If Black Lives Matter really wanted to save the lives of young blacks, a constructive thing it could do is call for free swimming lessons. Way too many black youths drown each year.

But that doesn’t involve hating white people, so nobody is interested in that.

  1. Wow, you must have read my mind. My wife just asked if we went to public pools in my US hometown, and I said we did right up to the point where large groups of urban yewts started showing up and doing little swimming but lots of harassing.

  2. Free grade-school math and writing lessons or coaching would help, too.

  7. Unless they can coach better impulse control, such a plan may backfire. I foresee an increased incidence of white lifeguards and blacks struggling to breathe.

  8. Most Ys do. Many don’t want to go because – you guessed it, hair.
Also swimming involves disciplined coordinated movements and NOT panicking and remaining calm -impulse control.

the solution of course is to close all pools and gate off beaches and lakes because black bodies are drowning.

  9. Numbers and graphs here:

Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR)

    https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6319a2.htm

    QUOTE:

What is added by this report?

This is the first report to examine racial/ethnic disparities in fatal drowning rates by age and setting. Overall, American Indians/Alaska Natives were twice as likely, and blacks 1.4 times as likely, to drown as whites. The disparity increased when only drowning deaths in swimming pools were considered. Blacks aged 5–19 years were 5.5 times more likely to drown in a swimming pool than their white peers, and at ages 11–12 years, blacks drowned in swimming pools at 10 times the rate of whites.

What are the implications for public health practice?

Swimming skills can be life-saving. The disparity in self-reported swimming skills among black children and adults might help to explain the disparity in drowning rates and should be addressed through support of swimming lessons and other proven interventions.

  10. Princeton University — which is now in the process of erasing Woodrow Wilson from their history — used to have a graduation requirement of having to tread water for 30 minutes.

That handy life-skill was deemed to be unnecessary sometime in the ’80s, since it was ‘racist’… glub glub glub in the swamps of Jersey…

You’re right, of course, about blacks needing swimming (or at least drowning prevntion) lessons. I had a language student in Paris, France whose husband managed a swimming pool. He told the lifeguards to be especially attentive to blacks in the pool; too often they just quietly sank to the bottom.

I’m black. Not really, but my favourite foods are chicken and watermelon, and, like I have seen many blacks claim, I swear I sink. Which my teachers refused to believe.

Physically I seem similar to the skinnier black: high shoulder width to waist width ratio, though not a large chest or lung capacity. Lean muscle/very little body fat. In school we were put through a battery of physical tests and rated on various dimensions from 1 to 5. I got 5 on explosive power, but not so good on endurance. I also never got a bone fracture despite jumping off higher things, and being more of a daredevil than my peers who did, so perhaps dense bones.

Dense bones, long limbs, less lung capacity, little fat cover, maybe even different muscle type, all adds up to less buoyancy.

For me, at least, little buoyancy meant I hated swimming lessons, which are mandatory at school here. I dreaded swimming days.

On the the other hand, everyone has mandatory swimming lessons here, and we still have a problem with high drowning deaths of Maori and other Polynesians. And I don’t think they sink.

Perhaps surprisingly for island people, famous for their boats and navigation, swimming isn’t really a Polynesian thing. Islanders dive and swim under water, but not along the surface.

I remember one famous Maori rugby player being asked why Maori don’t swim, to which he replied, ‘Because there is no kaimoana on top of the water.’ ‘Kaimoana’ being the Maori for ‘seafood’, and Maori being fond of food, especially free food.

1.) Rodney King (who also had drugs in his system)

2.) Michael Moses Ward, a.k.a. Birdie Africa, survivor of the 1985 MOVE bombing in Philadelphia

@Steve, I think you’ve connected blacks propensity to drown to their higher proportion of muscle mass. That higher muscle mass is also the reason for the differences in the now-controversial eGFR calculations used in detecting kidney problems.

I think it’s going to be a long, hot summer in our Democrat-run black inner cities. All you see on TV (I happen to get Detroit channels) is grieving black families – and absolutely no mention that the killers are black scum, I can’t think of a better word.

