iSteve commenter Jack D observes:

Andy Warhol didn’t get it quite right for the world we live in now. In future America, everyone (at least every white male) will be Emmanuel Goldstein for 15 minutes.

The War Nerd aka John Dolan is one of those Irish Americans who’s perpetually aggrieved about Britannia’s Huns and their oppression of fair Erin. He tries to make Orwell out to be an anti-Irish bigot, never mentioning his marriage to an O'Shaughnessy.
Dolan/War Nerd used to be great fun, but then he just became another leftist scold.
    , @Stolen Valor Detective
The War Nerd's essay on Orwell was a hilarious display of sophistry and outright fabrication. For instance, take his contention about Orwell's motives for fighting in the Spanish Civil War:

That’s what drew Orwell to Catalonia: the chance to help the men who were disemboweling priests in Barcelona and winding their guts around the altars. At last, a chance to smite the bloody Papists, the whore of Rome, Eric Blair’s oldest and dearest hate. Not since Cromwell had an English Papist-baiter had such an opportunity to torment the filthy priests. Naturally, Orwell was on the first ship he could catch. It wasn’t about socialism, it was about the chance to kill “a stinking RC” (Orwell’s description of Wyndham Lewis).

Wow, that's quite a bold assertion! What evidence does Mr. Dolan (or Brecher or whatever he's calling himself now) have for this shocking claim, you ask? Well, he provides these quotes of Orwell's:

Nearly all our anti-clerical feeling is directed at the poor, unoffending old C of E. If ever a word is raised against Rome, it is only some absurd tale about Jesuit intrigues or babies’ skeletons dug up from the floors of nunneries.

I had the great pleasure of reviewing [two pro-Catholic books]:It was the first time I have been able to lay the bastinado on a professional RC at any length. I have got a few square feet of garden, but have had rotten results owing to rain, slugs and mice.

I found Vacandard’s history of the Inquisition quite interesting:It appears:that the pendulum in Poe’s story was actually used:Torture [was dropped] in the middle of the 18th century, but the Pope did not formally abolish it until 1816. Our hedgehog has disappeared.

So, we see that Orwell believed that some criticisms of Roman Catholicism were invalid, that he once enjoyed critically reviewing two pro-Catholic books and that he once read a history of the Inquisition. An obvious syllogism from these facts to conclude that he was a deranged hater of Catholics who served in the Spanish Civil War for the sole purpose of murdering them!

Of course, if, unlike The War Nerd, you attempt to have some modicum of intellectual honesty and scholarly rigor in reaching conclusions, you could try the radical step of considering Orwell's own explanation of his motives. From Homage to Catalonia:

When I came to Spain, and for some time afterwards, I was not only uninterested in the political situation but unaware of it. I knew there was a war on, but I had no notion what kind of a war. If you had asked me why I had joined the militia I should have answered: ‘To fight against Fascism,’ and if you had asked me what I was fighting for, I should have answered: ‘Common decency.’ I had accepted the News Chronicle-New Statesman version of the war as the defence of civilization against a maniacal outbreak by an army of Colonel Blimps in the pay of Hitler.

Hmm....I'm not quite finding "rabid homicidal rage against Catholics" here...if only I had the refined intellect of The War Nerd, no doubt I could identify it...

Sadly, this laughable invention is not even the worst instance of intellectual malpractice in the essay, as it is followed by the brilliant deduction that Orwell hated the Irish because...the villain in 1984 was named O'Brien! Why, it's as simple as "all men are mortal, Socrates is a man, therefore Socrates is a mortal"!

Good question. I will answer your question. The real reasons are many, all bad. They include:

    a. many white girls are on drugs, and the black males get drugs free, from Doctors, using Medicaid cards, and use them to drug girls, and prey on them.
    b. Many white girls are brainwashed that going with blacks means they are "not racists."
    c. Many white girls are trapped by blacks, sexually assaulted, and end up marrying them, etc.

True. Becoming Emmanuel Goldstein seems to have little to do with race and everything to do with non-Wokeness. If you're a white male but you're Woke you're safe. If you're black but non-Woke you're a target.

Wokeness is not about race but political orthodoxy. And increasingly the most essential element of that political orthodoxy is to be fully onboard with the LGBTetc agenda. It's the LGBT crowd who are in charge today, not blacks.
  5. Has anyone charted all the known people who’ve been accused in the #metoo movement, from Weinstein’s lynching on, and determined how well Jewish males are represented in this matter?

    My favorite part:

Booker and Boteach met in October 1992, when a date stood Booker up.

