Gov. Cuomo’s ascent to TV stardom reminds me of how Rudy Giuliani became the putative GOP frontrunner for 2008 in the days after 9/11: not by doing anything useful, but by Giving Good Briefings on TV to scared New Yorkers.

iSteve commenter 415 Reasons notes:

If you ask The Science, you can see in this Nature paper a summary of the implied infection fatality rate of ~30 cities around the world where they have done seroprevalence studies. NYC had an Infection Fatality Rate about 120% the mean of these places and about 40% higher than the second worst. Figure 2B. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-020-2918-0_reference.pdf

Now I don’t know WHY their IFR for people <65 stood out as being uniquely bad, but it certainly could be because of Cuomo’s disastrous decision to send COVID patients back into nursing homes (since there are indeed many sickly people under 65 living in such long term care facilities).

You would think such a leader would not get the COVID lifetime achievement award. But clearly the most important point of COVID had not been around actually making the right decisions to enhance the overall well being of society it has been about being in control and saying what sounds good to the ruling elite.

Trump actually improved on his 2016 popular vote count by — at this writing — roughly 7 million. This was after he failed to respond to COVID, botched the economy, emboldened our enemies, embraced white supremacy.

we are not one country at all anymore, but two sharing the same borders. one is future versus past. Meaning that yesterday, this was a nation where white people were the majority, and tomorrow it will be one where they are not.

The fear and resentment that inspires in many white people cannot be overstated. So a moral reckoning is required here. It is time more white Americans finally recognize that white supremacy is not something you compromise with or rationalize. It must be a deal breaker, always.

That’s “who we are as a people.” Let us stop kidding ourselves about that.

And start figuring out how to become something worthy

It ends up on a school reading list, thousands of kids are made to read it, its sales soar and, hey presto, a literary giant is born with all the approved political views.

So, are they going to mention why he had to send the national guard to New Rochelle, not that they were sent in time. New Rochelle was primary the nucleus for the outbreak in the US. Even the first case in Ohio was traced to somebody who had visited New Rochelle as was the infamous AIPAC exposure event linked to a ‘delegation’ from New Rochelle.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/10/new-york-gov-cuomo-to-deploy-national-guard-to-new-rochelle-establishes-containment-center-to-stem-coronavirus.html

Indeed, New Yorkers were confused by the nature of the outbreak in NYC, why was it appearing in certain neighbourhoods long distances from each other like Far Rockaway…

Veteran iSteve readers can guess why.

It’s actually a pretty important part of the scope, speed and scale of the outbreak in NYC and thus for the US and the world. Hint, you won’t read the most important reason why New Rochelle was a nucleus for the outbreak or why the national guard had to be sent in via the MSM. But in the Forward…

And today he proudly carries on that tradition by giving press conferences outside such landmarks like a landscape and garden center to frighten Americans into believing Trump only lost due to massive voter fraud and ballot harvesting at $20,000 a day…at least when he is not untucking his shirt for a woman on secret cameras.

But, to be fair, I do appreciate his crusade against yogurt that was claimed to be non-fat.

  17. Anonymous[504] • Disclaimer says:

I might have missed the day A. Cuomo gave a reassuring, statesmanlike speech about anything at all, let alone viruses and ventilators. He and Sidney Powell could have an annoying cable news show together. When “Politically Incorrect” debuted in the 90s they had Bill Maher and Arianna Huffington to fill those already campy stock klatsch-combat roles. The mid-century Capra-corn mimickry of Inspiring Politician and Tough Prosecutor was creaky by the time Obama and Kamala were flogging it. Now we have a borderline retard pretender to the throne who couldn’t even master the crude, outdated tropes.

  18. @JohnnyWalker123

Daddy Mario used to tell a sob story about how despite his “top grades” over 50 law firms rejected him. Of course, those “top grades” were at St John’s Law School, Queens, not Harvard; he also was probably as big a jerk then as he was later as a politician, so there’s that as well.

Eventually he was hired by a Brooklyn firm that handled, among others, Daddy Trump. He and Don are rather similar, ethnics from Queens who were never really accepted by the Elites because of their vulgarity. Trump was always a Democrat, likely voted for Mario three times, and only seems like a “fascist” because of how crazy the shitlibs have gotten. That’s why rich WASP Jeb! tried to make Trump’s “New York values” an issue at the debates, only to generate laughs.

So yeah, “a nice SWPL type from Manhattan” wouldn’t want to hang out with the Cuomos (remember how Chris attacked that guy in the Hamptons who mocked his phony quarantine routine?), but maybe for many of the same reasons he wouldn’t like to hang out with that vulgar Trump.

Hong Kong to tighten Covid-19 measures as travel bubble with Singapore hangs in the balance

    https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/hong-kong-sees-new-wave-of-coronavirus-cases-more-students-asked-to-stay-home

    This is interesting.

Hong Kong and Singapore have arranged a mutual, unrestricted travel arrangement (which requires Covid testing) to help restart their economies. The excerpt below, from the a local newspaper article, seems to indicate that numerate and pragmatic technocrats are at work.