I don’t know. Maybe if we had a different kind of media, one that reported facts. For every time there is a killing in a black neighborhood, show the last three convicted killers from that city. All black. Current media is just enabling ignorance and BLM takes full advantage.

The demolition men may be evil for enjoying demolishing the foundation of American Society, but the reason they have this job is because the foundation was poorly designed and hastily built. The only two questions before us are 1) should we go ahead and demo the foundation or just let it crumble on its own and 2) what’s the plan for the new foundation?

  40. It’s not usually Negroes who can’t swim at all who wind up drowning. It’s Negroes who are just acquainted enough with swimming to get themselves in serious trouble.

Every summer, here in Boston, one regularly sees reports of low income, i.e., non-White, kids, teenagers and young adults choosing to swim in situations that more experienced swimmers would probably avoid. A minimal ability to swim coupled with low intelligence, lack of impulse control, and a grandiose sense of self-confidence is a recipe for disaster.

Unfortunately, Steve’s proposed targets for swimming lessons are likely to drop out after learning the basics and not regularly perform the practice and other drudgery, which are needed to enhance and maintain basic skills. However, these same individuals are also likely to have an inflated sense of their swimming ability. This is very likely to get them in trouble when choosing swimming spots and showing off with friends.

Yesterday Oregon had 276 with the only non Portland cluster being in Utamilla county. Pretty good evidence that there is a ‘Floyd’ effect on covid cases.

Bend the Arc rises in solidarity with the powerful uprising all across this country demanding dignity for Black lives and justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, Sean Reed, James Scurlock, David McAtee, and the countless other Black lives taken at the hands of police officers and white supremacists.

Our Jewish community is committed to Black lives and Black liberation, including Black Jews. We call for our Jewish community, especially white Jews, to rise up for Black lives using all of our spiritual, political and intellectual resources.

    https://www.bendthearc.us/blacklivesmatter

We recognize that this work will take time, and recommend the following timeline: all Jewish organizations should make a commitment to fulfill at least 4 out of the 7 obligations within one year (by June 19, 2021) and to fulfill 7 out of the 7 obligations within 3 years (by June 19, 2023). The proposed obligations are as follows:

    1) Explicit endorsement that Black Lives Matter. Recognizing that Black Lives Matter is a statement that is inherently true and should be accepted without caveat or qualification.

    2) Establish racial justice and social equity as an explicit pillar of your organization. This should include but not be limited to: a) investment in education, spiritual nourishment, and community repair for the effects of racism within the Jewish community; b) investment in solidarity and support initiatives between JOC and non-Jewish POC communities; c) the creation of a fund to explicitly support anti-black racism initiatives and policy change in the communities you operate in; d) creation of an ongoing protocol for naming and addressing instances of racism when it happens and engaging in restorative justice.

    3) Commit to explicit intersectional anti-racist and inclusive hiring and compensation practices. This should include but not be limited to: a) 20% of all Board Seats be occupied by people of color of which a significant portion should be JOC; b) 20% of all employees be people of color; c) 20% of all senior leadership be people of color of which a significant portion should include JOC; d) a dedicated fund to hire an external POC-led recruiting firm to source employees and board positions; e) internal support structure to ensure retention, training, and support explicitly for employees of color; f) mandated quarterly in-person and/or digital unconscious bias and anti-black racism training for all employees to be led by Black, JOC or POC consultants or consulting organizations; g) periodic review of compensation levels for all staff across various dimensions of diversity; h) 30% of compensation for senior leadership be contractually tied to the achievement of anti-racist hiring, staffing, and compensation goals; i) a mechanism to track these metrics and publicly post the results for community accountability.

    4) Commit to anti-racist educational initiatives, curriculums, and frameworks. This should include but not be limited to: a) appreciation for the inherent multiracial identity of the Jewish community; b) inclusion of history of JOC communities around the world, and historical figures that identified as Black and Jewish; c) an anti-racist framework and lens for organizational decision making; d) public statement acknowledging the erasure of Jews of color and their traditions from textbooks, trainings, and Jewish education, and a commitment to actively and aggressively correct this erasure.