He had arranged an evening out with a young woman, who was Jewish, and she asked to meet at a place he had never heard of: the L’Chaim Society.

When he arrived at the society’s second-floor office in the heart of Oxford, she wasn’t there. Debbie Boteach invited him to stay for a big dinner that was already underway, celebrating the Jewish holiday of Simhat Torah.

The table was packed with friends and students, and the only empty seat was next to Boteach. Booker said they immediately fell into “deep conversation.”

“A few hours later he and I were actually dancing on tables,” Boteach said. “The next day he came back. And for the next two years we saw each other nearly every day and studied together.”

Good imitation of Afro jive. And as you say, its repetitiveness is hypnotic. Black man voodoo. Just keep repeating the same nonsense and your victim will ultimately wilt. Just like Rap. Mumbo Jumbo.

Here's Wiki on black people's strange customs, which live on among us today....

"According to the 1803 Supplement to Encyclopædia Britannica Third Edition:

Mumbo Jumbo: A strange bugbear employed by the Pagan Mandingos for the purpose of keeping their women in subjection. Polygamy being allowed among these people, every man marries as many wives as he can conveniently maintain; and the consequence is, that family quarrels sometimes rise to such a height, that the husband's authority is not sufficient to restore peace among the ladies. On these occasions, the interposition of Mumbo Jumbo is called in; and it is always decisive. This strange minister of justice, who is either the husband himself, or some person instructed by him, disguised in a sort of masquerade habit, made of the bark of trees, and armed with the rod of public authority, announces his coming by loud and dismal screams in the woods near the town. He begins his pantomime at the approach of night; and as soon as it is dark, he enters the town, and proceeds to the Bentung or market-place, at which all the inhabitants immediately assemble.....the ceremony commences with songs and dances, which continue till midnight, about which time Mumbo fixes on the offender. This unfortunate victim being thereupon immediately seized, is stripped naked, tied to a post, and severely scourged with Mumbo's rod, amidst the shouts and derision of the whole assembly; and it is remarkable, that the rest of the women are the loudest in their exclamations on this occasion against their unhappy sister. Daylight puts an end to this indecent and unmanly revel....That the women are deluded seems evident; for Mr. Park assures us, that the dress of Mumbo is suffered to hang from a tree at the entrance of each town; which would hardly be the case if the women were not persuaded that it is the dress of some supernatural being."

Good imitation of Afro jive. And as you say, its repetitiveness is hypnotic. Black man voodoo. Just keep repeating the same nonsense and your victim will ultimately wilt. Just like Rap. Mumbo Jumbo.

Here’s Wiki on black people’s strange customs, which live on among us today….

“According to the 1803 Supplement to Encyclopædia Britannica Third Edition:

Mumbo Jumbo: A strange bugbear employed by the Pagan Mandingos for the purpose of keeping their women in subjection. Polygamy being allowed among these people, every man marries as many wives as he can conveniently maintain; and the consequence is, that family quarrels sometimes rise to such a height, that the husband’s authority is not sufficient to restore peace among the ladies. He begins his pantomime at the approach of night; and as soon as it is dark, he enters the town, and proceeds to the Bentung or market-place, at which all the inhabitants immediately assemble…..the ceremony commences with songs and dances, which continue till midnight, about which time Mumbo fixes on the offender. This unfortunate victim being thereupon immediately seized, is stripped naked, tied to a post, and severely scourged with Mumbo’s rod, amidst the shouts and derision of the whole assembly; and it is remarkable, that the rest of the women are the loudest in their exclamations on this occasion against their unhappy sister. Daylight puts an end to this indecent and unmanly revel….That the women are deluded seems evident; for Mr. Park assures us, that the dress of Mumbo is suffered to hang from a tree at the entrance of each town; which would hardly be the case if the women were not persuaded that it is the dress of some supernatural being.”

I can't be sure whether you're being snippy or not. Blair/Orwell was an Englishman of his time; he had his biases to be sure, but he had his clear-sightedness (Wigan Pier, Shooting an Elephant) too. His ideas about the Irish are as silly as are all his other non-prophetic non-Blakean thoughts.

The problem, as it were, with Orwell was that he was two things: one was, he was a very honest, clear-eyed writer of his times, on par with John Steinbeck and Eugene O'Neill and Evelyn Waugh and Bernard Shaw, and a victim of all the common prejudices n'importe quoi.

His second problem was that, through no fault of his own, he was touched and possessed by the Holy Ghost. "1984" and "Animal Farm" are works of prophetic inspiration, the most important works of fiction of our time, despite being of a mediocre literary standing. They are truer than True, it can't be helped, and they are badly written, it also can't be helped. When you are called upon to speak in tongues, you're not accountable for your grammar.

