Africans to Europe.

  16. From Galton’s letter of 1873:

The opinion of the public on the real worth of the Negro race has halted between the extreme views which have been long and loudly proclaimed. It refuses to follow those of the early abolitionists, that all the barbarities in Africa are to be traced to the effects of a foreign slave trade, because travelers continually speak of similar barbarities existing in regions to which the slave trade has not penetrated…. On the other hand, … there are notorious instances of negroes possessing high intelligence and culture, some of whom acquire large fortunes in commerce, and others become considerable men in other walks of life. The truth appears to be that individuals of the mental caliber I have just described are much more exceptional in the negro than in the Anglo-Saxon race, and that average negroes possess too little intellect, self-reliance, and self-control to make it possible for them to sustain the burden of any respectable form of civilization without a large measure of external guidance and support.

As Steve has pointed out many times, each generation tends to think that it is the first generation to grapple with these issues, but exactly the same debate was raging 142 years ago.

And 142 years of uplift and activism has changed the basic facts little. But! If goodthinking people can just think the right thoughts fervently enough, and hate the right people ardently enough, and spend extravagantly enough, everything will change. This time, everything will be different if we just Fix The Schools!

The Narrative is triangulating us out of existence.

True, but don't give up. I see four massive counter points trends strength.

1: Biological ethnic group voting: Pro immigration politicians boast about how the increased black+hispanic electorate will vote for more immigration. This is a blatant admission that people are voting for their biological ethnic groups which is an overwhelmingly logical justification for ethnic groups to resist cross ethnic immigration or at least maintain separate voting pools by ethnicity. Even the Open Borders crowd says they don't advocate granting foreigners voting rights and universal suffrage may need to be forfeited.

2: The Open Borders crowd's arguments are intellectually dishonest. This will trigger blowback; even in academia. The Open Borders crowd argues that the cost of immigration is zero and that accepting foreigners is not an act of charity at all, immigration does not increase crime (ever), and has positive economic effects (always). There are absolutely specific cases of immigration where the nativists/reactionaries resisted and were proven wrong and it really turned out to be a win-win situation. But there are some obvious cases where immigration did lead to a complete disaster, with crime economic disasters and just grief all around. I honestly believe even the open borders proponents themselves know they are lying. This will really trigger a blowback.

3: Inevitable Demise of Dominant Narrative. The dominant views on race and equality are ridiculous, illogical, conflicting, and hypocritical in many ways. Not just to this fringe crowd, but to regular people of all races and all ages. Most normal people don't obsess over this stuff like this crowd, but even regular people realize that the dominant narrative is wrong. It simply can't last, it will come crashing down. Hard.

4: Focus on Whites. This is a subset of #3, but the Narrative on racism is almost universally focused on whites. Most people know that everyone is racist. Japan is outrageously racist: even nice high skill Euro white people are welcome as tourists, but definitely not as permanent residents to live and raise families. Can you imagine millions of sub-saharan blacks and arabs establishing permanent residence in Japan?!? Same with Israel, China, South America, the middle east, intra conflicts within Muslims, Europeans, etc. The way the dominant political discussion has been focused specifically on whites can't last.

  18. 95 % of the arable land in Mozambique was not cultivated. It was suggested the exiled white farmers from Zimbabwe [Rhodesia] could migrate to Mozambique and set up commercial farms. To what extent that occurred I am not sure but it was a good idea for all parties. NOW the Chinese and other industrial agriculture enterprises are setting up shop in the continent and will not have the same concerns as would the exiled whitey farmer from Zimbabwe [Rhodesia].

Supposedly - yes, I know it's a very very difficult concept to grasp these days - the 'defence of the state' was the *prime* remit of the nation's government. Something above and beyond and quite separate from the seeking of private profit.

  21. “a farm population … driven to emigrate by insiders cashing in on the value of the land. The most famous example were the Enclosures in Britain”: that may be true of the early enclosures, but it’s clearly untrue of the Parliamentary Enclosures of the 18th and 19th centuries. Which makes me wonder to what extent it’s true of the earlier ones too; anyway, it made fine agitprop in the 19th and early 20th century.

“Another famous instance was the Highland Clearances in Scotland”: some of the clearances were involuntary, and a few were rather nasty, though of course not remotely comparable to the clearing of Indian tribes from much of the USA. But the bulk of the people who left the Highlands did so voluntarily. Why? Well, would you choose to make a living from a few cattle and the attempt to grow grain in the Highlands, when there were industrial jobs and agricultural opportunities elsewhere? Have you seen the bloody Highlands?

Basically too poor to marry or have children. Thus socialism (taking care of poors) is major problem for modern sociaties.

To practice socialism, you end up with two kinds of situations. 1. When you only want to take care your own kind of people, you end up with national socialism (NAZI). Germany has tried hard to educate their new generation about problematic nature of NAZI. 2. Taking care of all poor people regardless of types, you end up with communism system.

At end both tried and failed.

True capitalism might be brutal. But it is obviously appropriate for the darwin nature of animal kindom. Individuals with low end of ability got extinction through reduced reproduction (low marriage, low number of offsprings). People of high ability filled the gap through downward social mobility.

