From the New York Times:

St. Louis Man Charged With Making Bomb Threats Against Jewish Sites
By BENJAMIN WEISER MARCH 3, 2017

The federal authorities have charged a St. Louis man with making more than half a dozen bomb threats against Jewish community centers, schools and a Jewish history museum, an unsealed court document shows.

The man, Juan Thompson, made some of the threats in his own name and others in the name of a former girlfriend, apparently in an attempt to intimidate her, according to a federal complaint filed by the United States attorney’s office in Manhattan and unsealed on Friday.

In one threat, made on Feb. 1 against a Jewish school in Farmington Hills, Mich., the complaint said, Mr. Thompson claimed that he had placed two bombs in the school and was “eager for Jewish newton,” an apparent reference to the December 2012 school massacre in Newtown, Conn., in which a gunman killed 20 students and six school employees.

A news website, The Intercept, confirmed in a statement on Friday that Mr. Thompson worked for the publication for a little over a year, until he was fired in January 2016 after it was discovered that he had fabricated sources and quotes in his articles.

The arrest comes amid heightened tension involving more than 100 threats that have been made against Jewish groups in dozens of states since the beginning of the year, which has led to a broad federal investigation. The threats, combined with recent vandalism at Jewish cemeteries in some states, have prompted fears of an increase in anti-Semitism.

Mr. Thompson is not believed to be responsible for the majority of threats made against Jewish centers around the country, according to F.B.I. officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing. Investigators are still trying to identify the person responsible for those threats, who the F.B.I. officials say is using sophisticated technology to mask personal details, like identity and the origin of the internet-based calls.

Mr. Thompson, 31, made his threats “as part of a sustained campaign to harass and intimidate” the former girlfriend, and that harassment appeared to have begun shortly after their relationship ended last July, according to the complaint, which was signed by Christopher Mills, an F.B.I. special agent.

Mr. Thompson made at least eight threats against Jewish centers nationwide as part of his campaign, the complaint said, citing Jewish community centers and schools in Dallas, Farmington Hills, New York and San Diego. …

“Threats of violence targeting people and places based on religion or race — whatever the motivation — are unacceptable, un-American and criminal,” Mr. Bharara said in a statement. “We are committed to pursuing and prosecuting those who foment fear and hate through such criminal threats.”

Adam Goldman contributed reporting from Washington.

So the only thing discombobulating to a True Believer NYT Subscriber about this story is the photo of the boating black man.

Nothing to see here, move along folks.

Hilarious, yes, but as Steve has pointed out every so often, Wolfe’s novel looks more prescient with each passing year.

True story: At the college I attended back around 1990 blacks and Jews started a group together to "bridge their differences." It was called (don't laugh) a "Blues Group." Get it? Blacks + Jews = Blues.

That's not the best part, though. The best part is when they had their first meeting. About ten of them gathered into a conference room for an hour meeting. After about 35 minutes the door swung open and they stormed out yelling ethnic and racial slurs so nasty they would have embarrassed Archie Bunker.

Needless to say, the group never met again and total animosity remained on campus between these two groups. This was an eye-opener to me as to where the real ethnic tension was. And you definitely didn't read about it in places like Newsweek.

If I get the chance, maybe next time I'll tell the story about blacks and Ko-reans (SIC). Then there's the black/Italian tension in "Do The Right Thing." Anyone see a pattern here?

It's remarkable how often that happens. I think- and someone can correct me if I am mistaken- but there have been zero islamophobia motivated murders of Muslims by white nationalists since 9-11. There have been murders of Sikhs and hindus mistaken for Muslim by white nationalists (and crazy people). There have been racially motivated murders against middle eastern people by white nationalists (and some of those victims have been Muslim). There has been an anti-Islamic murder by a white nationalist towards an Arab (but the Arab was Christian and the perp didn't understand that). There have been reprisal attacks for 9-11 that killed people near mosques who weren't actually muslim...but somehow the MSM holy grail of white nationalist murder of a Muslim person motivated by islamophobia has never actually successfully happened.

  12. Can you imagine if a right-of-centre journalist did this deed? It would be top of the news. The BBC would lead with it. The Guardian would have 12 opinion articles in two days. Obama would break his silence and to drone a few cliches.

Incidentally, I may remember this incorrectly, but the original summary on the NYT front page was something like ‘he was only responsible for 8 threats’ which seemed an oddly generous use of the word ‘only’.

  22. More fake hate! Were the roles reversed the media would be full of thumb-sucking pieces about why this is happening. It’s not that difficult: when the highest prestige is associated with victimhood, people will seek to become “victims,” only without the unpleasant parts.

    https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2017/03/02/montreal-police-arrest-possible-suspect-after-bomb-threats-at-concordia-university.html

A man has been arraigned in connection with alleged bombing threats at Concordia University in Montreal.

Hisham Saadi, 47, is charged with mischief, uttering threats and inciting fear of a terrorist-related attack.

In a letter sent to several media outlets and consulted by The Canadian Press, a group threatened to detonate “small artisanal explosive devices” once a day until Friday in order to injure Muslim students.

The group, which described itself as a chapter of the Council of Conservative Citizens of Canada, or C4, complained about Muslim prayer services on campus and demanded the school stop “religious activities of all kinds.”

The SPLC has deleted that tweet we told you about earlier questioning if bomb-threat suspect Juan Thompson was anti-Semitic or not:

An earlier tweet (now deleted) about Juan Thompson mentioned his own alleged excuse for threatening JCCs.

    — SPLC (@splcenter) March 4, 2017

    The deleted tweet had argued:

Thompson’s motivation seems to have been to implicate a former girlfriend in the JCC threats, not necessarily anti-Semitism as such

And now they’ve decided this was anti-Semitic after all:

Regardless of motivation, the act of threatening Jewish institutions is anti-Semitic and instills terror.
