From a Pioneer Works issue that tells you more than everything you could possibly want to know about the impact of Adderall on 21st Century writers:

Adderall House Style
How to know if a writer is on the stuff.
By Amber A’Lee Frost

… PARANOIA

“But what if he did, though?”

Paranoia is a common side effect of prolonged stimulant use, and when you’ve convinced yourself that someone is out to get you, it makes sense to find, expose and attack them. You rationalize your hostility as reciprocation, self-preservation, and self-defense. Paranoia also manifests in textual analysis.

Freud said there was little difference between the philosopher and the schizophrenic; both see a conspiracy in the text. A writer may convince themselves of these conspiracies by misinterpreting what they believe to be hidden evidence. On the page, this can manifest as outright accusations (these podcasts are all in cahoots to soft-launch fascism with Peter Thiel funding), or “deep reads” (Joker is a dangerous call to arms designed to activate mass shooter incels). Sometimes the conspiracies aren’t even malevolent; Business Insider published “43 Talor Swift songs, interpreted from a queer perspective,” trawling her lyrics for encrypted confessions of her lesbianism, indecipherable to all but her most insightful fans. Paranoia also tends to self-flatter.

Adderall inspires baseless suspicions and intensifies the desire to decode the uncoded; you can always find sinister signs and patterns if you’re looking hard enough.

“Ha-ha,” I say, while pondering whether to get that third cup of coffee.

  6. i had a rich kid from LA tell me (when he was 40, so not a kid anymore) that a prescribed Adderall dose is like 5% of what a modern meth dose is like. since he’s done them both. he would take 2 or 3 Adderall pills spread out over a day and could work with high intensity and focus for 16 hours, but then crash.

you don’t have to be on Adderall to get some of these effects though. just drink a few red bulls or the other energy drinks. which is what millions of blue collar workers as well as white collar office people are doing these days. it has somewhat replaced the effect of nicotine from cigarettes now that way less people smoke. another alternative is Zyn, which my brother is now addicted to.

people make fun of those old buzz cut, shirt and tie, stiff white guys from the 50s and 60s hammering away on the space program and aircraft and other engineering projects. well, they were jacked up on nicotine, caffeine, and sugar from smoking, drinking, and eating donuts all day. they cranked and cranked. that’s how we got to the moon and got lots of the civil engineering projects completed and military vehicle factory output levels that we had back then. taking away cigarettes and replacing it with mairjuana probably caused an actually measurable decline in productivity. getting rid of smoking is also, quite literally, one of the reasons people are so fat today. nicotine accelerates your metabolism, and you gain weight when you stop smoking. marijuana has the exact opposite effect.

cigarettes and coffee built America and kept it thin.

  11. As a physician and the apparent recent “outbreak” of attention deficit syndromes that is afflicting the US population, this topic is fascinating to me. One of the many resulting consequences of this “outbreak” is the lack of adequate supply for many of the available psychoactive stimulants including Adderall. For acute misuse and the resulting behavioral manifestations, one might observe a spectrum of agitation, paranoia, and/or confusion. Dilated pupils, perspiration, and elevated heart rate/blood pressure are associated physiological factors observed in examining acute misuse.

As for authors, many have struggled with addiction as a component of their lifestyle. However specifically for stimulants, I believe that Ayn Rand had challenges with amphetamine use.

In recent popular culture, one can turn to the legacy media and read about SBF and his prescription of choice, Adderall. His erratic behavior and lack of a normal 24 hour wake/sleep lifestyle can be best explained by his prescription usage.

    There’s two types of errors:

    1. False positive: Seeing patterns/conspiracies that aren’t there. I.e., the “paranoid schizophrenic.”

    2. False negative: Failing to see patterns (conspiracies) that are there.

Jews tend to be more of the paranoid schizoid Machiavellian types who, while constantly scheming against and backstabbing everybody else, wrongly assume that everybody else is also secretly scheming against them too. This is a manifestation of Jews being a low-trust alien caste of parasites who occasionally get shaken off (sometimes violently) by their hosts – but typically only after Jews have gone way too far for way too long.