HONG KONG – Hong Kong may be in the grip of a fourth Covid-19 wave with a spike in infections, but the travel bubble with Singapore – which is scheduled to be launched on Sunday (Nov 22) – remains intact.

The Straits Times understands that the first few flights under the arrangement between Hong Kong and Singapore, announced in mid-October, are expected to proceed as planned for now.

Under the deal, the travel bubble will be suspended for two weeks if the seven-day moving average of the daily number of unlinked local Covid-19 cases is more than five for either Singapore or Hong Kong.

The latest moving average for the territory is 2.14 based on a method used by both Hong Kong and Singapore with data from the Centre for Health Protection, sources told ST. The number of new infections on Saturday will be crucial in determining if the threshold is breached.

Hong Kong added 26 confirmed cases as of Friday, of which 21 were local and the rest imported. This brings the tally of total cases in the territory to 5,517 and 108 deaths.

The Hong Kong Tourism Commission, in a response to ST, said that the travel bubble can be adjusted any time by either increasing or reducing designated flights, or suspending them altogether.

If the threshold of five is breached, the travel bubble “will be suspended in two days’ time (including the day on which the figure was announced) for two weeks”.

Still the most important man in American public life of the last 25 years (his immediate predecessor for that title would have to be the Senatorial duumvirate of Richard Lugar and Sam Nunn, who fixated as only two boring old white men could on the boring old issue of securing Russia’s boring old nuclear stockpiles until such time as that country came out of its boring old post-Glasnost drunken stupor).

Rudy, on the other hand, after helping put the final nail in the coffin of organized crime, pretty much singlehandedly revived the dream of urban living in America, inspiring a bunch of copycat downtown renewal projects all over the country (new ballparks, waterfronts, hipster lofts, etc.). Yeah, the prospects of it taking in marginal sh!tholes like Baltimore was slim to none, but NYC’s shining example of crushing crime and restoring civilized norms of behavior even among people whose base instincts are otherwise toward living and treating each other like rats made us hope it could be possible everywhere.

You can clearly see it at NPR, where a typical segment is a Jewish NPR newscaster interviewing a Jewish “authority” about some book, play, art, or action by some Jewsh person. Both the newscaster and authority will lavsh excessive praise on their subject.

And that is why a certain very clever group of people buy and own most USA newspapers, TV and movie studios, publishing houses and art studios.

Why does some disgusting, untalated NY modern artist suddenly become the THE GREATEST NEW ARTIST EVER? Why was Sigmund Freud the greatest psychologist, Albert Einstein the greatest scientist, Barbara Streisand the greatest Singer? Even the Holocaust is touted as the greatest evil event in all of the World and Universise, despite being a relative small genocide compared to Muslims, Gengas Khan, New World Indians, Holdomore, Chinese collectivism, etc.

Look, 20 million Russians died in WWII. If the USA is going to build a Giant Memorial-museum-theme park in our Nation’s capitol to whorship some terrible human disaster in WWII Europe that we had nothing to do with, then it should be the 20 million dead Russians or the 60 million total killed. Let them handle the situation, rather than immerse himself in an environment that really is not his business.

“and the other who was a convicted pedophile”

Horrifically disgusting, but his past is irrelevant to the situation at hand.

“and blows the bicep off another Antifa slug who is about to crack his skull open with a skateboard.

Actually, the skateboarder got hit in the chest. It was the guy with the gun that had received the gruesome arm injury.

“It’s not armchair warrioring, asshole. It’s reality.”

Reality that Socksie wishes he was the one getting all the publicity. You and he still can be labeled a hero. I mean, haven’t the Orcs crashed through the shire gates?

I didn’t watch your video yet, but from your “no tolerance for intolerance” remark, I’m guessing the Governor has watched too much of The Office and is channeling Michael Scott now:

Those numbers don’t work. If New York is at 120, number 2 is at 85 5/7, and ~28 cities are below that, the average can’t be 100. However, I do agree with the point you make at the end.

    Emmys are awards for acting

Well, they’re for working in television. You can win them for writing, directing, and myriad other categories. Also, the Emmy that Cuomo is receiving is from a splinter group, and not the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which gives out the Emmys that one normally thinks of.

A private sector sector guy (taxpayer) receives a one-time check (rebate) of $1,000. Big woop.

A public worker (taxconsumer) gets the same amount (more tax leeching).

But the real windfall are the tetra-$$ intended to be shoveled into PERS.

The goal is to keep the $10,000+ per month retirement checks clearing.

.. for the 480 or so months that that same government worker, and many thousands like him, are expected to live after they’ve “retired” (i.e. from receiving $12K+ per month checks).

Didn’t this fool light the fuse to the corona bomb by sending the sick geriatrics to the nursing homes?

Cuomo along with Wilhelm/”De Blasio” was INSTRUCTED to maximize the early impact of COVID to ensure the Operation Covid gained enough public traction during its critical early phase.