    5) Invest in JOC and POC leadership development. This should include but not be limited to: a) a commitment for Jewish institutional funding to allocate 20% of all granted dollars to JOC and POC led organizations & initiatives; b) develop a strategic initiative within the Jewish Federated system with JOC leadership to fund JOC led organizations, initiatives, and individuals; c) JOC and POC involvement in the design, implementation and review process of all initiatives that impact JOCs and POCs; d) JOC and POC involvement in all strategic decision making processes that impact the broader community; e) commitment to pay JOC and POC whenever they are asked for advice, consultation, or engagement with organizational initiatives; f) fully funded opportunities for JOC to engage with Jewish life at no cost, including Day School, Synagogue membership, fellowships, camps, conventions, and rabbinical schools.

    6) Create a robust list of racial justice, equity, and inclusion requirements that all grantees receiving Jewish institutional funding must adhere to. This should include but not be limited to: a) a commitment to replacing contracts with police departments with alternative structures of community safety that prioritize inclusive anti-racist security practices; b) mandated quarterly in-person and/or digital unconscious bias and anti-black racism training for all employees to be led by Black, JOC or POC consultants or consulting organizations; c) anti-racist and inclusive hiring and compensation practices; d) public metrics to track ongoing anti-racism work.

    7) Engage in the development of a fully funded initiative to assist in our communal accountability. This should include but not be limited to: a) at least a $1.5M annual operating budget guaranteed for at least 5 years; b) a leadership team composed of majority Black Jews and JOCs; c) a focus and investment in coalition building among JOC led organizations and ventures; d) active support of this initiative to empower it to consult, support, and provide metrics for accountability to Jewish funders and organizations as they implement the above obligations; e) the creation of said organization should be advised by a JOC led and majority JOC task force.

That’s certainly part of it. The other problem is acknowledging that blacks are more likely to drown to begin with. That, like murder rates, involves disparities that people don’t want to acknowledge.

Even the pre-existing conditions disparity (higher rates of heart disease, diabetes, etc.) is only acknowledged by claiming those are due to “systemic racism.”

So I guess we could say that blacks are less likely to swim because antebellum slavemasters wouldn’t let their slaves swim in the backyard pool with the lazy river and the water slide, because the slavemasters didn’t want their water polo games interrupted by black slaves teaching their children how to cannonball into the deep end with their water wings on. And they especially got annoyed when the slaves played that game where one slave child would shout “Shaka!” and the other would answer “Zulu!”

While swimming lessons could and would help, I think the more serious problem is simply that many of the pools aren’t actually locked off and inaccessible to the under-5s who are most vulnerable.

I’ve seen plenty of apartment complexes over the course of delivering packages from gigantic company X-which have obvious local racial majorities- and I’d casually guess the black majority complexes substantially more often than the others have community pools with a gate which was intentionally broken and that isn’t going to be fixed in the near future if ever. In aggregate, broken gates which can be opened or closed by little children could lead to a lot of death.

Beyoncé Visual Album ‘Black Is King’ Coming to Disney Plus

In a surprise, Disney Plus announced a new visual album from Beyoncé — “Black Is King,” inspired by “The Lion King” — is coming to the streaming service next month.

According to the companies, Beyoncé’s visual album reimagines lessons of “The Lion King” for “today’s young kings and queens in search of their own crowns.” The film was in production for one year with a cast and crew that represent “diversity and connectivity.”

“Black Is King” pays tribute to voyages of Black families throughout time. The visual album tells the story of a young king’s “transcendent journey through betrayal, love and self-identity.” His ancestors help guide him toward his destiny, and with his father’s teachings and guidance from his childhood love, he earns the virtues needed to reclaim his home and throne.

“These timeless lessons are revealed and reflected through Black voices of today, now sitting in their own power,” according to the announcement. “‘Black Is King’ is an affirmation of a grand purpose, with lush visuals that celebrate Black resilience and culture. The film highlights the beauty of tradition and Black excellence.”

Although I realize you all are making fun (gotta love those cannonballs, and “can openers” too), most of us here probably know the answer is part nurture (no lessons), but part nature too. Black guys have pretty low body fat and more muscle mass. I’m no bodybuilder, but I don’t have much body fat (no matter what the hell I eat too, hah). When the instructor, along with my parents, kept saying “just lay face up, breath in, you’ll float right along”, well I could see that was BS. My mouth barely stayed out of the water.