White Christians, on the other hand, being naive and naturally high-trust, tend to fail to see real conspiracies against themselves. Furthermore, even when the conspiracy is pointed out, they’re quick to object that “you shouldn’t attribute to malice what could potentially be attributed to ignorance or stupidity.” That may be good advice when the suspect has Down’s syndrome but it’s bad advice when dealing with Jews.

It’s admittedly difficult to see how Jews are making the “mistake” of flooding white countries with blacks and Muslims while simultaneously forging an exclusivist ethnostate for themselves in the Middle East. It’s difficult to see how Jews would be making the “mistake” of turning whites into hated minorities in their own lands as if the Jews “don’t know” what happens to hated minorities. The Jews have no experience with being a hated minority? They don’t know what happens to them? Who knows *better* than the Jews what happens to hated minorities?

It’s difficult to see how Jews are making the “mistake” of using Western blood and treasure to wipe out their regional enemies in the Middle East, securing their path for more lebensraum conquests and ethnic cleansing of their neighbors, and simultaneously deporting the Muslims that they’ve “cleansed” to Europe and America, whom they insist must take them in or else they’re “racists.” They just “mistakenly” fail fail to see the hypocrisy? It’s difficult to see how “invade the world, invite the world” is just an “honest mistake” of the Jewish media monopolist opinion-makers and deep state war-planners.

Christians bend over backwards to see the best in other peoples even when all of the evidence shows those people to be narcissistic psychopaths. This Christian traits is exploited by cynical invasive outgroups like Jews. It may well prove to be their downfall. This trait, however, is not entirely constitutional to them. To a large extent it’s a consequence of Jewish media control and conditioning. Should Christians wake up to this Jewish control and conditioning as the Germans in the Weimar Republic did, and eject the Jewish parasites from their positions in media and government then they have a chance for saving themselves and their nations.

“Invade the world, invite the world”-ism is an entirely Jewish project of using America to annihilate their regional adversaries in the Middle East and then import millions of the now displaced Muslims into the West in order to balkanize it and make it easier for diaspora Jewish oligarchs to rule over – so as to ensure that the white Christian peoples never unite and rise up against Jewish tyranny again and perpetrate another “Hall-of-causts.” But weirdly, Sailer, whose primary role it is to run interference for Jewish supremacy – being a Jewish supremacist himself (midwit misdiagnoses of his being a “white supremacist” notwithstanding) whose position it is that Jews are a “high IQ” master race, doesn’t blame this policy on its actual perpetrators and pushers. Instead he blames it on whites, like the Boston Brahmin, even though there’s zero evidence for this position and they have nothing to gain from this counterproductive policy and everything to lose, whereas the Jews have everything to gain and nothing to lose – and have indeed gained much at white Christians expense and continue to do so.

Having looked up a picture of Amber A’Lee Frost. Well, she seems to advertise her BPD.

And per the typical clinical definition on Wikipedia.

Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined emotional abandonment.[35]
Unstable and chaotic interpersonal relationships, often characterized by a pattern of alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation, also known as ‘splitting’.
A markedly disturbed sense of identity and distorted self-image.[8]
Impulsive or reckless behaviors, including uncontrollable spending, unsafe sexual practices, substance use disorder, reckless driving, and binge eating.[36]
Recurrent suicidal ideation or behaviors involving self-harm.
    Rapidly shifting intense emotional dysregulation.
    Chronic feelings of emptiness.
Inappropriate, intense anger that can be difficult to control.
Transient, stress-related paranoid ideation or severe dissociative symptoms.

The big change since 2014 has been a massive burst of influence from Tumblr types and their ideology. And it is basically a kind of liberation movement for BPD attempting to justify their psychology and non-objective warped perspective on… everything. This has been mediated by social media and them being the powerusers and having their own rebouts like Tumblr has allowed them to socialise others to their perspectives. Maybe when she accuses others of paranoia and delusions she is projecting.

I recall an addiction-specialist shrink said that most of his patients who were trying to get off Adderall were creative types. Assuming that’s true, then I would expect the effect upon a writer whose niche requires creativity to be driving him into a more template-style, dampening his creativity. This seems right; help me doc, I need to get my creativity back. I think Adderall will get that procrastinated college term paper done by morning, but the writing style will be quite mechanical. The side-benefit will be that the dorm room has never been cleaner.