The Guardian -- Fred Pearce: Land grabbing has more of an impact on the world's poor than climate change

At the moment, for Europe it is important -- vital -- to stop what is happening now -- not to analyze the reasons for it (albeit this is not unimportant). Direct action is required -- not a lot of thinking and analyzing and debating.

Already Germany expects two cities the size of Leipzig to arrive this year (and this number will probably rise) -- all 3rd world muslims and Africans.

    Denmark -- Dänemark -- Asylanten-integration gescheitert

Attempts to integrate refugees and asylum seekers in Denmark have completely failed (what a surprise).

Drei von vier Flüchtlingen, die in den frühen 2000er Jahren nach Dänemark kamen, sind zehn Jahre später arbeitslos.

75% of those who arrived 10 or more years ago are still unemployed. They are unemployable, a permanent burden on taxpayers -- a free life in a nice, white country.

    Replies: @bossel

Utter nonsense. Most immigrants to Germany are from Europe. Even if you count refugees (asylum seekers) alone, it doesn’t hold water. Single biggest group of refugees is from Syria, but more than a 3rd of refugees in Germany are from the Balkans (most of which will probably be sent back there, since the German government considers the Balkans safe).

For the original topic, that’s probably nonsense, too. I wait for the statistics to convince me otherwise. Most of the current migrants seem to be rather well off, considering the amount of money they have to pay to the traffickers. Where would subsistence farmers get that money from (unless they get paid quite some for being driven from their land, but I haven’t heard anything about that)?

  50. My favorite African land grab story is one between Daewoo (South Korean Company) and Madagascar. Daewoo’s attempt at creating massive farmland for export to Korea led to coup d’etat in the island nation.

    http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/7e133310-13ba-11de-9e32-0000779fd2ac.html#axzz3kKbbdUH1

South Korea’s project to transform Madagascar into its breadbasket, branded by some as neo-colonial, came to an abrupt end on Wednesday when the Indian Ocean island’s new president said he would shelve the plan.

Daewoo Logistic’s deal to lease a huge tract of farmland, half the size of Belgium, to grow food crops to send back to Seoul was a source of popular resentment that contributed to the fall of Marc Ravalomanana, the former president.

Andry Rajoelina, who was declared president by the military and constitutional court after months of demonstrations and who will be formally sworn in on Saturday, said that Daewoo’s plan was “cancelled”.

….The revelation of the plan was the catalyst that turned smouldering dissatisfaction with the rule of Mr Ravalomanana into the rebellion that ousted him on Tuesday.

Once early prospecting of land became public, outrage at the president’s perceived use of political office to further his own business interests changed gear, said a well-connected Malagasy, who asked not to be named. “It was the news that said Daewoo expected to pay nothing for the land that accelerated the [political] trouble,” he added.

….The South Korean company initially said it had secured a lease for 99 years for about 1.3m hectares and expected to pay nothing as a rent, although it later said it was still in negotiations with Mr Ravalomanana’s former government.

The company floated the plan in January to lease 900,000 hectares of land with infrastructure investments worth $2bn (€1.5bn, £1.4bn). The plan suggested Daewoo could create up to 45,000 jobs.

Seoul’s long-term target was to import up to half its corn needs, cutting its dependence on the US, Argentina and Brazil. South Korea is the world’s fourth largest corn importer.

  51. Anon • Disclaimer says:

You don’t need direct sales of land to push peasants off their plots. All you need is a population increase of more than 2 kids per family and little access to extra capital. If a farmer has 4 sons and he’s living on plot of land that produces only enough food to feed those kids, his wife, and himself, that land will not produce enough for new families to live on once it’s inherited and divided up between the four sons. If each son marries and also has four children, that land cannot produce enough food to feed those 24 people. It’s pure and simple math and Malthus.

In other words, the four sons have no access to ‘affordable family formation.’ What they need is extra capital so they can buy large enough farms of their own. This means they have to go to the city and find non-farm jobs to accumulate that capital. But if all the area’s farmland prices are being pushed up by Chinese buying, it’s going to take a much longer time than normal for any of those sons to save up enough money from a city job to buy farmland.

Africans are godawful at creating jobs in their cities, so with no work available, they choose to migrate to Europe and the US instead.

In a sense, what’s happening to Africa is much like the demographic change that took place in the US before and after WWI. Before, most Americans lived on farms. A great migration took place in the 1920s in which waves of young workers headed for the cities, and for the first time the US no longer became a nation of farmers, but middle-class workers.

Unfortunately, this will not be duplicated in Africa. The African tolerance of bribery and corruption drains off the excess capital that could be used to create jobs. Africans also can’t seem to build business larger than a hot dog stand that actually work. Being a hardworking, high-IQ CEO isn’t anywhere near close enough to make a large-scale company work. The blunt fact is that except for the janitors, everyone working a white-collar job in a large company has to be above average in IQ. Africa doesn’t have the intellectual capital to staff large-scale companies the way the West does.

Africa does, however, possess an outlet. Dumb liberals in Western countries who are oblivious to the economic effect of a massive leech population. It was a bad idea to provide Africans with seeds that produce higher plant yields. What the West should have given them was birth-control pills and condoms.

