My mom was visiting a couple of days ago and turned on her local news which is a Columbia SC station. There was a story about the black man who murdered the six white people in Rock Hill. There was no mention of the murderer’s race or the fact that all the people he killed were white, just the fact that the slain doctor had formed a coalition with a black church in the area some time before he was killed.

Then they had this story. They made explicit the fact that it was a white man “assaulting” an innocent black kid. They interviewed the molester’s mom and she said it was a case of racism and encouraged people to come out and protest. She made no mention of the sexual assault or attempted child abduction and apparently the news didn’t see fit to investigate enough to find out about it.

Hoboy, I just knew there was more to this story as I glossed over it. Probably made out the punk to be a thief scoping out the neighborhood or something similar. They should have pressed charges against this sex assaulter rather than ask their neighbor to help them out. Walking off with a child is some serious stuff. No good deed goes unpunished. What a crock this is, a left wing lynch mob. Facts don’t matter anymore just the fairytale narrative.

So, the guy’s life is ruined because he was trying to defend his wife and his neighborhood from a lunatic.

Message: White people should never, ever interact with blacks for any reason.

And if you have to call the cops on a black person, be sure to make the situation sound as dire as possible. None of this, “yeah there’s this black dude acting weird and bothering folks, maybe send a squad car down here to check it out.” You should be screaming, “there’s this man out here who’s attacking women! He tried to attack my wife! Oh my God! Please send help! I think he might be high on PCP!”

I don’t suggest anyone bother reading this cursory, unhelpful article. Its contents can be reduced to two simple ‘truths’:

1) There is no discernible motive for this incident. No one knows anything about Adams’s connections to the doctor and his family.

2) Phillip Adams was by all accounts a lovely man who must have been driven to killing by Reasons, likely CTE.

On thing that I suppose is interesting is the tone that David Newton, the ESPN writer, takes in attributing the crime to Adams. Although there’s nothing technically wrong with Newton’s reporting, it’s easy to sense how hard he’s rowing upstream against the Narrative by revealing even the basic facts of the murder:

According to officer Kyle Merck’s recount [sic] of what happened from one of the victims, who was still alive and alert at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds, a “black male” emerged from the woods around the Marshall Road home wearing a black hoodie, camouflage pants and “opened fire.”

The victim, Robert Shook, one of two HVAC technicians working at the home, “then stated the suspect went into the house, then exited and went back through the woods the way he came.”

Note how Newton is so terrified of portraying a black man as a criminal that he removes his own authorial voice from the identification of the murderer via two levels of distancing. First he makes it clear he’s only quoting the police officer who made the latest statement at a press conference. And then Newton carefully places “black male” in quotation marks in order to attribute this radioactive phrase to the poor HVAC guy who managed to survive briefly after being gunned down. It’s much safer if this now-dead guy takes the blame for telling the truth/making a racist accusation.

I wasn’t going to comment on this, but I did see the video, and it did strike me that the young black guy looks like he was mentally ill and probably on medication too, judging by his flat affect.

The correct thing to do, if he was doing something wrong in the neighborhood, would have been to call the local cops and explain to them what the guy was doing wrong, or that he was behaving strangely, rather than to confront the guy in the manner shown in the video.

The cops could then decide whether the person had committed an offense or needed to be taken to a mental health evaluation Center. This latter is a formal power that the police have in most jurisdictions that individuals do not have.

As a person holding a responsible supervisory job such as a drill sergeant, you would imagine that he would know the right thing to do, but jobs like drill sergeant might possibly attract the kind of people who enjoy bullying younger men, don’t you think.

So was the enraged homeowner acting in a racist fashion? Probably so. However pushing somebody in this manner without causing grievous bodily harm is probably not a felony, and I don’t see why he should lose his job. Actually he was probably demonstrating the qualities that make him good in his job, but in an inappropriate context.

The correct thing to do, if he was doing something wrong in the neighborhood, would have been to call the local cops and explain to them what the guy was doing wrong, or that he was behaving strangely, rather than to confront the guy in the manner shown in the video.

What if the man had been repeatedly harassing the neighborhood and the police or courts weren’t acting to protect the residents? Hadn’t there been a number of reports filed against the man?

Was there ever any explanation for why the NYT Chronicle went away? I suspect the reason is something like what you described, but have not seen any real discussion.