  27. @JohnnyWalker123

Well, I think this is a good place to address Jewish obsessions that contaminate this site (by the way, that part was funny, I remember laughing when I first saw it).

I write as a layman who knows something about history & contemporary society; also, a person who is neither anti-Semite nor philo-Semite & as someone who tries to be as objective as an individual can be, trying to be as impersonal as a pathologist writing about corpses. Not being a religionist in a classical sense, I don’t care about Jewish nor anti-Jewish myths.

For me, Jews are a historical ethnic cultural group centered about their unique religion which has survived secularization in the past 150-200 years as a separate entity & will remain a separate group in the foreseeable future. True, they now have their own nation-state after almost 2000 years, but the rest of them, living in Europe & Americas & the rest of Anglosphere will have retained their corpus separatum status. It is not good or bad, it just is.

Many people here are angered with their punching above the weight- especially in social, economic & political issues- but, I don’t care. I am certain that those who ascribe negative trends in the Western culture to their influence – moral relativism, white guilt, weakness in the face of demographic threat of colored races & alien religions, multiculturalism,…- are wrong, but this is not the point either. This was shown many times to be wrong, but anti-Jewish animus is so strong that no amount of rational arguments matters.

Jewish identitarians in the white world are afraid they will be swallowed by intermarriage & assimilation, but I think they are, statistically, wrong. This point of view, with different emotional emphasis, is similar to Einstein’s statement: Were it not for anti-Semitism, Jews would have dispersed like leaves in the wind.

I think that Einstein was wrong.

It is true that some ethnic Jews will lose their identity & their progeny will be assimilated; also, some “others” will be assimilated into Jewish group identity & as the net result, Jews outside of Israel, both religious, secular & atheist, will in a foreseeable future retain their collective individuality due to a combination of many elements.

Even when there is no anti-Judaism, Jews, as a group, will insist on their differentiation from others- in this case other whites, because with other races & civilizations the difference is natural.

And the question: who is a Jew? is not that difficult. A person who considers himself Jewish & whom others consider that to be, too (involving complex combination of quasi-race, religion, historical culture & primary ethnic loyalty). This will remain so everywhere throughout the world.

For me, this is a settled issue.

Real, pure methamphetamine is regarded by those to whom it is prescribed as very good medicine. So why bother with Adderall when you can get high-quality meth manufactured in state-of-the-art Mexican labs for cheaper delivered directly to your home sans prescription?

After all, Adderall is just dextroamphetamine IIRC. Basically second-rate stuff.

Seriously, though, it’s kind of sad that people think they have to get cranked up just to keep up. For a significant fraction of people who try it meth will consume them.

  33. Muggles says:

    Some truth to that.

Meth will do that too. Of course your teeth will turn black, fall out, skin gets bad, your former job disappears but the guys in the cell block seem more normal, the tattoos and such.

As a former heavy cigarette smoker, I can attest to the start-of-the-day coffee (bad stuff then) and at least two or three cigs. Would have killed me by now if I hadn’t stopped.

Of course Hitler & Co. nearly conquered Europe with the good crystal meth stuff. Works great until it doesn’t. Doesn’t improve judgment though. Frostbite is real, after all. Blitzkrieg required some chemical blitz to keep going for five days in a row.

One under-reported factoid about the Middle East conflict areas (Beirut, now Gaza, Iraq, Syria) is many affected inhabitants are either on cheap forms of meth (“fighters”) or tranqed out on cheap forms of Xanax or similar smooth-out-the-bumps meds.

High or low, it gets them through the day. Evidently nothing in the Quran about those so not much is said or done. Coffee also popular. Not sure about the Israelis.

Don’t know about the Russo-Uke conflict. I suspect that trench warfare isn’t done or survived being totally sober. Not an Eastern European cultural trait.

In the late 80s, 90s and perhaps into the 00s I recall cocaine being the “creative drug” of choice for writers and other proclaimed artists.

Film and video people, writers of various kinds, the NYC “hipster” elites all touted this.