It is beyond crazy that white liberals don’t understand that their kids can’t find jobs or cheap housing in US cities anymore because there are too many foreigners competing with those kids for entry-level jobs, and immigrants are taking over all the cheaper housing. Those foreigners that can’t find jobs end up on welfare and drive up everyone’s taxes.

White liberals don’t understand that foreign immigration produces a ton of people who can’t afford to pay for their own medical care and who increase the crime rate and shove up the costs of crime, such as payments needed for incarceration, providing for a police force, etc. All these costs come right out the taxes–and drive up the medical insurance rates–of white liberals, including the struggling young ones, as well as placing a burden on the paycheck of every other worker.

White liberals keep on stupidly voting to create unaffordable family formation for their own selves, which is suicide. Liberals either aren’t smart enough to see the ripple effect, or else their determined clinging to their own ideological biases blinds them.

If they are genetically closer to Iranians, why don't Eritreans, Ethiopians, and Somalis resemble Iranians in phenotype?

True that *current* SSA migration is less subsistence farmer, more Eritrea/Sudan/Somalia failed states and, increasingly, west Africans with the wherewithal to cross the sahara into Libya. I’d place the land grabs in the same bin as africa’s fecundity issues: not yet a major motivator for out-migration but one boiling on the horizon. The numbers ca. 2015 may not reflect the dynamic, but could blowing the lid off Libya, the subsequent mass migrations and EU capitulation be something the Davos crowd missed? Bleeds off excess African population AND weakens European ethnic cohesion, social safety nets, trade unions, and the like. Win-win to our hostile elite.

It seems the modern dash for Africa began in earnest after the 2009 financial market crash. China looked for a way to repatriate the trillions of treasury notes it held (before their value could plummet) and building cities upon cities, buying Australian and SE Asian resources wasn’t adequate. Other lesser players joined as well (Korea, India, Gulf states) and now the bloated US market. A process very much in its beginnings.

I work for a big green and yellow agricultural equipment company. We do not sell small plows and small tractors for small holders anymore. We sell monster machines, goliath machines. Each one replaces dozens and dozens and dozens of 1900-era farmers. We and countless other Ag equipment manufacturers eliminate the need for over 95% of farmers in China, Africa, and Asia.

The USA and Europe were conquered decades ago. Now it is Asia's, China's and Africa's turn. The cities in these countries will turn into huge violent ghettoes filled with rural refugees who will then migrate to Europe and the Anglosphere. There is no place left to go.

Burgeoning industrialization absorbed them, in part because the skills needed in the factories weren't all that great nor all that different than what a farm worker had. Globalization has reversed American industrialization and created a large, truly surplus (not Marx's lumpenprolitariat) worker population. A significant fraction of China's rural population moved to industrializing cities, also.

Already Germany expects two cities the size of Leipzig to arrive this year (and this number will probably rise) — all 3rd world muslims and Africans.

  72. Steve, I would say that Chinese land grabs in Africa are NOT responsible for first urbanization and then mass movements of Africans to Europe.

Chinese investment in Africa consists of building roads, bridges, dams, and particularly railways as a way to pump up manufacturing exports and domestic employment and at the same time get African patronage and IOUs, generally with low interest financing from Chinese banks. The other major sort of investment is in mining, with the whole Benny Steinmetz affair in Guinea being typical. [Rio Tinto had the iron mining concession in some remote area mostly unpopulated, Benny Steinmetz got the concession handed to him and sold it onto Vale, the Brazilian mining group, in likely a cut-out affair, the new President ousting the old one is prosecuting Steinmetz for corruption, the FBI is involved, etc. Vale was partners with the Chinese state mining company.]

Most of the movement of Africans to cities first, then Europe, is the process of urbanization which took place in SE Asia, China, Indonesia, India, and Latin America. Being a peasant is backbreaking work, land ownership is iffy at best, and there is a limited pool of young people in the sex market. Thus younger people move to the cities where work is less backbreaking and there are more people of the opposite sex.

Europe’s spineless refusal to keep out refugees is not a Triple Bankshot, see my comment there, but Whiskey’s Law and the second corollary.

Whiskey’s Law: Any group sufficiently highly educated, sufficiently highly urbanized, sufficiently socially isolated in a bubble admitting only those highly educated and urbanized, will blindly adhere to religious principles of diversity and PC and anti-White behavior.

First Corollary: Any elite that exists in a small country that is isolated and under immediate threat from mass immigration to the point that immigrants could oust them from leadership in a few years, will be anti-mass immigration.

Second Corollary: any elite in a big country with a lot of margin for mass immigration before they are supplanted by immigrant leaders will be pro-immigration. Thus Hungary, Serbia, and Israel are anti-immigration while Germany, Italy, and France are not.

  73. Anything less than a third A’s means there are more than two not-A’s for every A. I would call that a small minority. I would not call it insignificant, which is why I didn’t. Remember the context: the hypothesis is that the flood of migration to Europe is ‘driven by land grabs in [sub-Saharan] Africa’. If in fact much less than half the migration is from that region (let alone driven by [non-existent] Chinese land grabs), the hypothesis is falsified.