Trust me, I am a literary aesthete, and I will tell you without reservation that the most important work of literary fiction in our time, for almost infinite reasons, is the "Night-town" chapter of Joyce's "Ulysses" ( much of the rest of the book can bugger off into its obscurantist nutcase bed-- we can survive with "Penelope" and "Aeolus" and "Cyclops")

But it doesn't have the political immediacy and urgency of Orwell. (Actually it does but you need a friggin decoder ring to see why, so the question is pointless on a blog)

But to get back to the point... Orwell vs. the Irish. Hmm. The early chapters of Ulysses shed some light on that, but, absent the post-colonialist angle, who cares.

The War Nerd’s take on that crappy novel was correct.

The War Nerd’s essay on Orwell was a hilarious display of sophistry and outright fabrication. For instance, take his contention about Orwell’s motives for fighting in the Spanish Civil War:

That’s what drew Orwell to Catalonia: the chance to help the men who were disemboweling priests in Barcelona and winding their guts around the altars. At last, a chance to smite the bloody Papists, the whore of Rome, Eric Blair’s oldest and dearest hate. Not since Cromwell had an English Papist-baiter had such an opportunity to torment the filthy priests. Naturally, Orwell was on the first ship he could catch. It wasn’t about socialism, it was about the chance to kill “a stinking RC” (Orwell’s description of Wyndham Lewis).

Wow, that’s quite a bold assertion! What evidence does Mr. Dolan (or Brecher or whatever he’s calling himself now) have for this shocking claim, you ask? Well, he provides these quotes of Orwell’s:

Of course, if, unlike The War Nerd, you attempt to have some modicum of intellectual honesty and scholarly rigor in reaching conclusions, you could try the radical step of considering Orwell’s own explanation of his motives.

Hmm….I’m not quite finding “rabid homicidal rage against Catholics” here…if only I had the refined intellect of The War Nerd, no doubt I could identify it…

Sadly, this laughable invention is not even the worst instance of intellectual malpractice in the essay, as it is followed by the brilliant deduction that Orwell hated the Irish because…the villain in 1984 was named O’Brien! Why, it’s as simple as “all men are mortal, Socrates is a man, therefore Socrates is a mortal”!

"The War Nerd’s essay on Orwell was a hilarious display of sophistry and outright fabrication"

And yours are a sorry display of misdirection and non sequiturs. What does the allegation that he was "touched and possessed by the Holy Ghost...[and wrote] works of prophetic inspiration" have to do with the question of whether he was anti-Catholic? It's well and good that Orwell was prophetically clear-eyed about some things, but people are complicated, and expertise in one subject doesn't preclude stupidity in others.

If WarNerd's evidence of Orwell's anti-Catholicism isn't enough to persuade you, a simple internet search can give you plenty more

Orwell stated that rather than loving God as he was enjoined to do, he "hated him, just as I hated Jesus."...Orwell's antireligious stance led him to the astounding proposition that "the common people are without definite religious belief, and have been so for centuries." His antireligious stance was especially severe regarding "those stinking Catholics"

    Or else,

With his penchant for seeing every question through a political eye, Orwell fastened upon what he discerned as a marked pro-fascist streak within the Church..drew attention to the visceral loathing which Catholic writers felt for atheistic communism...Orwell, then, presented Catholics as either stupid or blinkered, dishonest or self-deceived.

    Or maybe this

In 1931, he explained to Christopher Hollis...why he regularly read the Catholic press: "I like to see what the enemy is up to"

Again, feel free to search for yourself. Clearly, many who read this site think such opinions do not go far enough, and will cheer you on on that basis alone. But regardless of how much you might hate Catholics or WarNerd yourself, don't try and pretend he soft-pedaled Orwell's opinions on the matter, regardless of what other reasons he might have had for joining the Republican cause.
    , @Anon
Orwell/Blair just wanted to fight in a war, any war. He was too young to fight in WWI, and as a policeman in Burma was surrounded by older men who looked down on him for his lack of military experience. We can imagine how that irritated him. It was probably one of the reasons he quit the job.

So, we see that Orwell believed that some criticisms of Roman Catholicism were invalid, that he once enjoyed critically reviewing two pro-Catholic books and that he once read a history of the Inquisition.

Would the “Mr. Park” be Mumgo Park?

A more indefensible assertion you could not make, sir, than the comparison of Celts and Negroes with regard to their relative contributions to civilisation.