While it seemed to have some stimulant effects, you also built up a tolerance and it was often more of a status symbol of having more money than brains or talent.

It could kill you and some began to mix it with meth as well. Bad for the heart.

Coke seems to have gone out of fashion though. Crack was a sign of ghetto trash. Always pretty expensive, the powered coke.

  36. The caution about paranoia isn’t wrong. But as someone who used to rely routinely on shall-we-say off-the-books stimulants, and is now prescribed both methylphenidate (Adderall) and Modafinil, I can report anecdotally that as long as one hasn’t indulged enough to be quite crawling around on the ceiling with Gregor Samsa, the stuff actually, simply, and really really really does make many people sharper at what they do. Without making claims for my fiction — quality judgments are for readers, not authors — I can at least say that when I compare passages within one of the novels I’ve published so far, many of the best were done while I was most highly medicated, legally or otherwise. They may go off on tangents and need more pruning on the next draft — when you compose prose by nose, it shows — but the ideas and wording are as good as any I can grind out in in twice the time if I have nothing on board.

Crack was a sign of ghetto trash. Always pretty expensive, the powered coke.

Crack came in because the feds cracked down on cocaine. Crack is concentrated cocaine. In the 1980s the feds cracked down on the cocaine pipeline through Miami. By the 1990s people who fiended for cocaine turned to crack, with deadly consequences. It wasn’t until the late 1990s and early 2000s that the cartels in Mexico were established enough to get cocaine back in the U.S. thanks to our porous border — and the result was that crack use diminished.

How do you make crack without cocaine?

Crack is just freebase cocaine. I think its name comes from the chemical process called “cracking,” although most people seem to think it derives from the noise it makes while being vaporized. Crack can be close to 100% pure cocaine, whereas the powder form, usually cocaine hydrochloride, is about 80% pure at most.

Is it that a small amount of cocaine goes a long way when you’re making it into crack?

Sort of. Crack is smoked rather than insufflated (snorted), so it hits the brain faster and harder, but wears off quickly. This is why it is so addictive.

For me, this is a settled issue.

Bardon, with all due respect you roll on for several paragraphs describing the general situation, then giving your “nothing to see here” opinion–with zero evidence–and then intoning from your pulpit that “the matter is settled”.

This paragraph is both denialist–anti-noticiing–denialist and pompous:

Many people here are angered with their punching above the weight- especially in social, economic & political issues- but, I don’t care. I am certain that those who ascribe negative trends in the Western culture to their influence – moral relativism, white guilt, weakness in the face of demographic threat of colored races & alien religions, multiculturalism,…- are wrong, but this is not the point either. This was shown many times to be wrong, but anti-Jewish animus is so strong that no amount of rational arguments matters.

The whole point is influential groups actually–wait for it–influence society and culture. Ones with outsized influence … more so. That is a “duh” level observation.

The cultural analyzer then seeks to pick that apart. What sort of influence did the various founding groups–Puritans, Quakers, Scots-Irish, Caviliers–have on America’s culture? The Irish? The Germans? the Blacks? This is all ho-hum?

We have some–IMHO wrong–commenters here who blame it all on the Puritan–to–Unitarian New England “idealist” troublemakers. Cue the recent Amherst thread. They were indeed a hugely influential group. One could plausibly argue we would not have had the Civil War without them. (Maybe yes, maybe no, but its not unreasonable.) But someone holding this view has to explain how America was highly functional back in its early years when they were extremely influential and still functional in 1960 when they still had significant influence … but has gone nuts in the last 60 years, when they completely lost their grip on elite institutions? Data.

Your theory is that despite Jews being extraordinary influential in the West’s leading power from the late 20th century–maybe 1/4 of the social science academics, 1/2 or more of the elite media, dominating the opinion pages and almost wholly controlling our popular media, Hollyweird–
… ahh, no biggie …. they did nothing interesting to move the culture? Nothing to inject their peculiar outgroup ideas and attitudes into the culture?

Their weird–minorities first!–ideology just happened to conquer America … and the broader Western world all on their own (during this time period the Jews rose to dominance in American culture and elite institutions). Coincidence!