That would depend on who "you" are. Foreign purchases of land are easiest to facilitate in developed countries, and most difficult to carry out in the least developed countries. Economic autarky is a nifty theory, but hermits seldom found companies employing thousands of people. North Korea's autarky is a declaration that the Kim dynasty controls the country's destiny. The problem for the average North Korean is that he does not control his own destiny, and it's small comfort to hear from the Kims that his malnutrition is the price of keeping foreign exploiters at bay. Autarky can be great for some elites. It's generally less beneficial for the hoi polloi.

The short version is that as observed by academics, neoliberal policies are giving many African men the short end of the stick sexually. Those outside of the the export/goverment/commercial triad, all paid via typically exports of raw materials, are squeezed economically and typically sexually. The top 20% economically and then the top 10% sort of sexy bad boys get access then the rest are shit out of luck.

So they hit the road. Heck it also happens here. Western men squeezed head to Latin America, Philippines, Eastern Europe. Asian and Latin men come to America.

It’s this lonely game of musical chairs played by the bottom rung of men.

  81. Come on, people. There is only one problem, over population. But the elites haven’t figured out a way to make money off shrinking the population. So, they aren’t interested in a one child policy for Africa, which is what it needed. The Africans, unlike the Chinese, will never control themselves, so it will have to be done for them. Whatever the European and Chinese come up with will certainly be more humane than what the Africans themselves come up with. So, if we are really the humanitarians we say we are, we need to send more birth control. Every woman needs to be sterilized after her first child if she cannot pay a very high fee.

Courtesy of the wikipedia I learn there is something called land grabbing:

“…Land grabbing is the contentious issue of large-scale land acquisitions: the buying or leasing of large pieces of land in developing countries, by domestic and transnational companies, governments, and individuals. …

…primarily refers to large-scale land acquisitions following the 2007-2008 world food price crisis. …

…defined as very large-scale land acquisitions, either buying or leasing, in developing countries. The size of the land deal is multiples of 100,000 hectares (240,000 acres)…

…has become a catch-all to describe… the current trend towards large scale (trans)national commercial land transactions…

…arrive at a ballpark of 20-60 million hectares. Given that total global farmland takes up just over 4 billion hectares… these acquisitions could equate to around 1 per cent of global farmland. However, in practice, land acquired may not have previously been used as farmland…

    …largest destination countries include

Brazil with 11 per cent by land area
    Sudan with 10 per cent
Madagascar, the Philippines and Ethiopia with 8 per cent each
    Mozambique with 7 per cent
    Indonesia with 6 per cent.

…between October 2008 and August 2009 alone, with two-thirds of demanded land concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa…

…Investment in land often takes the form of long-term leases, as opposed to outright purchases, of land. These leases often range between 25 and 99 years…

So it’s not the biggest problem in the world yet, but it is something starting to happen, including in Sub-Saharan Africa. One might say vultures are circling.

One of the problems might be that in much of the world there is a weak concept of land ownership. For instance I think in India, legal ownership of land is still overall “a big mess” because there are no good records. A lot of places are likely much worse.

…In a 2003 study, the World Bank estimated that only between 2 and 10 percent of total land in Africa is formally tenured. Much of the lack of private ownership is due to government ownership of land…

…there is a knowledge gap between investors and local populations regarding the land acquisition process…

…One study by the IIED concluded that guidelines for compensation given to displaced villagers in Ethiopia and Ghana was insufficient to restore livelihoods lost through dislocation…

…a former AIG partner named Philippe Heilberg… planning to invest in 800,000 ha of land in partnership with many of South Sudan’s top generals… “the whole place is like one big mafia — and I’m like a mafia head.”…”

Well, to support this theory, we’re going to need millions of examples

It almost doesn't matter; the narrative has a life of its own. They are either refugees from a civil war of the West's creation; or they are economic refugees via Western policy; or they are big hearted people with awesome skills who are coming to increase our GDP.

The Narrative is triangulating us out of existence.

    Replies: @Massimo Heitor

The Narrative is triangulating us out of existence.

True, but don’t give up.

Even the Open Borders crowd says they don’t advocate granting foreigners voting rights and universal suffrage may need to be forfeited.

2: The Open Borders crowd’s arguments are intellectually dishonest.

Most normal people don’t obsess over this stuff like this crowd, but even regular people realize that the dominant narrative is wrong. It simply can’t last, it will come crashing down.

The way the dominant political discussion has been focused specifically on whites can’t last.

  89. This seems like a weak conspiracy theory. There is tons of open land in Africa. And the immigration seems driven not for basic safety and land, but for the most prosperous nations on Earth with generous social safety nets. They don’t want a peaceful humble existence in some mediocre country. I don’t necessarily blame them.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overseas_Chinese#Country_statistics

Most are in construction and engineering or run food stores and other kinds of retail. It’s a lot of people but considering Africa has one billion people, it’s a drop in the bucket population-wise. And since all migrants have an economic role in their country of destination, I don’t think the Chinese displace Africans out of the country (displacing natives from running food stores but not out of the country). Rather the Chinese presence has increased overall commercial activity and commercial opportunities for all.