You seem to conflate the Irish with all Celts, significant because while one may argue Irish monasteries did not preserve civilisation, it is much harder to argue that Scottish intellects didn't disproportionately create the industrial variety and later varieties:

James Watt, William Fairbairn, James Maxwell, Robert Watson-Watt, David Buick, George Bruce, James Goodfellow, John Napier, Adam Smith, William Dickson, James Hutton, Patrick Manson, Ronald Ross, Alexander Ogston, John Leslie, Thomas Latta, Alexander Wood, Robert Brown, Alexander Graham Bell, James Gregory, Thomas Graham, John Macintyre, John Haldane, George Forbes, William Murdoch, James Meikle, Ian Frazer, Robert Stirling, James Neilson, Alexander Fleming, William Playfair, James Irvine, John Macleod, Henry Faulds, William Ramsay, James Lindsay, Thomas Telford, John Baird, John McAdam, John Russell, Charles Wilson, William Leishman, Robert Thomson, John Dunlop, James Nasmyth, James Porteous, Philip Colomb, James Young, Robert Glover, James Simpson, Thomas Gibson, Ian Donald....

I've not by any means listed even all the most important such persons, and I'm weary of typing. If you don't know these names you should: many of them have doubtless saved your life or the life of someone you love, and others, like Frazer, yet will.

Still don't like the flavor of a Trotskyist villain named O'Brien, though. Who could imagine why?

Liked your comment Germ Theory, but can’t agree with you on Animal Farm. That’s a masterpiece.

It’s well and good that Orwell was prophetically clear-eyed about some things, but people are complicated, and expertise in one subject doesn’t preclude stupidity in others.

If WarNerd’s evidence of Orwell’s anti-Catholicism isn’t enough to persuade you, a simple internet search can give you plenty more

Orwell stated that rather than loving God as he was enjoined to do, he “hated him, just as I hated Jesus.”…Orwell’s antireligious stance led him to the astounding proposition that “the common people are without definite religious belief, and have been so for centuries.” His antireligious stance was especially severe regarding “those stinking Catholics”

    Or else,

With his penchant for seeing every question through a political eye, Orwell fastened upon what he discerned as a marked pro-fascist streak within the Church..drew attention to the visceral loathing which Catholic writers felt for atheistic communism…Orwell, then, presented Catholics as either stupid or blinkered, dishonest or self-deceived.

    Or maybe this

In 1931, he explained to Christopher Hollis…why he regularly read the Catholic press: “I like to see what the enemy is up to”

Black men aren't immune to 15-minute or longer hates: recently Bill Cosby, R. Kelly, and potentially MLK Jr. have received media hate. Of course, these men were all celebrities who had had it coming for quite a while. The misdeeds of random ordinary blacks (as chronicled by Paul Kersey) are much less interesting to mainstream media, for obvious reasons.

Black men aren’t immune to 15-minute or longer hates

True. Becoming Emmanuel Goldstein seems to have little to do with race and everything to do with non-Wokeness. If you’re a white male but you’re Woke you’re safe. If you’re black but non-Woke you’re a target.

Wokeness is not about race but political orthodoxy. And increasingly the most essential element of that political orthodoxy is to be fully onboard with the LGBTetc agenda. It’s the LGBT crowd who are in charge today, not blacks.

Leftists were atheists by definition. Catholics were NOT atheists by definition. (This is before the circle was squared with Liberation Theology). Therefore they were on opposite sides. This cut both ways - the Church was anti-Bolshevik.

I agree, but the Irish know about as well as any people what it truly means to be displaced, whether by bands of thuggish terrorists/invaders from the East (i.e. Vikings and Saxons) or deep state machinations based on the conviction that they are deplorables who should no longer exist and who should instead by replaced by more amenable immigrants. What's more, for the most part (up until recently, anyway) they've managed to resist fiercely.

That being the case, people on sites like these == in particular, Derbyshire -- come across as hypocrites (or as comically lacking in self-awareness as they accuse Jews of being) when they start chiming in about how the Irish whine too much and how they had it coming, and then complain about all the travails that whites must endure. The way that London traditionally regarded the Irish is pretty much exactly the way the elites in DC regard the flavorless and/or troublesome whites in flyover-countries who refuse admit that they, too, are a retrograde people who need to simply die off and disappear in the name of progress. That being the case, people here should do less griping about the Irish and start learning from them.

Orwell/Blair just wanted to fight in a war, any war. He was too young to fight in WWI, and as a policeman in Burma was surrounded by older men who looked down on him for his lack of military experience. We can imagine how that irritated him. It was probably one of the reasons he quit the job.