In return, Cuomo was promised continued support by the shadowy forces that spent years preparing and launching this large psy-ops.

As is common for a deal of this magnitude, the arrangement would have been negotiated and guaranteed through respected go-betweens (Nancy Pelosi?), and further secured through blackmail MAD as Mr. Unz has surmised.

Cuomo’s actions re COVID were neither incompetent nor negligent. He executed his orders competently, carefully and to completion.

Obama got the Nobel prize for his appeasing talk in Egypt and for not being Bush whose administration was universally hated in “old Europe” (Rumsfeld’s term). Bush’s USA was seen as a rogue bully state starting senseless wars, Bush’s rhetoric sounded positively medieval (“crusade” “who is not for us, is against us”).
Being black had nothing much to do with it. They would have given the prize to Al Gore , too, if he had been the one to win after Bush.

  77. @El Dato

“We don’t have a shovel big enough to dig out of [the deficit]. It’s the biggest number in history. We need help from Washington,” the governor said on Tuesday.

Andrew Cuomo has Obama’s habit of talking about problems he helped create as if someone else bears responsibility for them. A higher proportion of people are leaving New York than are leaving any other state in the country, many of them the highly taxed wealthy, so there goes his tax base. On top of the De Blasio seems intent on destroying the economy of NYC.

From the end of last year:

NEW YORK CITY – People are fleeing New York much faster than any other state in the nation, figures released Monday by the U.S. Census Bureau show. More than 76,000 people packed up and shipped out of New York during 2019, heading to states such as Florida, Georgia and Texas — which were among the fastest-growing areas.

It’s only gotten worse in 2020.

In 2014, Cuomo said Conservative Republicans have no place in New York with their right-wing views because “that’s not what New Yorkers are.”

Maybe there were more of them than he realized?

Showbiz-wise, Cuomo has a way to go to catch up with Obama, who has two Grammys, an Emmy, and an Academy Award.

2006: Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album for abridged audiobook version of Dreams from My Father
2008: Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album abridged audiobook version of The Audacity of Hope
2008: His concession speech after the New Hampshire primary was set to music by independent artists as the music video “Yes We Can”, which received a Daytime Emmy Award.
2020: Best Documentary Feature Academy Award for “American Factory,” made by the Obamas’ production company

A generation of black comics gained prominence from their appearances on Russell Simmons’s Def Comedy Jam, the wildly popular HBO comedy series that ran for five seasons between 1992 and 1997. Martin Lawrence, Dave Chappelle, Monique, D.L. Hughley, and Tracy Morgan were just a few of the many comedians who performed on the show and went on to change the face of American comedy forever.

Twenty-five years later, Netflix is delivering a star-studded celebration of the iconic series with Def Comedy Jam 25. Taped at the Beverly Hilton, the new standup special features performances from Lawrence, Chappelle, Epps, Hughley, and Morgan. Along for the ride are Bill Bellamy, Cedric the Entertainer, Mike Epps, Adele Givens, Tiffany Haddish, Steve Harvey, Kid Capri, Craig Robinson, JB Smoove, Joe Torry, Sheryl Underwood, and Katt Williams.

“Cops are gone and not coming back.”

    No, they are still everywhere.

“The vast majority of black people HATE Whites with a passion and want to violently kill us for every disappointment or lack of success they’ve ever had.”

You are projecting your own insecurities here.

“None of that matters because your skin color is your uniform.”

Actually, it’s religion that is one’s skin suit.

“The only question every White person must ask themselves is, will I suffer…”

The only thing you are suffering from is delusion. Again, it things are so bad now, why aren’t you doing something to stop it?

It was an effective use of panic porn. Most people (in NYC, where I live) are so ill-informed about the true nature of the WuFlu coronavirus due to the propaganda spewed by King Cuomovirus, that they have been intimidated into a compliance forfeiting their liberty.

Yet, the result is to destroy the local economy. Tourist visits (50 million per year) are not returning in the foreseeable future. Broadway theatre and concert halls will not be returning anytime soon. The restaurant and service employment that flow from those enterprises will not return. A half million residents have departed. Office workers will be telecommuting–meaning more workers will depart. Small business can’t even be said to be on life support. Tax revenues have dropped like a rock.

The “city that never sleeps” now closes at 10 PM. What’s the point of living in or visiting NYC when the attractions are closed…

    From
Cuomo: ‘Extreme conservatives … have no place in the state of New York’ By Casey Seiler, senior news editor [CAPITOL CONFIDENTIAL, January 2014]

In conversation with Susan Arbetter on “The Capitol Pressroom” Friday morning, Cuomo said:

[…]Their problem is not me and the Democrats; their problem is themselves. Who are they? Are they these extreme conservatives who are right-to-life, pro-assault-weapon, anti-gay? Is that who they are? Because if that’s who they are and they’re the extreme conservatives, they have no place in the state of New York, because that’s not who New Yorkers are.[…]