Everyone ought to learn how to swim – I’d feel nervous in any kind of boat, life jacket or not, otherwise. However, I think it’d be harder for the younger black guys than any women or white guys. You make a good point, Steve. I also don’t know why it’d be so insulting to bring up the lack of body fat – something to be proud of, I’d reckon – as an explanation of why they really need lessons.

The problem of blacks (for the other races) is not low IQ.
It’s that too many of them tend to be violent, aggressive, anti-social, too sexual, and criminal.
If they were dumb but harmless, like people with Down syndrome, they would be liked by most.
The main problem of blacks, particularly today, is that they don’t seem to even make an effort.
Police your own. Learn to swim. Learn a trade. Don’t loot, and criticize those who do.
Don’t think that “being black” is enough to be above criticism.

Sure blacks are negative but anybody who’s in shape is negative. Doesn’t make it any harder to swim. Growing up in littoral environments makes you much more drownproof because you’re less prone to aspirate water in a wipeout or whatever. You wind up with almost a reflex that stops it. That’s probably the underlying factor: not enough time at Grampa’s vulgarian McMansion in the disappearing dunes.

The genetic argument about the lower buoyancy of blacks seems to have some basis in observations about lean muscle mass, fast twitch, etc. But I think that would mainly apply to males.

Even younger black females tend to be much chubbier than the male boys, though like everyone else they get fatter as they age. Very skinny body types for women/young girls aren’t aesthetically favored in general in black communities.

Larger frames and mass and even rolls of fat are common with black females. I think skinny is associated with extreme poverty or heavy drug use. Or just cultural norms.

So black females ought to be nearly drown-proof. Of course there are many individual body types and you can drown by panicking even if you can float. Also, there is more genetic variation among Africans than any other racial group. Some tribes are generally fat while others are slender.

In the Gulf Coast area where I live the disparity between blacks and others in knowing how to swim has been acknowledged and some efforts made to specifically teach children in minority areas how to swim at public pools.

Of course, other factors: blacks don’t need to tan, so less incentive for them to get in the sun to swim. If your parents don’t swim or value that, the kids often won’t learn. There is no big money in competitive swimming/diving so there is no Big Money allure for young black males to spend time in the pool rather than at the basketball hoop or catching a football. No one one gets out of the hood for a nice scholarship or multi-million dollar signing bonus by swimming/diving. Like god awful rapping, black males in particular gravitate to perceived easy money via “talent” rather than scholarship.

Rage at loss of their looks as they age. Rage at men looking at them. Rage at men no longer looking at them.

Any time I’ve seen blm rallies and stuff its been almost 100% White women. The rage is not decreasing either, it is increasing.

He noticed a pattern where “inner city pools” or so-called “ghetto pools”would have inadequately trained staff and far too few lifeguards on duty directly contributing to drownings. Practices that would be unacceptable at his rec centre were routine in theses facilities that overwhelmingly served blacks. i.e. one poorly trained lifeguard on duty with far too many swimmers, or faulty equipment that hadn’t been inspected and maintained.

The Achilles’ heel was slavery. Treating humans, even humans of a race as devoid of civilizational accomplishments as black Africans, like livestock is wrong and puts the practitioners into a morally compromised situation. Even more disastrous, however, than what the early slavers did to blacks was what their practices did to whites, for they allowed blacks a foothold in the New World. Early Americans such as Franklin and Webster realized what a boon the discovery of America was for the white race, but by the time those visionaries had dreamed their dreams, it was too late, the tawny races already were here. The idea of an America, or at least a North America, as the more or less exclusive inheritance of white-Western man has been chipped away at ever since. Had blacks never come, had slavery never been established in areas that became the United States, then the racial drama would have been confined to a much milder American Indian-white. The United States, with its control over such a large swathe of temperate North America, would have become the leading Western nation, as it became even with the baggage of slavery and a large black population; but it would have done so with the idea of it being the exclusive inheritance of the white man. Instead, for a few decades of cheap labor, white America authored for itself the fate of living in a racially fissured society, a society that could hold together only as long as the whites remained united; one or two generations of disunity and the nation would become just another racially incoherent New World hodgepodge, a Brazil. That is what we have before us now. What the protestors and rioters demand, and what they are getting, is the end, not of America, but of White America. The promise of an America that conserves more than a veneer of European civilization, as in the mestizo and mulatto former Spanish colonies that speak Spanish but racially are highly distinct from the whites who introduced the language, is more or less disappearing in the most famous, advanced, and powerful of not only the New World nations but all Western nations–the United States of America.