Seriously we can argue all day about the complex interactions between
    — the nature–open, high-trust, neighborly–of Western man
    — the unique–weird–history of America
    — the powerful trends of modernity (e.g. industrialization, urbanization, the relative decline of heavy male physical labor, mass media, improve life expectancy, the Pill, female careerism, social media …)
    — capitalism, global business and finance
    — various ethnic and racial groups interests and ideologies
    — the interests of the super-state and state parties

But looking at Jewish influence in America and saying … “nothing to do with it”, isn’t just not noticing, it’s akin to gluing a paper bag over your head.

I wrote about these issues many times ago & it would be a waste of time to repeat it.
    I’ll just give links & a summary:

There is no causal connection between (negative) societal trends in Western societies & Jewish activism MacDonald wrote about. MacDonald was simply- wrong. In the US, as well as in other countries where Jewish presence is minimal, like Italy or Sweden, this is a natural devolution of these societies, with activist Jewish groups serving not as the cause, but not more than an annoying sign of the times. “Jews” did not create Hart-Cellar, the 60s counterculture nor minoritarianism; there is no Frankfurt school conspiracy; Weimar Germany was one of the pinnacles of human creativity; Jews were not “guilty” of Bolshevism nor of other misdeeds; they did not provoke WW1, WW2 nor other wars- even in the case of disastrous American interventionism, it is absurd to think that Rumsfeld and Cheney were puppets of some “Jews”.

Political Jews or Jewish activists did not cause:

Oh, I don’t know about that… I can’t say I blame you for feeling that way, because it often seems to look that way, but in service to actual knowing about reality, I’m not really sure you’re right.

Dunno about you, but I have actually spent most of my life around real “artists” and “writers” and they, or maybe we, don’t really think of it like this… in fact, we consider what you call “a lot of the people who fancy themselves as ‘creative’” to be sort of retards. In reality, it’s kind of a burden and a pain in the ass, not a privilege. You fail nineteen times for every one success, and brother, the failures hurt a lot more than the successes assuage. As Paul Foster said about Tom Paine, “you’re gonna have to fight for every inch of history you take up.” Trust me, I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t know somehow that I would die if I didn’t even try.

Those of us who are sincere are, trust me, not trying to make some sort of a prescription for society, that would be the fakers and the assholes. We’re just doing what we do because we need to do it, we’ll die if we don’t, hell I started doing it when I was five years old and I just knew, and we have a sneaking suspicion that other people will also die if we don’t do it, in fact I know that because I’ve been told so on many occasions. How many total strangers have ever come up to you on the street and kissed you and said, Thank you for that! I almost died, but then I saw what you did Sort of makes it worth the fuss.

Funny you say that about coffee being one of the direct or indirect causes of kidney stones, I used to be a heavy coffee drinker and got them twice as well as a cousin and my father. We all were heavy coffee drinkers, while the black tea drinkers in the family, never got them.

Any time I’ve asked a doctor what causes them, I always get the non-committal answer, “we don’t really know what causes kidney stones.”

Adderall is just dextroamphetamine IIRC. Basically second-rate stuff.

No opinion on the quality, except in theory you know what you’re getting with a prescription (that’s a bit iffy if it’s packaged in India, but I assume they’re not going to add a CNS depressant….).

The shortage prompted me to look it up, that problem is from the bloodyminded DEA, and the stuff itself is “mixed amphetamine salts.” The combination of four different salts per Wikipedia creates a mixture that’s 3:1 dextro- or “left” handed so you’re mostly right. But that doesn’t mean it’s “second-rate,” supposedly this has a different effect than a pure 50:50 racemic mixture, and what works for one person might not for another.

Methamphetamine, almost certainly racemic, is a different albeit closely related molecule. As a street drug, as @nebulafox notes “Just say no,” it is known to be ineptly cut with fentanyl or worse, as previously discussed on iSteve the standard practice of using a blender designed for liquids is stupid.

Even before we consider LD50 dosing, it’s a bad idea to add a CNS depressant, which work against the CNS stimulating effects of amphetamines. Or to use it to cut with other CNS depressants that hit different receptors. We also hear a new drug on the black market which isn’t countered by Narcan has joined the game.