It’s pretty apparent that the net effect of Chinese migrants in Africa is positive economically and socially. However, both left and right wingers (like Steve) revert to these post-colonial critical analysis type comments (e.g. big agriculture companies are exploiters and a cause of structural poverty) when talking about the Chinese in Africa. Goes to show that a sense of competition (ie Africa although maligned is still a traditional sphere of influence for the West and is being lost to a newcomer) against a rival power causes bad, weak analysis.

Any thoughts on Obama's renaming Mt. McKinley by edict? I find it interesting that the press is spinning this as if the mountain were getting back its "original" name. (There are many Alaska Native languages; Denali is taken from one of the local Athabaskan languages.)

There are Alaskans who, for whatever reason, have wanted to see this change for a long time, but this former Alaskan thinks it's pretty silly.

Makes me think of how the first anthropologists into Africa called those hunter-gathers the original affluent society, since they only had to "work" a few hours a week killing big game to survive. The rest of life was oh so easy. Which recalls Pat Moynihan's deafening remonstration regarding Africa's inability to feed itself, considering that growing food is the first thing we learned to do when we "came down out of the trees." City life ill-fits their proclivities. Africa simply can't feed itself well enough. Foreign aid should be per herds of cattle.

Makes me think of how the first anthropologists into Africa called those hunter-gathers the original affluent society

While apparently, those are more time-consuming ways to make a living, they can also support larger populations and this has led to competition with hunter-gatherers who’ve suffered increasing territorial marginalization to the point where there are very few of them left today. In some cases they’ve joined the other team, but in many cases they’ve actually died out. It’s definitely not the hunter-gatherers whose population is exploding in Africa today.

What leisure time the !Kung enjoy is partly thanks to their lifestyle’s low overhead. They live in small groups and have very few personal possessions. They don’t require as many resources as most other people and that’s why they’ve been able to survive for so long in an extreme environment like the Kalahari Desert, where until recently, most other groups couldn’t or wouldn’t.

Yea that fits. We watched an old film on the affable bushmen. After the hunt they would sit around smoking like chimneys some harsh root, pondering the strangeness of small signs, and the success that ensued. You had to like them. And the professor was a classic, dedicated to the Karl Marx t shirt that had ceased to fit him some time before. But one time he scorned the American underclass as "pathological."

  93. One last point:

Sailer and most of this crowd would sympathize with an individual noble black peasant from Africa over an obnoxious white layabout in Europe. The main goal of Open Borders is to boost millions of the former and knock down millions of the latter. In isolation, that’s great, and I suspect this crowd would support it in isolation.

Maybe mass immigration combined with a radically distinct form of governance would work.

If people in Africa + Asia really want European style civilization, there must be some model of immigration and governance where people can spread the civilization that people want to the people that want it and profit in that process.

Sorry, but there simply are not 'millions' of 'obnoxious white layabouts' in existence.

I know something like 50% of young Italians are out of work, but this is wholly and solely due to EU shitheadedness - and craven, Italian cowardice in kissing EU butt.

  94. “But now there are a billion Africans, so they have to be redomiciled somewhere if the Africa is to be most profitably exploited.”

Mark Krikorian has pointed out that much of what we’re seeing with regards to immigration is simply the old story of the rural people moving to the cities – except that whereas they once moved to cities in their own countries, they are now moving to cities in other countries, legally or illegally. These people are already being displaced. In their view if they are going to have to uproot, they might as well set down new roots in a place where they can get the most money, via work or welfare.

  95. “If people in Africa + Asia really want European style civilization, there must be some model of immigration and governance where people can spread the civilization that people want to the people that want it and profit in that process.”

Yes – it was called “colonialism,” and it is now considered one of the Western world’s great evils. It involved a minimal amount of immigration from the Western world to their colonies. Then the colonized peoples kicked us out, and now after kicking us out they’re demanding the right to live in our countries.

  96. “The american left, useful idiots that they are, see only the rear-view mirror of history and their own navels.”

Not sure about the land grab idea, but If I came up with such a stylish and succinct sentence I wouldn’t be anonymous about it.

Pack border security with hard nosed feminists and aggressive narcissistic gays and transsexuals (in other words try to be as offensive to Muslim and African sensibilities at the border as possible) and quietly discriminate against relatively attractive heterosexual women.

Promote more news stories about individual immigrants who have had a hard time in the West.

My favorite African land grab story is one between Daewoo (South Korean Company) and Madagascar. Daewoo's attempt at creating massive farmland for export to Korea led to coup d'etat in the island nation.

    http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/7e133310-13ba-11de-9e32-0000779fd2ac.html#axzz3kKbbdUH1

Andry Rajoelina, who was declared president by the military and constitutional court after months of demonstrations and who will be formally sworn in on Saturday, said that Daewoo’s plan was “cancelled”.

....The revelation of the plan was the catalyst that turned smouldering dissatisfaction with the rule of Mr Ravalomanana into the rebellion that ousted him on Tuesday.

Once early prospecting of land became public, outrage at the president’s perceived use of political office to further his own business interests changed gear, said a well-connected Malagasy, who asked not to be named. “It was the news that said Daewoo expected to pay nothing for the land that accelerated the [political] trouble,” he added.

