Say that the Kenosha News ran the following story and photo on p. 3 last Monday:
Jacob Blake, a 29-yearold unemployed security guard, was shot by Kenosha police on Sunday while, armed with a knife, he attempted to abduct three of his children from his ex-girlfriend, their mother who has legal custody. The police immediately rendered first aid, and Blake is in serious but stable condition at a local hospital.
How much would the national media care?
An anonymous iSteve commenter says:
A hypothetical “white Blake”–if he attracted any national attention at all–would be a poster boy for “toxic masculinity,” his aggressive behavior would be used as evidence of the dangers women face in American society. There would be calls for police and the courts to be more punitive (not less) with men like him, and they would be made by the very same Twitter feminists (Jill Filipovic, Jessica Valenti and their ilk) now crying crocodile tears over the actual “black Blake.”
A good working definition of intersectional feminism: “what we say only applies to white men.”
Part of what’s going on at present is that every time a white cop shoots a black man, the chances are high that the politicians are going to try to saddle the cop with a murder charge, so the police union lawyer tells the cops to:
“Shut up! Don’t try to explain any details of why you did this. We will tell the facts at the trial and win an acquittal. But don’t start talking to the press or it could backfire at the trial.”
So, the police departments go mum and the press goes wild spinning tales of Systemic Racism stalking black men.
You know, the more I think about Jacob Blake’s domestic dispute story, the more it sounds like something a white guy of similar social class might get himself into perhaps even more than a black guy. It involves a knife rather than a gun, and he presumably sees himself trying to be a good dad to his three kids in the backseat.
In fact, the more I think about the case, the more I can imagine what might have happened if I picture Blake as white.
A interesting question is whether this was a custody dispute over the three kids in the car. Were the three children of Blake’s in the backseat of his SUV his kids with the ex-girlfriend who called the cops on him?
Or were they a completely different set of three kids? George Crump, the New Johnny Cochran hired by Blake’s family, claimed Blake had six kids, but I have my doubts: six is a lot these days, and maybe Crump was just speculating that he had six children. Maybe Blake had come over with a new girlfriend or a sister to take his kids from his ex-girlfriend, either for good or for a Sunday outing.
So here’s my best guess: Blake and his ex-girlfriend, the mother of three of his children, broke up at some point. In May of this year, he shows up in middle of the night after she gets back from a party in Milwaukee, jealous, assaults her and takes her car keys without her permission. (But she’d often lend him the car, and he then returned her car to her sister the next day.) She got a warrant taken out against him for felony sexual assault, but nobody knew where he was living so they couldn’t serve it. (Here’s the felony warrant for the May domestic violence incident.)
Then he shows up again on Sunday. The Baby Mama calls the cops. The police presumably found out about the warrant before they even got there: they have computers and radios and stuff.
And arresting him for the outstanding felony warrant seems like a simple way to deal with this no doubt complicated domestic dispute involving Blake and two women who are fighting each other, plus a bunch of kids: OK, Mr. Blake, you are going to have to come with us downtown, where you can explain your side of your argument with your ex-girlfriend to the people there. But Blake isn’t in the mood to deal with old business, he’s mad at his girlfriend and now the cops are siding with her. It’s not fair! Of course, he’s not going to listen to the police: they are on her side!
So he’s going to go get his knife to show the cops he’s serious, and then he’s going to drive his kids to Chuck E. Cheese like he promised them.
Or perhaps something like that. At this point I’m speculating wildly, obviously.
But my point is that a few white guys get shot by police every year when they get out of control in arguments with their ex-es over their children and then won’t listen to police.
But nobody much cares when angry white men get shot.