The crucial mistake virtually all conspiracy- theories minded people make is that they try to pin-point a clearly defined group (mostly religious, ethnic, racial,..) as the source of major socio-cultural changes, and frequently it’s Jews (sometimes masons or something similar).

And this is a major misfire, because no such group exists. There is no causal connection between any ethnicity/race/… & great upheavals in the West (and in the US) in past 3-4 decades, especially re immigration debates, influx of culturally & racially foreign and inimical masses, disintegration of family & denigration of national loyalties etc. To think that a group (or groups), which is relatively easy to identify, can be the source of such monumental upheavals bespeaks of historical illiteracy.

There was no ethnic nor ideological group of people behind such shattering revolutions & world-view changes like transition from Roman republic to Imperial Rome, Protestant Reformation, Crusades, formation of national monarchies, Enlightenment, collapse of “divine rights” of kings, imperialist expansion of European powers, national awakening in the 19th C, WW1 and WW2,… Not Jews, not masons, not Illuminati, not Rosicrucians, not some occult brotherhood residing in the Himalayas.

Simply, Western civilization has come to a dead end -as it was the continuity of the 18th C Enlightenment- and we are witnessing the processes of further decay, encapsulated in famous hypothetical question ascribed to Lenin: ” Perhaps the forces which propel us to greatness are the same that will, transformed by mutations of History, eventually lead to our collapse ?”

A man who, despite his shortcomings & delusions about the role of technology, various national cultures and their dominant currents, understood this better than most was Oswald Spengler. The Western civilizational matrix is old and tired. And this is the root of the Western decline. That what plagues the West & the US the most (race replacement, PC “liberal” ideological muzzle, hedonist emptiness & biological collapse manifested in infertility, pathological altruism, lunatic ideological fashions like n-th wave of feminism, media aggression promoting “diversity” & homosexualism- as different from homosexuality, self-hatred of European & Western culture….)-this is as present, although a bit modified, in Italy, Spain, Denmark, Norway, France, Germany, Switzerland,.. as in the US. And in these countries Jewish presence in the media & the overall life is negligible or non-existent.

Although ruling elites differ in these countries, they are a mixture of hereditary aristocracy, established bourgeois families & plutocratic oligarchs. These groups have, historically, served their countries. Now, they are morally & culturally bankrupt and serve outmoded gods whose future is annihilation- similar situation that had befallen pompous & deluded aristocrats in the 18th-19th C or imperialist jingoists in the 20th.

The failure of nerves that comes with the exhausted & geriatric social-cultural matrix is to blame, not some group conspiracy.

But, the societal-cultural matrix is exhausted, not the people. Our flaw is linear extrapolation of current events which leads to paralyzing pessimist fatalism. We should know from history this is a fatal mistake. Just compare Europe in 1930 (cars, planes, fascism, communism, cubism, quantum mechanics, relativity, psychoanalysis, radio, tanks, films, ..) and during 1900 (technologically, scientifically, ideologically and artistically more or less the same as 1880).

So, we should not give up hope, and some of us who are obsessed with Jews, should give up this tired old chestnut. If all of US Jewish ethno-nationalists were booted to Israel, life would be somewhat easier for Euro-Americans in some respects, but not essentially different. Blacks would remain blacks, PC muzzle would remain PC muzzle, dopeheads would remain dopeheads, Pentagon would remain Pentagon, …

I understand “therapeutic doses” are supposed to be non-addictive. However, I’ve noticed there are occasional gaps between what pharmaceutical firms and the medical profession claim to be the case and the way things resolve in actuality.

Humans have a tendency to want more of a good thing as time wears on. Is Adderall the exception insofar as people can reliably stay on it for years whilst maintaining the exact same dosage they began with? Or is this true only in a pharmaceutical sense and not in a practical one?

Research demonstrates physiological changes related to continued stimulant usage in neurons and certain brain regions, suggesting a mechanism for tolerance development. One clinical study showed that 24.7% of patients developed tolerance to stimulants in the time of days to weeks; another showed 2.7% developed tolerance over 10 years. Long term follow-up studies demonstrate that medication response may lessen over longer durations of treatment in a high percentage of patients.