....The South Korean company initially said it had secured a lease for 99 years for about 1.3m hectares and expected to pay nothing as a rent, although it later said it was still in negotiations with Mr Ravalomanana’s former government.

Further, China uses its own laborers for road construction, agricultural development, and the like. Where will Congo get the money to pay? From western aid most likely (and pathetically for the do-gooders out there). You can call it “economic growth” but like colonialism it’s not growth for most Africans, simply resource extraction. One project that was done by Chinese engineering firms was the East-West Expressway, an 8-lane road running along the entire coast of the country. Construction was completed in 2014 at a cost of 10 billion dollars. If there were no Chinese firms to do it than more expensive European firms would have done the work for maybe 12-13 billion dollars.

That’s a few billion a relatively poor country like Algeria saved on a very useful infrastructure project. Algerians should be grateful about the bargain they are getting.

My first thought was to look up how well Nemaha County did in Raj Chetty's Harvard-IRS database of upward mobility for 2500 counties from 1996-2000 to 2011-2012. Nemaha County was 4th best in the nation on Chetty's metric out of 2500 counties.

The Nebraska version of Nemaha County is so small (7k population) that it's not in Chetty's database. Re WaPo article on New Orleans refugees in Nebraska

They wrote that Auburn, NE has a population of 3200. There are about 8 or 9 members of that family that relocated. That's about 0.25% of the town's population, and they seemed to occupy the police quite a bit. Just think how much of an impact it would have been on Auburn if instead of that small number, they had received the equivalent of 1 percent of their population (32 refugees) or even more. After reading this it is easy to see how just a small percentage of residents like this can affect a community.

PS. What are they going to do now that they told their story to the WaPo? If they felt they weren't liked before, how do they think the residents of Auburn are going to react now?

Cheap chinese goods have flooded the African market and destroyed the few manufacturing that existed in these countries. They have also have destroyed the livelihood of skilled workers such as tailors, shoe cobblers, kitchenware makers etc.

More than anything though, Africans are leaving because of their corrupt governments and the general lack of know-how that keeps the foreign capital needed to build industry out . There are no jobs for the rural middle class, the urban poor and middle class, and the few jobs do not pay much.

The largest group of migrants are eritreans-they are leaving because they have been enslaved by their by their bizarre north korean-like government.

No, what has hindered the development of a domestic African textile industry is the massive sale, in Africa, of the cast-off secondhand clothing of Europeans and Americans, which is donated to 'charity' by these westerners.

Yes, one of the many reasons Africans are leaving is because of the Chinese-but it is not just the land grab.

There are almost no Kenyans illegal migration to Europe-it really does not take much economic development to keep Africans home.

Apart from the fact that, until surprisingly recently, subsaharan Africans ran around almost completely nude, save for such scraps of ‘bark cloth’ that covered modesty, they never ever in the entire long epochal history wore anything remotely resembling a shoe. No, what has hindered the development of a domestic African textile industry is the massive sale, in Africa, of the cast-off secondhand clothing of Europeans and Americans, which is donated to ‘charity’ by these westerners.

They wrote that Auburn, NE has a population of 3200. There are about 8 or 9 members of that family that relocated. That’s about 0.25% of the town’s population, and they seemed to occupy the police quite a bit.

If they felt they weren’t liked before, how do they think the residents of Auburn are going to react now?

And, yes, they have raised the living standards for the few(er) Africans needed to work on these farms with high investment and rationalized workflow processes.

Contracting to raise special soy beans for the Asian market is also happening in the United States. I once worked as the marketing representative for a mid-Western state. Taiwanese companies were queuing up to contract for the soy crops. However, the stubborn farmers refused. As one told me, “My granddaddy grew wheat … my daddy grew wheat … and I’m going to grow wheat!” Wow! That would depend on who “you” are. Foreign purchases of land are easiest to facilitate in developed countries, and most difficult to carry out in the least developed countries. Economic autarky is a nifty theory, but hermits seldom found companies employing thousands of people. North Korea’s autarky is a declaration that the Kim dynasty controls the country’s destiny. The problem for the average North Korean is that he does not control his own destiny, and it’s small comfort to hear from the Kims that his malnutrition is the price of keeping foreign exploiters at bay. Courtesy of the wikipedia I learn there is something called land grabbing:

"...Land grabbing is the contentious issue of large-scale land acquisitions: the buying or leasing of large pieces of land in developing countries, by domestic and transnational companies, governments, and individuals. ...

...primarily refers to large-scale land acquisitions following the 2007-2008 world food price crisis. ...

...defined as very large-scale land acquisitions, either buying or leasing, in developing countries. The size of the land deal is multiples of 100,000 hectares (240,000 acres)...

...has become a catch-all to describe... the current trend towards large scale (trans)national commercial land transactions...

...arrive at a ballpark of 20-60 million hectares. Given that total global farmland takes up just over 4 billion hectares... these acquisitions could equate to around 1 per cent of global farmland. However, in practice, land acquired may not have previously been used as farmland...