    ————-

For almost 150 years the United States has been conducting an interesting experiment. The subjects of the experiment: black people and working-class whites.

The hypothesis to be tested: Can a people taken from the jungles of Africa and forced into slavery be fully integrated as citizens in a majority white population?

The whites were descendants of Europeans who had created a majestic civilization. The former slaves had been tribal peoples with no written language and virtually no intellectual achievements. Acting on a policy that was not fair to either group, the government released newly freed black people into a white society that saw them as inferiors. America has struggled with racial discord ever since.

Decade after decade the problems persisted but the experimenters never gave up. They insisted that if they could find the right formula the experiment would work, and concocted program after program to get the result they wanted. They created the Freedman’s Bureau, passed civil rights laws, tried to build the Great Society, declared War on Poverty, ordered race preferences, built housing projects, and tried midnight basketball.

Their new laws intruded into people’s lives in ways that would have been otherwise unthinkable. They called in National Guard troops to enforce school integration. They outlawed freedom of association. Over the protests of parents, they put white children on buses and sent them to black schools and vice versa. They tried with money, special programs, relaxed standards, and endless handwringing to close the “achievement gap.” To keep white backlash in check they began punishing public and even private statements on race. They hung up Orwellian public banners that commanded whites to “Celebrate Diversity!” and “Say No To Racism.” Nothing was off limits if it might salvage the experiment.

Some thought that what W.E.B. Du Bois called the Talented Tenth would lead the way for black people. A group of elite, educated blacks would knock down doors of opportunity and show the world what blacks were capable of. There is a Talented Tenth. They are the black Americans who have become entrepreneurs, lawyers, doctors and scientists. But ten percent is not enough. For the experiment to work, the ten percent has to be followed by a critical mass of people who can hold middle-class jobs and promote social stability. That is what is missing.

Through the years, too many black people continue to show an inability to function and prosper in a culture unsuited to them. Detroit is bankrupt, the south side of Chicago is a war zone, and majority-black cities all over America are beset by degeneracy and violence. And blacks never take responsibility for their failures. Instead, they lash out in anger and resentment.

Across the generations and across the country, as we have seen in Detroit, Watts, Newark, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, and now Ferguson, rioting and looting are just one racial incident away. The white elite would tell us that this doesn’t mean the experiment has failed. We just have to try harder. We need more money, more time, more understanding, more programs, more opportunities.

But nothing changes no matter how much money is spent, no matter how many laws are passed, no matter how many black geniuses are portrayed on TV, and no matter who is president. Some argue it’s a problem of “culture,” as if culture creates people’s behavior instead of the other way around. Others blame “white privilege.”

But since 1965, when the elites opened America’s doors to the Third World, immigrants from Asia and India–people who are not white, not rich, and not “connected”–have quietly succeeded. While the children of these people are winning spelling bees and getting top scores on the SAT, black “youths” are committing half the country’s violent crime–crime, which includes viciously punching random white people on the street for the thrill of it, that has nothing to do with poverty.

The experiment has failed. Not because of culture, or white privilege, or racism. The fundamental problem is that white people and black people are different. They differ intellectually and temperamentally. These differences result in permanent social incompatibility.

Our rulers don’t seem to understand just how tired their white subjects are with this experiment. They don’t understand that white people aren’t out to get black people; they are just exhausted with them. They are exhausted by the social pathologies, the violence, the endless complaints, the blind racial solidarity, the bottomless pit of grievances, the excuses, and the reflexive animosity.

The elites explain everything with “racism,” and refuse to believe that white frustration could soon reach the boiling point.

Here is one reason some black folks don’t swim:

Some African American women who don’t have natural or protective hairstyles like braids can find swimming onerous. Water can turn their professional perms into curly Afros. Restoration is not as simple as a wash and blow-dry.

Swim safety advocate Kyla Woods knows firsthand.

“It’s important to understand some of the very different barriers that black people face when it comes to swimming: lack of exposure, fear (mostly due to lack of exposure), lack of access, hair for black women certainly are what kept me from being interested in a long time,” Woods said.

I can vouch for the racist undertow at the Pool on Cape May. Our late ’75 boot class had several Afro-Americans (if I recall the nomenclature of that year), including a couple of athletic young men and one young lady who then would have been thought to be a little heavy, and she survived drownproofing and the two lads didn’t make it more than a few minutes before heading for the
    bottom.

That said, in respect to the Current Year, and ablaze with Woke energy from recent days in Durham, our Revolutionary Communist redoubt: my alma-ish mater boasts a current Olympic world record holder and multiple medal holder, Cullen Jones, so there are observably quite a few black folks who have mastered that skill, including, alas, the distraught gent in Recife who tried to kill himself by leaping off the quay and swimming into my screws as I came alongside, but I got shut down in sufficient time to not render him into chum, at the cost of a rather rougher than planned approach. The swimmer eluded numerous rescue attempts, including cops in skiffs, and after a Byronean effort, gave up and sank. That guy could swim.

My running mate from freshman year, from pre-high school graduation summer school, was a very smooth former small town high school QB and valedictorian, not quite good enough to walk on with Lou Holtz, but was operating socially on a very different plane than my Eagle Scout ass. It was a very educational time for me. There were indeed parties, some great, a few menacing. Many of the scenes which greeted one on one’s ambles seemed like downmarket Superfly outtakes if not Boschian tableaux. I’m certainly a friend of the 2A, but I really don’t enjoy being around excessively casual gun and knife play, so when the first pangs of young lust for a coed arrived I was all the more eager to run in a little calmer lane, and we drifted apart. Hope you made it to Meharry Med, HJ!

People endowed with a bit of common sense choose their leisure activities with an eye to what’s safe for them. And if you lack common sense, you’ll find a way to drown no matter how strong a swimmer you are. (You’ll take up surfing or whitewater kayaking or whatnot.)

In Deep Water: The recent struggles of collegiate swimming programs

These are not fruitless swim teams unable to recruit or unable to win in competition. This is not about lackluster school pride or failing team spirit. These are historically successful swimming and diving programs that have produced NCAA champions, All-American athletes, Olympic Trials qualifiers and Olympians.
These are teams that, in some cases, have flourished for almost 100 years. These are teams that have achieved winning records during regular season competition. And these are teams that have been cut.
Since 1993, over 35 college swimming programs, including those at the University of Maryland and the University of Washington, have found themselves on the chopping block, according to International Swimming Hall of Fame member Phil Whitten. Perhaps one of these programs would have one day produced the Michael Phelps or Ryan Lochte of the future.

It’s not a matter of how LONG you will float, Gordo, like a log that’s getting slowly waterlogged. A difference in buoyancy determines HOW MUCH of you, if any, will remain above water. Having neutral buoyancy means you will hang just below the surface, while having negative buoyancy (one’s mass being greater than the mass of water displaced by his body) means you will sink a ways.

How much a body with negative-buoyancy will sink depends on compressibility of the body. This is getting interesting.

It was the greatest mistake any American president ever made and completely avoidable. He was re-elected on a peace mandate. The results were a catastrophe for all concerned. Wilson was told by the British he would have no seat at the peace table unless he declared war. Why the USA, a nation in NORTH AMERICA, needed a seat at the peace table for a war in EUROPE escapes me. Such considerations never troubled Mexico. In any case post-war Europe would have needed trade and money from America regardless of its non-belligerency. But Wilson had a monster-sized ego and wanted to strut on the world stage. The result of his narcissism was Lenin, Stalin, Hitler and WW2. WW1, known as the great war until 1939, would have ended in a negotiated peace in 1917 but for this megalomaniac.