    ...largest destination countries include

Brazil with 11 per cent by land area
    Sudan with 10 per cent
Madagascar, the Philippines and Ethiopia with 8 per cent each
    Mozambique with 7 per cent
    Indonesia with 6 per cent.

...between October 2008 and August 2009 alone, with two-thirds of demanded land concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa...

...Investment in land often takes the form of long-term leases, as opposed to outright purchases, of land. These leases often range between 25 and 99 years...

So it's not the biggest problem in the world yet, but it is something starting to happen, including in Sub-Saharan Africa. One might say vultures are circling.

One of the problems might be that in much of the world there is a weak concept of land ownership. For instance I think in India, legal ownership of land is still overall "a big mess" because there are no good records. A lot of places are likely much worse.

...In a 2003 study, the World Bank estimated that only between 2 and 10 percent of total land in Africa is formally tenured. Much of the lack of private ownership is due to government ownership of land...

...there is a knowledge gap between investors and local populations regarding the land acquisition process...

...One study by the IIED concluded that guidelines for compensation given to displaced villagers in Ethiopia and Ghana was insufficient to restore livelihoods lost through dislocation...

...a former AIG partner named Philippe Heilberg... planning to invest in 800,000 ha of land in partnership with many of South Sudan's top generals... "the whole place is like one big mafia — and I'm like a mafia head."..."

I don’t know if Chinese land grabs have been a factor or not, but they wouldn’t be necessary, because economic development alone can be sufficient as it increases land values, which increases rents and can spur migration. The Chinese could come in, build a road, and leave, and that could be sufficient to raise the land value in the adjacent areas and raise the rents and spur migration. This is why there was significant European emigration in the period following the Industrial Revolution despite the great economic growth there.

So does that mean if Eritreans, Ethiopians, and Somalis took a DNA test, their results would reveal that they are zero percent Sub Saharan African and 100 percent Middle Eastern?

If they are genetically closer to Iranians, why don’t Eritreans, Ethiopians, and Somalis resemble Iranians in phenotype?

I doubt the Somali model Iman for example has ever been mistaken for an Iranian/Persian. If she had lived in the South during Jim Crow she would have been prohibited from drinking from Caucasoid only water fountains, Caucasoid only restrooms, Caucasoid only restaurants, Caucasoid only shopping stores, etc.

The Somali Iman would not look Caucasoid to the eyes of Southerners of Scotch Irish, English, and German ancestry. She would look like just another racially inferior Black woman to them.

The Somali Iman does not have a phenotype that can racially pass for Caucasoid in a Jim Crow South. She is no female version of Anatole Broyard. Iman’s marriage to David Bowie would have been considered Illegal during Jim Crow South.

  144. @Anon
You don't need direct sales of land to push peasants off their plots. All you need is a population increase of more than 2 kids per family and little access to extra capital. If a farmer has 4 sons and he's living on plot of land that produces only enough food to feed those kids, his wife, and himself, that land will not produce enough for new families to live on once it's inherited and divided up between the four sons. If each son marries and also has four children, that land cannot produce enough food to feed those 24 people. It's pure and simple math and Malthus.

In other words, the four sons have no access to 'affordable family formation.' What they need is extra capital so they can buy large enough farms of their own. This means they have to go to the city and find non-farm jobs to accumulate that capital. But if all the area's farmland prices are being pushed up by Chinese buying, it's going to take a much longer time than normal for any of those sons to save up enough money from a city job to buy farmland.

Africans are godawful at creating jobs in their cities, so with no work available, they choose to migrate to Europe and the US instead.

In a sense, what's happening to Africa is much like the demographic change that took place in the US before and after WWI.

Africans also can't seem to build business larger than a hot dog stand that actually work. Being a hardworking, high-IQ CEO isn't anywhere near close enough to make a large-scale company work. The blunt fact is that except for the janitors, everyone working a white-collar job in a large company has to be above average in IQ. Africa doesn't have the intellectual capital to staff large-scale companies the way the West does.

Africa does, however, possess an outlet. Dumb liberals in Western countries who are oblivious to the economic effect of a massive leech population. It was a bad idea to provide Africans with seeds that produce higher plant yields. What the West should have given them was birth-control pills and condoms.

It is beyond crazy that white liberals don't understand that their kids can't find jobs or cheap housing in US cities anymore because there are too many foreigners competing with those kids for entry-level jobs, and immigrants are taking over all the cheaper housing. Those foreigners that can't find jobs end up on welfare and drive up everyone's taxes.

White liberals don't understand that foreign immigration produces a ton of people who can't afford to pay for their own medical care and who increase the crime rate and shove up the costs of crime, such as payments needed for incarceration, providing for a police force, etc. All these costs come right out the taxes--and drive up the medical insurance rates--of white liberals, including the struggling young ones, as well as placing a burden on the paycheck of every other worker.

White liberals keep on stupidly voting to create unaffordable family formation for their own selves, which is suicide. Liberals either aren't smart enough to see the ripple effect, or else their determined clinging to their own ideological biases blinds them.

"Why do people on this site seem to obsess so much with Negros, when most of the people entering Europe are middle easterners and the few Blacks are mostly from Caucasoid countries like Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia (who are genetically closer to Iranians than congolese or Nigerians)."

I've kind of wondered about differences between the Horn of Africa types and the kind of blacks the United States has myself.

But Europe has a problem with middle easterners. The worst thing that could happen to Europe? Well it's not a new Caliphate or something with minarets over Berlin and some kind of call to prayer over loudspeakers.

Sub-saharan blacks are worse. There is literally nothing like them. It is truly astounding.

I'm going to guess you are european. Well come to the US sometime. Stay for a month or so and go to Detroit, go to St. Louis, go to Chicago, go to Memphis, New Orleans, Birmingham, Atlanta, Philadelphia.

Then make up your own mind. But don't go and do touristy things. Just walk around the city and observe. Talk to people.

    Then you'll see.

    Replies: @IBC, @BigGaySteve

Actually the biggest thing stopping Africa from feeding itself has been medical aid. When whitey brought quinine to Africa, blacks no longer needed sickle cell to help survive malaria. Disease had always kept blacks numbers low enough that single moms could feed any kids that survived with low hanging fruit. Mother nature came up with AIDS & Obola to keep black numbers down but whitey keeps sending meds.

  151. Is African Immigration to Europe Driven by Chinese Land Grabs?

    No.

#1 — Europeans superior IQ and conscientiousness, producing a much, much wealthier, much better ordered and more pleasant society to live in. Generous welfare states, provide an easy rich reward. And the reigning feminized PC, multiculturalism has sapped European will to keep foreigners out, allowing Africans to invade a ripe soft target.

    A distant #2: African overpopulation.

    Everything else is noise.

At least western capitalism has a human face; the Chinese are only out to exploit us."

In order to help the Chinese colonize prime African lands the Europeans will have to take in 200 million Africans in the next 20 years. This will never happen. Prime Rhodesian crop land awaits Chinese mechanized agriculture. Cool and at a high elevation. Good luck transplanting 5 million Zimbabweans (one third the population) to Europe.

Pretty easy entryism ,using fiat reserve banking& socializing their failures. This concept is why a small number of schools can remake the entire educational and judicial institution of 300 million people. Probably 150 law professors (those at the best 5 or so) educate the majority of law professors and federal judges throughout the country. Control those 5 schools, and you control the judiciary for everyone in the United States (and, as mentioned, this is how academia was remade as well). 25 mentors from a Harvard professor/law professor go on to teach at 25 schools. 25 mentors from Iowa State go on to be marginally- or un-employed.

  156. It all comes down to this: there are those who are concerned about their posterity- that is, what life will be like for their descendants in 200 years- and those who don’t. It really is simple as that. All other arguments stem from it. If you can get someone to be really honest on that question, you can save yourself a lot of time.

I never heard of the Bonniers before. From Wikipedia I see they've been in Sweden for almost 200 years, and that of their two living scions one is a novelist and one is a Catholic priest.

The family as a whole remain major shareholders in a prominent tabloid whose politics are anti-Israel (among other leftist causes). The extent of their identification with the Jewish religion or the Jewish people is hard to ascertain, but there's no Bonnier this or that (schools, university buildings, hospitals, etc) in Israel -- which would be a pretty good litmus test for wealthy diaspora Jews, if they identify as Jews. My money is on most of the Bonniers having converted to Christianity at least three generations ago (though if you can find evidence to the contrary I'd be interested).

So all in all, they seem to be, more or less, a Swedish version of the Sultzbergers, except with even deeper roots in their adopted homeland.

Identifying the Bonniers with the grand international Jewish anti-Aryan conspiracy therefore seems like a huge stretch. But reading iSteve has taught me that there are people for whom that conspiracy is so axiomatic that every conceivable fact about the world constitutes evidence in favor.

  162. I’m convinced that the naval forces of the various E.U. member states (not just the Southern European states, but including participation from the British, Dutch, and likely the Germans too), will shut down the Mediterranean, for the purposes of mass immigration, sometime in the next year or so. Unfortunately, the belief that nothing will be done, and that everything will just keep getting worse & worse, presumably until we are extinct, seems to be very important to a lot of the people one meets in a patriotic milieu such as this. Such 24/7 defeatism is neither realistic, nor helpful.

The U.S. Navy & Coast Guard doesn’t permit the Haitian populace to decamp en masse to Florida, either. The Europeans will act too, before very much longer.

    Steve,
I just cannot take this thesis seriously.

Firstly the nations from which the so-called 'migrants' are pouring from, eg, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, various west African states, have done precious little in selling off agricultural land - indeed what little they have got - to foreigners.

The answer to the 'migrant' crisis is pure and simple. Sorry but I regard any so-called 'intellectualism' at finding 'deeper reasons' that are just not there, as obfuscation for the sake of obfuscation, and thus positively evil in that they seek to blind the public to the obvious - and the obvious remedy.
The obvious, true, real and only cause is that the shitheads who run the EU *insist* on applying the out-of-date and thoroughly abused 1951 Geneva refugee Convention, which *insists* on signatories granting 'asylum' to anyone who can utter that word. And, oh, the free provision of council housed etc, does nothing to help.
